Traveling through Michigan, we figured it was time for some ice cream! We fired up the Yelp app and it pointed us to this Dairy King. One of my favorite things about Yelp is is that it helps us discover new places. Sometimes we get really lucky and experience something completely unique and off our own radar. This review is about Dairy King but it is also about the amazing town of Plymouth, which it calls home. If you are familiar with the movie "Back to the Future", it could've been filmed here. There is an obvious pride in Plymouth and we witnessed it everywhere. The old art-deco movie house is in pristine condition and running newly released films. The town square was vibrant and alive with big band music being played by local non-professional musicians :-) The popcorn vendor was friendly and selling popcorn for a good cause. The entire town simply brought smiles to our faces. It looks like there are also many good restaurants that we look forward to trying out. We've marked Plymouth in our GPS and plan to return soon. Oh right, the ice cream, delicious! The shop creates some really cool flavors and has a perfect 1940's/50's vibe. Don't miss this town, and don't miss stopping for some ice cream to eat while strolling around :-)

This place was a must go when I visited my friend who lives in Canton. I got a small scoop of Butter Pecan Ice Cream in a waffle cone. The line inside was faster than the outside line. Lots of choices. Be aware that it is CASH only.

I got the cupcake and sprinkles flurry but the ice cream to sprinkle ratio was literally 1:1! The texture was horrible and the abundance of crunchies in every bite was too much for me. I threw it out after 2 bites :( every place I've ever been and gotten a cake batter flavored ice cream the sprinkles are super soft and undetectable. Not here :/ 1 flurry and one medium size cup of peanut butter mackinaw fudge ice cream (1 1/2 scoops) was almost $10 Also, the owner kinda had a funky attitude to the guy who didn't have cash since this place is CASH ONLY! One more thing, a poster off the wall fell on a pregnant ladies head- the only thing that guy said to her was "thankfully it was made out of foam" and didn't even apologize or refund her money. Would I come back or recommend them? Probably not

Who doesn't love ice cream on a hot summer day? Dairy King has just on the outskirts of downtown Plymouth and they have a variety of ice cream flavors and types available for your sweet-tooth. This place is cash-only and the prices are pretty comparable to the amount of sweets you get. My friend and I ordered two single cones - chocolate chip chocolate and lemon custard. Service is quick and you are on your way to a yummy snack soon enough!

Quick service, friendly staff, super clean location with plenty of free parking. Delicious ice cream! Try the waffle cone with a scoop of Birthday Cake ice cream. Amazing.

This is a classic neighborhood ice cream shop. They use local Guernsey ice cream and have a wide selection of flavors. They also make a killer shake and flurry. For the people complaining this place is cash only...Why wouldn't it be?!?!?! It's not open all year AND the fees charged and credit card usage would put them out of business. If you want to use a credit card go to DQ. Their lower quality ice cream will please you card holders.

Wow, these are fantastic flurry concoctions! I also really like this area of Plymouth.

I really like this place for their real ice cream. A lot of other places serve just the soft serve, not this place can do both.

My family loves the Dairy King! Such a great DTP staple.

My hubby and I are ice cream fanatics. Honestly, I could eat ice cream every day. I got the chocolate malt at the Dairy King and my husband and I can tell you it is the best chocolate shake we've ever had. Do yourself a favor and go get some Dairy King now.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Dairy King! They have the wares of great local creameries. Service has always been friendly. I love the playdough, mackinaw island fudge, and of course chocolate chip cookie dough. Wish I was still living in that area, but we will probably go back anyways.

Cash only and prepare to wait in line, especially when it's nice outside! Best selection of ice cream, frozen yogurt, soft serve, slushies, popsicles, shakes, malts and flurries. We visit a few times a week and get a medium vanilla cone and a small cookie dough flurry. The flurries are huge and for both we spend about $5. Can't beat that! The girls that work at the window are always very nice.

A charming local ice cream stand, sit-in area at the back. "Homemade" ice cream bars are excellent, especially the Turtle Bars that look more like a hockey puck than a bar. Vanilla ice cream, topped with toasted pecans and covered in caramel sauce on one side, covered in a thick chocolate coating that doesn't melt all over you or break off and fall off at the first bite. Also on offer are local Guernsey brand ice cream (Excellent!), soft serve, and ice cream based drinks. Friendly service, the teenagers who work there are happy and polite teenagers. Small parking lot behind the building; it could busy and crowded.

This is a cute, archetypal neighborhood ice-creamery. According to the lore posted on the wall inside, it was once a Dairy Queen, until an identity change in the 1970s, and voila, it's now Dairy King. Anyhow, around 9 p.m., it was still relatively full of people young and old, and I can understand why. The ice cream is Guernsey, which was always one of my favorites growing up. I had the peanut butter fudge, which was really tasty. The portion was generous, but not excessive, and the prices were fine. I imagine that on a warm day it'd be nice to get an ice cream and eat it at the central plaza, so it is a shame that cold weather is fast approaching. Customer service was great, and they even served a few people who came in just as they were closing. That is good service! CASH ONLY

I grew up on this! I really do like it here. It is owned by locals and they seem to keep their help happy. You will always get good service and often a big smile too. It is very clean here which is nice of course. Quality soft serve, happy slushes, the kid beloved slush floats and ever popular flurries. It is my mom's fave place to get a Boston cooler and my dad's to get a black cow. He is also partial to the Guernsey ice cream they carry, including his all time fave butter pecan. They also do dipped ice cream bars and bananas. I love a good chocolate dipped frozen banana rolled in nuts. Wait, that sounds bad doesn't it? You will see locals and their pets stroll by on summer evenings, it is a chill, laid back kind of place even with the lines they can get. Very Plymouth. I think everyone in town comes here. I always have to try to look decent as i will run into people I know or at least knew when I lived here.

