Amazing sushi place with great flavor and texture to the rice. Rolls were pricy but very filling and worth every penny. Yam roll was great! I will be back for sure.

My hubby loves sushi and this is his preferred sushi location due to the selection, quality of ingredients, and preparation. We don't go out for sushi often so it had been a while since we had been there. I'm not a sushi fan so I usually go for teriyaki. This time I chose salmon teriyaki. It was perfectly cooked, delicious sauce. We also had gyoza on the side, disappointed that they weren't offered steamed, but enjoyed them fried nonetheless. Hubby ordered a variety of rolls. He loved everything that he ordered but wished that the nigiri rice hadn't seemed as though it had been preformed. We will definitely be back!

Excellent Sushi! Don't sit at the bar! I've eaten here twice and enjoyed my meal however both times I sat at the bar. The sushi maker appears to be the owner and verbally abuses his staff to no end. The staff seems to walk on egg shells and are distracted by the on going dissaproval. If you eat here make sure you sit as far away from the uptight sushi roller.
(3)Chris P.
Tons of sushi choices. Try the Lion King, amazing flavor. We will definitely be back again to try different sushi entrees.
(4)Sara Y.
Best Sushi in Bham, hands down. Great service and the fish is incredibly fresh and delicious. If you want sushi, eat here.
(5)Scarlett M.
We went in at lunch time and the place was absolutely dead. Surprising, because the sushi was actually quite good and their prices aren't bad. Maybe we caught them on an off day, because they deserve more business than this. Note to Disabled: Reasonably accessible, has its own parking lot.
(4)Adam K.
Sushi here was better than expected. To be honest, the only negative was the rice was not quite the best but maybe that was only on the visit I was there. Roll menu is quite large and when we asked they prepared a couple things off-menu. Probably the only place open on sunday night and stayed full through most of our visit. Service was good and thought all our orders came out at a pretty decent pace. Would definitely hit it up again.
(4)Frosty M.
I tried this place because it won the Cascadia Weekly best of. It does not make my best of...at all! I always order a Rainbow Roll, it's my go to and I have a good gauge. This was a small roll esp for the price, the fish was blah and they forgot to bring it altogether even tho I repeated the order twice. They did finally bring it I and comp'ed me for it which was cool and I am glad I didn't pay for it. Disappointing is the only word I have for it. The Monkey Brain was interesting though again nothing to write home about. And if you are going to use imitation crab, please state this in the menu. I will stick with my fav sushi place.

I just read one review and wish I had read it before trying this restaurant. I am from out of town and asked my hotel where I could get good sushi. I was told the Blue Fin is good but you had to get past the owners attitude. I tried but it was so obviously prejudice against any new clientele by the female owner that I could not stay. She was rude, indifferent, and obviously not interested in any new business. Do not go here.
(1)bruce f.
This is the best sushi in Bellingham by far. Consistently fresh and wonderfully presented. I wish they would offer some kind of discount card for regular customers to help us with the affordability. Even though, this is the only awesome sushi place in town. I've tried them all and always can't wait to get back to Blue Fin!
(5)Brian W.
Great sushi, but sooo expensive! I guess I could have cut back on what I ordered, but I really wanted to give this place a decent shot. I tried 3 different rolls. All were delicious! The only thing that left disappointed was my pocket book.
(4)Maya V.
Five stars for the sushi, three for the service. The servers don't really pay attention to you or seem to care about taking your order. The sushi is phenomenal and so is the selection. They have tons to choose from and it's delicious and fresh. The prices are very reasonable. Incredibly reasonable, actually. If you think this place is expensive go to a sushi restaurant in Colorado or Arizona, the fish isn't fresh and you'll pay twice as much.
(4)Lily Z.
Cons: The environment does not live up to the price or quality of the meal. Great sushi, beautifully set, and certainly not inexpensive- but if you didn't know that you'd think you were in a Quizno's. I listened to the guy next to me talk about specifics of Spartan life that I never wanted to know for an hour, because they try and cram in as many people as possible. Pros: Delicious food. Dragon roll was immaculate and California roll looked much fancier than you and I know it is. The server was very sweet and had the rarest of all server qualities- knew when to leave us alone. If I'm shoveling sushi in my mouth at 35 mph, don't ask "how is the food?".
(4)Najin K.
Ok service has gotten a lot better so I am updating my review. The sushi is still over priced but out of all places they have the best spicy tuna sashimi sauce but the tuna itself felt a little dry. The happy hour menu is much more reasonably priced! The spicy tuna roll is big and actually has some spice too it. I also enjoyed their tempura eel and dynamite roll.
(4)Taylor M.
Every time I eat at Blue Fin, restaurant or take out, it's always amazing! The fish is so fresh, definitely the freshest fish in town! Their spicy tuna roll is by far the best and spiciest spicy tuna I've ever had! Another great roll of theirs is the hot night! If I could, I would eat at Blue Fin every night!

