You walk in and love this place. It feels like your local sandwich and breakfast shop. Like you come here every Sunday for your go-to breakfast favorites. You know what I mean? The menu is almost too full of options. I had the FGBLT (fried green tomato blt) with sweet potato fries. It was a fun twist on a blt. My bacon was creepy, rue nicely toasted, lightly mayoed, and how I love a good fried green tomato. The club my mom ordered was good, but clubs are always a safe bet - I guess until you have your first floppy bacon. That's a dream crusher. About the location - it's big, really big. There is an exposed kitchen with some diner style sitting so you can sit in front of it. The rest are wood high backed cozy benches and some local art to observe. Breakfast is also served all day! You'll grow old trying to order everything on their menu, but start trying.

Breakfast and lunch place. I guess you can call this a home-town kinda place. All the locals adore it and it does serve middle of the road stuff but this is definitely not a five star place. Service is excruciatingly slow. Because of that, the wait is long...can't turn those tables when you can't serve the first comers... While the selection is decent, nothing really blows you away taste wise. This is more an exercise in refueling. The interior is kjnd of quirky cool. Large and ineresting ceiling fans churn the hot air while you wait for coffee...and wait for coffee... The servers are definitely pleasant and helpful but if you sit at the counter, you can watch the kitchen in action and it is a mongolian cluster-f$#k there which explains the wait on the floor. Coffee is hot and decent but hard to get them to refill you... and I drink a lot of coffee. All in all decent cost and middle of the road food. Give it a shot, it may work for you.

Had breakfast here the other day. Nothing fancy about the place, but it has a home-y feel to it. Service was very prompt and she answered all the questions I had, since I hadn't been here before. I ordered the Apple Cinnamon French Toast and it was very tasty! Great place, I would definitely return. :)

I was in Lynchburg for a yoga training. I ate here 3 times. Two breakfasts and a dinner. Each meal was perfect--sweet potato pancakes, fried green tomatoes twice, chicken Caesar that had a gentle dressing and freshly roasted chicken--not airport chicken. Wine is cheap ( and decent) and filled glass to the brim. I am walkin' outta here one content yogi. Ps. They brought me a roll of tape to fix my glasses!

Breakfast all day? Yes please! We stopped in for lunch while visiting the Lynchburg area. It's great historical building. The menu is extensive. My 2 cons that knocked it down from a 4 star are the noise level. Noise travels in there and with the large tables it was hard to hear my family. Second, was the sweet potato pancakes. They were good but it was a signature dish so I was hoping it would "wow" me. I would definitely go again if I'm in the area.

You can read other reviews or look at pictures for information about the decor of this place. There's plenty of descriptive examples. What we need to discuss is how mediocre this place is. Out of the well of times I've been to this place only a drop has been worth my money. Why do I keep coming then? Location. People keep insisting I meet them for breakfast/brunch/lunch here because it's in a convenient spot in a downtown atmosphere that doesn't offer an abundance of dining options. Last time I was here, I had the BLT with pimento cheese. I wrote a tip begging people to try it. I raved about it to friends. The fear of being disappointed by this place gone now that I had found my dish. Sadly, consistency is not a trait this place holds dear. The sandwich, yeah, let's talk about it. Awful. Initially I sent it back because there was barely any pimento cheese on it. Remember, I've had this sandwich before. I know it's potential and what I was served was a sad excuse of a faux grilled cheese. You can see the cooks and wait staff interact in this restaurant so when they complain to each other, guess what, the customer sees it. Classy. Really. When the sandwich came back I ate half of it and couldn't stomach the rest. The Farmbasket in Lynchburg serves a pimento cheese sandwich, which I've had multiple times, and never has it failed to be satisfactory. You know why? Because a pimento cheese sandwich is a really hard thing to mess up. Yet, somehow, this place succeeded at this failure. I agree with other Yelpers. This place is a bland house of food just hiding behind pretty decor.

Went with the crab cake sandwich that was ok here. The bread was pretty chalky and not very soft with the sweet potato fries being cold. Maybe I just caught a bad cook this day so I would possibly give them another shot since its jam packed and everyone seems to like it. Service was good and the prices were very cheap. I have my eyes on the fried green tomatoes and wings if I make it back again.

Visiting from Utah and was told that I had to have the expanded it at this place I did and they were wonderful! Had the eggs Benedict combination of the Chesapeake and Regina; so my eggs Benedict had a slice of fried green tomato and a crab cake. Absolutely awesome! The corn cakes are extremely good too. Prices are awesome and staff was great.

