I love the Riverside. It is completely charming, they've got great local musicians playing, and it's got a real neighborhood feel. I always feel right at home, even though it's been a long time since I lived in Ellsworth. The food could be a little more interesting, but, hey, what do you want?

Stopped here for basic breakfast...not outstanding but very solid. Eggs done as requested (one over easy, one medium), good home fries, and very decent homemade toast (oat, raisin both good). One person had a breakfast burrito...again decent and they were quick to make minor changes. Nice ambience for a small town restaurant...had a counter for those so inclined. Booths and tables nicely spaced. Service was quick. One of our go-to places for basic breakfast in Ellsworth.

The service on a Sunday morning was excellent. The waitress was attentive and friendly. The crab quiche was served with a large mixed fruit bowl and home fries. The quiche was very good as was the fruit. The home fries were average. My partner had the breakfast meat sandwich which was tender and fresh. The breakfasts of those around us looked equally tasty.

I eat breakfast here at least once/week. The atmosphere is good, the food is good, the waitresses are fantastic! I almost always order eggs cooked over medium and have never, not even once, gotten over medium eggs (good thing I'll also eat them over easy...!). Good place for a breakfast with friends!

I've been going to the Riverside Cafe since they were, well, located beside the Union river. Nothing special, just simple coffee shop fare. A nice place to bring the kids. During summer weekends expect a long wait.

This place wins as the best breakfast we had during our recent travels in Maine. So good in fact we came back a second time. On the first visit I had a most delicious sausage and cheese omelette. yelp.com/biz_photos/the-… Like any number of seemingly simple dishes, a perfect omelette in reality is difficult to achieve and takes a lot of practice. I can attest that whoever is doing the cooking in this kitchen has mastered the omelette. Mine was light, fluffy, and perfectly packed with delicious filling. Similarly my husband's ham, spinach and cheese omelette had him exclaiming. yelp.com/biz_photos/the-… On our next visit for breakfast I tried the Sunday Brunch Fritatta. yelp.com/biz_photos/the-… This was incredibly interesting and tasty and I would order it again in a heartbeat. If you visit on a Sunday, be sure to try this. It was like no fritatta I have ever had as it was at least 2 inches tall. I am guessing they pour the batter into a mold to achieve the perfect shape. It contained avocado, blue cheese and bacon and was lip-smacking good. My husband ordered the same sausage and cheese omelette I'd had on the first visit. He was practically swooning. Portion sizes are enormous and with both visits we had leftover food. The coffee was quite good., very well-balanced and smooth. I rarely go beyond one cup but it was so good that I had a second cup. We saw pancakes going by to other tables and while we are not pancake eaters, they looked quite good and were amazingly huge; plate-sized actually. Service was prompt and very friendly. The bathrooms were clean but on one visit there was quite a wait to get in as there are only two and this place is pretty big. Prices are very reasonable. Arrive early for breakfast on a weekend because the place fills up fast and a queue forms out the door.

Before we lived in the area, the Riverside Cafe used to be a must-stop restaurant on our visits to Maine. Sadly, they have gone way downhill in recent years. It's too bad, because we don't have many options in Ellsworth, and the ambiance is really nice. Went there for breakfast this morning, to give it one more try after a couple mediocre breakfasts in recent years. Sadly, it was more of the same. My boyfriend's eggs benedict were just OK. My spinach, mushroom, onion, and swiss omelet was kind of a disaster. The eggs were fine, but they put totally RAW veggies in it. Raw spinach at least wilts a little when you put it in a hot omelet (although it was still pretty darn raw), but mushrooms and onions don't cook AT ALL. The raw onions were so sharp that I had to open up my omelet and scrape them all off. It was 8am on a weekday, so they definitely weren't busy. Failing to cook the veggies for the omelet felt like just sheer laziness! (And it's not like you have to do them on the spot -- any decent restaurant would already have them in their mise en place so all the cook had to do was toss them in to rewarm). The homefries were lousy, too. They're just cubes of potato that have been deep-fried! No onions or garlic or anything. And to top it off, the staff wasn't very welcoming and our waitress disappeared while we were waiting for our check. Sadly, this was the last chance we're giving Riverside.

Had breakfast here on a cold morning: spinach, artichoke and mushroom quiche, eggs Benedict - a blast! The best Hollandaise sauce I've ever had: creamy and lemony. Their home potatoes are crunchy and tasty. Oh, and the cinnamon roll is perfect.

The staff at the Riverside Cafe have to be the friendliest, most accomodating people I've ever met! As soon as we entered this adorable little restaurant in downtown Ellsworth, we were greeted, seated and chatted up like we were long lost friends! We both really wanted lobster rolls, but our waitress convinced us to try a crab roll too. She said people from Bar Harbor drive all the way down to Ellsworth for their crab rolls. So of course we had to take her advice and ordered one of each to split. OMG, it was even better than the lobster roll, if that is even possible! It was sweet, tender and made with a lot of love! If you're ever in the neighborhood, stop in for a crab roll. You won't be disappointed! obster roll and crab roll with side salad.

The Riverside Cafe is a nice place to grab some breakfast and lunch. I am a huge fan of lobster so I recommend having one of their great lobster sandwiches. My family and I enjoy going there for lunch but breakfast is my calling for this place. All of their breakfast dishes are simple but yet very satisfying. The service is very good and the people that wait on you always offer good food with a smile. Not to mention a strong cup of coffee is what really hits the spot for me and they have plenty of it. What really gives this a four star is it's classy Mainer style that it gives off. The art there is very warming and welcoming. Not to mention that some of the art you can actually buy! It is a good place to go when you are driving through or just visiting Ellsworth. Give it a try!

