Current is neatly tucked along Manning Ave/Cty Rd 95 in downtown Afton, and connected to the Afton House Inn. It's a locale which tends to sway more trendy/classy for the upscale demographic coming off of the St. Croix, but also is approachable for the rest of the population. This leaves it searching for a bit of a soul. The menu is manageable--2 sided, with a good mix of starters, salads, flatbreads, sandwiches and entrees. Prices range from $7-$18 for nearly everything. The menu seems to stay along this new american theme, with some odd iterations which seem like they're reaching. I think these are attempts to either accommodate a much more casual crowd, or conversely, impress those affluent yacht clubbers coming in after a day on the 'skiff. Here's what we had: --Brie/grape/lavender/honey flatbread. Oh biscuits, this was just superb. Complex flavors and surprisingly light. A great starter. --Apricot + Apple salad. Surprisingly complex and enjoyable. The mixed greens were a little past prime, but the diced apples, apricots and vinagrette were quite balanced. --Seafood chowder soup. This was a bummer. Where was the seafood?! We actually asked our server about which seafood was in it (we couldn't find any). She was great, mentioned there were getting complaints about it all day, and comp'd it without question. Weird miss, but still optimistic. --Turkey burger w/Edamame. The burger was meaty and flavorful. A nice surprise was julienned apple beneath the patty, which added this subtle, sweet crunch to the dish. The edamame was the best I've ever had--like, blew all of the sushi places I've ever been to out of the water. It was steamed in a siracha/balsamic/chili blend and was probably the most impressive element of our meal. --Fresh Seafood Sampler. This item doesn't even belong on the menu. And to think of it, our server actually tried to steer us from it. A poor plating of basic smoked salmon, some poke with a toothpick in it, and 3 shrimp. Really uninspiring, and looked like a stoned freshman in college put it together. Seriously. A terrible dish. Overall, I'd recommend Current with a few caveats. It's in a great spot for a day trip and has some bold positives. Unfortunately, the service is slow (seems to be a theme throughout the reviews), and there is huge range in quality. Befriend your server and research some other Yelper's thoughts. Go in educated, relax and enjoy the elegant ambiance.

I was better than we expected. After a morning of fishing, we walked over from the Windmill Marina to this Afton restaurant. My mom had the Snapper and I had the Walleye Sandwich. We were very pleased.

This is one of those places where the food is extremely creative but not over the top. In fact, they are traditional recipes so people with narrow tastes will love this place while foodies will appreciate the added touches. My wife had the slow roasted salmon, which may mean baked in other places, but the fish was succulent and well seasoned. It was atop a hybrid kind of thing - very large couscous or very small risotto. It was finished with some shaved cucumber in a delicate yogurt dressing. My entree, the beef spare rib (boneless) was lean and slow cooked to perfection. Desert: the apple dumpling with ice cream. Again, creative and delicious. For City dwellers, this is worth the trip. It's quaint and not in an overly Northwoods kitschky way. Maybe stay the night and enjoy Afton Alps the next day?

I like the vibe of this place and they have very interesting choices on the menu- I do think they have great ideas here and there and some things are hit or miss. I decided on the turkey burger and it was decent but not as good as I have had elsewhere. The husband got fish and enjoyed it. The prices are on the high side for the execution of the food. I will go again . I do think the menu changes with the season and they offer specials

Sat down and listened to the server talk to the table next to us about who knows what for almost 10 minutes before even acknowledging us or getting our drink orders. Unacceptable. No tip. Sea to be attached to afton house inn which is a whole different terrible service review on their yelp page.

Beautiful night to eat outdoors. Although patio dining is right next to the parking lot, I did have a sense of being by the St. Croix river as you could see the masts of some sailboats and the far side of the river. Went for a nice walk down by the river after dinner. We were seated immediately, but I agree with a previous review that outdoor dining may be a bit of a stretch for their staff levels and training. We split the shrimp and andouille sausage jambalaya which was excellent. Spicy enough to go well with our beer. Meal was brought out with two plates and two spoons, but had to ask for napkins as napkins and silverware were never on the table. Combine the beautiful night, friendly waitstaff, very good food and our favorite beer, it makes it easier to overlook the shortfalls.

Have been here several times and was happy but this time for brunch. Slow service and food was slow to come. Food was cold, no butter with the bread, had to ask for our drinks several times, will not be back again.

Having eaten regularly here since it opened, I am so disappointed to see a definite drop in quality of food. Unfortunately the food prices have gone up considerably over the last year as well. The food used to be fabulous; fresh, interesting and always delicious. In the past year, we have noticed some changes; the hamburgers no longer seem fresh, the french fries lost their seasoning, less flavorful sandwiches, and other noticeable changes in overall quality. As mentioned in other reviews, the portions are small. My child's chicken tender order is down to two small tenders and a small handful of fries. Certainly all portions seem smaller than in past years. Please, please, Current! Whatever you did when you first opened, please go back in time and do what you did then. Until that happens, we won't return. So sad to say you have lost some regulars.