A friend visiting from Winchester wanted to take me out for breakfast yesterday before he left - he suggested 'Waffle House or something like that ' I suggested MoM (hadn't been for a long time) and we were both really impressed and satisfied! Friday morning at 9:30am it was moderately busy but not crowded...just enough business to feel fun & active. Got seated right away and had the nicest server...very sweet, friendly & capable (Cynthia)!! My buddy had eggs, ham, potatoes, toast with a side of cheese grits (which btw are the best I've ever had in a restaurant) plus a couple sweet potato pancakes (at Cynthia's recommendation). Sweet potato pancakes rocked!!! We both loved them! I got the Pig in the Garden (BLT with pimento cheese) also with a side of cheese grits...yum!!!!! We were both super happy with everything - delicious and we were treated so nicely. It was great! The BLT could use a bit more pimento cheese on it if you ask me, but it was still really really good! When we asked for the check she also brought us more of our respective beverages in 'to go' cups! I think my friend will be coming back to visit me and Lynchburg now!! Highly recommend!

Great experience here today for lunch. Prompt service, terrific history to the building, seating was comfortable even at the counter, and menu extensive. Food was served quite hot and servers were attentive to needs. Love supporting a local business :-)

Market at Main is the "go-to" place for locals on weekend mornings. Their eggs benedict and sweet potato pancakes are my (and my family's) top picks. They serve coffee in local, mismatched mugs and it's hard not to feel at home. If you're looking for a sophisticated DC-style brunch, you won't find it here; Market at Main's strength is it's homey feel with excellent Southern breakfast food.

A group of friends and I came to have breakfast at Market at Main after a recommendation from one of my roommates. It was the first time for all of us. Overall, we were pretty okay with our breakfast, but coming from San Diego (where breakfast is out of this world), I really think Market at Main could use a little more creativity. Although I was a little disappointed with the menu, I was delighted to see that they had at least one interesting item - sweet potato pancakes. My friend called dibs, so I chose something else, but I really should have ordered the same thing (what a mistake!). The pancakes were perfect!!

Friday night dinner at Market At Main. Our server Steve was wonderful. He made it very fun and comfortable. The food was very tasty. I had the Smith Mountain fish and chips and my girlfriend had the shrimp. Only reason they don't get 5 stars is that they were out of mashed potatoes :( We highly recommend it for casual dining, fun and laughs. Thanks Steve!!!

I love market on Main. I was introduced to MAM as a breakfast spot after Boy Scout sleepover is it amazement Square. They have a fantastic breakfast selection great omelettes and the best sweet potato pancakes I've ever had. The hamburgers are a bit small and 5 ounces. And because you're so busy there often a bit slow so give yourself some time. But it's well worth the wait. I definitely recommend coming here.

Ate here for lunch and maybe that was the problem, I see alot of the positive reviews here are on the breakfast foods. I ordered a cavalier burger which was mediocre at best, absolutely nothing special to brag about. Then I made the mistake of getting the fries instead of the chips. The fries here are the crinkle cut fries you get in the freezer section that no matter what you do to them always come out tasting bland and stale. My husbands pop was also extremely flat and when he asked for a new flavor it was flat as well. Definitely won't be back for lunch. Might try breakfast if I'm feeling adventerous.

Delicious from start to finish. The Market at Main offers an old-school atmosphere since the restaurant is located in an old-time drugstore from the 30s - 40s. The food is tasty and compliments the décor. The food is plentiful so prepare to bring home at least half your order. Enjoy a crème soda or frosty root beer for a taste of nostalgia. You will leave satisfied.

3.5 stars. I still enjoyed this place for a casual dinner in town with its no frills atmosphere and staple dinner selection. I like how you can watch the kitchen help prepare your food in this revived building. Service was a tad slow at times but everyone in the place seemed to enjoy themselves despite the fact that it can get loud due to the vaulted ceiling echoing what noise came from neighboring tables. I ordered the salmon and Mac, which was decent - I think they purposely make the food somewhat bland so you can season to your tastes. May stop by again for a quick bite.

I really enjoy this place! Now, keep in mind I'm very much okay with criticizing places, but I have nothing bad to say about it. I love coming here for any meal during the day or night (especially breakfast). Honestly everything I have had here has been pretty good, and at a good price! I like the well-lit atmosphere; even the loud cooks barking out orders. It never seems to fail: a welcoming, friendly place, for all ages and occasions. Here's my tip: avoid Sunday brunch if you can, or get there before church gets out; there are just too many people for the 'church crowd'.

I usually come here with my parents when I'm in town visiting and I've never been very impressed. I always get breakfast - usually scrambled eggs, bacon, etc. - not that hard to mess us, right? The grilled biscuit that comes with it is good, that's about it. The scrambled eggs are always soft and runny (I prefer them hard scrambled), the bacon is never crispy, and the potatoes often aren't even cooked enough to try and eat. Last time we went the bacon and potatoes were so under cooked I had to send them back, which I rarely do (I get embarrassed for whatever reason if I have to send something back). I know that I should have learned my lesson by now and order something different, but I keep hoping it will improve! I'm still giving them three stars since my parents always love their meals and I love the atmosphere and decor.

