5 stars all the way. I've been a frequent customer and I always leave with a happy tummy. The service is fast, friendly and informative. It is apparent they care about customer satisfaction. Great group of people. Now, on to the food. Everything I've tried has been incredible, clean, fresh, and amazing flavors I haven't tasted elsewhere. The asian tacos have me hooked for life - as well as the steak Bahn Mi. Check this place out!!!!

"Zao always hits the spot" said my husband on our drive back from zao. The atmosphere is cute, simple with lively color. We always describe this as the Asian chipotle since they have the same set up/similar menu style. I almost always get the chicken bowl with chili lemon grass, half noodle half brown rice here ($7.05 including tax). My husband loves the meat balls as well. It's seriously so good! You can ask for almost extra anything with no extra charge (except for the protein). Their steak is $2 more than chicken, which in my opinion is not worth to get the steak. You can get 3 huge tacos with the same price. They are pretty generous with the portion so that's always a plus for me. If you haven't tried this place yet, I definitely recommend it! They're opening 3 more locations in Murray, Provo, and Fort Union. Yay!

Food was exactly what I was looking for. Delicious Asian proteins and healthy options! The service was reeeeeally frustrating. Before I even got to the counter the server was rushing me to order. I asked for a moment as we were the only ones there and he told me the menu is simple. Well, I'd still like to read it!?!!? As I ordered I was rushed once again and could barely hear over the loud music. If I didn't answer quickly enough if I wanted a certain topping he would just throw it on anyway and move to the next topping. It left me frustrated and getting some things I didn't want on my dish that I had to pick off it was still delicious but I recommend you thoroughly skin the menu before you walk in.

It's like a chipotle.... But asian. Fantastic choice of simplicity and different flavor. Medium sized portions. Cute seat yourself atmosphere!

As other reviewers have said its kind of like an Asian version of Chipotle. Although I think the produce they use may be considerably fresher. I don't see how anything on the menu is disappointing. I've had various combinations of their sandwiches, bowls and salads and have enjoyed all of it. Their meatballs are homemade and delicious and my favorite in tacos. I prefer half steak/half chicken in my salad or noodle bowls and tofu in their sandwiches. But like I said it is all yummy. The employees have been very courteous and considerate. I hope they keep up this quality and attitude. If they do I will continue to give them my money and stuff my face.

We had takeout on a Sunday night & I was extremely pleased. The salad with tofu was fresh (no bad lettuce pieces!) & flavorful, but not too spicy. We also tried the green curry sauce which was very good, as well as the meatballs. Great for vegans & omnivores alike... We'll definitely be back soon!

Zao Asian Cafe is a great alternative to other fast-casual places here in the Salt Lake Valley. When you're not feeling the need for fast food, or don't have the time/urge to go to a sit down restaurant, this place has you covered. When you walk in, you're greeted with bright colors and straight lines; something akin to the modern fast-casual places that seem to be popping out all over. It somewhat reminded me of the new layouts that a lot of the Zupas are doing; just green/yellow versus the Zupas blue/silver look. For seating, you have your half booth combinations (with chairs on one side) as well as high chair tables in the the center. For ordering, it is the same as many of the pseudo "do-it-yourself" places; you order your base food (such as a vermicelli bowl, banh mi Vietnamese style sandwich, tacos, etc.) and choose your protein. You then pick your available toppings and sauces. Everything is pretty straight-forward and not complex. I've had all the base food choices here, along with all the protein choices, and so far, the one I keep going back to are the tacos. There aren't too many places here in the valley that offer tacos with an Asian style twist, and every time I've had them, I haven't had to adjust my expectations as they are pretty consistent, and thankfully, are also good. For drinks, I really like their Thai Iced Tea. It's sweet, as expected, but not overflowing with sugar/cream/milk like some other places. I also think it's great that they offer different style sodas. If you're looking for a fast-casual place with some Asian influence, give Zao Asian Cafe a try.

