solid sushi, really loved the special roll of the day - had mango and jalapeños. very enjoyable! steamed dumplings were pretty mushy so i wouldn't order those again. good, attentive service.

Husband and I stopped for a quick lunch here at Sushi Land. Not too crowded at all and a waitress let us choose where we'd like to sit. I'm not as adventurous as Husband when it comes to sushi so anything I don't recognize I don't order. We both ordered Bento boxes which comes with miso soup and salad. I never like miso soup but I keep thinking eventually I'll find one somewhere - someday - that I enjoy. Found it! I really loved their miso soup! The actually boxes are huge chunky boxes that have normal size portions that look tiny in these plates. The salad was just iceberg lettuce and a couple of slivers of cucumber saturated with a sesame/mayo type dressing that was very tasty. Salad could be better if it had more than iceberg lettuce and cucumber. How about adding a bit of cabbage/carrot/scallion? I ordered teriyaki shrimp & California roll. The teriyaki shrimp had good flavor BUT how about cleaning the shrimp? It's gross to see that dirty vein in a shrimp. The California roll was - eh - had better at the local grocery store. Husband had the sashimi - tuna & salmon. He loved the tuna but didn't like the way the salmon tasted and only had a bite. He had the chicken teriyaki and agreed it had good flavor. One thing we both noticed was that the seafood looked good - seemed fresh - it was kind of warm. The waitress was very attentive and sweet. Don't ask for water because it doesn't taste like its filtered at all - it was gross. If we get a craving for sushi again we'll come back and try some of the other items.

PREPARE TO EMBARK ON... the most unremarkable sushi experience you'll ever have. I work close by and have been here a number of times when I'm scrambling for a semi-healthy and quick lunch. Before you go into this place, you've got to know that literally everything about this place is unremarkable, from the food, to the service, to the decor. As David B said, "It's hard to give this place a 2, but 'Meh. I've experienced better'" is the perfect description for Sushi Land. Surf: - The sushi roll selection is absolutely... normal. It has your typical selection of standard rolls and a few crazy ones for umpteen dollars. And they're all... pretty good. - The fish is fresh, I'll give them that. Turf: - The chicken teriyaki harbors a light brown sauce on it... similar to what you would think a watered down soy sauce looks like. And it's cooked, so there's that. - The salad was a scrumptious array of... iceberg lettuce with mayo sauce on it. No, really, it was just iceberg lettuce with a mayo sauce on it. Service: - Unremarkable. Not bad, not great, just... unremarkable. Decor: - ^See above Bottom line: If you want the most average sushi experience you've ever had, head to Sushi Land in Bryn Mawr. At least you know that you won't experience an upset stomach?

It's hard to give this place a 2, but "Meh. I've experienced better" is the best description I could possibly give. I liked the decor from the moment I walked in. Sadly, it stopped there: I sat myself and waited, then kept on waiting. Eventually, a guy came to me with a menu. When I attempted to take it, he hesitated, confused, then asked: "it's only one?" I thought something hostile and said something nicer, and the guy released the menu to my grasp. I ordered a bento box. The miso soup tasted fine, but was lukewarm, almost cold. The bento box itself was astronomically large. Alas, its contents were not. (A better deal than Midori, I suppose, though I'd rather go to Midori again.) The tuna sashimi could best be described as "sketchy," and this coming from a fan of Sakura Express, a discount sushi dive in Princeton whose prices offset the abattoir scent that suffuses it. I ate it anyway, because I'm dumb. The salad was an uninspired affair of iceberg lettuce with a miso mayonnaise and NOTHING ELSE. I sat for a long time waiting to pay, before finally just going and finding the waiter. There was really no excuse for this, as there were only a couple other tables in action. I tipped lightly, which seemed warranted. All that said: for $12.95, this wasn't a completely unreasonable meal, just pretty not good, and the slow service gave me the chance to grow grumpier and grumpier.

I came here with a group. Everyone really liked their meal but the service wasn't great. The salad dressing also tasted off (too much brown sugar and too much peanut flavor). I would not recommend coming here with a group because they can only split a check into 2. They also will only swipe 2 credit cards per check. This makes it a little difficult if you come with people who bring debit only. The check came with just prices on it, no itemization so we didn't know how much each person owed and just split it evenly. We also came when they were making a large bowl of wasabi and half of the restaurant's eyes started watering, causing people to have to step outside to get away from it. This was pretty unpleasant and I had never experienced that before. It is a solid place for BYOB though as there are no corkage fees.

Sushi land is supercasual sushi joint that consistently puts out really good, fresh sushi at a reasonable price. The agedashi tofu is delicious. They have take out and I used to have my husband order from here when I was on pregnancy bed rest at brynmawr hospital. (The baby is now 5 and we still come here and get take out) The house salad dressing made from crushed sesame seed is addictive. I usually buy extra to bring home with me for the week. I also like the specialty rolls like the kiss or charlie roll. Everything is good and pretty reasonable.

I really like this place. Simple, straightforward, no nonsense. My kind of place. Great sushi, nice salads and apps, cool little spot to sit and have lunch or dinner. They deduct a percentage point or two if you pay cash instead of card. Try the Halloween roll.

In short, the food is amazing!! I frequent many sushi restaurants and would consider myself a sushi enthusiast, and I have to say sushiland's sushi is amazing. I isusally start off with an order of Shumai (shrimp dumplings). For the entree, I recommend the Bay Scallop roll if you're looking for something warm and savory, the Cliff House if you're a salmon and avocado lover, the French Kiss for the spicy mayo + shrimp tempura combo that never goes wrong, the Bryn Mawr and George roll for something a bit more simple, and the WheDopBop if you love sashimi like I do. I would also recommend getting the Sashimi Salad with Salmon only - it's basically the WheDopBop without the rice. Oh yeah, and how could I forget the amazing salad!! The house dressing is one-of-a-kind and a customer favorite. End your meal with a green tea tempura ice cream, and I guarantee you'll be satisfied!

