Not really a fan of this place, although everyone seems to worship it. The lines for coffee are very long and move at a snails pace- not to get the coffee, but just to even order and pay. Seating is kind of limited as well. My friend and I ordered a sandwich with a side salad each and it took 45 minutes to get our food and the place was not even that crowded on that particular date. The salad (Greek/Mediterranean) was decent but the sandwich was very plain. I haven't had the coffee but I don't think it will really change my mind. They do have a regular set of customers, as I often see the same people walking by. I would be willing to give it another chance but there's not really anything to entice me to come back.

Perfect little place behind the State House. Incredible coffee. The Tuna Salad is made with yogurt instead of mayo so it is lite and reduced fat, but still very tasty. Forget Starbucks, this coffee is house roasted and amazing. Don't forget to take a pound home!

Great coffee but the large cup is a little small for me. I like getting the coffee beans from downstairs so I can take them home. Nice vibe here and there are a lot of students and others on their computers.

I agree with one of the other yelpers, that this is one of those whole in the wall places. For the longest time when The Nick was still at their old location, I never knew what this place was (as there was not any signage out telling you what this place was) and place always looked closed during the evenings. Not crowded on a Saturday afternoon. Did seem like there was not too much to choose from sandwich wise. Liked how they gave yo cards from a deck of cards to indicate your order (versus a number). Nothing overly the top that would make me go to unless I was doing something in the area.

Love this place. It can get super crowded at times, and during lunch can take bit of a wait for your food. But it's all worth it because they have magic pasta salad! I have tried times over to re-create that pasta salad to no avail. Smoked turkey veggie is my favorite. When it's soup season, it's on. Best tomato basil soup in town. Also, best iced mochas in town. They use powdered Ghiradelli chocolate and blend it. (No crappy syrup I have to stir in with my straw.) Those mochas are amazing. So amazing that almost every day mid morning I go and get one. If you're in a hurry, best to call ahead and place your order. Even if you're standing right outside on the sidewalk.

Immac is one of the few hole in the wall type coffee shops left in Columbia. They are usually crowded with students, USC faculty and staff, lawmakers, and other state workers who are within walking distance. They have pretty good prices on lunch, which has a creative selection of soups, salads and sandwiches. For a more secluded lunch, though noisy from the creaking floor, head downstairs to the basement. Good vegetarian options, and I can't comment in the coffee since I haven't had any from there in a while.

By far my favorite lunch and coffee café in Columbia. The Consumption salad is extraordinary and healthy. The sandwiches are great and can all be made on a pita if you like. Also, do not miss the chocolate chip cookies. The staff is mostly professional and overall friendly. My one complaint is their hours. They have been inconsistent about being open on Saturday, and are not open past 6 PM. I wish that I could visit and utilize the café later in the day.

As a coffee snob, retired barista, barista trainer..... yada e yada; only 'good' espresso spot I know of in Columbia. Follow up: I did have 1 foul espresso drink. Training and employee belief in the craft plays a big part. Training is always a tough aspect to maintain with service industry. I took home a bag of beans.... WoW... good beans.

I don't drink coffee so I can't review their selection, but their breakfast is decent, as is their lunch. I haven't experienced anything amazing here, but it's a consistently good option for sandwiches and salads.

According to Google Maps, I am 2,688 miles from Immaculate, or 43 hours of cross-country bleary-eyed cruising (dare you to find me), and all I want to do is remember the Rox Chick Salad Sandwich. However the hell you spell it. The marinated chicken--chunks, not shredded. The roasted peppers. The sliver or two of avocado. The cherry tomatoes. The sliced almonds. The provolone, I think it is, some kind of white, gooey cheese. A splash of tabasco. And the Immaculate signature, green apples! All wrapped in a warm is-it-homemade? pita and served with a heaping of their pasta salad. This pasta salad has no comparisons. A touch of balsamic in that basil vinagrette and served warm. Get. It. Now. If not, go for the palo verde special, the turkey green apple, anything with their horseradish sauce, or the gazpacho; for breakfast let those stone-ground grits warm you up; and for anytime, get a wonderful espresso drink or spaz out on mug after mug of some deep, soul stirring coffee. Sit down. Enjoy the reclaimed pews for seating, the wood, the high ceilings, the hip music and staff, and the murmur of folk loving life.

The blended mocha coffee ( I think that's what it's called) was really good. It wasn't a sugar bomb like Starbucks fraps. The down stairs atmosphere makes it a good spot to chill with your friends during the day. I haven't tried their food items yet but when I do I will give another review for the food.