since i practically live at costco (why do i shop there so much?), i watched this place being built over the past few months. i finally got the chance to try it and was not impressed at all. it's like an asian version of chipotle where you can customize your meal. the inside is beautiful - i love all the colors and paintings they have. the soda was the highlight of my meal - it was so fun to try different sodas that are made with cane sugar. thomas n. originally ordered the banh mi, but as soon as he saw the bread they used (not traditional baguette that is used for banh mi), he changed his mind and got a rice bowl instead. i also got a rice bowl with tofu, as that was their only gluten free protein option. i don't eat tofu, but thomas n. got to enjoy it. i loaded up on veggies and sampled all of their sauces. the fresh green curry one was my favorite, but it was way too spicy for me. the lemongrass one was too oily, but their sweet soy sauce was good. that's what i chose for my rice bowl and it was okay. my bowl was a bit boring and i had quite a variety of veggies and enough sauce in there. this place wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. i suppose it's okay if you're looking for fast "vietnamese" food. if you want good vietnamese food, go to hong phat for banh mi and pho saigon for everything else. your food won't be done as fast in a vietnamese restaurant, but it'll be tastier for about the same price. overall a disappointment and i don't expect to return.

Pretty cool concept. This is the place to slowly introduce Vietnamese food to your friends whose never had it. Yes it is a Vietnamese American menu but still serves justice to the bahnmi and bun (vermicelli noodles). The tacos are good as well. One of my co workers enjoyed our lunch here today. BAM!! I told her she just had her first Vietnamese food.

Like an Asian version of Qdoba. Chicken rice bowl with the green curry sauce hit the spot. Refreshing.

First time trying this place. I was impressed with my bank mi with chicken. It tasted pretty good. The Thai tea was alright it could use a little more cream in it. Other than that everything else was good.

To bad this place did not open till right before we moved! I had a fantastic pork Banh Mi sandwich! I have had a lot of these in Seattle and this one was first class!

Yum! Fresh and lots of flavor! The menu is pretty small and I like that. Steak was better than chicken. Try it!

Updated 03.14.15: My review originally pointed out a discrepancy with the restaurant, but I was invited back and management more than made up for it. We originally wanted to visit Zao because it seemed similar to Shophouse, a favorite chain of ours back home; and we got exactly what we were looking for. We got a chicken bowl with green curry sauce and a banh mi with meatballs. I'd recommend the bowl over the banh mi, but both were good. Wash it down with a Thai iced tea or a Vietnamese iced coffee and your life will be slightly less gloomy. Overall, I'd give the food 4 stars and an extra star for the great customer service I experienced.

This place is a great fast option for a quick meal. I had the Chicken tacos and they were delicious. I went during off hours so my chicken was a little cold but the flavor of the whole thing made up for it. You have to try this place!

Had the chicken rice bowl with green curry. Very spicy and I loved it. Being on the jalapeños! A lot to eat but very tasty.

Whenever I am feeling something simple yet delicious, I always come here. Zao's service is quick and easy which is simplistic. One benefit to this restaurant is that you could customize your meal however they don't provide a variety of foods to choose from. It has always been the same and hopefully they add more stuff onto the menu. Furthermore, one huge drawback from this place is that they provide little to almost no meats and just fills your plate (or depending on what you get) with vegetables.

  • Travis O.

Loved this place. The Zao taco ' s and noodle bowl was very tasty. Definitely I'd get them again. My only complaint was their Thai Tea. It was undrinkable. Watch out because the line can get very long.

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! This place is AMAZING! It has a Cafe Rio feel with limited menu items but perfection with every one of them! It is perfection through simplicity at its finest. My son, who is the pickiest eater I know, devoured his meal and said this is his favorite place other than Tiburon. My only worry is that this is so delicious that everyone will eventually find out and it'll be packed all the time. Maybe soon they will put one in South Jordan. I'm crossing my fingers...

For what it is, a quick fix of Vietnamese food, it's hard to beat. I'm no expert when it comes to this cuisine but I know delicious food when I eat it, and there is some delicious food at Zao. I highly recommend the Meatball rice bowl with green curry. There are so many delicious flavors going around in this dish. I enjoyed it very much.

First time here. The food was good and we will come again. I had the rice bowl with chicken with sweet soy sauce. The servers were friendly and explained how it all worked.