This place was clutch at the tail end of a long 15 hour drive South from Boston. We stopped in, bleary-eyed, starving, half zombie, half ravenous grizzly bears. The restaurant is quite large and we helped ourselves to two seats at the bar. Our waitress was very friendly and provided honest opinions about the food. She persuaded me not to order the vegetarian omelette, which is made with a homemade veggie burger. Instead, she directed me to the made to order veggie omelette filled with spinach, tomatoes, roasted peppers and mushrooms. She also suggested we split a short stack of the corn and the sweet potato pancakes(1ea). The pancakes were delicious, and highly recommended if you only get one thing. Service was attentive and with a smile. We felt like we were locals from the moment she called me, "Sweetie." The potato home fries were well cooked and seasoned, and the biscuits came with a nice dish of whipped butter, with Sriacha and Tabasco at my reach, this place is not messing around.

Love this place! Great service, no waiting. I had a business lunch here. They seated us away from other guests and were quick to bring our meal. Salads are incredibly good, as is the chicken salad. Get the large, because you will eat it all.

Market on Main is a great stop for a homey breakfast. I had the chance to eat here once before and loved it. This review is for 5/24 only. I ordered the vegetable omelet with a side of grits (and it comes with a biscuit - yum). I ate a few bites of my omelet and thought it was pretty tasty - I liked the addition of their housemade veggie burger. I went to take the next bite and hear "plop" as a big blob of raw egg falls out of the omelet. Moved some things around... And another two plops of raw egg are now on my plate. I brought this to my server's attention when he finally came to check on us and was told that it was a problem earlier in the morning... He thought that the pan was too hot. Well - an omelet that is "done" on the outside but raw in the middle WOULD mean the pan is too hot. To his credit, the server offed me a new omelet but I had lost my taste for eggs - for a while, but nothing was done to compensate us on our bill. The manager never came to the table to acknowledge the snafu or apologize... We still had to pay full price. Never a good thing to walk away from a restaurant still hungry and angry too.

This place was great when it first opened, but it has clearly gone downhill. We've been 3 times in the last 6 months, and each time there was something on our plates so wrong or disgusting, we've had to send it back. Uncooked and over-seasoned potatoes at breakfast, eggs Benedict with completely solid yolks, cold food, etc. Really wish they would return to their former glory because it's such a cool space.

I think this place has little to no creativity. It's like going to a school cafeteria. Everything is bland and just tastes like Sysco cooked. Disappointed that so many people love this place, I never go.

I ate here a few days in a row because it was close to my hotel, and serves breakfast. It also has a good-sized and interesting menu, with a number of twists beside their breakfast standards. I was not impressed with the food; for all the talk of the sweet potato pancakes, I barely detected the sweet potato, and didn't find them to be very exciting in any case. I also ordered the eggs benedict, which is usually can't-miss, but the english muffin was cold or stale or something, the hollandaise was bland, and if I'm nitpicking, the eggs were just a little overcooked. However! The service was excellent and very friendly, which is appreciated early in the morning. The food was timely, but admittedly it wasn't very busy any time I went. I did like the home fries, and certainly have no complaints about the pricing. I also liked having the option of getting some things at the "market" on the way out. Honestly though, I can't recommend it, and I doubt I'll be back again. Maybe it's better for lunch or dinner, maybe it just had an off week, I don't know.

First off I have to say that I am a huge fan of any place that serves breakfast all day, so this place is a win for me. The smothered biscuit was delicious and the white rock panini with cheddar cheese was out of this world. Service was quick and the server was really friendly. The establishment is very clean and welcoming.

Holy cow. Ssssssllllllloooooowwwwwe service. Our order of extra crispy fries came out limp. Our mozzarella sticks came out cold. One of our drinks revealed a sugar wrapper (paper) when the drink was 1/2 way gone....over-medium eggs were over easy. They did re-do the mozzarella and the fries and they tasted good. They also did replace my friends old fashioned Coke in the bottle and glass without paper... This is my 3rd time here in the last few months since I moved downtown and will most likely be my last. Wow.

Stellar breakfast and lunch joint. Full bar. Local beers on draught. Quick and friendly service. Wolf Friendly. I had the LC Hornet Burger which consists of a highly falvourful seasoned hamburger patty, akin to a well made Italian Style Meatloaf, and a homemade crab cake with ZERO filler. Pure lump crab meat, peppers and spices. Atop the patty is a light homemade Hollandaise sauce. The bread is toasted and appears to be from a local bakery. This is an awesome burger which I'd recommend to anyone. We also shared the Fried Green Tomatoes. Crispy. Juicy and full of flavour. The remoulade was made with a great whole grain mustard. Nice bite too.

