We stayed in the Sir Lancelot room. It had such a beautiful view and the room was perfect, just like the pictures! It was really enjoyable to walk through the woods and take the paddle boat on the lake. Breakfast was delicious both day that we stayed. It is a quiet and romantic atmosphere. We loved it!

Very Disappointed...Very Overpriced. Staff not honest about travel times to Holland, Saugatuck, Holland and such. Plan on 45 - 50 minutes to get anywhere! Not the 20 - 30 minutes they will tell you. The SPA packages are way overpriced...go to the Four Season if you want a real SPA. The room was clean but needs updating...the rooms should be priced about $125-$149 not anywhere close to where they are marked. Buyer beware...

This is the perfect place to isolate yourself from the hustle and bustle of the city and life's stresses. Castle in the Country is a wonderful bed and breakfast! The rooms are so modern, yet cozy. The Bo & I stayed in the Camelot Suite and it was such a relaxing stay. The jacuzzi in this suite was amazing! Not to mention the rustic scenery and walking trails! Ruth, the innkeeper, made us a wonderful breakfast! The meal topped off what was a beautiful romantic stay in Allegan, MI. There is not much sightseeing to do in this area, but if you want some quality alone time and the atmosphere to do so, then this is your go-to place for sure. We heard that there is a very good restaurant called Salt of the Earth nearby, but we couldn't try it since it was closed. We decided to pack some easy to assemble Italian eats for our dinner. I made some pickled peppers and onions, and bought pate, cured Italian meats, sesame & rice crackers, cheeses, and red & white wines from Whole Food's and the People's Food Co-op in Ann Arbor. I got some great smoked peppercorn gouda, cambozola, brie, & mozzarella. The B&B also has a microwave that we used to heat up our ravioli. There was also a small fridge where we could keep our wine & left over food as well! The Bo and I cannot wait until our next visit!

It was out first ever stay at a B&B and what a great stay. The room was wonderful and the hot tub was relaxing. We took a picnic down to the lake and spent the day paddling around the lake while enjoying a bottle of wine. Don't forget to sit out on the porch at night and enjoy a fire. The inn keepers are warm and friendly and ready to give advice on ways to spend the day. Breakfast is also good, but lite on portions.

From My Wife: So, the stars aligned and my husband and I were going to be without kids for a few days. Coincidentally, this was also our 15th anniversary. So, I figured we should go away for a long weekend. After extensive research (and I really mean extensive), I decided upon Castle in the Country in Allegan, MI. This was a three hour drive from Traverse City, MI, where we were dropping off our son at camp, and it was roughly still in the direction of home - which is Pittsburgh, PA. Castle in the Country was Absolute Perfection! We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and were graciously greeted by Besan. I'm not sure what her official role is, but we had previously communicated through email when I asked for information about nearby activities. Upon check in we were told about the many amenities including the DVDs available to borrow, the fire pit that we were invited to use, the coffee and tea that's always available and the chocolate chip cookies in case we needed a snack. We stayed in the Sir Lancelot suite, which is located in the Castle Keep - the second building which is set further back from the road. Our room was beautifully appointed with a lovely view of the pond. It was on the third floor and is one of the five suites in the Castle Keep. Our room had a contemporary yet warm and inviting feel - with a very comfortable king bed, the softest sheets I've ever slept on (and you can order them through the B&B - which of course I did!), a very generously sized 2 person jacuzzi, a fireplace and a private bathroom. No detail was left unturned. The sitting room on the first floor of the Castle Keep was comfortable and inviting with soft background music and a picturesque view. Always available was an extensive selection of coffees and teas. The kitchenette also had a refrigerator with bottled water and soda. The cookie jar was filled with Herb's (one of the owners) outstanding chocolate chip cookies. The grounds include a lake with a kayak and paddle boats available to use; however we didn't venture that far, as just outside our door was a screened gazebo, shaded porch and a deck full of comfy furniture - all overlooking the pond and nearby farmland. We scheduled the side-by-side couples massage which was very relaxing under the expert hands of Rachael and Kathy who were both extremely pleasant and professional. We went out for dinner both nights and followed recommendations from the staff. The first night we ate at Butch's dry dock in Holland, MI - it took us 40 minutes to get there, including parking. Butch's was delicious. Our second night we ate at Salt of the Earth in Fennville, which is about 20 minutes away and this was possibly the best meal I've ever had. Breakfast in the Castle was fresh and delicious including orange juice, fresh fruit, and a pastry both days as well as a hot entree - leek and tomato frittata one day and cooked to order omelettes the other. With two kids and living seven hours away it'll be hard to get back to the Castle in the Country, but I plan to return as soon as I can. It was the perfect relaxing romantic get-away - just what I was looking for.