5 stars for the excellent food! Service was a little slow, but worth it for the deliciousness! Really cool atmosphere inside. We got brunch here today. I got the eggs Benedict, and it was the best that I've had. My partner got the Rum Chata French toast, and also extremely delicious! High quality food! Can't wait to go back!

We came here for an early dinner after the afton fest (cool cars and fun music). The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. The ambiance is casual and slightly loud, so our two kids fit right in ;) The spouse ordered the shrimp flatbread pizza and the shrimp were cooked perfectly, with that nice crunchy pop you expect from fresh seafood. I ordered the halibut special and it was tasty! It's hard to get the right Mix of spices and yet still allow the delicate flavor of halibut to shine through; and the cook staff did it just right. The kids Mac and cheese with edamame was delicious. The ultimate burger was also very good and our 7 year old almost ate the whole thing! We also tried the hand cut fries with truffle oil and aioli dip. Very tasty, but what would have made it perfect would be some mussels on top and a touch of white wine ( a Classic Brittany way to serve mussels). I would refer the cook staff of Current to the menu description from alchemy bistro in Gloucester, MA for inspiration: Steamed Mussels fennel, white wine, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, house cut frites, tarragon aioli - See more at: alchemybistro.com/01_men…

Went here after an amazing hike in the wilderness, the patio was open and we took the last open table as the sun set. My friend and I got a fish sandwich and the sesame chicken drops to split. The fish sandwich wasn't bad, however the sesame chicken drops were mind blowing. Really, both the friend and I could not get over how great they tasted. I've never had anything like it, this sauce was buttery & slightly sweet and mostly indescribable. The cubes of chicken were kind of crispy. I'm attaching a picture of it. The staff was so kind and knew their dishes well. I would drive all the way out there from the cities just for the sesame chicken drops.

WHAT A JOKE! Seriously. I was mad all weekend after eating here on a recent Friday night. Mostly because the fish tacos I ordered seriously had the smallest piece of fish ever in the world(like the length of my pinky finger and just as skinny) there was hardly any slaw on them either and the dish was like $14! Whichever chef had the balls to send those out was pretty gutty. Tiniest serving of french fries too. I was with some girlfriends so I didn't feel like complaining. My friend ordered a mojito and the waiter came back to tell her that they ran out of limes and asked if she wanted it without the limes!! Ummm..... no thanks. Also 2 friends ordered salmon. One as an entree, and the other as a salad. The price difference between the two was quite a bit and when the dishes came, the serving of salmon was the same for the two. Needless to say my friend regretted paying for the more expensive dish when she could have had the same size in a salad! The waiter was awkward and kind of creepy. Still disgusted that my bill for the shittiest fish tacos of my life with a tip was $19 and I drank water. Will never be back. Ever. they basically robbed me. :(

The food was good but service was terrible. As requested, we checked with a hostess inside to be seated on the patio. We were seating and waited... and waited... and waited for someone to come out. Finally our waitress came out and told us she didn't see us, that the last time she checked she had other diners at the same table. Which I could have understood as an oversight if not for the rest of the meal. Food took 40 minutes to arrive. We all ran out of ketchup halfway through our meals and had no waitstaff nearby to ask. The waitress never once stopped to check on us, and when she finally stopped by to give us the check, all 4 of us at the table had empty glasses and we were not offered a refill on this hot day. Seems like this place is trying to overextend themselves with patio service they are not equipped to offer. I was also bothered by the smokers congregating right near our eating space, which had a nice view (!) of a parking lot.

My first visit there last night left me with the feeling of ambivalence. The indoor environment is ok. The outdoor patio is on the parking lot. The food was decent. I had the walleye sandwich was was good but nothing great. The fries were great and the Creme Brûlée' was great. (Obviously taking a day off of the healthy nutrition plan). I think we had a new server who was nice but not very efficient - forgetting drinks, bringing kids desserts but no spoons, little things really and always tried to make up for it.

Eaten here a few times since it wasn't The Catfish Cafe. Rude servers and bartenders. A fresh coat of paint and a new name won't make the food better. Seem as though this place wants to be "trendy" they should use fresh food instead of the lifeless frozen food they currently use. Much better places down the road.

