Good food but not over the top! I had the duck rolls for an appetizer, they were good, and vegetable ravioli, the cream sauce was a little heavy , along with two beers and the total was 40.40! Little steep for bar food and not a pretty place to eat in !

This place rocks! Chef Chris and his staff are extremely accommodating even on the busiest of nights. I am excited to go there on any occasion and have never had a bad meal!!! Definitely worth the trip to this dive bar/restaurant

Combines almost everything a person could love: amazing seafood, dive bar atmosphere, perfect old fashions, bad art and great service. Love this place

The staff is great and the food is even better. It is truly a 5 star dive bar as others have mentioned. My favorite places are always the ones that do not look 5 star on the outside. I have been here at least half a dozen times and have never had anything that was below awesome. I have driven an hour just to have the She Crab Bisque. Do not go there without have it. They are very flexible on the menu. If you want one kind of fish with a different prep, they are happy to accommodate you. Some may say it is pricey because it does not have the 5 star atmosphere, the the food is worth every penny. Keep up the good work, can't wait to return!

Best Seafood in Northeastern Wisconsin! Only time I've had something close was in Key West.

  • Dalton D.

A good place to eat because of the many different types of food there's seafood sandwiches and steaks. The only thing that is a little bad is the pricing but everything is worth the price you pay. I would recommend the scallops with the green beans.

  • Lauren M.

Really awesome little spot. Fish was super fresh and cooked just right. Scallops were equally delicious. I absolutely love they fact that's it's a tiny little bar and just one guy (owner, I'm assuming) cooking in front of everyone. Can't wait to go back!

  • Andrea N.

I very rarely give 5 stars but WOW what a gem! Their motto "5 star at a Dive Bar" really says it all. The menu changes daily and you can choose from fresh, never frozen snapper, swordfish, king crab or filet or a 20 0z rib eye or pasta with fresh seafood or other meat. I chose the New Orleans pasta. Shrimp and andouille sausage with peppers, onions and a 3 cheese blend. I am a pasta snob and I loved it! A little kick. If you are in Algoma....u must stop!

    (5)
  • Mercedes B.

5 star dive bar is right! You would never know it from the outside, but the food here is amazing. I hear that the menu changes regularly, but the swordfish au gratin was delish! Everything tastes very fresh, and the menu options were updated as food was delivered through the back door. It is pretty small on the inside, so unless you arrive early (or late), be prepared for a wait. It will be well worth it though!

  • LaVonne B.

The food was so incredible, I can hardly put it into words! We had the Waloo dinner and the shrimp and grits. My husband said it was so good he actually cried! My Waloo was so tender, it melted in my mouth. This was truly one of the best meals we have ever had!!!! If you are in Algoma, you would be a fool to eat anywhere else!!

  • Olivia K.

I had the salmon pesto parm and The mashed potatoes also. Our waiter is really cute. We had excellent food. We sat outside, and had live music, with the musician taking requests if you wanted. Great selection of wine and great selection of seafood. You can see the waiter on the greenbay packers. "He's so cute" exclaims my friend.

The first time I went here was the first time I've tried duck. It was so delicious! Perfectly cooked - nice and pink in the middle. I went back with my mother a second time and the duck wasn't as amazing as the first time.. maybe a little overdone? This past weekend I was excited to go there for duck (again). Some of our party wasn't there yet so we couldn't get a table. We were told there would be a wait - which ended up being about an hour. We ended up eating at the Saloon across the street. It's too bad we didn't get to eat here because this place is amazing. There was no duck on the menu that night (with the exception of an appetizer) so it wasn't a big deal. I'll still come back another time.

  • Nathan U.

From the first impression walking in, you would think this is a place to get a burger. Upon closer inspection of the menu, you quickly realize this is no ordinary dive bar. As they say, "food that is 5 star in a crazy dive bar." She crab bisque, romaine salad, and the best porterhouse aged 20 oz. steak I have had to date. Must try this place. Very tight quarters, so expect to wait, but well worth it.

  • Colleen N.

We had an amazing first experience last night at Skaliwags! It was a busy night so we waited about an hour across the street at the Saloon after putting our name it at the restaurant. We then got seated at one of the FOUR tables in skaliwags. Everything was delicious, the crab and crawfish dip, the crabcakes, pesto salmon and seafood pasta! We finished every bite! The sides to my crab cakes were great, especially the maple sweet potatoes! I'd love to go back!

