My wife and I had a $20 Yelp voucher for this St. Paul establishment. We got there about 11:20 and pulled on the door handle. Locked. Weird. A hostess ran to the door and opened it up for us. "We are open!" The place is huge, there is a big bar in the middle with seating off to the left and what kind of looks like a dance area off to the right. I sat down and they actually have a Michelada menu! Awesome! My favorite Mexican drink in about 10 varieties! I ordered the traditional Michelada with the Clamato included. In Mexico, they usually just do lime juice, Worechester sauce, soy sauce, Tabasco and a lager beer. I ordered mine with Pacifico, my favorite Mexican lager. It just sings the flavor of Mazatlan. The Michelada was super refreshing and had the traditional rimming of chili salt. Traditional and amazing. It tasted like a fruit cocktail! So good. This place is known for their authentic seafood meals, so I ordered the two shrimp tacos and a tripe taco, just to weird things up. Unfortunately they were out of tripe. Boo. This is the second Mexican restaurant that has been out of tripe in 2 months that I have been eating Mexican. Is there a run on cow stomach? I asked if they had some hotter salsa, as the salsa and chips were very Minnesotan. The hot salsa was just perfect! A solid Azteca flavor, a little bit of smokiness and heat and a little thicker than the super mild stuff that originally came out. I ordered a big Pacifico draft to go with my meal. Love this stuff. Super light and also refreshing. The shrimp tacos came out perfectly plated. Two small corn tortillas underneath each topping of fresh shrimp with lots of lettuce and other toppings. I added some of the hot sauce and it also came with a wonderful creme sauce with a touch of heat. Delicious. Each bite was super flavorful. Wonderful. My wife got the peel and eat shrimp and it came with a beautiful scoop of rice in the middle, surrounded by about 10 huge shrimps, butterflied to perfection. I know she hates when they leave the veins in the shrimp, and I could see in her face that she was pleased. They had slices of cucumber and tomatoes lining the rim of the plate. Really pretty. She made me a taco with her side of corn tortillas and it was also fantastic. Each bite was a burst of shrimpy perfection. Our server checked on us a couple of times and was super nice. She refilled my wife's Diet Coke a few times. A+. We were the only patrons in the place, so this may have been why the great service, but I loved it. They have lots of TVs lining the walls and ESPN was on. Nice! They also had some Mexican soccer games on other TVs. A solid authentic meal! It was about a $34 meal if there was no voucher and after a 20% tip.

Taking hope from the positive reviews, and the online menu, I went to Las Sirenas on a Friday night around 8:30. The parking lot was fairly empty - a red flag - but I persevered. There were only three tables with patrons. My companion and I were promptly seated (although we had to wait for the table and seats to be cleaned). We had a new waitress - day 2 for her. She was woefully unprepared. We had chips with a tiny cup of salsa. The waitress was attentive, but didn't know the menu at all. I suggested she go ask someone about our questions. The music was extremely loud. Based on other reviews, I knew about the karaoke, so I had called ahead and was assured it was in the nightclub downstairs, and that the dining area was quieter. We asked to have the music turned down a little, which it was, but then shortly after was cranked up higher than when we entered. There was no bar crowd at that time, just a few diners trying to talk above the music. I ordered a Mojito. After some time, I was informed they had no mint. Not wanting to push my luck, I ordered a Pinot Grigio. After a bit, another waitress came by and asked what I had ordered, as our waitress had forgotten. I repeated my order. My waitress returns with a glass of pinot noir. I sent it back for "white", not "red". Along the way, I had slipped out to the bathroom to wash my hands. It was not sparkling, to be kind. Actually, the whole place was a little grimy. However, I am willing to overlook a lot to have awesome food, IF I have awesome food. Ever the optimist, I told my companion that they might redeem themselves with the food. Alas, wrong again. I had the shrimp enchiladas. They tasted meh; I was told I would get three and I got two. The refried beans - my favorite - were soupy. Since we were given only a fork and a knife, I tried to use the chips to eat them, but they dribbled off. My companion ordered a chimichanga, but got an overstuffed burrito. It was 80% rice, if not more, The sparse chicken was not tasty; the whole thing was bland and unappetizing. I was so embarrassed for having made the restaurant choice that I insisted on paying for the meal. The waitress got a 10% tip only because she was new, and wasn't responsible for cooking the food. We were there 1.5 hours for that little bit of a meal. Oh, and sometime after 9, the waitresses changed into hot pink bustiers for the bar crowd, which was just starting to roll in as we left. A very young and unsophisticated crowd was trickling in. I won't be back. There were too many negatives to rate a second chance. As I paid the bill, I remarked that my $40 was completely wasted.

