About TGI Friday
TGI Friday is a casual dining American restaurant chain founded in 1965. The term “TGI” is an acronym for Thank God It's and together the name of the restaurant is often announced as Thank God It's Friday. Over the years of its existence, the TV commercials and other advertisement streams have also twisted the phrase a bit and used it as Thank Goodness It's Friday. The restaurant serves alcoholic beverages primarily. However, they are also known for their low-carbohydrate and low-fat menu items to promote a healthy lifestyle. TGI Friday also offers gluten-free items on its menu for those with gluten intolerance.
Besides the cool name, TGI Friday also has an interesting background story of its origin. The founder of the restaurant Alan Stillman lived in a New York-based neighbourhood full of a young crowd, especially girls from the airline and fashion industry. He started the first TGI Friday restaurant in New York in the hope of meeting single women as there weren't any such public place for young men and women to meet. He invested $5000 on his own and borrowed another $5000 from his mother to buy a bar named The Good Tavern and renamed the premise to Thank God It's Friday, inspired from an expression during his time at Bucknell University.

Great food, friendly service. Nice to see a business as long lasting as this one. Full bar as well. Family atmosphere.

This place is where most tourists think of going to when they visit Fredericksburg for the German experience. I have been here a few times. Food is pretty good although I have not eaten enough German to give it an accurate comparison. It may be the best in the world or could be not so good. I have eaten the steaks there and they are very good although maybe a little overpriced. The one thing that really bugs me about this place is that I ordered a soda and got a refill after waiting too long for our food. I was told that is my first refill and I only get one more. Thought that was a little ridiculous considering how much you pay for food. Think this place is more of a tourist trap. There are other German restaurants in town that you probably enjoy more.
(2)Wallace G.
I have been all over the world and have NEVER had German food this horrible! The sauerkraut came out of a can (cooked enough to know) the jaeger schnitzel was terrible!! It may have been an off day for them or their chef didn't know German cuisine but either way I would recommend going to "Wiener schnitzel" for more authentic food than this restaurant.
(1)Jennifer G.
Worst German food we EVER had!!! Beer is good - it's bottled so they couldn't screw that up. The Escargot wasn't bad - what does that say about a German restaurant? DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! Go to McDonalds!
(1)Randal C.
i love German food this place is not the place to get it. the bread is good and the sauerkraut was nice everything else tastes like it was afrom a can or cheap quality. I suggest trying one of the other German places they can't be worse.
(2)Janie B.
One star is too much for this place. For stars the entrance is weird and creepy like a horror film all of the decor was decrepit and dusty and very repulsive. The only nice thing about this place was the host she was a doll and apologized for the rude owner who refused service to friend, who is blind because of her guide dog. This is illegal this place should be shut down for violation of American disabilities act. Horrible place very mean mean owner hard to believe people like this still continue to act like this we left with my friend feeling horrible and it tears

Cute place food is great for the price and like that staff is in traditional costumes. Great bar in the back.
(4)M T.
Wonderful atmosphere. Our waitress was great. She answered all of your questions about the menu. The portion were hugh. I would return, if I am ever in Fredericksburg, again.
(5)Bob M.
The food is good and well-priced. The German potatoes were not authentic, but the schnitzel is very well-prepared. Beer selection is OK - everything appears to be bottled. Sauerbraten sauce is not appealing. Overall, good place to get some German food.
(3)Terry S.
Ate lunch here today. It was delicious. Cabbage soup was great and jäger schnitzel was great. The waitress was training a girl but service was still good.
(5)Eija O.
We ate here because it was convenient to our hotel. What a disappointment . To sample the food , we ordered the basic Bavarian schnitzel and bratwurst and knock wurst platter. The schnitzel was soaked with awful gravy..no flavor. The sausages were nothing special and the sides of red cabbage and spaetzel were both out of a can. The spaetzel was awful, like undercooked macaroni, nothing like real spaetzel is supposed to be. The red cabbage must have been straight out of a can. The cup of cabbage soup that was served as an appetizer, was tasty . The carrot cake was also very good and moist but probably not home made either . We did not have time to try other German restaurants in Fredericksburg but any of them must be better than this. This is a classic tourist trap.

For years Friedhelm's was one of my favorite restaurants in the great state of Texas. I couldn't drive through F'sburg without stopping. I always got schnitzel, spaetzle, red cabbage, soup and a wheat beer. For years I was never disappointed. Over the last couple of years we have been disappointed and when we were going through there this month we were seated and waited 15 minutes without menus, drink orders or even a "hello" so we left and went to another restaurant. I hope this place gets its act together because I would love to be able to be able to enjoy them again.
(1)Garry H.
I love the food here. Each trip I try a different schnitzel. All have been so good. If you like a sweet red cabbage, this is the place. Soup was also good. Yes, the prices are a little high, but this is my splurge.
(4)Dee G.
Had schnitzel for lunch with soup, the soup was very good, cabbage and vegetables in beef broth. Schnitzel was very tender and tasty. Husband had a burger, said it was above average, but not the greatest. Not on the top of my list, but not bad either. A decent lunch. If they had my favorite: German Potato Salad, I would have added a star. I was surprised that they did not offer it.
(3)Ashley S.
Kelly, the waitress, was lovely. The other waiters seemed jovial and helpful as well. The sausage was amazing, I got the bratwurst but I thought my bf's choice, the knackwurst, was the best. A little pricey but legit German food.
(4)Sam R.
Well, I didn't get German food, I got a burger. It was an alright burger and the potatoes were good. It was okay. A three star meal, three and a half at best. I tried my family's German dishes but did not enjoy them at all. The ambiance of this place is on the German theme but I thought it was pretty ugly in there. Maybe that's just me.

