I love you Sonny's. I always have and I always will!!!! With my return trip home to Portland, I had a list of lands I absolutely needed to eat and drink at. I only had 4 days in town, so I knew I had to put my game face on to be able to eat all day everyday. Sonny's was a stop on my first day that was intended for just drinks. Their drinks are absolutely delicious. I love their drink menu. It is unique, it is big, it is delicious. I truly just wanted to come here to "rest my stomach" in between my restaurant tour, and to have a drink with egg whites in it. Well, I got my egg white drink- I usually go with a whisky or gin type of deliciousness. Today it was gin. And it was awesome. I wish I could remember what was in it, but of course, I don't. Anyways, all the cocktails I've ever tried here are amazing and really well made. They certainly know what they are doing. So, originally I just wanted a drink or two, to make room for my 8 restaurants I would eat at just this one day. Well, I looked at the food menu, and naturally had to eat. Have I mentioned I love food yet? Luckily, there were 4 of us, so splitting apps would still let my "stomach rest". Our server was so super awesome and I asked for her opinion on a few options, and with her help, we decided on the yam fries and the nachos. Holy wow. I am still thinking about those nachos one week later. They were literally some of the best nachos I have ever had. When I used to live in South Portland, I used to go on the "best nacho" hunt. I have no clue why I missed out on Sonny's, but I am quite sad I did. Of course I would only find out about these on a return trip home. ARGH! Anyways, the nachos were huge and made with corn chips, scallions, black beans, jalapenos, pico, sour cream, and a ton of cheese. They were so good, I want to fly back right now and eat 8 more orders. The yam fries were also excellent. We got them with the three dipping sauces, because condiments are the best thing in the whole world. They came with garlic aioli, poblano cream, and I assume a house made ketchup. The aioli and cream were the bomb. I think when the fries were gone we were literally eating them with a fork. I am not ashamed. Another friend came later and got the mussels. I tried a few and a few spoonfuls of broth. Also, super scrum. I've been here maybe 3 other times for food in the past, and always remember having delicious food. The atmosphere here is great too. I love the inside, the seating, the patio, and I recall hearing excellent live music here on a few different occasions in the past. Great playlist was on this time too. 5 stars for Sonny's, can't wait to return on my next trip home!!

My girlfriend and I stopped in to Sonny's yesterday and were delighted to see they have a happy hour menu! Happy hour is Monday-Friday from 4pm-6pm. We got two orders of the yam fries. Each one comes with your choice of a sauce (we got the garlic and the poblano). We love the yam fries! Probably the best thing on their food menu. My friend got the calamari app but I did not try this because I don't like seafood. The apps are $3 each (the other choices are cerviche and chips and salsa). Other happy hour options include $4 draft beer and $5 glasses of wine (merlot or pino grigio). My favorites are the happy hour cocktail deals for $6 each. I had the 99 problems which is a champagne mixed with ginger and lemon. It was good, maybe a little too sour. Outside of the happy hour menu- the drink menu at Sonny's is extensive and excellent. Most drinks are around $9-10 and come in a short glass. I've seen drinks here that I've never seen anywhere else. The reason for the 3 stars is that I don't really like the food menu. Nothing on it is really appetizing to me- plus it is pretty expensive for basic American food. I ordered the pulled pork enchiladas and I had a hard time eating it. It was so unexpectedly sour! I'm not sure if it was supposed to be that way but it was hard to eat. Definitely not the savory meal I expected. It was expensive and only came with like 2 bites of black beans. I do like the atmosphere of Sonny's. It is cozy and has a couple of couches to lounge on. The bar gets very busy sometimes though, on a weekend night it has taken me 20 minutes to get a drink at the bar. I will be back but it will probably only be for the happy or a cocktail before or after dinner somewhere else.

Good: Tri-Pork Cuban - tasty sandwich, nice balance of flavors. Ambiance was nice and relaxing in the main dining room. Average: lobster Parkside grilled Bagel - open faced sandwich where all contents slipped off with every bite, causing me to rebuild it, aioli was very tasty, but the lobster was bland, watery, and minimal claw pieces. Bad: biscuits - 1st round was raw on the inside, 2nd round was ice cold in the middle, but at least cooked, they were pretty thick and solid and not light or fluffy, more like a scone. Service was pretty bad. Our waitress was either extremely hungover or strung-out. She brought our appetizer after our meals, never refilled our water (that was all some of us were drinking), didn't check on our food until 10 minutes after being dropped off (the restaurant was not busy), and gave us our check without even asking us if we wanted anything else. We did. We wanted anything else.

I love this place because it's a really good stand-by. Made plans to eat at a killer new restaurant but their hours are confusing? Go to Sonny's. Couldn't find the food truck/cart you've heard great things about? Go to Sonny's. You're with a mix of friends who can't decide what to eat and where. Go to Sonny's. Sonny's is in a central location and has a very palate pleaseing menu. I've always ordered the poblano burger with a side of yam fries. The yam fries here are to die for! They are breaded in a cornmeal-like batter an then fried for that extra crisp. They come with a delicious aioli dipping sauce. During happy hour they come as an appetizer for $3. Highly recommended. So we finally stopped in for brunch! And I was super disappointed *womp womp wompppp* - We stood by the empty host stand for about five minutes before someone eventually greeted us, several waitress rushed by several times but no one actually came over. - We managed to snag an outside spot which was awesome, but our table was super wobbly. I asked the waitress if we could have a piece of wood to stabilize it, instead she just lifted it up *while our water glasses were on the there* and moved it which resulted in my glass falling over and spilling on me. - She claimed "at least it's refreshing" and giggled about it. When she came back to take our order, instead of bringing me some napkins to sop up the water she pounded her fist against the metal grate table so the rest of the water kinda fell off. I ended up using a newspaper someone left behind to clean myself off. - Food was OK, I ordered the ojos grandes and the beans were burned and stuck to the sides of the skillet, otherwise the rest of the dish was good. We usually get the yam fries as an app, normally it's a huge amount which is why we order them but this time it was about half the portion for the same price. $5 mimosas were decent, can't beat $5. Not cool, Sonny's.

We were "lobstered" out and wanted something different and we ended up here. The hostess station was empty and we waited a couple minutes. We were seated immediately once the hostess arrived. The restaurant is dark and mostly lit by candles on the tables. They have outdoor seating on the cobbled park. We were seated in the corner by the window with the view of Market St and the park. Our server was peppy! Food came out pretty fast! We started with the Arugula Salad. It was superb! The arugula leaves were huge, twice the size of what I am used to seeing. It was fresh, crunchy and peppery. Toasted almond slivers add another layer of flavor and texture. There was sweet cubed mango and white cheese. The cheese was the best I've had, the firm consistency of feta and the tang of goat. We thought it was goat and asked our server who supplies the cheese. She stated it is local, Fuzzy Udder. I looked it up online in hopes of visiting the business. Turns out it is made out of someone's home/farm in Whitefield, ME. I don't even remember if the salad had any dressing, it was not needed. Our mains were the Johnny Tri-Pork Cuban and House Nachos with Pulled Pork. The cuban was delicious! Each type of pork stood on their own as you take a bite. The nachos were loaded but they were heavy handed on the jalapeÃ±os. Still good! With so many dining options on Exchange Street alone, Sonny's is a choice that will not disappoint.