So there *is* good sushi in Bellingham after all! I decided to try again to treat myself to sushi here after a long clinic last night, and I'm pleased that I can stop searching, because this is definitely my spot. As soon as I walked in, service was friendly and attentive, and I was promptly seated at a small table. Inside decor is very nice too. One thing I've pretty much resigned myself to is the mediocre tea that is served in asian eateries in this country; oversteeped and bitter, or else not much more than hot water. I could tell I was in for something good at this place as soon as I tasted my tea--it was a lovely Genmaicha with a deep complex toasty flavor, and served at the perfect time and temperature. The miso soup was similarly good, it was obviously house-made from fresh miso instead of being the cheap reconstituted stuff. (You know, when the cloudy bit keeps separating and you have to stir it back in? This wasn't like that.) I wanted to get a sampling of the sushi, so I decided to order the Sushi Dragon plate and a 911 roll. This gave me two rolls and eight pieces of nigiri. I'm glad I did it that way, because even though I really liked both rolls, the nigiri ended up being my favorite part. All the fish was of outstanding quality and was impeccably fresh, and the cuts were very generous. Not only did I love my usual favorites like the salmon and all three kinds of tuna, but more impressively, even the mackerel (which I normally don't care for due to its 'fishy' flavor) was soft, buttery, and had a depth of flavor I don't normally find. Service was great through the whole visit, and I didn't have to wait long to settle the check. I will be back to try some of the rest of the menu, and to have some more of that amazing nigiri sushi. It's probably a shade too pricey to have every single time I go to Bellingham, but that's just the way it is with sushi places--even the bad ones are expensive. Given the outstanding quality of both the food and the service, I felt like I got a great value here.
(5)Nicolas J.
General ambience needs some work. Better seating (chairs, tables, etc) and background music is needed. No one appreciates elevator Muzak. If there was a belt out in that would be phenomenal as well. HOWEVER! The sushi was extremely delicious! I could eat their sushi every day if I could!
(4)Maria G.
Great food, BAD service. We were about to leave got our check but didn't know they don't take Amex. So I got the check and card back while hubby was in the bathroom, I waited for him because of another card ...well, not even 2 minutes later the waitress came and asked if my husband gets another card or where he may is, in a way saying he ran off and I'm about to as well. Wtf give me a break $34 is nothing. That's not a way to treat a customer pfffft get a new job where you don't need to talk to ppl *****
(1)Nick S.
Fantastic sushi wish I could give 3.5 stars here but... To be honest this place was more than surprise. Driving along looking for a place to eat this was the first decent looking place that wasn't fast food. Of course not being familiar with the area, and sort of the middle of nowhere I didn't know what to expect. However despite being fairly small and small on staff the food delivers. Definitely the first thing I noticed was the size however most great sushi restaurants are smaller in size it is the larger ones that tend to falter in quality of food. While they could definitely use one or two more on the staff as when I was there was single waitress, one sushi chef and then the hot line chef in the back. Nevertheless even with the small space and low occupancy creating a bit of awkwardness so to speak, the sushi and other dishes delivered. Starting off with the gyoza appetizer. While the gyoza themselves were pretty good and the dipping sauce wasn't bad either they were plated on a bed of shredded cabbage. What's the problem you ask? Anything fried should never be placed on any green or covered as it will create steam therefore decreasing the crispiness of the items. Also trying the octopus salad. Which while the octopus was surprisingly tender and there was seaweed sesame salad which I've become obsessed with and overall it was rather delicious. Unfortunately there was so much dressing I mean this thing was drowning in dressing. As for actual sushi, I ordered the "Hot Night" roll which was tempura shrimp and cucumber on the inside, then topped with spicy tuna, scallion and tobiko. First of all this is one of my favorite combinations tempura shrimp and spicy tuna which I normally have to special order so to see it on the menu was great. However having the tuna on top I was skeptical because I prefer everything to be rolled within the sushi roil, less mess and more convenience, yet the spicy tuna was prepared in such a way that it was the right amount of spicy and texturallly right that it held to the roll along with the scallion and tobiko. I also sampled some salmon sashimi which may just be the best salmon I've ever had... so far. I do wish I could give an extra half star here but nevertheless like great thing in small packages so holds true to hidden gems and surprises if driving around or in the area Blue Fin has a great variety of sushi and other Japanese dishes.
(3)Holly E.
Super nice people! Amazing sushi! Owner is very nice and accommodating when we asked for more ginger. Lots of different rolls to choose from as well as a cooked menu. Try it out you won't be sorry.
(5)ParisAnne D.
We found this place by chance, luck, good Yelping.. One of those. We needed to stop for dinner on a Monday night at 6:30, not long after crossing the border heading home. Pulled off that exit at random and looked on Yelp for something close by. This place was about half full so we got seated immediately. The only thing in this place I was put off by was the dim lighting. The wait staff was friendly and just the right amount of attentive. Our order did not take too long and my husband and I both enjoyed our sushi (he raw, mine cooked). The tempera appetizer was a good size and wonderful.