I stumbled upon this restaurant completely by accident. In fact, I was looking for a completely different sushi restaurant, got lost, and decided to give this one a try. What a fantastic mistake! My family and I were the only people in the restaurant, which made me a bit suspicious at first. Our server, however, was very friendly and welcomed us to sit wherever we felt the most comfortable. The decor is adorable--there is even a sushi clock. All three of us ordered the Sushi Lunch Platter, which includes 5 Nigiri (great variety) and a California Roll, and either Miso Soup or the House Salad. Our server was very attentive, and all of the food was absolutely delicious. I like that you can see the food being prepared in the center of the restaurant, no matter where you sit. You can tell the ingredients are very fresh. The portion and price were both very reasonable, as well. The only reason I am giving this 4 stars, and not 5 stars, is because two of the employees were telling very vulgar stories, in Spanish, quite audibly. I definitely could have done without the vivid detail that they certainly assumed I couldn't understand! Overall, a fantastic dining experience. Friendly staff, delicious food, great price. I will definitely be back.

This has become the designated restaurant my friends and I will go to in Bryn Mawr. If it wasn't one of the more affordable BYOB places in the area I don't think we would frequent it as much. The food is meh. As a sushi lover, average would be a compliment for the selection and quality of the sushi.

Came here for casual lunch with people who I enjoy company with. The interior was very pleasant, with the ability to see the chef make the rolls. I am not a sushi connoisseur, so as someone not picky I can say that I really enjoyed the sushi! It was decently priced, and the menu had special sushi choices named after various colleges and locations on the main line. I would definitely be a regular.

I was in the area, and started craving sushi for lunch this weekend. I stopped in to get a quick fix. I go for maki rolls, mostly spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and combination rolls with avocado. What this place puts out is among the better rolls I've had in the area. Fish freshness was on point. I'd come back here happily and recommend it to anyone. I was mildly disappointed in one thing. I saw a three roll special for $12.95 listed, but I found out that one of the rolls was a simple cucumber roll. The sushi places I frequent most often, farther up the main line in Paoli and Frazer, tend to offer three fish maki rolls in their specials for a similar price. It wasn't enough of a disappointment to give them a bad review by any means. I enjoyed what I did order very much. But it was enough for me to not give them 5 stars. Just a personal preference.

This place is usually packed and loud. But with good reason. The sushi is reasonably priced for a main line spot and the staff and food is great. Please note, there are expertly trained mexican gents working the sushi bar, not your average chefs but they work magic back there. Fish is always fresh, I've never encountered a bone or had a roll fall apart on me. Take out is available and if you can catch a slower hour the atmosphere isn't terrible. I've tried several rolls without disappointment and they do have their share of adventurous types if you're looking for something different. My only con is I'd like to see more scallops on the menu, but I have a fav spot for that kind of roll anyhow.

This place is my favorite sushi restaurant I've ever been to. The unique rolls are delicious. My favorites are the Lion King roll and the Jessica roll. Everything is great though. Their miso soup and salad are great for appetizers. You also get unlimited free green tea!

Sushiland is one of my favorite places to eat... BYOB, service is great, staff is friendly and helpful. They have the best miso soup around. My wife gets the tofu teriyaki every. single. time. But she says that's because it really is that good. The sushi is fresh and delicious. The restaurant decor may be lacking but it's a comfortable and casual place and I'm really there for the food anyway.

One thing I've learned since returning to the Main Line is that good reasonably priced sushi restaurants and BYOBs are two things that can be fairly hard to come by. But fortunately I've found that Sushi Land provides an equal amount of both and does it well. While some of the special rolls may have come across as being a little too gimmicky, especially the Angry Bird which featured chicken and cheese done spicy sushi style ( img.izismile.com/img/img… ). But there were also a plentiful amount of winners like the Honeymoon of spicy yellowtail and & eel; and the Halloween combo of spicy crab, tuna, and salmon. the regular rolls were reasonably priced and easy to mix and match; as I found out when I got my plentiful share of spicy crab, tuna, and salmon crunch rolls. Bust there's also a huge selection of sushi & sashimi dishes, and a number of noodle dishes to satisfy those weirded out by sushi. Add in an even better priced lunch menu, apps like gyoza and agedashi tofu, an ever refilling pot of tea, and solid service, and you have one of the better sushi destinations in suburbia.

I love sushiland. I used to go there so often that one day when they were really busy I jokingly said, "I should work here!" Later that week I applied for a job, was hired, and have been eating sushi there almost daily. It is fresh ingredients. I mean sushi land is so popular that we have to get new ingredients every day! The staff are super nice [and I'm not just saying that because I am part of the staff ;)]. And the price is CHEAP for sushi, especially on the mainline. I go to Sushi Land at least 3 times per month - the Crunch Roll is the best sushi I have ever had. It's best to go for either an early dinner or past 9pm to avoid the crowd. Sushi Land is BYOB and very reasonably priced. The servers are attentive and the men behind the counter making the sushi are so friendly! Everyone who works here seems to love their job. If you are in a hurry, get take out! But it is a $15 credit card minimum.

I will forever remain loyal to this place, even with the huge influx of college students (rightfully so, with villanova and bryn mawr flanking the streets). Service is excellent, GINGER DRESSING on the house salad is a killer, and they will continuously make my request for sushi that is not on the menu - the Key West roll - and I will be forever grateful. Great spot for just two, or 15 people! The boats are heavenly and always fresh, and as the rare vegetarian sushi eater - they very much cater to my needs. Will always come back to you!

Quality seems to have gone downhill with a rise in prices (bringing it from cheap to average). I get pretty standard rolls, which I've always enjoyed, and on my most recent trip they were good but not noteworthy. Tempura was pretty tasteless with a very limited assortment of mushy vegetables. The beef teriyaki was downright yucky. I didn't believe my friend and said I'd take the leftovers since he didn't eat any of it, but it tasted sort of like roast beef cold cuts instead of a nice piece of steak, and full of gristle. Our server was very sweet (and maybe new?) but very slow. We didn't get refills on water or any attention outside of food being delivered unless we flagged her down. Don't think I'll be returning.

Me and my coworker ordered sushi from this place one night. I ordered a Jessica Roll and a California roll, both cooked crab rolls. My coworker ordered a Maki Sake roll and a spicy tuna cucumber roll, both raw rolls. We ate around 7:30 and by 8:45 I was running to the bathroom vomiting. I was so sick, broke out into cold sweat and could not even stomach cold water. The next day my coworker had said she was up all night vomiting and making bathroom trips, she even had to call out of work sick. Just thinking about eating there now grosses me out. And yes we believe it was from the sushi because both of us getting sick like that is no coincidence.

