My husband and I went there for lunch. We split the Monte Cristo sandwich (which was soggy and bland), and each had a cup/bowl of soup. One thing that shocked me was the prices for our soup: My husband ordered a bowl of their chicken/mushroom soup (also bland and tasteless) and I had a cup of the same soup -- they cost us $2.99 and $2.79, respectively! I'm not cheap, but I think there should be more than 20cent difference between a bowl and a cup? The clientele is GERIATRIC, which I guess explains the bland flavor of everything. The salad bar looked to be very good -- I wish I had ordered that instead. But truthfully, I will not be back again.

Ordered the Sir Sirloin steak it could have used some seasoning. The service was good and fast but the food was the down fall you get just one side with your order either a potato sir broccoli. For $15 not worth it.

Salad bar had a nice mix of salad options and two soups. I had the chicken noodle soup, it was so salty that I couldn't taste the soup. I also ordered the Seafood Alfredo; the noodles were over cooked and overall it just wasn't that good. Fortunately, I had a nice glass of cabernet. I had to laugh when the old guy sitting at the next table said, "This is the worse soup that I've ever had."

Food was poor and not worth the money. Don't get the turkey broc melt! It was nasty! Should've stuck with the soup and salad bar which wasn't that great either.

Dreadful. Our family of four ate dinner there. We had four different dishes and each was very poor. I can't understand a positive review for this place. Maybe their breakfast is edible, but the dinner here is not.

Worst food you could ever get. This is the kind of stuff super old people eat with to taste or teeth.

My aunt and I went to Dow Gardens to see the butterfly exhibit then afterward needed some grub. On the way back to the highway we stubbled on this family restaurant-- what a great find! It looked like the place was closed but we decided to go in anyway. We were greeted immediately with smiles and sat. We checked out the salad bar first. It was full of fresh ingredients and homemade comfort pasta salads and sides. Aunt Betty noticed another area for food and asked what it was for and they told us a seafood buffer was starting in about an hour. "Aww man" we said. "It sounded so great ..." The server ( Bernadette ) surprised us and had the chef being out the buffet early. The food was scrumptious and the service was welcoming.

Excellent breakfast special until 11:30 Monday through Friday for 4.75 choice of breakfast meat , eggs , potatoes and pancakes or toast. They also serve mimosas and bloody Mary's as well for breakfast . My bacon was mostly fat and I wasn't able to eat much of it . Excellent salad bar ! Full bar. But the service wasn't very good , we asked her to take our order and hold it until the rest of our party got here and she said she would but brought it out anyways, before they got here. I asked for water when asked what I wanted to drink and had to wait ten minutes before I finally asked someone else for it. This place is very clean and family friendly if the server was more attentive it would have been amazing and I would have given it five stars. I would recommend coming here but you might have to remind yours servers about your needs if you get the same one we had. I had to ask for water during my meal and she forgot when I reminded her she said yes I heard you but my hands are full. I asked for a napkin and she forgot so I asked again. She seemed very rushed and kind of rude. By the end of the meal I was pretty unhappy with her service in general. She made the meal an annoying experience .

Getting sick of these "Corporate, cookie - cutter restaurants" so we went here for dinner. I had the Seafood alfredo...and it was fantastic!! It had the right amount of sauce, thick, rich and not too much garlic. And it had some real seafood in it! Unfortunately, my husband's ribs were too tough to cut, so he knew he couldn't chew them. The server, Linda took them away, came back with a menu and reminded my husband about the beef tips and rice special. He got them almost immediately and they were hot and delicious. The server made sure we didn't have an empty coffee cup and the salad bar was filled with unique salads (love the teriyaki salad, sauerkraut salad..yum). Our only regret was we didn't have time to enjoy the salad bar.

Meh at best. Lots of menu choices, much like a Denny's or IHOP. The breakfast and lunch buffet is nothing special. Omelettes are ok. I don't need to come back again.

There is just something to love about this old school home style restaurant. Basic home cooking, good portions, good value. I just like coming here when I am in town - there are finer places, there are chains, but I gotta love it here for the Michigan experience - good, basic good, generous portions, cheap drinks.

A great place for home cooking and friendly service. Tonight's special was meatloaf, buttered carrots and real mashed potatoes with gravy. All you care to eat for $6. I opted for the broasted chicken with broccoli and the salad bar. I tried the homemade chicken soup and tomato soup. Very good. The salad bar reminded me of a potluck or picnic where everyone brings their best homemade dish. I'm so full! Yum!