I've eaten here quite a few times. I really like the atmosphere and the convenient store. A lot of the food just tastes plain. The people are pretty nice and the service is good. But other than that, I'm not impressed.

The decor and overall feel of the place was cool. It reminds me of a "hipsterized" establishment yiu would find in many parts of BK NY. From the outside it looks like a simple store, but once you step inside it's pretty massive. The options seemed decent on the menu. We love it when we find Fried Green Tomatoes as an appetizer and always order it, however it was a disappointment here. It was somewhat crispy on the edges but the center was just mush. He ordered the fried chicken with cornbread and mac and cheese. The chicken pieces were small in size but flavorful. The sides he wasn't a fan of. I ordered the blackened salmon with collards and squash casserole. It started off well.....until I found a piece of hair on my plate. It wasn't touching the food but the damage was done where I didn't want to eat anymore. Fortunately the waitress took it off the bill. overall I would say that this place has potential but I don't think I'll be back.

When you first arrive at Market At Main, you face a nicely restored building with a large eating area that has a tin ceiling and sepia-toned photographs of days gone by. The staff is friendly, the environs are pleasant, and my expectations were raised for tasting some good southern cooking. Unfortunately, I ordered the fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, steamed broccoli, and a brownie for dessert. One should note that I don't usually complain. However, aside from the pleasant crunch that one experienced when biting into the fried chicken, it was very close to being tasteless. There was no spice, there didn't appear to be any typical flouring of the chicken, and the overall experience was poor. The macaroni & cheese wasn't any better. I actually asked the waitress how good this item was and she praised it wholeheartedly. Perhaps they used American cheese or Cheese-Wiz in the recipe, because there wasn't any taste that I could detect...just some bland cheese sauce on over-cooked elbow macaroni. The steamed broccoli was fine, with the best attribute being that they didn't overcook the broccoli at all. It's a simple dish, so messing that up would have been difficult. Lastly, even the brownie was bland, which was strike three in my book. I don't think I will be returning to Market At Main anytime soon, unless it's to sample their extensive collection of local beers.

Went for restaurant week. Bland, uninspired food. Worst french fries in the city. Dry cake. Fried green tomatoes were nothing but batter. The Reuben was not as described on the menu. Presentation was terrible. Service was bad. I can't even begin to express my disappointment. Oh yeah and NO air conditioning. No apology from our server...no offer to comp a drink. Nothing. We had a large group and we all left unhappy. Big mistake to go here. Big. Big mistake.

2 eggs any way with the cheese grits. THESE ARE REAL GRITS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would've took a pic, but ate them that quick. Lol... Empty cheese grits bowl. For experienced pallets only. This spot is a great touch to the downtown Lynchburg river basin. I wished this was available when I was growing up. But good things comes to those that wait. The corn cake pancakes are great, and paired with the sausage gives you that sweet and savory combination on a spin on traditional breakfast. The mimosa was just perfect, meaning the champagne didn't over power the orange juice. The service is more of a very laid back style, where you can read the paper, and the staff doesn't keep hounding you. I had 2 phone meetings while there, and Christina kept refreshing my coffee without interruption ( MAJOR PLUS). NEEDLESS to say, everyone seemed very friendly, and I'm so glad that now when I come home to visit, I have somewhere to hold meetings in a wonder atmosphere with great food.

Service good. Atmosphere is wonderful. Wide open. Fun place to eat. Food is really good! The only negative would be some of the food was cold. Very affordable.

My experience here was just okay. Nothing that great. My breakfast sandwich was first served cold. Sent it back. The waitress came back and informed me that they had decided in the kitchen to make me another. The entire time service was very slow but the waitress did keep our waters full. The wife had a salad that was served with lots of red onion which was not mentioned in the menu. The price was nice but we won't be going back due to the mistakes, service, and mediocre (at best) food.

Loved it! What a treat to find a locally-owned gem hidden in Lynchburg! I grew up near Lynchburg and had more or less resigned myself to big box chain restaurants when visiting home, but I was so happy to discover Market At Main on Yelp :-) The hand-made veggie burger was tasty, as were the french fries. My friend had the house-made potato chips, and he really enjoyed them. He also loved his BBQ sandwich. The decor is cozy, the service was super super friendly, and the food was great. Can't ask for more! I'll be back next time I'm in town!

Eggs Rebecca was outstanding! Poached eggs perched upon fried green tomatoes all sitting on an English muffin. Yum!! Cheese grits are real grits- not that instant slimy stuff. Sausage patty's have a good flavor to finish the ensemble. The staff is caring and enjoyable to watch from the bar. The chefs take great pride in their trade and make sure your order arrives hot. A nice southern throwback experience with succulent food.