I really love the tacos at this place. Granted, they have a flavor that will stick with you for the better part of the day, but at least it's a great flavor! Chicken or steak, you can't go wrong. And my kids love the rice bowl with meatballs and the teriyaki chicken. I'm really happy about the new location as well seeing as it's so much closer to my house now. Fresh, tasty, food on the fly, what's not to like?!

  • Nikki H.

I went here today with my co-workers and we were all pretty pleased with our food. I ordered the tacos, with 2 chicken and 1 tofu. Since this was my first time there I had the girl behind the counter put everything on them. The food portion was pretty big and my total came to $7.50. The tacos themselves were delicious, the tofu one may have been my favorite as it was seasoned perfectly. I'll definitely be coming back here.

Basically an Asian version of Chipotle where you pick a type of dish (banh mi, tacos, salad, or a bowl), type of meat (chicken, meatballs, steak, or tofu), type of sauce (soy, green curry, or chili lemongrass) if you're getting the bowl, and then add a free-for-all of other extra toppings. The combinations are endless. I ended up getting the bowl with chicken and green curry sauce. Everything tasted pretty fresh and refreshing. Only thing that kind of bothered me was the crushed peanuts (one of the many toppings), as they were quite burnt. Anyways, Zao's is a great place for a quick refreshing meal.

Love their food it's so damn good. The soda is organic. The salads and rice bowls are nummers

  • Robert W.

Food is good but don't expect to be wowed by the portion sizes. I ordered the meatball bowl for 8 bucks you get 4 meatballs, pretty meager. Flavors are good but I won't be back.

  • Shayla B.

Loved this place! Absolutely delicious flavors, great portions, and friendly customer service. I ordered the noodle bowl with tofu and a mix of the lemongrass and the green curry. It was spicy without making me want to hesitate in eating and the flavors were amazing. My husband got the meatball bahn mi. He isn't a fan of "messy" sandwiches (or Thai/Vietnamese food in general) so this didn't "wow" him but he finished his meal and enjoyed it so that is something!

  • Michele T.

Delicious!!! This reminds me of an Asian Chipotle with meal options, meat options, and a cafeteria line format. I tried a brown rice bowl with chicken and sweet soy sauce. The serving was generous and delicious. My husband got a chicken salad and loved that the romaine lettuce was sliced to a manageable size. Please open in Arizona!!!

This place is so good! I always get the sandwich with chicken. It's the first thing I tried and I refuse to try anything else because it's so good. Good price, different food, nice atmosphere.

Love Love LOVE! I eat here at least once a week. It's so healthy and tastes amazing. Love that it's affordable too! My favorite is the the chicken tacos. YUM!!

Excellent. Loved it. Definitely going back. Try the coconut water with your favorite entree!

Choose-your-own-ingredients restaurant. I was very surprised and impressed with how good this was. The portions are large, and they have enough options to keep it interesting. The flavors blend well. The price isn't bad either. I would definitely recommend!

  • Tamara C.

Zao is a great concept. It's Chipotle meets Asian. The menu is straightforward and the atmosphere is casual and nice. I had the Bahn Mi, which was good but make sure you get it with a side of extra water...the food is SALTY!

    (4)
  • Bradford J.

Delicious flavors, good value. If you're really hungry, the most filling is the Bahn Mi sandwich. If you get a rice bowl, the brown rice is tasty. Three tacos is also a good option, and they're surprisingly large. Can't go wrong with their fair trade cane sugar sodas, either.

  • Kasey S.

I love Zao! I have eaten at the SLC location many times and am so happy to see one so close to my house!!! The tacos are my favorite, but the rice bowls are equally delicious!

    (5)
  • Dave R.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Anyone I talk to loves this place as well. My wife loves the tacos...I love the Curry chicken Rice bowl. And the organic sodas are amazing. Its tough for me to decide what to eat because I have had everything on the menu and love it all. My all time favorite food is curry chicken so I result to that a lot. Definitely a curry that even non curry lovers enjoy.