This place was so disappointing that I felt compelled to write my first Yelp review to deter others from making the same mistake we did. Honestly, I think the other who gave this place over 3 stars have never had good sushi. We drove from Vancouver to Bellingham to shop and checked out Blue Fin Sushi while we were there since all the reviews raved about it. We arrived an hour after opening to a nearly empty restaurant only to be told by the sullen server that all their sashimi was sold out (toro, blue fin tuna, etc) except for salmon and tuna. How can a sushi restaurant not have enough sashimi when they just opened??? And plus, their name even has "blue fin" in it.. How do you not even have your namesake fish just an hour after opening?? We ordered some salmon sashimi along with the tuna combo. It was very very mediocre. I don't know how much I can emphasize the mediocrity of the food we had. It was like cheap crappy sushi anywhere, but at a higher price. The fish did not taste fresh, and the tuna was too cold (probably taken from the freezer shortly after we ordered). The service was lacking - the waitress clearly did not want to be there and did not crack a smile in the whole time we were there. The food wasn't cheap either: for the same quality, we would have paid much less in Vancouver (and our cost of living is pretty freaking high!). Overall, this was a HUGE disappointment. I would NOT recommend this place for anyone who has sushi regularly. Let this be a warning for anyone from a place with lots of sushi options - this might be "good" in terms of what Bellingham has to offer (as we originally thought from the other reviews here), but if you are a regular diner of sushi, this place is definitely not worth the trip given the price, crappy service, and the barely passable food.
(1)Lindsay H.
HAGGENS has better sushi than this place. The food doesn't taste all that good and they cram in the tables so you are forced to hear everyones' conversations around you.
(1)Kelly D.
Only sushi restaurant we have eaten at in Bellingham because experiences at others were so poor. Not a great sushi place but you take what you can get. Menu is limited and not very creative and service is slow. But not bad overall!!
(3)Leah S.
Sushi isn't cheap, but is delicious. The rolls are pretty decent sizes and the fish was great! I wish that this place was downtown, rather than by Sehome Village next door to a Pizza Hut. Otherwise, I had a great experience at Blue Fin. Lots of rolls to choose from and friendly service. We had multiple rolls and nigiri sushi, and liked everything we had. This is definitely the place to get sushi in Bellingham.
(4)Robby E.
I used to love Blue Fin until I had multiple disappointing experiences. I went to take my family to Blue Fin for lunch but when we asked if they had room for a table for 6 people the owner said no and walked away without saying anything else which we found incredibly rude. My girlfriend used to work here a few years ago who works incredibly hard and had never had a bad experience in the work place but they treated her incredibly poorly for not being Korean and fired her for being one minute late once after working there for months. I love sushi and liked this place but they pulled the last straw. Don't go here if you like good service and restaurants that treat their employees well.
(1)Lucylyn G.
I'm normally the pickiest, biotchiest person ever at a restaurant for a few reasons. Mainly because I was a server for YEARS, but also because if I go anywhere and spend any kind of money, I expect to be treated like my money's appreciated. When I leave a good tip, I leave a damn good tip, and I have no problem leaving little to nothing when people hardly do more than take an order. I usually leave a note too. With this visit, I left a note. The note said, "I just wanted to let you know that today was the best service I've received at anyplace where the bill was less than $50 in a very long time. i really appreciate it and I hope you keep this up." Then I tipped $30. The sushi was good, nothing super special that you can't get any almost any other place, but I liked it. I'm not one of those picky ass people who want all organic or some dumb ish. Organic fish? really? They had a really nice selection of rolls for a very decent price. I'm a little bummed they didn't have hand rolls on the menu, lobster (not joking), or maki/sashimi plates that didn't require the purchase of random rolls. Why do places always pair the good stuff with the bad rolls. California? Really? Horrible place, horrible roll - usually. Oh, and the green tea was really really good. I think they put toasted rice it it. Strange but good. Kind of nutty.
(5)GB R.
Yummy! Just finished eating my TO GO order. So, this review isn't for on premise service. We are from Vancouver, B.C. and there are many great sushi restaurants there. Blue Fin Sushi in Bellingham ranks right up there with the best of them. We will definitely be back! P.S. - I have read a few reviews about the service here. Well, for me, I had barely opened the door and a pleasant girl greeted me while I walked in and was very helpful. Great service so far.
(5)Amy C.
First time and we will definitely go back. The fish was so fresh and rolls were great. The place isn't big but people come and go and the place was full the entire time we were there. That tells us the place is a popular one. Oh and the food came out pretty quick.
(5)Darla B.
A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! We went in after hearing how good the sushi was. I noticed that my salmon smelled a little overly fishy. I pointed it out to the waitstaff, who just walked away without any response. The others said they didn't notice it, so we went ahead and finished. HUGE mistake. I was ill for the remainder of the evening! I called to let them know and they just said it wasn't them. Definitely not a restaurant that cares about quality or customer satisfaction. Steer clear!!
(1)Pam P.
We had a great experience here, thanks to the positive reviews. Friday night, 7pm, party of 3. The place was busy and it was obvious why. Excellent sushi and attentive staff. The servers worked as a team, no one was slacking off. It made our dinner more pleasant because of the friendly atmosphere.
(5)Kendall C.