This place has changed a lot since we visited last. New name, new menu, new atmosphere. We brought some friends here for a late lunch/early dinner. It wasn't real busy at all. Dining room has plenty of places to choose from, or if you choose, you can sit at the bar. The back room seems to be more of a stage or more for live entertainment. Service was pretty good. After our server left, we were sitting there for a bit and another one came and offered to see if we needed anything else. The menu is more coastal Mexican with an emphasis on more seafood inspired dishes which makes it more pricey. Ordered some calamari which I love. Theirs was just okay. Nothing to really write home about. I have to say, I've had better. This just didn't have a ton of flavor and the sauce that came with it wasn't my cup of tea. I ordered the Tampiquena platter. The flank steak was super chewy and very hard to cut. Nice flavor, but really grisly. The enchilada that accompanied it had a strange taste to it. Rice was good. My fellow diners ordered the seafood enchiladas which looked good and were devoured. One ordered the combination fajitas which looked good. Shrimp, chicken and steak. Lots of meat. I wasn't overly wowed by the food. It was still good, but I can't constitute being a fan just yet.

I had the aguachile cerviche. Dining partner had the shrimp enchiladas. Plus 2 margaritas. The bill was $55 including a tip. Which seems to be a lot since you could get the same thing on Lake Street for a lot less. We went on a Friday night. There was one server and a bartender running back and forth to the kitchen, and there were only 6 customers in the whole place. Kinda dismal really. But $55? wow. The website shows how food stylists make their money.......

Went tonight for dinner with the sister and brother-in-law to use a Groupon. Our server, Roberto, was so nice and really attentive. He did a good job of recommending amount of food and what he liked. We had Cadillac margaritas, very tasty and not the syrupy crap you get in other places. We shared guacamole and shrimp in garlic sauce to start. Good chips and fresh avocados. I had enchiladas with chorizo for my entrée. He warned me it was smaller but I figured it was the right amount since we had so much other food. There was a nice heat to it with the green sauce. The refried beans were good and I usually find restaurants don't do these justice. I tried my sister's snapper and it had a nice flavor. The BF's crab was good as well. We shared churros (ok) and caramel crepes (good) for dessert. The desserts were fine but I would probably skip them next time and eat more chips. I would go back for the late-night music or karaoke!

Impressed. Very impressed. My friend and I decided to visit for dinner as we had an event in the area and were pressed on time. From the moment we walked in I was happy with our choice. The service was quick and friendly, the menu had so many delicious choices we had to take a few extra moments to make a decision several times (and not once did the server seem irritated), and everything was beyond my expectations. Citrus salad with chili dusted shrimp? Simple yet vibrant. Balanced. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. Chicken tacos? The chicken was seasoned well and not a piece of it was over/under cooked. The pico complimented the protein well and added brightness to each bite. And the dish came with radish sliced that seemed super fresh rather than the dried out slices served at other locations. But I save the best for last... And while I cannot remember the name I will be searching for something like it back home. Tilapia 'relleno' stuffed with crab and cheese and topped with a light chili creme sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly which is extremely difficult to do when you dry anything. The stuffing and chili sauce didn't overwhelm the fish but instead elevated the dish to something I would have paid double for. Las Sirenas if you would ever like to open a location in Seattle I will do your publicity. True story.