First time trying this place and I had no idea what to expect. It's basically like Chipotle, Cafe Rio or any other line-order type place but "Asian" food. I say "ASIAN" because I guess it has Asian inspired items on the menu and they call themselves an Asian cuisine restaurant but it was pretty Americanized to me. But I digress! So you walk in and you have three main items to choose from: banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwich), tacos or bowl then choose a meat, which were: chicken, steak, meatballs or tofu. I decided to get the bahn mi with meatballs. It came with a cucumber, pickled daikon and carrots topped with some sauces with the option of jalapeño but I opted out. It had all my favorite components of a banh mi, so I was pretty excited yet skeptical about it. While I was waiting/paying for my food to get prepared, I noticed they had Vietnamese iced coffee and Thai iced tea! I'm such a huge fan of Thai Tea, I had to have it! I asked the cashier if I could get one and I found it a little inconvenient that she told one of people assembling my sandwich to get my drink, which kind of threw off the process. I know they are a newer restaurant and I'm hoping that's one of the little kinks they will work out since I think that type of thing will cause delays in preparations in the future. Anyways, I finally got my drink and sandwich and I was pleasantly surprised. The baguette was toasted perfectly and still soft with the perfect crunch to it. All the ingredients came together so well especially with whatever sauce they put on it. Veggies in the sandwich were fresh and delicious! I was pretty satisfied with just half of the sandwich. I tried the meatball on its own and it was definitely something that probably should have stayed in the sandwich. Wasn't bad, but was definitely better with all the other components. I wish the Thai Tea was a little sweeter but that's just me. Overall, it was a good experience and I will definitely come back to try some tacos!

I took my boyfriend out to lunch here. My entree was the chicken and beef ricebowl with green curry sauce and veggies. My boyfriend got the meatballs ricebowl. That green curry sauce I coukd eat with a spoon!! The foodgasm of that. Ohhh Myyyy.. I live in Ogden and I hope we get a restaurant here, but I'd drive down to eat this again. The staff is really patient and will let you try sauces and meats to decide. The atmosphere is great. Very crisp and fusion.

Think Chipotle with a Vietnamese twist. Many new restaurants are adopting this business model and it has been proven to be very effective. Right when we stepped in, we were greeted and asked if there were any questions about the menu. First choose the type of entree you want (Banh Mi Sandwich, Tacos, Rice Bowl, or Salad) and then the meat (Chicken, Steak, Meatballs, or Tofu). I was able to try the chicken and meatballs in a bowl with vermicelli (rice) noodles, with no complaints at all. Also was able to add sriracha to spice things up. To quench my thirst, ordered a Thai Ice Tea and really liked it because it wasn't too sweet like others at other restaurants. What was pretty cool is that their fountain sodas had some interesting flavors besides the usual generic Coke. It was a quick, pleasant, and delicious meal that I will definitely be going back again for lunch.

They just opened this location last week and I really like it. The layout is really welcoming and full of bright colors. The location is really good too, with all of the new restaurants popping up in the Scheels parking lot. I tried the Zao chicken tacos and the chicken Bahn Mi. Both were really good. They have this spicy red/brown sauce on both that was super good. I also got their aioli sauce on my tacos and it added a nice touch. They tend to go a little heavy on the carrots, which made the sandwich soggy, so next time I will probably order light carrots. The bread on the sandwich was also really good, soft and grilled. They also have an awesome selection of natural real cane sugar sodas. I don't normally get a drink when I go out, but I had to try these. They have a root beer, vanilla cream, professor cane (dr. pepper?), lemon lime, Mexican cola all with real cane sugar. They were all really unique, the root beer and vanilla cream were my favorite. The staff was also super nice and let me try the meats and sauces since it was my first time. I will for sure be back, I really want to try a rice bowl with their green curry.

Food is always very flavorful. Simple and delicious. Big fan of their chicken tacos! Just wish they had nutrition facts on their menu. Aside from that, no complaints. Zao is a fantastic place!

This place is 5 stars by a long shot. My whole family loves Zao! The meatballs are awesome and so is the chicken. Nothing on the menu is bad. Best part is the Mecican Coke. The tacos are amazing too.

