This is probably the best "Chinese food" (term used very lightly) in the valley. After moving to Oregon from the San Francisco area nearly twenty five years ago I fell into a void of Chinese restaurants that served an Americanized version of the cuisine. Silver Dragon falls in that category with corn starch battered chicken covered with fluorescent sauces, crispy Chun King noodles and gooey bean sprouts in too many dishes. That being said there are a couple of stand outs that make it tolerable for me to get an Asian fix that is edible. Chicken Low Mein (have the sprouts left out) is close to a modern chicken chow mein in larger cities with pan fired soft noodles, chicken and a good noodle/meat to veggie ratio. (If all else failed I could live on this.). Sesame Beef. Again, better than the local average. Good flavor. I have the veggies left out of this one. And I'll admit I even eat the fluorescent colored sauce on the corn starch battered sweet and sour chicken. Now that I've found these few items (that would actually get four stars) I an satisfy my Chinese food cravings close to home. BUT, what the hell is "pink sauce"? If any of my Chinese friends were to see this concoction they'd be on the first sampan back to Hong Kong.

I was visiting medford and looked up chinese food. I didn't have very high hopes at first. I came in after 9:30pm and was told that they were only doing take out so decided to order to go. I ordered walnut shrimp, mixed vegetables, fried rice, chow fun, lettuce wrap, mongolian beef and something else (forgot). The food was surprisingly good. The only one that didn't taste right was the lettuce wrap but everything else reminded me of a good HK style food in the SF Bay Area.

I used to love this place. As a member of the LGBTQA community, I felt acceptance in this restaurant for over 20 years. That all changed after a server by the name of Zane commented on her belief that transgendered individuals who kill themselves are weak and if they have enough strength to have a sex change they need to be able to take the heat. I am sick to my stomach and shocked by the bigotry and the ignorance. I will never be back. I can't even bear to darken the doorway of this place that holds so many good memories anymore. Any business that condones this type of attitude shouldn't be in the service industry. You have lost a faithful customer.

This review is for a visit awhile back, but I've just started using yelp more frequently and remembered how terrible my experience was, so sharing. -The selection was terrible. -my glass and fork were dirty. -my steamed veggies were mushy. -The service was poor at best. Never ever ever going back. Ever. Sorry guys. Step up your game please.

For Chinese food in Southern Oregon this place is fresh and on point. Super good. Lots of choices, always packed great service. I always order broccoli beef, fresh broc, clean pieces of beef. Shrimp fried rice has prawns. Nuff said.

Horrible experience. While eating dinner my daughter found 3 pieces of hair in her food. The waitress went to the kitchen and found the staff was not wearing their hair nets. She did comp the dish, mine as well as we had the same item. However, for the price the food is poor quality Obviously sanitation is not important to the kitchen staff, management and owners of the place. I not only will never return I plan on calling the health department and share our experience. I would of rated a zero, but it wasn't an option

Was just passing through town and because of the comments, we gave it a try. The lady is Asian so she's a lot bossy and straight to the point. If this is the best Chinese food in Medford, I'm very sorry. Its blah, sub-plain. Update It's 2:31am and my wife and are both sick with the dreaded D, yes diarrhea.

I really like this place. Fast, friendly, and with a family-style vegetarian meal option--a nice surprise for Southern Oregon. Also, it is really good! Fried rice was great, the green bean dish was spicy and I want it again soon!

Average "Americanized" Chinese food that, although not authentic or exceptionally tasty, at least is consistent and they have comfortable booths.

Do you like Chinese Food? If yes keep reading! Do you like nearly all your chinese "meat" foods deep friend? If yes Conitnue on this read? Do you appreciate not being able to tell one food from another? If yes, you know the drill Do you like shells still on your shrimp? If yes... go one more question Do you like noodles in your chow mein? If NO... THEN I HAVE THE PLACE FOR YOU! My wife and I joked when we pulled in about "oregon chinese food" little did we know.... So we went here with my wife and my brother and his family. Their food seemed already, my wife and I both got the dinner combo #5, I like shrimp and I love cashew chicken... so this had sweet and sour pork, shrimp and cashew chicken chow mein. Sounded like a sure fire win! They bring it out... the shrimp didn't taste to bad (not to good either). I noticed my wife wasn't eating much.... but I thought it was just because the Cashew Chicken Chow Mein was basically just celery and a couple pieces of chicken and a couple cashew, and maybe two noodles.... and she doesn't care for celery. She commented on having shells in her Shrimp.... then I took another bit and yep.... theres a shell. I really wasn't thrilled. The waitress could see my displeasure and asked how it was... I told her about the skin on the shrimp... her response was "yeah sometimes that happens.... and she walked away. About the only good thing I can say, is the portions of junk are pretty huge... the crab cream cheese wontons are hard to mess up so those were tasty... Other advice... DON'T GO HERE

