Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Consistent good tasting tacos. Also the jr burrito is big. Great price/value. I like the different sauces you can choose from.

Disappointed...had the soft corn meat taco...there was no cheese...and very little meat...very bland...I've never had to put salt on a taco before! The corn taco shell has lousy and I Had to ask for sour cream...
(2)Susan S.
Decent food but EXPENSIVE . Love their tacos and chips and salsa but not worth the extra money.

This was a really great place! My girlfriend and I were staying next store and came all three days of our visit. The owner, Jason, is a nice guy who's usually there and is very accommodating. He also gave us some great suggestions for breweries and wineries in the area. They've only been open a few weeks but they are off to a great start! The spicy Mexican sausage and spicy pork were awesome but the highlight of this little place is the homemade Horchata! This amazing rice and cinnamon concoction was creamy and smooth and oh so addictive. They are not kidding when they say Large burrito! It's huge - we took ours back to the hotel and ate as a snack later that night. The salsas are fresh and very hot and they have a good selection (including Jarritos and Mexican Coca Cola). I think the prices were average for this quality of food. If we ever stop back in Stevensville (and considering how much we enjoyed our winery weekend, that will likely happen) we will surely stop here.

Driving through and called ahead and they made up a burrito perfectly for me. It was absolutely enormous. Next time I'll get the junior burrito.

Amazing food! They opened a week ago and I have gone 5 days in a row. If you like authentic mexican food this is the place for you. Highly recommend this place.

We stopped on our way back from Texas and, believe it or not, this was better than anything we had there. The bathrooms and restaurant were clean. The food and service were top notch!

Ordered three different items from the ala carte menu and was disappointed by all of them. The basic ingredients all seemed to be pretty low quality and even a little soggy. I was hoping this place would be sort of like a Taco Cabana - cheaper tex mex with the salsa bar - but the quality seemed to be really lacking, and the prices weren't good enough to justify it.
(2)David C.
I really wanted to like this place. The salsas were amazing, the beef steak tacos not so much. If it was not for drowning my tacos in salsa I wouldn't have eaten them. Maybe I'm judging harshly being mexican, but owners need to know this.

Okay-- I've been here a couple more times now. The salsa bar is definitely a solid feature of this place. It is fresh and much better than the jarred choices you will find at the store, and more interesting than what you will find at most Mexican restaurants. As I said last time, take the hot-hotter-hottest signs seriously if you have the average Midwestern spice tolerance. The steak tacos are quite tasty--not quite taco nirvana like you can get at some joints (that one special place over in Benton Harbor that I won't shut up about), but they are reliably good and a bit larger than some places. They are great if you live in or near Stevensville and don't want to make a big drive. The tamales come with carnitas pork, and are quite good. Two is enough for a small meal, but three will work if you know you are hungry. This past time was the first time I got food and it wasn't all wrapped and bagged as if it were to-go. They put everything on a plate. It was nice to have everything without unnecessary wrapping. I received chips, even though I didn't get a combo, and I could tell they had been fried on location and had that nice, multi-layer crunch to them. The service has been quick and consistently friendly. My main criticism is that there seems to be no incentive for a combo. It seems to be at least the price of ordering everything ala carte. All the same, I know that running a business and employing people is expensive. Perhaps combos are just nice ways of presenting a suggested meal. I'm happy to go there again for a fast Mexican fix, even if it is a buck or two more than I want to spend. All things considered, it is about the same price as eating at Qdoba, but you get some awesome sauces and a more homestyle take on the food.

Great place! The ingredients all seem fresh and they give generous portions. Also, the cilantro-lime sauce they have is quite delicious.