We recently stopped by Friedhelm's on Father's Day for an authentic German meal, but there were so many missteps that I'd never go back- even for Dad. Let's start at the beginning. The unfriendly hostess took our party of 6 to the worst table- next to entrance of the kitchen. When we requested another table (mind you, it is 11:15 a.m. and most tables are available), the hostess said that it was Father's Day and that there were none available. After pointing out the obvious to her, she reticently seated us at a much better table. Our waitress, friendly enough, obviously was not versed in German food or its pronunciations. Someone wearing a dirndl should at least pronounce the dishes fairly well. We ordered wine (it was father's day- wine is okay that early!) and were given the bottle to pour for ourselves. She was quick to bring out bread, salads, and soup, but then we sat for what seemed forever. She finally came back to tell us that the kitchen lost our tickets. She promised that despite the slip up, the food would be hot, but mine was not. Other people in the party did not like the food and the review that noted that the spaetle looked like Ramen noodles was right. Schnitzels were cut too thickly and the red cabbage acidity was not balanced. The jalepeño burger fell apart- the patty was not drained well. At 1:20 (more than two full hours after we started), we got our bill with no discount for the lost ticket and not even a comped dessert. The tip, of course, was already included. They probably don't care about providing good service because they must think tourists only come occasionally. What they forget is that tourists talk amongst themselves and yelp.
(2)Jennifer R.
This is a pretty authentic German restaurant. The decor and ambiance are a bit lodge like, but we were seated straight away among the mature crowd. We started the meal with a very flavorful soup and bread. Both were outstanding. The salads were next. They were a simple salad that were tossed in vinegar then dressed. My boyfriend and I shared the Bavarian schnitzel and the sausage platter. The meats were all amazingly flavorful. We liked the white sausage the best. For our sides, we had the sauerkraut and spetzel. The kraut had rye seeds. I wasn't a fan, but my bf liked it. We both found the spatzel to be a tad bland. All in all it was a tasty meal. It was a tad pricy, but worth it.
(4)Bill R.
Stopped in for dinner after a fun day bottling bourbon at Garrison Brothers Distillery. Walking through several dining rooms to the far back, I was a little off put by a subtle aroma of sewer. This was not a problem though where I was seated. I ordered sauerbraten. The cabbage vegetable in beef broth soup was tasty. Sauerbraten was not bad. After eating at Alpine Haus in New Braunfels, three stars is the best I can do. If you don't mind going a little out of your way you'll find exquisite German food at Alpine Haus. Much better than here.
(3)L S.
Did not try the food, only visited for a drink at the bar. The place was pretty dead, it was about an hour before closing time on a Saturday night. Found the bar and ordered a few beers and a shot. Bartender was friendly enough and prices were average. The owner was apparently sitting three stools down from us with a lady friend so I'm sure everyone in the place was on their best behavior.
(3)Corey K.
I love this place... I would move in upstairs if they would let me. The food is always amazing and the beer is always ice cold. The atmosphere is always warm and charming. It feels of home. Had a friend stay in one of the rooms upstairs one time and we sat out on the balcony and enjoyed a very nice evening watching the sun go down over the hill country. I'm sorry for the others that may have had a bad experience at Friedhelm's but, my wife and I couldn't be happier when we are there.
(5)Angelica C.
What a waste! I was amazed at how awful everything was! The service was so slow and careless, the food was subpar at best, and the place is just ugly inside. Go to Der Lindenbaum on Main Street by the Nimitz Museum instead, it's exponentially better in every way.
(1)Susanna J.
We stayed across the street and the front desk recommended this place. My husband had schnitzel and loved it. I has bratwurst and it was very good. We have been to Fredericksburg several time and eaten at different German restaurants and this one is good...not the best in my opinion but good. It is a neat building, but a little dark and musty, but the bar area is cool. Service was a little slow, but our waiter was attentive. I did think they were pricy, but it is a tourist place. When we come back to Fredericksburg we might come here again, just have to save our expensive dinner as this place.
(4)David D.
Great authenic German food, the cabbage and schnitzel were very good.
(4)Jimmy M.
The food is really good. We got the schnitzel with the peppers and spatzel. sausage plate for an appetizer. Really good, staff was great. They lose a star for price. It's in a touristy area, but the prices are pretty darn high for what you get.
(3)Gunter K.
My wife and I went this past April to a trip to Fredericksburg, as I am a German Executive Chef and we wanted to experience some German Cuisine. We went to eat here and I must say, what a disapointment! If you are not able to make your own Spätzle and have to buy them dried, don't put them on the menu, or at least reheat them in Butter, enstead the same low quality grease you cooked the Schnitzel in. Sauerkraut and Red Cabbage has nothing to do with authentic German Food. The waitress was new and had no glue about any of the Food. She should have at least being trained with somebody. The other 2 German Restaurants in Town where we ate the next 2 nights, Lindenbaum and Ausländer are much better.
(1)Jo Mam A.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. THIS PLACE SUCKS!! We went to this place on a recommendation of a local. This was by far the worst German food that I have ever had.The service sucked too. I had high expectations when the soup came out hot and delicious, it ended there. The salad was delivered seconds before the main course. I ordered the sauerbraten, which was tough and cold. The gravy had already glazed over so I knew that it was the waiters fault. The vegetables were cold as well. I asked to get a new HOT dish as it was $20. The waiter must have just put it in the microwave as he was back in a jiffy with food warm on the outside and piping COLD on the inside. Then to boot the meat had no taste. It was basically roast beef with packet gravy poured on top, My husband ordered the schnitzel and stated that it was bland and no where near hot. He commented that the spaetzle was like ramen noodles and wouldn't eat it (he eats everything.) So when I read another post that thought they looked and tasted like ramen, I had to laugh. When he asked to get a different side. The waiter told him that he would be charged for it. Maybe they don't care what they put out as this is a tourist town and most people won't be back. I know I won't be back to Friedhelm's . I don't mind paying good money and getting good service and food, but this is not the place. Just because you put a German name on the sign out front doesn't mean you know how to cook German food. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!! Did I say, This place SUCKS!
(1)Phil M.