Great breakfast spot! It was crowded but large, so we didn't have to wait. Belly-up to the bar with some sweet potato pancakes made for a great start to the day. Food was great and fairly priced. The service wasn't bad either.

  • Jamie C.

I may have given it an extra 'star' because I like the atmosphere. Very unique for Lynchburg. I've been a handful of times, mostly for Sunday brunch. Bloody Mary's are very good. Their poached eggs can be hit and miss, especially if they are busy. The sweet potato pancakes were very good.

Have only eaten here at lunch - return time and again. Sometimes service seems slow, but if you're not in a big hurry, it's not an issue. Menu is varied and you can get breakfast any time of day - definitely a plus! This is a local business with a history that one feels compelled to support, and the owner (very hands-on) and staff make it a no-brainer to comply. Definitely give it a try.

Another cute place on downtown Lynchburg's Main Street. All wooden interior with wooden tables and chairs in the dining area, a bar to the right, and a little area where you can purchase random foodstuffs and apparel. Wasn't here that long and was by myself. Got an egg salad sandwich and a side salad. Tasty, but possibly a bit more mayo-y then I needed for a fresh lunch. The house made chips were incredible though! Woohoo!

My family and I went to dinner at Market at Main for the first time, and went away regretting the trip. I had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese, which was absolutely horrendous. The mashed potatoes were of the instant variety, the macaroni and cheese was of the reheated variety, and the fried chicken was cold in the center. It was rather disgusting, and unacceptable for a food establishment. My wife had a sandwich, called the "natural bridge zoo", which consists of bacon, roast beef, red onion, amongst other things. It was overloaded with some kind of mayonnaise concoction, it was immeasurably greasy, and the bread was soggy. On top of these faults, the lettuce on the sandwich was old, and not fit to be served to a patron (it had brown and soggy spots on it). This was a disgusting, thrown together, travesty of a sandwich. Additionally, my wife threw up after she got done eating only a small section of it. My daughter had pancakes, which she enjoyed; although they were, much like the sandwich, extremely greasy. Finally, while there, the cooks at this establishment appeared to be covered in sweat, and I witnessed them wipe their faces with their hands, while wearing gloves, multiple time. Our waitress was quite pleasant, punctual, and good at her job, which was quite contrary to the food we experienced. So, in addition to not producing food that is edible, and the cooks being unsanitary, the establishment is extremely overpriced for the quality of food they produce (granted, the price should be zero, because the food is essentially refuse). I would not recommend this place to anyone, ever. If you black out, experience a fugue state, and regain consciousness in this location, immediately purge your stomach, leave, and hope that you do not become ill.

Idk what it is about this place, but every time I walk in, I'm just immediately way happier. Maybe it's the atmosphere, maybe it's the awesome waitstaff or maybe it's because I know sweet potato pancakes are about to happen... Not sure but I love it.

My son and I accompanied my husband to a business trip to Lynchburg and our hotel was a few blocks from this restaurant. It was a nice place for my son and I to walk to for lunch, they have take out as well. On my first trip I ordered the chicken salad recommend by the waiter. The chicken was dry, there are few things I hate more than dry chicken salad. I don't remember what I ordered on my second trip. It's a cute place in a cute/hip stretch of downtown Lynchburg. I never had anything that "wowed" me, but it's a solid place.

I enjoyed the laid-back casual atmosphere and we received great service. We sat at the bar. It was a little loud but interesting to watch everyone work so the noise wasn't a problem. There was a nice menu with a few vegetarian options. I had fried green tomatoes with an amazing sauce (which I saved for my entree) and a veggie wrap. The wrap wasn't anything spectacular but it was good. There are other things on the menu that I'd like to try and will probably stop back the next time we are in Lynchburg. My favorite thing about this place was the atmosphere. Everyone working was friendly and seemed to want to be there. Some of the menu items had funny names. The decor looked as though it had been untouched for several decades and had a great feel to it.

In my opinion best restaurant in Lynchburg! Go for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but I personally enjoy going the most during brunch. I always get the Miller-Claytor burger, which is a fried green tomato burger with this sauce that is unreal Also, their sweet potato fries are unreal! All of the other burgers are amazing and seriously melt in your mouth. I have a friend that religiously gets the Black and Bleu burger every time we go there. The service is awesome, super friendly atmosphere, especially in the morning/middle of the day. It's a great family atmosphere and make sure to get there earl enough on the weekends because if you are going for brunch, it gets packed!

Love this place. Has sort of a diner-y feel, but the menu offers lots of surprisingly current/contemporary types of dishes!! Probably anything you order will be delicious. I love their gourmet hot dog (comes on a yummy hot dog bun, too-not just a run-of-the mill picnic style bun), their fried green tomatoes are outstanding, and the omelettes are amazing. Great service, very personable and accommodating. GO!!

