The menu prices are scary at first. Everything is pretty much $15-20 for what you think you could get elsewhere for $8-12. But then you find out it comes with soup AND Salad, and they give you fresh bread and some spreadable cheese for the bread or crackers AND then dessert. It is a solid place to go for food and a drink or two.

Terrific place to go for a family get-together. I highly recommend the Friday fish fry -- and don't miss the potato pancakes. Other good choices are ribs and the filet mignon -- make it your own by adding crumbled blue cheese and one of a variety of tasty sauces (burgundy brown sauce is my choice). I was also pleasantly surprised a few weeks ago when on a Saturday night, they were featuring mahi mahi. It was delicious. My wife and I usually go here a few times a month and have never been disappointed. If you are going on a Friday (especially during Lent), make sure you call ahead for a reservation or it may be 9pm before you can get a table. Those of us up here is 'sconi sure love our fish fry ; )

Went here for Easter dinner. It was excellent. They start you off with some Merkt's cheese and crackers. That's just to keep you busy until the food starts coming out. And the food was very good. Our table had a variety of foods and all were very tasty. Fish, steak, pork chops and turkey. I would recommend all of them. And the restaurant itself is very quaint. It's an old house that has some history. It used to be a beet farm and the farm hands would all eat in the home. The bar is what was probably originally the dining room and the main dining room was probably the original living room/parlor. There's a big room downstairs as well. Not quite as charming but probably had to be added as this place appears to be quite popular. All the furnishings are colonial and the waitresses even wear country style dresses with full aprons. Will definitely go back to this place.

Everyone raves about this place but I say it's just OK. The steaks are thin and blah. The fish fry just OK. The shrimp has been decent but overall I go because my friends love the ambiance and the bartender (Norm) and I love being with them.

My favorite place to eat! Always great food and great service.! We celebrate every birthday and anniversary here. We have steak and seafood, drinks, apps and dessert and it's never much more than $100. Comes with soup AND salad as well. We never leave hungry and are always happy and satisified.

Price has been raised to $28.95 for the 20oz bone-in cut prime rib but the full meal value still blows away what you can get in the city. And I don't mean Milwaukee... Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing and homemade chicken dumpling soup alone would cost you $7 to $8 because Rahm has to take his cut.

We went to colony house for the Friday night fish fry .The food was great but the service was terrible . We where seated in the back room And the waitress that waited on us was terrible . We ask for a second serving and she was not happy about it . The service was just terrible I will never have that waitress again . I wish I knew her name . Step back in time to old world Wisconsin for a fish fry done right!! Yum! Not the big flaky white cod you may be used to, but still pretty darn yummie. See what I did there, "pretty darn", I fit right in, haha! Good cole slaw, nice potato pancakes, great tartar and butter. Loved it, you should definitely go! Cute floor length dresses worn by the charming women waiting the tables. Service and ambiance both very sweet!