Don't waste your time or money here....eat at Der Lindernbaum in town for half the price and the real deal authentic German quality! I called days ahead to inquire about their menu, since it wasn't posted on their website. They gladly emailed me a copy of both the lunch and dinner menus. Nowhere on the lunch menu does it state it only applies on weekdays up to 3:30. The difference in price between menus was significantly more of the dinner. We were traveling with friends on a tight budget, so we thought the lunch menu was perfect. We called back 2 different times to get clarification on the lunch menu ending time, with the second being on Sat we were coming. The still didn't make it clear that it was only the dinner menu on the weekend. Upon arriving, we found all this out after we were seated. Since the menu was pretty extensive with choices, we all decided to stay and try it out. I've never had schnitzel portions that small, as well as thick and not flattened nor crispy like it should be. I was glad I ordered the Jager sauce on the side and I'd recommend anyone else do the same, so you can be in control of the sauce dosing. I still drizzled it on, but not impressed with the flavor....almost like it came out of a can. The next day I decided I wouldn't be happy leaving a German heritage town without some "good" German food. We ate at Der Linderbaum and were VERY satisfied from the better quality and pricing from the day before. The Jager Schnitzel here had fresh mushrooms in the sauce and everything else seemed very authentic and satisfying.
(1)Erika B.
This is Ben and my favorite little German place. We just like the atmosphere and the types of schnitzels you can get is pretty varied. This last time I got a Jager Schnitzel and Ben got a Pepper schnitzel. With the order comes a cup of vegetable cabbage soup, dark bread, salad and one side. So that was a pretty good deal. So the schnitzel is battered and then pan fried. I have seen schnitzel without batter and I prefer the battered variety. Then tons of whatever topping you ordered is lathered onto the schnitzel. So I had lots of mushrooms and plenty of gravy - so very yummy. Ben's schnitzel was piled high with peppers. We both got the pan fried potatoes which are like french fries and shared an order of sour kraut. I like mine without rye, but it was still very good. I read a lot of the reviews and people complained about how dark it is. Ben and I discussed this and most of the restaurants we ate at in Germany were dark. One was so dark that I could barely see across the room. So maybe this is a German thing, I don't know. Service was great. As soon as we would finish one item the other would be making its way to our table. Eat Well,
(4)E G.
Good solid German food and steaks. The complementary warm fresh bread and vegetable soup are great. The double-cut pork chop had fantastic flavor, it'll be had to order anything else when I return.
(4)Garen M.
Pretty good for a tourist restaurant. Their food was good and the service was very attentive.
(3)Chris D.
The food was nothing special and the service was rather pedestrian as well. The meal was much pricier than the service and food warranted.
(2)Jesse P.
The Service and Atmosphere was great but the food was a bit bland and was not as good as I had expected.
(3)Ken K.
staff seemed friendly. better quality food than what is the main strip. The one thing we didn't like, the carrot cake desert. Made somewhere else and brought in. No flavor compared to others. They didn't make it, so maybe not their fault. However, they still charged us for it, even with only a couple bites from it. So that is why I didn't give them the 5 stars.
(4)Joseph S.
Great ambiance, but holy smokes, the food couldn't have been blander. And at almost $20 per plate for most of their entrees made it more of a disappointment. Maybe they had a rookie cook working the day we were in. The food tasted like something from my junior high school cafeteria.
(1)Christine V.
The service is interesting... It seems as if none of the staff wants to be there! I think our waiter might have had an OFF day! The food wasn't too bad.. My sister had a salad that had the bad parts of the iceberg.. but my schnitzel was good (see photo) and my parents enjoyed their sausage platters! If you are interested in German-type food and you are in the area... it's worth a try!
(4)Lisa D.
We always have to eat here when we come to f'burg. The service is hit or miss ... some unenthusiastic older ladies waiting sometimes. They don't necessarily make mistakes they just don't make you feel welcome I guess...... but we had a young energetic male, Sergio I believe, that treated us very well. It is very rare these days to get customer service like it anywhere. My husband loves the sausage plates, I like the Schnitzel and the soup. The bread is really good.. if you like dark wheat bread. We will go back many times I am sure.
(4)Dongning S.
The first authentic German food restaurant I have ever been to! With some German friends and others and they are amazed at the chicken liver I ordered lol. Wanna try something new but it is not exactly to my taste. Nevertheless I think it is quite well done and the pumpernickel bread is aaaaamazing! Service is nice but a bit slow.
(3)JAMIE C.
Horrible. Been on a long road trip from California, used Yelp all the way and the food has been great. This time we took the advice of a local. This place is a tourist trap. It smelled bad had the ambiance of a barn and the food was mediocre at best. It absolutely amazes me that anyone who uses Yelp would ever recommend this place. A two star rating is being generous,
(2)Michael B.
Excellent service. Food was great as always. We go here every year for. My birthday. Wouldn't think of any place else.
(5)Bob P.
This place is hit or miss. While it does have the ability to deliver good food, consistency is a problem. My most recent stay resulted in the waiter bringing New York strip rather than the prime rib I had ordered. Rather than bring me a prime rib he repeatedly argued with me that the steak delivered was a prime rib. Seriously, anybody who had eaten both can tell the difference. The waiter, who turns out was the owners son, was the most arrogant waiter I have ever encountered. I asked to speak with the owner and did. All Ivan say is the apple does not fall far from the tree. The owner continued to argue with me about the order. There are many other places in Fredericksburg where one can actually get a good food and good customer service. Pass this one by.
(1)Bob V.
After a long wait, the service was extremely slow, the food was mediocre, and the presentation was indifferent. It was apparent they were understaffed, but there were no redeeming highlights.
(1)James F.
Where restaurants like Outback Steakhouse fail to deliver a true "Aussie" experience; Freidhelms gets closer to the mark than I thought it would. My parents have dined her multiple times over the last couple of decades and for my birthday dinner I decided to see if it was worth the hour drive. The grounds are well maintained making the restaurant inviting from the outside. Upon entering, there are a couple of well lit dining areas followed by a few darker spots as you move back towards the bar. There was a prime candidate for the worlds' largest sectional couch in the bar. The walls were decorated with "stuffed" animals from all over the world reminding me of my parent's home. No wonder they like this place Moving onto the food; the prices are fairly standard for a three course meal in a tourist trap like Fredericksburg. We enjoyed the Cabbage soup with a rich broth with plenty of vegetables. The salad was basic but unlike another yelper I found the Blue Cheese dressing to be mellow and rather tasty. Our Schnitzels were perfectly cooked with no oily residue. My Jagerschnitzel with a smoky Paprika and mushroom gravy was delicious. Jenny's cheese version met her expectations as well. The sides really made me a believer on the overall experience. The red cabbage was sweet and absolutely exquisite. The Sauerkraut was a classic version falling between mild and extremely sour. Dad has his regular we have now dubbed "American Schnitzel" with extra onions. Service as a whole was solid. I couldn't help but notice the server grabbing our glasses by the rim so some points off there. I nearly gasped at the "Lighter Fare" portion of the menu with Chicken Fried Steak and Sausage platter. Must be a snack in Germany I might reckon? While I was satisfied denoting a three star experience; I'd still like to sample some of the other restaurants in Fredericksburg to find a real gem. Regardless, I wouldn't hesitate to return to Freidhelms for another Schnitzel fix.

