The criticasters of Cranston - clearly missed the excellent mark on this culinary cafe. In Italian l'osteria, is one fine tavern.

No Chicken This place gets a lot of love from Yelpers and I can see why. It's a charming little Italian Bistro with limited seats and very classic feel. Now comes the weird dilemma. The food was really good in some ways and disappointing in others. My wife and I ordered the white bean bruschetta. Great bread, tasty beans, good seasoning, However dry as a bone. White bean and sausage dishes need the pan sauce. It's like they threw it away. Strange #1 Now my wife gets braised beef fresh ravioli as an entree. The dish itself was very good, However the beef inside the ravioli was like hamburger. Strange #2 I ordered the pesto chicken pasta. This dish was really good. Aldente pasta, wonderful pesto cream sauce, However the dish says grilled chicken and there was virtually no chicken in the dish. The dish had a few tiny little shards of chicken, like they cut up 1/8 of a chicken breast in tiny little pieces. Strange #3 Overall: I want to like this place, 75% of the dishes were great and the service was very attentive, but the odd issues can't be overlooked. I'll try it again. Thanks

Excellent little Italian Restaurant! My husband and I came here on 6/3/15, all the way from MA. We started with a great bottle of Chianti followed by the Antipasto and on to the entrees. My husband has spent some time in Tuscany and we think they have done a great job recreating the simple flavors of the region. Would highly recommend.

I've been here a few times. My wife loves the pasta fazool. I got the antipasto dish and the steak. I felt the food was heavy and a little oily. I got a side of pasta with marinara which was cooked PERFECTLY. Its pricey for what you get. Aesthetically its a nice place and the staff is friendly and good. I'll probably give it another try and do a pasta dish

Who waits 15 minutes for the server to ask you if you want a drink? Same menu for years, make some modifications for God's sake! What a piece if work, avoid at all cost! SUCKS!

I had not been here for many years and we decided to go here to celebrate my mother's birthday. We had thought of going to one of the restaurants on Federal Hill but I had no desire to deal with the traffic. We were a party of 8 and we were not disappointed. Being mid week it was not very busy which was fine with us. I had the risotto special (braised veal) and my wife had chicken piccata and we both enjoyed our entrees. Others at the table enjoyed their dishes and the service was pleasant and attentive. We called ahead and asked if we could bring a birthday cake and they were fine with our doing so. The only cons voiced were a"a little too salty" and better Italian bread would be nice. The prices of all of the dishes were quite reasonable. Overall a very nice evening and look forward to my next visit.

I used to go with my family when I was a young adult and remember the food being very tasty. This Wednesday, after a great whale watch, I took my children back. We had such a great time. A special app was the fried Zucchini flowers stuffed with cheese and other yummy stuff. My daughter gobbled her two down. I had to be quick, she would have eaten mine too. My son had a 1/2 salad and he enjoyed it too. We all ordered pasta, I had the clams and pasta. My daughter had the bolognese. My son had the ravioli stuffed with braised beef in a vodka sauce. We all joined the clean plate club. Service was friendly and fun. We closed the place down. I think we are all looking forward to going back. It's a winner.

It was alright. We started off with a pizza. Very uneven. Some parts were crispy, other parts were doughy. I then ordered a chicken picatta. It was decent but it was a bit over cooked. the string beans were also a bit raw. The mashed potatoes were good though. For 5 of us, it was about 200 dollars. Far too much for the price. I wouldn't recommend this place. I'm glad I tried it, but it just wasn't my worth it in my opinion. The service was awful. Not once did he come by and check on us. Really. Really. Bad.

Excellent traditional Italian food with great atmosphere. This place is very small but it packs in, get there early. The service is excellent and very friendly, the food is absolutely awesome, I love the lemon chicken with pasta, they don't drown the pasta with a whole lot of gravy, they put just enough on so you can taste the semolina. They also have a great wine selection.

I would even go up to 4.5 stars. Had dinner here Saturday night. It's very small, so thankfully we had a reservation. The restaurant was pretty full, with only a couple of servers, but our waiter was attentive and we had our drinks within ten minutes of sitting down. We started with an order of calamari (which is not breaded) and mozzarella bruschetta. I loved the bruschetta, loaded with fresh basil, cheese and tomatoes. I had the sirloin steak special with kalamata olives on top, which may sound weird, but it was soooo good. Just the right amount of saltiness, and cooked just right. Great food and service, I would definitely return!

Still a favorite of mine, love the green beans that they serve with dishes. Also cooked and seasoned to perfection!

I was at L'Osteria last night and had a really nice reminder of just how great this place is. I was fairly new to Rhode Island 20+ years ago when I just happened to drive into Knightsville with some friends looking for a place to eat , and we walked into L'Osteria on what turned out to be their first night. I grew up on good food (I like to say both my folks could cook Julia Child out of the kitchen - in several cuisines) and recognized this place as the real deal. I returned there many times over the years, with many friends from out of town. (My folks came up from the Cape to corroborate it's excellence.) Normally, people might think of going "into town" with visting friends, but , although it's not glitzy and pretentious, when you enter this cozy space and peruse the menu, you know you're at a destination. It was nice, last night, to see several faces that I've seen there many times through the years, and that familiarity really does add to the experience. These folks have always been so welcoming and they never disappoint. I feet like, after all the great times I've had there, the least I could do is mention it..

