Murphy's Law in action. Avoid this place. I really wanted to like this place. Most of the Yelp reviews seem positive which is usually a good sign. But I'm not sure what they were reviewing, my experience was a miserable one from start to finish. Let's start with the service. Poor. The server might have been new (I got that impression), but he was literally running around - like a chicken with his head cut off - making all the diners squirm. There weren't that many of us, either. So his dashing back and forth at a near run seemed excessive. He was trying, and the ding against service isn't because of the pace of food coming out of the kitchen, it's thanks to the server's constant running, the strange noises he was making with his mouth the whole time, and the way I was scared anything delivered to my table was going to slide right off and land in my lap. The decor inside this place is nothing spectacular. Every time the door opened, I was hit with a blast of freezing air despite being deep inside the restaurant. It was really unpleasant. The layout also caused some problems with the cleanliness of the place, so let me move on to point three. Cleanliness: feast or famine, and mostly famine. Incredibly Poor. My first experience with the rushing server was the man running to clean off the table where he meant to seat me. He used a bleach solution to sanitize the glass table top. Now, this is a stupid idea for numerous reasons but the two that ran through my head as I gingerly sat down were 1) Gah! I need to watch out or I'm going to get bleach on the sleeves of my shirt, and 2) That's a really unpleasant smell to try and eat with. I got up to wash my hands before my meal - letting the bleach dry on the table some - and went back to the restroom. I wish I hadn't. Set aside for a moment how dirty the back of the restaurant was; there was an open tub of chicken parts about three feet from the bathroom door. That's not hyperbole or exaggeration, there was a big tub of diced chicken pieces open to the literal eau de toilette sweeping out of the restroom. No saran wrap cover, either. Which leads to the food. Poor. I ordered the pad thai with two "stars" of spice (out of four). The first bite told me that the beef, too, had been stored warm and open to the air. It had that bitter metallic taste and rubbery texture indicative of badly prepared and bloody meat that had been allowed to rust in a warm kitchen for at least an hour or two. Served only with a little shredded carrot and sprouts, the pad thai lacked any sort of real texture and was flecked with a huge amount of burned carbon from the dirty pan in which it was cooked. The spice level was off; even at a "two," the burn was more along the lines of "let's cover up the taste" than "let's make you cry with joy." I asked for a plate of cilantro or greens to mix into the pad thai and was informed that "they don't serve that with pad thai." All around this was a miserable dining experience. Normally, I'd give a place two trips before reviewing it, but there's nothing here to justify a second trip.

I've stopped in here a couple of times for takeout. There's nothing about the decor of the place that inspires me to want to eat here - it's not bad, just a bunch of generic stuff that feels a bit tossed together. The front room is small, but not unpleasant. The hostess is also the waitress and takes the to-go orders - she can be busy, but she's quick and helpful. The food is really good! Tonight I had red curry chicken, and the sauce was nice and light, not heavy like it can be, and it was full of fresh veggies and flavorful basil leaves. The price is right - actually, a good deal for the quality.

Yum! I had Swimming Rama. I chose the spice level of 3 of 4 which was spicy-nice. There was a healthy portion of beef, fresh vegetables, and wonderful peanut sauce. The lunch price was $7.95, dinner $8.95. Comfortable decor in ding area. Nice server. The place on the smaller side with 10 or so booths for 2 or 4, and some tables.

Thumra Thai is a great gem located in a strip mall. The prices are completely reasonable and the portion size is huge... Definitely enough for leftovers. My favorites are the curry fried rice and the cashew chicken. I noticed there are negative reviews about the service (which really surprises me) because in my experience at Thumra Thai the service has been great. Although the waitress (which I think may also be the owner?) may not speak very loudly (or very much), she's very helpful about suggesting dishes. The food is delivered quickly. The first time I went, I thought the curry fried rice was too sweet, so the second time I went, I asked if it could be not as sweet - which I'll admit is a pretty high maintenance request (but it happens to be my favorite dish) and they were very accommodating. If that's bad service, then I don't understand at all. Overall, a great Thai restaurant that I'll definitely be coming back to.

Depending on the day/time, the owner's adult child may have written a response to my original review or not. Everyday since my original post, there are updates or removals to their response. My intention with my review was to give honest feedback to the Yelp community. The food here was poor and the service, even worse. What happened after my review will probably seal the fate of this restaurant since the owner's offspring continues to post and un-post personal attacks on my character. There is no personal vendetta against this business, rather I provided an observation of my experience, which has been deeply made worse by the absolute lack of courtesy or professionalism displayed by this business. Review: My sister and I have a common love: Thai food. I was excited to try this place after reading some of the reviews. I missed the review on the pad thai, apparently. We ordered the yellow curry, chicken fried rice and the chicken pad thai. There were 2 adults and 2 small children in our party. The yellow curry and fried rice were good- nothing exceptional but nothing to complain about. The chicken pad thai, however, was awful. It was heavy, buttery, off-tasting and extremely rich. We kindly brought it to the server's attention that it tasted a bit "off" and her response was: you'll pay for it and don't get it next time. And she let us know the food was cheap. What?! Are you kidding me? Next time? Definitely not. Terrible, terrible service and mediocre/ poor food.

  • Jeong H.

It's okay. However, there are many Thai restaurants that taste better. It's a little bit cheaper than other places.

I went during lunch with some co-workers, 7 of us and they already had a table to accommodate which was great. They weren't necessarily great English speakers/writers so we had to make sure we heard "shrimp" before we were satisfied that she had gotten the order right. Got the drunken noodles and they were really good. Pretty much everything I expected and made them sans mushrooms which I appreciated. I wouldn't say there was anything special however, there's no such thing as no spicy at this place so all you chili lovers will enjoy this place. I got a 2 start and was gulping down the water. Granted I don't have a huge tolerance for spicy but I'm well versed and enjoy kimchee with the best of them. One thing that sort of irked me was that they didn't ask to split to check. She just put it on the table and expected us to know how what her abbreviations of 1cp meant (It means 1 star chicken phad thai). Most of us had cash and the rest opted to just split the bill 4 ways with card regardless of what they had originally ordered, mainly for simplicity sake. Overall, it's a very homey feel. Postcards on the wall and simple decor. Nothing I would go out of my way for if I was craving thai but phad see ew for $9 and some egg flower soup is a pretty good deal for lunch.

