A perfect little coffee shop: free (with purchase) wifi, high booths with outlets, a good number of tables and chairs, a couple soft couches and old soft chairs, hardwood floor, some old books, a few games, friendly service and great coffee! Haven't tried any food though.

Great coffee (with refills). I also had the baked oatmeal which was great but a little spendy at $5 for a small portion.

This is the best place in Brookings to grab a coffee. I always get the dark to go. It's flavorful and always smooth. The baristas are super nice and low key. The last time we were there, the milk pitcher and sugar bowl were both simultaneously empty. Oh the horror of it all! Luckily they were able to refill them both in a timely fashion and a crisis was narrowly averted. Thank you for consistently serving great coffee and having such a nice crew.

I wanted to like this place, I truly did. $7 for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is highway robbery. The atmosphere is a little too sparse to be funky and eclectic, too run down to be minimalist. It just feels unkempt and shabby. Invest in the upkeep (especially if you're charging $7 for PB&J). Well worn is one thing but I get the feeling of just plain old deferred maintenance walking in here (the sign is peeling from the plywood it was painted on and barely readable, for example). I've given this place 3 chances because I really want a cozy place to drink some tea, eat an overpriced snack, and maybe get some work done for an hour but all three times, the wifi has been out and no one bothered to mention that as I was standing at the register ordering with my laptop/tablet/etc in hand. So no cozy, and no work. Makes me sad. The concept is great (who doesn't love a little coffee shop) but the prices do not reflect the atmosphere or the quality of product.

Cottonwood Coffee (and its companion, the Bistro) is, without a doubt, my favorite place in Brookings. I love everything about this place: the food, the drinks, the servers, the atmosphere, the music, and the decor. Let me talk about the menu first. They have a lot of creative drink choices (Zebra Mocha, or my favorite, the London Fog), and fun paninis (PB&J&BANANA!). They also make some GREAT espresso drinks (and there's soy milk! woohoo!). When I'm not in the mood for the "Hot Hanna Banana" sandwich, I usually go for the soup. Every day, they have at least one (but usually two) freshly made soups to choose from. I've never had one I didn't like. Some frequent options include: Chicken and Wild Rice, Cream of Asparagus, Tomato with Garlic Scape Pesto, Broccoli Cheddar, and my favorite, Tomato Florentine. It comes with fresh bread from Buttercrust Bakery, and it's the perfect meal during bitter South Dakota winters! The atmosphere is wonderful. I've been known to spend 5+ hours here at a time, and I'm not ashamed to admit it! The tables are big and roomy, so it's easy to share a booth with a friend when you're both using laptops. The music is very chill and never too loud. The artwork around the room is always unique and eye-catching; it updates every couple of months with new work from local artists (often students from SDSU). I'm pretty sure most of the work that's up is actually for sale, and it lists the artists and their phone numbers underneath. Finally, the service is great. There are several baristas that I've come to adore so much that I get sad when I don't see them working. Many of the workers here are easy to chat with and are just genuinely cool people. They are always wonderfully and sincerely polite! I've also had great success with these employees when it comes to drink recommendations. Whenever I don't know what to order, I just give them some general guidelines, and they either find the perfect drink for me from the menu, or come up with a custom drink to try out, and it's always spot on! Bravo, Cottonwood! You will always be the place I run to first when I visit dear old Brookings. :)

Nice little gourmet shop on main in brookings! Best thing about these guys is they roast their own beans IN THE SHOP!!! That's awesome! Prices are phenomenal! I'm visiting from LA and I picked up 12oz whole bean to send to a buddy up north and 6oz ground to enjoy on my stay here plus a to go cup of drip coffee and my total was under 20 bucks!!! Support local guys! If it weren't for shops like this we'd all be drinking no good, mass marketed, giant batch roasted, coffee! Support the local guys, brookings is fortunate to have this shop here! Now go pick up a red eye!

updated... I can't come here anymore because the wifi is too spotty. I'm sorry but please buy a real wireless router that can handle more than 5 connections. There is nothing more frustrating than ZERO wireless connection when you need to study or relax. The atmosphere is really nice if it's not too busy and you can get a booth.

Very good coffee and casual atmosphere! WiFi can be spotty but it seems to connect after awhile.

Excellent latte! I was really surprised by the very high quality of coffee here. The orange-cardamom pound cake slice I had was also very good. This is the "hipster" café in this small town that I am visiting. Everybody was using the wifi.
