Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

One of my favorite Mexican places! This location is right in West Ashley near my house- so it is my favorite spot to go to. The staff is great and so prompt! Our drinks are never empty, the chips are never ending and the salsa is AMAZING. The food is exactly as you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. A legit one, not a "we are going to try and be Mexican, but are actually extra fancy Tex-Mex" They are reasonably priced, as well. The only downside to it, which is why it lost a star, is the alcoholic beverages are super weak. I always question if there is alcohol even in it, as it usually jsut tastes like straight mixer.

This is a hard review. I was hungry and staying at a friends apartment nearby. Knowing only downtown restaurants, this was a gamble especially knowing that my Mexican food knowledge doesn't reach further than Taco Bell. The atmosphere when I entered was pretty cool which made me switch from take-out to dine-in. I ordered a large beer and large it was. For food i first ordered fajitas which i had mistaken for quesidillas. So i changed it against the feeling of my waiter. I must say... This was the best choice ever! Savery, juicy, awesome! When the bill came though, i saw they charges my first order so i told the cashier and she went to ask the waiter. My spanish might be not existing but i do know body language and once again the waiter was rolling his eyes. I did got the right check but nobody was happy with me changing my thoughts all the time. Might been my bad... But i did liked my choice!

Good food for a good price... Always quick and food is always hot. Haven't been disappointed in anything that I've ordered. Chorizo Grilled Taco is one of my favorites! Been coming here for a while now and we'll continue to keep coming back.

I like it here. Sometimes the food can be oily ( chimichangas and quesadillas- peppers and onions), but I really like there California Burrito and chips. Margaritas are so-so.
(4)Danielle M.
Decent. I like the burritos there and they're not bad in price. But I'm from California, and this does not compare to Mexican food back home. Everything is just sort of middle of the road. I think the servers are really excellent and the food is pretty speedy. But overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. It's just okay

I ate here last night with my boyfriend. The service both times we've gone hasn't been great ,though the staff is friendly. I had the fajita quesadilla which was huge and delicious. I can not remember what he had but he cleaned his plate. I have no problem with the food but the service really is very slow and the chips were not as crunchy as they should have been. It is priced around the same as any other mexican restaurant I have been to. Could be very cheap or it could be mid priced. I believe my meal was around $8.50 not too bad. Go here if you want a cheap bite and aren't pressed for time or don't care when they come back to take your order. Don't show up starving because you may be a little hangry about how slow they are.

Food has gone down hill in the last 4 or so months. I loved it from 2010 thru around April 2015. I don't know if they changed owners or what.

Finally figured it out - everything is pretty cooked and just heated up in a pan. Beef Fajita - overcooked meat. Tonight was their "anniversary" with a "maharaji band" (sic) - DJ with BLASTING MUSIC OUTSIDE, BUT ANNOYING INSIDE!!! Don't waste your time or money.Used to like it........

Awesome authentic Hispanic grub! Friendly staff! Ask for Pancho, he'll set you up right! Only downside, if you find it to be, is they have a very small bar area. But you can always tuck in, belly up, and have at'em! Great place for families! Throw a kick-ass may 5 party!

We love Rio Grande. It's our new favorite fast and affordable Mexican restaurant. A must try is the Pollo Yucateco. I found this from another Yelp review and order it almost every time. Haven't been able to find it at any other restaurants. Grilled chicken topped with grilled peppers and chorizo with flour tortillas to wrap it all up. Go for it! Chorizo grilled tacos and carne asada are delicious! I also love the chicken soup. This is the closest Mexican restaurant to our house, but a little hard to find. It's located on the side of the Food Lion shopping center. I'm sure gald we saw the Yelp reviews and gave it a try. We will keep coming back for more.

Rio Grande is the only Mexican Restaurant that offers Pollo Yucatan; that I know of. It's my favorite Mexican meal of all time. Try it if you like food with a kick! Pollo Yucatan is two grilled chicken breasts (pounded thin) topped with queso cheese, poblano peppers, and chorizo. Check it out in the picture section. The sides included are Spanish yellow rice and a salad (whole avocado on top of lettuce and cucumbers). I've been here numerous times--no less than a dozen. Everything offered is as expected as in any Mexican joint. They do offer margaritas in different flavors, which is fun.