Loved Sonny's! I was visiting Portland over the weekend with a few girlfriends so we decided to check out Sonny's for brunch on Sunday morning. Everyone was extremely satisfied with their meals. I had the huevos rancheros with a side of home fries- delicious! My friends all tried something different on the brunch menu, and I did not hear any complaints about their meals. They also have a wide range of brunch cocktails - all of which were very good. I have been trying to force myself to like bloody mary's - and I can officially say that Sonny's had the first one that I have ever enjoyed. I also have to mention that I was obsessed with the music. They played a nice mix of classic rock - I heard multiple Beatles & Led Zeppelin songs throughout our meal. Service was also prompt & very nice!

I was really surprised by this place. It's a simple restaurant with the typical menu of a american restaurant but the food was presented elegantly and it tasted just as good. The pulled pork enchiladas were very tasty paired with sweet potato fries and an avocado sour cream dip that I loved. We went there primarily for drinks and they did not disappoint! We had a kettle one cosmo and then I had a beverage with anise in it which was delicious! Definitely will be coming back soon!!!!

For a better review that the one you're about to read, go to Tony W.'s review. It's spot on. Indeed, I have to say that overall, Sonny's was disappointing. The food was rather bland and overpriced (although presented nicely) and the service was sub-par. Our bartender was not only slow and forgetful, but she seemed completely uninterested in serving us - as if every small request (like ordering food) was an inconvenience. The nachos, fried avocado and plantains were more home cook preparations than restaurant quality in my opinion. The mussels were perfectly fine but there isn't much you can do to ruin mussels steamed in white wine, garlic and shallots. Despite the negatives, there are still some highlights at Sonny's including their incredible cocktail menu. I absolutely loved my 99 Problems - a mix of Prosecco, Canton ginger and lemon. My friend had a really nice bourbon -y, whiskey-ish mulled cider served in a coffee cup with some cinnamon on top that he enjoyed enough to order twice. The bar area at Sonny's is quite nice and the dim lighting and large windows out onto Exchange Street offer a lovely setting but venture out into the other dining areas and you'll find an eclectic mix of Edwardian couches and velvet curtains. I just can't figure out what Sonny's is going for... Underground Madrid? Final recommendation: come for a cocktail and dine elsewhere.

Liked the place from the minute we walked in. Looks much like a bar would pre-prohibition with exposed brick and nice furnishings. Open kitchen - always a big plus. Brunch prices and menu variety were solid. Had a bloody mary, which disappointed as it was too bitter and salty - just unbalanced, along with huevos rancheros, which were just fine. Yam fries with ancho cream were the highlight of the day. Service was spotty.

We went here on our first date. The waiter was awkward, which helped set the mood for the budding awkward relationship. He approached us and was all like "What's up, you thirsty?" We were a bit confused on whether he actually worked there or was just a concerned patron. For drinks we ordered the Pinky Tuscadero and a Dark and Stormy. They were both delights. For food we got burgers and they were not a great choice for a first date. They left some to be desired. There was bacon on mine. So you can't really go wrong with bacon. Still, that waiter. He was a bit weird.

I really like the space. It's dark and intimate with a great dining area and bar. Came for dinner and stayed for drinks after. It has lots of seating and cool couches and lounge areas. I will definitely want to come back here a lot for drinks. They're cocktail list is extensive and unique. It's well priced. For dinner, my friend and I shared mussels in a coconut and pumpkin broth which was amazing. I had a spaghetti squash risotto that I also really liked.

Sonny's!!!! Where to begin...the drinks? The Oysters? The service? The Nachos? 110% awesome on all parts for my recent visit (ok, 3 visits in just over a day) to Sonny's. I was told it was the place to go for brunch but we didn't make it for that time of day but we did go for some bites in the afternoon/evening hours. Visit 1....welcome to Sonny's! We sat at the bar (of course) and was automatically in love with the atmosphere of the place. The gorgeous carafes of house infused liqueurs lining the window sill and the chatty staff made my day! It was a sunny hot Saturday and we (a party of 4) NEEDED some oysters. We got the oysters...the best oysters. And let me tell you, they WERE the BEST oysters! Beer was cold and hit the spot which was what it was intended to do! Visit one ended, we were pleased, and knew we would be back... Visit 2...now we're talking! Started with some cold beer...a bud light, nothing extraordinary but was tastier than water. Then had a Shed brown ale. That was very very good. We didn't have any bites this visit but chatted with the bartender about surrounding area and what other good spots were that we could venture to. We left, ventured, but not very far...fast forward one hour or so. Visit 3...epic. Have you ever had nachos? Like nachos that are so good that you never want the plate to be empty because you might get sad? Sonny's has those nachos. I was feeling quite festive after already enjoying two brews just an hour or so prior so I indulged in a mixed drink!!! I thought I should take it easy and order a "mock tale", so I chatted with the bartender to see what I might like...a minute or so later I decided I wanted a full strength (including the alcohol) piÃ±a colada!! B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. So much effort was put into this drink and it was so obvious that the bartender took pride in his work. There was even a pretty little paper umbrella with 4 little cherries in it with both a lemon and lime wedge on it. It may have set the bar for me when it comes to piÃ±a coladas! Alas it was time to end our adventure at Sonny's but I know we will be back and we will meet again! Thank you!! Oh!!! Side note!!! I saw some pepperchini peppers being put away in the fridge and asked to have one to nibble on with my beer and got two! That right there is service.

Whether you're looking for a spot for dinner, brunch or cocktails at the bar, many locals will agree that Sonny's in Downtown Portland, ME is a great place to go. Booth seating to the left, the bar on the right, and....ta-da! Open kitchen in the back, my favorite. The vibe is laid back, but still has a bit of a trendy, chic aesthetic. For a drink, I ordered their Spicy Cucumber Margarita (house infused chile tequila, fresh cucumber, fresh lime, simple syrup). I liked this drink, but, I will say, I like my spicy drinks spicy, and, I found this one a little on the mild side. Overall though, it was tasty, just not spicy. Then, I ordered the Grilled Fairy Tale Eggplant (local heirloom and cherry tomatoes, house made mozzarella, israeli couscous, saffron tomato sauce). I really enjoyed this dish. The eggplant and tomatoes were fresh, and the saffron tomato sauce was really nice too, letting the natural flavors take the main stage and not adding in lots of extra salt or anything to take away from that. I especially liked the thick grained couscous pearls, it was tender and had almost a creamy quality to it.

A friend of mine and I came here a few weeks ago for drinks and the possibility of dinner. We walked in on a Wednesday night and were able to grab two seats at the bar. The bar area at Sonny's is a cozy, darkly lit space with beautiful exposed brick walls, hanging lantern light fixtures and high arched windows overlooking Exchange Street. I believe this could possibly be a repurposed bank, because there's a very strange crawl space with a thick metal door above the bar. All in all, quite beautiful. The drink list is certainly the highlight. I'm instantly drawn to any bourbon/whisky cocktail, and they offered a warm mulled cider cocktail made with a bourbon infused in-house with deliciousness (dates? cherries?) that hit the spot on a cold evening. Twice. Service is disappointingly bad/ambivalent, however. It took about 5 -7 minutes for the bartenders to bring over a drink list. And then the bartender forgot about my second drink. Seriously, you have one job! What happens if a bus driver doesn't drive the bus? S/he gets replaced. We took a glance at the menu, but nothing really popped out. Plus, holy expensive! This is a place that seems to try absurdly hard to be an upscale dining experience through inflated prices: $21 for a roasted vegetables plate? $14 for a Cuban? $16 for enchiladas? These prices would be fine if I didn't know of at least a few places in Portland that already offer these options for at least 25% less than Sonny's. We decided on splitting four appetizers: panko fried avocado, mussels, nachos, and plantains. The nachos and mussels were good, the fried plaintains were ok, and the avocado was boring. A plus is that they all came out remarkably quick - almost faster than the time it took for us to get the drink menus after we took our seats! To sum up: come for the excellent cocktails (temper your expectations when it comes to the service) and find dinner elsewhere.

