This was really a toss up between 3 and 4 stars but I settled on 4 due to the clam chowder this year. You must order it if they have it-not too thick but not watery and chock full of REAL clams. Au Sable Inn is one of the ONLY nic(er) places to eat in Oscoda. The owners know this and sometimes it shows in the service and food. My family has a couple cabins down the street and we eat here a few times a summer. This year the place seems to have stepped up it's game both in terms of service and food quality. The food is your standard pub fare with a few mexican options and (sometimes) dinner specials. Each time I have ordered one of the specials, however, they have been out of it. Now I understand that restaurants in town have difficulty gauging the holiday crowds but at one point I had to ask the server exactly what entrees they DID have that evening... Bottom line, if you're hungry for something other than fast food this is yoru best bet in the area. Fish and chips are amazing, mashed potatoes are homemade and the drinks are well made. I am told the place turns into a night club after dinner but, honestly, who goes up north to club it up when there's plenty of firewood stacked?

Going to be honest here. Was looking for breakfast. Saw they had the "open" sign on. Went in and was very rudely told by a woman behind the bar that the restaurant was only open to canoe race participants and their families and that we were not welcome to eat there. Fine. You are having a private party. Then, please, turn the open sign off. Given how we were greeted, I can almost guarantee they won't get my business on my next trip to Oscoda.

I ordered a martini and received a glass with vodka and ice cubes in it, garnished with a salad olive. I've never had a martini served to me like that before! I ordered the prime rib and that was flavorless. The green beans I ordered as a side were not even cooked all the way. Service was absolutely horrible and we had to have the owner bring out condiments that the waitress forgot to bring(and continued to forget even after we asked her repeatedly). The owner even cleaned our table after we had finished with our meal. Four years ago, this used to be a decent restaurant, but now it has gone downhill.

Worst perch dinner that we have ever had! Said It was pan fried lake perch. But it was heavily breaded with no taste at all. Even the sides of potatoes & cole slaw were marginal. They comped the 3 meals. But that's not the point. We were hungry, came for dinner & none of us could eat moe than one piece of fish. Since this is one of the very few restaurants in Oscoda, they need to get their act together. We are up here most of the summer & WILL NOT return. I can cook better with my eyes closed! The other owner did much better in every aspect.

Not good, very limited menu, pulled pork was so over dry and almost burnt, sent it back and got seafood cake instead but it was unimpressive. Very overpriced. Waiter was a great guy but food was really terrible. Kids had burgers which were ok just boring.

Appetizers and drinks pit stop while out exploring town. The room is HUGE and the tables spread out. Nice view to the river canal but they need to clean up the patio which had old patio furniture and a long ago broken bean bag toss game. It took a few minutes for drinks to show up. Apps were quick and pretty good. We had flaming cheese which had a little too much oil on it and not enough lemon to put out the flames so I had to blow it out. The guacamole was really good.

Ok, where is this fabulous "she crab " chowder on the menu? We came there to try out the new owners and menu. Arrived at 6 pm on a Saturday, and very few people in the restaurant . Asked to sit outside because it was a great summer day! Umbrellas were not set up and it was like a deserted island out there. Owners are sitting on a gold mine with that patio that they are not using! A group of 4 came outside for the view and I overheard them say" 40 minute wait with all these open tables". Obviously the dinner rush started. The menu was very limited. We had only a few options of fish. How about a simple walleye or perch dinner! If you are going to try to be "fine dining" with your fancy menu , then try to do it right. Otherwise stick to the basics. As far as the food is concerned: Had the whitefish with lobster cream sauce. Sauce was so bad! It was a bitter, rancid mustard sauce! Not a single hint of lobster!Fish portion was small for an $18 entree. Service needs improvement. We received our salads with no silverware and waited until the waitress finished taken another tables order before getting them to us. The salads were pre-made with finely diced tomatoes and onions, and we knew this since Two of the four salads that were ordered with "no onions "still got them. Sorry, but we will not be back!

So, this place was a 5-star joint, but I had to change my rating. Since the management change, the food has taken the backseat. Portion sizes are odd on most things (fried pickles/chips too small for the price). The fried pickle basket was raw, then 1/2 raw after we sent it back. My club bbq sandwich was soggy from bread to meat to lettuce. The jalapeno potato salad was small and not really potato salad due to the size of the potatoes. My husband's burger was bland with bland chili on it. It seems like the best thing on the menu is the quesadilla since that's the only meal that was eaten completely. I think management has some tweaking to do. I don't think they should have kept the name because Au Sable Inn is known for their ribs, brisket and French dip - most of which are no longer served. Lunch on Memorial Day weekend - dead. Saw one party walk out moments after they were seated! On the other hand, the wait staff was fantastic!

We have eaten here many times, each time hoping to find a treasure. Unfortunately we consistently find their food to be just okay. Not bad, but nothing better than the average cook's kitchen. We stopped going, but the sign saying new management gave us hope. My husband had their roast turkey special...nothing had any flavor..not the turkey, gravy, or stuffing, the fresh green beans were not cooked. Now we like them to have a little crunch..but these were so raw, I am not sure they were cooked at all. I had the chicken salad, and was very surprised it was a warm salad. It was okay, Just nothing special. I did really like the clam chowder. The service was good, decor was nice, their food just average.