Great find in Totem Lake! We just visited this place after looking in Yelp. My wife was very reluctant to eat here since it was not busy. The atmosphere is a little quaint but the food makes up for the lack of ambiance. We ordered the standard Pad Thai and Pad See Ew and Chicken Satay. We typically don't finish our food, when we order Thai, but this place was "lick the plate" good. My wife, who is an introvert, spoke with the owner to let her know she had the best Thai food this side of 405. She also made me write this review to let others know how good their food taste. If you can get her to speak, you know your food is good.

Likes (will order again): tofu Phad See Eww tofu Yellow curry Fried Spring Rolls (Egg rolls) Dislikes (won't order again): Fried Banana (I prefer the traditional way of using flour/ batter mix taste better than using egg roll wraps for fried banana) Mango and Sweet Rice ( Mango was yummy, sweet rice didn't like as much) The couple who runs this resturants are nice. Food is good. Will be back for more!

Excellent. Strip mall location belies the quality of food and friendliness of staff. Well done!

Called in for take out on Sunday night wanting to try a new Thai place in Kirkland, and the reviews on Yelp were good, so off we went. The wait was 30 minutes, which surprised me for a Sunday night, but hey, maybe a good sign. They must be busy. I ordered some spring rolls, Tom Yum soup and Phad Thai which is pretty basic stuff. The soup was probably the best, with a nice balance of heat and sour, but the vegetables were still a little crisp and not overcooked. PT was just okay. Good flavor in the noodles, but it was lacking the crunchy bits on top that I like to mix in. There was a scattering of some bean sprouts and slivered carrot, but I was hoping for more, along with some peanuts, cilantro and a little lime to squirt on for flavor. It was just fine.

Have never been disappointed over the past 3-4 years of visiting. Haven't left a review before though, and after stopping by tonight for some pick-up I thought I was due for one. The food, namely my favorites - the phad thai and spring rolls appetizers w/plum sauce- is great. Service is genuine, they are a small place. Tonight I stopped to place a to go order, and they were slammed busy, but accommodated quickly and as best they could. The spice star range is 1-4, and I honestly have to wimp out at a 1, because 2 is pretty spicy for me, though I normally can take more at other (albeit more Americanized) places. The bonus to it all though is that I eat gluten-free as a celiac and all of the "traditionally should be" gluten-free thai dishes here, are! The spring rolls are delicious crispy goodness, the other dish sauces have never made me ill, and I have several celiac gluten-free friends who agree.

So I went here for dinner after craving some thai food. I ordered the green curry with prawns and got about halfway through if before discovering a large black hair floating in my curry. The lady apologized and quickly replaced my food. When something like this happens I would expect a refund or at the very least a small discount, but I still paid full price for my meal. Still giving 2 stars because while this unfortunately happened, it was a nice place with good service and excellent food. Had there not been a hair in my food I would give thumra 4.5/5 stars.

We used to frequent this place weekly, for about 5 years, and then we moved away to Northern California. In the past year we have been traveling all over and have had the opportunity to drive across the country. We have tried many, many Thai restaurants all over, and also, while we used to live in Southern California, we've been to countless Thai restaurants - this place is definitely one of the THE best Thai food restaurants, because they always cook with fresh ingredients, and every dish is made-to-order. I also known for a fact that they don't use frozen food items to cook with, so nothing is ever over-cooked or reheated. Our son had been invited to visit their kitchen before, we know they keep their kitchen very clean!! Can't say the same for many of the restaurants we've eaten at. We are soon to move back to Seattle, and guess where we are going for Thai food? :)

Needed a quick dinner and was not near our usual Thai place and decided to trust the 4 star rating. We were not disappointed. The decor is pleasant and clean. It was a quiet Sunday night and we were quickly seated. I had the Drunken Noodles (pad kee mao) with chicken. I asked for 3 stars but was encouraged to go with 2 stars (I later read their spice rating is 1-4 and runs a little hot) and it was just right. The noodles were extra limp and there were not very many veggies, but otherwise the dish was tasty and well done with plenty of chicken. She had the Special Fried Rice with only 1 star spice. It was not spicy at all, but pretty tasty with the variety of meats and a few veggies. If we lived in the neighborhood, we might be regulars.

I just moved into this area from Oregon and I had been craving for a local authentic Thai restaurant. After a few reads through some reviews I decided on this one. Let me tell you..it is AWESOME. So delectable. They might be a little slow at cooking it but that is no problem for me for some good Thai! The place is small and cute and very humble. The server lady doesn't talk too much English but despite that she never gets my or my husbands order wrong! I would definitely recommend

Ordered takeout from here and was gravely disappointed with the pad Thai. The pad Thai noodles were white with no sauce on it. Cheap ingredients. It was too sweet. The pad see ew was pretty tasty.

Big fan of their kee Mao noodles and curry fried rice. Have to finish it with black rice pudding or mango sticky rice.

Khao soy was excellent. Server was polite and food was fast. Spice was just right (i ordered spicy). If you're looking for a cheap but authentic place to get some Thai I would recommend this place.

I used to drive to Seattle when wanting really good Thai food, and I am so upset I never tried this place sooner... I have now found a restaurant I would actually go out of my way TO totem lake to eat at (which is saying a lot). Incredibly good spices, clean without too much sugars, and not feeling uncomfortable afterwards with heavy oils. Underrated thai dish to try: eggplant chicken dish

  • Ryan B.

