One of my favorite pizza places in metro Detroit. I get the deep dish with mushrooms. Last time I was there for my birthday in January, and I thought we had put our name on the wait list, but half an hour later when I went to check, the hostess didn't have it. However, she was very apologetic even thought it was probably my fault, and seated us right away. Sign up for their email club and you will get free appetizer or dessert coupon for your birthday. We tried the chicken wings but they were a little greasy. Also their bar does an awesome happy hour.... When we were waiting, my friend and I ordered two Screwdrivers and they were only $3.50... Wow! I've heard they sometimes give out free pizza at the bar too.

I have always like this restaurant. It's also a good spot to go to to escape the Woodward Dream Cruise. Let's start with their pizza, the sauce and toppings are excellent, very fresh, however I don't like the breading as much. Even when I got my pizza well done its just to doughy for me. Their bread sticks are very good, and their ranch is very good. The server I had there, I wish I remembered his name, he was excellent. Guy with dark hair and glasses. I tried their mini tacos as an appetizer, absolutely amazing. Their salad is excellent and also their tuna melt is to die for. I will definitely be back, just wish they can make the crust more like buddies, then I would give it a 5 star rating. I would give them more of a 3.5 star rating. But, since I can not, I think they are closer to a 4.

Ran here on my lunch. Got the pizza plus. Salad and pizza. Food took forever to come out. Then when it did I could tell just looking at it the pizza was raw. I didn't have time for it to be made again so I dealt with raw doughy pizza. Waitress never came around and asked how it was. Instead she ran past me and threw the check on the table never saying a word to me after I got my food. Horrible!!!

This place is amazing! Best pizza, hands down! Please go and try, you will not be disappointed.

Their Italian sub is very good. Pizza hit or miss. I like a flavor to the crust and they do not have it.

Great stuff. Service is hit or miss so we usually get carryout. Terrific example of "Detroit" style pizza. Excellent quality. Lunch specials are really great as well. Don't hesitate....get this.

I ordered the chicken sandwich for lunch and it was delicious. The service was quick and the atmosphere enjoyable

We ordered takeout. Asked for a square well done and a small cheese regularly cooked. Cheese so well done my daughter wouldn't eat it. The square was barely cooked, wet on the bottom and disgusting. We will not order again.

Great salad, great round pizza, our server was super. We always love coming here. Good place for pizza and beer and watching a hockey game.

I have grown up on this pizza! My entire family loves this place.. I got carry out and it was just as good as if you sat in the restaurant. The staff is super friendly and accomodating. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Unfortunately VERY poor customer service is marking Shields down on my book. The pizza was good, and tasty but the service was terrible. I ordered carryout and the staff member was extremely short and terse when taking my order. Then it took my friend walking to the front of the empty restaurant (even though two employees were standing outside chatting as we walked in) to get someone to help us. I got home and even though I specifically asked for ranch instead of marinara (and had it confirmed on my order on the phone) they still forgot it. I should not have to double check that my order is correct. Then when I called and asked to speak to a manager she was rude and terse with me. She said "well do you want to come back and get one" to which I said "I guess but it's quite frustrating to have to drive all the way back" she then gave me a very insincere "sorry" and a rude "I'll give you a gift certificate" before she hung up on me. Customers are what keep you in business and treating them like an inconvenience is unacceptable. It was not a busy rush time (as if that would justify it). I was not rude on the phone to the manager yet she treated me very poorly. I won't be using my gift certificate and I would recommend you choose another establishment because clearly this one does not value you.

The detroit style pizza is pretty good here. Crispy crust and good toppings. I also had an order or the cheese sticks which were nicely fried & battered and came with ranch and marinara.. Mm! The service was ok, could have been a little more friendly and attentive, but nothing to get fired up about. We stayed for trivia on Saturday night, it was a fun Saturday night. The beer selection has a standard variety.. A little leaning in your standard/domestic beers, but even a craft beer drinker can find something worthwhile. A large pizza with 2 toppings, mozzarella sticks, a pitcher or Griffen Claw and tip set us back about $50, which was a little much. We didn't have leftovers. Not from the area and wouldn't go out of my way to go back - but overall a pretty decent place. No frills, very casual.