I'm giving Rios 5/5 stars for 5 reasons: 1. Location - this is THE only Mexican food available in stevensville. It's quick access from the interstate and on the main drag of stevensville restaurants 2. Atmosphere - we are talking about granite counters, slate tile, flat screen menu screens... It's all very comfortable and modern 3. Quality - fresh, delicious, and well, amazing! 4. Quantity - my husband and I split a 15 inch pork burrito for $11. We choose rice and beans as our side. I, of course over ate and I ordered a chicken quesadilla for my 14 month old son. He ate about a tenth and loved it! I have leftovers... Yea! 5. Service - the young lady taking our order was extremely pleasant and informative. Our food came fast, but not in a gross fast food restaurant way, it was more like a 'we want to serve people in a timely matter' kind of way. Either way I would have waited much longer and been just as happy with my meal! Thanks Rios! We will be back!

To me, it seems just as good -- if not better -- than the New Buffalo original. We had a few carne asada quesadillas and a chorizo quesadilla (if you couldn't tell, these are the things to get at Rios), and they were just as crispy/chewy/cheesy/meaty as I'd hoped for. And since you get two of them, with a side and drink included, for ~$10, it's really a pretty damn good deal. Why anyone would choose any one of the myriad nationwide chains in the area over this place is beyond me - Rios' food is just so much more flavorful, fresh and authentic. The only issue with the place is the location - being tucked into a side road underneath the freeway means it probably doesn't get a lot of traffic passing in front of it. So next time you want a quick, cheap lunch, make the turn down Marquette Woods Rd and show support for this local business.
(5)Ben B.
My rule of Mexican places is - the dirtier it looks, the better the food will be. While the Rios in New Buffalo looks like it should be condemned, the food is incredible. This Rios location looks much nicer and I thought the food was a notch below. Ignore the address when trying to find this place. When you get off I-94 at exit 23, head north on Red Arrow Highway until your first opportunity to turn left. Take that turn as though you're heading to the Cracker Barrel. Rios is just a little beyond that. If you see a cemetery and a Meijer on your left, turn around and drive back under the highway. The employees here were absurdly friendly for a fast food joint. The woman at the counter answered all our questions patiently and even offered to get an umbrella to shade us when she saw we were headed outside to eat. Perhaps the most impressive feature of this Rios is the free SALSA BAR. Lots of different flavors to try. Why doesn't every Mexican restaurant have this? Amazing. I ordered a chicken burrito and it bitch-slapped my hunger into oblivion. I'll be back to Rios - a hidden Mexican gem along I-94.

Found Rios on yelp. I'm pretty picky about my tacos. Authentic is super important. Rios is authentic. Que Bueno! I had a pork taco which was fab. This might be our new fav for the road trip home from MI to IL.

Tried this place for the first time during a recent trip to the area. I ordered the chicken quesadilla combo with beans and rice. The quesadilla was very different from any other quesadilla I've ever had. It was more like a soft taco, rather than being flat and grilled. That's not really a complaint, just an observation. The ingredients seemed fresh, and the chicken was very nicely seasoned. In spite of that, I think I would still have said it was only average were it not for the fresh cilantro in it. I absolutely love fresh cilantro and that alone definitely earned this place another star. It would be enough to get me back here if I were in the area again to try another item with the fresh cilantro in it As far as the other things go, the chips were good (I snuck a couple of my husband's), and the rice and beans were both ok as well. The place wasn't a dive, but it could have been a little cleaner. The waiter was very friendly.

Food was just okay. We had two large burritos, a large guacamole and chips. The large guac was really two tiny containers. I'd rank it a step above Taco Bell and a step below Chipotle. Unfortunately it double the price of Chipotle per item. Way overpriced. Hot sauces were watered down too. Won't be returning.

Taco Tuesday & Thursday are where it's at! $.99 tacos, seriously? Yeah, I'll take 5! Great food, good decor and clean, with great service from Amanda make this a great place to get good Mexican food! Huge burritos, fresh salsas, and good tacos! Get Mexican sodas or a fountain pop to drink. Love it!
(5)Katheryn L.
Fanfreakingtastic food! I have been going here since its inception and have gotten the jr spicy chicken burrito with chips and guacamole rather than salsa. The guac is extra but as with everything else it's delicious! The only thing I don't like is the salsa that comes with the chips, it tastes of canned tomato. The salsa bar however is amazing and the guys that cook the food are the two nicest guys! Best Mexican food in the area as far as value and quality is concerned.