Great lunches crafted from local, fresh ingredients. Though, I wish there were more creative sandwich menu options for us non-meat eaters... plain veggies on bread doesn't cut it.

An awesome local eatery and coffee roasters in town! It doesn't get more authentic than this... very good food and service. Try the Horsey Turkey if you like horseradish.

This coffee shop has great sandwiches, soups and salads! They roast the coffee there and everything tastes homemade. I eat here at least once a week and would especially recommend whatever happens to be the special of the day. Some Wednesdays they have Bahn Mi sandwiches and they are amazing. The Greek salad (add smoked turkey) is a staple of mine. The pasta salad side is beloved by everyone who is a regular and the Senegalese peanut soup is outstanding. The atmosphere is cozy - some of the seating is made up of old church pews. The line can be slow, but food comes out of the kitchen at a good rate. I can always get in and out during my lunch hour. One of my all time lunch favs!

This is solely based on my experience with their coffee. I asked the barista if they did pour overs and she seemed confused. Then, I asked if they served a traditional cappuccino and once again she seemed confused. In need of caffeine, I ordered a cappuccino despite my better judgement. I tasted it and didn't drink anymore. The espresso tasted stale and over roasted. Based on the other yelp reviews I was pretty disappointed.

Very good, but not a five. It is a lunch counter with a nice variety of sandwiches. One of the best in the downtown area. If you work in the area, if you haven't tried it, you should. It clearly beats of the franchise outlets for quick lunch.

Best coffee destination in town! Small roaster in the basement roasts what they serve in the cafe, so the coffee is incredibly fresh and smooth. I appreciate that they regularly offer a variety of coffees from around the world: every day they have an African, Central American, a Pacific Island variety, and some sort of blend. The ambiance is pretty cool, too. Most of the booths are constructed from old church pews (hence the "Immaculate") and, if you're curious, you can check out the roaster downstairs.

Best Ice coffee in town - they cold brew it. They also roast their own beans - you can check out the equipment in their downstairs seating. This is definitely not as study friendly as some of the other shops because it's usually filled with professionals (it's right across the street from the state house) and the hours are limited. The food is pretty good - the brunch is very good! They have a few tables outside when it's nice out and the walk from the horse shoe is a nice break from school!

This place was very very good. The interior is very laid back, with re-used church pews serving as seating for tables and local artists works on the wall for purchase. I had the turkey croissant and my wife had the special which was kind of like a tuna salad in sandwich form, and she also raved about it. The staff was very polite, and had recommendations based on your tastes. The place is also great for sitting and reading or people watching, as you get all types in here for a bite to eat or a coffee. They have coffee as well as a fridge with a small beer / juice / pop selection. I was really excited to see they had Jarritos, but they were out of mandarin so I settled for an Anchor Summer Steam instead. A great place to grab a bite and a drink before the matinee at the Nick (before it moves).

L-O-V-E this place. Great atmosphere and their amazing coffee is roasted on site. I love their Ring-of-Fire blend hence the purchase of five pounds of this bean for the trek back to OH. The food (sandwiches and baked goods) are very tasty. Rob and his staff are fantastic and accomodating which makes this a great place to hang out and relax. It doesn't get any better than this when in the downtown area of Columbia, SC.

Drove to Columbia today to try this place for lunch. Had Scott's chicken salad sandwich. They use oil instead of mayonnaise and it makes a huge difference in taste. Also, it's served warm instead of cold. Nothing like it no where. The pasta salad side was highly touted by other Yelpers and it was outstanding. Lots of students at USC eat here so you know it's affordable. We loved it and will return.

Sadly we don't have many true coffee shops in Insanely Hot Columbia, but this is one of the few. Located near the State House, this place serves great coffee and has friendly baristas. Most college-area coffee shops play bad music, have crappy 'art work' on the wall and douchey baristas that couldn't get hired on at Starbucks, but this is not that place!

This place was dead empty for lunch when I came in. I should have taken that as a sign. I ordered the turkey and apple as suggested by the other reviews. It took too long, the side I wanted was not there and was a small portion size for the price with somewhat stale bread. In its defense it seems like a nice meeting place and has shaded outdoor seating.

Immaculate Consumption is a great local coffee roaster and they make a few excellent lunch offerings. I only wish they had longer hours! My favorite there is the turkey and green apple sandwich with brie. It is delicious and I never stray from this item no matter how tempting the rest of the menu looks.

Great coffee and pastries. Haven't tried the rest of their menu. It's nice and quiet too, so good place to work, study, or have a conversation. The downside: I have yet to meet someone who works there who knows how to smile. Also, parking is limited, and sitting downstairs ensures privacy, but you'll hear every step taken on the floor above. Not open at night.