  • Ang K.

The salad is different. I love their antipasto salad. I usually order a family sized for carry out. But lately, they've been skimping on me.. The box isn't full, not even half the amount of toppings. Total bum out for a $14 salad...

    (3)
  • Sam T.

The food was good and the service was great. I had a "slice" of pizza with an antipasto salad. Both were good portion and tasty. The "slice" was more like a small personal pizza; not your typical slice. It was great. The antipasto came with a lot of dressing, but it was on the side so I just didn't use it all. The ambiance is a little dated. I would come back for a pre-meeting lunch, but it lacks the sophistication for me to bring customers in. All-in-all it was a good experience.

  • Mrs. And Mr. G.

The service was good. family friendly atmosphere. Decorations are outdated as some mentioned, but who cares.. We tried the large round vegetarian pizza, and it was rich and very tasty, and the spud skins were also good. Will be back again

  • Michelle J.

I gave shields of Troy three stars because the food is three stars. The ambience is in need of updating, but the service is usually really good. Also they typically have decent drink specials even on a Friday night. We love going there with our kids, because it is a very family-friendly location. Also, Friday nights they have a clown ("Checkers") Who is great and makes balloon animals. if you are looking for a place to take the kids and not worry about them disturbing someone else, this has a great family atmosphere.

Would have been nice if they would of told us that they didn't actually have a table big enough for 11 people when we made our reservation. #bullshit.

Food is always very tasty and delicious. I recommend the Gold Medal Pizza if you enjoy spicy. The wings are great and so are the salads. The quesadillas are better than any quesadillas I've ever had!

The last time I went to this Shield's was years ago. We were in the neighborhood, it was getting late and we saw the sign. Wanna try it?, I asked my wife? "Well there is not a lot left open", she said. So we went. Now I remember why I hadn't been back in years. I had an Italian Sandwich of some kind. In a word -Blech. My wife ordered a Ravioli dish. She said she could almost see the plastic bag it came out of. It will be years again until I can forget this experience and decide to try again. Of course maybe I will never go back.

Heard this place was a local favorite. However the food we ordered lacked flavor (ham and pineapple pizza, breadsticks and antipasto salad). You'd be better off sticking to dominos pizza

    (2)
  • Melissa A.

First time ordering carry out & we'll definitely be back. The cheese on the pizza is great!- lots of toppings too!- probably just should have got the deep dish. Bread sticks were soft but could have used more than what they call a "hint" of butter & Parmesan. The Antipasto salad was big, had a lot of toppings & a nice vinegrette.

    (4)
  • Ray B.

We enjoy the pizza and other members of the party liked their food. Nothing impressive, just a solid performance. However, I was disappointed with our salad as it was rather short on the toppings. Bread sticks are nothing to note as they lack flavor.

I am so sad to see such bad reviews for this place. My hubby and I go here all the time for pizza and think it's pretty darn good...much better than Green Lantern, which is supposedly one of the best in the area. The pizza is square and toppings are plentiful. Be sure to order cheese bread if you're feeling indulgent - sooooo tasty. Plus, the place has runny ranch. Need I say more? It's a heavenly delish combo with bread and pizza. Also, my hubby loves the antipasto salad, but it wasn't my favorite. Shield's is definitely a family-friendly place, so expect to see a lot of kids. It's not about atmosphere here - it's about good food and good service - for that, I think Shield's is one of the best pizza chains in metro Detroit! Join the email club to get $5 off a large pizza. Additionally, on your b-day, choose from a free app or dessert.

This is one of my go-to joints in the area. They have great pizza, amazing bread sticks, and other great Italian dishes. I always go with some kind of pizza, with the BBQ Chicken being a fav. The bread sticks are always warm and buttery, and they always have some kind of beer special depending on the night. The service has suffered the last few times I have been there though. I hope it is just a fluke though.

  • Iffat B.