Pretty good thai food. The portions were large, and the food tasted like the sauce was really cooked into it (instead of just a touch of sauce on pre-cooked food, like some places). The ambiance was very homey, but I wasn't looking for a Michelin restaurant and was more concerned about the food. Delivered quickly, piping hot. Will be back.

If I ever find myself in the Kirkland area again, I will try this place again! So flavorful and delisious. Also very friendly waitress. I had the mussaman curry, which is a favorite of mine at Thai restaurants. This one was right up there with my favorite place! Possibly even better. Jasmin rice was also cooked to perfection! Such a great meal! Also priced really well. Yummy!!!

Two stars for great service but none for the food. Their pad Thai was more like pad see ew plus something else and was not tasty at all. The soup was different but way too spicy for two stars. And their spring rolls were stale.

  • Bar R.

Really good Thai food. This restaurant is a family run place and the food has a definite home cooked quality to it. Appropriately spicy with a perfect blend of sweet & sour.

  • Antonio V.

Their yellow curry with chicken for lunch was delicious. They do not have many options available, and the decor is a little plain. But the prices are very reasonable and the flavor is really good. Very quick and friendly service too.

Very good Thai place with an inconspicuous store front. I've only been there once but will definitely come back. It takes some time to get your orders but you understand why after you get it. Everything is freshly made to order and seasoned perfectly. I'm looking forward to coming back.

Food was okay. Music is the background was so weird and I sometime felt a bit uncomfortable listening to it while eating. We had chicken curry with coconut which tasted really good. And chicken with peanut sauce which tasted okay --although I would have expected it to be a bit spicier. We also tried another dish rice with beef: The dish was tasteless, specially the beef. We also got fried prawns and springrolls which tasted ol like everywhere else (nothing special. most probably they already bought them premade and frozen). The staff was friendly. I don't think that I found my favorite Thai spot yet.

Sorry to say the waitress was not friendly. The food was average but just not special.

With such positive reviews, I was expecting to love this place. 5 stars up the wazoo is usually a good sign. Maybe it was an off night when I went? I don't know, but the food was definitely off. The panang curry I ordered was runny, rather than creamy, and had no flavor. The thai iced tea was good, but seemed like they didn't use the right ratios of tea to milk.

    (2)
  • Angelica N.

Worst Thai food ever. Pad Thai didn't come with peanut sauce. Tasted like noodles and sriracha. I can make that at home. Come on. Way better places to go for Thai food. Don't waste your money and time.

  • Jay K.

Not sure where the other reviewers get anything above a 1 maybe 2 star for this place. I ordered the coconut shrimp and drunken noodles. The shrimp were butterflied and super thin, the breading was panko with no coconut, much less a coconut flavor. They were over cooked, so they were a little tough. The drunken noodles were bland, very little flavor, and the noodles were mushy. Not much more I can say. Not a place I can recommend.

Best Thai food on the Eastside, great service, consistent quality, good portions, very clean. Nice people as well. And shame on those bogus reviewers, this is a family run small restaurant, they don't deserve that kind of treatment.

Real thai food. Great prices and family feel. This is a small place with a small kitchen, but they're really accomodating. I loved this little place.

Decided to try a new place and ordered chicken pad thai and chicken drowned noodles both 4 star from Thumra Thai last night. The pad thai was DISGUSTING- overly sweet with zero spice. Pad thai is my absolute favorite food and I did not eat more than a couple of bites. That has to be a record for me... The drowned noodles were pretty good, however I had to taste them coming up as well as I got food poisoning and was sick multiple times throughout the night. STAY AWAY!!!

  • Kimberly K.

Best pad ke Mao (drunken noodles I've ever had). My daughter had fried rice and We loved that too. Son and boyfriend both had Massaman curry (the peanut and potato kind), and loved every bit of it. Coming back regularly.

This place was ok for me. Stopped here to try because we were hungry after a long day of searching for a car to purchase. Ordered the Phan Thai, phad kee mao and swimming rama. The portions were small for there people and I thought since it was family owned it would be pretty tasty. It was a slight disappointment, I was thinking that I could make this myself at home. Maybe I didn't order the right stuff...nah...it's an ok place, not bad but not great either. So you can decide if you'd like to come here and try it for yourself.

Nice environment. Today I had the green curry with white rice. I highly recommend it. Best thing is if you tickle the Chinese host, she giggles and speeks Korean. Great time! 4 star.

Their wide noodle dishes are the best I've had! I love Thai wide noodle dishes and often find them to be disappointing in most Thai restaurants, not here!!! Thumra'a wide noodle dishes are SO good!!! Great texture with phenomenal spices sauce/spices! I read it on their facebook page that their chef (the owner himself) has a secret techniques of cooking stir fried thai food without using any cooking oil and apparently that's how he's been cooking his food at Thumra! Kudos to the owner for making healthy + delicious food for customers! Overall Awesome Thai Restaurant! Great family owned place, super friendly family and great service! I can feel they truly love their customers! This place is a MUST-GO!! Give them a try :)

  • Frank S.

The place is small, and seems to be a bit empty... but good places come in small packages. I had the drunken noodles as others recommended. And I agree it was very tasty. Note don't expect fine dining. This is a place to go if you want quick, good food, at a really, really good price!

I just ordered the Phad Thai with chicken to go. It's not as bad as some people are saying, but it's definitely not great and I probably won't go back. Other than the strong ketchup flavor, it was relatively bland. Additionally, there was less chicken and veggies in it than any other Phad Thai I've tried. However, it definitely wasn't lacking on spice. I ordered a 2, and it was enough to make my nose run, so I'm not sure why other people are saying a 4 isn't spicy. As far as the ambiance is concerned, it was rather small and dark (although I didn't mind considering I was just picking my food up--just thought I'd mention this if it's something important to others). Overall, the Phad Thai was edible (and spicy), but not the best I've had. I judge Thai places on their Phad Thai, and this just didn't make the cut. I really wish more Thai restaurants would make Phad Thai without a ketchup/tomato base. The absolute best Phad Thai I've ever had was at Rice'n Spice in Queen Anne. They had two versions of their Phad Thai--one with a tomato base (American Style) and one without (Thai Style). The one without was SO good. Sadly, the Queen Anne location is no longer open, but they still have a small location in Bellevue, and I'd highly recommend it for some good Phad Thai. They don't even offer the tomato based Phad Thai at the Bellevue location; they only have the non-tomato base version.