Based purely on the exceptionally attentive service of our server and the amazingly lovely Hot Mama drink that satisfied my desire for something that tasted wonderful and had a little kick, this place is great. If I lived in Portland, it would be one of my favorites. Plus, although the drinks are a little pricey (like everything in this "eat, drink, live local / fair trade / natural / organic town), the food isn't too overpriced (though I didn't eat it and so don't know quantity or quality). Bottom line: Hot Mama.

The interior is really funky and old as it used to be an bank. Great cocktail menu with a lot of different flavors and they also flavor a lot of their own alcohol. Didn't get a look at the food, but people were saying that have a good brunch. Would love to come back here again.

Sonny's is a go to place for my friends and I. The food has yet to disappoint and the drink selection is always fun -- both the cocktails and beer selection. It's almost always hopping and its convenient to get reservations through yelp ha ha. So, I wasn't sure how many stars to give Sonny's. The bar is a solid 5 stars! I have always had excellent service, even when they are busy. Very professional bartender who does not ignore you or give any kind of obvious annoyance at your desire to try a different mixed drink every time....which are all delicious. Try the 99 problems. Champagne, ginger, lemon, mmmmm. I cannot find their cocktail menu online, but another drink that stood out was made with whiskey and egg whites. The egg whites make the drink foamy... although it sounds creepy, it's good. Deer heads on the wall, almost gothic vibe, open layout, long bar, antique tile floor, big windows, all add to a positive drinking experience. That being said, I have never liked the menu or the food here. I have never had good service in the restaurant. Although not part of this party, I was told that during a family brunch (with reservations) food came out slow and cold, and the overall experience was a disaster. If you are a 30-something looking for someplace to go in Old Port on a Saturday night a little more exciting than a sports bar, but not as crazy or trashy as Oaisis or Pearl lounge (whatever its called)... then Sonny's is a good go-to spot.

Sonny's was a last minute decision (as we are both very indecisive people), as was going out to eat. We've always enjoyed our food there, but never super eager to go back... Unfortunately (I hate that word!), this time was about the same. We were sat in the back room, which was very dimly lit and tiny tea lights flickering on the tables. I did know the waiter from previous times, but it was so dark he didn't even recognize me... Anyway, the menu is usually small, but always has something for someone. We started with the mussels (no way!); steamed in a garlic, butter, white wine and chive broth (so salty!). The portion size was perfect. We each had about 8 or so. They were a bit larger than I enjoy, so I pawned off the last few to him. I ordered the beet, sunflower seeds, goat cheese and "leafy greens" salad, which was great. The beats were chopped up and sat below the lettuce, which was bizarre, but a very delicious plate. He ordered the bacon and cheddar wrapped meatloaf sandwich on a biscuit bun. There's not much that disappoints him, very easy to please, but he did say that it was a very large, delicious "burger". I had a glass of champagne which was terrible and had zero fizz and he had an Allagash, a typical light, belgian beer. Instead of dessert, which we pass on 99% of the time, he had another beer and I opted for a fresh squeezed grey hound. Delicious. We put down a gift card and a credit card to pay for the remaining amount. He came back and said that the gift card declined twice so he just ran the entire amount on the credit card. When we got home, we tried to look for any discrepancies with the GC online.... FUNNY... the gift card was run for the total amount, along with our credit card. Grrrrrr... now we have to dispute the charge. Seems to be more of an annoyance than anything. OVERALL, a decent meal. It always seems to be the etiquette of a meal that gets to me.

Things I love about Sonnys: pretty much everything except the bartenders. This is my go-to spot when I'm meeting friends for a drink and everyone says "I don't care, where do you want to go?" I always say Sonny's. Same thing when we are trying to decide where to go for brunch. I always order the sausage and biscuits. I will never cheat on my gravy biscuits, but I will always steal bites from everyone else at the table. Bartenders often seem to cool to serve you in a timely fashion or with any sort of affection, but it is weirdly part of the allure. I feel so lucky when I walk in and the couches are free, it's like my friends and I are famous.

I have mixed feelings about Sonny's. I should say that I've only been twice, so more visits may be in order to get a better feel for consistency. I went once for drinks and appetizers, and once for brunch. The drinks were awesome. Creative and tasty, without crossing over into pretentious territory. Fantastic selection. Appetizers were solid. The plantains are great, as others have mentioned. And service was good. Brunch, however, wasn't great. The menu looked really good, but all of our dishes came out over-cooked and a bit bland. It may have been an off-day or something, but I won't try brunch again. I was just too disappointed. Go for drinks, and definitely try the chile infused tequila. So good; very spicy!

Sunday is, it seems, B-Team Day. Bartender was nice enough, but when she lifted and tilted my wine glass to transfer the contents, I was a little put off. T'aint a beer, love. Waitress was possibly sneaking off to take hits during her three visits to the table in our hour-long sitting. Food was okay. Started with the nachos, followed by the beef brisket enchilada, which was way too spicy for my Sally palate. Likely won't return because i) I don't venture into Portland enough and ii) I stick to the tried and trusted, unless we're with our townie friends.

I eat at Sonny's because I know exactly what I want when I go there. It's one of those places that keeps me coming back because I've memorized the best stuff on their menu; it's very rare that I go to Sonny's in anticipation of what's on special. Whether I'm going out for dinner, brunch, or Saturday night cocktails, Sonny's never disappoints. I will often crave a chile relleno, and I won't go anywhere else to get my fix. The ceviche is always fresh and delicious. If you want your Cuban with a variety of delicious cuts of pig, Sonny's is the spot. I have never tried the burger or the daily empanada, but that's because I'm completely content with what I have tried. I can assure you that you will quickly and easily be hooked on Sonny's. For brunch, the huevos rancheros and arepas and eggs are where it's at. Pork belly. The end. And we haven't even begun discussing cocktails. This is one of Portland's greatest cocktail spots, and I stand by that. Infusions, fresh fruit and herbs, and good liquor make Sonny's cocktails stand-out among much competition. They muddle jalapenos and strawberries into their tequila, and add liqueurs to their champagne. Yum. Sometimes, the service at Sonny's is slow. It depends on the day, the meal, and the server/bartender. It's best to go in anticipating this detail. I will go to Sonny's just because there isn't anywhere else to go at a given time. It's just Sonny's. It's good. It's a Portland staple. Sonny's makes me happy. Additionally, so do Local 188 and Salvage BBQ, Sonny's' sister restaurants. More on them later.

Since I have not had their food this review is about the place in general. Great cocktail list, nice local list of beers and a great place to hang out with friends and actually have a nice conversation and can hear each other. Love the old rustic look of the bank building. My friend had a couple old fashions and I had a few Banded Horn Pilsner brew out of Biddeford Maine! Bartender was friendly and very attentive with a smile every time she approaches you to ask if you need anything..located right in the heart of Portland on exchange street it gives you a lot of options to go afterwards. I would definitely like to try their food next time!