This was a very good experience for us the first time here. If you are just going to order tacos like a typical American - or the negative reviewers here - then you might just miss some of the best authentic seafood dishes you will find here in the Twin Cities. I mean, how do you go to an establishment serving up Aguachile, Ceviche, Oysters and more from a wonderful Raw Bar selection, and not take advantage of ordering it!! The Jumbo Prawn, Shrimp and Fish dishes were enjoyed by our whole table, and the Mole and Carnitas were as authentic and tasty as any we have had anywhere here or south-of-the-border. I get really tired of even having to read reviews by people who come to a unique restaurant like this, order a freakin' taco and attempt to write a fair review - puhleeazz!! If you were even half as much more adventurous than that, maybe your opinion would be worth the time to read. Folks, take it from a group who have traveled the coasts of Mexico together and know and appreciate the real deal - and give this place a try ... Service and food were wonderful, we loved it!

We had a fair sample of dishes here. And can tell you: there is no talent in the kitchen of Las sirenas. Maybe worst was the fajitas. Served cold. I sent it back. They heated up the skillet to get everything sizzling. But this treatment left everything burnt on one side. And yuck!

Warning! Don't go to Las Sirenas! I suppose our evening at Las Sirenas started off well. Sorta. Once upon a earlier today, my boyfriend and I went to eat at Las Sirenas. No one greeted us, but someone came from the kitchen, he said we could seat ourselves wherever. We grabbed a menu and had a seat. We ordered Calamari, three entrees and one desert. Calamari ($12) came out, there were three pieces on the very large plate. The rest was onion. We decided to not be negative about it. Three entrees came out, they were "eh". Tacos($6), molcajete de carnes($32), carmarones a la diva($16). Desert- we ordered the crepas($4.75), and they were out. We figured it was okay, so we decided to not have desert. We also had a groupon, $40 for $80, so it had a $80 value before the expiration date of 4/2/14. --And to clarify, the date I went to Las Sirenas is 11/7/2013, WELL before the expiration date. We gave the waitress my phone with the groupon, she returned with a receipt. They wanted to charged us $8.75 -- for a $70.75 meal--when we had a $80 groupon... whhhaaatttt. (Also they did not remove the desert we never got) Anyways, we ask the waitress why there was a charge, a man name Pablo approached us and said it was TAX. 10.75% in taxes. May I please refer you to the document below, on page two, "First subtract the coupon amount from the total price of the meal, and then calculate and add the sales tax. The coupon amount is not taxed. " THAT MEANS WE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TAXED. revenue.state.mn.us/busi… This is considered fraud. Anyways, we ask the stupid Pablo guy to remove the desert-- he refuses. We told him to confirm with the waitress that there was no crepas and she did. He took it off, we had to pay $7.01 in "taxes". If I could give this restaurant no star, I would. So disappointed, in my whole life, this is DEFINITELY the worse experience I have ever had. Groupon should check these itches out.

Today was my third visit to Las Sirenas. I had a Groupon and took two guests. Previous visits were very good but today I was very disappointed . The on line menu has calamari and fish tacos which I had on my last visit. Neither was on the new menu. I ordered the enchilada suizas, and was very disappointed. The waitress offer bring me something else and said I could get the fish tacos or shrimp taco. I asked for the shrimp taco and should have requested corn tortillas but they were were flour tortilla. I asked for them "to go" because my companions had finished their meals. They also were disappointed with their chimichanga and taco salad. When I got home I tried one of the tacos and then they went in the trash. There are many excellent Mexican restaurant in the area, but not this one, so my next visit will be to Boca Chica or Los Arcos

Nothing spectacular about the food or the environment. Menu does not match the web site, so what I had earlier been looking forward to was not even offered. Also, waitress/cook did not allow any side orders or substitutions, like black beans and rice as shown on the web site. Guacamole was tasteless, queso dip came with four small, folded flour tortillas which was not enough for the big bowl of dip, and the salsa wasn't anything different or special either. I had a chimichanga that was mushy and not crispy at all. It was filled with refried beans and rice plus there was refried beans and rice on my plate. Refried beans must have come out of a can or a jar, not homemade, that was another tasteless item. Even the margaritas were blah. This place can't compare to the Pepitos, La Casitas, La Cucaracha, or Acapulco restaurants in the area. Total for dinner with two margaritas, queso dip appetizer, small bowl of guacamole, one soggy/mushy disappointing chimichanga and a chicken/steak/shimp fajita dinner came to $60.50 without tip. Quality and diversity of the menu did not match the price. Food on the web site looked much more palatable. Menu was really hard to read and poorly organized and a number of things that were on the menu were not stocked and available.