You need to have their Pad See Ew!!!! I usually get the chicken PSE -- I love that they add carrots and cabbage instead of just broccoli. One of the best PSE's i've ever had and I'm so glad it's just down the street from my house.. This review has been updated. I initially gave it only 4 stars is because I wasn't sure if they used MSG or not and that's a big no-no to me. Below I've included a response to my review by the owner's daughter. Hence the 5 starts! :) "Thank you for your sincere comment. We truly appreciate your feedback. I am one of the owners at Thumra Thai and I am currently studying in the naturopathic medicine doctorate program at Bastyr University. I can assure you that we don't cook with MSG because our goal is to serve delicious as well as healthy food to our customers. We even get complains sometimes that our food is not flavorful enough. Our curries, for example, we try to use natural fresh ingredients such as real peppers to make it flavorful instead of using MSG, we often get complains from customers that curries at our restaurant are spicier than other Thai restaurants in the area. My dad try to cook stir fried dishes with as little cooking oil as possible which is very hard to do. Recently, we add bok choy to some of our special dishes because I read in research papers that bok choy is one of the main reasons why certain group of Asian people live a healthy and long life. Most of our dishes, customers can customize vegetables in the dish. I will be done with my school in four years and I am working on improving the restaurant toward serving even healthier food such as using only organic vegetables and etc. We, however, are a small business and we try to serve food at the price ranges that most of our regular customers can afford so we have been working to come up with best solutions to incorporating more organic and fresh ingredients in our menu. Have you try our most popular dessert which is black rice pudding? It is gluten free and dairy free. It also has a lot of antioxidants which is beneficial to our health. We love your feedback and hopefully, I will get to meet you in person when I am at the restaurant."

I came here for lunch while in the area. A little Thai lady sits you down and gives you the soup of the day and takes your order. She doesn't really speak very much but speeds around the restaurant and is quite adorable. Ordered the Pad Kee Mao (there's Pad Kee Mao meat on the lunch menu so make sure you specify with noodles if you're used to the traditional kind). I'm based in Seattle where Thai competition is fierce so I'm used to a certain standard. The Pad Kee Mao wasn't bad but not great either. Didn't have as much of a flavor that I'm used to. Overall, cute little restaurant owned by a family that will satisfy your Thai tooth if all else fails.

If you order drunken noodles, pad see ew and panang curry you will be happy! Otherwise stop complaining about other dishes. Lol. Oh and get a 1.5 star for spicy. In not sure what any spicier would be like?

I was having a huge craving for thai food and needed a place close by. I thought I would give this place a shot and so I called in my usual order. It took them a minute to answer the phone but I gave my order and they said 30 mins. When I walked in, there were a few other people eating which is a good sign, sometime I worry when there is not. But this place is TINY. Picked up my food and was on my way. I thought the thai food was pretty good. I would probably order from here again in a thai food craving pinch. I think it is better than this other place on the other side of the freeway, that is for sure.

My quest for decent lunch time pad thai in Kirkland has yet to be fulfilled... How sad. After reading raves about this place, I was all excited and ready to go. However, to my horror, my pad thai was bright red and had a ketchup-y flavor. Yuck! With every bite I regretted my decision, and left with the impression that I would never be able to find good pad thai around the Totem Lake area... What a shame :(

  • George C.

This is a good little lunch spot. Thumra is a hole in the wall type of place so the decor is nothing special. I ordered the Thai Chicken Salad and it was good. My friends ordered a couple of noodle dishes that they really liked. I would add this place to the rotation of lunch spots near my job even though I'm not a huge fan of Thai food. Thumra is tucked in the strip mall behind Burger King and next to Taco Del Mar. Give them a try!

  • Joy F.

I had lunch here on 3/15/2013. We arrived at 11:30. This place was awesome. I had the curry, my friend had the swimming rama. We ordered the side of Phad Thai, because common - you HAVE to try the Phad Thai at every singe Thai restaurant you ever go to. We were not disappointed. The wait staff were all nice, they didn't rush us out the door even though we stayed to chat for another 30 minutes after we were finished eating. Will definitely return!

Very clean restaurant, though I got takeout. I got the pad see ew, which was incredibly salty. It didn't taste very good at all (and was kind of mushy). The only thing I really liked was how the tops of the shrimps were cleaned off (where the black insides usually are).

Strip mall spots can be such a cool hit or miss pursuit. Sometimes you find a pot of gold, sometimes you're happy to get close to that. Thumra is reasonably close to being a pot of gold. First thing you see when you walk in is the pair of Coleman lanterns hanging from the posts flanking the vestibule. There's ivy around them. Then you walk in to a small, clean, tidy dining room. A couple tables, a few booths. Modest, but lovingly tended to be sure. This place is definitely granny-friendly. And what makes me say that? That would be the intense devotion to servingware that this place shows. Lots of different pieces of china, all of it nice, all of it sparkling clean. Special rice bowls, special appetizer plates, soy pots, chili paste pots, chili flake pots, trays for under the pots, trays for under the rice bowls, trays for under the special serving bowls. The sets don't all match each other, but the pieces in the sets do, and the overall effect is a nice cheerfully careless formality. When you meet the server, who much clearly be the owner and might very possibly be the cook, and see how incredibly nice she is, you see that the china has been planned with some affection for a nice meal among friends and family. I came by myself tonight and still ended up with service for four on the table, counting all the little pieces. Most interesting about all this china? Every pattern looks european, there didn't seem to be anything asian on the table. It's entirely possible that this restaurant was founded as an outlet for an antique habit. And the food, well, that was really good. Delicious jasmine tea (cup, saucer, pot, etc.). Fresh-tasting housemade pot stickers. Flavorful green curry. All for $15. I'll definitely be back.