I had a coupon for 20% off lunch at Sonny's. I went yesterday on a frigid day, knowing the bar would be warm and sunny. I sat at the bar and I wasn't disappointed - it was exactly the bright warmth the day called for. The bartender, Ben, was awesome. Although I only had a tap beer, I was impressed with the cocktail list and will try something from it next time I'm there in the evening. He spoke knowledgeably and honestly about the menu and was super friendly to this solo diner. Although they had few vegetarian options, I chose a salad of spinach, butternut squash, almonds, dried cranberries, pickled onions and blue cheese. What a disappointment. The salad was heavily overdressed, the squash was undercooked and crunchy (?!) and, although I love cheese, there was way too much, and I ended up putting half of it to the side. This was my third and final meal at Sonny's. I've been twice before, and the food has disappointed every time. Five stars for service, five stars for sunny ambiance, five stars for beer selection, one star for food. I'll go back for drinks but won't eat again.,

What a fantastic find. Excellent New American cuisine, a couple good craft brews on tap, a creative and cool-looking cocktail list (which we did not try, but totally appreciate), and great service from both the server and bartender. Pretty hip young professional-looking crowd and great ambiance. I'll definitely be visiting Portland again and this will be my first (and possibly last, again) stop.

I don't understand why this restaurant doesn't have 4 stars? I have been there 3 times and every time it was wonderful. My favorite is still the Chile Relleno, the lobster and mac was very good but even better as it cooled off a little. The lobster mac and cheese is a little on the saucy side not like more traditional thick mac and cheese. The flavor was wonderful and had a fair amount of lobster which is usually a little light at most restaurants. Their daily soups and house salad are simple but pack tons of flavor!

Great bar scene & vibe, cozy booths for dining in and comfort food on the menu make this one of my go to spots in the winter. Their flavors are rich & fresh and I love that their menu takes classics and adds a twist. Service is always spot on here, whether you are in the dining room or at the bar and it's located right in the old port which is perfect for wandering around before or after dinner. I would suggest a reservation on weekends, and if you are wanting to get a good seat in the bar arrive early and enjoy some happy hour!

I went to Sonny's with a large party, I came hungry and left very happy. For an appetizer I ordered the wings in their hot flavor. To my surprise, these were large, full-sized chicken wings! The sauce they were smothered in was fiery as heck, with great flavor. The only flaw here was that I found myself reaching for the blue cheese sauce, but it wasn't there. In this wing-lover's opinion, they need to add a healthy helping of dipping sauce to this dish. For an entree I had the burger. The burger itself was excellent, but the highlight of the meal was actually the fries! These fries were coated in some sort of mysterious crispy deliciousness. Heavenly. I've heard a lot about Sonny's, both good and bad, but my particular experience there falls squarely in the "good" category. I'm a fan.

I love Sonnys. Ive eaten here at least thirty times over the past couple years and have always had a good experience. My friend and I have a tradition where we go together and order a ton of different dishes to split so we get to try everything. A couple of my favorites have been the warm smashed beets and goat cheese salad, the plantains, the Caesar salad (with white anchovies!), salt cod fritters, grilled hummus melt, and a variety of different risottos. The drinks are also great. My favorites include the Chickadee, the Strawberry Margarita, 99 Problems, and the Tommy Spark. Definitely a must visit while in Portland.

I've gone to Sonny's for drinks more times than I can count, but I finally bit the bullet and ordered an appetizer a couple weeks ago. The drinks and atmosphere still remain my reasons for going here, so I'm going to preface the review with that, but the food definitely left me wanting more.. literally. Nothing was standing out to me on the food menu so I piggy-backed a friend's order and got the panko crusted avocado to go with my hard cider (usually very yummy there and the cider definitely was). The dish was good, but $8 for half an avocado and some type of pickled slaw is a little outrageous. I know the restaurant is trying to make some money here but for $8 maybe they should consider serving a whole avocado. Either way, I wasn't extremely hungry so at the time I was totally cool with it.. my wallet was just a little sad though. During the summer months I'll usually order a Sangria at the bar and their drinks specials are typically tasty, but if you're looking for cheap food or drink Sonny's probably isn't the spot for you. Their infused liquors are fantastic and you can choose flavor combinations, for anyone who's feeling a little adventurous. The atmosphere and the drinks will definitely get my stamp of approval but the food (a main staple for a restaurant) has left me wanting more. Maybe I'll get the burger next time if I'm feeling extra carnivorous, and possibly add that extra star to my review but for now a solid 3 stars will have to do.

Met for drinks in the front booth - waiter was attentive and sweet, informative and prompt. I would hope so since it was pretty quiet for St. Paddy's but it was also Tuesday nite. We didn't go for a raucous time, we went for nice drinks and conversation and that's exactly what we got. I love the atmosphere in there. I don't why it took me so long to go there (apparently the rest of my office goes there regularly for 'happy hour') but I liked the wine cellar coziness of it in there. Long bar, tables, couches, window space, etc. All good. My guests seemed pretty happy with their drinks (by the time I got there they were on to coffee & Jameson's), I had the Cucumber Gimlet and the County Cork. The Cuke Gimlet was great - almost like a mild cuke slushie rather than when many places just wave the cucumber over the gin and slap the slice on the rim - this was 'dirty' with lime - refreshing and yummy. The County Cork was the special of the eve and was a whiskey sour with a zin float - perfect, not too sour with that bit of sweet to get through. Seeing as Local 188 is one of my favorite places to get a fancy drink, I shouldn't be surprised to get the same quality and vibe here. I wish I would have had some nibbles - they look good, but I know that I will definitely be back.

Great place for drinks and also a great place for food. As for the drinks, surprisingly I haven't been too fond of their tequila cocktails, but their other liquor items have been awesome. The Wally Hardbanger with bourbon, mint and lemon is always a good one to start off with - then i'll branch off with el gincho or the pinky tuscadero. The service has always been pretty good. Waiters and waitresses are fairly attentive. As for the food, it definitely has a latin undertone and I've never been disappointed. I usually will end up getting whatever is their special. Something that is always great to get to share with the table is the yam fries - trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Best breakfast that I have had in 2013. I showed up hungry, my dining partner showed up hungover. Sonny's was able to satisfy us both. He got a bloody mary that apparently saved his life, along with an egg dish that he did not share ;) I got black beans, corn cake, red onion slaw, two eggs sunny side up and pork belly. Oh my God, it was the best pork belly I have ever had. We sat outside on the patio, which was right in downtown Portland, so it seemed like a great spot for locals and tourists alike. Johnna M. rolled in later and had no problem getting a mimosa. The decor inside is awesome. The service is fast and friendly. Really just an all around great spot for a meal.

Here is the thing. The female bartenders, and one of the guys (jasper?) kick. assssssss. amazing, personable knowledgable. fast. recently tho i think a new hire is there, a guy with a beard who says nothing but rolls his eyes whenever people order anything but a mixed drink. like beer or soda or whatever aren't in his job description. he froze out my friends simple soda water and lime for a good ten minutes, then shoved it at her and demanded she settle up now. we had ordered food. we were very confused. so we settled up, canceled our food, and left. you're here to make people happy whether that means cocktails or not? sorry but no tip for you, man, you lost our business. seriously a bit upset.

We stopped in at this joint on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at a few minutes past 7 p.m., hoping to get a drink before the Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt show at the Merrill, which started at 8. It was not to be. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the service at Sonny's sucks. We weren't just ignored. We were rebuffed. The bartender actually looked us over and evidently decided he wasn't going to serve our kind. He headed to the other end of the bar, where he spent his time chatting with others who were somehow more to his liking. We stood there for about 20 minutes, chatting with some acquaintances who also happened to be there, before silently telling him to go fuck himself and heading over to Merrill, where we contented ourselves with a few overpriced glasses of shitty red before the show. First time, last time for Sonny's. Osmosis, amoeba. Catch ya on the flippyfloppy.