My friends and i have been regularly going to sushi land since high school. Tonight was the most awful experience ! It was awful enough to never go back. There is clearly new management. It was very busy, but there was a lack of basic attentiveness in the wait staff. We had to ask for water, and it was never offered again. Furthermore, we waited an inordinate amount of time to get our cards back. A few of my friends ordered food to go and nothing was separated. Everything was thrown in one bag leaving us to separate it. Typically that is not a huge issue, but every sushi roll looks very similar!! Very poor service. There were no apologies offered! There was an evident disconnect between the wait time for everything and no explanation was offered.

While I don't have much experience at all with sushi, the crispy roll and Bryn Mawr rolls at Sushiland are both delicious. It's reasonably priced and a great Main Line date spot. Sushiland is a favorite of Bryn Mawr College students, and that wouldn't be the case if it weren't pretty good and reasonably priced.

Super cheap and a go to place for college students around the area. Seriously, come here anytime and the place is crawling with students dining from Nova, Haverford, or Bryn Mawr. A lot of the waiters are also local students. It's super cheap and good for what it's worth. I recommend the whe dup bap, a mixture of rice and sashimi in a bowl of spicy sauce. It's the best!

Great neighborhood sushi bar; what it lacks in ambiance it makes up for in its delicious, affordable sushi. We've never had a bad meal here. Couple things to look out for: it gets a bit warm in the summer, they will only do 2 checks per table, and it's BYOB. Totally worth it, though.

Our favorite sushi spot by far! The place is always packed, and we typically opt for takeout b/c of this. Fresh, tasty sushi....my favorite roll is the French Kiss...also a fan of the Charlie Roll and their rainbow roll is tasty as well. Lately I've been into the Udon's...I recommend the chicken udon. House salad is always yummy as well - I don't know what that dressing is - it's peanutty, gingery deliciousness that I wish they'd bottle and sell. Best time to eat in is during the summer when the Nova kids are out for the summer. It's a BYO/Sushi - can't beat it! Casual setting, friendly service -highly recommend!

Sushi Land reminds me of a small Japanese den. Intimate, cozy, warm Sushi bar you see all the time on TV. The only thing I feel is missing is a drunken Japanese business man hitting on my wife. I like the place for the decor, but also the way they arrange their seating area. It is just the right amount to move and feel comfortable, but also perfectly so you do get that communal feel without feeling like someone is eaves dropping. I would say there isn't a particularly exotic or adventurous menu, but then again it is main line and that should not be blamed on Sushi Land but the general lay of the land.

This is a popular sushi spot in Bryn Mawr for the locals and college kids from Bryn Mawr and Villa Nova. It's good but not great. If this was downtown it would not be so popular. It is small and feels local. It's a little messy with a lot of clutter laying around. The service is good, not great. The offerings seem pretty standard. The sushi is not as pretty or well made as other spots in the city. The fish seems fairly fresh. I also have had the udon here and it lacks a lot of seafood and noodles. The portions are not very generous. I eat here a lot as it's near the Bryn Mawr movie theater. It's not awaful, just VERY average in every way.

Dynamite. When I go for sushi, this is what I think about! The setting is quaint and low key with seating for plenty. A friend and I indulged on a small boat of an incredible mix of sashimi and sushi. Even though we were full, we couldn't stop eating. Fresh looking and tasting. I am not a sushi snob but as a pescatarian, I know good seafood and Sushi Land certainly delivers. I will most definitely going back soon. Miso soup.... Rocked! The service was incredible and the server helped us figure out top notch menu items. I forget the exact rolls we got but they included eel, whitefish, salmon and spicy tuna. All were excellent in their own way. Kudos Sushi Land.

Pretty good sushi for the suburbs, and it's BYOB. My girlfriend and I came here on weekend evening. We were seated very quickly, and the wait staff was fairly attentive from the door. The rolls are typical and tasty-- good spider roll. They do have an inventive bay scallop roll (warm, saucy, and pretty good) that I would get again. They also serve barley tea (nice change from green or jasmine tea). The space is fairly large, clean, well kept. The biggest draw back is that it's a hub for college students (I'm a young working professional), and they crowd the place, are sometimes loud, and drink boxed wine by the Yahtzee shaker. Maybe I'm spoiled by the very good sushi places in Center City, or maybe I just wasn't into the restaurant the day I visited. Either way, it's a good spot for the suburbs. Bottom line: Go to Sushi Land, have some good sushi, drink some wine, and beware the college kids.

I lived in Bryn Mawr for a year and this was my favorite place to grab a bite to eat; I love sushi! The rolls here are sooo good, and there are plenty interesting ones to chose from! The prices are great as well. My favorite roll is the French Kiss (SOOO GOOD!). I also get the Summer Lover and Honey Moon. Mmm...I'm getting hungry thinking about it. On top of everything, it's also a BYOB which is a huge plus in my book ;) It's a very casual setting, the interior is anything but fancy but the service is great. I've never had any complaint about the quality of food or service and I have been here to dine-in at least a dozen times. Perfect date night if you don't mind the college scene + lack of decor.

After living in Haverford for a few months and failing to find a good local sushi place; I asked a friend from the area where I should get Sushi. When I saw the store front for the first time I was worried that my friend might be wrong. The line out the door instantly showed me that this place was loved around the neighborhood. We had a table for 2 in 20 minutes on a friday night. The food was delicious, service was friendly and the atmosphere was perfect. This is now one of my favorite restaurants in area and the only negative from my first visit was my friend never told me that it was BYOB.