The red curry is DELICIOUS but the pad thai reminded me of ketchup . Definently recommend the curry. It was so great!

Best thai noodle dishes I have had in the area. Try the Pad Ki Mao! It's owned and run by a family so service is going to be slow (especially for big groups or if they are crowded). Also, each meal will come out as it's done just like in Thailand :) It's worth it though!

Came here expecting something good because of the reviews. We ordered to go. Worst pad thai I've every had in my life. Flavorless, bland. I asked for 4 spicy and it was spicy, but that was the only flavor. No sweet, no sour, no nothing. flavorless. GF got the swimming rama. Hardly any noodles. Also flavorless and bland. We didn't finish it and we are still hungry. Don't go here. It's really terrible. I don't know what the good reviews were thinking. I'd give it 0 stars if I could.

I ordered the pad see ewe which was less sweet and more peppery than I'm used to. It was still pretty good due to the lovely noodles, just not my favorite. The tofu could also use a better preparation. It had the texture of baked tofu which, for me, didn't work in this dish. Also the inside of the restaurant could use a little livening up but I overall enjoyed my experience here due to the tasty food.

I like this place. FAST and fulfilling. Drunken noodles were very good. She made a substitution for me (broccoli for bell peppers). Plus there's adorable kitsch decor.

My roommate discovered this place last year when we got all of the snow. It was the only place we could find that hadn't closed due to the snow and the only business that was even open in the plaza. Fate lead us to one of the best family owned and operated restaurants I've been to. I think the restaurant is owned and operated by a three person family. I started going here a lot while I still lived in the Kirkland area. But that night we were served by the "mother" who served us every time but maybe once. Alone that night she was keeping the restaurant open despite being completely snowed in herself. The food is great, the prices can only be beat by fast food joints, and the service is one of a kind. I don't know if I should share this story or not... but the second to last night I was there I noticed a decoration that reminded me very much of a piece my grandmother used to have in her living room. After dinner I nostalgically admired it and after a moment or two drummed up the gumption to ask if I could buy it. It wasn't big or expensive, but it immediately had some intangible sentimental value to me and I was prepared to pay maybe... $50 - $100 for it? When I asked "mother" if I could buy it she immediately unplugged it, took it from its place and offered it to me refusing to take any money whatsoever! I was shocked and haven't before or since felt so humbled the generosity of a stranger. Well maybe not a stranger... certainly not anymore. I realized though that between having the only "open" sign on in a totally desolate snow covered parking lot, and serving each customer like they're a family friend... this is the care that goes into each meal that's served. Please don't start asking for their decorations... but please DO take a moment to enjoy some of the fruit of their hard work. The back of the menu tells a story about who their family is, how they came to the states, and how they opened Thumra Thai. Your taste buds and even your wallet will thank you!!!

Not too impressed by their curry, but I really enjoyed their pad thai. Pick up is easy, ordering over the phone is not. Lunch prices are pretty great

I had a terrible meal here tonight. The server lacked energy and speed. She took 4 to go order (and gave them their food promptly) while we waited 25 minutes to get three moderately warm dishes of food. The pad Thai was dry and lacked any sort of flavor, the garlic lover with beef was like a frozen PF Chang entree from the grocery store. It was all practically inedible and barely room temperature. This place was a waste of $35.... We will definitely not go back.

Someone wrote this is a hidden treasure in totem lake -- that's pretty much it. It's family-owned, and I know the whole family on first-name basis. That's how often I'm there. Very very affordable, huge serving sizes, and excellent cooking every time I come. I highly recommend the curry fried rice, massuman curry (I'm not sure if I'm spelling that right -- peanut curry), and the Tom Kar soup. If it wasn't so hot out I'd be there right now!

I went there over the weekend with my kid, and I personally think its food is same good as Bai Tong, the other Thai restaurant close to my office in Redmond/Bellevue area. I ordered the exactly the same food as last time I visited Bai Tong, and they tasted almost the same, but the price here was a little bit lower than Bai Tong.

I was hoping I would like this. I stopped by around noon today & the place was empty except for 1 table - that should have been a warning. I ordered the Phad Thai (no meat or tofu) to go. It was hot but that is all I can say - I ordered 3 stars but there was no heat. It was bland and also had the ketchup base which I really hate. Don't think I'll stop here again.

We recently discovered Thumra Thai in Totem Lake and was surprised how great the food was! My husband and I tried a few different dishes (drunken noodles, red & green curry, soups, fried rice...) and all of them are great! They are light, not too saucy, not oily (as some of Thai places could be). The food is seasoned just right and super tasty - It seems to me that every dish is freshly cooked at the time of your order. Not something been sitting in the pot for days just got dug up and warmed up in the micriowave. The BEST is the Bangkok Chowder coup which comes with the lunch special...!!! I'm getting hungry again just to think about it. Bravo all the way for the food at Thumra Thai! It's a great place for a great meal. It's a family-owned & operated restaurant and the service is just excellent! Oh yeah and it's very reasonably priced, too! ** update - after trying several other Thai restaurants around Kirkland, Bellevue & Redmond, I'd say this place is definitely top-notch!! Just simply great, freshly home-cook food. We've been back at least once or twice a week ever since!

Both times I have gotten take out here, I have gotten the Drunken Noodle with Seafood Combo. It is so amazing!!! The wide noodles, the mushrooms and veggies, the mussels, the shrimp, the calamari, the scallops! This is only $12, and there is so much in this box! The spices are amazing, the textures are great, the taste is pure awesome. I want to try other things on the menu, but every time I think of Thumra, I think only of drunken noodles. Mine was a 3 star, and it provided just the right amount of nose running and eye watering that I need to really enjoy Thai food. 10-15 minute wait time depending on the day/time when you order take out. I don't know if I want to actually eat there. It seems nice enough, but just a teensy bit awkward and stifled. I will for sure be ordering take out again to find out what the curries are like.