We went on a Sunday at about 10: 45 am, we picked this particular restaurant because we like to support small businesses. We thought that we were in a good place, because the menu has a wide variety of offerings and because the place was packed. We waited almost 35 minutes for a table. We shortly realized that there were only two waitresses and they were overworked. (There seemed to be at least 50 to 60 diners in various stages of eating in the main dinning room.) We were very disappointed in our dining experience. It was like something out of an alternative reality movie. All of the local, hip and conservative Lynchburgians seemed to think that they were in a high dollar, trendy establishment. (But we think that they just don't know any different.) The portions of food were small and everything came to the table cold. The potatoes were undercooked and the flatware was dirty. I am not sure why other people think that this place is so great. We could have gotten better food, more attentive service at a popular breakfast chain down the road. We did tell the cashier that all of our food was cold and to their credit they to 50% off of the bill.

Pretty good breakfast. I had the fried green tomato blt. Good taste. Ordered the red potatoes as a side. Coffee was fine.

Let me say up front that I'm giving this 3 stars because my waitress and the cashier were very nice, and because the 'vibe' of the place was laid back and there seemed to be several 'regulars' having breakfast. That said, my breakfast? Oy. I ordered sweet potato pancakes with bacon. I made sure to tell the waitress that I wanted my bacon crisp. My bacon was, for lack of a better word, rather flaccid, for the most part. About 30% of it was almost crisp, so I ate those bits. The pancakes had a nice flavor, but I puzzled over why they seemed 'creamy.' Was it a function of the sweet potato in the batter? Uh...nope. It was because all three pancakes were raw in the middle. I know. Why didn't I send it back, is probably what you're wondering. I thought about it. But in truth, I was in a hurry, and besides, breakfast portions are always way too big most of the time. So I ate around the edges of the pancakes, where they were cooked, and that was plenty of pancake for me. So -- not the most stellar first impression, foodwise, but I'd give them another shot.

Cool place to eat. I love the look of the place. Food is up-scale cafeteria food. A little bit country, but not too greasy. Vegetables are out of a can, and the meat is flash fried on a griddle. The kitchen is super clean and you can watch them cook your food if you are paranoid like that. You MUST have a warm cookie before leaving.

I'm in from out of town visiting my sister. Sweet potato pancakes are delicious! Also loved the red skin potatoes. Great atmosphere, great service. Open kitchen with an old fashion style bar area is very cool. Definitely recommend.

This is a fabulous restaurant and I would recommend it to anyone :) Get the sweet potato pancakes or any poached egg dish for a win!

I gave it two stars simply because I save one star for the absolute worst. I gave this place a second chance but both times were a poor experience. The owner doesn't know how to run a restaurant well and the cooks don't know how to cook well. It's a poor combination. The first time the service was awful. It took almost an hour from the time we sat down to get our food. This time my fried eggs were so undercooked I had to send them back and my wife's poached eggs were cooked through and dry. If you can't cook an egg you shouldn't be a line cook. Not to mention we were told our party of 3 would have to wait 25 mins. to be seated when there was a 3 top open the whole time. I told the host (who I think might be the owner) and told him we would just sit there. So not only can't they cook or serve; they can't even seat properly. It's unfortunate that it's one of the few places downtown to eat.

Ordered the cavalier burger at the recommendation of our server & honestly one of the best burgers I've ever had. Cooked perfectly, smothered in cheese and bacon on a great bun. Chose a side of homemade chips, to die for. Homemade carrot cake for dessert that is beyond words! The best ever! Very accommodating staff & great atmosphere. We will return!

My latest baseball pursuits brought me to Lynchburg for a very brief time, and as is the case with my travels, I demand to eat at least one unique meal in every place I visit. That being said, I relied upon my fellow Yelpers to lead me to MaM, completely in the dark. On a Sunday morning, it was easy to get to, although I could easily see how during a lunch-rush or a post-church rush that this place could become problematic, but for my experience, I'm fortunate that I narrowly beat a post-church rush by ten minutes by arriving when I did. Being solo, I took a seat at the bar promptly, but it took an surreptitiously long time for anyone to take my drink order, let alone food order. But I tolerated it, because I'd never been before, and was more or less sitting there, soaking in the environment. I like the open-airy feeling of the establishment as a whole, and that they don't cram a third more seating, despite the fact that they could probably swing it. I ordered a Cuban sandwich, because I love Cuban sandwiches. What arrived I wouldn't really call a Cubano at all, but don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad at all, regardless. If there was any mustard on it, I didn't taste it, and a pickle was served on the side as opposed to in the sandwich. The pork was chopped not sliced, and the cheese was a little on the paltry side. It could be called something entirely, and I wouldn't guess it to be a Cubano; it tasted good, and I was satisfied regardless. I really wish there were half stars to rate, because I'd give MaM a 3.5. But I think back to the experience and realize that the service was a little on the slow side despite beating any rush times, and overall, they treat those who appear to be name-known regulars great, but to an unfamiliar like me, a little brusque, and wishing I were part of the cool kids club, so I'm rounding down.