Visiting family here in Washington and I am always skeptical about eating at new sushi restaurants and I am VERY IMPRESSED with Bluefin Sushi. I tend to be extremely picky when it comes to my sushi. The following rolls were amazing: Rosanna Bellingham Golden Bridge P-Tai Oahu Stripe Bass Hitachi Popper The following nigiri was amazing: Sockeye Salmon Bluefin Hamachi The service is excellent. Sushi is fresh. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. EXTREMELY pleased with this sushi restaurant overall.
(5)Sarah F.
Pretty good for Bellingham sushi. But I must say, a wee bit expensive. Pros? -Tasty combinations -Friendly service -Pleasant atmosphere for a date Cons? -Price -Often very busy
(3)Edward S.
Stopped here on our way through Washington. Very clean interior with efficient and friendly staff. I had the Bellingham roll and my wife had the Golden Cali roll and we also had the Yam roll. All came beautifully presented and were very tasty. The tempura within the rolls were crispy and well tempered. We really enjoyed our meal. Prices are consistent with a lot of other sushi joints we frequent. This place goes on our "short list" of excellent sushi bars.
(4)Joseph W.
This place has exceptional sushi and a great, clean atmosphere. We definitely appreciate a great variety of sushi options and enjoyed every roll we ordered. The only turnoff we had was with, what appeared to be the owner. He was belittling his staff in the kitchen and the waiteresses working in the restaurant. I realize there are expectations to running a restuarant, but felt that he could have pulled them aside to talk instead of doing it right in front of the customers. In his defense, we only visited once, but felt he could have handled things a little more professionally.
(3)Kellieann D.
Ate here for the first time tonight and I was pretty impressed. The sushi was fresh and there were so many different options. A little expensive but that's just the price you pay for good sushi!
(5)John O.
There is nothing amazing about this place. Its OK food and sub par fish. The service is nothing amazing and at times a little unprofessional.
(3)Sather F.
Consistently great sushi. Fresh. Attention to detail. My goto sushi joint in Bellingham.
(5)Claude B.
Great Sushi-Uncomfortable Furnishings We really enjoyed our first time at Blue Fin last night but couldn't help but notice the hard surfaces, especially the one we sat on. More comfortable chairs would be a plus but we'll go back anyway.
(4)Tami D.
This is my second visit to The Blue Fin, the first with my daughter and second with my husband, and I have to say that this is the best sushi in town. The sushimi is the freshest and of high quality. The nigiri is a perfect portion of rice to sushimi. Goyza is 8 pieces, wow. Great atmosphere. Make sure to sit at the bar if possible. (On a side note, I'd like to address the review written by L.S. who bashed this place and the owner but wasn't gutsy enough to use their name.....I have no connection to the owner but both visits I sat at the bar and deliberately watched and chatted a bit with him to see if he indeed was as rude as this review claims. Absolutely not. He was professional and courteous. Ensuring that on both visits we were happy with our food. If the individual that wrote this review is as cowardly to remain anonymous, I have to believe they were highly exaggerated and most likely rude themselves.)
(4)Jen A.
The food here was really good but the service... Not so much. We had a party of 6 and therefore gave a lot of business for sushi rolls. However, the waitress was fairly inattentive and service took a looooong time. We had to ask for extra plates for soy sauce when it was clear that we all ordered sushi rolls, These may seem like little things but did negatively affect our experience.
(2)Suzy T.
Steve, owner of Blue Fin Sushi and his lovely wife and staff are great. Steve will let you know what the top fresh picks of the day are, and with uni and monkfish liver on th menu (when available), they have won me over as a loyal customer.
(5)Todd A.
Blue Fin is my "go to" sushi place for lunch. Very quick in their preparation, the fish is delicious. The prices are fair and the portions are generous. Definitely try the Sushi Deluxe and the Crazy Monkey roll!
(4)Christianne Z.
We left after the waitress wouldn't let us seat three people at a four-top table, instead making us sit at the bar: "It's rush hour, and we might need these tables for other people." Oh, you mean like us, who just came in? Three of us. For a four-top table. It's not like one person for a ten-top. Customer service was bad right at the start. Move on.
(1)Alison G.
Didn't pay much attention to the decor here as I wasn't feeling very well on the day of my visit, My mood changed once the food came. I ordered the hwe dup bap (raw fish, vegetables + rice) for $12.95. The portion is generous and the fish extremely chilled and refreshing, I left not even a lick left! I think the reason why I haven't stopped by ever is because of the prices. They are higher than my wallet would prefer... thank goodness I've waited this long to visit. So if you're looking for good sushi in Bellingham, this is an option!
(4)Rick S.
Bottom Line - Probably one of the better places to get sushi in Bellingham; though the service was quite slow when I ate there. Prices were affordable, and the fish was fresh enough. I came for dinner on Monday, 27 February 2012 and ordered the following: Seaweed Salad ($4.95) - This was very normal... same quality as the seaweed salad they sell at Costco. Chirashi ($16.95) - This is something that is not on the menu, but I always order it at Japanese restaurants. The fish that came on top was fresh enough. Chirashi is supposed to have some veggies that come with it, but this one did not... it was more of a sashimi on top of sushi rice. I would have liked some pickled veggies and maybe some imitation crab/mayo in there. Hotate ($4.75) - Hotate is my favourite nigiri, and the hotate here is pretty fresh. Nice and sweet. I'd order this again. The bill came to $26.65 + 2.92 tax +5.53 tip = $34.50 for my table of one.
(3)Sandy R.
Oh my goodness I've been searching for a real sushi restaurant, this is it!! Had my first visit tonight, it was my daughters birthday and mmmmmm delicious isn't a good enough description. I'm definitely returning. Oh and the customer service is excellent, very kind and courteous .
(5)Nefeli B.
I kindly asked the owner if he knew anything about the products he used (i.e. if they were organic, fresh, local, non-GMO, etc.) Long story short.. he didn't know and then hung up on me. I've eaten here before and it is nothing special, but this came as a suprise that the owner had NO IDEA where or how his products were made. Kinda sketchy.