I found this place as it was suggested by Yelp as a place I should try if I liked Thai Kitchen in Kirkland. I had NEVER heard of this place, and yet I pass it all the time. I checked out the website and the prices blew me away. Most prices are from $7-9. I couldn't believe it! I had to try this place. My husband and I ordered take out and the people were very friendly. The food for a first visit met our expectations for this price range. You also get alot of food. We could have split one meal between the 2 of us. For the prices of the food and the quality you get it is a great deal. We definitely will be trying this place again.

  • Theresa P.

I can't trust a Thai place that doesn't do a good phad Thai. Ketchup flavor, hardly any carrots or chicken, mostly noodles. Tom Yum was OK, but I didn't like that the plastic container it was given to me in (take out) was melting after my 5 minute drive home.

  • Lisif W.

Went to Thumra Thai after reading the great reviews on Yelp, and nothing we had made me want to return. The prices are really good, so I guess if you are on a tight budget that would be a good reason to go. I am a huge fan of Noodle Boat in Issaquah, which is hard to get to from Kirkland, but I would rather drive 30 minutes each way and go there than go back to Thumra. That being said, the food was not gross, and the service was very pleasant. I'm just not sure what there is to rave about here.

Thumra is a hidden treasure in the Totem Lake area of Kirkland. It is located in a strip mall so it would be easy to pass this restaurant. As a previous review mentioned, when I entered the well-decorated dining room it was empty except one diner during a late lunch hour. Something I have a hard time understanding since I think the food there is good. I ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken ($6.95) lunch special to go. The order came with a cup of soup and a salad with peanut dressing. Portion size as mentioned previously is decent sized and considerable. Service was quick and friendly. Thumra is definitely one of the better Thai restaurants I have been to and will visit again.

I've been here at least two dozen times, yet I never yelped about it. This may sound like I was lazy [which I am and won't deny], but truly I was just keeping this secret from you, my friends. Because Thumra Thai is just that wonderful. It's like putting on a new pair of socks, or getting a care package. The food fills you up with love! I don't know what that first paragraph really means, but I can tell you this... there is nothing on the TT menu I wouldn't try, because I'm absolutely convinced they could make something I would typically find undesirable into something I need a doggy bag to take home because I resent the thought of discarding even a morsel of the delight. Yep, they're that good! Lunch specials are all $7 or less, include a side salad w/ peanut dressing and a cup of soup. I generally get the swimming angel with pork -- pork on spinach & beansprouts with peanut sauce: it's simple but perfect. Their curries and noodle dishes are also a hit -- fresh veggies and a 4 star hotness that is just enough spice to satisfy me without making me regret it later. The family that runs this place is super friendly and pretty much knows to start a mango smoothie when my boyfriend and I walk in. I've never been to Thailand, but if all the food there is this even half this good, I might have to go. Yum.

I moved to the area a little over a year ago and have been on the lookout for a good Thai place ever since. I stopped in here with a girlfriend on our way to a concert. The first, most important hurdle a Thai place has to clear with me is with their phad thai. If it is ketchup phad thai, we have a problem. We had a problem. Now, I have heard that this is the more "authentic" recipe, which may or may not be true. I don't wish to speculate. But what I do know is that it did not taste good. The ambiance was also sort of bizarre, in that we were the only people there for almost the whole time. At 6pm. On a Friday. One rude man stopped in to pick up take out, yapped loudly on his cell phone while he waited, walked around back into the kitchen several times to check on his order, and finally, after proclaiming he was in a major hurry, sat down at a table and proceeded to eat the meal from the takeout container. Weird place. I'll continue on my quest to find amazing Thai food in Kirkland.

Quality, price, and friendly. I was one of their first customers (I guess that makes me a celeb there). Anyway, typical family style asian restaurant. The wife runs the front with husband in the back cooking. Tonight I just went for Pad Thai. Simple but exquisite. I love that the beer is only $3.50, too.

I spent genuine time writing a review that expressed my thoughts, opinion and feelings about this restaurant a month or so ago. We ordered take out from Thumra Thai last night and when my daughter went to pick it up there was a bit of a wait so the owner (wife/mom) gave my daughter a plate of Phad Thai while she was waiting. Another nice, personal gesture from this very genuine place. Out of curiosity I came to check the reviews since my review offered other points of view that some of the previous reviewers may not have had. To my dismay, my review is being filtered. I checked the FAQ's here and understand why, it's because I'm not a frequent Yelper and I understand the need. However, I did spend my time contributing to a service and now wonder why I would be motivated to contribute on Yelp again. Apparently your opinion doesn't count until.....when is that? I encourage people to read all of the comments and also to select to read the filtered comments. I love Thumra Thai and am now disillusioned with Yelp.

This is my most favorite Thai place so far. I go there every week and sometimes more than once a week with friends. It's small and family run and the food is incredibly tasty! I guess its location is not very prominent and the decor is minimal. There is not too much crowd and I have never had to wait for long for a table. I am a vegetarian and love their Pad Kee mao noodles and Yellow and red curry. There is a homely touch to their service and we even got complimentary cut mango slices along with desert. Service could be slow during weekends.

My wife and I love Thai food and when we moved up to Kirkland, I think this was the first place we tried. It's been good enough that we really haven't made a big effort to look elsewhere. It's not the best Thai food I've ever had, but it's pretty good. I've tried a number of things (including daily specials) and haven't found anything that I haven't liked. As others have mentioned, this is a family run place, they even have their story on the back of the menu. I have had some odd issues in the past in terms of consistency in portion sizes on takeout orders, but overall this place serves good food at reasonable prices.