Sushi Land, a suburban BYOB, serves sushi and other kinds of Japanese cuisine - we shared a bowl of Agedashi tofu which was interesting. It's a clean, modest-sized venue that can handle about 40 diners. The decor is simple and appropriately Japanese-themed. While interaction with our servers was kept to a minimum, service was friendly when we dealt with them. A few of us dined here this past weekend. I went for the Villanova roll ($8.50), made of spicy tuna, crunch, unagi, and tobiko goodness, and the Cliff House roll ($9.50), with spicy crabmeat, shrimp tempura, salmon, avocado, and tobiko. Both rolls were pleasantly fresh, with a crispy consistency that was fun to bite into, and I loved their tangy, mildly spicy flavors. (Our server told us the chef made the rolls extra attractive because he saw me taking photos!) We all had sushi rolls, and all enjoyed them. Don't feel like driving downtown for Zento's sushilicious creations? Sushi Land will quell any suburbanite's sushi urges, and for a reasonable amount of money. Worth a try!

Sushi Land has some delicious rolls, is BYO and right on the mainline. The rolls are delicious and filling. The French Kiss, Dynamite, Crunch and Bay Scallop are some of my favorites. The tempura is also quite good. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, but it makes it more intimate. The service is a bit subpar, but the food makes up for it. Some may also find this place a bit pricey, but most sushi places are, and in that regard it still presents a good value. Ah, Sushi Land. Love of my heart. My stingy, tempura loving heart. Cheapass sushi, awesome greasy chicken tempura, and all the "special rolls" I've tried were delicious. I wouldn't recommend the nigiri, because frankly the actual quality of the fish isn't superb, but all the special rolls have enough bells and whistles (the Pink Lady's sauce is wonderful) to cover it up. More importantly, it's CHEAP. (and accepts Wildcard...) I've been with a group of college kids, but we weren't drinking so hopefully we were tolerable to the patrons around us. Pick-up's probably a better option for anyone looking to enjoy a quiet meal.

This is just a personal preference, but their raw sushi (sometimes) does not look fresh. I'm not trying, at all, to sound like I know everything, but growing up with parents who know how to look at food and tell whether or not fish is fresh, this fish does not look fresh. But I love their dessert, and shumai, and I'm sure the fried food is wonderful. If you have a sensitive stomach I really recommend not to eat the raw sushi here.

To make a long review short: - It's probably the most reasonably priced and tastey sushi you can get in the area. - Their Sushi rolls are all similar but that doesn't mean that they're not tastey! - Byob - Service is good. The restaurant is small and laid back vibe to it, no frills unless you count the pink curtain in front of the women's bathroom door... - The spicy sashimi salad is amazing and for 8 bucks you get a ton of sashimi in it. - Thinking about that spicy sashimi salad is making me salivate. I'm going there for dinner.

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Sushi Land yet. I've been here more times than I can count. After my last sushi bust, Sushi Land was an enormous breath of fresh air. Its a charming hole in the wall (by Ardmore's standards anyway) run by a cute Korean family. There are handmade drawings on the wall and unique specials (the latest one is the Angry Bird). The miso soup is incredibly flavorful and the sushi is still so damn good. I didn't even speak during my entire meal because I was in such bliss. My favorites are the Spice Girlz, Lady Roll, and the Villanova Roll. Service is quick, polite, and on point. Did I mention that the prices are incredibly affordable? And that its BYOB? This is what sushi places should be like.

The bay scallop roll (California roll topped with spicy scallop and baked), spice girl roll (spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, eel, and tobiko), and halloween roll (salmon, tuna, spicy crab, and crunchies) are very good and perfectly spicy without an overwhelming amount of mayo. The seafood tasted very fresh, and the amount of rice was just right. The service was friendly and efficient. The prices are very reasonable. This doesn't look like much from the outside but it's worth a trip if you' re near the Mainline. So excited to be heading back tonight to try the Lion King roll - and that's not just because it's one of my favorite musicals and movies.

This is definitely my favorite sushi place in all of the Philadelphia/mainline area. I love love love the many options they have here. The shrimp tempura is always fantastic and their speciality rolls are to die for. I've been here for both lunch and dinner and have never had a bad experience. I've always had good service and the food has always come out reasonably quickly. Definitely try the pink lady, spice gurlz, or dragon roll (i prefer without avacado) if you want a delightful twist on the shrimp tempura roll. My other favorites are the Bryn Mawr roll (they need to make a Haverford roll btw), the George Roll, and the Philly Roll. The Nigiri is also delicious. Honestly, you should just come here again and again and try everything on the menu. The fish is fresh and this place actually got me to like roe. The bento boxes are great for lunch. Honestly, anything on the menu is great. They also have tempura ice-cream which just about guarantees a 5 star review from me. I will admit that it can become extremely packed during peak dinner hours (6-8) and can be impossible to get a seat because it's a small place. It would be nice if they could expand. I love this place and wish it was closer to where I lived as I would be there all the time.

Awful, not fresh, packed with college kids. Since my kids like sushi, we eat it at least once a month, if not more. This place is within walking distance of my house and I would not go back again. I would be concerned of a food-bourne illness since the fish is either frozen or simply not fresh. As other reviewers have stated, don't be fooled by the crowds - it's all college kids who simply don't know any better.

When you are a poor college student on the Main Line, you simply can't afford to be a snob about your sushi. Sushi Land may not have the most exotic, or the most delicious, or the most creative Japanese fare in the area, but when you are living on a tight budget and craving some sashimi, Sushi Land is more than adequate. I've heard some complaints about mushy rolls, or fish that wasn't quite fresh enough, but I've never encountered either of those problems. A safe bet is to go for the donburi, which comes with soup and a house salad with mind-blowing dressing for around $15. The servers are friendly, although there are some (very mildly) frustrating policies (you can only split the check two ways, for instance, which can be a problem when there are three of you and you all planned on paying by card). Also, it's BYO, so remember to pick up your booze beforehand if you're planning on drinking.

My first time having sushi I was a little nervous. But it was so good! Also the menu is very creative and has a lot of variety. Everything was very fresh. Great service. A little cozy, but even going in with 5-6 people is easily accommodated. Great spot for sushi!

Another great sushi place on the Main Line! Pink Lady, Halloween Rolls , French Kiss, George and Jessica are some of my favorite's have a variety of specialty rolls,so you pretty much find something you like. Its a great place to come and have a casual dinner and fresh sushi. FYI-- It's BYOB. It is somewhat small so depending on the night and time you go , you may have to wait, but its definitely worth it. The service is good, sometimes a little long if its pretty crowded. The waitstaff is nice and accommodating. The pricing is a little expensive but its on the Main Line.