Another one of my must visit restaurants in Fredericksburg! Get the zwiebel schnitzel and enjoy -- delish!
(4)Kristen H.
Decent food; slow service.
(3)Melissa H.
Service was good but definitely not worth the $20/plate - food was bland. The best part of the meal was their blueberry cheesecake.
(2)Dona A.
Good food, good service. If you are looking for a tourist hot spot in Fredericksburg, this is it.

This was the first time I ate German food so I can't really compare it to anything. However, the Schnitzel I had was seasoned nicely, the texture was good and the eggs on top were cooked to my liking. The potato side dish was mundane and unflavored however. I would totally go back just to eat their schnitzel again, the next time I'm in Texas.

There's a certain large, magical rock located north of town. While visiting that large, magical rock, I asked the friendly people who worked at headquarters where to eat in Fredericksburg. They told me it was a toss-up between Friedhelm's and one other place. The young guy behind the counter at Enchanted Rock in fact put his hands out in that "guns blazing" gesture and exclaimed, "Dude, the schnitzel!" So, I even knew what to order. Now, I am nothing close to a connoisseur or gourmand--I just know cool words like those--and this is especially true of me and German food. I'm pretty sure that before Friedhelm's, the closest I'd come to German food was the occasional sausage and beer. On the whole, Friedhelm's made a good impression on me. The exterior and interior are very clean and well-kept. I was seated beyond the well-lit front rooms, in a middle darker section. When my eyes adjusted, it was a good, relaxing atmosphere, and there was still enough light to read a book (if you wanted to). My waitress looked like she had been there a number of years, and she was fairly kind and attentive (kept my water full, etc.). She also was happy to explain anything about the dishes (since there was a lot I didn't know). Here's what I received and consumed and am now reviewing: 1. dunkel weizen (dark wheat ale) - my first time to have this darker kind of wheat beer, very tasty at first, but these always taste worse once I've eaten some 2. soup - decent stew, carrot and cabbage, okay appetizer 3. bread - later found out it was a dark "wheat molasses", pretty damned cool 4. salad - nothing super-tasty, as another review said, but my bleu cheese dressing DID have good bleu cheese in it, and the PRESENTATION was spot-on -- it was a good-lookin' set of vegetables 5. spaetzle - came out with my entree, tasted pretty good, didn't need any extra flavoring, but it also reminded me of simple noodles I'd made at home a few times, i.e., not all that "spae-cial" (BAD PUN ALERT) 6. schnitzel - supposedly what I came for, this cut of meat tasted alright, and as another review noted, the breading stayed completely on, which is something I DARE your chicken-fried steak to have happen to it; another positive regarding this dish is that the peppers, onions, and tomatoes garnishing my particular order ("pepper" schnitzel) were supposed to be "flame kissed", and they actually were; in fact, I think the schnitzel would have been significantly poorer without those added flavors, for whatever that tells you. So, overall, this place is pretty good for what it is. I would come here again if I were a tourist with somebody I loved and I wanted to share a special evening over slightly pricey food. But if you're just looking to sample some German stuff with your buds and you don't want to spend a lot, maybe you should look down the road.