My "go to" Mexican place. The queso with chorizo in it is my favorite! The salsa is great- not too spicy like some other nearby places. Huge menu, so there is bound to be something for everyone. I usually get a burrito of some kind and they are always yummy. Huge mugs of beer and really good margaritas keep me coming back almost weekly. Love it!

Hidden away in the corner of a strip mall. You don't expect good things from strip mall places, but Rio Grande is one of my 'go-to' places for some good US-Mex. I order the same thing every time I go now, look on the back of the menu and get the side taco carnitas. They're less than $4 each and very tasty. The carnitas are pork, which is slow cooked and then pan seared so the meat gets a little crispy, but still tender and moist on the inside. There's not much more than a pork confit taste to them, so you do need to ask for cilantro and onions on the tacos. The tacos are served with a small side of pico as well, which brightens the flavor considerably. The only down side is the corn tortillas they're served on - bagged and rather bland, but for less than $4, what can you expect? The chips and salsa are pretty damned good here with warm, light and crispy chips and a fresh, light salsa, which didn't taste like it came from a can - very nice. My favorite Charleston US-Mex is still La Nortena, but Rio Grande is doing a very good job at keeping some simple, tasty, and well priced menu items.

This place is ok. Nothing real special. The tacos and quesadilla were soggy. Salsa is very plain. I will not be back sorry.

Went to this establishment on Friday night. (am visiting from out of town). It started off bad, from the young woman who sat us, who could not have a more piss poor attitude when we asked her to change tables. Mind you, we ended up sitting in a booth where the bench had torn leather - pitiful! Food all the way around was HORRIBLE! Queso was cold and tasteless. Chips were cold and greasy! I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes-They arrived cold, as you can see by the picture, the cheese wasn't even melted. One chicken, one pork and one unidentified meat that was so overdone it may as well had been pork rinds! Rice was bland and dry and the "cabbage" mixture was just "nasty" (sorry to be so harsh). Service was beyond pathetic, attitude's were poor as well. God forbid we ask for our drinks to be refilled. Anyone who thinks this is good Mexican has never had good Mexican!! Save your $$$, go elsewhere where they are foremost happy to have your business!

I just had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. The restaurant was florescent and freezing, but we sat anyway. We waited for over 10 minutes before the waitress came to ask for our drink orders (we already finished a basket of chips and salsa between 2 people before getting waters!). The server was very quiet, standoff-ish and kind of rude. I ordered the Chili Poblanos with Chicken because I had been craving stuffed peppers. The waitress brought our food, but we had no silverware, so we had to stare at the food until she decided to bring some over like a minute later. We she brought the silverware she immediately asked how everything tasted (which we had not even bitten into yet), and walked away with out receiving an answer. My food was absolutely disgusting. I am really not a picky person, but the chilis had been deep fried in some kind of pancake-like batter, and then saturated with oils and cheese. The breading was mistaken for a layer of cheese for like 5 minutes because it was so soggy and greasy. They had cooked the crap out of the Poblanos until the entire meal was one homogenous mush with no flavor variation what so ever. It was a huge pain to get the waitress to come back over to the table, I had to stand up and wave to get her attention because she was texting. She walked over with such an attitude, and I tried to explain (as graciously as possible) that the breading was gross and the meal was mushy, and she got really defensive, "Well I didn't make it.." type deal. I told her I understood that, but that I wasn't going to eat it. She took it away with a huff, and I heard her go and tell the cashier her 'version' of the story, very loudly I might add. The cashier walked over, I felt like I was being punished for something. Apparently the waitress had told her that I said the food was good earlier in the meal...which was a flat out lie. I will never go back to this restaurant, and I hope that the waitress changes her attitude, it was horrendous.

This review would be 5 stars if I didn't take the serving into consideration. The food is the best Mexican in the low country. The service is about the worst. You have a 50/50 chance of getting a good server. Never go if you are in a rush though, you might get the server who spends all their time watching a sports game or disappears in back never to be seen again. I could go on and on about all the horrible servers I've had there. But I'll focus on the point that despite the fact that their service is so horrible, I continue to go back for their wonderful food!