What a flip flop experience. Our first time visit was for a late lunch on Friday. At first, we were greeted by a very quite waitress who didn't say much and took a very long time to place our order. Not much of a greeting or interaction as well, from the owner/sushi chef, as he was immersed in his lap top on the customer side of the sushi counter. From our first impressions, we were not expecting much with the rest of our sushi experience... Boy were we WRONG... We ordered "Sushi & sashimi" and the "Salmon teriyaki bento box". The portions were huge... the fish was very fresh.... the salmon was tender and delicious... the creations were magnificent. The Ozeki Nigori Sake was smooth and refreshing. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised by the second half of our visit. The WWU students are so lucky to have such a good quality sushi restaurant so close to their campus. In spite of the first impression.... we will be back..
(3)Jennifer C.
My friend and I went here the other day based on the Yelp reviews. We loved it! We had Seaweed Salad and Soft Shell Crab for an appetizer, Spicy Tuna Handrolls, Yucatan Roll, Spider Roll and the Blue Fin Roll. Everything was great. The sevice was very good too. I can't wait to go back there. All of that food including a beer was on $65 too!!
(5)Giat T.
The food is under average and over price. It took over 30 mins to get the food. This is my 1st time and also the last time.
(1)Kristine P.
I love sushi. I could eat it every day. I would if I could. I've been to at least 2 other sushi places in Bellingham and this is BY FAR the best one. Mainly because its the only place Ive found that serves what Blue Fin Sushi calls the Summer Roll. It's a sushi roll that has had the rice replaced by cucumber, and its absolutely delicious. Another roll I always order is the Golden Bridge, which is a baked roll with scallops, cucumber and crab. I like this place WAY more than Wasabee because of the wide selection of rolls and the size of the rolls. I like this place WAY more than Kuru Kuru because the quality of the rolls and fish they serve. Of course, service is excellent. The wait staff is fast and friendly. The prices are reasonable. This is definitely my go-to place when I want sushi.
(4)Kathy M.
Yum. I love it here. I never leave disappointed, and Steve and his staff are wonderful. Fresh, delicious, consistent- all great qualities when you're looking for a sushi place. He has a few baked rolls on the menu which are all fantastic- my favorite is the Golden Bridge. For a sinfully delicious appetizer, I recommend the Monkey Brain. The four star review is because of the price- it's been increasingly expensive since I started going here but you get what you pay for, and Blue Fin is amazing.
(4)Rourke M.
Stopped in here for an early dinner tonight but walked out after the flustered and rude waitress asked us to change tables after we were already seated! We've been to Blue Fin many times in the past and up until now have put up with the inconsistent service but today was the last straw. We won't be back. Little Tokyo has better quality sushi -- the only reason we have put up with Blue Fin's inept service over the years is because they offer brown rice as an option.
(1)Julie H.
Blu Fin is our favorite place for quality sushi. Always a pleasant experience. Cooking is consistent. Service is wonderful. We have been eating here since it opened and have never had a bad experience. The sushi here is the best in town!
(5)Daranee N.
We had originally thought that this Blue Fin will be a buffet like the Northgate location but its not. A lil hesitate to walk in once we parked in front. Don't let the small place fool you. The food and service are excellent. Fresh ingredients and very friendly staff. My bf and I had an amazing meal with a nonchalant mood :)) Our server, Sam made the experience even more awesome. Arigatou Sam for taking care of us well. We'll definitely stop by again when we're in the area.
(5)Sherrie M.
A year ago I would have given this place four stars. Today, more like two. I am on a very strict food program right now which includes no rice or soy, which I explained to the waitress. I opted for a 10-piece sashimi plate worth 18 dollars. I asked to substitute a plain salad for the miso soup (soy) and asked for green tea. The waitress was snobby, the sashimi plate came with only three varieties of fish (which were very fresh, have to say that), the tea had toasted rice in it (what "I can't have rice" did she not understand?!?) and my bill came in at over $25! Everything was an extra! No tip and I am not eating there again.