FRIED AGAIN This is an update for the amazing Colony House. If you haven't read my first review I will give you a taste. The fish fry here is delicious and one of the best in the area. There is a secret happy hour in the bar which is my favorite happy hour anywhere in the World. When I went to check in for dinner the owner recognized me. She asked if I had written a bad review. I told her no and that I actually wrote a 5 star review. In fact, the Colony House had posted my Yelp review on there Facebook page giving it high praise. The owner said, "Yeah but there was something you didn't like!" I said, "I made a few comments about the bartender not smiling!" She said, "That's it!" She then told me that Gary, the bartender took it to heart. So here comes my update and get ready to smile Gary. My comments about Gary must have sparked Gary to smile more. He was smiling for the full 90 minutes I was in the bar, during Happy Hour. I even made a comment to my wife about how happy Gary looked. Gary even smiled as he opened a bottle of tonic and it sprayed all over his blue shirt. I would have been upset but not Gary he just shook his head and smiled. I like the smiley Gary, even though he looked like he was sitting in a Splash Zone at Sea World. In my earlier review I made a comment that I had hoped that Gary and I would high five or do a chest bump. That did not happen but I feel like it might happen on my next visit. I'm holding on to that dream. I must tell you that Gary rocked the happy hour. He had 16 drink less customers staring at him. And he made everyone a drink quickly. I was blown away at how calmly he worked. He even knew what the regulars were drinking which sped up the process. That is the sign of a good bartender. So Gary most of this review is about you. I was so excited to see how happy you were. I like this Gary and so do the regulars. If he wasn't this good then these customers would not be coming back. Yes I am a fan! Thanks Gary. I love potato pancakes and the ones here have potential. The only problem is that they can be a little burned. Chris our waitress last night was the best. I asked her for non burned potato pancakes and she hooked us up with the best potato pancakes ever. I mean these things were magical. Thank you Chris you were amazing and I'm requesting you to be our waitress on our next visit. After checking in last night Susan H (fellow Yelper & fan of Colony House) asked if my potato pancakes were burned. She's experienced it too. I immediately sent her a reply telling her how magical they were. I wish I could give the Colony House 6 stars. This place is classic and I love everything about it. The owner is really sweet. She wanted to introduce me to Gary last night but I was afraid he might get mad at me. I wanted to keep Gary smiling and hopefully this review keeps Gary smiling until my next visit. The staff is really good too. Our waitresses are always fantastic. I really love the patrons. Last night we met some of the sweetest people ever. Andy (my new friend) even took me downstairs to show me his table in front of the fireplace. We even ran into some regulars who remembered us from our last visit here. It is such a sense of community here and I love it. There is nothing like this place anywhere. The closest thing I could think would be a Norman Rockwell painting of Americana. So thanks Colony House for another great fish fry. This place is one of my favorites and is a hidden gem in Wisconsin. Don't ever change!

This is my first review on Yelp, and my first visit to Colony House. I had heard good things about this place. My wife and I arrived here around 6:00 on a Thursday night. There was a good crowd (probably 80% full). The staff was very friendly. When we mentioned it was our first visit, they were wonderful about offering recommendations. We liked the basket of breadsticks and crackers which came with a cup of delicious cheese spread. We were pleasantly surprised when they also brought out freshly baked bread. Today, most restaurants offer you a choice of soup OR salad. The Colony House still offers you soup AND salad. I had a warm spinach salad. Where can you find warm spinach salad anymore? I had the special, which was possibly the best pork shank I've ever had. It came with spaetzle, red cabbage, and homemade sauerkraut. All for only $16. How can you beat that price? My wife had dijon chicken. I didn't try it, but she said it was very good. Overall, I'd say this restaurant is a great little treasure. This place has old school charm; the likes of which you don't see too often. The service was warm and attentive, and the food was excellent. This was our first visit to Colony House - but not our last.

I love this place. Pretty expensive but food is great. My steak always comes out a perfect medium super juicy. I always get a lobster tail too. So good! Chocolate martini is yummy.lots of seating. Don't need Reservation during the week. But would suggest it on the weekend

It's shit. This restaurant used to be a gem. Now they can't get your meal or your wine correct. Sorry to say I have seen this decent over 3 visits. It has been for sale for years but has never showed this decline. Too bad. I used to brag about this hidden gem

I have no idea how this place gets so many great reviews. Went with the GF last night. Happy hour drinks were awesomely priced, the atmosphere and service was good. The thing that matters most though is the food. I had the bone in ribeye, and Jenny had the filet with a shrimp scampi side. None of them were good. I wanted my steak med-rare, it came out well done. It also was not great quality beef. It was tough. I can say the same for Jenny's filet. The shrimp had to have been thawed and frozen again as it had that funky iodine soap flavor it gets when that happens. The dining room upstairs was super echoed out and noisy. It did not feel cozy or homely at all and you had to use an elevated tone to talk to others at the table.

Had a strip steak 13 jan. Was pretty good with a cup of cheddar soup , crackers cheese dip etc. But the platter of French fries are obviously deep fried in the same oil that the FISH are , the waiter had the audacity to ask if I wanted a doggie bag for the fries. Totally clueless.

Love this place. Jenny our waitress was a delight. Spot on service. Two steaks three drinks soup salad and oysters and dessert for $105 doesn't get any better than this. Filet Oscar is awesome!! Carrot cake divine. We will be back!!!