Went on a Tuesday early evening with our Groupon voucher. Service was fine, our main complaint was the the "shipwrecked shrimp" my daughter ordered DID NOT come with anything - it was supposed to come with " potato lifeboats" , but it was just shrimp on a plate with some limes. We checked with the waitress, she said nothing comes with it, we asked she check with the kitchen, she did and said the same thing! $13 for some shrimp on a plate? No accompaniments, barely any garmish, no rice or beans?? Our bill seemed high even with the coupon. With so many places to pick from, won't go back again.

We went on a Monday night. There was no loud karaoke as others have complained about and it wasn't overly busy. The food was fantastic. More authentic Mexican/Central American than we've experienced before in the Twin Cities. We ordered the guacamole made at the table, fresh and wonderful. Entrees were the tropical fish filet (tilapia with pineapple salsa) and the amazing Cochinita Pibil (a Mayan dish w/citrus marinated carnitas, black beans, rice, plantains, and habanero/onion slaw). This was very similar to what we've enjoyed in Belize, Cozumel, and along the Yucatan coast. My advice? Spend a little money, don't order the typical Americanized fare, be adventurous. Don't be in a hurry, good food takes time. Although the service was excellent, their kitchen is a little slow, thus the 4 stars instead of 5. And go on a Monday night!

Accidentally stumbled across this place on the way to Comcast. They had a banner advertising a lunch buffet. Always thought that would be a good concept since it seems to work so well with Indian and Chinese food. Anyway, read the reviews on here and decided to give it a try anyway since I've learned that sometimes there is an inverse relationship between the reviews and the food. (Sorry Homi lovers, worst restaurant Mexican food I have had in my life.) Made Taco Bell taste fresh and inventive. I've got to say I was pleasantly surprised. Most of the dishes appeared and tasted freshly prepared and not something that had spent its' time on death row. Hopefully they change it up a bit on different days for variety because I'm exicited to go back. Also wished they offered shredded beef in addition to the ground. Although the ground was quite good in terms of flavor and lack of grease, i prefer the texture of shredded in my food. And lay out tortillas and cheddar for those that like to build their own tacos/burritos. Oh, and always offer your house salsa which is also quite good. Decided to take my wife there for dinner last night. Again, pleasantly surprised with the food. Lots of flavor and a good amount of heat. The drinks were good and the service extremely attentive. Although the karaoke is kinda entertaining, it does get a bit loud in there. They could crank it down a few notches until the late-night crowd comes out. And the pathetic little basket of chips and salsa don't quite cut it and it becomes a little tedious having to ask for more. And the saltine crackers? Again, must be a MN thing as I have never seen that offered in my life. I think this place holds promise and I'm excited to work my way through their seemingly vast menu. 10X's the flavor of Boca Chica folks.

This was some of the best, most interesting Mexican food we've had in the Twin Cities; it distinguishes itself from other Mexican restaurants with its creative and tempting emphasis on fresh and flavorfully prepared seafood. Our server (Neyda) was very friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful in assisting us with our choices. Wife ordered the Shrimp a la Diabla (in Devil's sauce) and I had the Filet Relleno de Mar (tilapia, stuffed with shrimp, oysters, mussels, etc.). Both dishes were absolutely delicious, served with tasty rice flecked with cooked veggies. We shared Churros con Chocolat for dessert and it was wonderful. We will be back---their selection of seafood soups is amazing, if only my appetite were more robust. It's a very attractive venue, with a large outdoor patio and a banquet area with dance floor.

Terrible experience. Thought we had a great new restaurant in the area and gave it a try. What a mistake. Bad margaritas, horrible bartending, over ambitious menu with real bad food (only edible items were the empanadas), blaring karaoke (can't hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation), ran out of silverware (yes, silverware) and gave us some plastic forks (I'm not kidding -- this after having the server inform us that she couldn't put our order in because the cooks weren't taking any new orders, they were too busy -- the place was half full at best). I could go on but I think you get the picture and why bore you more. Avoid this dump. Deserves to be out of business in a couple months. What a disappointment. A complete debacle.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