Driving past here, it's always packed solid. "Aha," thought I, "it must be good, look at all those people!" I was wrong. It's just chock full of college kids. Full solid of college kids. Food was tolerable, I've had equivalent, and it pains me to say so, at sushi joints in mall food courts. There's no real love or skill here, just lots of rolls with crazy names filled with "double crunch" or "spicy mayo with spicy sauce on top", which probably rates high with the local Villanova crowd but sucks if you like to taste anything. My chirachi was boring. Usually the sushi chef will at least attempt something, arrange this or that, but it was just warm stacked fish, cut real thick, on hot rice. Just let that roll around in your mind- thick fish, warm, sushi. I've never had warm sushi before. It's not good warm. This is just a mediocre sushi place serving college students mainly fully cooked rolls covered in mayo and sirachi. It's probably very good at that, but so is my local Acme, and I don't have to tip there. If you're looking for good sushi... eh. If you want a quick crunchy roll, sure. Perhaps I'm being too harsh on a place called "Sushi Land." Like I said, the food was tolerable. It's packed solid every weekend. They have all sorts of funky things. You could do worse, but I'm not exactly sure how.

I was super excited to find out that Sushi Land had baked rolls (Lion King Roll, Bay Scallop Roll), so I decided to order both. The reviews warning about the small portions were no joke! After getting over my initial disappointment, I decided to taste the darn thing. I thought, "Maybe something so compact can still pack a punch to my tastebuds?" Nopes, thought wrong. Tastebuds weren't even slightly roughed up. I know of a place where for a dollar more... you can get a normal-sized, bombass, flavor-packed Lion King roll. Just one minor catch, it's in CA. BTW, one additional star for the service.

Sushi Land has some interesting, creative sushi rolls at low prices. All the rolls are under 10.50 (even the special rolls). However, you pay for what you get. The fish doesn't taste fresh and the rice doesn't have the highly fragrant taste of usual sushi rice. After recommendations from our waitress, we tried the "famous" fried ice cream., deep-fried pound cake-covered green tea ice cream. I've never tried pound cake battered fried ice cream, and it seems to taste slightly better than the usual tempura-battered fried ice cream. However, it is nothing to really be "famous" about. Overall, the restaurant is good for a cheap, quick sushi fix, but nothing more than that.

First, let me just say that I'm not a college student, nor am I a sushi-novice. And yet I still love Sushi Land! Go figure. I used to work across the street from Sushi Land and was a little hesitant to go there due to what I considered to be an unfortunate name. But I put those fears aside and gave it a try a few weeks after it opened - it was great then and has only gotten better with time. Jae, the owner and head sushi chef, is indeed always coming up with crazy (and delicious) concoctions, special rolls, usually involving a lot of spicy mayo and tempura crunch. This is NOT a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination -- but when I've been watching what I eat or just in the mood for something simpler, I've had some of the best sashimi at Sushi Land I've had anywhere. With all the controversy around whether all sushi restaurants secretly freeze their fish without telling us, I won't comment on whether the fish at Sushi Land is really "fresher" than anyplace else I've been, but I can say that in appearance, texture, and flavor it compares favorably with any of the most reputable (and expensive) sushi restaurants I've frequented in New York, Los Angeles, and more recently Dallas, TX. Compared to other Philadelphia-area sushi restaurants, I find the quality of the fish to be superior to most, and I've come to use the sashimi at Sushi Land as the standard by which I judge others. Over time, Sushi Land has also gotten much more popular, especially with the college students who appreciate not just the good food but also the reasonable prices. The sacrifice for the price is not in the quality of the product -- it's that the tables are laminate, the floor is linoleum, and the walls aren't adorned with expensive artwork. The atmosphere is casual and down-to-earth, and I think another reason college students are drawn to Sushi Land is that they know they will be welcomed rather than just tolerated. It's actually fun to eat sushi here, and there's something to be said for that. Amongst the "Samurais" "Mikados" and "Mount Fuji's" of Philadelphia, I've come to appreciate that the name "Sushi Land", at first a complete turn-off to me, is a little quirky and completely unpretentious, and is a perfect fit for the place. If you're looking to eat expensive sushi with middle-aged professionals in an austere environment then, as others here have pointed out, you can head down the block to Fuji Mountain where the parking lot is packed with luxury SUV's and the tuna looks and tastes like it's just been taken out of the freezer. But if you'd like great sushi at a reasonable price in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, stick with Sushi Land.

The Sushi here can't be beat for the price. Very good quality, although another sushi place right up the street (Samuri) is better quality but also MUCH more expensive and Sushiland is BYOB as well. Expect to wait as the crowds decend here regularly (the word is out!) ... expecially on weekends during the college school year. This place definitly is a favorite of the college crowd

The restaurant is right on route 30. It has a spacious and welcoming ambiance. I tried the rolls here (the ones recommended by others). I would not say they are bad, but I did not find they out of this world.

Came here for lunch with a coworker and was satisfied with the food. We had for appetizers the gyoza and oshinko. The gyoza weren't extraordinary, but were as expected. I was a little bit disappointed by the oshinko plate since it was supposed to be assortment of Japanese pickles. I would not call 2 types of pickles an assortment. For lunch I had the chicken oyako don which scored solid points with me for taste of the omelet and the sauce and sheer size of the bowl. The chicken was also good. It looked like it was chicken breast, but I wonder if it would have been tastier if it had been the moister dark meat (I'm a leg and thigh girl). The donburi came with a salad that had a delicious peanut dressing. They went a little heavy handed on the dressing as I found myself trying to wipe off excess dressing as I was eating. Coworker got the 2 item bento with chicken terriyaki and california rolls which she very much enjoyed. Terriyaki could have used a little more sauce. They also lost points because the service was a bit slower than I like and it wasn't very busy. At the end of the day, I'll probably end up coming back since it's relatively close to the workplace. Sushi Land is the sushi place I go to in the suburb when I don't feel like driving to Vic Sushi bar in Philly. I always have sushi there so I cannot say much about the non-sushi selections. My regular rolls are: rainbow roll, bay scallop roll, crazy monkey roll, and cherry blossom roll. Also, I am a big fan of their green tea fried cream. You have to try it! Why I am not giving it a 5 star: 1. Its food still cannot compare to Vic sushi bar's. 2. Due to its location, you can always find a lot of college kids here. I guess it depends on your personal preference. That could be a good or bad thing. 3. When they get super busy (most Fridays,) the wait is really long and most likely you will have to stand outside.