I have been in twice for lunch since new owners took over. First time had the club style sandwich, second time for the chicken croissant sandwich. Neither will bring me back for a 3rd. Fries were undercooked both times. First visit was with my mom who sent her meal back for raw fish in the fish sandwich. Second visit was with my son who was served burnt chicken strips, like the meat was so overdone it was crunchy, and my chicken salad sandwich was warm and had cheese on it (maybe my mistake if I didn't read this on the menu, but GROSS) I had high hopes... too bad.

We have been coming to the AuSable Inn for many years with mostly very good results. Tonight was not the case from a service perspective. I ordered a drink from the bartender Donna and she was very rude and did not give me back all my change, building in her own tip, that she did not earn. Our waitress was OK but not very attentive. The food was good but took a long time to get. Overall it does not seem that there is much managing of the business going on. The staff seems to be mostly very young and untrained. I hope that tonight was an exception but I have a feeling that it is more if a rule now. The next night we went to Tait's Bill of Fare just around the corner and had a much better overall experience. The food was very good and the service was excellent. It was an older place with no "Sports Bar" atmosphere, but if you are looking for friendly service and good food, I would recommend going there instead.

New owners with a revamped more upscale menu. The inside looks pretty much the same with the paddles on the wall but there is a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting throughout. Very nice and simple menu that ranged from specialty sandwiches all the way to a Filet Mignon.. My sister and I have been waiting for them to open since they started remodeling about a month ago. We decided to go in for a drink and an appetizer. They are in the process of getting a liquor license and should have it in about a week from what Frank the owner told us. We shared a Queso Dip appetizer and my sister had a cup of the crab bisque soup. May I say that everything we ate was wonderful. The wait staff is young and a little green but everyone was friendly, helpful and just had a great vibe about them. The owner Frank came to the table a few times to chit chat and talk about the restaurant and other things they have going on. So friendly and personable Frank made us feel right at home. It's very refreshing to see that kind of service that you usually only get in the privately owned restaurants. Will we be back, YES because I want to try the Filet and a few other items. They are also featuring a Breakfast buffet on Sundays for now. The first time was on Mothers Day and Frank said the line was out the door and was much busier than expected which caused them to start running out of things. Now that's what I call a successful open. I'm happy and proud of what these guys are doing in Oscoda and I look forward to having more great experiences here especially when they get a liquor license and have bands on the weekend again.

I have eaten there two times since it reopened under the the new owners and I am impressed. I would definitely recommend the blackened grouper entree and the she crab soup which I was told is a specialty of the new chef, James Jones. The service was great and the owners stopped at our table more than once to be sure everything was okay.

AuSable in is about the only place with smoked food. There smoked meatloaf is money! Good nachos with home made chips. Burgers are perfect. Beer is cold.

Wish I could say that the experience never changes. Usually we go to the Inn once or twice during the summer with moderately pleasant meals. Went to dinner Sun.7/8/12 for a birthday dinner and was told right off the bat by our waiter that he didn't know what kind of wines they had. I had to suggest to him that he go ask. Then we were told that they had run out of chardonnay that some of the ladies wanted- couldn't someone have run out to a store before dinner hour and bought a couple of bottles? Hell, I'd have stopped and bought some had I known. After ordering mixed drinks, our waiter told us he didn't know what drinks looked like(not a surprise- he looked about 12) and asked us to just take them off the tray for him. Next we ordered- only to have him tell us that they were out of items that we were ready to order (mussels & BBQ). The shrimp orders were over cooked and the "birthday girl's" salmon was so overcooked that she couldn't finish. When we let the waiter know, he paused for a deer-in-the-headlights look and just walked away. Throughout the meal, we were repeatedly asked, "Are you still workin' on that?" as they try to whisk away side dishes. Let my cole slaw be! All in all, an embarrassingly bad experience for our dinner party. Hey Au Sable owners- train your waitstaff, re-stock your bar, keep an eye on what gets sent out of the kitchen, and have a manager come around to ask if everything is all right. Not impossible, you just have to care seven days a week if you're going to be open seven days a week.

I've only eaten brunch here. All you can eat brunch on the weekends, starting at 10 am, for $7.00. Breakfast staples like eggs and bacon and hashbrowns are all done very well. My only complaint - no fruit.

Great BBQ. Cheap prices big portions. Had the Texas BBQ nachos. I was recommended this by the very friendly staff. Meet the bartender, cook and the BBQ chef. All very friendly asked me and my wife all about where we are from. Even told us about things to do in the area. Great food drinks and friendly local flavor.

Jan P. put it best: "Not a bad choice by local standards." I mean, this is Oscoda people. We've been going to the Au Sable Inn for years when we come visit in the summer, and it never changes. The food is ok, but not great. They do smoke their own stuff, and the brisket is very tasty. This is the kind of place where you need to stick to the burgers and bbq. If you're looking for a California-cuisine salad or anything more than standard bar fare, keep looking. Burgers and fries my friends. And the service is friendly. Young, but friendly. We only wish they didn't make the girls wear referee shirts all the time. Maybe on Sundays when there's NFL on. But all year? You can bring your kids here and not worry about them acting like monkeys. They can run around on the grass by the river in back, or play a few video games while you put down a couple of cold beers. When it's 90 degrees outside and the wind has died, the Au Sable Inn keeps the AC kicking. This is a quintessential 3-star joint, and if you don't expect anything more than that you'll have a great time.
