A good friend bought me some sandwich bread and cupcakes from Bittersweet yesterday and I was so happy! The bread was some of the best gluten-free bread I've had, and the cupcake tasted like a regular, gluten-ful treat.

I absolutely love BitterSweet Bakery! They have some of the best gluten and dairy free cookies, pizza crust and bread around. It's a huge deal to have a dedicated gluten free bakery in the Twin Cities. They have decent hours and are willing to answer questions. They can also do special orders which is nice!

Wonderful bread selection..their breads are dense and full of flavor and of course pricy but worth eating!!Cookies are average I won't bother with the cookies.

We purchased a chocolate birthday cake for my daughter. She has celiac, so baked goods are tough. It was handy to be able to pick up a cake and not make from scratch. But the cake was dry and tasteless. I have bought a few things there for emergencies, but will opt to make it at home when I can as I can generally do better making regular recipes and subbing with a high quality gluten free flour. Biggest negative is customer service. They are never friendly and I always feel like I am inconveniencing them when I call or stop in. I wonder how much better they would do if they were actually customer-service oriented.

Having a dedicated gluten free bakery like this to go to is a huge treat. My husband has celiac disease so knowing there is absolutely zero cross-contamination somewhere is big. He got the pecan coffee cake and the flavor and consistency was really close to the glutenous kind his mom always made growing up! Very good. I got an iced almond slice of bundt cake thing? It was super moist (sorry to use that word) and flavorful. They have ready-made frozen pizzas. Obviously, because they are gluten free and made fresh, they are more expensive, at about $18 for a 12 inch. Totally worth it for a gluten free date night. The crust was wonderful! We also loved the half loaf of cinnamon raisin bread we took home (we splurged on this trip)! The younger guy working there (Saturday morning) was kind and patient while I drooled over all the options. I will say the atmosphere is less than appealing... the sitting area felt like an old church lobby or something. I think redecorating that space would make a HUGE difference. Oh, and offering decent coffee :)

My boyfriend and I recently became vegan and have been wanting to try this place out. You're paying for the gluten-free aspect, particularly baked goods. A store bought loaf of gluten-free bread is like a dry, tasteless BRICK so I will gladly pay more for good stuff occasionally. Last week my boyfriends family was in town. His mom has to eat everything gluten free so we figured what better time to come here. We purchased a Gluten & Dairy free Carrot cake that was absolutely delish. This bakery is super cute however I have to knock off two stars for the sole purpose that I came here with My boyfriends parents and sister and everyone of us agreed upon leaving that we felt unwelcome. While my boyfriends mother was ordering and purchasing her items she was trying to make cute chit chat with the guy and he didn't even respond to anything she said. The entire time we were there we felt like he was thinking "Are you done?" if this place had a friendlier atmosphere I probably would return, but I don't think we will ever come back.

This review reflects my very bittersweet feelings about BitterSweet. I love what BitterSweet is and the service they provide to those of us dealing with food sensitivities. Finding fresh gluten free baked goods is difficult, and having a fully-dedicated GF bakery in the Twin Cities is awesome. I appreciate BitterSweet's mission and want them to continue to be very successful. That said, I've been totally disappointed in what I've tried, and I likely won't be back. To be fair, I have only tried the vanilla cupcakes and cranberry orange scone, but both were dismal. They tasted like the exact same batter with some different flavors added to each. The cake in both was very dense and bread-like, tasted stale and not sweet at all--which seemed especially wrong for a cupcake! There was no flakiness to either. The frosting for the cupcake was made with soy shortening instead of butter so that, too, wasn't great. (Maybe good if you are lactose-intolerant, but a problem for anyone with soy issues. I am neither--just plain old Celiac--so please just let me enjoy some damn buttercream frosting.) I have had wonderful gluten free cupcakes and scones that tasted just like regular cupcakes and scones (both store-bought and homemade) so I know it can be done. A good gluten free cake can fool even the most discerning palate. There are myriad recipes these days for gluten-free bakery, so I feel like their lack of knowledge in this area is inexcusable. I was so excited to try BitterSweet and will keep an eye on them to hear if they might improve their recipes. Give them a try and see what you think for yourself. If you are dealing with several food intolerances, this might be your place.