Awesome experience. I love the meatball bang mi sandwich but I do wish there were some side or combo options available with it.

SOOOOO good!! The food is fresh and healthy and the flavors are superbly blended for a deliciously symphonic meal! My daughter and I couldn't stop talking about how tasty it was and we will definitely be "regulars".... We are so happy that Zao has come to Sandy!

Hipster Asian food. Really unique and really good. I got the yellow curry sauce and it was way delicious. Great environment and really helpful staff. The owner was in at the time and he even approached us to make sure we were having a great experience. Definately recommend.

Think Chipotle but with Vietnamese food. Not authentic, but still good. It's actually set up just like Chipotle. You can make a Bahn Mi sandwich, salad, noodle/rice bowl, tacos. FOOD: Bahn Mi with Chicken (5 stars): My fav here. Not exactly like an authentic bahn mi but still a tasty sandwich. Added jalapenos which were surprisingly spicy. Green curry noodle bowl (4 stars): The curry is actually pretty good. Add in cucumbers (= Tacos (5 stars): Really flavorful. Don't think of this as traditional Vietnamese food because you'll be disappointed. It's not traditional, but it's still really good and has lots of flavor! America Vietnamese (= haha.

  • Johnny L.

This place was close by so we decided to check it out. Americanized Vietnamese food, I thought I'd never see the day. But it's a great idea, you take the salad and banh mi and express style the orders and give everyone options. Genius. Having options is pretty nice considering that these foods normally come as is. For being "americanized" the food is actually pretty good! The only downside to this is the price. I don't remember what my wife's noodle salad costed, but my banh mi was about $9. You can get those for $3 elsewhere, just as good.

  • Jason M.

This is tucked away in the corner of Cabellas and easy to overlook. The menu is simple, perhaps to simple and the food is "trendy" at best. Ricebowls, tacos, and sandwich are options. Fresh ingredients but I feel the meats are a little bland. The sauces and optional toppings can spice it up quickly though. There are no sides which I find wierd. I feel the price is a little high for what you get. Overall a good spot but not one I would regularly visit for this type of food.

Same awesome consistent tasting food. So glad this place came in existence in Sandy. :-)

  • Ellen W.

The Chicken and Pork Meatballs are so delicious!! I love this Asian version is Chipotle's assembly line and menu choices. Simple, fresh, and healthy. I got the meatball salad with all the fixings --- rice noodles, green onions marinated with ponzu sauce, cilantro, sweet carrots, peanuts, and more. The staff are super friendly here. Oh, and they let you sample their food on with their Thai ice tea and Vietnamese iced coffee. Drinks were way too sweet, but the food was on point! I hope they open one in Cali soon.

    (4)
  • Saydee X.

Highly recommend the meatball tacos!! Sauces are on point! The only thing I didn't like was the teriyaki sauce I got with my bowl and the Thai ice tea taste like it was from the can but everything else was great!

    (4)
  • Erin B.

In short, I'd say this place is an asian version of chipotle. In more detail it's pretty straitforward. You pick your meat (beef, chicken, meatballs or tofu), pick your starchy vehicle (rice, rice noodles, tortilla or toasty baguette), and pick the extras (sauces, vegetables, etc). I went with the housemade asian meatballs on a baguette, yum! There's not a whole lot going on at Zao, but what they offer is exactly the sort of thing I like in a 'good food fast' sort of restaurant: delicious food made fresh to order with real wholesome ingredients. This asian gal will definitely be back for more!

  • Lee B.

Welcome to the Asian Subway. The menu is limited to four items: Banh Mi, Zao Taco, Salad and Bowl. The food is all precooked and sitting out. Prices range based on protein you choose to place on your selection. I had the Banh Mi with chicken, which was ok, but not great. Wife had the steak bowl which seemed dry and bland. The Thai Tea tasted horrible, the worst I have ever had. The one saving grace is the nice guy at the counter. Tried once and that was enough.

  • Nicholas R.

I really love this place. The food is amazing. Spices are flavorful and they have Fair Trade drinks in the fountain machine. I never see Zaos busy. I'm not sure why.