This is definitely a staple restaurant for me in Lynchburg. I've never been disappointed by the service, food, or dining experience once! They may have "bad nights", I'm sure, but it hasn't happened to me yet. I'll continue to be a regular patron!

The food is not all that unique but the place is a fascinating recreation of the stores of the 1930's in Lynchburg. The floors were taken from an old tobacco warehouse and the rest of the decor, including the very long "lunch counter" resembles the Woolworth's that occupied the building in the 20's. The food is the usual southern fare but they do have hummus- that was interesting. We had breakfast there on a Saturday morning and the place was full but not crowded. Good service, given the crowd and I enjoyed my "Downtown Omelet" of bacon onion and cheese. We'll go back for dinner, which is served Wednesday thru Saturday. It looked like the place attracts a rather bohemian crowd, which is refreshing for Lynchburg.

We were in the area visiting a family member for the weekend. We found this place on Yelp and I'm sorry that we never ate here in the past. Im a major foodie and I love a good breakfast. I had the sweet potato pancakes and they were awesome, the breakfast sausage is quite tasty.. I didn't care for the grits, even though they had cheese in them they were very bland. The fried green tomato stack was delicious. My dining companions had the plain pancakes, and the bacon & cheese omelets both were delicious. the sweet tea is ok, but the OJ and apple juice were not good we sent them back.

Our new favorite non-expensive restaurant in town! Huge, open air atmosphere in an old factory building. The menu was interesting with lots of options. They serve breakfast until 3 pm, which I'm a huge fan of! The food was great, service is good, they have good local beer and wine selections. They also have good specials for students, etc. I think I remember a Tuesday night $30 dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine - you can't beat that! This is going to be our go-to place for an affordable, casual Southern dinner :)

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon to find a dearth of anything in downtown, let alone eateries. Upon entering, you sense that it was once a Woolworth's or something of that nature. It had been renovated, but still retained elements of its original charm, including what appeared to be a tin ceiling. The waitress was prompt and coordial. For food, I had the El Cubano, my wife a beef sandwich and my son just fries. While the Cubano was reasonably tasty, the bread (paini) was somewhat soggy and was largely barren of meat. As a side, I had sweet potato fries. They were not outstanding, but not bad. My wife's sandwich was equally mixed as well. With the exception that it lagely was without taste, period. Given the price we paid for the food and sodas, one would have expected more, but it did meet the immediate need.

Had a great sandwich here and liked the place so much I decided to come back for breakfast the next morning. Eggs Chesapeake were very good and the kitchen seemed to run like a well oiled machine. Everyone here was so nice and polite it seemed like they genuinely enjoyed their jobs. I'd highly recommend this place.

A lot of Organic Choices! Not too expensive! Most of the appetizers are huge! Service was great! Home-style Cooking! Now that I have gotten most of the positives out of the way, let's go to the negatives. Most of the food was hit and miss. We tried three appetizers and two entrees. The Humus sampler was great (we took some to go for later) and The "A Whole Lotta Leg..." was good. The Fried green tomatoes were a little on the bland side. The Shenandoah Roast chicken was the best dish we had that day! The beyond the James: Seasonal Grilled fish was a fresh caught wild salmon filet that day (it is a matter of availability what fish you get) with absolutely no seasoning what so ever. No salt. No pepper. No twist of lemon, nothing. However, it was grilled perfectly and the flaky texture was enough to carry me through the meal. The meal overall was an enjoyable experience, and if I am in that area again I will go back. Good and spacious for a family get-together. Plan to spend $45.00-$50.00 for a family of four (four drinks, an appetizer, two kids meals, and two entrees).

My husband and I crave their fried green tomatoes and that is saying a lot considering we are "Yankees". Sometimes the service is slow, but we are in the south so we just take it as the pace of the region. The service is always super kind and helpful though. This is a family place and you can tell. Other high points from the menu are: Sweet potato pancakes Veggie burger (made with pecans- a complete original) Cinnamon roll Hummus plate Crab cake Benedict Sage chicken sausage Another plus is the attached mini market: you can get a bottle of wine for later.

First, the ambiance of this historic building is flaunted and well loved. They have old time glasses, old coke and sprite bottles, they really go with the historic building feel to take you back in time to a slower pace of life. The service is great. The atmosphere is casual but very cozy and inviting. Almost a large Luke's from Stars Hollow if you're a GG fanatic. The food is aptly priced to be comprable to the quality of food. The food is great. Loved this place dearly!