Good menu, good food. One of the best versions of a Cubano sandwich I've had. Unfortunately, the Service lacked greatly, and it was beyond the normal delays of a busy Saturday night. We waited 30 minutes after the order was placed to hear from the waitress that our food would be up in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later, we finally received the dinner salads, the entrees weren't served until 25 minutes after that. Noticed that several tables that ordered full meals after us were served 15 min before us. One sandwich and burger were served hot, one item barely warm. When a restaurant messes up an order, they should just own up to it. Finally complained to a mgr. He did offer each of us a chocolate truffle for dessert. We avoid sugars, so didn't accept, but at least it was an acknowledgement. Very mixed experience.

I have been here several times. Their chicken drops are amazing. Other very good dishes are grape and Brie flatbread, and the fondue. Creative touches and tasty. Service is friendly and helpful if you ask.

good location (downtown afton, by the river). good food, good bar, and good atmosphere. The menu is just the right size, a few salads, a few sandwiches, a few entrees, etc. The individual items on the menu are unique, and of high quality. A notch above a dinner club, but a notch below a top rated gastropub. We've eaten here about a dozen times, and occasionally bring the youngsters. One noteworthy item - the kids menu is something any mom will appreciate. for about $4 the kiddos get a side dish (yogurt, fruit, or edamame (really!) and a quality main course (turkey burger, house made penne mac and cheese, etc). As or the main menu: ligonberry Turkey burger is good. Truffle fries are great. Chop salad is always good. Pastas are great. Pork Taco appetizer is good. Lot's to choose from, and you won't go wrong. If you want a decent restaurant in Afton, this is the one I recommend.

Dirty, rude service. Took my second trip to this restaurant a week ago. The first encounter was when they first opened, friendly service, decent food, and reasonable prices. Decided to try it again, drove all the way from the west side of town on a Friday after work to bring my parents there. They have visited the current a few times since they reside in Afton. We arrived and were seated in a dark corner, despite our reservation. The server Thomas (with the pony tail) sat us down and brought us our water. As I took my first drink of it I noticed a bright pink lipstick stain on the glass. I asked for a beer in a clean glass - receiving a snide remark from Thomas that they "only have dirty glasses." He did not offer a single apology, only sarcastic remarks. When we ordered I asked if you could get me an appetizer to make up for the unappealing display and oversight on the cleanliness of their serving dishes, he nodded and said no - Unsure on what his actually answer is due to his heavy sarcasm. He did not offer if I would still like the appetizer (which I did) and left. The food was mediocre, much better out there for the price. Spoke with the manager after this trip and they took my contact information, but I have not been contacted. Regardless I wish the best to anyone who has to deal with this terribly rude, unprofessional, unhelpful server. Disgusted that I wasted a trip and a Friday evening at this establishment.

It was OK...trying to hard to be swanky with a pop machine outside. Liked the cucumber water they supplied us with. We had an ornery 15 month old with us-so it was kind of a rushed meal on the way back from Afton State Park. We shared a turkey burger-which really was very tasty-although they forgot the cheese. Fries were OK too. Not sure if I would go back-not bad but not great.

Current has everything I love when dining out. A warm cozy atmosphere, friendly staff and great food. I love going out for Sunday breakfast! This time I had fingerling potato/short rib hash with eggs over medium and my husband had Huevos Rancheros. Yummy! Also, the Bloody Mary's are awesome. Great place.

Current is a neat restaurant, the food is great, but the service sucks, and it has sucked from the first day. There is evidently no feedback to management about how things are going from customers. The place can be almost empty, yet it can take forever to get service or even pay your bill.

Current is our 'go-to' date night spot. We love everything about it, the food, the staff and the atmosphere. We can't wait to be sitting on the patio with a glass of wine in hand. See you soon!

If you ever visited the Catfish you will instantly realize how "Current" Current Bar is. They transformed the old saloon into a fabulous space. The food and service was great. The attention to details from sourcing local/fresh ingredients to the bottled water led to an amazing meal. They have fresh takes on old favorites and some new entrees. The beer and wine list is one of the best in the area and the server knows what pairing to use for the meal you choose. If you wanna get out of the city and up for an amazing dining experience set sail for Afton.

First time in Afton, looked like a nice contemporary eclectic place with outdoor seating. The food was good, but our table on the patio was right next to a soda machine, I mean, like almost up against it! We thought about moving our table as kids came to the pop machine, or people tried to walk between our table and the soda machine! Rude! The service had a lot to be desired, took a long time to get our salads and flatbread (had the grapes and Brie, nice combination!) and our server apologized and said it was crazy busy in the kitchen. Although it wasn't crowded by any means. Then, we wanted to get going, it was getting late, and no one came to give us our bill. My husband had to go into the restaurant to ask and to pay. Not sure we'd go back, might try the Afton House next time. But it looks like the restaurants are connected, so not sure if it's the same wait staff and kitchen or not.