  • Bobbie B.

Skaliwags is a hidden gem in the small town of Algoma. Chef Chris came from New Orleans and is an amazing chef. Truly 5 star dining! We have been there many times in the last couple of years and every time it is NOT a disappointment. We usually let Chef Chris bring his choices to our table and we have loved every bit. We have had scallops, escarole, tuna, oysters, steak and yes like other reviews the grilled romaine is a great way to begin a meal. The she crab bisque is very creamy and delicious.

  • Christa B.

This place is so funny. A little bar and a second dining room now with great food. The waitress told us that Chef Chris gets a call from the captain of a ship in Hawaii each day and orders fresh fish that gets to Skaliwags in 24 hours. I had the grilled romaine salad which was fabulous with blue cheese, bacon and balsamic. I also had the coconut shrimp rolls which were light, sweet and crispy. My boyfriend had the Parmesan pesto salmon which was so fresh and flavorful. We had a great night here! Such a little gem in Algoma!

Could be one of the top 5 restaurants we've tried. We travel often and have experienced restaurants around the globe. No real expectations going in. We relied on our fellow yelpers. Impeccable service from a well informed staff. They were able to accommodate everyone in our party including the non seafood eaters. The drinks served in mason jars were delicious. We tried: gator bites, grilled romaine salad, coconut shrimp egg roles, shrimp bisque soup, barramundi, crab cakes, and the best scallops wrapped in brisket. Can't wait to return on our next from Chicago to the southern end of Door County.

    (5)
  • Sho D.

Appreciate all the Yelpers beforehand in not leading us astray. Stayed the weekend in Door County and drove an hour there and back to Skaliwags just to taste the deliciousness. It was worth it. This place is tiny so you may have to wait awhile if you don't get there early, but they will get you hooked up with drinks and send you to another bar across the street while you wait. We were thankfully sat very quickly. All the servers and the owner were so kind and our food was amazing. Though the menu is constantly changing, here is what we had: Appetizers: Grilled Romaine. She Crab Bisque. (I understand these are on the permanent menu) Entrees: Crab Cakes. Bleu Cheese Filet. (these two were on the changing menu) 5 stars for the food and service. Though the place was tiny and crowded, it made for a very warm atmosphere.

I ordered the seafood pasta that was prepared in a light, salty broth so the sweet flavors and texture of the lobster, scallop (only had one), and mussels were highlighted. My husband ordered the arctic char, which was seasoned and seared perfectly. Too bad it was too small of a portion for him so he left still hungry. A friend ordered the scallops that I was envious of - the bite she shared was so yummy. That's what I'll be ordering at my next visit. The other 3 friends in our party ordered steak entrees which were perfectly prepared as well. IMHO, the seafood options are by far the most impressive.

    (5)
  • Karen T.

Wow! What an excellent surprise. Dive bar look but some of the best seafood I've ever had - seriously! I had the seafood pasta - decadent. My husband had scallops - loved them. This is not Olive Garden pasta - amazing food and flavors. And, a great tap beer list. I would go here again and again. Don't let the appearance fool you. You will love it.

  • Sarah M.

Chef Chris is unbelievably friendly and personable! The food was fantastic. All four of our party ordered different entrées, all were delicious. The appearance is offsetting at first but don't let looks deceive! Also, Chris is opening an expansion soon with 40+ more seats. Be sure to order the fried cheesecake for desert.

My fiancé took me here for my birthday dinner. The cooler was out but we were able to have drinks in the staging area and move to Skaliwags 2 for dinner. Service was outstanding from everyone. We had the grilled romaine, which is a must try. I had the scallops and they were amazing and my fiancé had ahi tuna, also quite good. We really enjoyed this spot and will definitely be back. One more thing, drinks and wine served in mason jars. Awesome touch!

Keep coming back can never get enough!! Amazing selection and always a different menu! Had mako and jalepeno cheddar grits was superb moist and delicious!! Everything is always fresh :)

Went for the first time last night and it was incredible. The 4 of us absolutely loved our food and the staff was awesome. If you are looking for a fancy restaurant this is not for you. The place is a self admitted dive bar and that is what you get. Tons of character and fun!

