Solid choice for both atmostphere and location. The rooftop bar is pretty nice on a summer night and you'll get lots of the giant tv screens. Food is fine, nothing to really strongly write home about, but it'll do for an ale house. Service could be a bit better, but if you just want to chill, this is a good choice.

Bad service on the rooftop. Sat down one waitress ignored me 2 times, the other waiter ignored me too. Finally, got my own menu and another customer at a diff table had to ask his waiter to give me service. This waiter then gave some story about not waiting to steal a coworkers table. Seriously? Even after getting my food had to get the salt & pepper myself from another table. I wont go back.

I've been here a good number of times and the best thing I've had on their menu is the hot spinach dip! It is divine. Everything else I've had has just tasted like good bar food. If you go, the place to sit (if its a nice day) is the upstairs rooftop bar. I went at five thirty on a monday and it was still really crowded. Worth the trip for happy hour and appetizers!
(3)Chris K.
Sat on the rooftop outside. Not a bad meal but great atmosphere.

This review is for the location in Irmo. Yet another stop in our quest to discover if we could live in Columbia, an early Sunday lunch. We were the first ones here and it being 11 on a Sunday we didn't sample any of the beer. Hubby said the sweet tea was lovely and his Cesar salad was good but my turkey pits sandwich was pretty disgusting and I really wasn't thrilled with his chicken fingers. Service was good, but we were the first ones there. I think that the bar is probably pretty happening during games but alas we missed the action. Probably won't go back but it was a passable lunch spot.

Walked over for lunch today with some co-workers. Atmosphere was ok, but with a name like Carolina Ale House, I guess I was expecting a little more ambiance. It felt just like every Applebees, Ruby Tuesdays, Smokey Bones, etc I've ever been in; open the box and you're ready for business. Food was average, at best. My fries were cold and the "blue cheese" dressing for my buffalo chicken breast sandwich was mayonnaise with what *may* have been a few chunks of blue cheese. The bun didn't taste fresh, either, and the lady with us who got the crab cake sandwich was also saying something about the bun she got. Prices were ok but the waiter seemed less than thrilled to be of service (and the place was pretty empty, at that).

Just went to Columbia for a work trip and took my buddies here for dinner... Great food, great atmosphere, and friendly service. I have to admit, it was a Tuesday night so we didn't a lot of fellow costumers to compete with...
(4)Angi J.
Really don't deserve a star at all. Two members of staff looked me in the face and still did my acknowledge, nor serve me. Definitely not going back.
(1)Talib K.
It's a frat-boy beer bar...only the frat-boys are out of college with real jobs and incomes. The crowd here tends to be 30+. I went because they have "beer " in the name. I was pleasantly surprised to find a half decent tuna sandwich on the menu. And more importantly, they have $2 drafts daily! Love the Ale House! If you like inexpensive beer, sports that matter on tv, cougars in training, and the freaky frat boys that love them......go here.

This place was great! I came here for Family Weekend when I was visiting my sister and my family really enjoyed it. It was a game day, so it was a great place to get amped up for the game. I loved all of the Clemson and South Carolina memorabilia and all of the TVs set up with ALL the college games on. The food was really good. My dad raved about the baked potato soup and my mom loved the chicken noodle soup. For my meal I had sweet tea (really good) and the Greek Pizette. It was a little bigger than a personal pan pizza and covered with feta, chicken, tomatoes, Alfredo sauce....it was REALLY good. The pizza can be split. It is perfectly baked with a thin and crispy crust, so it isn't heavy. I would definitely come here again next time at USC.

When on the road I lean on my friends at Yelp to locate a good local restaurant to patron. I found the Carolina Ale House by accident and it was just what I needed after arriving in town at 8pm. Nothing outstanding, just another college sports bar/pub with a decent burger. The plus was that they did have a great selection of beer to go along with my dinner. Kristen was my server and she was jovial and inviting but could tell it was towards the end of your shift.
(3)Rosalie M.
Pub burger is amazing. All the burgers are good. Good atmosphere with friendly bartenders and waiters/waitresses. My type of place for any time of the day
(5)TJ R.
The food is pretty good, I really like their burgers and fries. Best of all the service outside or inside is great. And you can't beat the happy hour prices.