I was on a sushi kick two weeks ago and after a quick search on Yelp, found this place. We came in around 5:30PM to an empty restaurant and we were motioned to sit wherever we want. Now, I don't know what got our server's panties in a bunch but the service we got made this dining experience very memorable and not in a good way. The attitude we got was almost comical. BH and I were half expecting a cameraman and host from Ellen to pop out and say they're doing a prank segment on how people react to pissy waitresses. I'm thinking it was the owner and his wife, with the owner being the sushi chef behind the counter. They were clearly looking for people as about four girls came in to drop off their resumes in the hour or so that we were there. Anyway, this woman just looked like she'd rather be doing her nails than serving anybody anything. Being a truely polite Canuck, my husband actually stood up to approach our server to ask for a spoon because we couldn't seem to catch her eye to come over. Funny serving bowls of miso soup without even asking if you'd like the option of spooning it into your mouth (as opposed to slurping it from the bowl). Anyway, she then motioned over the counter where BH can grab a spoon (after a paltry attempt to meet him halfway to hand him the spoon). I didn't realize we were at a cafeteria. The entire time we were playing a guessing game as to what's eating her, with BH asking me repeatedly "why is she mad at us?". The only time she began to perk up and make a futile attempt at conversation was...you guessed right. Bill paying time. In hindsight, I should have videotaped it with my Iphone just so everyone can visually understand what I mean. And having an Ellen camera come out would have made the experience so much better. Which is all tragic because our sushi rolls were fantastic in taste and portions. Truly good fusion rolls (Titanic and Las Vegas). Go for the specialty rolls and skip the bento boxes. BH got the orange chicken bento and it was bordering inedible. Deep fried chicken balls in a sickly sweet sauce.