Great service. Even better food. Not your average small town food. You won't be sorry you came to Skaliwags

We were looking for something to do in the roaring town of Algoma and wound up here at Skaliwag's. It was after all bookmarked on my list to try. I was drawn to this place because of all the good reviews by fellow Yelpers. This is why I yelp. They were spot on. This hands down a 4 or 5 star place. The food is what you'd expect in an upscale place. I asked if they had sushi. The bartender said the Kampachi Ahi Poke was like sushi. So I ordered that. When it arrived I was surprised to see it was not a traditional sushi roll. This was a salad with Kampachi and Ahi in it. There were onions, garlic, fresh ginger, some marinated greens, and other exotic vegetables and of course the fish. It was all marinated in with a dressing that is indescribably good. All the flavors totally complimented each other. I would say there was a little much on the plate to be considered an appetizer. I took a box to go. The presentation was nice. About the place itself, cramped. It may lend to the ambiance, but it is a dive. We got the last two seats at the bar. There were tables which we could have sat at. There are only 6, one of which was open. The bar is well stocked with the usual names in liquor. There are several tap and bottled beers. The thing I found a little annoying is the classis rock turned up a little too loud. We will defiantly be back. The menu changes frequently, but the novelties we saw tonight have our interests piqued. Things like Gator bites, Lobster ravioli, and Mussels & clams diablo to name a few. There is a whole sandwich menu available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, as well. Some of the items you'd know very well, others you'll only find at Skaliwag's

I can't say enough about Skaliwags. This is one of the best restaurants in the area, hands down. You walk in and it seems like you are in a bar like any other Wisconsin dive bar. Except the place is PACKED with people standing shoulder to shoulder waiting for the ever so valuable open table. The wait usually isn't that bad though. While waiting you see the staff bring out amazing dishes. Every dish that passes by you looks better than the last. Each plate has 5 star presentation, which seems out of place in a dive bar but it is a welcome thing. If you see a good looking plate come by and want to know what someone ordered, feel free to ask. Everyone here from the staff to the customers are always a friendly group. Be sure to order the grilled romaine salad. It's a head of romaine lettuce drizzled with a great balsamic, onions, and bacon sauce. And they are not shy with the bacon! I get it every time I visit. Also take note that they have two menus. One of them is right by the front door. That one has all their staple dishes that never seems to change. The other menu is right be the end of the bar. That menu changes often and always has great dishes with seafood you usually don't see in Wisconsin such as halibut and Ahi Tuna. Sometimes there are oysters and sushi too! The only gripe I can say is I have ordered steaks here on multiple occasions that were too done. I would order it medium-rare and it would be medium-well or well done. So order the steak one temperature lower than you would normally get. (That doesn't mean the steak isn't still good) The bottom line is make the trip to Skaliwags from wherever you are. It's worth the drive to Algoma. You will not regret it!

A great place to get a fantastic meal in Algoma. All I really need to say about this place: Wild Boar Egg Rolls. But I will also say Blue Cheese Filet. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Decent selection of beers, too.

Skaliwags was recommended to us with the tip to be there when it opens because it fills up fast. I am thinking this is Thursday in May, really? Fortunately we did because it is very small, maybe 40 seats plus people eating at the bar, and well within the hour is was full. We had a very good time; the Captain and his First Mate are very engaging. They had recently reopened after a winter break. They love what they are doing and for no other reasons Skaliwags is a funky, fun experience. So why the hesitation? While we had a good time I am not sure I would go back. The food was good, nice offering of fresh fish and quality ingredients, but there was something missing in the preparation that I think they need to justify the check. The kitchen is more of a short order line and they need to tighten up the execution. They have plans for an outdoor area and separate building for reservation dining.

We had 6 in our group and everyone loved Skaliwag's. Eariler in the day we got a tip to eat there, we were told there would be a wait but to stay and eat. The wait was not painful, the weather was beautiful and we sat outside listening to live music. The food was fabulous and having Chef Chris come out to our table and share his story with us was a treat. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Steaks and seafood are the specialties.

Give me a break! This is quite possibly one of the best meals I have ever had! Went with the yelp suggestions and for the grilled romain salad. The reviews did not exaggerate. Fabulous! Crab bisque-rich and full of flavor layers. Chef Chris's recommendation: fresh blackened mako with balsamic glaze on a bet of jalepeno and cheese grits and fresh asparagus spears. Yum!!! Don't want to forget the best old fashion sour; muddled with fresh slice of orange and maraschino cherry. Our yearly trip to see a packer game will always include having dinner at skaliwags!