Had late breakfast here today on the way back to NJ. This is a good place to stop before or after visit Popular Forest Thomas Jefferson's hideaway in the rolling hills of southern VA. Had lovely 'corncakes' with homemade sausage. They were 4-5 inches in size, three of them, and beautifully cooked (I hate giant undercooked pancakes). The sausage was tasty with a hint of sage. The space is interesting with pressed tin ceiling and medium sized 'market' of mostly specialty type foods -like a high end '7-11'. The lunch menu looked nice. See other reviews here for lunch.

Great atmosphere! Great for kids! Must try their sweet potato pancakes, burgers, and the fried green tomato BLT. This place is consistently good, but if you are bringing kids bring some things to do and snacks. The food sometimes takes a while, but I assume this is because they are actually cooking the food not just heating it up.

Great restaurant. I had breakfast here with a friend. The waiter was friendly and came by frequently to refill our coffee. The food was really tasty too. Will come back again when I am in the area.

Poor service. Smell of burnt food.Half cooked bacon that the waitress said was " the best they could do." This place was good when we first go there. Really gone down hill. Not coming back! What a shame.

Market at Main is inviting, friendly and yummy. The atmosphere is very comfortable and feels like a great family diner in a small town (which I guess it kind of is, but I wouldn't really say Lynchburg is small). The prices made me feel like I was going back in time. The most expensive thing on the menu is $6.95. You might think that with prices this low, the quality wouldn't be great, but you would be thinking wrong. It's delicious. I've tried the Turkey Panini and Chicken Salad. Both are delicious and fresh. The sweet potato fries and milkshakes are amazing. The staff is so friendly and attentive. Our waitress this past visit, Sybil, attended to our basic needs, keeping our glasses filled and other such things, but she also went above and beyond in many ways. She was awesome. I highly recommend Market At Main. It will be a great experience.

Went to Market at Main yesterday with some friends while visiting Lynchburg. I loved it! Cozy lunchcounter with big bright windows, high ceilings, and custom retro ceiling fans. The owner was very friendly (it helped my friend knows him ha), and the market was cute as well. I bought some glasses (I loved the retro coke glasses with the handle) and jalepeno salsa to take back. The food was well-priced, homemade and delicious. I had the three bean salad with moroccan dressing which was both complex and familiar. Friends had the sliced pit-beef like sandwhich and eggs. The breakfast potatoes are delicious morsels of oniony spicy goodness. I hope the market continues to do well, it will definitely become a favorite when I'm visiting Central VA. In DC, the place would be mobbed and trendy (and probably twice the price). Here, it's just a good value and comforting place.

Market At Main is a cute diner in downtown Lynchburg. I'd never had Fried Green Tomatoes before and I'm happy to say, I'm a fan. The meatloaf sandwich was good as was the fried shrimp platter. Our waitress, Cynthia was as sweet as could be. I'd always heard of southern hospitality and now I know what it means. The atmosphere is lively with a strong sense of community going on. The next time we're in Lynchburg, we'll definitely be stopping by.

Pretty good little spot for breakfast. Nice ambiance, good food, a nice craft beer selection, and friendly service. Being a big city native, I was quite pleased with what a sleepy Lynchburg restaurant had to offer.

Ok. I have eaten here a few more times and think I am ready to swear it off. The service is always soooo slow and they are very unorganized. The food is not bad, but this last time it came out cold. We also had to wait quite a while for drink refills. They seem to have plenty of staff, but they don't seem to have much focus. It is also very loud in here. They can't really do much about that due to the layout of the building, but it adds to the negative experiences I have had here. Oh well...

Finally, a good breakfast spot in downtown Lynchburg. Everything was good and fresh including the coffee. Very nicely rehabbed and decorated old building done to a high standard for a simple cafe/diner.

A homey place to have lunch or an afternoon coffee break. We came here twice during our stay to have breakfast and lunch. Someone mentioned in another review that the prices made them feel like they were going back in time, I couldn't think of a more accurate statement. We ordered the steak salad for lunch which came out to $6. First of all salad without the steak in San Francisco is $8+. The next day, the two of us went back for breakfast, complete with eggs, toast and choice of meat for less than $10. Good, hearty food for a great price. Very friendly service and inviting atmosphere.

We used to frequent this restaurant for breakfast every Sunday morning. Although the food has always been great, we quit going because after the first three trips there, we noticed that the wait time for someone to take our order became longer and longer. We gave it another try on three consecutive weekends and saw no improvement.

Add me to the fan base. I love the counter, and the sweet potato pancakes are super scrumptious. Fruit sides are varied, and fresh. It's become a staple in my downtown rounds (trying to spread the love, though, since I want them all to succeed).