I visited Sonny's for the first time in August 2012 and had an amazing experience. I'm a huge fan of Local 188, so knowing that the same dude (dudes?) are behind Sonny's helped. My friend and I had a pretty huge brunch, sampling several of the dishes on the menu, and everything was amazing. Incredible strawberry pancakes, delicious eggs, insanely awesome bacon, and fresh-squeezed juice. The atmosphere inside is awesome, they have outdoor seating with great people-watching, and the wait staff was amazing. YES!

I only went for brunch, so I don't think I can give it five stars just yet, but the brunch was amazing. The options had great variety, from huevos rancheros to biscuits and gravy (with a twist!). The morning cocktails are where it's at though. The bloody mary's are good and spicy, and Sonny's takes on mimosas are amazing. From guava to grapefruit, they add a little more to your mimosa to make it something special. Plus they're very reasonably priced! Service was great, our waitress waited to bring us fresh brewed coffee and happy accommodated our larger group (we had 8 people). I'll definitely be heading back the next time in Portland to try another meal there!

We were so happy to stumble upon Sonnys! We were recommended to go here or the Grill from the Hotel we were staying at. We chose Sonnys because it looked a little more lively, more our style. All of the food was so fresh and full of flavor! We had the Beef Tacos, Daily Ceviche, Eggplant Dish & another meat dish that my boyfriend ordered. Very fun atmosphere and the service was great! We will be back for sure! Very similar to "Street 360" in Portsmouth, NH.

Gotta try the infused liquors !! They make an amazing Mojito and I have had brunch here about 50 times and still the Biscuits and Gravy is what I order every time, it's that good !! Staff is decent, they never seem too excited about life, but they are never rude, plus there is a waiter/host that works there that has the best style in the Old Port !! Plus, if you are a Football fan (Soccer) and the owner is around, you get the treat of seeing some out of network European games !! Great place with an awesome side patio in the park !!

Both occasions we were ignored and treated as if the "servers" were too cool to help us. We won't be coming back because of the poor service. I really like it here! Definitely a cool place to hang out with pals and drink away the afternoon - they have a patio too. I've been here on several occasions and have enjoyed myself each time. On the most recent occasion, we stopped in on Cinco de Mayo to watch the Kentucky Derby because they were having a special - Mint Juleps and Kentucky Mules for $6. I had two Kentucky Mules (ginger beer and bourbon) and one Strawberry Hot Pepper Margarita (house chili infused tequila with fresh strawberries, simple syrup & a sugared rim - yum!). They have a very fun cocktail menu (I'll be back to sample more) and prices are reasonable ($8). Once my thirst was slaked, I turned my attention to the food menu. We started with a slew of appetizers: a ceviche trio (hake marinated in lime, shrimp in a mint julep inspired marinade, and scallops in a bloody mary inspired marinade), fried plantains, salt cod drop fritters, and Maine shrimp in garlic. My dad also had the soup of the day, which was a Manhattan clam chowder and was quite tasty. Everything I tried was delicious (I didn't sample the scallops - allergies), but I particularly enjoyed the hake and the plantains. The only minor disappointment was the cod fritters because there were only four of them (five of us); I could have eaten four on my own (and we pretty much licked the rammekin of relish clean)! If you get them to share, definitely get two or more orders. The feeding frenzy continued after a 2 minute interlude (I'll Have Another!) with braised pork belly served with seared queso blanco cheese and a fried farm egg (three of my favorite things on one plate!). To make it a lil more healthy I also ordered a salad with goat cheese, clementines, pine nuts and local mixed greens with a delicious house dressing. My brother and the boyfriend both got cuban sandwiches, which I am not a fan of, but they reported them to be quite tasty (though I thought it strange that they weren't pressed - oh well!). I think my mom got the poblano burger (the fries were tasty) and maybe my dad got the enchilada? Things started to get a bit hazy, but I believe that the plates were clean all around. Other awesome things: the space is really cool (there's a vault!), there are couches in the bar area (love couches in bars!), aaand they have Busch and Anchorsteam on tap.

These 3 stars are for brunch and the creative drink selection at night. I've heard the food is fair for lunch and dinner, but I've never tried it. If you go, the mimosas are delicious and the bagel topped with lobster is an absolute MUST. It is a menu item you won't find anywhere else. The homemade poblano cream cheese works perfectly with Maine's favorite crustacean. The drink menu at night has plenty of creative concoctions, but service is slow. Be prepared for big crowds if you choose to go to Sonny's for drinks.

This location is one that we stumbled upon after going to the movies at the Nickelodeon theater (On 5 dollar movie night) and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. When we first walked in, I thought we were a little underdressed wearing shorts, flip flops and my Boston Red Sox hat flipped around backwards but the scene was relaxed and very hip. I think that this place would fit anyone in. It has a slightly latin feel to the decor with giant containers behind the bar with concoctions like Strawberry Basil, Chile tequilla and cucumber basil vodka on the ready. The mojitos were flying around the place like a scene from Harry Potter going from hand to hand being prepared by a bar staff that were covered in tattoos but good at what they did. The only reason why I did not give the place a 4 or 5 star rating here was simply because the bar staff was very much in their own world (And I understand that it is busy but give us some attention ... ) and didn't pay much attention to or converse with us. The other reason no 4 or 5 is because I did not get a chance to eat anything because the kitchen was closed (11:15pm). The beer selections were good with some allagash, some dogfish and other types of lagers and IPAs and not your run of the mill Buds and Bud Lights. The music was loud playing an assortment of 80's tunes rocking out some Duran Duran and Lionel Richie and eventhrowing in some Depeche Mode and the vibe was popping with every genre of people there from your hipsters to your artsy crowd. Enjoyed the short time that I spent in this establishment (as agreed from my two compadres that meandered out with me) and will definitely go back to try some of the food there another day ... maybe on the patio!! The only other drawback here is the prices .. they are comparable to the Portland scene but puts a gouge on your wallet nontheless .. our tab was 23 dollars for three beers.

Sonny's is average. The food: overpriced and mediocre, though fresh. We had two salads, two drinks and an appetizer and it cost $65 for LUNCH. YONKS. Moreover, my taco salad had nearly no lettuce and very few beans, tomatoes or flavor. The atmosphere: big old building that's a lovely dining space. Another BUT - we were desperately hungry and Sonny's drew us in with outdoor tables, but by the time they got around to seating us, the three outdoor tables with umbrellas were taken and they didn't have shade to cover their remaining tables. Bummer, and indoors we went. Service: unremarkable. Not friendly or helpful, but not rude either. Kind of like ordering from the waiter robots of the future. If you're in Portland on vacation, don't waste a meal there. There's so much good food to eat, and we only ended up here because of poor planning. Waaah!

As a whole I really like this place even though I have somewhat mixed feelings. It's replaced Havana South as the 10 pm - midnight weekend hangout spot. As a lounge, it isn't nearly as good as Havana. It gets crowded very fast and there's no room to lean on the bar or at any tables. The drinks are better though. They have a huge, creative drink menu and several amazing infused vodkas. The prices are on the higher side, and the service is hit or miss. I've had good bartenders/waitresses and terrible ones. Non-weekends are more of a hipster crowd, but weekends bring out everyone. The food is very underrated. I've eaten here many times, and consider it one of my go-to spots in Portland. The prices are surprisingly reasonable. You can get a (delicious) burger or Cuban for about $12. Most of the menu is under $20. There's always two soups on special. One usually sounds terrible and the other perfect. Along with a decent selection of wine by the glass and local beers, I'd highly recommend this for moderate priced food and a couple of drinks.