Amazing! Great food, clean and beautifully blue environment. Great for dates. rolls are large and fill you up, I always have leftovers (or order extra so I can have leftovers)...overall great experience. Never lets me down.

So good! One of the best sushi places in bham.

Best sushi in Bellingham by a long shot. Everything always seems nice and fresh. Service lacks a little.

This is my baby brother and my favorite sushi spot. So tasty and nice people too!

Confused unfriendly staff that asked us to sit, then get up and wait, switch tables, get up again, then sit with no apology or explanation. Food was ok, not very impressed.

I would have given this place more stars had the service been better. It was downright AWFUL though. I went to Blue Fin with a friend for dinner only to wait 20 minutes for our order to be taken, then 15 minutes for our water and tea, then 45 minutes for our edaname, then 15 minutes for my dinner, then 5/10 minutes for my friends dinner. The waitress never came to refill our water, didn't apologize for forgetting the edaname after forgetting it, and I was angry. Unfortunately, I absolutely love the rolls that Blue Fin offers. They are tasty!! They are a bit on the pricy side but it's some of the best rolls I've ever had! Their food is very good and my younger brother claims that the orange chicken is the best he's ever had. The food gets 5 stars but due to the awful service that happened (and cost), the overall rating dropped to a 3.

Only the best sushi in Whatcom County, if not the whole PNW! We waited a long time to try them because being in a strip mall on Samish didn't seem a likely location for good sushi. But OH BABY!! they make wonderful sushi! The hamachi, sake and unagi nigiri are my favorites. The bento boxes are lovely too. Teriyaki, california roll, and gyoza, good portions, nice presentation and good price. Their specialty rolls are also done well...good flavor and texture contrasts. We haven't eaten in the restaurant yet, just take out, but no complaints whatsoever. I jones for their nigiri!

When this place first opened, I have to admit that I wasn't impressed. But when Miyoshi's closed, we came back - I'm so glad we did. The service has been quick, friendly and professional. The ambiance is nice - even a little romantic, and tonight, despite having a mostly full dining room, we were able to hear the music and each other. They're not cheap, I'll give you that, but what you get is well made and the menu is extensive. Don't forget to pay attention to the fresh fish board - we would have missed it had our server not pointed that out before we ordered. Luckily we ordered the fatty tuna from the specials board and it was downright amazing. Thank you, Blue Fin Sushi!

I thought Blue Fin was great for lunch, it was reasonably priced and the sushi is alright. The service lacked, but overall it was a good experience!

5 stars for the Best sushi in Bellingham. I've been to every single sushi place in Bellingham too. Compared against the Vancouver sushi scene, I'd probably give it a 3.5 to 4. The Malibu Roll is by far the best. Steve has an amazing talent of choosing only the freshest and best cuts of Atlantic & Sockeye salmon. There's a lot of attention to detail in all the food served here.

BLUE FUN SUSHI In one word: "UUhhhMazeING!!" Pretty simple review here....Absolutely delightful place that serves up some of the most incredible sushi anywhere around -- hands down!! Bento Boxes are cheap & so is the Sushi Happy Hour for $1 buck! Oh & Ya gotta try their cold UN-filtered sake... WOW!!

I need to point out I am writing this review from the point of view of someone with celiac disease. That means I can't eat anything with gluten (wheat/barley/rye) at all, or face some dire consequences. I have been going to Bluefin Sushi for about 6-8 months now. I have heard the rumors that they were not very good at one time, but a waitress told me they had changed ownership a while back. Perhaps that is why we had such a good experience. Eating out is always a bit nerve wracking if you have celiac disease. You just can't do it at all if the wait staff are not willing to answer questions about the food. At Bluefin, we always tell the wait staff (even new ones) about my issues. Every time I have gone, they listen, and take it very seriously. You have no idea how grateful I am for that. This last time I went, the gal that served us was quick, and took my order. I had to ask what was in the miso soup. The sushi chef answered, by listed all the ingredients for me, and helped me. Most miso soups are gluten free, but I want to make sure there is not soy sauce in it, just in case. After you find wheat flour in your ice cream's ingredients, you just ask about everything. My husband and I ordered quite a bit of sushi. Their Philadelphia rolls are made with salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber? Anyways, they don't use fake crab, which always has wheat in it. We ate ourselves silly, and it was all very good. I can't eat my sushi with soy sauce, so I can really tell if it's not up to snuff. This stuff was great. The mackerel was mouth watering. The tuna just melted in my mouth. The Philly rolls, had so much flavor! The service was also outstandingly quick. I didn't even have time to pull out my sketch book because the food was there so fast. I can't recommend them enough. The staff was great. I spent $32, and left them $40 to keep the rest in tips. (I know wait staff hate folks with food allergies, etc, so I tip like all get out, when they help me.) The prices are mid ranged, in my opinion. I would pay double that at a worse restaurant, just to get the staff to understand I can't have gluten. It was a great experience, and next time I drive up to Bellingham, from Seattle, I will be eating there.