We were on our way to St Joseph and stopped here on a whim a few weeks ago. It had the look and feel of a chain (I couldn't quite figure out what restaurant location they had taken over, maybe an Arby's?), but upon entering, it clearly wasn't. The girl who took our order was PHENOMENAL. Very chatty, happy to offer recommendations and gave us lots of background on the company. In terms of food - for a company of only a few restaurants, I was shocked at how high the prices were. Nonetheless, it was all fantastic. We ordered an array of items, and our favorite was the burrito. The tacos were great, but the corn tortillas were mush by the time we got to our hotel and ate them. We visit New Buffalo often and I hear there is another location; I plan to visit!

Food is consistently good here. I usually get a Jr. Burrito. Nothing Jr. about it, they are huge. I like the Spicy Pork, the Steak or the Chicken. Combo comes with a huge bag of Chips and Salsa, plus a drink too. They also have a killer Salsa Bar where they have at least 6 salsas ranging from mild to very hot. Friendly, clean, fast and very reasonable. I go to the one in Stevensvillle, but they have multiple locations.
(4)Sam W.
Great place. Great value. Friendly staff. Authentic Mexican food, 100x better than big chain restaurants. 2 minutes off the freeway. Will definitely make it a regular stop on our frequent trips to Chicago.
(4)Tom K.
Great place. The pin on the yelp is wrong. Just go to the other side of the freeway. Everything was delicious. The wife and I had soft flour tacos. Beef, spicy chicken and fish tacos. All were very authentic with fresh ingredients. The chips and salsa that come with a combo were some of the best I've had. My mother got the taco salad which was huge, again delicious. All the extra sauces were home made and extremely fresh. The hot ones (green) are a must try for spicy lovers. Great place, we will always stop on the way back from Chicago!!
(5)Zechariah S.
Please don't judge this place based on its location. The staff was courteous and the food was tasty and delivered quickly. I'll be sure to stop by next time I'm in the area.
(5)Becky M.
This is a really nice spot right off the highway. A good, local option with fast and friendly service. It's pretty kid friendly, except that there's no changing tables in the restrooms. But, we mentioned that to the staff and they said they'd bring it up at their next meeting. Delicious food! We especially liked the beef flauta. We will definitely return.
(5)Arnie N.
An amazing alternative to -large Mexican franchise chain redacted-. The food and salsas are great! And huge! I got a large wet burrito once - it hurt me. The small is quite adequate, TYVM. Had a tamale, but wasn't impressed - other options are better. Good selection of meats for inside your selections, the tortillas are pretty fresh. I'll be back regularly.
(4)Natalie S.
Just as delicious as the other locations! Friendly staff, clean inside and out and GREAT food.
(5)John L.
Had 2 Tacos and Chips, the food is more Tex Mex then authentic Mexican food. The food quality was OK but nothing great. If you order a side of chips you do not get any Salsa, you have to order a side of salsa at an additional cost. At over $4.00 for a chip and salsa proved too much for me, and about $2.50 for an average tasting Taco I felt the price was pretty high for what I received. The portions sizes are average at best, a big drawback was a $0.25 charge for a cup of water when others do it for free. Overall the price point was higher then what I expected for their combo menu and they did not have any items on a value menu. For a lunch meal the price is too high and the overall food quality was too low for me to rank this place higher. Average Tex Mex food at an above average price.