The building is really cool and has tons of character, as does the waitstaff. The food was pretty good (we were here for brunch) and I would definitely come back to try something else, but the service was so frustrating. I ordered coffee and my friend ordered water and she awkwardly asked my friend if she wanted cream and sugar? And then brought me a half-full cup of coffee and I never got the chance to ask for more because she never even came back. We were excited for warm grilled cornbread and asked for butter but never got it and were ignored for 30 minutes until someone else came to close out our check while the spacey server helped another table. And what is with the egg carton foam pad things under the tables?

The place can get a little overrun, which can lead to slower service, but don't let that stop you from going; it is definitely worth the wait. Sonny's has become a Portland staple. Brunch is more often than not totally accessible on the weekends. The Huevos Rancheros and bloodys are important after any energetic Friday evening. The hanger steak was cooked precisely to temperature but was a little bland. The flan was perfect. Our server was very good. I have been to Sonny's only twice and in those visits witnessed some dramatic inconsistencies in service and quality. If I was going to rate Sonny's based on my first experience, they would have won all five gold stars. I first stopped by on a rainy afternoon before a show at the State. After settling into the collection of comfy couches (which have since been reduced), we ordered tea and desserts. For a restaurant/bar, they had a really special selection of locally grown, full leaf teas. Dessert was delicious: goat cheese tarte with almond crust & cherries and a super chocolaty mousse concoction. After dessert, more friends met us and we ended up getting drinks. The drinks were incredible- I was drooling just looking at the menu, so many house-infused liquors! Tried the Haycito, which delivered a subtle spice that was promised on the menu. My return brunch trip did not come close to the same experience. It felt like another restaurant just stole the Sonny's sign and set up shop. Service was s l o w, like waiting 30-40 minutes for pancakes on an empty Saturday afternoon kind of slow. I got the arepas and the dish was Sahara dry. On the bright side: drinks were still good and the empanada of the day was out of control good. I still want to give Sonny's another chance because of the great first impression they made. Hopefully they were having a bad day. I mean, we all have them now and again.

This place was recommend to us by someone who we met at Lobster festival in rockland maine. It is a really nice place that caters very well to people with food allergies. The waitress told me that they try to make almost everything gluten free and were able to accommodate my gluten and dairy allergy. I had the eggplant salad special (without mozarella cheese) and the meatballs. My boyfriend thought majority of the menu sounded unappealing and settled on a cuban sandwich and the plantains. We were both in agreement that our food was absolutely DELICIOUS! The eggplant salad was a warm salad with 2 thick eggplant rounds, cucumbers, red tomatoes, and yellow tomatoes. The presentation was beautiful and the salad with the basil vinaigrette was absolutely amazing. The meatballs were very tasty and had a hint of spicyness. The plantains were hands down the best that I have every had. They were sweet and perfectly caramelized. They were served with a sour cream sauce that I couldn't try but my boyfriend said it was a perfect pairing. Overall, I highly recommend this place.

Sonny's on Exchange is a unique little spot. What once was a bank, now is a hipster, cubano, meso-american eatery... From the cock on the sign to the tattoos on the staff, there's no limit to how hip this place is. And dammit, it's good. I'll be honest... this wasn't my first time eating at Sonny's. However, it was my first time eating dinner, so it was a new, somewhat unbiased experience. Starting off: Yam fries w/ poblano cream. Bad-flippin-ass. I love these frikkin fries. Yam is badass to begin with, but cut them into fries and stick them in a fryer w/ whatever other magic then endow them with, topped with some sea salt, and a poblano-enriched sour cream? Eff. Now to the main's: My order? Beef brisket enchilada w/ mole roja, cheddar, rice, and beans. I'm just gonna let that echo a while... Ready? Ok. This thing was delicious. No, it was more than delicious. It was delectable. Maybe it's my carnivorous obsession with anything that involves meat that takes a long time to cook in it's own juices, but this was so satisfying that I have to be completely over the top in this review. It was perfectly cooked, seasoned, and moist. The whole thing just felt put together and cohesive. Extra points for the presentation as well. The portion size was excessive, not in a bad way, but in a way that allowed me to enjoy this for lunch the next day. Unfortunately, this is where the review takes a turn for the worse, two-fold. 1. My girlfriend's order, the chickpea and potato enchilada, was just, not really that great. Fairly dry, with the potatoes not really cooked all the way... it just fell flat. Especially since my order, which exists in the same genus as this herbivore enchilada, was so great... What happened? I blame the lack of meat, but I'm sure scientists will find that there was more to it than that. Additionally, more points are lost because my girlfriend kept stealing bites of my dinner since hers was so sub-par. Sad times. 2. The service. It wasn't awful, per se, everyone was really friendly and nice, but, hard to communicate with at times and kept disappearing. Not to mention, through the course of the meal we had 3 different waitresses, so I wasn't even really sure who to ask for things. Not really such a bad thing, but if I have to think about trying to find a waitress while I'm eating, it's kind of a buzzkill. I'm gonna sidetrack into the reasons why I love this place for lunch. The number one, and only reason: Soup of the day - has been a different kind of chili every time I've been. Every time it's been completely awesome. And the kicker? 5 bucks for a bowl, with bread. WTF. How does everyone not come here for lunch? McDonald's is more expensive than that. I shouldn't even be posting this on the internet for fear that they raise the price. I had a $10 taco salad and a $5 pint at Sonny's. The salad had very little (tasteless) cheese and a lot of beans.The only memorable part was the guacamole which was quite good. I left the deep fried flour tortilla the salad was next to because it was impossible to cut. I was with a large party and can't say anybody's food really looked particularly worth the money...the burger eaters seemed to enjoy their meals though. The place was loud (it was a Sat evening) but I like the look. The service was good, our waiter checked on our waters and drinks throughout the meal. I might come back earlier in the evening or on a weekday for a drink but I wouldn't bother with a meal again.

I went to Sonny's on a Friday night with my 11-year-old daughter. I like to try new places, and we hadn't been before, so we thought we'd give it a try. I really like to eat at local businesses that use food from local farms, and Sonny's does that. It's also in a beautiful old building that I believe used to be a bank, and right on Exchange Street in Portland. So all that is good. We were seated right away on Friday night at 6 p.m., so that was a plus. The waiter was okay, nothing special. Did his job. The food was good. We had some crispy codfish balls with a spicy salsa-like sauce. The sauce was really good. Then the waiter brought bread drizzled with olive oil. The bread was just okay, some kind of white bread that was baked in house. But they didn't do a very good job of drizzling the olive oil on it, most of the pieces of bread were dry, and the bread wasn't good enough to eat dry. We asked for more olive oil, and the waiter brought us a small bowl. I ordered one of the specials as my entree: it was house-made angel hair pasta with clams and some kind of sauce with greens and capers. It was good, but not outstanding. My daughter had the beef brisket enchiladas, which she loved. It was expensive. With the tip, we spent over $70 for just my daughter and me, and we didn't get dessert (and she only drank water). I drank a glass of sparkly white wine, which was decent. Although it was pretty good, I probably won't be rushing back there (unless I have no reservations and can't get in anywhere else). Portland has way too many places that I think are better.

Great dÃ©cor! And that's where it stopped for me. Service was poor, waitress didn't listen well. It did seem that she had a lot of tables to care for. That tells me the manager dropped the ball. Cocktails were good, not great, beer selections was, "meh". Food was average, although the ceviche was the worst Ive ever had. Tasted old and flat, additionally, consistency was off. If we were out with a group and everyone wanted to go, Id go, but would never return otherwise. Many other excellent choices close by.