Having come from a place where I had an excellent regular Mexican restaurant I visited and having eaten west coast Mexican food, I have high expectations when it comes to Mexican food. It is one of my favorite cuisines to try anywhere I go. I moved to Charleston in August 2014 and have been on the search for a good Mexican restaurant that I could become a regular. This, unfortunately, will not be the place. The salsa is some the the best I've had in Charleston. The chips, however, are not crispy, crunchy like I would like. I ordered the burritos de Chile verde. The description says shredded pork and refried beans. The first trip I was brought 2 burritos with no beans in them and what looked like beef tips. I politely asked for a remake. They have no idea what shredded pork is. When they brought out the remake it was sloppy and the refried beans became pinto beans with no seasoning. It was not tasty at all. The rice also came with the little veggies in it that usually appear is freezer versions. If I came back I would definitely not eat anything with pork in it.

We're new in town and looking for a good Mexican restaurant for when we're feeling Mexican (which is a few times a month). Rio Grande was the closest one to our house so we tried it out. Overall, we really enjoyed the food- the salsa was excellent and the portions were large (I even had a to-go box). Hubs had the chicken fajitas lunch and I had the shrimp quesadilla lunch. The sweet tea was also good and not overally sugary. We went later in the afternoon, around 3ish, and the restaurant was still pretty steady with a lot of locals. We really liked the rice and the different salsas (if you ask, they will bring out hotter or milder salsa). However, the shrimp quesadilla could've used another shrimp (only had 4) and the service wasn't overally friendly. The waiter/cashier seemed a little tired and overworked- not sure if they had a very busy lunch or what. We would return but will try other Mexican places before we can say they "won us over".

Waited out the ridiculous Charleston rain storm here. Enjoyed their guac, it had a little kick. I ordered the Rio Quesadilla that had shrimp and scallops which were cooked perfectly, but the burrito itself was way way to greasy.
(3)Sheila W.
I had the Chili Verde. It was awful! Chewy pieces of gristle almost no sauce$11.95. What a waste of money.

It's pretty hard to find a reason to give a four-star review to a strip mall Mexican place, but in the case of the Rio Grande, it's hard to find a reason not to. This has become one of our "go-to" places, since both the service and the food are consistently above average, even for large group orders. I've heard a few complaints that this is an "Americanized" Mexican restaurant, but in my experience it's the best Mexican in West Ashley.

Me and some of my family to eat second time here it was the first time it was good so I came back but that was a mistake food was not good Service was not good the waiter took drink order got it asked a few minutes to look over menu some more people came in placed at them down their drink order came back to us and took or order set some more people behind us got their drinks few min. later table beside us got their meal noticed he like to watch the TV a lot refills on drinks mess that up notice the table behind us getting their dinner still have not got ours so the tow tables around us got served before us we were there before them 6 of us there were 6 of them the table behind us 5 of them after we finally got our meal and they weren't busy he jus like that tv make sure the other tow tables were well taken care of ask for two boxes to go brought one so needed to say did not take home the food just wasn't good service wasn't good so at this time I will think about go back . 4-26-0014

The first thing I noticed after walking into this restaurant is the extremely detailed murals. Many of them take up an entire wall and depict characters with "Rio Grande Takeout" and tequila or martinis. Many are being chased by wild dogs, some are cow tipping in a distant field, and cows are getting loose from the herd only to get caught in a river. Regarding food: I ordered a chicken tostada and it arrived hot and delicious. My husband ordered a chicken fajita quesadilla platter. Not typically being a fan of Mexican food, I was pleasantly surprised to find he was very pleased despite his review of how quickly his food was prepared. Regardless, he loved it and had no repercussions later. Thanks oodles for the amazing food, Rio Grande. We loved it!

I was not very impressed. Don't really like the food. My friends love it though. I'd say, just go a little further to Señior Tequila. Its way better to me.

YES! love me some cheap, good Americanized Mexican food. Rio Grande does it well! Great location... we needed mexican in the Belle Hall Shopping Center. So far.... service has been good, the restaurant is clean, and the cheese dip is flowing. Super lunch specials... can't beat four tacos for $4. Try Rio Grande soon! Really good!

This restaurant has great authentic Mexican food! You even get hot tortillias, the prices are fair and the food tastes great. We went there for dinner and there was no wait. Our server was a little preocuppied by some friends that arrived in the next booth but nonetheless it was a great time. Order the big beer you will thank me later!
