I was in town for business with a few coworkers and after our meeting we were taken on a little tour. It so happened that on this tour we were taken to Soho's for lunch. I liked the feel of the restaurant - it was a nice location, being surrounded with the farmers market. And I thought the food was great! I had the grilled eggplant sandwich - and was surprised to see how enormous it was! The staff was nice, the food was not over priced, and everything tasted great. I'm a little sad that there are not more places like this in the Detroit area.

I have eaten here several times and each time have thoroughly enjoyed the food. The servers are attentive without being either snooty or cloying. The menu is creative and varied. Decor is very hip. Sometimes it can get a bit noisy due to the open space and hard surfaces, but it's still one of my favorites for taking out-of-town guests!

I've lived here in Charleston for a few years and have eaten at Soho's mostly for lunch. My lunch experiences have always been decent enough for a return visit, but I was never overly impressed with Sohos. I had dinner there last night and I think my opinion of Sohos has definitely changed with that experience. While, I still hold steadfast that it is more properly categorized as "Italian inspired" as opposed to true Italian, I will certainly be making more dinner trips here. I had the lasagna (a safe choice, but solid by all accounts). My husband had the stuffed peppers (which is their reoccurring Thursday special, we were told). I tasted them and they were quite good. They were made with italian sausage, spinach and goat cheese. I think the flavors went together really well. Our dinner guest had the veal meatballs and had outstanding things to say about his dish as well. The service was also pretty good. Our entrees came out in an appropriate amount of time behind salads/ the appetizer. Overall the dishes had good flavor, sauces were good and nothing was too salty. I ordered the peach shortcake which was the dessert special that evening. It was HUGE!! My husband and I split it and could not come close to finishing it. It was just ok. I wish the peaches had been fresh instead of canned and the biscuit they used was a little hard. The saving grace of the dish was probably the peach ice cream from Ellen's (local ice cream shop). I think Sohos is a good place to take out of town guests for dinner. The menu had a lot of options and the prices are reasonable. You can have a good dinner in a casual, but still pretty nice atmosphere.

My husband and I were in town for a business trip and chose Soho's because it was so close to our hotel. It was really busy at lunch time so we sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly. I'm a vegetarian so I got the caprese panini which was AMAZING, especially considering the fact that it was only 6.95 and it was huge. My husband got the eggplant panini and liked it as well. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area!

Over 1 hour to be served our food, then it was cold. Poor service for the cost I would hate to go there when they are busy????

This was a happy accident! We were planning another rated Italian place but the front desk at our hotel recommended Soho.... and BOYOBOY are we glad we did. Some of the 'best evers' we have ever eaten. Lettuce wedge is pretty simple, but theirs was the best ever. And mussels? Yep, best ever. And then, oh my goodness.... their polenta with spinach and mascarpone........ I am going to dream about this for a long time. Might write to the editors at Bon Appetit for their recipe. And what a lovely atmosphere AND place.....the heart of the city market!!! LOVED IT!!! I rated it 3 $ signs, but we had a bottle of wine and aps.....

I came here the other night because the staff at the Fairfield Inn just down the street recommended it to me. I have to say, it was not a bad suggestion. Any place that has a bar that serves Hendrick's Gin is already a good choice in my book. The mushroom and caramelized onion pizza that I had was good. I personally feel that all pizza should have a slightly browned cheese top. This one, the cheese was all white, yes the crust was done correctly for a skinny little thin crust, but the cheese was not what it should have been. I am a big pizza fan, and I have had New York slices that were down better and faster than here. To be honest, it's the fact that I was able to have a Hendrick's and Tonic with Cucumber here that keeps the rating above a 2. The Cucumber is so much better than a lime with Hendricks.

I can think of many other places that I would rather go and enjoy a meal with family and friends. Nothing in particular ever sticks out in my mind about SoHos. Also, I find it to be quite loud. If a friend has their heart set on going there, I go. However, I never suggest it.

This used to be one of my favorites, but after my last visit I won't return. After waiting several minutes for a host to take our name, one finally arrived and shouted "You know there are other people ahead of you?" I said, "Yes." Then he said, "You want to put your name down?" I said, "Yes." He huffed. He took my name and then I thought better of it and told him to remove our name from the list. We ended up at a restaurant by the mall where the service was impeccable. I'll likely be back for a business lunch or Sunday brunch, but never again for dinner if I can help it.