Sexy bar. The whole interior has got this art-nouveau-prohibition-bank-robber vibe going on. The interior is gorgeous with high ceilings, spacious seating, dim lighting... a perfect setting for seducing some unsuspecting cocktail enthusiast. Or, you know, hanging out with all of your friends. It's flexible like that. On my 1 night in Portland, I was advised to stop for cocktails at Sonny's, and I was not disappointed. In fact, I ended up stopping at Sonny's TWICE during my one-night Portland extravaganza. I had the opportunity to taste a spicy strawberry margarita, the classic margarita, and a greyhound. All were amazingly fresh with interesting flavors and great presentation. Though a bit on the pricey side ($9-11 each), I would definitely go there again. If I lived on the right half of the country. And I wanted to impress someone. And they were paying for drinks.

I had heard interesting, mixed reviews of Sonny's - a new place in Portland, ME that calls their fare "new world cuisine." As a foodie, this intrigued me. So, wanting to have a night out to drink some margaritas, eat some hopefully good food, and wear my cowboy hat without being laughed at (after all, it was Cinco De Mayo, which is the perfect excuse to dress up silly - aren't all "drinking holidays" like that?), we decided to avoid all the typical local Mexican places which we knew would be slammed and headed over to Sonny's. But the atmosphere at Sonny's was weird. For example, it definitely isn't the kind of place you wear a cowboy hat (mmkay, noted). It's the kind of place you wear skinny jeans and have asymmetric side-swept bangs. The bartenders were disinterested and inattentive. We were cut multiple times in the bar line by male patrons who literally pretended like we didn't exist or take up atomical space. However, the drinks were stiff and the food was unbelievable tasting (albeit it VERY pricey - paying nearly $10 for half of a pan-fried avocado seems absurd to me). The other really, really weird thing that needs to be mentioned is the serious lack of boundaries there seemed to be with some of the other patrons. We ate at the bar and had random's come up to us, completely invade our personal spaces, and ask us how we liked the food while staring at said food. Would I go here again? Yes... when there's less of a "corporate-hating" crowd, when I come into a lot of money, and when I don't have to eat in the bar area. The smashed beets topped with thick goat cheese was a delicious combination I had never thought of before. But, the yam fries were a disappointment - definitely not as revolutionary as everyone made them out to be; in my opinion they were a bit bland. I was impressed with the unique flavor profiles on each plate, but the price and the atmosphere was a bit too much/stereotypical/judgmental in my opinion.

Sonny's has a great classic old-money atmosphere. The portions are substantial and the service is friendly. I recommend trying the Cuban sandwich or the pancakes. All ingredients are made from scratch and are tasty.

Fantastic dinner during restaurant week. They were very accommodating and allowed us to change the time of our reservation at the last minute. The food was delicious and the service was very attentive. Get the plantain appetizer!

Stopped by for lunch on a cold day. Totally inviting. Love the old building and decor. Wasn't crowded so we opted to sit at the bar where we chatted with the nice bartender. I had fried plantains and spicy cuban meatballs. My partner had the chili rellenos. All of it was fabulous. Great combination of flavors. This was the highlight of our visit up to Portland from Boston. Would love to try it at night and have one of the specialty drinks.

Every time I have been to Sonny's the staff has been great, the food has been fresh and balanced, and the atmosphere is awesome. The cocktails are also fabulous. I have been here for brunch, dinner, before a show at the Merrill, and even had my 30th birthday party here. The staff was more than accommodating for my birthday party of about 15 people, and when I was off to see a show at the Merrill, everything was prompt and timely (of course we told the hostess while making the reservation we were catching a show, as any considerate customer should). I appreciate how everything is made from scratch---right down to the fresh squeezed juices at the bar! I have read some reviews about things taking time, but doesn't quality food and drink from scratch take time? Sit back, chill out and enjoy a nice cocktail. I'm looking forward to doing this on the patio this summer! Also, I am a Plain Jane when it comes to dressing/fashion.... what's with all the hipster comments? So funny, do people really care that much about what other people are wearing? Looks like a lot of high school hang-ups are being aired on Yelp. Haha, I'll be the girl in the black fleece and jeans and boring flip flops on the patio, sipping on a fabulous drink after stuffing my face with fresh local grub.

The little brother of Local 188. This place was good all around. Is that a compliment? Not if you care. Cool layout to the place, yet why don't I care? Interesting. Specifics are hard to come by with this experience. Been there a few times with food and without. Male bartender is a total dick. Why you angry son? Not getting tipped enough on overpriced under executed cocktails? Actually the tatted girl there was a dick too now that I think about it. Why? Oh, because the clientele is yuppie after-work douchey. Go somewhere else if you don't like it. Jeez....

Wow. What a gem Sonny's is. I just went there for lunch and I loved it. The decor, with the old bank vault/wine cellar, the original art and the nice big bar give it an air of sophistication, but the menu is simple and has a Cuban feel. I ordered the triple pork Cubano with dill pickles and mustard. It was delicious. I think it came with bacon, ham and pulled pork? And swiss. The meat is locally grown and it was fresh and not too salty. The bread was great and it came with nice snappy chips on the side. I also tried my friend's strawberry pepper margarita and I'm going to have to go back for one of my own. Fresh, spicy and delicious. The portions are good, and the lunch menu was reasonable, I would recommend Sonny's to anyone looking for something delicious and original.

Some of the salad greens weren't fresh. Ate it anyway. Flank steak was supposed to be grilled--hard to tell, no crystallized edges or crispy bits. And it, along with the garlic mashed potatoes, were barely lukewarm. And what happened to the accompanying roast vegetables: limp and drenched in some sweet and sour sauce. To their credit the fairly non sympathetic waiter handed me my bill where, without telling me, they had removed the charge for the entree. Thanks, but I dont think I will be back.

I am very conflicted in this review. We had essentially the polar opposite of service at Sonny's one afternoon while having drinks at the bar with my wife. The "B" squad consisted of the most uninterested female bartender I have ever met. She made no effort in her dress and was more interested in squeezing lime and lemon juice at the end of the bar rather then serve us within 5 minutes of sitting at a near empty bar. Totally pathetic. When she finally seemed like she HAD to come wait on us, we each ordered a drink and were ready to leave upon completion. 15 minutes passed when the two evening "A" squad bartenders walked in and immediately, the mood changed. They changed up the music, started chatting up the 6 or 8 of us at the bar and it all of a sudden seemed like a different restaurant. This was the second time we have been to Sonny's for drinks both times we have had mixed experiences but this time was truly extreme. I really wish Sonnys was as consistent as their sister restaurant, Local 188, and for this reason we have never given it much of a shot for a dining experience. And Sonnys management, if you read this, get rid of the blond haired bartender and give raises to the staff that actually care.

Went here last night for a wedding receptions/drinks, great wait staff - very knowledgeable! Amazing cocktails and the food was fantastic. My wife said the scallops were the best she'd ever had and my house-made pasta with market fresh veggies was to die for! I wish I live in Portland for this restaurant alone.

Their drink menu is amazing! Try the Greyhound. It made my New Year's Eve a VERY happy one. The staff is great and friendly. Even if you're not a "hipster" or a "regular", they are inviting and almost always remember what you're drinkin' My one complaint is the seating. There are few couches and then some tables but if you're not lucky enough to weasel in one (as someone is leaving), you're stuck standing in between the walkway and the bar. If you snag a seat, you could easily hang out all night.