Found this great little place for Guernsey ice cream in Plymouth - no more long-ass drives to Northville. Fair prices, fair scoops, 'nuff said. Quick tip: There is a service window up front on the street, but you can get served inside on the side of the building too. Check the line both places.

We've been coming to Dairy King since it was a white wooden stand in the late 70s-early 80s. Even after it remodeled, it didn't lose its charm and is still my first choice for soft serve ice cream. I still try to get here when I'm in town. UPDATE 08-05-2011: Stopped in late to see the place, there was a good sized group even at 10:00 pm. And they were serving CREAMSICLE TWIST! As if their vanilla wasn't good enough, they twisted it with orange. Oh, nirvana - a little lighter, and most refreshing! A large cone was, as of today, only $2.45 including tax. That's less than a lot of soft serves and custards, including Culver's. Excellent value. Caveat: they only take CASH, so be sure you or a buddy has a few bucks on you when you stop in.

We stop at the Dairy King pretty frequently when we're just out cruising around on nice summer nights. It's always a good time, and I actually don't mind that there's usually a line. The people in line and working always seem to be in a good mood, and my daughter loves visiting with the dogs that many customers seem to have with them walking around downtown. My only word of warning is against the silly novelty ice creams. I once got my husband and I the Spiderman ice cream and the Race Car ice cream bars. They were horrible. The bubble gum that I was looking forward to in some sick, twisted way was even stale. I think this was mostly the fault of my own poor taste in choosing, though.

Great ice cream. Definitely beats Dairy Queen! They also have have regular Guernsey ice cream if you just want a normal cone. If your watching your weight they have frozen yogurt. You can really please anyones diet restrictions here. I ordered my favorite flurrie with oreo. The ice cream tasted very good and they put a lot of cookies in it. They have good milk shakes too. You can order from the window out front or you can go inside to order where they have indoor seating also. You can definitely feel that its a classier version of Dairy Queen. It's usually packed during the warm weather and its hard to not get addicted to it.

Hands down the best ice cream in Plymouth! The lines may be intimidating on peak summer nights, but they move very quickly. Delicious soft serve, frozen yogurt and guernsey/stroh's scooped ice cream. Very generous portions and low prices. The service and staff/owner are great. Until I find an equivalent here in NYC, I'm counting down the days until I come home for some DK!

No, it's not Dairy Queen but Dairy King! My husband and I love this independently owned ice cream place. We usually bring our dog, order and sit outside. The tropical and cappuccino chip flurries are so yummy! Tonight I tried the hand scooped key lime ice cream which was amazing! They carry Guernsey's and Sterling ice cream in addition to soft serve. The girls who work here are always so nice. As other reviewers suggested, they will take a long line a move it along quickly. Truly a wonderful warm weather tradition!

The King steps it up on the Queen in this cozy place. I was here last week and it was packed with a line around the corner for the inside and outside windows. However, it seemed like the line was moving a little faster on the inside, so if you don't like to car or people watch down Main st I would suggest going inside. I had the standard soft serve vanilla dipped in chocolate and it was delightful on a warm spring night.

With the prominence of Dairy Queen, the name Dairy King always gets a rise out of me. Were the rest of the independent soft serve places not willing to take the law suit risk? It also makes me think of the part in "American Beauty" when he says, "how does it feel to get F-ed by the king." In this case it actually is "fed." Whatever, Anyway. Bottom line: The ice cream is very good and they don't have to pay frachise fees.

Dairy King Rocks!!! Its my very favorite place to eat ice cream. I go every summer with my dad and eat there almost every night. They have the very best Superman ice cream!!! Everyone that works there are so sweet and kind to all of the customers and there super fast when there is a huge line. The owner is also very sweet and is always working behind the counter with them. Its the best place to be at in the summer.

A staple of downtown Plymouth. Great selection of great treats. It's an absolute must every summer. Only negative is that it's pretty pricey for ice cream.

the Dairy King is excellent! the only reason for 4 stars is there was nowhere to park and there was quite a line, i think we parked at the funeral home, but it was worth the wait. there may be somewhere to park, but we're not from plymouth so we were sorta confused about how to park. i got a banana split flurry and was very happy because they used the 'hard' chocolate that they dip cones in and it was soooo much better than using chocolate syrup which just makes the whole thing taste like chocolate. my husband got a sander's hot fudge sunday which he was reluctant to share with me for obvious reasons and my brother got a twist cone. we were all very happy with our ice cream and can not wait to go back!

This is an adorable independent ice cream place in downtown Plymouth. If you get hot while you're out and about shopping the funky independent shops there, you can stop at Dairy King to cool off. They have a walk up window, but also a generous amount of seating inside, and the building is quaint, in keeping with the feel of Plymouth's downtown. On a recent visit, the one downside was that it was too popular with the local kids. There were about two dozen kids between four and 10 all as part of the same group, and it was noisy and crowded in there. Two or three employees were trying to serve ice cream to a long line of kids, and the dining room was packed. The menu is varied and good, with the usual soft serve, but also several flavors of dipped ice cream and frozen yogurt. For a small child, you can get a cone for under $1, and prices on larger sizes are pretty reasonable. Sundaes come in around $4 or a little less, but they make them big and are generous with the toppings.

A great place to meet friends for ice cream. The line moves quickly and they have all kinds of treats, including soft-serve and hand-scooped ice creams as well as Dolewhip and other frozen goodies. We prefer to eat outside as there is usually a gathering of friendly folks hanging around.