Wow. Wow Chris and heather run a hell of a business. And Chef Chris is amazing. Heather is great welcoming us and others... Of course they heard it a thousand times "please expand" u do a great thing.... Don't make me drive 125 miles to wait 2.5 hours to eat. Unbelievable food

Their motto "food that's 5 star in a crazy little dive bar" hits the mark! Found this place two years ago and look forward to it when I visit Algoma once a year. Great seafood. I had the scallops and they were perfectly seared and fresh. She crab bisque was fantastic. Ask the curly-haired bartender to make you an old fashioned! Can't wait for next year!

Good stuff in Algoma! Our group of seven adults enjoyed a few appetizers: wings, edame potstickers, and smoked romaine lettuce with bacon. They were all good. We've eaten in Algoma several times and this was the best ever. For dinner I had the lobster ravioli! Loved it! My husband had a burger which he liked. Everyone enjoyed their dishes and drinks. The hours are kind of sketchy. Opened at 4:30 on Saturday. It seems to be open for lunch from about 12:30-2:30 too. There isn't a lot of seating so come early. The chef was very visible and personable.

Chef Chris & Heather took the best care of us & everyone in the place. It feels like we were guests in their kitchen. We went 2 nights in a row! It is a tiny place, very communal eating feel. The grill & kitchen are right there for you to watch your food prepared. Food Channel & Travel Channel playing on the 2 TVs. Parking on the street, no trouble in November, probably more difficult in summer. We tried: the she crab bisque, grilled romaine salad, crawfish ettoufee, cajun fried pickles, fried green tomato with lobster topping, lobster ravioli on asparagus, Russian scallop on cheese jalepeno grits & asparagus, blackened steak with blue cheese with sun dried tomato pesto mashed potatoes w balsamic-chocolate reduction, & apple pie. Everything was excellent, taste, presentation & portions. Absolutely amazing experience! Mention of a lunch truck sometime in the future...we can't wait to see how Chef Chris will transition his kitchen into this newest delightful form!

Ordered entree sampler of light flaky fish for wife, heavy fish for me. Heavy choices I made (chef could have made choices) uku, ahi tuna, sailfish, scallop. Light was waloo, mongchong, salmon, Hawaiian sea bass. On mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, n grits. With asparagus. Enjoyed all.

What an incredible find. Came to Algoma for a fishing trip & decided to check Yelp & consult our boat guides for a good dinner spot, and went with Skaliwag's. We walked into what looked like a run-of-the mill midwestern dive bar, and were immediately greeted by the off-duty sous chef who warmly welcomed us and grabbed drinks, telling us Chef Chris would be over in a minute. He came over and described the many incredible dishes, and ended up customizing an appetizer sampler of seared tuna, crab cakes, and fried gator tail - incredible! For entrees, we tried stuffed pork chops, escolar (the most incredible tasting fish we'd ever had!), and a massive porterhouse steak. All of them were incredible. It's not a place to go if you're in a hurry, but if you enjoy food created with incredible attention to detail in a place where you can get to know the chef while you eat, you can't beat Skaliwag's. Northeastern Wisconsin is very lucky to have such a gem of a restaurant to call its own. This place is truly a can't miss. P.S. The xango for dessert is a scrumptious way to end. Fried cheesecake covered in caramel sauce and pecans. It tastes a bit like high end state fair food - and I mean that as a very high compliment; check it out!