We are currently staying in the sir lancelot suite and just got back from a night hike from the pond looking at the beautiful stars. We both cannot get past the thought and beauty of this whole place. There's such charm, peace and quite, delightful faces, and wonderful suites. Not one detail has gone left unnoticed. Truly an expierence I'm glad I got to have. Can't not wait for a return visit.

We needed a relaxing weekend getaway, and that's what we got at Castle in the Country. I'm not sure what else we could have asked for. The "castle", which is really a circa 1906 Victorian mansion, as well as the castle keep (a newer building located on the property), are both meticulously maintained and feel like home. The property is picturesque and a joy to walk around - a pond with an overhead deck and screened gazebo, a lake with complimentary kayaks and paddleboat (and a screened porch), walking trails through the woods - all located away from towns and heavy traffic. The people who work here who we met all seemed very nice and were helpful when we had questions. The food was awesome - breakfast (strawberry cream cheese-stuffed French toast - yep) was served to us in the castle keep, with views overlooking the lake and rolling green hills beyond. It was a most memorable trip for my wife and I. Some have complained about the B&B's isolation, that it takes too long to get to surrounding towns. While it is true that some of the nearby towns with fine restaurants and shopping range from 20-45 minutes away, they are worth driving to because the drive is scenic. Fruit orchards, woodlands, and an overall rural backdrop highlight the trips you'll take to and from the B&B. If what you desire is a fast-paced environment with late night bars, clubs, and whatnot, this is probably not the place for you. If you are like my wife and I and seek a quiet, serene escape from city life, this place is paradise. I must insist that anyone staying here take advantage of the kayaks. The lake is quiet and still and if the conditions are just right and you're up early enough, you'll be able to paddle out in the middle of a lake cloaked in fog while the birds and turtles begin to wake up from their slumber. It is truly dreamlike. We stayed in the Golden Tower,one of the least expensive rooms on the 3rd floor. It was not equipped with a hot tub, nor did it offer spectacular views, but it was just right for us. Cozy and located inside the main turret of the home. We might consider trying one of the rooms with a hot tub during the autumn, but if we couldn't for some reason, we would be entirely happy being back in the Golden Tower. Stay at the Castle in the Country for the perfect weekend (or week-long) getaway. You'll thank me for it. P.S. - this is the 5th or 6th B&B we have stayed in over the last few years and is probably the best one we have stayed in.

Once upon a place far far away from all that's bothersome is Castle in the Country where complete relaxation can easily be found. In the Romeo and Juliet suite, we found a bed worthy of a princess with no pea beneath. There was, however, a persistent knocking behind the wall in the bathroom that woke us up throughout the first night (water pump)? Ah, but the jacuzzi soothed nonetheless. Chivalrous gents beware; when you pull down the toilet seat, the toilet cover comes with, my thumb still aches. A comfy robe and delicious coffee made the pain go away. Breakfast was delicious but not gourmet. The cost of the Castle Keep is, however, gourmet. Sitting in the gazebo by the propane fire eased that pain. Having a balcony in the Romeo and Juliet suite could have been cheesy; not so here where taste reigns. Innkeepers struck that difficult balance between attentiveness and unobtrusiveness. We especially appreciated how housekeeping mysteriously did their work while we were at breakfast, allowing a full day in the room if wanted with fresh linen nonetheless. And don't worry about getting dressed if it's breakfast in bed; breakfast is sensitively delivered outside your door. Outdoors, Miss Abby is a most hospitable cat. The castle achieves giving one the sense of being far far away.

Castle in the Country is the perfect place if you want a quiet weekend and don't want to leave the grounds. But if you want to explore and have a little more active of a weekend this isn't a good jumping off point. Pros: Great, helpful staff. Nice facilities. Decent breakfast. Large grounds with pond/swamp and lake with kayaks and paddle boats. Couples massage was great and worth $200. Picnic was nice but couldn't pick up until 1130. So we grabbed it later when we got back and had it as a late night snack. Cons. Nothing nearby. One restaurant down the road closed at 9pm. 45 min drive to Saugatauk, wineries etc Overpriced "packaged" deals. Get the A La Carte items. Locked boats on lake. Can only use them if you ask for a key during normal hours. (Apparently some people were given keys. We were not.) Bring bug spray, although I did see some available. Bottom line: This was my first time in Southwest Michigan and this was an ideal spot for us. Great place but if you're looking for a more active weekend I would stay in Saugatauk.

My bf and I were trying to find the perfect weekend getaway within a reasonable distance. We came across the website for Castle in the Country. We found their rooms had a more tasteful design layout - not resembling grandma's room like the other B&B's.

A beautiful old victorian house on a pretty piece of land. We stayed in the old house, and it was impeccably restored and decorated with beautiful antiques. Absolutely perfect for a quick weekend getaway.
