An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Health department has been notified. Temp on ALL food on Sunday brunch cold. Note if you want to go to the hospital. Then grab your friends and eat the Sunday brunch buffet. Even the mamosa was warm. Come on people!! oh as far as the star. There wasn't a negative margin

First Impressions: "Nestled" in a strip adjacent to the mall, there's nothing fancy about the outside, which doesn't quite prepare you for the kitschy interior. Upon entering we were greeted by the hostess and a hippie jamming classic rock on his acoustic guitar. All this left me feeling a bit uneasy, but previous reviews said this was the place to check out for restaurant style Mexican. Food Impressions: Upon being seated we were served decent chips and a pair of salsas, one which had no discernible spice and one that was mildly spiced. I was able to get an horchata, which made me happier and the menu looked decent. I ordered the carnitas and my wife ordered a couple a la carte items. While we were waiting for our food, I asked if they had any salsa picante, Cholula, or Valentina; things definitely changed after that. They brought out a trio of amazing salsas, a flavorful and spicy chipotle, a hot salsa verde, and a medium hot salsa roja (as well as the bottled salsas). The rest of our food came out looking great and they offered homemade tortillas, which I gladly accepted. My carnitas were tender with a perfect amount of fat on them. The fried beans were of the pastier variety and had a good amount of chunkiness to them. The rice was typical; nothing special but not bad either. My wife's tamal was covered in a nice looking adobo; I didn't bother tasting because my portion was already huge. Final thoughts: El Meson is a solid Mexican restaurant with good food and great prices and service. Be sure to ask for the hot salsas up front.

After a big feature article in Times Free Press Dining Guide came out about their creative new menu to debut in spring, we waited until end of June to eat there. Didn't see ANY of the new items on the menu. Asked the waitress who giggled and said, "Oh that was just stuff people made up." Made up story about new menu, made up new dishes? She never said. The food was the same old same old, every thing with rice and beans, rice and beans. Went back to the feature story I had saved, new menu sounded great. Maybe would set you apart from the multiple Mexican restaurants we have.

If you want better food don't order the regular burrito and taco fair get adventurous and go for the unique dishes you will be rewarded!

Hit or miss. Sometimes it's great, sometimes just okay. They almost always mess up at least part of our order. They're always happy to fix it but it's frustrating when everybody else is finished eating when you get your food because they messed up your order. Service is also hit or miss - sometimes it's great and sometimes it's really awful. They have live music at least a couple times a week. The music is typically one dude with a guitar and an amplifier. It's much too loud, you really can't talk over it and the quality of the music is terrible. A dude who is playing an acoustic guitar that looks like Tom Petty but sounds much worse should not be singing "Baby's Got Back" - ever. I recommend avoiding the days they have live music like the plague. I also recommend checking your takeout order before leaving if you call one in. Mine has never ever ever been correct when I've gone to pick it up. Maybe they can't hear me over the live music.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. I find the quality of the food to be better here than other similar places, and they offer good food for every price range. Some days when my husband and I feel like going out (but probably shouldn't), we come here, eat a lot of chips and salsa, and get cheap burritos smothered in delicious Mexican white cheese. We never have a serious problem with the service, but the live music is too loud for my liking-even if it's good. No one wants to come to dinner and have to lean over the table and yell. Great place for lunch any day though!

This is a nice Mexican restaurant that isn't exactly like every other Mexican restaurant you've ever been to. It's not 100% authentic but it's close. They have a lot if the same things but they have a page completely reserved for tacos and building your own authentic style Mexican taco. Ask for various salsas and hot sauces, they have a few to choose from and all pretty authentic. Their food is really tasty and the atmosphere is cozy. We went on a Friday night and actually enjoyed the acoustic guitar player in contrast to other harsh comments about him. The place wasn't packed (it was a cold, rainy night) but had a cool group of patrons that made the night fun. Server was okay, got our orders right and kept my drinks filled but didn't see her for 10 minute intervals. All in all it was a positive experience, we will return for dinner for sure and to hear the great tunes sung from an aspiring folk/classic guitarist. A+ business.

Having eaten at the Hamilton palace location, I had high expectations for our Father's Day dinner. We were promptly watered and received chips and two salsas. Two of us ordered fajitas. One ordered a shrimp dish. We ordered one child's order of pizza to share between two small children. There was a significant wait for the food. The chips were light and good tasting. However the salsas were both bland and lacked anything "special." When the food arrived, the children's pizza was cold and we were not provided the requested second plate. The fajitas were not sizzling and the meat was also cool. The meat did have a good flavor and was pretty tender. However, the tortillas were missing. It took over 5 minutes to get them and the fajitas were even colder. The shrimp were overcooked, cold and tough. The rice was fluffy but no wow. Beans were ok as well. Both the service and the food were subpar for El Meson. It will be. A very long time before we return.

El Meson has gone a little downhill since I started eating there. They've lost of a lot of their good servers and their new hires aren't nearly as pleasant or friendly. They now have really terrible live music there on Friday nights... it's so bad that if I wind up going on a Friday night (usually because my friends want to go), I insist that we sit outside so we don't have to listen to the one-man band. Fortunately, the food is still pretty decent. I usually get the Pollo Meson. Be sure to ask for some free tortillas to go with it, otherwise you're eating it with a fork.
