From the road, it looks something like a big red barn. On the inside, it's not fancy. As several other reviewers here have mentioned, appearances can be deceptive. The food and service was exceptional. I wouldn't call the menu fancy, either, but everything was served quickly, piping hot, and delicious. The Barn Door meatloaf sandwich was somewhere between a meatloaf cheesesteak and a traditional meatloaf sandwich. Served between two slabs of Texas toast was a thick slice of meatloaf, grilled to perfection, smothered with sautéed peppers, onions, and for anyone without the good sense to avoid eating fungi, mushrooms, nestled securely under a double blanket of melted swiss cheese. Accompanied by crispy house chips, this was a fine sandwich. Almost too much for a meal, and clearly sized according to the barn door scale, this was a monster of a meatloaf sammich. If you're around Salem, or just passing through, do yourself a favor and eat some food that will let you know that you are at the top of the food chain. Attentive and prompt service, coupled with food that really satisfies makes Billy's Barn a can't miss.

Billy's was a total and pleasant surprise. From the outside not appealing at all. In fact we almost didn't go in. Inside decor is very dated. Half is a bar pool hall, and the other half a bar and dining area. From the moment we sat down, our dinner became a wonderful experience. Service was prompt, and friendly. We had one of the three specials. Sirloin steak, fried spinach (we'll go back just for this), sautéed mushrooms, and a dinner salad. Superb. With wine our bill came to $42.00 including the tip. Don't miss this place if you in the mood for great food, reasonable prices, and a friendly (albeit dated) atmosphere.

I went there for dinner after a 6 mile hike, so maybe my review is a little bias... but my food wowed me so much I wrote them a thank you note on the bill! I Ordered a smothered burger on a wheat bun with tabasco sauce on the side. I was honestly expecting the bun the be stale and the burger to be this little chewy patty, but was pleasantly surprised! Bun was fresh, toppings were amazing (and the tabasco complimented all the flavors), burger was large and not that crappy 80/20 beef. Yes it was pretty darn greasy, but it didn't hurt my stomach afterward. I was in love! The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my boyfriend was not so thrilled with his meatloaf sandwich. He said the toppings were cold and the meatloaf was dry (which apparently is a common thing in these parts).

How did I find out about this place so late in the game? I just made the connection that cheap beer is a great way to cool down after a long hike (ok, I don't recommend doing this from a medical standpoint). I've tried a few things here. This is the first time that I've encountered boneless wings done right i.e. without breading (the world according to Anson). Get the garlic sesame wings. Just do it. I also got a meatloaf sandwich and it was pretty good. My friend got a burger and was pretty satisfied with it. This is the kind of home cooking place I've been looking for. They serve thick potato chips here, not the kind out of the bag. A pitcher (60 ounces) of Fat Tire for about 12 bucks. Not bad. Service was excellent. I like the kind of place where the server/bartender is surly without being in your face. If this place had more tv's, I'd be here regularly for sporting events...seeing as how I am always disappointed with Buffalo Wild Wings with both food and atmosphere. I'm surprised that more people don't come here after hiking Dragon's Tooth and McAfee's Knob, seeing as how they are both just down the street.

Just passing through and gave it a try. The service was very friendly. Made us feel comfortable. The burgers were about the best we have ever had -- truly exceptional. Reasonable price. Would definitely be a "be back."

Very tasty and good portions. I had the Billy Q sandwich and it was delicious. Pulled pork topped with slaw, great authentic taste! My wife had the chili, also a great delicious chili with great flavored meat and beans. Our waitress was Krystal. She was attentive and very helpful. We will be back to the barn!

Looks are deceiving. .not pleasing to the eye but food is great and staff is superb. The cajun pasta is phenomenal.

We live out of town and always go to Billy's Barn when we are in the area. The food is always good, and the burgers are absolutely the best you will find in the Roanoke area. Service is good, everyone is friendly and eating there is always a good experience.

This place looks like, heck it is, a hillbilly dive, but I loved it. Great homemade chili, great sandwich(the 311) and a nice selection of local craft beers. You can also dance the calories off if you're so inclined. Don't miss this place.

Outstanding burgers!!! Traveled here with a large group, food was a little slow to come out but the staff was very friendly and helpful. Inexpensive...pork chips for $12? Very good and well worth it! Small town restaurant worth the trip!

Horribly slow service. Food was decent but took an hour and everyone else in restaurant were angry too.

Late dinner after a long day on the road . Recommended by clerk at hotel, who said had eaten there that very day. He said the owner cuts and grinds his own meat and everything always fresh. Reviews on YELP looked good so we gave it a try. I had the Barn Door, appropriately named, as this meatloaf sandwich was just about that size. Sautéed Green peppers and onions and a thick slice of cheese made it a meal to remember . Homemade chips were crisp and hot! Marty's bacon cheese burger was almost to big for her to get her mouth around and that's saying something! Perfectly cooked to order with plenty of fresh hot fries. Pleasant servers were attentive but not obtrusive . Prices good, place easy to find off I-81. GO HUNGRY!

I have been to this area many times before and had never discovered this place...I'm so glad I checked Yelp this time! Atmosphere: it's definitely barn themed from the outside! The front parking lot is pretty small, but there's parking off to the side and I assume some in back. It's half country bar and half restaurant, literally. I went to the restaurant side and seated myself (since the nice chalk board at the door let me know to do that). The restaurant side is decent sized and has a beautiful dark wood interior. There is a bar along one side, but it doesn't dominate the room. The music is definitely not too loud and it was very quiet in there (Sunday evening and only three diners including myself). Staff: the waitress was absolutely delightful and made me feel at home. Food: I ordered the sirloin steak, new potatoes, and ceasar salad. The salad was good, but not great. However, the steak and potatoes were really good! Steak was cooked to perfection and the potatoes were a pleasant surprise. NOTE: I could not detect any form of seasoning on either, which allowed me to salt the potatoes as needed and the steak was simply great as it was. There was some sort of green stuff on the plate that tasted great. When I inquired, found out it was fried spinach...now I have to figure out how to do that! I definitely like this place and will return with the next visit to the area!

The best part of this visit was the music. They were playing 80's - 90's in the dining room...cool! The burgers were OK. Not bad but not special either. The homemade chips would have been better if they had been hot and served with a garlic aioli or spiced up ketchup. All in all it was not a bad experience but it wasn't a do-over either. I will say though, the staff was very friendly and conscientious.

We had the Sirloin and the Ribeye. Both were fabulous. The salads were huge and both Ranch and Caesar dressings were perfect. If you are in the area do not miss this place. Service was great. We'd be regulars if we lived closer.

Stopped there late (9:30 PM) on a Saturday night while traveling with my wife and two kids. My wife had the pork tenderloin, my son had the bacon-wrapped sirloin, my daughter had the 311 sandwich, and I had the Biily-Q BBQ sandwich. Everyone was very friendly, the live music was lively, and the food was great! I highly recommend it.