I was excited to eat here since it was voted one of the best pizzas in Michigan, but after trying the pizza, I'm not sure what makes it the best. I ordered the cheese bread and a small veggie pizza which came with 4 square slices. The cheese bread was really good dipped in the ranch dressing, but cheese bread is pretty hard to mess up. I'll probably not return as Buddy's pizza is sooo much better.

    (3)
  • Jennifer H.

We finally tried the pizza. And it was REALLY good. The crust was nice and crispy, yet chewy. The toppings were abundant. And the sauce on top was nice, because it had a baked taste to it (though I actually wished there was more sauce). So we're still four-star fans!

  • kelly w.

This is a case of, "What the hell happened to you?!" Seriously. My family used to go there all the time for their pizza and their antipasto salad. I ordered a carry-out salad last night from there and the cheese was moist and slimey. The salad was covered in ham and lacking salami (an old selling point for me). I think I need to shield myself from ever going back. ugh. make it stop.

  • Robert P.

i have eaten here for pizza and regular food as well and I have decided it is not great but not bad either...pizza is good especially if you like deep dish, salads are fine soups are ok...you wont fall in love but you wont be depressed either... this was a boring review but all in all a pretty boring restaurant...

    (3)
  • Lawrence S.

Not bad not real good depends on how you like your pie . Service was slow but in all fairness it was a Friday night . The crust was very good but the sauce was too sweet for me . Had ample amount of toppings and wife said her salad was a hit . Fair selection of draft beers and bar service was quick and server did the best she could ....Will stop back maybe not on a Friday night ...

  • Jason M.

A decent sit-down pizza place with Detroit-area famous deep dish pizza. I would give this place 5-stars, but the pizza gets 3-stars from me, and this is definitely a personal preference deal. The sauce has a sweet taste to it, and for me that's a dealbreaker on pizza. If you like a sweeter sauce you'll probably love this place. I could certainly scarf it down, but maybe I'll try Buddy's next time I'm in town. The crust was nice though. Other than that the service was great and the atmosphere is nice. The salads are generous and they have great beer specials.

Thank you for your fabulous GLUTEN FREE pizza!! It is so good that I can't even tell its GF! Personally I think yours is the best one out there! My friends even love it and can't tell it's gluten free. I tell all my GF friends about it. Thank you for making such a great pizza for us who can't eat your regular pizza. Thank you;)

  • Amy D.

I can see why my husband's family loves this place so much, the service and food were fantastic and not to mention the portions are huge! The restuarant is more than accomodating of large parties (there was 13 of us) and we were never in want of a refill. They also now carry a gluten free pizza option which makes things so much easier for me! I built my own pizza and the small had 6 slices! The crust is a bit thin but the toppings are so fresh and tasty it makes up for it! Oh and the family size salads are enormous! I mean seriously! One fed the whole table. We had to take to go boxes for the second one we ordered. I'll definitely come back next time we are in town!

I was very disappointed to return one year later for some more Shields, only to find out they could not accommodate our party of 7. I guess they are so focused on renting out the restaurant to parties that regular patrons are second class citizens. When we tried to go on a Saturday we were told our party was simply too large because they had a birthday party and two baby showers going on. Very disappointing.

I have been a customer at the Macomb Township location for over 10 years. My family & I would go there for dinner at least twice a month. My last experience was horrible and so disappointing. We had a salad that had a horrible after taste. I asked the waitiress if it was a salad from a bag. She came back and said it was and we then asked to talk to the manager, Larry. Larry came to our table and informed us they have been using salad from a bag for over a year and how can we JUST NOW be noticing it. I couldn't believe the attitude we received from him. I do not make myself a salad from a bag for myself let alone go to a restaurant and PAY for a salad that came out of a bag. The attitude from Larry was appalling! Unfortunately Shields of Macomb Township, you have lost a long standing customer as we will NOT be back and it's not because of the salad in a bag...it's because the Larry's attitude. Maybe he should treat his customers (long time or not) with a little more respect especially considering the fact we were there on a Saturday between 5 and 6pm and there were only a handful of patrons. Horrible. Will NEVER go back. Will go to a restaurant that appreciates our business!