This is a decent sushi place. I ended up here one day with friends because it was the only sushi place open in the area in the late afternoon on Saturdays. The staff was friendly, the prices were reasonable, and the sushi is decent. It's not the best I've ever had, but it was tasty and fresh. And the miso soup was very flavorful. If you're looking for gourmet sushi, head to Blue Fin in Plymouth Meeting or one of the high-end sushi joints in Center City. But if you're looking for reasonably priced, adequate sushi near Bryn Mawr, Sushi Land is a good bet.

Great little BYOB that was within walking distance from my college. I live in Los Angeles now, surrounded by quality sushi joints, but I still find myself longing for the old days, where a decent roll could be had for $3. Sigh! Great green tea and miso soup, and I will always have a special place in my heart for the Bryn Mawr Roll. :)

Sushi Land is one of my favorite places, and whenever I'm in Philly and my boyfriend and I decide to get sushi, there's no question about where we're going. It's a small and unassuming place, but the sushi is fresh and VERY reasonably priced, especially their special rolls. They also have other Japanese cuisine items on the menu, but I've only been for sushi so I don't know the quality of those dishes. At this point, we've tried all their special rolls, and each one is delightful! They also offer a weekly special roll which is always creative and worth a try. However, what I really appreciate is that when I asked if they could make a custom roll for me since it wasn't on the menu, and they did! The staff is very polite, friendly and attentive, even when the place is packed (which it usually seems to be). Also, the edamame is clearly freshly steamed with your order - its the best edamame I've had at any sushi place I've ever been to! Quality place, I wish I lived nearby so that I could eat there more often!!!

The sushi here is low quality. The reviews are inflated by Villanova kids who don't know any better. We went here a year ago, and had a really bad experience. Based on inflated reviews, we decided to try Sushiland. We ordered a large assortment of Sushi, and it arrived very quickly. As we were eating, my seat was facing the Sushi bar. I noticed that one of the Sushi chefs kept putting his fingers next to his mouth. At first, it didn't register, but then I did a double take. Sushi chefs usually have a sponge to keep their fingers wet, but this guy was actually licking his fingers! I told my girlfriend that "we needed to leave now!" We didn't touch 3/4 of our sushi. I paid the bill, and we got out of there ASAP. I didn't tell her why until we got out the door. Needless to say, we will never be returning to Sushiland.

Good, cheap, no frills sushi. When we're craving sushi (which is quite often), we grab a bottle of wine and head here. The space is small but as a party of 2, we've never waited for more than 5 minutes. I would definitely not recommend for a larger group. Atmosphere isn't anything special so if you're looking for a nice date place, I would probably try one of the other sushi restaurants around. Would recommend for anyone who's looking to grab a casual, cheap, yummy sushi meal.

So I tried Sushi Land tonight....holy Villanova hangout. For a sushi restaurant in Bryn Mawr of all places, it's pretty damn good. Villanova roll was great, fish was fresh, and the price was right. It's a BYO after all; what do you expect?! When it comes to sushi, I'm spoiled (California sushi snob), but Sushi Land at least scratches that itch.

I am a big fan of sushi. I was told Sushi Land is a great sushi place for less money than a nearby japanese restaurant called Mikado. I am a big fan of Mikado but always up for a new experience. I had the pink lady roll and the Japanese marinated squash roll. I got out of there for about $16. The sushi was good.. but nothing extra special. I would definitely go to sushi land again, but I wouldn't take a friend from out of town there. There are several nearby unique sushi restaurants that would create a better experience. In conclusion, try Sushi Land out with a buddy from close by. Prices are pretty good, you might enjoy the chill sushi atmosphere better than the fancy decorations of a place like Mikado. Or you might be like me and be willing to pay a couple extra dollars for a unique experience.

Sushiland seem to be popular with the college crowd and it's easy to understand why. The price is cheaper than the other two surrounding sushi places- Samurai and Fujian mountain. The owner is a Korean single guy who is friendly and eager for business when he first opened ( he gave us free sampler rolls ). However, with his success, he is a little less friendly. We have been back with our kids many times but I think the quality has suffered a great deal. The sushi is definitely mediocre but what do you expect out of Philly suburb. None of the japanese restaurants are owned by actual Japanese - they are either Korean or Chinese.

Popular with Nova kids, Sushi Land's biggest draw is its price. It's OK if you need to save money and want a sushi joint that has a lunch special in the nabe. There's no real ambiance but the staff is friendly and responsive; and the sushi is decent. I wouldn't go for dinner though if you're expecting a "Dinner Experience."

Located in the suburbs of Philly, this tiny restaurant has been able to make its mark on the Main Line. Of my short sushi life experience, I've probably had the best sushi in my life at Sushi Land (although I'd rarely admit that little tidbit when I'm in New York City). The service can be slow at times but the food makes up for it and goes beyond. You're better off starting without an appetizer and heading straight for its (special) rolls. The crunch roll (shrimp tempura) is good beginner - just imagine texture and taste. All of the special rolls have as their name suggests, special names (Halloween roll, 76er's roll, etc...). My favorites are the Pink Lady and Spice Girls. Dessert is a must try if you've never had green tea tempura ice cream. If you get it right, then it's guaranteed to make you want to come back for more. There are days when the sushi isn't as good and the wait is long. But, it's still pretty damn tasty.

Those who criticize the sushi as inferior to that on the West Coast are right, BUT this is the best sushi I've had in the Philly area. There's a ton of variety on the menu, both in terms of sushi and non-sushi options. I go hot and cold with sushi, but I've never been disappointed here - no matter what I order. The noodle bowls are excellent, as are the rice bowls - both of which provide several meals' worth of food for the same price as an order of the Lion King roll (which is awesome, btw.) Also good are the bento boxes, if you're in the mood for a bit of everything (miso soup, salad, tempura, AND sushi or sashimi! And it only sets you back about $8.) The place is always clean when I'm there, and even when I've come on a weekend for dinner, I've been seated promptly. The atmosphere is a bit bland, but it's a perfect place for lunch. If you're coming here, do yourself these favors: 1) Take advantage of the BYOB policy 2) Go easy on the main course so you have room for the Tempura Ice Cream. It's their signature green tea ice cream, fried, and it tastes like heaven wrapped in crunchy cake bits. Even after sharing it with the rest of my party, I still felt like I needed to be rolled home - but man, was it worth it.