Reading the other reviews about Soho's looking like a NY loft made me laugh because having never been to NYC I thought it was jsut a take on the owner's name - Chef (Bill) Sohovich - and the decor takes advantage of the building in which they're located. Anyway, the food is really good (Bianca pizza and carpaccio are delicious! - the lasagna was ok but my leftovers didn't keep the flavor which surprised me with this kind of dish) and it's a fun place to go with a small or large crowd. Service is always top notch and the wine selection is stellar.

Soho's is my Charleston fave for dinner. The service is top notch, the drinks are always spot-on mixed to perfection, and the food is an orgasmic experience for the taste buds. The atmosphere is classy with just the right amount of an urban NYC/Philly touch. My only complaint is this... For the price, I expect larger portions. Best dining experience in town, just don't park under the bridge, lest your date night ride becomes a pigeon dung covered chariot.

After eating too many meals at Tudor's Biscuit World, we had been looking for a restaurant in Charleston that didn't include the word "biscuit" in the title. Don't get me wrong -- I love biscuits, but every now and then I want to feel like I'm getting a great meal that *cross fingers* is good for me. Soho's is located in a restored freight train station along with several other shops. Inside, the look is sleek and streamlined, casual yet sophisticated. Their wine list was impressive -- we tried a Brunello -- and the service in general was great -- waiters are on top of it without hovering. We each ordered soup or salad as a first course, then ordered several dishes family style. If you go here you must order the minestrone soup! Some of the best I've ever had! A deep bowl of delicious broth, with homemade croutons with delicate, melting Parmesan cheese on top. We ordered several pastas, the gnocchi being our favorite. Not too heavy, in a light sauce. Overall, impressed with the food and the atmosphere. I'll be back, and based on the crowd when we were there mid-week, so will everyone else.

I came to Soho for dinner with a large-ish group this past weekend to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. The space is pretty neat, and I can say as someone who has lived in NY for over 5 years, that the decor is more than a half-assed attempt to look like a Soho loft. The ceilings are high, the walls are exposed brick, and there are beams running across the ceiling. The menu is Italian, and I was particularly impressed with the wine list, which was larger than the actual food menu. There were plenty of options for vegetarians and I ordered the cheese and roasted red pepper ravioli as an entree. My dish came swimming in a creamy roasted red pepper sauce, which was a bit of a surprise and I don't think the menu stated that it came in a cream sauce. That said, I'm not cream-averse, so I didn't have a major problem with it. It tasted good, but could have been hotter - I guess it was one of the first dishes finished from our table and probably sat in the kitchen for a bit. For the most part, my family members enjoyed their meals. My mom ordered the seafood ravioli, which on the menu said that came in a broth - but it arrived in a thin tomato sauce. I would just recommend to the restaurant that they make their menu a little more specific - how is the dish REALLY prepared? The cannoli dessert that my cousin and his wife ordered was not to their taste - they thought it was sour and actually sent it back. The waiter was very nice about this and took their dessert off the bill. Speaking of the wait staff, our waiter was quite professional and handled our table of ten well. This restaurant is definitely a nice change from the many chains in Charleston.

SoHo is a great Italian restaurant located in the heart of, surprise, Charleston, WV. It's located just of 77/64 in the Capitol Market, a great marketplace full of specialty food vendors and a farmers market in the summer. I ate here while visiting family in Charleston and I've gotta say, it was a huge relief to walk in here after seeing and eating in nothing but mediocre chains. The waitstaff was awesome. They were very friendly and helpful. The food was also phenomenal. The space is kind of small, but feels very open. They do a great job of making it feel like a place in SoHo (although I've never been to New York before, so what do I know). They start you off with a serving of bread, which is really good. I wish they would've given us some olive oil though in addition to the butter. For an appetizer, we ordered the bruschetta, which was great. It had shrimp, tomatoes, cheese, pesto, and peppers on it. It came fresh out of the oven, which made it taste even better. For my entree, I had the seafood ravioli (which is the Ravioli Con Pesce on the menu). It was stuffed with shrimp, scallops, and cheese and was in a crayfish-tomato broth. I loved it. The broth really added to the ravioli. There was one lone crayfish in the broth. For dessert, I had the cannoli. I also loved it. My mouth is actually watering while I write this because the cannoli was so good. Overall, if you're in Charleston, WV, take a break from the chains and make a trip to the Capitol Market and eat at SoHo.

One of my favorite places to eat in Charleston. The lasagna is excellent and massive. I mean really massive, I would recommend splitting it or plan on having your leftovers for lunch the next day. I like the location and if the weather is nice there is some minimal outdoor seating. Besides all the great food they have a great wine selection. Best of all they serve Dead Guy on tap!!!

