Overpriced, watered down coffee, the worst sausage gravy I've ever had. When did the gravy go from white to brown? This place and many other chains similar to it are far from the mom and pop places that serve a truly homemade breakfast and not an super inflated prices. I don't understand WHY people go to these places. We only did because for whatever reason, Portsmouth is lacking in mom/pop breakfast diners. The only thing awesome about this place- the wonderful waitress! She was so nice, engaging...and we didn't have to wait. : )

The local Bob Evan's has often been touted as a casual Sunday-style restaurant. In a previous incarnation Bob Evan's featured pictures from the local community of Portsmouth, Ohio, but after a recent remodeling that created a more open, naturally lit dining area, such local nuances have been removed. While the natural lighting is nice, the restaurant now feels more corporate and less home-like. The breakfast menu is overwhelming, but are still very much along the lines of traditional breakfast foods such as biscuits, sausage, steak, and eggs. Great if you are looking a heavy breakfast, not so great if you are a traveler looking for a light breakfast from a company with a reputable name. While the breakfasts are traditional, the serving sizes are not; they are enormous and best split between several people. While splitting the servings, you may also want to split the bill. The golden goose must have laid those eggs... The establishment is typically clean, although the air does seem leave a greasy sheen on you so you smell like Bob Evan's when you leave. The bathrooms are clean. The servers seem to be in a hurry to get you seated, and take your order (they came to the table 4 times in 5 minutes), but after the order was placed they didn't come back until the order was filled...some 27 minutes later. No refills on coffee or water. Keep in mind, there were only two people at our table, and only a total of 5 people in the restaurant. Not peak hours... Our overall impression of this Bob Evan's location is that it's primary target demographic is older (65+) people who eat out less than once a week, and particularly budget to eat at Bob Evan's based upon the fact they offer Traditional American foods. The quality, quantity, and cost of foods is corporate regulated and do not adequately reflect the median cost of dining in the area at comparable establishments. It is assessed that the quality of service lacks due to staffing levels. During off-peak hours less staff are assigned to minimize overhead and those that are assigned are given additional taskings to compensate for lack of staffing. As a result, quality of service suffers.

Nice down home feeling, but the food and service lacked tremendously. We were quickly seated however it took at least 10 minutes before our drink order was taken. We ordered the typical breakfast fare. In about 15 minutes we received both our meals and the bill. No refills, no sorry about the wait, just our food and the bill. I don't know if this is typical of Bob Evans or if this was just a rare mishap but I know that from dining in various establishments that the bill is only given after it appears that the diners are ready to leave. The meals looked as though they had been prepared in a high school cafeteria, hurriedly made. And while the portions were more than enough for two people the food didn't have the "down home" flavor that the decor would lead to be believe it would have. To be honest, the food tasted institutional; like what you would expect from a hospital or a soup kitchen: bland but filling. Combining the "sit here and wait" customer service, lack of even a single refill of drinks, the bill at the time the food was served, and lackluster food quality, I've struggled to give this business even two stars. In summary this Bob Evans locations is nothing more than fast food for old people who aren't worried about how fast their food is served or whether or not the price of the food is a reflection of its quality or the quality of service.