For some reason, a lot of people in some of my circles really love this place. I do not. We only ever go there for after-hours, late night bar hang-out, but it always feels way too much like a restaurant and not enough like a bar, even on the rooftop (the only place we hang out). You're always in the way no matter where you stand because there's not enough standing/hang out room. Servers with trays of food are always squeezing around you, trying to get by. It's probably a great place to go to watch sports, since they have tons of seating space and lots of large tvs (including a projector outside), but I would not recommend it at all for a general group hang out. Service is usually fine, busy but attentive considering.

~ya seen one ya seen em all~ This is a clone of a million other sports bar restaurants. You love one, you love them all :) Location!, location!, location! This is the plus factor this restaurant really promotes, and well so. The upstairs bar and patio is a nice little cozy hangout, really gives it the intimate neighborhood feel! A few pool tables, fairly good size bar, LOTS of big screen TVs, and, overlooking Lady street, a good sized patio with tables and umbrellas. - This place is on the verge of being ginormous- the waitress said they had a reservation for a party of 80??? Wowza! The food here is typical for this type of restaurant- nachos, burgers, pizzas...They have steaks and seafood on the menu- might be better to save your money for a cold one here?? The selection of draft and bottled beer is probably about average, about 30 of each-all the favorites. The service is spotty. Sometimes, I believe, people work at a place and get comfortable with the surroundings and assume you are just as comfortable- hello, I don't know whats upstairs, I don't know what kind of beer you have on tap...I had to retrieve our menus and silverware, one waiter said.. oh yeah man, help yourself. I guess I should be happy I'm part of the family :)
(3)jack q.
Great burgers, decent fries, chili was okay, caesar salad was meh, the cheesecake was delicious, and a good selection of tasty beers on tap. The service was pretty good overall - great one time (Rachel) and okay the next - and it was a very laid back kind of place with lots of sports on tv. I'd go back for the Pub Burger and a good beer.
(3)John C.
Good food, not the best service. We waited about 20 minutes for our drink order and when it came some of the orders were wrong. If they are busy be prepared to wait a while for your order.
(3)Greg B.
Biggest rooftop bar in Columbia. Great specials, cheap cocktails and good service. Food is good as well.

We went to Carolina Ale House after the Color Run in Columbia a few weeks back. We sat out on the patio upstairs, which had a few other groups of color runners, as well. It started to get a little crowded after we got there, but there were still a few empty tables. Our server was nice and our starters (chicken nachos, fried cheese curds, and fried pickles because why the eff not) were delivered pretty quickly after we ordered and we demolished them in about 5 minutes because we were ravenously hungry after the race. It took about another 30 minutes for the first wave of entrees to arrive. Although we had a party of 8, only 3 entrees were delivered to the table. After another 10 minutes, 4 more entrees appeared, leaving one member of our table without food. We waited another 20 minutes before we asked to speak to a manager and the final entree (a buffalo chicken wrap, btw, not a complicated order. In fact, he was the 2nd person to order that exact thing, and the first wrap was one of the first entrees to be delivered) came out. The manager did give us 20% off our checks and apologized for the delay, but it was still kind of ridiculous. The view was nice though.