Wow... Well I am super peeved that I have lived in this area for 8 years and never once stopped at this restaurant! Only a few miles over the border... Yelp never shows it in its search... Thanks Yelp... better fix that. The restaurant, ambiance is great, very cozy and with a lot of charm, great service, and wow the food! The Mahi Mahi special was amazing, the chili was great, even the desserts were just amazing! I will be eating salads for a month from all the food! But wow sooo good! We will be back! Make reservations for regular hours, it was super crowded! Also what's with all the pics of the fish fry and cheese spread? This place has so much more to offer than that! Still the cheese spread was really good too :)

It seems that supper clubs never died here around the Cheddar curtain, and the Colony House is a best-in-class option. Tucked away in Trevor Wisconsin, just north of the Illinois border is a Nineteenth Century house in the middle of a sleepy town, reconverted almost 20 years ago into a restaurant. We arrived around 7:30PM on a Saturday and were shocked by how many people were there. We were told that there would be an hour wait, which under normal circumstances would make me look elsewhere. Since I drove 30 minutes to find this place and I was dubious about any other dinner places closer, we decided to wait. This leads to my first tip: Make a reservation! Since the upstairs bar was crowded and no seats were available, we made our way downstairs to the bar and second dining room. The entire place is decorated with a Early American motif with a working fireplace: tasteful, clean and warm. Our bartender Carrie downstairs was excellent. She made a perfect cocktail and charmed us with conversation and recommendations as we waited. Service was very professional: she was called only about 25 minutes later when our table was ready upstairs. Overall, service was a star here at the place with frequent visits from our server and table bus person. I was impressed. As for the food, in addition to steaks, prime rib, fish, poultry and chops, the menu features sections with proteins based on preparation-- Oscars, Marsalas, de Jonges, Piccatas and Parmigianas. I love this! I haven't seen this sort of a selection on a menu since the Seventies. We started with another old school favorite, Rumaki appetizer. Delicious! Based on Carrie's recommendation, I ordered the Fillet Oscar and my dining mate had the frog legs. Dinners start with crackers and spreadable sharp cheddar cheese. When we finished the cheese, more was offered. Soup and salad are also included, so we opted for a broccoli cheddar soup, which was thick and rich but not starchy. Salads were a delicious spinach salad with a warm, homemade bacon dressing and a caesar complete with anchovies. My partner said his salad was just OK, since the dressing was on the light side. As for the entrees, they were excellent. My fillet Oscar was a generous sized fillet, I estimate 10 ounces with fresh steamed asparagus and lump crab meat on top covered with a lemony bearnaise. The steak was cooked perfectly, but I would have appreciated a bit more char on my fillet. My dining mate commented that the sauteed frog legs were the best he's ever had. Sides were okay. The double baked potato was a bit starchy, but the wild rice medley was tasty. We shared a dessert of Key Lime Pie and found it to be very good as well. One other nit was that my charger plate was so old, it was chipped and did not fit with the overall quality of the place. I will definitely go back to this charming spot. I hear the Friday fish fries are great with a bargain all you can eat cod option for 10.95 after 6 PM. Because of the quality, service and classic menu, this place is great.

Just returned from our 1st visit to the Colony House in Trevor, WI. I must say, We go to different fish frys almost every Friday and this was one of our favorites, especially at a very reasonable $10.95 Very friendly, clean, well lit, big main dining room with high ceilings was kind of noisy, but not overwhelming. We made reservations and were seated immediately after arriving. We had water and menu's right away and the hostess took our order quickly and we received a basic cracker basket with some tasty soft cheese. We ordered Ice tea, extra lemon for me, and received exactly what we ordered. All glasses and tableware were perfectly clean and we were given real Royal Stoneware plates to use. We ordered both the baked cod served with drawn butter and fried cod with a tasty homemade tartar sauce. The pieces were large and nicely presented. Our baked was a bit overdone but flavorful. The fried was good, the breading was a bit heavier than I prefer, but it was tasty. They also brought us a small loaf of warm light rye bread, nice touch. The fish came with some very good cole slaw, very similar to KFC's, and applesauce which I believe came with my wifes potato pancakes, which she said were very good. The applesauce that I tasted was excellent...almost did not taste canned....hmmmmm My fries were the seasoned type and good. We were asked if we wanted more fish and it was brought out in just a few minutes. Too full to think of desert, and needing to get home to watch the Hawks playoff game we were done quickly but never felt rushed. All in all, very friendly and one of our favorite places we have been for fish fry. We will return. Dean

Best fish fry I've found in Wisconsin! I like to get there early to take advantage of the happy hour In the bar (4-5pm I believe). Plus if you get there early you don't have to fight for a parking spot! Don't think you are going to sit at the bar unless you are a regular. It's just an understood rule. the locals all have the same story about how cool the owners are. I have yet to meet them. The fish fry is all you can eat for $9.95 before 6 pm. This comes with home made Apple sauce, cole slaw and bread! So good! Service is always friendly and fast. Can't wait for my next Friday fish fry!!!