Only one trip so far, but will definitely go back. We both had tofu Pad Thai and liked it. My wife actually raved about hers. Prices pretty reasonable, large portions, and that makes it even better. Will update when I visit again. This could easily become our go-to place on the Eastside.

Stopped in with my wife/kids and was not impressed. Food just had an odd non Thai food taste. Ordered a few dishes but was most disappointed with the Pad Thai. Btw thats my fav. It's pretty sad when my kids said their Thai Tea was the best part of their meal. May give them a second chance because everyone deserves one.. That will not be anytime soon though.

nice food, easy price and warm greeting like from my own family member!!! I'm not hesitate to go for lunch here. i like many dishes, especially its Pad Thai. I can taste "Tamarind" which is very rare if you are not in Thailand.

I discovered this little gem about 5 years ago and now I'm inspired enough to finally write a review. I have consumed a LOT of Thai food in my life and this place takes the cake. I'm a massive Thai curry fan and every time I order I get at a curry dish + the red curry mussels + something random. Every single time I pick a dish out at random it's fantastic, I have consumed about 3/4 of the menu over the years and I love everything. My only thing is I wish the red curry mussels were a full dish and not just a side item, but that's just because they are so good. I order pick up all the time for myself and whenever somebody in my family is celebrating something we go here a good amount of the time. Its a low key cozy little place hidden in plain sight in a Kirkland strip mall and the food will surprise you in a very good way.

Pot stickers and thai fried rice with chicken. Delightful. I'm not a pad thai fan, but I've taken Thai cooking lessons and I've spent time in Phuket and Thumra Thai is as close to what-I-think-of-as-authentic-given-I'm-from-Montana (how's that for a qualifier?) Thai food as you can find in Seattle. It's incredibly dispiriting how empty I find the restaurant on Friday nights when I go to pick up food, but I keep hoping that they will reach a critical mass of customers that will keep them open for a long time.

  • Jhuanne M.

For some reason, there was no body in here when we came in. But they did have very very good Tom Yum, and the pad thai was very good. it's a nice cozy place to settle into for a late lunch.

This place is heaven. Owned by a family with authentic recipies and friendly service. The Tom Kha is delightful and filling and nothing is over priced. Do yourself a favor and stop by this lovely strip mall location.

I love this place. I drive from my new place in Bothell to get their food. Fried rice is always good and so is the Pad Thai. Couple that runs it is awesome and really friendly.

My boyfriend and I love Thumra Thai. It is a family owned business and the service is great. They have awesome Tom Kha soup and pineapple friend rice. The yellow curry is great too. We used to go to Napakao, but the last few times it was freezing in there and they charged me extra for 2 carrots in my soup- not good. Thumra Thai is not really in plain sight, but it's in an easy to get to location. Check it out if you love Thai food!

  • Amol A.

An absolutely amazing place.. In the words of Anothony Bourdain, if a restaurant is in a strip mall and next to a dry cleaner, its gotta be good. Thumra was real good (although the place turned out to be much smaller in square footage than I thought).. The King Salmon was so good that we had to order another one and over stuff ourselves. The egg plant lovers entree was a miss, but thats ok. The owner-mom was very polite and nice and I would definitely consider this place to be on my regular favorite list !

I'm surprised by the reviews on here. Maybe people have been living on the Eastside too long? I was NOT impressed by this place. Went in to pick up some takeout and even though there was only one other party (of four) in the restaurant, it took FOREVER to get our order. Added to that, while we were waiting, the MICROWAVE kept beeping. Ummm.... if I want leftovers, I can get those out of my fridge. Not sure why they were cooking things in the microwave?!? The food was ... weird. The flavors were different (not necessarily in a good way) from other Thai food I've eaten .... and I've eaten a lot of Thai food. The veggies were overcooked and very close to being mushy. Go to Thai Kitchen. A little pricier but so worth it. Or .... even better, take a few extra minutes and go to Pen Thai in Bothell.

One of my favorite Thai places ever. I've been coming here for many years and am never disappointed. My favorites are the green curry and the Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Chicken). And I nearly always finish with Mangoes and Sticky Rice. The owners are some of the nicest people you will ever come across in the restaurant business.

I love this place! I have been coming here for a few years now. The prices are reasonable, clean and consistent and the owners are super nice and always have a smile for you when you come in. Sure there are other Thai places in Kirkland but I would say if you were in the area it's definitely worth coming and trying them out you just cant go wrong... Yummy!

Nothing special here. Restaurant was clean, waitstaff was polite, but slow even though there were only 2 tables. Everything we ordered (including the salad) was covered in peanut sauce. Spring rolls were too done, just tasted like grease. Won't be back.

One of the best Thai places around!! Excellent food, good prices and great service. I have been to this restaurant multiple times and will continue to go back. The service is really fast and everything on the menu is very tasty. They also offer great lunch specials. I would recommend this place to everyone.

  • Zachary Sam Z.

A friend just moved to the area and wanted a quick, relaxed place to get some good food. Thumra Thai didn't dissapoint. The food was really good, service was really quick, and the price was way cheap. I had Pad Thai w/ Chicken & a Thai Iced Tea for $10. It's a shame that the restaurant was so empty - it's a great place to eat and the people are really nice. On the upside, that's probably why the service was so prompt. =P There was also karaoke playing, but neither my friend nor I spoke Thai... so we were up a creek on that one. For quick Thai, dine in or carry out, if you're in the area, you can't go wrong.

This a family owned little treasure in Kirkland. Their service is outstanding, they were extremely attentive and friendly. My husband and I had the Panang Curry and Drunken Noodles and loved both. Also, great prices and good portions. We will be back!

  • Mark C.

Pad Thai is very saucy/ketchupy, so pass on that unless it's what you like. Pad Kee Mao noodles are really good. Wasn't an entirely memorable experience, but if I worked around the area, I'd probably stop by and try other things. Mango smoothie was recommended on this site, but they don't use fresh mangoes, as we discovered.