Our recent party of 8 dined on a friday night they were slightly busy BUT we waited almost 50 minutes to get soup and salad, and another 30 plus minutes for slightly warm food that was nothing special at all. the only good food at our table were the burgers, we could have eaten burgers anywhere for a lot less and not had to suffer the horrible service and extremely long wait.
(1)Laura A.
Rude waitress. German beer not on tap, only in bottles. No German/Bavarian salad dressing, just boring ranch, bleu cheese, etc. Jagerschnitzel ok, gravy way too peppery. Schnitzel with paprika was better. Spaetzle was NOT good, it looked like spaghetti noodles and tasted like them.. not the small, dumpling-like spaetzle I am used to, but hey, I'm not German, so maybe I am wrong here. Soup was not good, but everyone else at the table liked it. I have to say the bread was awesome! All in all, BIG disappointment. Isn't this supposed to be a German town? We will not be back.
(2)Jim S.
Probably the best steak I ever had.
(4)Barbara W.
This place is not hip. They probably haven't changed anything in years. I don't care. I love it. My sister and I split the schnitzel with mushroom sauce, shared the salad, soup (beef-vegetable, which was amazing) and the side that came with it, and had more than enough to eat. Plus we got some great brown bread with butter and split an apple strudel to finish. The price is right, the service is nice, and I'll go back. I was surprised they don't have any German beers on draft. So I tried the Julius Echter Hefe-weiss in a bottle and really liked it. Yum.
(4)Kris M.
Last two times I was there I received horrible service and it was off peak times so no excuse. When I asked for the gratuity to be removed for my Hubbie myself and three children they refused. Food is ok but overpriced. Will not return again. Many other much better German food options in Fredericksburg.

Ok... update! And I'm happy about it! Back through here the other day 10-14-2010 and stopped in... just because I couldn't let this place go without another chance. GLAD WE DID! It was back to the place we remember. I'm guessing that there was something going on last time. The staff was VERY gracious and helpful. The food was outstanding and the prices were what I remember (maybe last visit was on a Sunday? and there were diff prices?). Anyway, I am happy because this is just a great German food place (really the best in Fredericksburg). I guess the time and day matter. Lunch and not Sunday. Wife had Jager-Schnitzel and I had Holstein-schnitzel (same as Jager but with an egg on top).
(5)Paula E.
Didn't live up to expectations, at least not for the price. Food was ok enough, but I've had much better for about 40% less just a few blocks down Main Street. It has been 2 years since we ate here, so maybe it's better now. The place was kind of musty, the lady at the hostess stand seemed to be an owner or manager, walked with her nose high in the air. Our waiter acted as if he were serving a $200 bottle of wine in a 5 star restaurant, when in fact his recommendation was a rather boring red at about twice the price for the same quality at two of our favorite restaurants on the other end of Main Street. Looks great from the outside, not so much on the inside.

Best REAL German food in our area!
(5)Michael K.
I stopped in for lunch while place passing through Fredricksburg. I liked the atmosphere and the staff was friendly. I had the steak (medium rare) with potatoes, but it was tough to chew. I wish I had another opportunity to try the items on the menu, but it wasn't worth 50 bucks w/tip for a beer, salad, potatoes and a steak, nor was it worth stopping on my long travel through Texas.