I have been into the bakery twice; both times the service was almost hostile. I do purchased the packaged and refrigerated cakes that are sold at the natural food store in my home town. The price is exceptionally high. The carrot cake and pumpkin bars are the best, including the scrumptious frosting. Don't bother with the chocolate cake, or the coffee cakes. Both are dry and lack good flavor. Down in valley is another gluten free bakery with friendlier customer service and nearly as good baked goods. DITV also has very delicious mini pecan and lemon pies.

Love this Gluten free bakery. I drive from Minneapolis to get their AMAZING muffins. Nothing compares. If I lived closer I'd go there much more frequently!

I have never had such great GF, vegan, potato and corn free desserts in my life. Just a few favorites: Almond muffin, Spice cookies and Lemon cookies. Thank you for making a great product!

Meh... The chocolate cake was just ok. I'm sure I could bake some thing a little more exciting than a basic cake but I was in a pinch and needed a gluten free cake asp. Also I was surprised to see they have used their bakery as a soap box to spread their anti-vaccine opinions, the place was was wall papered with propaganda. Next time, I think I will try a bakery that can focus on baking...

I love BitterSweet Bakery. My work site has recently been moved away from down the street from them which is a blessing and a curse. If I had my way I would live inside a doorless house constructed of their carrot cake and slowly eat my way out until I either died or turned orange. Escape is not an option, I'd merely turn and continue earthworming my way along. Their breads are great-they are texturally different from gluten/wheat breads but it doesn't seem so obvious. They retain their shape really well unlike a lot of other gluten free breads I've had elsewhere that seem to crumble into dust if you bump them wrong (or bang them against a counter because you froze them and can't get them apart, oops). It's wonderful to be able to eat a sandwich that doesn't chew itself for you again. Everything I've had from BitterSweet has completely blown my mind. It certainly alleviates the urge to eat an entire tub of frosting over the 'I miss cake' sads. Another thing that I like about the bakery is that most of the time the person who assists me at the counter is this sweet older gentleman who reminds me of my grandpa. Warm, inviting, delicious, and best of all non-deadly. A++++ in my book!

Bitter... the guy working there, Sweet... the yummies... 1.) All gluten free from what i saw 2.) Expensive. Maybe in line with other gluten-free offerings??? 3.) Sweets were excellent, did not care at all for the bread. I have no gluten sensitivity, but wanted to give it a go. Prob would not be back as it is very pricey compared to similar wheat based products... but they do seem to really focus on creating a quality, tasty gluten free offering. The bread was just plain horrible to me, but the coffee cake was certainly one of the best tasting i have ever had. Glad this is out there for those with Gluten issues!! And to cut the 'guy' some slack, He does come across as crabby, but i consider it part of the 'charm' and hey... if i had to get up early in the morning and bake... not sure i would be so friendly either.

I'm a big fan of BitterSweet. I don't have celiac or gluten sensitivity and I don't even really like sweets that much myself. The fiance however does have gluten sensitivity and does like sweets quite a bit. So, I'm a big fan of BitterSweet because I know that anytime I stop in there, I can pick something up that is going to make the fiance very happy. Fortunately for me, I work in the area so it's quite convenient. I've only been a handful of times but the reviews I've gotten from the fiance on the cookies and cupcakes I've gotten here have been rave. I got her a birthday cake there the other day which she absolutely loved. Also picked up one of their pizzas but that's still in the freezer. I'm excited to see how that is since most gluten free pizzas I've had aren't so great. As far as I can tell, if you're not down with gluten but still want to eat things like cupcakes, cakes, cookies, etc, short of making them yourself, this is the place to go. Also, as a glutenvore (probably not a word, but you know what I mean, one who eats gluten), I'm pleased to say that everything I've sampled from BitterSweet has been excellent and you'd never know there was no wheat in their products.

Living gluten free really sucks, Bittersweeet makes it better, Grab a snack for a couple bucks (spice cake is the best!), and you'll be hooked forever!