Pretty good food. I had one of the hot dinners with turkey and homemade bread and mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. Our waitress was really friendly and had a great sense of humor. They even serve alcohol. I noticed the little old ladies next to our table were drinking mimosas and eating ice-cream ;)

Great soup and salad bar. If you order off the menu you will wait. Servers are friends of owner and will chat with each other while customers wait.

dinner was very greasy! My seafood pasta was swimming in a pool of melted butter. I could see a pool of yellow liquid on my plate and it was disgusting. My seafood pasta has one reasonably-sized shrimp, and the rest of the shrimp are smaller than pop corn. I will die of heart attack very soon if I eat there once a week. Salad bar had good soup though. but still, the level of grease in my meal was over the top. Staff was very friendly.

I live in Midland and my spouse likes the perch on Friday, so every once in a while we go back to try it, but I am always disappointed with my meal. The salad bar is okay, but last time I had it, I notice a lot of people's sleeves dragging in the dishes as they reach for items in the back. I had hairs in several items. Not really restaurants fault, but a factor of salad bars. They do have a nice "sneeze" guard though. But if you don't like buffets and salad bars or fish , there is not a lot to choose from if you are looking for healthy, low fat meals. This visit, I ended up with a small low quality steak and vegetables for $10.99. I asked for a discount because it included salad bar and I was not getting it, but they were not able to do that. I understand not making the exception, but it was disappointing as there were slim options. Drinks are very reasonable priced and restaurant was very clean. Staff is attentive, but I would agree with another reviewers statement that regulars get better service. I think the prices are a little on the high side and tend to larger portions. I would suggest offering more choices of lighter meals at lower prices. The perch dinner is $15.99 but both people at our table took half of it home. Be nice if they could offer smaller size for reduced price like other local restaurants. I offered a 2 star rating for my experiences, but my spouse would probably offer a 4 star.

I've been eating at shirlene's since I was little...it's one of those places that I equate with home. The Monte cristo sandwich is always a choice that at least one person I dine with makes...it's plausible to call it a 'greasy spoon' restaurant I imagine, but if you're going to order something that sounds fried, odds are it will be! I personally eat the soup and salad bar whenever I go. The soup is always delicious, and I like that they colour their ranch dressing green so it can't be mistaken for other dressings...but this is what I grew up with! It may not appeal to everyone, but I think it adds to the charm of the restaurant! They have fabulous ambrosia salad!

Both food and decor and very bland. I ordered a chicken breast dinner and what came out was clearly a frozen, tiny hockey puck that had been microwaved. It honestly reminded me of the cafeteria food from grade school. Very disappointing. Their breakfast buffet is also underwhelming; everything is steamed and limp. Every few years we give the place a try again, hoping things have improved, but we end up wondering why we bothered.

We really enjoyed our dinner here. Atmosphere is pleasant. Service was very attentive: taking away dirty plates, filling water glasses, etc. super fast. The soup and salad bar is terrific. Very fresh, good quality produce, with interesting options like edamane. Good choice of salad dressings, including raspberry vinegrette and tomato bacon. Great choice of the side salads, including the traditional pea and peanut, broccoli, ambroisia along with pasta salad, cole slaw, pickled beets, baked beans and more. Even... chocolate pudding. (yes, on the salad bar.) Tonight's soups were tomato basil and creamy asparagus, and the asparagus was so good I had to go back for more. I had the steak and baked potato, which was tasty and just what I wanted. (Altho' the steak looked lonely without a vegetable... but that's what the salad bar is for) They offered steak in various sizes, even a 5 oz version so you don't stuff yourself. Prices were good, too.

100 % home made ! This is a favorite of ours because it is NON SMOKING Shirlenes is a typical family restaurant. Friday night fish and seafood specials.A salad bar is always available with home made soups. This is not your average (pre packaged salads) Everything is made here and is delicious. Daily specials that change regularly. The staff and atmosphere are warm anf friendly.

Good old fashioned home style cooking. Kind of seems like a throwback from another era. Food is decent, but nothing notable. But if you are looking for an independent family restaurant with a small town feel, this is your place.

Food is OK but service depends entirely on whether you're a "regular." If you are a regular, you get lots of attention. If you're not, expect to be ignored if you want more coffee, soda, water, etc. Tried it three times -- same experience every time.