This place sucks. The service, from the hostess to our waiter, were slow unfriendly and unwelcoming. The building is huge but 3 dining rooms crowded, overlit, and very dated. We came with early, all dressed up ready to celebrate a birthday and almost walked out before ordering (after sitting for 10 minutes with no service at all) but stayed against our better judgement. When salad was finally served, the main meal appeared about a minute later. I will say the food was good - the pepper schnitzel was good ( a little salty but very tender and flavorful) and osso bucco was awesome. We will never return. Every other restaurant we ate at in Fredericksburg was much better. Our b&b agency recommended this place and we won't take their advice again! Stay away.
(1)Kevin S.
The restaurant came recommended from the B&B where we were staying. We had some good friends with us that come from a very strong German heritage and know German cuisine. They were disappointed to say the least. We all ordered the Jäger Schnitzel and I thought it was a bit bland, but ok. Our friends ordered the same and commented on the sauce being weak, the breaking being soggy and he schnitzel itself, much too thick. They both ordered the spatzel and when it arrived, looked at t and said,"this isn't spatzel." it looked like short Ramen noodles to me. My wife ordered the creme brûlée for dessert and said it was rubbery. Service was good, atmosphere was a bit hokey and touristy and portions were more than acceptable.......but.....we won't be giving it another chance. Overall, thumbs down.
(1)Shelley S.
Had a wonderful experience here! Kay gave us excellent service and the food was amazing. The Jäger Schnitzel was moist and tender, and the red cabbage was cooked perfectly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
(5)Jay E.
After being stationed in Europe for over 6 years I was hoping for a better experience but we were sadly disappointed. The restaurant is a little dated but it's similar to what you would find in Germany, service is friendly and slower paced like you'd find in Europe. The soup starter tasted authentic, a simple broth with carrots, cabbage, and onions. The salad was fresh but they didn't have the simple dill German dressing for it?! The Jagerschnitzel was seasoned and tender, the mushroom sauce was tasty but the spatzle looked and tasted like cut up spaghetti. If you're looking for authentic German food I recommend you go elsewhere.

This is our 'go to' restaurant every time we make a visit to Fredricksburg. We originally found this restaurant from a recommendation of our friends who live in Fredricksburg. I'll break down my review in two distinct phases. Before and after our trip to Germany. Visiting this restaurant before our trip to Germany, we loved it, and would have given it 4 stars. We enjoyed the food and rustic atmosphere, and at the time we considered the food to be authentic since we didn't know enough about real German food to compare it to. Then, we spent two weeks touring around southern Germany in 2010, where we were immersed in authentic Bavarian cuisine. Upon our return, we looked forward to another visit to Friedhelm's to compare the cooking to our newly trained palates. While we still enjoyed the experience, it was easy to see that this restaurant does not deliver a truly authentic Bavarian culinary experience, but it's about as close as you'll get in South Texas! Hits that were both good and authentic included the cabbage soup, Jager Schnitzel, and Saurbraten. The salad was nothing like what you'd actually get in Germany, so in my opinion that detracted from the authenticity of the restaurant. I'd recommend they retire the salad and instead add a German Potato Dumpling, Kartoffelklösse, to the menu. Also, I think they need to include roasted Ox on the menu, which was a staple menu item during our tour of Germany. Unfortunately, service was awful during our last visit this past weekend. While the food was excellent, it took along time coming, and our server was not attentive to water and beer refills. We actually had to go to the bar to get another beer. We gave up after waiting 20 minutes to try to get his attention. Speaking of which, the bottled beer is excellent..all German! The tap selection was disappointing as it consisted of miller/bud/coors light selections. The taps would have been considered an insult in Germany. All in all, the food is good, the service is lackluster, the bottled beer selection is fantastic. Stick to the schnitzels and you'll enjoy the food.

I feel as if Freidhelm's has gotten a bad rap from other posts that I have read. I noticed that most people don't like the decor or the plates. I am only interested in the food. So, that is how I am rating my experience. As a kid my Father was in the Army for 23 years. We spent 9 of those years in Germany. Although we are Irish/Norweigian decent, German food became a childhood comfort food for me. I was excited to find Freidhelm's and was anxious to see how good it would be. German food is hard to come by and good german food is even harder to find. I ordered the jagerschnitzel and spaetzle and like Anton Ego in the movie Ratatouille, I flashed back to my childhood and how delicious my mom's schnitzel was. The spaetzle was even better than my Mom's. On my Mother's defense, spaetzel is very hard to make at home. It was light and buttery and needed no salt or butter. The pork schnitzel was tender with a crisp breading. The breading did not slip off the meat which means they take the time to let the meat stand after they bread it. Which takes time and you do not see very often in other restaurants. The brown gravy was rich with a perfect consistancy. It stuck to the Schnitzel and spaetzel but not too thick. There were plenty of mushrooms as well and cooked perfectly. German food can be bland and salt and pepper are usually always needed. But not here. I was disapointed they did not have any German beers on tap, only in bottles. But not a deal breaker because the food was so good. The meals on the weekends are a little pricey at $17.95, but If you go during the week you will save about $6.00 an entree.