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!! This place has basically made me lose all faith in Chinese-American fusion restaurants. The fried dishes (sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken) is all the same. No sauce, just deep fried meat! The worst part? I ordered fried shrimp with my meal, and they didn't even bother to peel it before frying it. Shells on my shrimp? No thanks! Waitresses didn't even care that our food was bad. They just said "it happens". well, it will never happen again!

I wish I could like this place again. I have been a loyal customers here for many years. But over the last 4-5 I have seen some serious quality issues pop up. When the problems first popped up i pushed them off as training a new cook. The food came out soggy and things that were supposed to be crispy were soft. Then the meat became tasteless and some were full of gristle. The last time I ate there I had their lunch special, pork fried rice, pork chow mein, and sweet and sour chicken. When I got the food it came out as what I would call a hot mess the rice had clumps of white rice all through it. The sweet and sour was soft and tasteless and must have only contained a tablespoon of red sauce. But that's ok because the pork chow mein had turned everything touching it to oily cream. so much so the hard noodles on bottom were soft and falling apart. it was bad somehow we choked down a small portion and left the rest asking that they keep the leftovers. Even though I have no proof, I have a strong suspicion that some of the food is reheated from the day before.

Will never return! There was hair in the middle of my dish. Enough said? Nasty!

Silver Dragon serves Americanized Chinese food; they even serve actual american food in the same restaurant! :) Don't mistake me; I don't mind Americanized Chinese food. I think they have their own place in this world! Some of them are very good. We had some take out on the way to Crater Lake; it was just okay. The egg foo young and the young-chow fried rice were A-okay. When we got back from the lake it was pretty late in Medford; this place was still open so we went back to dine in. And oh lord; it was a disaster; food was close to tasteless (ordered wonton noodles, sizzling shrimp and beef with broccoli). The sizzling shrimp was basically chopped up various veggies with some pretty bland sauce; shrimp tasted like it was boiled and poured over in there. And the sizzling part? A metal/plastic pan (clearly not meant for sizzling dishes) heated up and the dish poured on top of it to create the sizzling effect. But that's just it, it was just for show. It did not contribute anything to the dish; with just mere seconds the sizzling effect disappeared, and the pan turned cold. Another thing, the restaurant smells funny; reminiscent of old cabinets. The only thing that saved this establishment was the service! The server was cheerful, polite and attentive. Thank you for that at least.

One time I saw a guy out back slicing a giant carcass on the concrete, which grossed me out forever. Last time I ate here, there were literally bugs (ants and such) crawling on my table. I walked out. I give it 1 star because I've never been able to eat more than 1 bite in this place. Avoid it like the plague.

Against my better judgment, I tried Silver Dragon again for the first time in five years. Although unimpressed when I have ate here before, I thought maybe they would have improved. Nope. I spent $30 on food and threw most of it away. The beef in the fried rice was so gristly and had bone fragments or something crunchy in it. Grody to the max. Plus, after eating it I felt sick to my stomach. Maybe old cooking oil? Just yuck. The Orange chicken had an unappealing texture and smell. Taste was just not right. Decided to pitch after two bites. My chicken chow mein had zero flavor and was just not doing it for me. Potstickers were okay, but the meat was really fatty and gristly. The only thing I finished in the meal. How it stays Chinese Restaurant of choice for Medford I do not understand. Yummy Yans and even Panda Express is far better. I am done.