A working dinner, we had carry out deep dish meat lovers, BBQ chicken and salad... A slice of each and salad, I was stuffed! The crust was crispy outside, soft inside. Was surprised how tasty the chicken was. Could only imagine it better had it been eaten fresh from the oven.

Not a big fan of Shields, and I've given them quite a few tries. The pizza is just ok, nothing great. Toppings are typical, but I hate places that put sauce on their pizza sporadically, and that's what they do. Random blobs of sauce everywhere, and random blobs of cheese everywhere. Not good. The dough is decent, but ruined by the way they slap the toppings on. Salads are typical of a pizza type place. I ordered takeout spaghetti from there a couple times. 1st time was after the stomach flu and I was just ready to inhale anything at that point after not eating for a couple days, so I don't really remember it. I do remember getting the breadsticks with the meal and they were hard, dry and just inedible. Ordered another takeout spaghetti from them the other night and this time it was not edible. The sauce tasted like it had been simmering way too long so the taste of it was horrific. I remembered my problem with the breadsticks last time, so I ordered an order of cheese bread to hopefully eliminate that problem. Nope. The cheese bread lacked any flavor whatsoever. The dough was almost raw, the cheese was gross, I even tried to add some garlic powder to it to add some flavor at home, but it was just plain inedible. And to top it off, I got the breadsticks that come with the meal and they were just as gross and hard as last time. Now my boyfriend came home from work late that evening quite hungry, and I saved my mostly intact dinner just in case because he will eat anything, and after he tried it, he threw it all in the garbage. Just plain not good food.

I love the pizza here! It's a square pizza with thick bready dough and a crispy, flavorful crust, topped with stripes of slightly sweet tomato sauce, and a good but not overwhelming amount of cheese. (Quite a few Yelpers seem to prefer thin crust pizza and hate Detroit-style pizza. Not me! I love all kinds of pizza.) The boyfriend and I always get carryout, and we always get the family combo - a large pizza with two toppings, a salad (Greek, garden, or antipasto), breadsticks, and marinara sauce for dipping. This is enough food for two people plus leftovers for 1.5 people the next day, three hungry people, or four polite eaters. The antipasto salad is loaded with an iceberg/romaine mix, ham, salami, brick cheese, and olives, and also contains cucumber slices, grape tomatoes, and a few peperoncini. The dressing is a mix of red wine vinegar, oil, and spices. I love salads that are a combination of healthy (veggies!) and unhealthy (mmm meat and cheese). The breadsticks are soft and tasty, but I wish they were garlicky. I will admit that the slightly sweet tomato sauce tastes great on the pizza but not so great with the breadsticks. Shield's often has coupons in the mail, and you can also sign up for coupons delivered via email. They also offer a frequent diner program; check the website for details.

We always look forward to our visits to Shields. We typically get an antipasto salad, their breadsticks, and a super pizza. They've never disappointed as the salads are always freshly made and made to order with plenty of meat and cheese, and pizza that is tasty with every bite. It is getting a bit pricey for my tastes. A large super pizza is $20. While that is plenty of food, that's just getting on borderline overpriced.

Very good pizza! I enjoyed a lunch here with my sister and found the pizza to be very good. Prices are a "little" high for the portions, but I would go back. Service was excellent.

First timers going there. Wasn't bad...I enjoyed the atmosphere, very relaxed...a little loud(people kids running back and forth) and the table on the other side of the wall were pretty loud....our waiter was very cool ( he even has a great singing voce)....My family liked the food...My wings were on the bland side. Other than that, I would return but I will try something else on the menu.

I'm hoping this is just a location thing, since I remember the Southfield restaurant as amazing and loved the now gone Novi and Commerce places. My problems with this one go as so: 1) This location does not like people ordering carryout. They get really snotty about it. 2) Quality is horrible, a recent purchase saw an entire slice made up of a burnt air bubble in the dough. Everything is haphazard. You often get way to little sauce or way too much. 3) They often refuse to honor the very coupons they staple to the pizza box. Keep in mind that this is relatively expensive pizza to begin with (~$20). Even when they accept a $3 off coupon, you need to physically bring it, can't just tell them the special over the phone. Who does this anymore, especially when they have the same fliers lying around. Before/during/slightly after college I worked at Pizzerias. This place doesn't even know its own specials. There is a Buddies(one step up & cheaper) nearby as well as a multitude of great places in the area. Beginning to think this is a money laundering operation. I've given up on it.