Just Meh. The service was good, attentive staff. The interior decor was about what one would expect in a tourist area like Fredericksburg. Lots of German Kitsch, big cowbells, Cuckoo clocks, and cheesy paintings of the German Countryside. It took a long time for the food to get to the table. Could be due to what I ordered, but I was not expecting to spend more than 2 hours in the place. Everything in the place is a bit dated, but I was not overly concerned with the decor. I was there for what I was told was the best, most authentic German food in town. If this is the case, please give me the least authentic, most flavorful German food in town, as this stuff was not worth it. The significant other ordered the Sauerbraten , and while I was planning on getting a Schintzel, the wife pointed out that they had Ossobuco, and I didn't even bother looking at the menu any longer. I was so very disappointed. All of the food comes with soup, a salad with your choice of dressing, and the entree. The soup was a cabbage and vegetable, served in a small pewter cup. Again, very touristy. It had a good flavor to it, and as I think about it, was probably the best tasting thing I had all night. I ordered a salad with blue cheese, the wife asked for oil and vinegar. Just some run of the mill iceberg tossed with some shredded carrot and a single slice of cucumber. My blue cheese was a flavorless mass of creamy sludge parked right on top. Zero blue cheese flavor. And exactly one little lump of cheese, that was all white, with no veining and no flavor. The oil and vinegar came in some jugs so you could pour your own dressing. The oil was peanut. I think. Maybe canola. Had a slight nutty taste. Definitley not olive oil. Oh, and the salads come in a super authentic German pewter dish with a handle on it. Kind of like a Denny's skillet thing. The Sauerbraten was sour. As advertised. The visual appeal was unappealing. A lump of roasted beef swimming in a sea of brown gravy. All in a wonderful pewter dish. Aside from the sour bite of the beef, which was reflected in the gravy, the dish had nothing else going for it. Zip, nada, nothing. The beef was shaved, cooked well done, and just piled into it's little pewter pool, then set afloat in unremarkable brown goo. Then, there is the Ossobuco. Perhaps I should have looked at the menu. Maybe read up on the dish. But, when I hear Ossobuco, I think veal shanks, slowly braised for hours and hours, until it is just melting. And served with a bit of a gremolata sprinkle over the top. I guess the chef at Friedhelm had a different idea. Now, we waited two hours for dinner. I think that it was due to the fact that my entree was made to order. Who the hell makes Ossobuco to order? Get that stuff in the pot first thing in the morning if you are lazy, or start it the night before to get a really get a good dish. What the hell? It was a shank of animal, served in yet another authentic German pewter skillet, awash in a sea of brown liquid, I assumed was drippings gravy. This was a large shank of lamb. Not veal. It had been braised, and as I began poking at it, discovered that it was tender. It also had no flavor. How the hell do you cook the flavor out of lamb? The gravy was as unremarkable as the lamb was. Just zero flavor. I had to throw a bunch of salt and pepper on it, just to give me something to taste. Really chef? Some herbs maybe? Little onion or garlic in there perhaps? And try to do somthing to make me like the way my dinner looks. Please. This was so dissapointing, I was really really looking forward to this, and after a two hour wait, was let down. So if you want to have some tastless grey lumps of overcooked animal served in a sea of brown liquid, all in pewter skillets, and at about $25.00 a head, this is your place. Otherwise, go elsewhere.

My first real expierience into German cooking was at Friedhelm's. Some friends of ours took us there on our last trip to Fredericksburg. The food was amazing! And for the price, you get an abundance of food. Edward Y must have been there on a bad night, cause when we were there, the jager schnitzel was what I had and was amazing! My wife's food was great as well!
(5)Steve S.
Being a fan of German food, I think this place deserves more credit. I read a hit because they don't serve draft beer, but this is more your fine dining type of German restaurant instead of the festive beer hall type. The schnitzel dishes were perfectly done and very good. The red cabbage was average but also good. My son got a sausage platter that had a pepper wurst on it which was very tasty. The menu didn't say, but I would bet it had some venison in it. The bread was very dark and sweet (homemade with molasses.) They have a good selection of German beers in bottles, but the emphasis is on the food. The inside decor is a little busy, but has a homey feel. The building looks like Bavarian Gasthaus and you can't miss it on the edge of town. Definitely eat at Friedhelm's if you are in Fredericksburg!
(5)Sean R.
We've been to Fredericksburg for 4 years. This is our first time here. Mixed reviews and glad we came. While some people say "dated" decor, it felt open and inviting. The food and service was fantastic. Servings were big. Homemade strudel for desert was great. It will be on our list for a return trip.
(5)Cordelia Y.
This was a interesting restaurant to go too. However, very dark. Dark wood walls, dark carpeting, extremely dark lighting. There were so many doodads on the walls, well sorta thrift store-ish. The food however was pretty good. The schnitzel was great with a variety of different "topping". The potatoes were good, the red cabbage was good, and the spatzel was not so hot. The strudel was just okay. There was hardly anyone in the place. The fun was that the waitresses dressed in "traditional" clothing, again sorta. Felt very 70's. Although, I rated it only 3 stars, we will go again. Hopefully, the schnitzel is as good, as that's what will bring us back.