Tonight was my second visit the Blue Fin. The sushi is as good as any I have had. Steve is personable and attentive to the clientele and the service was fast. I brought a friend from Denmark last week and he was quite impressed too. I'll be back. (;

Just had a fine sushi lunch at Blue Fin. I'm new in Bham and was nervous about my first sushi. I chose well. I've traveled quite a bit, including LA, SF, etc and eaten sushi everywhere I been. I am a nigiri guy. Rolls and all that are nice, but one cannot judge the quality of the fish with mayo and spicy sauce all over it. The freshness and quality of the fish at Blue Fin is good. Steve, the chef, and Sue his wife, are the owners. They were both very friendly and attentive. They have been in business four years and are obviously doing it properly. Also the selection was impressive. I had Ankimo, Saba (they make it there), Uni, Big Eye Tuna, Scallop (Hotate), Unagi and Hamachi. Yes, I ate too much, but it was excellent and I wanted to really check out the quality of the fish. The other amazing thing is that the nigiri was $4! $4?!?! For fresh fish?! I am accustomed to paying more like $6-$7. Anyone complaining about the price needs to just go to the all you can eat place... You get what you pay for...

LOVE the food and the service. BEST sushi in Bellingham, hands down.

First good sushi i have had in a long time. Went there after a long hike with me fiancé because we were craving sushi, and Bluefin really hit the spot. The sushi orders were huge and beautifully presented. We will definitely be going back again soon!

I am allegic to fish but my husband loves it so I normally hate when he wants to go to a sushi restaurant for lunch. NO MORE!!!! Not only was his meal fantastic mine was too! I look forward tot he next time he wants to go back as there was a large selaction even for me. The owner also assured me that I would enjoy my meal and I did. I love personalised service and the care they gave us. Thanks for a great meal. We will be back soon!

I know other people have complained about service, but I have been to Blue Fin quite often and never had a problem. I do usually sit at the sushi bar, so I am RIGHT THERE and maybe that makes the service better because I'm right in front of them, but no one I know who's been there have had a complaint. The sushi is fantastic! I'm sure it's very American to deep fry a sushi roll, but a deep fried Philly makes the cream cheese all gooey and awesome. And it's not like it's deep friend like french fries at a fast food joint. Just a quick flash to make it warm and yummy. The fish is always incredibly fresh and never has the day-old-fishy-smell to it. Steve, the owner and sushi maker, is incredibly friendly and sitting at the bar he will chat with you. When it's busy you won't get your food in 5 minutes. If you take a look at Steve, he is hustling making the sushi, but he is only one guy and it will take a few minutes when there's a lot of tables. His wife does help sometimes, but she's not quite as good as he is. Love it. Favorite sushi place. Happy hour is awesome.

I was very excited to find this place, since most of the sushi experiences we have had in Bellingham have not been all that great. This place was a nice surprise. We ordered a variety of rolls, the gyoza and chicken teriyaki and ail was all great. We really enjoyed our meal and will come back again. The only down side is that it was somewhat pricey, but I thought it was worth every penny. We got the food to go and the lady who took our order and helped us pay was very pleasant. Nice customer service! We'll be back.

Yummy sushi but the other plates like the teriyaki chicken were not so good. The service here is always very prompt and friendly. Also, the sushi is reasonably priced and always tastes fresh.

Loooots of sushi options. Lots of appetizers options. I had a hard time choosing. The edamame was a giant bowl, the miso soup was good, there were classic sushi options and Americanized ones. Great service. Recommend.
(4)Kimberly S.
Not like my sushi ya back home but a decent secondary. The fish tasted fresh and the rolls were pretty good. This was the highest rated sushi place in bellingham and it was worth while trying it out.

I guess I am kind of picky. My friends liked their sushi, but I was disappointed. Their selection of vegetarian sushi was very limited, and I looove any rolls that contain smoked salmon (or any cooked fish) - of which they had none. I got some Edamame and Tea. The Edamame, was alright, I've had much better, and the tea was, well, tea. The service was good, and the ambience was nice (there was only one other couple there, so it was very quiet) but the seats were really uncomfortable, and it was hard for me to share my edamame because there was so much other stuff on the table, even though I was only with 3 other people.