  • Megan T.

Great for lunch, dinner and take out. My only wish is that they would allow you to bring your own bottle of wine and charge a corking fee. Though they have an extensive wine list, the California selection is somewhat limited. Great food, service, can get a bit noisy. Fun to sit outside in the evening!

Even though the restaurant was hardly full on a Saturday afternoon, it took quite some time for the wait staff to come take our order. The waiter was a little too informal and chatted us up about nonsense. The food came out way too quick, believe it or not. We chose a sit-down meal over fast food for a reason. The meatball sandwich hoagie was not toasted, nor was the bread for my salad. My steak salad was soaked with dressing, which should be served on the side so that you can add as much as you want. The wine was very expensive for the mediocre quality and we were never asked if we wanted another glass of wine or beer. I really hope Charleston has more to offer for Italian food than this. There was hardly anything truly Italian on the menu. Revamp the menu, revamp the waitstaff, revamp the decor, an then maybe I will go back...

I thought the atmosphere was pretty cool and my meal was really good, I had the seafood cannelloni with the seafood sauce that was recommended by the server. My friend had the roasted red pepper ravioli and while the actual raviolis were good but the sauce was actually bland. The bread was really good and the desserts were amazing. We had the cannoli and the gingerbread cake with pumpkin ice cream I think. The building itself was kind of industrial feeling and the wine selection looked pretty good. Service was great.

I had lunch at Soho's a few Sundays ago and was impressed. The restaurant gives you that New York feel in the middle of Charleston with its red brick walls and metallic finishings. On a Sunday the menu is mostly pizza and salads, I tried the chopped wedge, margherita pizza, and the shrimp pesto pizza. All were tasty. Our server was busy but still attentive and the overall experience was one of the best I had in Charleston. Soho's is part of the Capitol Market which is in itself a fine place to find organic goods and groceries.

people like to go to soho's for the crowd, not the food. my mother had what she describes as the most terrible dish she's ever had, and she sent it back. but they still charged her. i think it was clams in garlic sauce and noodles. most of the food tastes like it's been microwaved.

The special, scallops, shrimp and salmon under what seemed to be a butter, white wine cream and garlic sauce and creamy Parmesan rice. Very tasty. The salmon was cooked perfectly medium and juicy, and the medium sized scallops and shrimp were delicious too. I enjoyed the creamy rice more than I expected too. A wonderful plate of food and great service. My 7 year old just had the cheese pizza but it was quite tasty, and we still have a few pieces in the fridge. Lovely plate of breads too to whet your appetite with real butter. Since Chef Bill died I'm just glad his wife kept it going and we have a wonderful place like this to eat after a lovely May afternoon of flower and plant shopping. Memories of many great lunches and dinners here. I just wish they would bring back Jazz Nights.

The food is always very good, bordering on excellent. Sometimes I feel they are trying a bit too hard, loading things down with sauces and occasionally spoiling the presentation as a result. Being at the Capital Market, one would expect more farm-fresh type ingredients and simple gourmet dishes that let the ingredients speak for themselves without help from remoulades, coulis, and heavy tomato sauces. The atmosphere is extremely noisy when the place is crowded, which is just about every dinner service. The spring and summer are an excellent time to sit outside, which brings a quieter atmosphere but sometimes slower service. Despite all that, it's still one of my favorite places to eat.

I'm a regular at Soho's. Love the lasagna, the stuffed peppers, the pork chop... The sausage and peppers are outstanding and I love their soups. There's something for everyone there and the bar is the best. Joey is the best bar tender in the area!

Having just come from Charleston, SC perhaps my sights were set too high. However I could not have been less impressed with Soho. The food was, at very best, average (think Olive Garden). The service was, at best, rude and rushed. From the time we were seated to the time the check was thrust in my face was 30 minutes. My wife had the lasagna which consisted of store bought pasta and ground beef. There was absolutely no cheese in the dish save for the Parmesan on top. I had a very bland piece of Tilapia that was covered with a tasteless cream sauce of some sort. At no point during the meal were our water glasses refilled (we had wine as well) nor were we even asked if we wanted dessert. Lest you think we are harsh critics, we are not. I understand that everyone has an off night. But given the a la cart nature of the menu and the $70 bill for 2 people I was far less than impressed.

Good spot for lunch. I had the steak salad, with great flavors in the steak and amazing dressing. Fagioli soup to start. Good food, good service, definitely a return spot.