Ian M and I stumbled into Friedhelm's randomly while looking for some tasty food on our way into Austin. Fredericksburg is this adorably cute little town that has a huge German population and Friedhelm's is amazingly delicious authentic Bavarian German food right in the middle of Texas. The service was good, the place is HUGE, and the food was tasty. It's not cheap, but it is priced fairly for the quality and portion.
(4)Paul S.
You have to have some schnitzel when you stop in Fredericksburg, and no better place with some great German attmosphere than Friedhelm's. Great service too.
(4)Dan D.
I can't understand how this place can call itself authentic. It was recommend by a woman in the Visitor's Center, but I should have known when I saw the place that it isn't authentic. I went with 4 people. One of the persons couldn't even eat the Reuben. I had the Jaegerschnitzel and it was passable. The Sauerbraten was objectionable -- basically sliced roast beef in something like canned gravy. Really bad. The service was horrible. There were literally 7 people in the huge dining room and we waited 30 minutes for the check. We had to get very assertive to get the bill. Try Der Lindenbaum. 9-12-11 Recently found out from a German-Texan living in Fredericksburg that most Germans avoid this place. Some have even gone as far as wishing to have it shut down.
(1)Jim W.
All of my grandparents are German and I'm eating memories when I find a German restaurant. First the stuff that some people may not like. The decor is dated, we were in a room dominated by old beer signs advertising cheap domestic beers. WHY? I did waste a few minutes trying to find a German beer sign, I thought I found one, but Molson is Canadian. The waitress are wearing what Americans think of as traditional German attire. About as accurate as Germans think we all dress like characters from Lonesome Dove. But it's a memory of some of the places we went to in Chicago in the 1970s so I kind of liked it. My wife and I split a plate, the portions are huge. It doesn't really matter what we had. I've spent more at better restaurants and it was better tasting. But this was well into the upper half of the German food I've had in Texas. Some claim the sides are canned, I could believe that, but I'm not going to agree it was terrible. Overall we had a very pleasant dining experience, we spent less than $40, which we felt was a bargain. There are several other places in town we want to visit but I would go back with confidence.
(4)Trista C.
I went with 25 of my friends - TOTALLY screwed up some of the bills after we told them individual checks. Servers seemed very unnerved that we were there. Food was good and fresh and the hostess was very friendly and outgoing.
(2)Wilhelm V.
The wait to be seated was too long as the person was busy putting together and handing out take-away dinners. The further service was very good: contrary to our experience in every other restaurant in the US we were never hurried. There was some time after the drinks were served before we ordered the appetizers; after they had been served, the waiter gave time to sample these before he took our orders for the entrees. That's as it should be. The appetizer [sausages] was tasty. My entree [pork chop] was excellent: not in the least dry but succulent. The side [sauerkraut] had way too much careway seeds, though, completely overpowering the sauerkraut. Mary's fried liver was less fried than boiled: not really good, in a way too watery sauce. What also needs to be improved: there was no German beer on draught, only domestic ones. That's definitely a no-no in a German restaurant.
(4)Kathy L.
This was just off the main strip in Fredericksburg and came after a recommendation. It is a pink building that isn't easily missed. The wait staff is friendly and the inside is larger than it appears. Try to go to the back room if you get an option. Just keep in mind that their portions are very generous! Our whole table got schnitzel and each order comes with bread for the table, soup, salad, and a choice between potatoes, cabbage, and sauerkraut. I had the pepper schnitzel which has the traditional paprika sauce but adds bell peppers and onions on top. The schnitzel was cooked well and their pan fried potatoes are well seasoned. I wish I had the chance to try the cabbage over the sauerkraut. This is a definite go to spot when you're in Fredericksburg. It definitely helped as a break between all the wine drinking!
(4)Michellle E.
Walked in and was definitely concerned that this was not going to be good. Couldn't change the location as we had asked friends to meet us there. Cheesy atmosphere and way overpriced. It smells and is outdated. No one finished their meal and no one took it to go. Skip this place. The prime rib was overcooked and full of tough fat.
(1)Zeke B.
Food was fairly good, if overpriced, but the spatzle was actually cut up pasta. For $20, I deserved more.
(2)Michael E.
The service was very good. The food well let's just say it looks like they have lost it. This was a large group and no one looked very satisfied very bland!!
(2)Hannah G.
This was the worst restaurant experience I have had in a very long time. I was nervous after we walked in and did not get seated for 5 mins (no one was at the front; the place seemed deserted), and the overall smell in the restaurant (old and musty). The decor is outdated, waitresses are dressed up in German attire (cheesy), and the lighting is PINK. I was hopeful after getting the bread and the vegetable soup, but the schnitzel was absolutely terrible. Cold and soggy. I couldn't even force myself to eat it. And not to mention the menu was super overpriced. Please don't waste your time here and avoid this place.
(1)Darrell F.
I am not much of a German food fan, however I was having dinner here w/ about 20 colleagues, it was ......ok to me, no real expectations. Everyone else appeared to like their food and I ordered a nice fat steak cooked to my liking. Job well done.
(3)dave s.
Wurst service ever! But seriously, it was awful. Waited 5 minutes for a hostess even though the place was nearly deserted. Thought maybe it was closed. She finally showed up saying something about her lunch. We waited 15 minutes for a waiter. 10 minutes later we left, still no water or drinks. It was a hot day and we were out riding our Harley. We would have loved some water. $20 for a schnitzel is a bit pricy, but I was looking forward to it. From some of the reviews, I didn't miss anything.
(1)Rosemary W.
What a pleasure to discover such a charming restaurant with delicious Bavarian food ,wonderful waitstaff ,delightful ambience , especially Sarah! Welcome to a wonderful dining experience!
(5)Summer G.
We had the cheese schnitzel and sausage plate appetizer and the roast beef plate. Our sides were the red cabbage and saurcraut. It was fantastic! Great portion size. Friendly service. All of the food was delicious. We'll be back again soon.
(5)Julie C.
I had never tried "homemade" German food, but was this the perfect choice for a first time! My family had 4 different schnitzel's and we loved all of them! Could not be a better place to eat German food but from Friedhelm's in Fredericksburg,Tx!
(5)JoAnn H.
Wow, this place had the best German food of any we tried in Fredericksburg. Each dinner comes with a very tasty cabbage soup which we found that if you wanted just soup, you can get a big bowl of it . We had the cheese Schnitzel that was the best I've had outside of Munich. Cannot go wrong here