We went to Skaliwags tonight for dinner on a recommendation from an employee of a winery. The place was not on our radar until then. Suffice to say " one of the best meals of my life!!!". We got there right at 4:30 and were greeted by Chef Chris on the sidewalk. He said they weren't quite ready yet, but come in and have a drink. The place really is an old dive bar. Think of that old bar in every small town with the bar flys that seem to live in the joint. That is what this place reminds you of, but don't be fooled. Yes it is old, but the food that comes out of that kitchen is truly amazing!!! My wife ordered oysters Skaliwags, and I ordered the boudin for apps. We both loved our food. We next shared a grilled romaine salad w/ blue cheese. Not being big fans of blue cheese Chef Chris went easy on the cheese and it was delicious. The entrees are ever changing, so I can tell you what we had, but you may not see it on the menu for a while. My wife enjoyed the grilled marlin, which was excellent!! I had the jambalaya, which was phenomenal!!! We shared xango dessert. Again excellent!! See previous post for explanation. We were surprised that our bill was lower than we expected. Not inexpensive, but for what you get, you are getting a bargain in my opinion. The fish was flown in from Hawaii overnight. Very fresh. Where do you get that in the Mid-west w/o paying a arm and a leg? Several years ago I had a halibut steak smaller than my wife's Marlin and paid a lot more than we paid tonight and it didn't seem as fresh. A true gem of a restaurant. I will be back there again. I am conflicted though. I want everyone to know about this place, yet I want no one to know about it. I want them to succeed and stay open, yet I want them to be my little secret. Chef Chris and the staff are very engaging, friendly and accommodating. They will cater to your requests. For example: We got the 2nd to last xango when I overheard from the kitchen "86 the xango." Well Chef Chris came out to the group of 4 next to us and said there was one left. He told them he would divide the last one into 4 pieces and they could get a different dessert with it. Where do you see that happen? Many many thanks!

We found this place on Yelp while traveling from Door County to Miishicot, Wisconsin last year. What a pleasant surprise. A rare find! We went two nights in a row. It's truly amazing! We ordered the crab cakes each with a different 5-star presentation, the stuffed blue cheese fillet. The food is fantastic! Might have to wait to be seated but it's well worth it ~ you'll be in for a real treat!

Simply amazing food. Very unique establishment. You'd never think you would find it in this small of a town, needless to say it's definitely worth the drive and the price if you go.

Don't judge the book by the cover..... because the cuisine here doesn't match the place! It is a very small space with limited seating, come early for a table. Really an unexpected pleasure in Algoma! I had a burger which was really good, but I missed out on the truly exceptional food that others at my table ordered. I guess I was fooled by the 'old Wisconsin Bar' theme inside and outside. The Chef really creates great dishes. Order food you'd order in a 'fancy' restaurant. You won't be disappointed!

    (5)
  • Anna N.

A cool little divey bar with some of the greatest food you can get. I came for lunch and Chef Chris took my drink order, an Arnold Palmer, and it was the best Arnold Palmer I've ever had. He actually muddled lemons and sugar together before adding tea. They put that care and flair into everything they make here. The food is unique and decadent. The menu makes you want to order everything off of it. We finally settled on shecrab bisque, peking duck spring rolls and the scallops. The bisque was insane! The flavor was so rich and the crab was incredibly tender (and there was A LOT of crab). The duck spring rolls were great too. The scallops were perfectly cooked and big. All in all a really nice, delicious, fancy tasting lunch in an absolutely not fancy setting. 10/10 experience!

This place is highly OVERrated. The food was overpriced. The waitstaff was not knowledgeable, organized, or professional. The cooks were also in foul moods. Overall, the place had a very negative vibe. We had a bad experience in which something should have been comped but was not. I would not return.

  • Michelle H.

Head here for an unparallelled food experience in Algoma. We have been several times - ask the Chef what's on tap that day and he'll delight you with freshness, variety and great tasting food. I am really impressed with how the team at Skaliwags makes it their business to please you. Try the grilled endive salad, the Kick A** BLT, any fish special, the steaks are darn good, etc... Wine isn't half bad, but the beer selection is better. Thanks you Skaliwags for coming to our fine town. Please stay! And by amount of diners I see for lunches and dinners, I think you'll be here for a while!

I get the fortune of doing business in Algoma on a semi- regular basis. As a So-Cal native I have to say the mid-Western pallete is generally a little less than discerning..that said, this place is a true find. The owners apparently came up from Florida & Georgia to bring a little more flavor to the area...from where I sit, the mission has been accomplished.

As people are saying here...do not let the look of the restaurant fool you...the food is really good!!!! We bumped into the place while walking around the town where we just stopped over for a night en route to Ephraim and were skeptical at first ut I am glad we over came silly skepticism . My husband the awesomest steak and I had the sea food pasta. I liked the steak better actually. The staff is so friendly. If anyone is every making a stop in this town on their way to door county, please make a stop here. It can compete with your madison memories of good food :) ( i.e. if you are from madison)