We went to Carolina Ale House after the Color Run. It got a little busy ad other Color Runners had the same plan. Our server was nice and our starters (nachos, fried cheese curds, and fried pickles because we had just completed a 5k and needed to re-carbo load) came out quickly and were devoured in the blink of an eye. We started having problems after the appetizers. We had a party of 8. Three entrees came out. Then later, four entrees. Then later, another entree came out. And after asking to speak to a manager, the final entree (a buffalo chicken wrap) came out. That was about an hour and a half after ordering. The manager did come up and offer 20% the check, which was nice, but 1.5 hours is an excessive amount of time to put a chicken wrap together. I realize that Carolina Ale House is a chain and should be held to an extremely high standard, but still. Additionally, three of us ordered burgers done medium and they were definitely served well. At the rate the chicken wrap was being served, however, none of us wanted to take the time to point it out and wait for a new entree. Probably won't make another visit here, unless it's just for appetizers. Those fried pickles and fried cheese curds were pretty good.
(2)Yvonne M.
This place was great! Terrific service, awesome ambiance and the food was...ok. I couldn't give a 5 star rating since the food wasn't great. I ordered a burger and it was so salty, I couldn't stand it...so I Sent it back. Instead, I got a chicken wrap which was quite tasty. My husband gotta salad and he said it was good too. I would go back for sure!
(4)Taylor S.
The bar deck on the second floor is definitely something you don't see all the time. If you're coming here you have to sit outside on the roof! It's a great place to go with a large group of friends! They have a ton of great options to choose from. My personal favorites are their mozzarella sticks and their fried shrimp! They also offer an appetizer sampler where you get to try a bunch of their appetizers, which is great. If you're wanting to experience a new food environment, you should check this place out!