I ordered the pasta dish that was supposed to have a puttanesca sauce. It did not have anchovies, kalamata olives or capers. It was more of a chunky marinara with red pepper flakes. It was very good but not a puttanesca. When I pointed this out to the manager he started to argue with me that his chef was Italian and this was his puttanesca sauce. So, maybe every Italian I know and every recipe on Google and every Italian restaurant I have been to in the world is wrong and this guy is right. High end prices but not high end management or chef. I also had a caprese salad that had the right components, but was served at about 35 degrees. Coldest tomatoes I have ever had that weren't frozen. Good flavor but tomatoes taste so much better at room temp which is how it should have been served. So if you don't mind high prices and food that is not properly prepared, go there. It is way better than a chain restaurant, but not equal to its hype.

Decided to try Soho's this afternoon. I had a wonderful vegetarian lasagna. The zucchini, tomatoes and walnuts balanced each other well. My mother had the blackened salmon and shrimp. They were seasoned well and cooked perfectly. I only come into town a couple of times a year but I hope to eat here again in the future.

LOVED it! Located in the Capitol Market, SOHO is a "must" stop. Our waiter really looked after us well, pointing out the house specialities and suggesting an out of this world zinfandel without the out of this world price tag. We whetted our appetite with some artisan breads (the cranberry wholewheat one was amazing, but all were good), then on to the mains. I had the "Pork Porterhouse Steak" (pork chop) that was served with grilled risotto cakes and julienne squash and carrots topped with a Brandy creamed herb mushroom sauce. My dinner companion had the Five Spice Duck, which was a breast served with haricot verts, carrots and mashed potatoes topped with honey mustard sauce. We both raved about our own dishes while having meal envy of each other's. Pleasantly full (too full for dessert but not so gorged you feel ill), we ambled on our way determined to come back the next time we visit Charleston.

This place came at the recommendation of a colleague who is a local. He told me that the atmosphere was great, the food was even better and the service was top notch. Good news is that the hype was true ... at least for me. I debated between an appetizer of Escarole e Fagiole or Ministrone soup, but the server steered me toward his favorite of Ministrone. I'm glad I heeded his advice; it was delicious. So much flavor! For my entrée, I decided on the Pork Porterhouse Steak. My goodness that was terrific. I am not a huge fan of summer style squash, but let me tell you that this was seasoned perfectly and it was a beautiful compliment to the rest of this dish. To finish out the meal, I opted simply for a cup of coffee, but my co-worker got a piece of Tiramisu for dessert. I only had one bite, but it was delectable. Congratulations to the entire kitchen for a really wonderful experience. Joseph, our server, was perfectly attentive and did a great job of guiding us through a meal of difficult decisions (EVERYTHING looked so good). As for the atmosphere, I loved it. It was simple elegance ... perfect for a casual or dressy affair. I hope that the next time my travel plans have me in Charleston I can make time enough to return.

Very, very good Italian food. Probably the best you will find in charleston. I loved my shrimp and pesto pizza that was wood fired. My wife loved her gigantic portion of chicken parm and my mom needed a to go box for her artichoke salad. The waitress was flighty and in attentive and the tables could have been cleaner. The price is reasonable for the quality of food. Otherwise a 5 star place. I will go back!

The restaurant was crowded and it took over 45 minutes to get our food. We had a party of 9 and 4 of the meals were sent back because they were cold, and a fish dinner was still frozen. The waitress did the best she could under the circumstances and apologized more than once.. Mrs. Soho bawled her out in the middle of the restaurant and then asked if we would like to see the chef. We didn't. She was very RUDE and told us we were belligerent since we complained. She clearly is out of her element and should not be at the restaurant in any capacity. She needs to stay home. We used to frequent the place regularly, but will not go back.; Ironically, the credit card we signed, which included the tip, did not appear on the charge processed by the bank.. This is very odd and I will check it out with Mrs. Management

My husband and I were at SoHo 's several months ago and it still bothers me that we wasted our hard earned money on such a horrible experience. We could stand out in zero temp.,soaking wet with no coat and have a more pleasant experience! The food was bland, cold and nobody cared! The waiters and staff could care less! Maybe it was my husband was using a rolling walker a result of recent back surgery! Who knows what their problem was! Nevertheless this place left very bad taste in our mouths and they won't be bothered by us ever again! We have eaten and enjoyed Ourselves in many great upscale restaurants. If you go toSoho's let's hope the rude staff is having a better day, the food is great and you love the place. You. know the old saying, where there's life there's hope........