Good food, lots of drink selections and a nice atmosphere, but it's a little pricey and they have banker's hours. Good luck ever eating here if you have a regular job: they're closed at 6 on weekdays and on weekends. I am not sure how they stay open when they are almost never open... I prefer going to Cool Beans because they are always open.

This is my favorite place in Columbia for regular brewed coffee. I usually judge places based on their coffee, since most of the time that's my favorite thing to buy, and even more often it's the only thing I can afford. Immac has quality, delicious coffee that goes well with anything. The few real meals I have eaten there have been enjoyable, with a surprising option of pasta on the side that is warm and delicious. The atmosphere is nice, and there is a crazy busy lunch rush during everyone's lunch break. I have studied for many exams here. Although it gets loud, it is somehow relaxing, and I always get a lot of work done. The interior is fun and interesting. I wish they had mugs for dine-in coffee, because I hate drinking out of styrofoam when I don't have to, but other than that no complaints!

I'm so glad my cousin took me here for lunch over the weekend! The interior is so eclectic and homey. I love the wooden feel, and there are photos everywhere of good friends who seem to run/own the whole place. It's fun to see the people in the photos working in front of your very eyes! The service is quick, the coffee is great (roasted in-house, downstairs where there is extra seating), the food is delicious. I ordered the Turkey Green Apple sandwich, which comes with a side of your choice (kettle chips, pasta, etc) and a pickle. The sandwich itself had REAL turkey meat (shredded), white cheddar, green apple slices, lettuce and tomato (I think). It was toasted just enough that the sourdough bread was crispy and the cheddar was melted. I got pasta as my side, and DAMN was it good!! You get a generous portion of whole wheat penne pan-tossed in olive oil, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. The place gets pretty busy during lunchtime, as many businessmen/women hit the place up during break. You can call in to order and pick up if you're in a hurry.

Best espresso drinks in Columbia, perhaps anywhere, as well as the best atmosphere of any cafe I've ever spent time in. This place is unfortunately only open on weekdays, 7:30 to 6, to cater to the university and state house crowd, and has a different unique special sandwich every day. Try the Bahn Mi if it's the right day, their version of a Vietnamese street sandwich. Amazing. Their salads are big, the pasta salad with fresh made garlicky balsamic vinaigrette and parmesan is sooo good, their soups (during cooler weather only) are different every day and delicious. My favorites from their menu are the Roast Beef Gorgonzola (add horseradish sauce, yum!), the Consumption Salad (comes with turkey, ham, roast beef, or tailored to your request), the Greek Salad, and their Tuna Salad. All of their dressings are made in house. Unlike another reviewer, I have an intense affection for their occasional sardine and tuna sandwich special, and I think a lot of other people do, too, since it's always sold out before their lunch hour is over. Try their Americano or their iced latte for a taste of how special this place is. All coffee is roasted on-site and can be bought ground or whole bean, though they run out quickly. Unlike most cafes, the espresso extraction process is on display for all to see, though sometimes their ancient espresso machine seems on the verge of dying altogether. Seems like much of the staff has been there for years and knows just about everyone who walks in the door. During lunch expect a wait, but know that it's worth it. Call ahead to grab and go. My biggest criticism by far is that they close so early and aren't open on weekends. Insane considering they're next door to an amazing theater who doesn't start showing until 7pm. Can't you guys at least stay open an hour later?

This place would make a killing if it had reasonable hours, especially with The Nick right next to it. Closed on weekends and only open till 6 (with food closing down at around 3), those are not reasonable hours. Especially when this place has the best fucking food I've had here thus far. This place makes one hell of a salad. I'm talking the Chix Salad plate here people. Can we say fresh veggies? Fresh chicken? Fresh chicken salad not soaked in mayonnaise? Yes, yes, and yes. And their frozen mocha. Dear God, a real fucking frozen coffee drink. Not some powdery starbucks imitation, but actually shots of espresso, milk, and chocolate tossed into a blender with ice. Go here, stand in the massive food line (there's a reason, as i've elaborated, why it's massive) and get a frozen mocha, a scone, and something to eat. You'll be glad for it.

Does the review of someone who has been to a restaurant more than a couple hundred times count more or less than a regular review? Out of the hundreds of sandwiches I've eaten at Immaculate, I've only had one bad experience: the tuna and sardines special. If they ever have it again and you partake, it will be the single fishiest experience of your life. All other items are excellent, with special nods to anything with their honey mustard on a croissant(such as the smoked Virginia ham and cheese) and the absurdly meaty consumption salad. DO NOT EAT THE FISH SANDWICH.