I want to love Sonny's more than I do. I love the location and the outside patio...bar area is cool and there is a hip crowd always. Brunch is a let down but the bruch drinks are at a cheap price. Dinner is decent, not great but decent. Drink menu is impressive but the bartenders are inconsistent. My friend ordered a Bloody with Stoli and saw the bartender use the cheap stuff, brought it to her attention and she argued it was Stoli but in a different bottle that said "Poland Spring" Ummmm, ok then. Came back another time with Chris as my bartender and the drinks were right on. The Straw Dog is a must. Couldn't do more than one but that one is a must. The infusions in the window look appealing at first but once you realize that the sun is on them most of the day makes me wonder if there is any consitency in flavor there. Still, Sonny's is a hot spot on a night in the Old Port.

I LOVE SONNY'S!!! I love everything about it-- the atmosphere, the food, the drinks and the staff. It is a super cool, low-key, unpretentious yet gorgeous space (converted from a former bank) with expertly crafted food and drinks. (SIDENOTE: I couldn't help but wonder if there was a way I could get into one of the vaults or if they stored extra booze or other things back there.) The comfy couches in the front by the window are my favorite spot! It is an awesome date spot as well. Ok, so I digress. Back to the food and drink! I had one of the daily specials (the menu rotates constantly) and it was incredible. In fact, I actually cannot stop thinking about how incredibly delicious my meal was, and I was there in August. It was a grain-based dish with market vegetables and my poor recollection of what it actually was does not do this delicious meal any justice. We also had a few appetizers, all of which were equally delicious. And my cocktail was supremely good! You will not be disappointed if you go here for just food or just drinks, or both. This would be my local if I lived nearby. I'm jealous, you lucky Portlanders!

I went last night for dinner. The hot pepper infused strawberry margarita is so excellant that if I wasn't limited by cash I could probably drink neverending cocktail- however if it were neverending the evening would probalby end up with some table dancing, throwing up and/or arrest for public drunkeness. anyways... the food was also good. I got the potato and chick pea enchiladas which also came with rice and beans. Definitley a good solid meal but I probably wouldn't order it again as I didn't realize the potatos were going to be mashed within the enchilada and mashed potatos are not my favorite thing. my date got the baked white fish meal which looked fantastic and he reported that it was some of the best fish he's had in portland. The mixed veggies came were local and seasonal (fiddleheads!). The atmophere is totally cool since it's in an old bank, I think I also referred to it as "sexy" but who knows, that could have been the margarita talking. I will definitely be back to try other menu items and to have a hot pepper infused strawberry margarita, of course.

Went here for some late night cocktails. Great ambiance, and a classy design. They had a nice selection of flavor-infused liquor (I would recommend the chile-infused tequila). Prices are a little steep for the area, but if you're just in for a drink or two, you won't break the bank.

So, I must admit I only went to Sonny's for drinks, but they were delicious! It was one of those things where you look at the price of the drink and hope your getting what you pay for, and you definently do. I had two drinks, one called the back nine, which consists of their housemade strawberry rhubard infused vodka, with fresh lemonade. It was glorious and super good. The second drink I had, I dont remember the name but it was gin, a little lemon juice and ginger root. It was very good, especially if you love gin like myself. Overall, Sonnys was a great place for drinks and the inside of the building was gorgeous.

The location is beautiful. The service is the worst I've experienced in Portland. The food inexplicably is terrible. And I love Local 188. Weird huh? I will give it another go someday because I am such a Local fan, but man what a bad first impression.

Had a business lunch there yesterday. Perfect! The food was amazing. Spiced to perfection. The table had whitefish tacos, a burger, and I had the rice and bean with some squash i never eard of and tons of vegetables. Delicious. Waiter And service was great. The only thing is I might try to get a table in the front of the house then the back.

I went there yesterday for brunch. The blueberry pancakes were decent. The chorizo just a tad too spicy for me. But, oh my Lord, the waitress! She was AWFUL! The chorizo didn't show up without prompting, and, like a previous poster said, she never once came to check on us. Never again!

We happened upon Sonny's when we found that our restaurant of choice was closed. It was a lovely surprise. The staff was super friendly and the food was tasty. I had the vegetarian quesadilla with peppers and seitan, which was sweet, but also had a bit of a kick. One of my dining partners tried the chicken burrito which she liked. My other dining partner had the goat cheese tomatoes with a garden salad, which she liked, but said were not less filling than she expected. Overall, a decent experience.

Went there for breakfast . Single digit temps outside, nice and toasty inside. A very well lit place with large spacious rooms. Looks like it used to be an old bank. Anyway, ended up ordering the fish tacos made with lime juice and cumin seeds. Was absolutely the most delicious fish tacos I have EVER had!! Also had a single pancake that was amazing also. Apparently Nathan is the chef there. Thanks Nathan for an awesome breakfast.

I entered Sonny's with high hopes that it would be as awesome as Local 188, only to have an experience that had absolutely no high points. First, the table. Oh, the table. We were seated at a table that felt like it had been dug up from the basement after the hostess realized there was no where to put us, wedged in the middle of the bar, 2 wait stations and the wine cellar. It was in a hallway for flip's sake. Still, I REALLY thought that the food would be so delicious that it would make up for the complete lack of ambiance. Unfortunately the food we ordered was mediocre, leaving me with no desire to ever eat it again. The high point was the mussels, which were served in a broth that was still a little too sweet. The rabbit enchiladas with mole were basically rabbitless, and the mole was watery and overbearingly sweet (too sweet seemed to be a theme in every dish). To top it off, we had the world's worst waitress, who never once checked in to see if we enjoyed anything, or needed anything throughout the entire meal. A friend of mine said it best when he said "hipster tex mex? I'm all set."

WOW! We ate at Sonny's last night for the first time and we were absolutely impressed. When we arrived we almost got sat at this joke of a table in the bar that had people practically sitting on top of it already (seriously, they should not put diners there, it should be a bar table), but that was the only bad moment of our night. We ended up in the quieter back room with an incredible server (Heidi). The cocktail list is incredible (highly recommend both the Jaycito and Walk in the Woods). Their menu was so good, it took us forever to order. I ended up getting the sweet potato/cheddar fritters, ceviche (that night it was Maine shrimp and white fish) and their house salad. The fritters were nice and crispy. The ceviche was nicely tart (wish it was served with tortilla chips instead of crackers). The salad was incredible. How often do you rave about a restaurant salad? It was huge, full of local greens, thinly sliced apples, goat cheese and nuts. The dressing was nice and tart. It was awesome. My husband had the tamale, which was fantastic, and the seafood stew, which was full of white fish, mussels, clams and shrimp, and had a plate-licking-good chipotle cream sauce. He said it was the best fish stew he's ever had (that's his go-to dish if it's on a menu). Even the coconut cake was to die for--moist, just enough frosting, yummy cream in between the layers. Next time we return, we'll get cocktails then share a salad and the fish stew--both were huge and would definitely be enough for 2! So glad I got the Groupon to go here--we wouldnt' have necessarily tried it on our own, but will definitely return many times.

A group of a dozen of us went for lunch. They were very accommodating. The pumpkin soup was delicious but could have been hotter. The beet salad was the best I have ever had. It seems the beets were first grilled and then baked. However, they did it, it was wonderful. The kind waiter gave one of the ladies a free drink--a very nice touch. The waitress could have been a bit friendly, though. The gentlemen who greeted us and said goodbye was gracious. It can get very noisy. There is a long beautiful bar. It almost has a room to itself.