We live in Charleston but visited Carolina Ale House with some friends in Columbia when we found the original lunch destination wasn't open on Saturday. It's a pretty neat sports bar with tons of Carolina Gamecock memorabilia and a rooftop bar (it was cold and raining, so we didn't go out there). There were 4 of us, and we split a full-size nachos appetizer. The app was a great deal and really good if you have a table of people. You can get a smaller order, but it was only $1 for the large and it easily fed all of us for an app. It would be good to split and share when having some beers and watching a game too (did I mention this would be a fun place to watch games? Tons of TVs playing various football games on a December Saturday (Carolina was not playing that day). For food, I had the lunch special, which was barbeque salmon. It also came with rice and veggies. The food was good, although the sauce was poured on the salmon, I expected it to be brushed on and grilled or something, but for $9.99 it was a good portion and price (I did scrape some of the sauce off). My husband had a sandwich, and our friends had a burger and a pizza. My friend had a lot of special requests for toppings on her pizza, but the order came out perfect and our server answered all our questions and did a great job. There is a small parking lot outside, and they had tasty key lime flavored mints by the door for us to take on the way out. Aside from the sauce on the salmon (it tasted fine, just wasn't the greatest presentation), we really enjoyed CAH. It seems to be a small chain in SC, and they just opened one in Summerville, so we may try it out the next time we're close by.
(3)Jim V.
Trademark trolling at its finest, suing a small craft beer store hundreds of miles away for using a name that happens to fall on a CAH menu. A petty company that no one supporting small local business should want to support.
(1)Emily E.
4 stars because of the rooftop bar which is a sparse commodity in Columbia. On nice nights it's a fun place to come hang out and watch games. Food isn't anything spectacular, but it's not bad either. The sampler platter is probably my favorite and more than enough for a meal. Chicken nachos are also good.
(4)Karen S.
Carolina Ale House is your typical sports bar eatery whith your typical sports bar food (wings, burgers, sandwiches, and a few other dinner selections). There is ample seating at this location (seeing that it is downtown in The Vista) and we were able (for the most part) get a table for our (big) group this past weekend. Food wise- you can get most of what is served here at other restaurants in the area - nothing over the top that would have me coming back again and again. Probably since there was a big group, there was more of a wait than I cared for between our drink orders and by the time our food orders were finally taken. Given that this was a Saturday evening, a big group (along with what appeared a bachlorette party and World Cup Finals going on), our food was quickly delivered after our orders were placed. I know the Harbison location has Trivia on Wednesday night - not sure about this location if they do trivia at all.
(3)Rick T.
I only come here for the roof top bar when it's nice outside to enjoy several Coronas. Don't expect any quick service here or great food, start serving buckets of local oysters or anything original.
(2)Jeff W.
If you are looking for a spot to watch your favorite sporting event, this is the spot to be. I was in town on business and wanted to watch the Seahawks game. They had plenty of TVs and were more than happy to put them on for me. I returned that night for dinner to watch the Chicago Blackhawks game, and they were more than happy to put it on for me. The food was good and the beer was great. Their prices are fair and I will definitely go back the next time I find myself in town.
(4)Adam B. J.
This place is a sports bar. Nothing shocking, but a good place to watch NFL if you want to watch various games. I highly recommend the wings. Grilled or fried actually. The fried are battered, kind of like hooters does their wings. The grilled are actually my favorite there. They get a good grill flavor on the wings. Cold beers, and lots of drafts/specials.
(3)Joni A.
The best thing about this place is their burger with bacon. Good Lord it's the best in Columbia. I guess it could have been because I was an eensy bit hungover when I had it, but I'll sure go back for it. Oh and the rooftop bar. It's the best too. Bartenders upstairs chat with each other too much and cause the service to be slow, but I still like it here.
(4)Samantha A.
This is an awesome place to skip work when the weather is nice. They have one of the best patios in the city, the food is great, the drinks are cold, and the service is usually really great. We like the fish tacos, the wings, the nachos, and the sandwiches. However, the ribs are the best in Columbia. Definitely a good place for groups, families, business lunches, or a casual date night
(4)Brandon L.
Typical ale house with better atmosphere and roof top dining. I enjoyed the Baja chicken salad, that was as advertised but lacked anything memorable. The beer selection is above a typical ale house but by no means a craft beer bar. I'm sure the establishment is "hoppin" on Friday and Saturday night but calm on the Wednesday night i dined there.
(3)Lexa S.
Been here a few times and I really like it. I wanted to review it because I think they deserve a lil higher star amount. No, they arent incredible, but the deck is nice and I think its a good classic sports restaurant. There's some higher rated places nearby that are similar in quality so I thought I'd just boost this one a little.