Best chinese food in Medford! We tried Yummy Yan's, New China and King Wah also. None of them even compare! We tried Panda Garden in Ashland it was good too but Silver Dragon is better! ;) We tried their pork fried rice, almond chicken chow mein, pork chow mein, mar far chicken and sweet and sour chicken. It was all great! Even the fortune cookies were good (sweet) and I never eat those! There was no need to add soy sauce to the rice either which I usually end up dokng elsewhere! We did the lunch special of picking 3 items each for less than $7 a person! Great prices! :D

I was in town fof a few nights and my friend and i decided to order Chinese for delivery. I called Silver Dragon and placed my delivery order. My food arrived and at first i was surprised at the portions are huge. I ordered Beef Chow Fun & my friend had Pork Fried Rice. She took 2 bites and threw it away, complaining how bland the fried Rice was. I tried my Chow Fun and was Bland and had a strange taste to it. There were so many raw onions in my food it was disgusting i proceeded to eat about 1/4 just because i was starving... Now were it gets bad!! Later that evening I got extremely nauseous and very ill. I got some kind of food poisoning from my food. I will NEVER eat here again!! BEWARE!!

Holy Food. They are not shy when it comes to portions. Food is above avg Americanized Chinese.

Tremendously bland, lacking in flavor, and generally an embarrassment to better Chinese food restaurants. For some reason, people flock to this place. My only guess is that their regulars have somehow missed out on real, savory Chinese food. I mean really. Mar Far Chicken? Pink sauce? Get that garbage outta here! Pick any generic Chinese restaurant in a major city, and it's highly likely their food is better than Silver Dragon. In fact, their food is so bland and unimaginative, I often choose Panda Express over SD -- which isn't to suggest that Panda Express is somehow representative of good Chinese food. Cheap, Americanized, and totally bland. Fine if you don't know any better.

Reminds me of Chun King! (you know, in the can.) Bland, Soggy and Generic. The fact that is the mail tribune's top Chinese in Medford for years running means that either the voting is rigged or the fine folks of Medford just don't know good chinese food. Just up the road is Yummy Yan which, while not authentic, is significantly better.

We've tried the fare here three times now and are still searching for someone in Medford who can prepare Chinese food with flavor. That pretty much says it all, but being more specific, the Chow Fun was rubbery and bland and the Stringbean Chicken was also flavorless. We had lunch in Sacramento last week and the food in the small downtown restaurant far surpassed that found at the Silver Dragon...at half the price! Those reviewers who suggest that meals at the Silver Dragon are anything but substandard obviously haven't had any good Chinese for comparison purposes. I would not recommend this restaurant for Chinese food!

Have been eating here for years for lack of good chinese food in Medford. But I am tired of MSG even though I always say NO when I order and being "nickel and dimed" to death. We always order the same family dinner with the same substitutions, but are always charged a different price! The final straw was being charged for chili sauce when the "medium hot" item was too bland to eat. Next there will be a charge for soy sauce! Be careful here.

I'm new to the area and haven't eaten at other Chinese restaurants in this area.. I ordered it to go, overall it was pretty good. I had chicken curry over panfried noodles, I was disappointed because my noodles weren't pan fried(they put my panfried noodles in my husbands order). The meal was pretty good, it could have had more chicken which I'm not like a crazy meat eater and I noticed that it was lacking chicken, the vegetables were delicious and perfectly cooked to my liking.. My husband got Mongolian beef, I tried a couple bites and wasn't impressed, mostly because I've had much better Mongolian beef where we were from.. He said it was really good and he enjoyed it. Overall we were happy with the experience at Silver Dragon.. I did think some prices were a little high up there for being as Americanized as it was.. However I was very pleased with the size portion you get.. I'd say for an order in Chinese place its definitely somewhere I would order from again.. Hope this review helped :)

Great service your food gets out super fast, you don't get free refills on your sodas which is lame. I always go with the combos for lunch and Dinner the trick is you have got to get ur chow mein with pan fried noodles and brown sauce which is free. If you ask for chili paste is .50 just so you know. The food is cheap and huge portions I always leave full. Its not fine dining but its a good restraunt.

We have been eating at Silver Dragon for over 20 years and we find it to be very good. We moved here from Los Angeles and have eaten Chinese food all our life and prefer Cantonese style. I have never had any dish at Silver Dragon that I did not like. I do have my favorites though. The Special House Chow Mein is awesome. As is the Twice Cooked Pork. The Hot and Sour soup is fabulous. Won Ton Soup is delicious and the Pot Stickers are very good and not frozen from a supplier. Unfortunately they do not serve BBQ Pork Ribs. I usually have the Combo Special which consists of Chicken Chow Mein, Pork Fried Rice, Fried Prawns and Sweet and Sour Pork. Plenty of food for two people. Like any other restaurant, it receives good and bad reviews. No matter how good or bad any restaurant is this is going to happen. People have different tastes and expectations. If you like Hunan or Szechuan style you may not like Cantonese. Or visa versa. Of all the Chinese places in the Rogue Valley this is our favorite. UPDATE: 3-9-14 The quality of the food has fallen off a bit. It is now hit and miss if the food will be what it used to be. We no longer eat any of the soups other than Hot & Sour. The broth for the other soups has absolutely no flavor. Hot & sour is good sometime and not others. We are trying other places and have so far had good luck at the New China Restaurant. Reading that the fried prawns, which in the past have been very good, now have shells still on them is ridiculous. I'm very sorry this place is not what it used to be.