Small establishment - great food and service. Been there twice and loved it both times. The waitress and other employees make you feel at home and the food is delicious!

Great local restaurant! Intimate setting, great staff and most importantly amazing food! The under the brick chicken is to die for and the chef even added some veggies to the penne pasta I ordered. All in all wonderful restaurant, will definitely be back sometime soon.

Just had a wonderful dinner at L'osteria with my cousin Steve. We started off with the squid which was excellent not fried but grilled with a light lemon sauce. We shared a pesto pizza which had a thin crust with a very nice pesto sauce. Finally we both shared broccli rabe which was excellent. We sat at the bar and had an opportunity to speak with the owner and her son. The mother was born in Italy in the Caserta region of Italy, between Naples and Rome, where many of the citizens of Knightsville are from My family is also from the region. The food is testimony to their heritage and committment to authentic Italian cooking.

WHAT A GEM!!! I've gotten take out from L'Osteria a number of times, and always very much to my satisfaction. This past Saturday, however, was the first time I made a point of actually eating at their Cranston location, and it honestly took the food to another level! I took my mom and sister (from out of state) to dinner here and they were both blown away, both by the atmosphere and the food itself. This place is such a cute little bistro, with limited seating and a cozy feeling. The attention paid to us by our waitress and the owner is unparalleled. The food, as always, was amazing! I got the risotto special which was out of this world (and was enough food to last for 2 lunches on top of what I ate at the restaurant - no small portions here!). My mom got the little necks and carpaccio and was in love. My sister had the salmon special which was made to perfection. We topped the night off with 3 cappuccinos. For the dining experience we had, you could not beat the price either. I'd be L'Ost without L'Osteria!

nice decor, but VERY small...maybe 30 seats total.. definitely make reservations... and it was full, so it was VERY loud.. Being 100% Italian, I have very high standards for Italian food. I started out with the sausage & rabe appetizer, which was fantastic. So good that I couldn't wait for the chicken carciofi e funghi (artichoke & mushroom) that I ordered. Plate came out looking great. 2 pan seared chicken breasts with a marsala-type reduction with artichoke hearts and mushrooms.. Sides of mashed red potatoes and sauteed string beans. The sides were great, but the chicken was a bit overcooked, and the reduction was sorta bland. Given how things started, I was disappointed with the entree. the night ended with a nice cup of cappuccino. Prices were in the $15-$20 range... fairly reasonable for a place like this. I just wish my entree was up to par.

Well, left there and I have to say, they were on point! The squid was great, and not the typical RI style. Nice to see the change. My accomplice said that her gnocchi were little potato pillows of perfection! I had the veal Marsala and it was very good, though the portobello mushrooms were to strong to match the veal. Overall the place impressed, and this is my first visit in a year. I was glad to see they were still great. It is small, only ~40 seats, with a good feel. Nice place for a date, and not to expensive.

Just came in for a quick little late lunch. Had a bottle of Nero D'Avola which was lovely to see on the menu. I don't even think any places on the hill have Nero D'Avola's, so definitely impressed with that. Shared a couple appetizers with 2 others. Had the grilled pizza with mozz, tomato, and basil. It was excellent. They put the basil on at the end so it isn't black and wilted from being in the oven... a common and unfortunate incident that most places do... but the dough was nice and thin, and the crust was perfect. The tomato sauce was very fresh, and the cheese was.. well, not fresh mozzarella, but shredded. Still good tho. Had the mussels as well with cannelili beans and diced tomatoes in a white wine brothe. The mussels were a tiny bit over cooked, but the dish itself was very good and the bread was toasted perfectly. Tiramisu was good, however it was all marscapone.... no noticeable lady fingers in there, but it was ok. Cappuccino was delicious, and the service was very good, however we were the only ones in there at 5pm lol. By the time we left, the restaurant was packed, which was nice to see for a small family owned restaurant that actually makes good food. Will definitely come back.

I had a recommendation for Italian food from an attorney friend in the Knightsville section of Cranston. It was not this restaurant but one of the places across the street. I parked and the frontage was so inviting, I gave it a try. The first time was in early October, not cold but cool outside. Packing cigars as always, the server noticed the fellas peeking out of my top pocket and asked if I wanted to dine outside and smoke. Next thing I know is I'm sitting along the front of the place with a Perfect VO Manhattan and an ashtray. I had the Lamb Chop special. The meat was cooked correctly, sides were very complementary to the dish. Great rustic chick pea and olive oil spread with the bread starter. Rabe had this great sausage, a whole meal in a side dish. Not a doubt in my mind this was the place. Good portions, charming staff and such a great vibe that I have been back often. This is my 'go to' Italian for the out-of-towners who want the 'Hill'. Decent parking and always hopping. Seats maybe 28 people so I always plan for off nights.

We dined there last evening with six people. The appetizers were amazing, everyone enjoyed their entrees. The wine selection was awesome and our waitress was very accommodating in letting me test a sampling of wine before ordering. As we do not frequent this establishment for we live in South County, when we do we are always greeted by the owner with a warm hello and a handshake. It was a very enjoyable dining experience and I would highly recommend if you have not tried. B. Lane, North Kingstown

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
