U.P. North Sandwich & Pasty Menu

You call this a pasty? Any Pasty in the LP I'm suspicious. My gandma is a yooper and a Finn, and she knows her pastys, and has a strong opinion about them. "the Finns improved on the Cornish Pasty," she will always say. A real Pasty needs rutabaga. I took her here to see what she thought, and she was not impressed. I wasn't either. I have had a salad on occasion, or a greasy ruben. Take it from the Finn, if you want a great pasty you're going to have to head north.

Kept driving by wondering what this place was, and knowing I still had to try a Pasty (can't live in MI not trying one!), we finally dropped in. We were also pleasantly surprised as other reviews here have noted- the food has a real home made feel to it - nothing chain store 'ish' and not to greasy or sugary etc. It felt like eating good food at a friends. The pasty was real hearty and filling, nothing overpowering, gravy was subtle and tasty (not just some salty mess). I don't like gravy much, but this one was nice. Also had one of the house special sausage sandwiches which was great too. Prices were great, service was friendly - a great little place to grab simple tasty food. They have some fun little MI treats you can buy up front too. Skip out on subway, check these guys out!

My grandfather came over from Finland when he was 18 years old and settled in the U.P. This is the closest anyone has made a pasty like I used to have them with the family. I don't put gravy on it and typically just get one to go for lunch. For ~$5, I'm filled for lunch and into dinner time. Very good food! I've been going everyday during my work on-sites for lunch.

Not sure what's up with the pasty snobbery going on in some of the reviews, but this really can't be beat for $4.95 plus $0.75 (I think) for gravy. The chicken one is like a big chicken pot pie that you add the gravy to, and my wife loves it. I could do with a higher grade of meat in the beef pasty, but then these things are $5, not $7 or $8, and they're BIG. A little too big for lunch, even. The crust is nice and tender, they're 9 months pregnant with filling and I've driven them 20 minutes home and they were still hot. 95% of anybody that tries it will love it, and for that last 5%, well, they're probably picky about everything. The only two pasties I've tried in the UP were half the size for the same price, and no better in terms of flavor than what I've had from this place. I wouldn't worry about what someones "gandma" had to say, and there's definitely rutabaga in there, all right. It's not haute cuisine, but I'm giving it a 5 instead of a 4 because it's the only game in town, and the price is all kinds of right. The Richland location is just as good, too. :)

I love this place! So far I haven't been disappointed. I do have to say the steak pasty is better than the chicken pasty, but that's just my preference. They even deliver to my house which should earn them an extra star.

Great food and friendly service! Worth trying for sure, and might as well grab a punch card while you're there because you will be back.

Excellent little restaurant. My FIVE star rating arrives by category only: a tiny specialty (northern food) diner in a small west Michigan town. Don't go for the view, or for the atmosphere, go for excellent value--well prepared hearty food served quickly by the friendliest staff in an always clean restaurant. A few tables to sit and chat with friends over a steaming, gravy-laden pasty like your mother made...or carry out a bag full and pop them in the freezer for a nice surprise.

We stopped in to have the pasty. They were good for the LP but not great. Both our pasty's crust were dark and overcooked and a little dry. The meat inside could be better but for the price it's acceptable. AOK for lunch. Pasty's in the actual UP are much better. OK for here though. Don't expect service at your table but the window service is good. Gravy is good and reasonable.

Definitely one of my favorite places back home in my small little town of Allegan. Now, the decor, and the building itself is nothing spectacular, but don't let that steer you away from the mouth watering food, and fantastic staff. You walk up to the counter to take your order while checking out the memorabilia and pictures of the U.P. while you wait. They are very speedy with everything and the staff is always always great and very friendly. They really have a huge verity of great food on their menu, and of course they're known for their Pastys, I have never had one...but If I do, I'm sure this place is just as authentic if you were to get one from the Upper Peninsula. (Minus the scenery (; ) But I generally get the Buffalo Chicken Sub..to die for, and I am an avid buffalo chicken lover! They also have great apps (their fries and cheese balls..yummm) And they have great Fudge...you can't NOT expect to have fudge if you go to a place called U.P. North...It's only fitting. Can't wait to stop in when I visit home!

If you can't get to da UP but are hungry for a pasty this place is ideal. The pasties are generous in size and the ingredients are well seasoned. For a decent price of about $6 you can have a full meal. They do have a small dining area if you need to stay to eat. And they also sell fudge - the other Up North favorite food of many.

This place was a lot of fun. I was visiting from out of town and told I had to try a pasty. It was huge! We went for lunch a couple times that week. The portion sizes for everything are quite generous and the menu is large. If you're in town looking for a quick lunch and good value this is the place to visit. I highly recommend the sweet potato tater tots. They oddly reminded me of french toast but they were delicious.

It was ok.. pasty's were decent but the sides, not so much!... I would get the pasty's again though.

You might drive past thinking that place doesn't look like much and drive by, that's your first mistake this place is fantastic. I ordered the chicken cordon blue sandwich not knowing what to expect. Boy was I pleasantly surprised the sub was huge and came on super fresh/soft bread. I could come here and just order the bread the sandwich comes on it was that good. Prices are very reasonable I think my sandwich was $7 and some change. Not much seating but they do have some outdoor seats available when weather permits. I would strongly recommend giving this place a try a real treat for anyone in the Allegan area!

I ordered the pasty with gravy, wife ordered the chicken salad on a croisant, and my son had the kids turkey sub. Each meal was 5-star. Great bread for the sandwich, the pasty was phenomenal (love the gravy). Clean restaurant and great service. What a pleasant surprise!