This is by far the best sushi I have found anywhere, period. I have been to California, DC and Philly and not ever found such creative and wonderful rolls. There is a new roll special every week and every time it's great. The staff is great, and Jae is amazing. They remember your name and what you like after a few visits. It's a little bit of a drive for me, but worth it every time. Outside of the food being great the prices are more than reasonable. For not as good sushi in the city or even down the street you would end up with a bill probably 20% higher. I highly recommend the Lion King Roll- It's basically a California roll with cooked wonderful magic on top:) It's great for the people who don't know they love sushi yet ;)

I'll start my review of Sushi Land with 2 caveats in its favor: 1. Coming from San Francisco, I am a sushi snob 2. Sushi here was as good as any other sushi I've had in the Philly burbs - so, maybe this is 4 or 5 star sushi for Philly.. but, I am holding back 2 stars, because I am holding out hope that this area must have better. Back to the review... Sushi Land is average sushi - not bad, not great, not particularly creative or interesting. It feels like a college-town place (which makes sense, given its location :-) - with good prices and no atmosphere. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd regularly get take-out from here and say "pretty good" every time I took a bite of their Villanova roll or weekly special. But, to the yelpers who give it 5 stars or say it can hold a candle to the best of San Francisco, New York or even DC... let me show you the light and give you some recommendations in those towns!

Who would have thought that some of the best sushi I've ever had I could find on Lancaster Avenue in Bryn Mawr, only a few blocks away from campus? Well, Sushi Land DELIVERS, every time. From the miso soup and seaweed salad for starters, and the vast selection of various rolls, no wrong can ever be done. I agree with Ben B. that the Villanova roll is amazing, along with the dragon roll. A friendly staff (Jay is a character), cozy atmosphere, and convenient location round up the good things. Gets a little crowded on the weekends as most other Lancaster Ave. spots do, but it's worth the wait.

The sushi is average and the restaurant itself is slightly lacking in cleanliness. Jae is a good kid from the Bay and used to work at some restaurants in Alameda I used to frequent. Unfortunately the type of sushi he would like to make just doesn't work in Philly or the mainline for that matter. With that said, the sushi is affordable but the selection of fish is seriously lacking. This is a good spot for very affordable run of the mill sushi. A typical college campus joint.

Yes, this is the sushi spot I run to when I get a hankering. It's close, good, and affordable. It's a comfortable little byob in the heart of Bryn Mawr. Jae, a Korean Californian transplant mans the sushi bar. I've mostly had the sushi here, so I can't say much about the non-sushi offerings. I had the agedashi tofu and can't recommend it. Also, their house salad dressing is a bit weird... it's nutty and not gingery. I'm not a fan. I am a fan of their rolls... they have a pretty large variety and also have specials. I am a huge fan of the villanova roll and the mexican roll. They also have all-you-can-eat sushi sometimes, if you're into that sort of thing. I would give this place 5 stars but the service can be spotty at times. And they play some terrible korean pop music. This place is also overrun by Villanova, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr students. I don't know about you, but I sure as hell couldn't afford to eat sushi when I was in college! Must be nice, you trust fund babies!

We venured away from our usual place and really wish we hadn't. Not only were the rolls smaller than our favorite place but they didn't taste nearly as good. There are better sushi restaurants in the area.

Sushi Land is pretty decent. Being the only Japanese restaurant in the area, there's really no other alternatives. I've only been here once, and I had the fried calamari, and a few of their rolls. The restaurant itself is pretty cramped and there was a lot of people when I went. The waitress' are really nice and extremely fast with my order requests. The sushi it self was pretty good. It wasn't the best sushi I've ever had, but it's definitely one of the best I've had in Philadelphia. The prices on the rolls were typical. Whenever I go out to Japanese restaurants I expect to spend about 25$ a person. That's how much the pro-rated bill came down to. Too bad they don't deliver, it's way too cold to walk all the way to sushi land, but I expect to go there a lot more during the summer times.

It looks like I'm in the minority here, but I didn't care for Sushi Land. I've only been there once, but the sushi was not great -- it was mushy, and the rolls were kind of sloppy. I know those are not great descriptions, but sushi for me is all about texture and presentation, and they were poor on both. In particular, the spicy tuna roll (one of my all time favorites) was just lousy. The price was very reasonable, which was a plus. In the area, I prefer either Samurai down the street on Lancaster or Fuji Mountain. Both cost more that Sushi Land, so that's a factor. Based on the other reviews, I'll try Sushi Land again, but until I've done so, I'm ranking them down. They get the second star because at least they're not expensive.

I've had great sushi there, and just average, depends on the visit or the order. I just finished take out Jessica roll (spicy crabmeat and crunch) and the crabmeat was the fake kind (which I'm not totally adverse to) but it was mixed with something creamy.....it was good, but I thought it would be a lot better. I do agree that it's a poor mans sushi, but it does sufffice, I think once you find your favorite, just stick to it.

I had very low expectations when I saw this tiny sushi spot with a name that's out of a corny movie or citcom, but wow this place is great! We tried a number of different rolls and to our delight they were some of the best I've had in some time. The staff was nice and the place is clean enough, great spot!

Two words: Jessica Rolls. There are a lot of things I like about this restaurant, but that particular dish is why I kept coming back throughout college. I tried many of the other rolls, but this was the one I kept returning to. Other noteworthy dishes include the miso soup and the tempura ice cream. I'm a fan of the tea as well. The house salad is pretty good, but it's not something I seek out. I wasn't as impressed with the gyoza or the teriyaki. But I honestly did not care about those two as long as Sushi Land kept serving Jessica Rolls. Some things to be aware of: The restaurant is small, and the tables serve four at most. (They can be moved together, but I don't recommend going in huge groups. It's really more suited for going with small groups of friends.) You should plan ahead to go within the 5 pm - 6 pm time block. Otherwise you WILL face an onslaught of Villanova students.