Really solid fast food place. Way better choice than the BK down the street. Employees were very friendly and welcoming. Large portions. The salsa bar is cool but was not that impressed with the various salsas. Food was tasty. Chips were great. Clean. One odd thing--the ladies restroom, while clean--had no mirror!
(4)Bob C.
Pretty mediocre Mexican food. I got a burrito and thought it was not even as good as a Qdoba or Chipotle. Visits: 1

Inspiring, well-crafted and shockingly delicious fast food Mexican. I would like to teleport this restaurant to Las Vegas and eat at it 2 or 3 times a week. Easily the best (and most bountiful) tacos I've had on the road - ever. That includes anywhere in California or Arizona. Perhaps the fact that the span of interstate between the City of Chicago and Rios is 90 minutes of food no-mans-land had a little to do with it, but even if that's the case, it is a reality and you will feel the exact same way about the food here. Amazing, large wholesome and sturdy soft corn tortillas holding the tacos together. And the very pro salsa bar actually packs a lot of HEAT and my scalp was perspiring after the first bite - that takes a lot to do. The salsas are not just hot, they are tasty, too - which makes them addictive. Lean, generous portions of carnitas, carne asada, lengua, and many other protein choices made it impossible to declare a favorite. A twilight zone experience - no way could this be happening here - but it WAS and I have three witnesses who can all attest to Rios' greatness. When Misti told me it was a chain, I could not believe it. This food is made/engineered with so much LOVE! If you are driving through the area and don't eat here you are making a huge mistake.

Pretty darn good! If u live in stevensville, this place is great. I'm not sure of its good enough to be a destination restaurant but its pretty good authentic Mexican if u live in the area. And it has a DRIVE THRU Great for when guests come to visit or u don't feel like cooking Pico de gallo- very good Guacamole- very good Chips- very good Spicy chix taco - pretty good Spicy pork taco- pretty good Red salsa for the chips-horrible salsa on the free salsa bar for the food-good The chip salsa tasted like tomatoe sauce and I returned it. but, they have a little salsa bar that u can help urself and those 3 salsas were very good. The tacos had a lot of meat which was great and the flavor was decent but not the best tacos I've had. The chips are greasy but delicious. Guac had no fillers, just avocados, onion, tomatoe, lime juice. Pico was just cut up veg, no sugar which is how I like it. I am from Chicago and know my Mexican food! So go for it!
(4)Eric R.
Food was great lots of good options to pick from. The portions are very large so you get what you pay for, I had the large burrito and it was like eating a football. This place has a great salsa bar too from mild to hot and different flavors. I don't think this place is very authentic but it tastes great. It's now my tied for my second most favorite mexican place in the area.
(4)Alicia W.
Yum yum yum! And I do mean yummmmm! I've eaten a lot of mexican food in my time, but Rios is one of the best! You will not be disappointed. Don't be deterred from the salsa bar. I'm a medium salsa person and the lowest level of heat is hot. Their hot is about medium and freaking delicious! I wish we has a Rios by me, but I will stop whenever I am up here in Michigan!
(5)Tiffany C.
We loved this little gem on our way from Chicago to Michigan. There are few good options in this area. We loved the salsa bar. So many delicious choices to try! The tacos were great! Lots of food at a great price. Will definitely stop here again.
(5)J C.
The best steak quesadillas ever!!! Huge yummy burritos. I love this place!!
(5)Erica R.
I love this place! Eat there almost everyday! Service is EXCELLENT and food is to die for, i get the chicken flautas! Jr burrito is big enough for two!!
(5)Alan S.
We agree completely with the review by Carmen O. Much better food than one has any right to expect in a fast good restaurant. Very pleasant and timely service. Very nice atmosphere. We'll be back. Often.
(5)Ally N.
I love this place!! My first time there I had a "junior" burrito, it was anything but junior, it was huge!! I went with the chorizo and added avocado to my burrito. Great idea on my part. The next time I had a quesadilla with the al pastor and a spicy chicken taco. The chicken is delicious but the al pastor is awesome! Also, you have to try the hot sauces while you're there, be careful of the super hot green one! My only critique would be the salsa. It seems like it is made from canned tomatoes, but I tried the pico and that was fresh and yummy. I will definitely be back soon.