The Colony House has a great fish fry and we like the regular menu as well. They have a nice bar menu for lighter meals and appetizers. The atmosphere is genuine, a real "neighborhood" feel to it and we felt very welcomed there. We drove 20 miles from home to go to this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Great meal, courteous service, an all around good time. We had a drink in the bar before dinner and the bartenders there were Gary and Norm, they were both a lot of fun.

Went for dinner tonight. Everything was ok. Husband had the Prime. Very Good. I had the veal Marsala,also good. Side were very average. Soup to saltly,potato were lukewarm. Drinks were ok, but filled to the brim and spilled all over. Very loud party in the main room. We have always had a good meal here. Will give it another try. Not the best Anniversary Dinner ever:

Go here for homey steak and seafood delights near the border of Wisconsin and Illinois where locals and lake house owners meet for cocktails and dinner. For nearly 15years my husband and I have made this our kitchen away from home based on the quality of food, service and camaraderie. Colony House is best known for fish fry Fridays, steaks and seafood. What to order: In southern Wisconsin this is the best fish fry we've had and the best potato pancakes anywhere. Also recommend the fillet and prime rib-very generous cuts. If you're adventurous try the frog legs. Fish specials are always delightful. If you're watching your waistline ask for cream type sauces on the side. We also love the pork chops. Liver and onions is also tasty, but only available on a week day special. All dinners include a selection of soup AND salad. Soups are made in house. If you like anchovies ASK for them with your Caesar salad. What to drink? There is a full service bar with a lot of choices. You can order anything from a supper club brandy Alexander to a greygoose martini. And the cost is quite reasonable compared to Chicago restaurants. Reservations are advised for Friday and Saturday nights.

What an absolute travesty! This place is not only noisy, cluttered and outdated, but the food is so bad that everything we ate began torturing my and my husband's insides before we left the parking lot! He had burned chicken parmesan laying in a puddle of grease and I had orange roughy that tasted as if i were laying on the side of a pier in the hot sun for a few days before they cooked it. We were guests of a dear friend of ours so we waited until he left before we complained to the manager. The manager did not care one bit that we had a terrible dinner, he was as rude and obnoxious as was our waitress. This was the second and last time we will ever eat at this place as I'd rather eat road kill than eat here again.

Was really impressed with this place. Reminds me of Stage Stop in Wilmot, WI but honestly, much better. Nice dining room with a fireplace, tables not jammed up against each other so you have room, big menu with lots of steaks, seafood and chicken and a full bar. I had the big porterhouse and it was grilled perfectly and it made another full meal the next day being so large. I would recommend this place to anyone and would certainly go again.

This place is good. The prices are a little high, however they do provide patrons with a feast. They start with bread, soup AND salad, the main meal, and then dessert. I always get the Chicken Parmigiana. Very tasty and a healthy portion. On Saturday's from 3-4pm, if you eat at the bar your drinks are half off. They don't advertise this- it's kind of like an unspoken deal. Because people have found out about this, the bar can occasionally get crowded.

I am a local and have referred others to the CH for years. The parking lot is always full but after my experience there this past weekend I will be certain to take a pass for years to come. Our server could have smiled at least one time to make up for the lack of attention to our table. Or at the very least come up with an excuse as to reason our food was delayed for so long (we sat down just past 5pm on a Sun night with the place only 1/3 capacity and didn't get out of there till nearly 730pm) The creamy asparagus soup looked like the thickest creamy soup I have ever seen and my family didn't find it very tasty...i opted for the chick noodle and it was ok. The salads were lame. Cesar's were nothing special and my spinach salad was drown in enough bacon dressing to cover at least 3 salads! I literally had to push dressing off the salad so that I could enjoy the salad. Steaks on the table were good...but the server clearly hand'nt a clue about how the fish special was served. When it arrived it looked like a deep fried dinner you would get at Wendy's or Culvers. My serving of rice must have been from the kids menu it was so small....and the other sides like baked potatoe or the twice baked looked micro too. Our bus boy did a great job but this is just me trying to balance out this review. I don't go out to dinner for water refills. I was so dissapointed in the experience I checked with some other guests who were leaving when we did....and their experience was at least as poor as ours if not worse. Will spare the details out of respect for the fact I didn't witness what happened or how their food was preped. CH...take some tips from Twin Oaks and get it figured out soon!!! I will never be back. my wife took me here for my b-day!!!What a find!!The food was delicious..and plenty of it. We started with escargot. (prepared just the way we like it with alot of garlic sauce for dipping.Then we had soup and salad and I had the filet..cooked to perfection.I had the salmon and almost licked myplate...Service was great..our busser had our water filled ALL night...and his mom waited on us...she too was great!! Can't wait to go back to this quaint little restaurant...

