Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

The Villa has long been a favorite for me over the years (yes even more than 25 years ago). Recently we revisited and they have remodeled and updated the interior and the food is still excellent. I like my food "my way" and they are always willing to accommodate. You haven't lived until you've had their greek salad and add apiece of parmesan encrusted chicken to the top! Thanks Villa!!

I am really being king giving it one star. I heard someone tell me it was pretty good for Italian food. Well apparently they had their tongue cut out before they ate there. I walked in , and no one sat me. I can live with that, first thing I noticed was the atmosphere (lighting, ambiance) was like a morgue. I sat down on a table with a forty five year old table cloth. She brings me a menu and its clearly devoid of the basic necessities of any Italian restaurant. No soup on the menu, no pizza by the slice, no calamari, nothing that looked interesting. I saw the "italian mushroom toast" . Okay that looks different so I ordered with an overpriced Antipasto that had cheddar and pepper jack cheese on it (not an antipasto). I also ordered a small (totino's) pizza, what they call the Villa special. Okay so the antipast was swimming in italian dressing, but turned out to be the best thing I ate. Then she brings out the "italian" mushroom toast (disgusting),, buttery greasy bread with raw mushrooms, lousy tomato sauce and american cheese on top. I mentioned to the guy at the register how bad it was no response. The pizza came out i was like are you serious for 7.25 you opened up a box of totino's pizza and shoved it in the oven. Overall the place is a disgrace to my Italian heritage. I could cook in there and turn that joint over and make it better. Clearly no one cared so i do pray new ownership takes over or they shut down.

This is a great little authentic Italian restaurant. Don't expect white tablecloths, this place is definitely a family place and very old school. The spaghetti, lasagna, chicken parm and menu items are all excellent and homemade. They make everything from scratch. You get salad and garlic or french bread with an entree. The pizza is not the best here, the crust is hard not soft, so hard to find good pizza in this town!! The plain cheesecake is the real mccoy, best cheesecake in Columbia hands down. Don't leave this restaurant without a slice to go! I prefer the plain cheesecake it is very authentic. The inexpensive Chianti is pretty good and you can order by half carafe. Great prices and good food!! I get a kick out of the decor, old red and white check tablecloths and murals on the wall. It is a little bit like stepping back in time. If you like the real deal--try it out!!

The Villa is a Italian restaurant in the Dutch Square area in Columbia, SC. When I first moved to Columbia I remember hearing people say this place was good. Time though hasn't been kind to The Villa, I think you could call the place an Italian dive which is rare. It was a slow Thursday night at The Villa, yet I still had to seat myself and get my own menu. There was only 5 groups of people at the resturant but the wait staff seemed utterly overwhelm. I couldn't help observing everything around me. The dècor hadn't been updated since Nixon was in The White House. I also noticed that no one in the kitchen seemed to care about the food, the manager looked as if he wanted to end it all right here right now and hang himself from one of the 60's era ceiling lamps and the wait staff look as if they would've watched eagerly. 7 minutes later someone came over and took our order. I had a small sausage pizza and my girlfriend had the spaghetti with meat sauce and mushrooms. Everything came out fast maybe a little to fast... The sauce was just the way she liked it, thick and not runny. However I thought it tasted the way my pizza tasted generic. The pizza was a thin crust, which I usually love and god bless them they have shredded sausage which is my favorite topping. So why does it taste so generic? I had to ask, I talked to a cook that has worked for The Villa for 15 years. I was told The Villa doesn't make anything from scratch anymore, they use a food service called Roma. Roma is commonly used in Italian restaurants, and does have decent products and I've liked there stuff else where. With that said you have to do something to the products add something of yourself. WTF, you have a butcher in back of your place use their meats! It's not Roma's fault your food is just average. I would tell you to go else where, but where? There isn't another Italian restaurant within 15 miles, and no chain restaurants don't count. The closest good Italian restaurant is out by Lake Murray (Alodia's). So quick I need an Italian restaurant on this side of town stat, or at the very least new management at The Villa someone that still has a fire in his or her belly. Bottom line if you want a cheap night out The Villa has it, was only $15.00 for everything we ordered, but not terribly good either! PS: If you do go even after that review you might want to bring three things with you. First, a gas mask the butcher in back of the place makes the parking lot smell foul. Second, some night vision goggles it's dark in there! Third, maybe some seventies clothing, take a trip in time! For the love of god look at their website. Not a single photo of food are you a restaurant or an art gallery, based on your food I think the later would be better. thevillaonbushriver.com/…

The pizza is OK, but I'm not a big fan of crispy crust.