Sushi Land is the best sushi on the Mainline, hands down! The prices and neon "Sushi Land" sign suggest this spot would be a dive but it is a total home-run. Great unique special rolls are amazing - I recommend the French Kiss, Honeymoon, Dynamite, and Pink Lady. Service is quick and friendly with a casual, BYOB atmosphere. Sushi Land is a once a week staple in my restaurant line up!!!!

Edit 4/26/08 So I finally made it to dinner at Sushi Land, and I'm going to keep it at 4 stars. The sushi is solid, not super amazing, and fairly inexpensive. The BYOB part is fantastic though and our bottle of Racer 5 (beer) went perfectly with the spicy rolls. Also, since there's not a ton to do around Bryn Mawr late at night - note that the people watching here is FANTASTIC. Really. Young liberal undergrads. Tipsy, older people with box wine. Better than a movie. --------------------- I don't feel like I can legitimately give out the 5 stars until I do a full on dinner here, but after a great lunch on Thursday, I'll definitely make it back. Quick summary - great food, terrible europop on the soundtrack. The lunch deals (and even dinner priced sushi from the looks of the menu) are wonderfully affordable. All of the make was made with quality fish = tasty! The beef teriyaki in my bento box was well perfectly done.

Sushi is low grade; if you want to eat sushi on a budget its a great place to go, but I can't go there again knowing that Fugi Mountain is right around the corner...

This is what i wrote about this place about a year ago: "Best sushi that can be found on the Mainline so far as i have seen. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. They consistently offer a good meal every time which rarely happens with most places." More recently, the food has gone down hill. Rice was overcooked and the fish was not very fresh. TMI WARNING!!! I had a moderate case of diarrhea the next day as well. I don't think i m going back again. Its a shame because it used to be one of my favorites on the mainline:(

I'm not a big sushi eater, but I'll go to appease my friends. One of the reasons why I enjoy Sushi Land is that they're non-sushi options are just as appetizing. I recommend the edamame (perfectly salted), miso soup, and chicken teriyaki. The menu is cheap, and my friends say it's the best and most affordable sushi around. Sushi Land also does take out, which is a huge plus when you don't have time to sit down. One of its main attributes it the fact that it's a BYOB. In fact, the reason I gave it five stars is that Jae, the head chef, enthusiastically did a round of sake bombs with me and my friends one night after the place had emptied out. That alone is worth the highest rating.

Maybe the chefs that work the lunch shift are just bad, but every time I've gone here the food has been terrible. I used to go about once a month when I worked down the street, as it opened at the same time as my lunch break (I'd have gone to Samurai if it opened early enough!) The rolls were messy without fail -- the rice would fall apart, all the contents would be spilling over the top (not because they stuffed a lot in, just because it was poorly made). I rarely ordered special rolls, either; These were basic eel and spicy tuna rolls! Also, the chirashi was average at best. The worst experience I had here, though, was the time they served me rancid spicy tuna. I mean this stuff was so bad that when I got back to work, everyone in the lunch room started gagging. By this time, my lunch break was mostly gone and it was too late for me to go back and complain. I haven't been back since! So like I said, maybe the dinner sushi chefs are better. All the positive reviews here really surprised me, so maybe I should give them a second chance and hit them up in the evening. BUT if you're looking for a tasty sushi LUNCH, I'd recommend Mikado in Ardmore or Samurai right down the street in Rosemont!

With not too many places to get lunch in the area, Sushi Land has saved me many many times. I work close by and this is a really great lunch place, casual and clean with a friendly staff. Their sushi actually is really very good. Their miso soup is amazingly flavorful, I highly recommend it. You can get the soup and two rolls for about 10 bucks. They have other lunch deals on teriyaki bento boxes but being a creature of habit stick to my usual spicy tuna roll, avocado roll and miso soup. Yum.

What happened to you, sushiland? We're sad to say that the last several times we've gone here, the sushi kinda went downhill - the fish wasn't as fresh, and the rice was pasty. Definitely not the same sushi we had before. Maybe we just hit the place at bad times - but it's been three times in a row, and I'm not willing to go back anymore. I'm sorry to say that we are on the hunt for a new sushi spot.

HIT THIS PLACE IN THE SUMMER when all the Villanova kids have finally cleared out of there. Make sure that Jay himself is behind the counter making your sushi. The rolls are all good and VERY reasonably priced, especially if you've tried to buy food in OTHER restaurants in Bryn Mawr. A great place to be a regular, but again, once the school year starts up you have to be early or lucky to get a table. The wait staff and other help seems to rotate, so again, make sure Jay is in the house!

good for cheapish sushi and a fun dining experience, but when I went (on admittedly a busy night) the service wasn't great, the coke seemed watered down, and the mochi ice cream didn't have a good texture. still, good food and will go again.

I don't eat fish so usually I am pretty easily pleased at sushi places if I can get some good veggie rolls. Strangely here I have not been impressed. The more I go to other sushi restaurants and try their food, the more I am left feeling that Sushi Land is mediocre. I do keep coming back though because it is only a short walk from school and I get tired of dining hall food. Hopefully Yelp can point me in the direction of other nearby yummy sushi.

first let me start off by saying that i signed up on yelp just so that i could write a review for Sushi Land. Two friends and I were really craving some sushi last night...and being relatively new to the area, I decided to do some research and see what I came up with. I came across Sushi Land and we were all very skeptical of the based just because of the name...doesnt sound too enticing. We checked out the menu and were impressed with the selection and the prices so we gave it a shot. WOW! I am an avid sushi lover and am very picky and this place 100% satisfied me. The service was fast and friendly, and each roll was amazing. We had the halloween, hurricane, french kiss, lancaster, and a few other rolls (total of 5 special rolls, 1 reg roll, and edamame) and our total was only $53!! I have NEVER seen a place that prices their SPECIAL rolls at $8.50! My only complaint was the atmosphere...it is small, non decorative, quiet, and kind of felt like a cafeteria almost. but WHO CARES when youre getting sushi that good and that low of a price. Needless to say-- i will definitely be returning!