I was just here with my wife and two others. The food is excellent and the service is alright. The only bad is that the place is loud for a family restaurant. Even when there was no loud music patrons seem to speak loud and I mean loud. Other than that I had the NY Strip and it was good. My wife and a friend had the Chicken Picatta and the other friend had the Prime Rib. Excellent food.

This small town restaurant deserves a "big town crowd", and they were very busy when we arrived. The home was well decorated for Christmas with a polite & friendly staff and the food was amazing. If this restaurant is out of the way, it is worth the effort. Treat yourself... Hippie Bob.

Took my mom and kids here for a late lunch. Everything was very good. Started with great bread with butter or spreadable cheese. Soup and salad was very good. I had the prime rib, very good. My mom loved, loved, loved her lamb chops.Also had a reasonably priced kids menu, and they all liked their food(not an easy thing to do). It might seem a little pricey at first, but you get more than your money worth here.You can't leave hungry. Good, friendly service, and a nice, homey, comfy ambience.

The Colony House is one of those restaurants that only exists because there is nothing else to drive to within a short distance. They have a captive audience, and that's a shame. If they had a competitor across the street they might actually try to run a decent restaurant. The main dining room is charming and clean, decorated with an old colonial look. Old gas lamps and oil paintings. There are mismatched tables and chairs throughout the room which work to great effect. It's a nice atmosphere upstairs. Their downstairs dining room, which I had the misfortune of being stuck in once, really shouldn't be used as a dining room at all. The ceilings are ultra low (I smacked my head into the beam running down the middle of the room to the point of bleeding.) and the room is filled with the tables and chairs that were clearly rejected from upstairs for being in too much of a state of disrepair. If you're going to try this place, definitely avoid the downstairs dining room at all costs. The menu selection itself isn't bad... a typical steak, fish, chop, pasta place - now if only they hired someone that knew how to cook it all. I have been here for the all-you-can eat Friday night fish fry, which is always well attended because it is dirt cheap. The fish itself is ultra greasy and of low quality. They also offer a baked fish on Fridays, which looks simply dreadful. Their pork chops are laughable. I was served two ultra-thin, overcooked pieces of pork that were so tough I couldn't cut them with a steak knife. I would have had an easier time eating the tongue from my leather shoe. I also tried their "secret recipe" tomato soup. I don't know what the secret ingedients are, but this soup had such an odd flavor, the "chef" might want to search for a new recipe. Everyone at our table tried it and no one thought it was good. I think this place is popular because it seems to hold a bit of nostalgia for the locals (two of which took me here for dinner). It has been here for many years, but with several different owners. I think the locals that have enjoyed the Colony House in the past still remember what it used to be and choose ignore the restauant it has become. I certainly won't be back for another try.

I had heard so many good things about this place so we went last night. My wife ordered the large bacon-wrapped scallops-it was $20.00 and I ordered the veal oscar w/ bearnaise sauce for $25.00. She received 7 TINY scallops that were literally 7 very small bites. My bearnaise "sauce" was bearnaise SOUP--the 2 small cutlets were served swimming in what they called sauce--terrible. We ordered the twice-baked potatoes:what we got was a potatoe skin filled with mashed potatoes-someone forgot to tell them it needs to be baked-we could not eat them even though we were still hungry. Our $10 shrimp cocktail consisted of 5 medium sized shrimp. With a glass of wine each and $77.00 later I walked out feeling truly disgusted that this place has a good reputation!!!