ordered the wonton soup to go it was tasteful but disappointed that we hardly had any broth it was more of a side than a soup. Perhaps it's more of a soup if you it there.

Stopping in Medford for the night and the wife thinks some Chinese sounds good. MY GOD WOMAN WE ARE IN MEDFORD not San Fran. But ok I will check the reviews on yelp and see what choices we have. Hmm not much but the Silver Dragon looks like it may be the best so let's go. Pull in and the parking lot on a tuesday i jammed packed. This maybe a good sign. So we park and go in. They are waiting out the door. This must be something good. We get in and order and it is good. In fact it is very good and I must say it was better than 95% of the places in Portland. The name says Silver Dragon American-Chinese Food which it was. Not Asian Fusion. For what it is it is very good. Thanks yelpers for the reviews.

Silver Dragon is the only Chinese restaurant I trust in Southern Oregon. Every course was an absolute delight. The hot and sour soup was wonderful, and the chicken dishes were tasty, too! It had been awhile since I actually had tasty Chinese food, as most of the other places in the Rogue Valley have been less than stellar. To our delight, it wasn't ridiculously pricey, either! We walked away with full bellies and half-full wallets.

This place serves some of the best Mar Far Chicken. I am sure that it is Americanized version but it is great. The night we came in was Friday after thanksgiving and it was buzzing busy. my party ordered the family style menu A for 3 and we had tons left over. I on the other hand did not go with the family style and ordered the Mar Far chicken and pork fried rice for myself and it was fantastic. They have the orange sauce that was famous at Kim's Chinese now closed but I remember as a kid. overall a great place to eat and my wife and I try and get in here every time we are in town. If you were a fan of Kim's this place to me is the continuation of that tradition. Silver Dragon is clean and friendly, it gets a bit warm from the kitchen and steam but they open the windows and it is bearable. Bring your appetite because this place will fill you up. Big Mike

Crap! That is the only word to describe this bland, strange take on Chinese food. The fried rice has no flavor, the chow mein is a weird mix of bean sprouts, onions with a white sauce poured over dried noodles. The soup and sweet and sour chicken was OK, but in the history of eating Chinese food this is the first time that we had tons of left overs and opted to leave them there. I am ending my review short because I wish to forget this experience immediately. Do yourself a favor and stay clear!

I have to agree with Lenny G here. the popularity of this joint is inexplicable to me. my wife and I tried to get a feel for the basics, and there was just no flavor. I barely made a dent in mine and just couldn't get any further. if you're looking for good Chinese, try the Thai House in Jacksonville instead. it's worth going out of the way for.

  • Mark L.

Typical of "Chinese" food in Medford, the dishes consist of slightly warm, slimy vegetables and low grade gristly beef. There is no atmosphere to speak of. The prices are low however - you get what you pay for.

Bored with most of the food in this valley, we decided to give Silver Dragon another shot based on the two Yelp reviews. The waitresses were small-town friendly and the portions were huge. Although we're having a cold spring, it was hot inside the restaurant and very stuffy. We ordered the corn chowder to start, "good choice" beamed the server, and it was delicious. We three could not finish it. Sizzling chicken & shrimp, and two spicy choices quickly emerged from the kitchen, dry string beans and Mongolian beef. We're all suckers for watching and hearing stuff sizzling on a hot platter, and will usually order one if available. Although this one looked and sounded great, it offered little in the taste department. To its credit the dish included some great veggies, but by the time hot sauce arrived it had lost its pizzazz. The beef was tender as advertised, but overall the dish was too sweet; no match for the same dish Golden Dynasty offered under its previous ownership. Like the beef dish, the formerly frozen beans were bland with little claim to deserving a "spicy" star on the menu. The Rogue Valley is home to a handful of these Americanized chow mein joints. We deserve better imho.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