  • S S.

I've been there a few times for dinner and takeouts. They have very good service and the lunch specials are very tasty. The atmosphere of the restaurant is not that great, so it's not really for a romantic date. The food is also very reasonably priced, so if you live around Totem Lake area, it's worth trying Thumra Thai.

If you want Thai food that tastes like food you'd get in Thailand, come here. I think they pound and mix their own curry paste because you can tell it's fresh and real. I went there for the first time a month ago and have been back at least six or seven times. The setting is not great but inside it's nice enough (nothing fancy). They're a little stingy with the vegetables, just like in a real Thai restaurant in Thailand, but will add more if you ask. Everything I've had so far has been great. Only dish that was sub-par so far was the Kao Soi; they must've thought we didn't know what we were ordering. It lacked the essential crunchy noodles, pickled cabbage, lime and cilantro leaves on top. Next time I'll just be more specific and say we want the real thing, not the dumbed-down American version. However, the curry part was stellar. EAT HERE A LOT!! Keep them in business so I can keep going there, too!

Not sure what their hours were but we went in close to 9pm and were still greeted and welcome by the waitress (probably the owner?). Ordered pad Thai, green curry, spring rolls, and Thom yum and each one of them was as good as it got. I've never been to Thailand so I can't tell if they were authentic Thai food but they were certainly delicious! Will definitely go back if I come to Seattle the next time.

*Update - we tired Thumra Thai again today and the food didn't disappoint again. The prices are pretty good too. We found out the restaurant had re-launched itself in May..it's under new ownership. The menu is still so full of variety and since it's family-owned there's very much a homey feel to it all. Our server was actually a little boy, the son of the owner I think - he was really sweet, but it's a bit difficult asking a 10 or 11yr old questions about the menu, so I figure that's gotta be one of the downsides to the place if we decide to go again. We ended up with what they called a jackfruit icecream with no (and I mean, NO) jackfruit in it...something I think that could have been resolved with better communication, but since they're really sweet people it wasn't a very big deal. Not an upscale fine dining establishment but just a great place to go out to on an evening when you don't feel like cooking. The food was very good and great value for money. Extensive menu and the server was very pleasant and attentive too.

I've been going to Thumra for a while now and it's always been good food. Price is not bad, maybe a little less than I usually pay at restaurants, and service is quick and quiet. Between me and my girlfriend we usually spend around 25 + tip. The drunken noodle is always something we get and a jasmine milk tea thing that's not really on the menu but the girl likes it. 3 stars is about right for us, not insane with our spicy, but it is Thai food so... isn't it supposed to be kinda spicy? Not sure why people are complaining about free stuff when olive garden is right across the street. I hear they have breadsticks.

I wish there was a negative rating I could give. I ordered a Pad-See-Ew Pork and Pad-Kee-Mao beef and this place screwed up this order really bad. I called to ask if they gave me the wrong order and the old lady there denied that I ordered what I did and then refused to fix the order. I had people watching me when I ordered that told me I said Pad-See-Ew so I know I'm not mistaken. Btw, the Pad-Thai I did get is terrible. They put soy sauce and vinegar in there!!! The Pad-Kee-Mao also was and not made properly. There were no bamboo shoots and they also add zucchini to it. The tastes were all wrong. Whatever you do DO NOT order food over the phone from this restaurant because if you do she will give you something else and then deny to your face that you ordered what you did and you might as well going into this place too because they don't make traditional Thai dishes or screw them up so bad you'll regret ever saying, "let's have Thai tonight". For me personally I will NEVER go back there again. It's bad enough when the food sucks but when they call you a liar they can go to hell. UPDATE: So instead of apologizing for misunderstanding my order the owner continues to deny it and blame me!!! I don't care how many years they've been in business. If you're looking to be treated as a liar and with disrespect by all means hurry up and visit this place before they go out of business.

We had a pleasant experience at this restaurant a couple years ago and was not disappointed after trying it again this week. The owner lady is very sweet though she cannot speak English well. Plates were fairly priced at about $10-$12 per entree, with fair portions. Ordered a Pad See Ew and a Red Curry - the beef was a little overcooked in the Pad See Ew, but overall the dishes were still very hot and tasty.

I love this place!! Consistent, delicious, delightful Thai food all the time! Their Pad Thai is my favorite!! I'll admit it looked bland the first time I saw it, but when I took my first bite its FULL OF FLAVOR!!! It's the best, I always crave it. Never too busy which is great because their service it fast.

An inexpensive authentic Thai restaurant with delicious dishes! The place is cozy and has interesting decor that somehow falls together well. The Pad See Ew is really good and although I'm not a huge fan of Thai curry, this place does it pretty well. Spice levels are 1-4; if you aren't a big fan of spice or are a baby about it (like me), I suggest 0-1 stars (even 1 was still spicy for me). I haven't tried their Mango Sticky Rice yet (not in season) but I have had the Black Sticky Rice, and it's always a great way to end the meal.

This place is grossed and I can't believe it has a 4 stars rating! Pad Thai was overly sour and salty. The noodles were soggy. The Garlic Delight was anything but delightful. Was bland, no flavors! Service was poor, with the server staying in the back the entire time.

What an underrated place. I have been almost a weekly customer at this place for the past 2.5 years and not once has Thumra Thai disappointed. I could tell they are authentic because it's a family run business - the husband is the chef and the wife runs the front of the house. She is always sweet and always smiles. I usually order the seafood drunken noodles, make it really spicy or 'ped ped', in Thai. The quality of the noodles is amazing - it's soft and appears freshly handmade every time. They are generous with their seafood and vegetables and the spice level is just right for me. I recently met a Thai family who live here and for an authentic Thai experience, they go to Thumra Thai every time. That tells you something. Although it's tucked away in an unassuming little spot, it's been my go-to Thai place ever since I moved into the area. And I don't think that's about to change anytime soon.