Everyone said it was good and, when I finally made my way over to it, it was packed full of coworkers, but I wasn't that impressed. I ordered chicken parmigiana with minestrone soup and coffee (plus, later, got the amaretto cheese cake). My first cup of coffee arrived half-full, which was gone in 2 good sips. After 5-7 minutes of waiting, I finally asked a passing waitress for a refill. Then the soup arrived, but it was lacking any flavor. That, and the beans were hard, like they weren't soaked/cooked properly. After the soup, I had to wait several more minutes before I could ask for a refil on the coffee (even though they came to take my soup bowl away, he never asked if I would like more or returned with a carafe). The chicken parmigiana was just a bonless chicken breast on a bed of noodles, covered with sauce. The chicken wasn't breaded or fried/baked, and the entire dish was pretty bland. The cheesecake was ok, but very tiny. For $18 (plus tip), I was a bit disappointed and should probably give it less than a 3...

The Villa is a long standing institution here in Columbia. Inside it's dark dining room, lies some delicious Italian food, great craft beer list, and fine wines (and cheap ones if that is your thing). I use to eat at the Villa when there was one in 5 points way back, so there is definitely a nostalgia aspect for me. My wife is a lasagna connoisseur and the Villa's is in her top 5. The spaghetti & meatballs with meat sauce is good. The meat Manicotti is great for sausage lovers. Homemade salad dressings. Villa Italian sandwich isn't bad either. Had it for lunch once. Not the best, but better than lots of the chain places. Great place for an Italian meal that will not break the bank...

Wish I could give a better review, but I never received my salad & my friend's after waiting for 50 minutes at lunch. Waited an additional 20 minutes to try and flag down a waitress, but none ever appeared. The restaurant was hopping, and I overheard others complain about the wait as well. Even on our way out, we couldn't locate anyone but the pizza cooks to say we're departing. The atmosphere was very dark which I guess some would call romantic, but it felt dungeon like.

Went last night with some friends, and to say it was bad would be misusing the word bad. First I ordered their pizza it makes a Red Baron look good...prefab pizza crust (and not even a good one, makes cardboard taste appetizing) For a pizza that cost $18, wow is all I can say. My friends got the Fettuccine Alfredo, $3 extra for chicken (about 6 very small pieces), and $1.75 for mushrooms, found maybe 3) was insane, and the sauce was watery and bland. Avoid this place if you want to eat decent Italian! I would suggest going to Olive Garden before going to the Villa! (and I don't care for Olive Garden that much either).

I have gone to this restaurant many times. The food is good and it is a great place to meet for lunch. HOWEVER, the last two times I have gone the service has been abysmal....lack of attention from the waitress, messed up orders, slowness of service. And then when I checked out the guy checking us out didn't say a SINGLE WORD. Wow. I'm going to try it once more, but if the experience is the same with the staff, then it will be my last time!

Good food for a great price. Great for when you don't want fast food taste and still get your order fast. Staff is super friendly and nice. I love the Italian sub. The atmosphere is quite nice as well. Not too dark, not too bright.

This is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Columbia! I love their salad & cheese manacotti! The low lighting makes it a perfect date night spot.

Stopped in with a friend last week and enjoyed chicken parmigiana. It was fresh and delicious. Also went back and got take out another night and was able to eat dinner and then lunch the next day. Quality neighborhood restaurant at a reasonable price.

The food here is of such low quality that, simply by eating here, you have been insulted by the cooks who obviously don't think your dining experience is worth any effort on their part. Save your money and make hamburger helper at home if you want something of equal (or better) quality. Or, if you want good Italian, go to Rosso.

I've been eating at the Villa since 1994. It is a treasure to say the least. The food is consistently good, the prices are great and the servers are always attentive. I also love the fact that someone who runs the restaurant enjoys good quality beer. My husband and I frequent the Villa about once a month or so. As a matter of fact, I am ordering take-out from there tonight! The pizza, the spaghetti and the lasagna are our favorites.

I wanted to try a new restaurant and based on their website ( thevillaonbushriver.com ) The Villa looked promising, so I went there on a Saturday evening together with three friends. Unfortunately, the whole experience turned into a bit of a letdown! The Villa is not much to look at from the outside, which makes you wonder how they came up with that grand name, and the inside is not much better. The interior is dated and the lighting is absolutely horrible. (A bit of natural light would have done the place good, because right now the place feels like a nuclear shelter.) The menu looks promising and the price is right, but unfortunately the dishes are uninspired. The appetizer 'Three Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms' tasted bland and the 'Veal Parmigiana' was not much better. I cannot say the food was really bad, the spaghetti was cooked very well and the meat sauce was nice, but it definitely is not worth a drive to Bush River Road. As far as service goes, the place seemed understaffed by (at least) one person, which resulted in a bit of a wait. The lady that waited our table was friendly, but not very efficient. Conclusion? I do not regret dining at The Villa, but I definitely will not return. Moreover, I do not recommend the place to anybody. (If I recommend it to you, then that probably means I do not like you.)