Fantastic baked goods. Everything is super-fresh and you totally can't tell it's gluten-free! Highly recommend.

Is this really St. Paul? Come on. Really? I had the peanut butter choco chip cookie. It was ok. I needed coffee in the worst way and to my surprise they had some. And it was free because it was mothers day! I was even more surprised that I didn't have to be a mother to get said free coffee. My heart sank when I tasted it. It was quite disgusting. Watery. Burned. Ew. So when people say - it was free! Remember this. Free isn't always good. I dumped it out and went to Starbucks instead.

Hidden in a strip mall (nail place, tire rotation) is the tastiest gluten-free bakery I've ever eaten at. (And yes, I've been to Erin McKenna's Babycakes.) There are only 2 chairs, and coffee from a pump, but take it to-go and you'll be in heaven. I can order mini-valentine's cupcakes for my daughter's preschool and have them ready the next day. Easter Coconut cream pie, pecan pie at thanksgiving. My husband raves about their crust. Their frozen pizza is fab. Try their lemon poppyseed muffin. Light as air, with great flavor. Their pumpkin bars are heavenly. I don't remember exactly what Jesus said about gluten- so expect to be blessed when you call, but if you need any baked goods, this is your place. Valley Natural Foods and Tailor Made Nutrition also carry individual servings but you'll pay about 25% more out of the bakery.

I've only had their onion dill bread - but it was so good - . So good, that I am a believer in anything that comes out of their kitchen. It was better than other gluten-y breads I've had before Also picked up a couple of their pizza-crusts. Can't wait to try them and go back to get more!

Bet gluten free bakery ever! They're peanut butter with chocolate chip cookie tasted like, a peanut butter with chocolate chip cookie! I'm not on any sort of gluten free diet, but a friend of mine is and he just raves about this place. The bakery also has "take and bake" all gluten free pizzas, which are FREAKIN' awesome! We got the meat lovers, which was a bit spendy at $20, but what do you expect with gluten free. Coming from someone who doesn't need nor cares to be on a gluten free diet should mean a lot! I would most likely pick some bittersweet bakery/home baked pizza over most competitors!

After finding out about this place, I could hardly wait to visit on our next trip to MN. So we made it the first stop after the airport and talk about baked goods overload! Having to eat gluten free means I'm not used to a lot of options and certainly not an entire bakery full of them! We tried the pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting, the coconut pies, the take and bake pizza, raisin bread, regular bread, a muffin and I can't even remember what else. Everything was delicious! If Delta wouldn't try to rip me off for $25 bucks I would have checked a bag full baked goods to take back home. If you are stuck eating gluten free like me, this is a place you can't miss.

Way to up the bar on Gluten Free foods Bittersweet. I have to say, after a recommendation for this bakery from someone I stopped by for treats to bring my nephew on his birthday (cake is avoided even if it is HIS birthday!). I selected a container of cup cakes and several cookies from the display shelf. As Amy B said, the bakery's display and "menu" itself isn't very showy, but the food speaks for itself! Amazing! I have stopped by a few times recently to pick-up treats, even for myself (not on a gluten-free diet). And the birthday boy, he was absolutely thrilled with the treats he could enjoy himself.

I was surprised by this little place... I asked around for suggestions on a birthday treat for dinner guests - one who sticks to a gluten free diet. This was the place to go! I was a little nervous walking in - room for seating, but no one was there. The show case was near empty and there really wasn't a brochure, only a small list near the doorway. Definitely not a showy display, nor was my mouth watering. A staff was diligently working in the back and a very nice younger guy came up to help. He was super knowledgeable and personable. Bittersweet is more of a call-ahead location, willing to take on pretty much any gluten free request... from cakes, breads, muffins, bars and cookies to take-n-bake pizzas or pizza crusts. I stuck with a half dozen of the monster and double chocolate cookies. They were everything a tasty cookie should be - the perfect amount of softness and a good size for a fair price. And best of all, my guest was really impressed on my effort so she could enjoy dessert too :)