Tempted to only do one star. I ate at the bar on a Friday night for my birthday meal. A restaurant with these prices should be near-perfect, but it fell far short of that standard. The food This was the most disappointing. I had stuffed shrimp & raw oysters for an appetizer, with escarole, bean, & chicken soup, and wild mushroom polenta for the main course. Only the polenta was worth the price. The oysters were awful, which makes sense since it was June and they are out of season, but hey, if you put them on your menu and charge that much, they need to be good. The soup was totally fine, but, again, not worth the price. The atmosphere I love the look of the restaurant with its open kitchen and high ceilings. The atmosphere is probably what bumped it from one star to two. The layout lends itself to seeing and being seen, which I like. The service The bartender seemed to be in a bad mood. Again, if I'm going to go to a restaurant with drink prices as high as they were, I expect to have a bartender that seems happy to be there and friendly. The only time he perked up is when I talked about how I was going to go to one of the Capitol Street dive-ish bars later. At one point, he mentioned that much of his clientele are from out of town (refugees from the Marriott, I suppose), which might explain why he treated us like we would never be back again. Also (and this wasn't his fault, but was the fault of the manager), we had to wait about ten minutes to get our gift certificate validated. I really want this place to be great but I would have been disappointed had it been half the price.

My wife and I were visiting Charleston on our way to NC and stayed at the Marriott. We decided to walk over to the capital market, but were too late for the market and got caught in the rain so we went to Soho's for dinner. It was the perfect recuperation. We started off with some decent wine then split a caprese salad. She had the Cajun pasta. She said it was good but not great. I had the veal meatballs with orzo and a marinara sauce and it was delicious. I finished off with Dead Guy Ale, which they had on tap. The waiter was attentive and johnny on the spot the whole time. The atmosphere was laid back. Plenty of sunshine, comfortable seats, spacious, and not loud at all. It looked like they hide a nice wrap around bar too.

En route to Indianapolis on a psuedo-grown-up road trip with my beloved father and stepmother from DC to Indianapolis. We decided to take the scenic route through the Blue Ridge Mountains, etc, and ended up in Charleston. And sorry Charleston, we were quite nervous about dining options. My father declared in the car that he was hoping to have Italian food in Charleston. We cringed, fearing the worst with our snobby East coast heritage and love for Italian food. Upon our arrival at the hotel, we heard another couple asking about a nearby restaurant with the hotel staff, they said "Sohos" so we decided to Yelp it, noticing it was also quite close to our hotel. The space sounded cool (from reviews) and the location was easy to find. I checked out other Italian restaurants and was turned off by the hokeyness and limited menu. (I love old school style Italian, but, my tastes have evolved as I have grown older.) The space is great - a cool building that features a farmer's market. I think this super industrial city could really benefit from the use of spaces like this - it's super cool. Being quite a fan of industrial culture (well, good old industrial bands, I'm a rivethead!) I loved the space - without the name Soho or not it reminded me of any gentrified area - improving on warehouse spaces in a great way, NYC or not. (And I use gentrified lightly here, I don't approve of dislocating poor communities, but improving them, but it seems here there were no communities to move.) We saw the Wine Spectator awards and felt relief, being subscribers. We had a nice bottle at the bar and brought it to the table. Yes, the feeling is quite decorative, however they support local artists and allow for them to use the space to present their works. The bartender was friendly, a little distracted, but nice. Our waitress was nice too, our food came out in a timely manner and we closed the restaurant down. My father had spaghetti con vongole which came with clams in the shell (a nice amount), and I had one of my favorite dishes, spaghetti con gamberi which had nice large butterflied shrimp and a nice somewhat spicy sauce. I can't remember what my stepmother had. Oh, and we had appetizers. My stepmother had the house wedge that was hearty and fresh, and dad and I split caprese which had red ripe tomatoes. A lot of the veggies and such were fresh from the farmer's market which I really appreciated. Aside from the bartender tending to cater to his buddies (who were rather vulgar, but, it's a bar) and our waitress not pouring our wine, the food was surprisingly enjoyable and the atmosphere was cool (trip-hop jazz on the stereo!). Well done Charleston!

We ordered the pecan encrusted tilapia and margherita pizza. Our appetizer was the mini crab cakes. The crab cakes and sauce were quite good and appeared to have been made at the restaurant (though I might be wrong). The margherita pizza was a very tasty thin-crust one. The pecan tilapia was as good as I have eaten anywhere. It lacked flavor, which is typical of north-american cuisine, but a marmalade topping/sauce made up for it. I would order all of the food items again. It was a very good experience that included a great waitress and a constant flow of delicious bread and butter.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