Seriously, my favorite pizza in Michigan! Pair your pizza with their delicious Michigan salad. It's a mixed green salad with dried cherries, blue cheese, walnuts, fresh mushrooms and topped with raspberry vinaigrette dressing. It is $7-something, but it's huge! The small deep dish square (4pc) pizza is filling enough for two light eaters. And a cheese only pizza is only $6.99! It's very cheesy. I haven't been for happy hour, but the adverts on the tables say they have drink specials from 2-7 (M-F). If you are budget-minded you can sign up for their emails to receive coupons and other specials!

Once upon a time, Shields had good pizza. I'm not sure what happened between then and now, but perhaps someone needs to revisit the process on how to make pizza. I love, love, LOVE a good pizza, and nothing disappoints me more then having sub-par food (especially two nights in a row, but I digress). The sauce was a little too sweet for my taste, the cheese was more burned on then melted, and when I pick up a slice of deep dish pizza, I expect it to have a nice, crispy crust on the bottom, not almost losing the slice because it was so soggy on the bottom. Shields delivered just that, soggy, crunchy, crusty, sweet pizza. Even with the $5 off coupon we had, so not worth the money. Really? $17 for a "large" consisting of 8 pieces? And maybe it's just me, but the fountain soda had a strange aftertaste to it. Next time I'll just go to Jets.

I went there weekly for lunch for years and still go now and again and I am always pleased by the meal. I've almost every time had good experience with the staff. They accomodate big groups. For what they are trying to be, a pizza place with good food and a place you can hang with friends/family and watch sports or whatever, I think they have accomplished this very well.

This establishment is notorious for their delicious pizza. They have a fantastic cheese-less pizza that is great for people like myself who go occasionally lazy with dieting, but still count cals. I've also attended their "all you can eat" pasta night (for 6.99- five different sauces, three different noodle selections, salad, breadsticks) that was fabulous and their was no need to even get seconds thanks to their generous portons. They also make great mixed drinks and have tolerable wine available.

I've driven by Shield's for over 5 years without stopping in. My fiancee frequents the Starbucks next door and suggested we check it out. Since she's a pretty picky eater and doesn't usually suggest we try a pizza place I jumped all over the chance. What a great place. The atmosphere was simply nostalgic and reminded me of Villapianos from the movie "That Thing You Do". Service was fast and there wasn't a wait to get a table (although we went for dinner on a Sunday night). We went vegetarian and ordered the Athenian pizza with a Michigan salad. The Athenian has a mix of feta and mozzarella cheese with spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms. The Michigan Salad has greens, dried cherries, crumbled bleu cheese, walnuts and mushrooms. The raspberry vinaigrette was a little thick and too sweet for my taste. All of the vegetables in the salad and the pizza tasted like they were just picked from the garden. We also had an order of beer battered shrimp which was surprisingly good as well. I'll be heading back to Shield's and probably get the boys to join me on the next trip. Maybe we'll hit them up for the All You Can Eat spaghetti night. Table 19, your pizza's ready...

Only I had take-out from Shields so I can only based the review on the pizza itself. I ordered the large Pepperoni Prize, which was okay but really doubt it was truely worth the 16 dollars I paid for it. The sauces are a bit weird to me here along with at Buddy's, which I'm not real high on their pizza either. Shields is okay if you're looking for that nostalgic niche place, but it really wasn't worth it to me.

i went last sturday night for a friends surprise birthday party.staff is awesome. food is good enough. liked the private back room although decor is a little dated. all in all they were very accomodating to our group. will most likely be back.

Seriously, seriously overrated. I went to Shield's with a group ranting and raving about the pizza. The pizza, however, just isn't very good. I managed to eat one slice of the veggie pizza, and left feeling sick. If you want a family restaurant atmosphere with good pizza, why not take a bit of a drive out to Buddy's?

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