(4)Duc L.
Overall, I would give this a 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 to be nice. Went here on a Friday afternoon for lunch at 1pm. Wasn't crowded at all. Had a table for 6 on the top balcony, I would say there were a total of about 12-16 people all together on the top balcony. Server was attentive. He quickly grabbed orders, brought drinks, refilled said drinks in a very quick manner. The time between food order and it arriving to the table was a bit slow though. Not server's fault I assume. I know this isn't fast food, but we went through an appetizer and then some before the food actually reached the table. Maybe that's the bottle neck that others are concerned about. As for food: had the Spinach Dip, half chips and half tortilla. Nothing to rave about, but it is good. As for my entree: Had the fish tacos, fried. Tip: order it with all the dressings on the side so that when you're on your second taco, it won't be all soggy at that point. I never even thought of that until the server asked if I wanted it on the side. Props to him for that. But what I am going to rave about here is that mango salsa. That is the BOMB! It is so good. It's literally just mango chunks in a cup that you put on your taco. I don't even know if they dress it with anything, but it's heavenly. Other than that, ordinary experience for me at an ale house. Pretty tame actually. Good food, nice weather, balcony seating, fits the bill for me on a Friday lunch with the peeps.
(4)Coco T.
Nice sports bar atmosphere. Typical bar food. The zingers were delicious but definitely not for the health conscious. Enjoyed the Carolina Hurricane. Lots of tvs with different games on them. Overall cool place to hang out with friends and watch some sports.
(4)April C.
First of all, our waitress was still new so I can't blame any of the service on her. It was a slightly busy Saturday night and she was trying her best. Secondly, the food. You expect regular bar food and it was pretty much just that. We ordered a plate of the fried pickles which were okay but lacking any seasoning. There was a slight aftertaste but couldn't, for the life of me, figure out what it was. We ate them all since we were hungry and drinking a bucket 'o' beer. I ordered the burger with cheese which was nothing great. The meat was dry but at least the toppings were fresh. The "side" of fries was maybe a small handful, at best, of delicious fries. THEY were the tastiest thing I had the whole night! I would go back just to order the fries. My other diners has so-so dinners as well. Nothing horrible but nothing great either. I will say that the rooftop dining and bar is really great to watch the sunset from and a great place to watch sports.
(2)Kelley D.
Don't eat here if you want good food and good service. Food is heated from frozen and drowned in BBQ sauce. Wait staff does not know what a Porter is...served my husband a light beer claiming it was a Porter. Every restaurant in this chain had been disappointing.
(1)Chad L.
Horrible! Started at the bar while waiting for a table and the bartender who is 21 knew NOTHING about drinks. And when the four of us asked about certain things, she acted like WE had no clue about what we were asking. After moving to the table, the bartender and the waitress couldn't decide how to handle the bill. We ordered two appetizers - After waiting thirty minutes for these, the fried pickles were soggy in grease and hardlynhad any batter on them. The nachos were ice-cold and the cheese wasn't even melted. They took the food back and told us the manager would come out and talk with us. We didn't request that. We just wanted warm food. Well nevermind, the manager didn't even come out and we were told that we wouldn't have to pay for them. Well, thanks! And the time it's taking to type this is the time we've been waiting on the bill. Never again.
(1)Sam V.
Best chicken wings I have had in a long time! Beers are cheap too. Can't go wrong with the steak or burger either.
(4)Ashley K.
Nice draft beer selection. Cool atmosphere. Food was pretty good. Rooftop bar was neat. Staff was friendly. Service was slow and the waitress kept bringing the wrong beers.
(4)Daniel M.
Their rivets steak was phenomenal. No need for any additional sauces, salt or even pepper for any of the food they served in the entire restaurant. They steaks may look pricy, but they tend to be larger than one would think. I had the ceasar salad, ribeye medium rare, and smashed potatoes. Services was pretty meh, and they were a bit pushy when it came to taking your plates, but the food more than made up for that. They had a terrible selection for cider fans and it all came in bottles, beer was also not very good, but they had a decent selection.
(5)John D.
If you want a cool place to hang out, drink a few beers, and hear live music... This is a cool little bar. If you are hungry and expect good service, you may want to try another place. The food was not bad but was not prepared the way we asked (fried pickles were not done and we had to return them). The service was even worse. While the waitress was a nice girl, she took forever and rarely came back. I will not be back during a busy time. This may be a nice place to go during lunch but not on a FRI night.
(3)Gunter L.
Went here Saturday night. The food and service was good until the server asked me if I needed change when I handed her my money. Would have given her a bigger tip had she not asked that
(3)James N.
Solid draft beer selection and the best blue cheese dressing I've ever had. Those are the big positives here, and very good wings. I always get mine fried, plain with habanero bbq for dipping. And a bunch of blue cheese. I really can't explain how good it is here. The rest of the menu is decent bar food. Service is hit or miss, but overall a good experience most of the time.
(4)Chris S.
Great place for watching football on Sunday. Good specials on domestics and liquor, wish they would have a few discounted craft beers, but decent selection. Decent service, excellent wings and pizza. Get the wings grilled and tossed!
(4)Pavan P.
Service was very bad.. She took our order then left and didn't come back with the food she just gave us the check .
(1)James B.
The service was subpar, the food was worse. Undercooked fries and pickles, I mean that's tough to mess up. It took 20 minutes for a drink refill. A girl named Marissa stopped by to ask me if everything was OK, I think she had a starring role in the movie "CLUELESS" or maybe Backroom Casting Couch. There was no manager on the floor, I will not be back....catch me at Wild Wings next door.
(2)Server C.
Service was not good. Waites for napkins for 10minutes. The food was terrible-chicken nachos. The cheese wasnt cheese. Ew. So dissappointing. Wont be back.
(1)David Y.
Raymond, our waiter, smelled like ass, horrible lingering body odor. I had the grilled chicken pita-good! Everyone else's food looked really good, too so, props to the cook. Our stinky waiter initially came out with a soda for my son when he ordered an iced tea, but he must have realized it immediately because before I could let him know he'd sent the wrong drink out he was already on his way with the correct drink. The waiters horrid odor was a BIG turn off, but his service and the food were good.
(2)Sandy E.
The bar tenders were really friendly, if a bit inattentive. The fried app sampler was as good as it could be. They also had an excellent selection of craft beers, games on every tv, and serve food until really late!
(3)Moose H.
The waiting staff could be better. Not only did they mess up my beer order, the messed up special too. The wings came out burned and the extreme hot flavor tasted bland and peppery. When our entree came, the lady yet again screwed up and gave fries instead of coleslaw. One good thing I can say though, is the food's hot and the beer is cold.
(3)Mackenzie B.
Love carolina ale house. The spinach dip with pita bread is amazing, best I've ever had. They have a great beer collection. The honey buffalo sauce is great, especially on the buffalo chicken wrap. Delicious fries. Great place.
(5)DJ J.
Hard to judge a place off one visit. The food was nice. At least mine was; others I was with said the French Onion Soup they orderedwas "too peppery". Service on the other hand....let's just say "don't joke with your server". I said one harmless little joke about wanting my burger cooked "over fire" and "Michelle" (whose name I haven't changed!) did her best to ignore me the remainder of our time there. And against my initial urge....I still left a generous tip--bitches need to get paid too. Doubt I'll be back.
(3)Ishea B.
My husband has raved about the Ale House for some time now so I was looking forward to checking it out myself. I wasn't necessarily impressed, but it was far from a let down. I liked the amount of TVs and thought that the selection of beers was nice, as should be expected from a place called "ale house". Our server was friendly, though she seemed a bit scattered and messed up our order. My husband absolutely loathes sending food back to the kitchen, but I'm not one for keeping things that aren't what we ordered. They fixed our order, hopefully no "special sauce" got added in the back lol. I think the wings were awesome... their fried pickles were disappointing (I'll stick to Buffalo Wild Wings for these) and their Sweet Tea Mojito was lackluster (again, go to Blue across the street for this drink). I did enjoy the greek pita I ordered and my husband liked his burger. This is a small thing, but I love that this place gives celery AND carrot sticks with their wings. So many restaurants have scaled back and only give celery and it's annoying. I'd like to give this place another try once the weather warms up a bit and see how the outdoor seating is upstairs... seems like a nice time.
(3)Dave M.
Great rooftop sports bar. Better than average bar food and daily specials are usually pretty good.
(4)Katie R.
Ale House is good when you don't really know what you want to eat or if you're in a big group. The upstairs bar is really fun for big games or birthdays because it's inviting and you can spread out while still being there to eat! It's a bit of a hidden gem in the Vista.
(5)Tessa U.
It was ok. I just wanted some food in my stomach and a beer before bed. I came to the bar, the beer selection was just ok. I actually ended up with a bud light. I really wanted pizza, so I ordered one. It was relatively inexensive. It was ok, but the sauce had a lot of big chunks of onions in it. I know there are often onions in the sauce, but they should be cooked in enough that someone who hates onions, and didn't order any on their pizza, can eat it without having to chew on and choke down a bunch of onion. I ate one piece and went home. I have the leftovers...maybe I'll pick off the toppings. On the other hand, they do have UFC, They have a lot of TVs and would probably be a good place to go to watch sports.
(2)Bob C.
Below average bar food, slow service.
(2)Todd M.
Yes, it's a typical "Ale House" but it's clean and the food is good. Both times I've been I sat at the bar. Service was quick and friendly, although it was a slow time. 40 beers on tap with a couple of local brews.
(4)