Fantastic food, great service in a setting which we really enjoyed. You sit elbow to elbow with the locals who seem to love it too! We were in mid coast Maine for 8 days and had breakfast there every morning. I highly recommend the specials and the home fries are excellent!

Went for lunch but was craving breakfast. Ordered bagel & lox and it was done just right: capers, onions, tomatoes, lettuce plus tons of smoked salmon on an everything bagel, What more can I say?

I stopped here on my way home after a week vacation at Swan's Island and it was the perfect end to my Maine experience. I had the blueberry pancakes and spent the extra dollar for the pure maple syrup and I can honestly say I've never had a better breakfast. My waitress was very friendly and did a great job keeping my coffee fresh. The atmosphere here is really nice and if I lived in the area I would most certainly come back to try more of the menu. Riverside Cafe is going to be a regular stop for me every time I'm in Maine.

Riverside Cafe is the cutest restaurant! I love it here. It has really awesome artwork that you can purchase on the wall. A fridge full of baked goods that are so yummy! They have this blueberry pie that's filled with billions of blueberries! We went here several times while we were on vacation at Acadia National Park for 9 days. I found this "SWEET" place a month before coming home from Canada and couldn't wait to get back to it. The first time I was there, I was there for brunch. It was on a Sunday. It was amazing!! I had this portobello mushroom stuffed with egg and sausage. DELICIOUS! They had stuffed blueberry french toast that was piled so high I almost need a high chair to get the top piece! They also have mimosa's!! The best blueberry pancakes I ever had. I honestly would move to Maine just to eat here once a month! They always have specials, too. GET THE QUICHE..oh the QUICHE..how could I forget you..it came with a side salad for lunch..I'm still dreaming about it months later... The service all 4 times I've been her has been superb! was terrific and I just loved going here. We went back and had quiche that was delicious for lunch! It came with a side salad and it was just perfect. WHY O' WHY RIVERSIDE CAFE...do you have to be 6 hours away??? I'm kicking myself for not buying this really cool artwork on the well of this Gerbera Daisy..it was amazing.. GO THERE..if you do..will you email me and tell me all about it..so I can be jealous?

We were here on a weekend visit searching for a wedding venue and we stayed in Ellsworth. Breakfast is our favorite meal to explore and try different places but Riverside Cafe was so good we came back both mornings of our trip! Tonya gave us great service even during their busy Sunday (and DELICIOUS) brunch!

Although I will not be returning here it is not because of the food. After waiting a reasonable 10 minutes for a table we were seated and brought a round of sodas right away. We asked the waitress for a couple minutes for ordering but it took 15 minutes for her to return. After ordering, the food took another 30 minutes to arrive. While we waited we stared at a cart overfilled with dirty dishes and 7 dirty tables that were never fully cleared before we left. The waitress did not check in with us to explain the delay for over 25 minutes and did not refill our drinks until we asked. We also noticed that many other patrons also were waiting. The food was quite good- fried haddock and crab cake sandwiches as well as smoked salmon wrap- all delicious. Great fries too. The wait staff acted as if there was no manager on staff- lackadaisical, sat down on the job with friends and showed no concern for the mess at the tables around us. Weird experience- will not be going back.

I've been going to the Riverside Cafe for years - not because it was particularly good but it' generally ok in a dinerish sort of way though the service has at times left something to be desired - generally slow and a little disorganized. A recent experience has, however, made me resolve never to go there again. I was waiting with an obviously lame and bent ninety year old. The place was busy but not full and after about ten minutes I signalled to a waiter and gestured to the elderly relative. The waiter waved back and ignored us. After another five minutes another member of staff sat us and after a further wait our order was taken. By then we had been there for 25 minutes and I indicated to the waitress (the manager or owner I think) that we were a little concerned about the time as we had an appointment to get to. Very brusquely she told us that 'it wasn't fast food, you know" and that 'everything was cooked to order'. Fast food - in the sense of short order cookery - is EXACTLY what it is unless, like my (quite good) quiche it is microwaved. After that the food turned up in about twenty minutes which was reasonable if not speedy. The brusque waitress switched on a little charm having plainly realized that she had overdone it a bit earlier. We were out of there in just over an hour but after past experiences that were at best adequate I have decided to transfer my custom elsewhere. Just opposite there is one of those ubiquitous 'Irish' pubs where the service is efficient and the food surprisingly good. It's not a diner and the food is a cut above while prices are about the same.

The benedict is definitely the way to go here; they entertain substitutes ( ie a biscuit instead of the typical English muffin) and when it is available, you can add fresh crabmeat for an incredibly tasty & flavorful breakfast! Their quiche selection is always a good bet too. They also offer to butter & grill their muffins which just makes a good thing better. Coffee isn't gourmet or artisan but it is good and strong, which I suppose could be a description of their menu in general. I have not tried any lunch items; I gave four stars because there are certainly items in the menu that are less impressive, but the things they do well are excellent.

A microwave does not belong in a restaurant! Not in one that charges so much for the food that takes 40 min to show up! At the end of it all, the food didn't even taste good. Felt like we would've been better off going to Burger King.

A big thumbs up to this place for offering vegan breakfast options - vegan french toast and tofu scramble - but otherwise a typical breakfast-all-day kind of place. Our server was really good, though, and our food came quickly.

I visit Ellsworth once a year and look forward to seeing the same staff year after year. My vote goes for the fresh squeezed oj and any variety of "bennies". Unfortunately the pancakes and french toast are not as awesome.

My experiences at the Riverside have been hit or miss with the majority lately being a miss. The food has been mediocre at best, sometimes cold and needing to be sent back. There are many other, better places in the area to spend your dining dollars.

This place used to be great. We have been eating breakfast here during our visit to Ellsworth for the past 5 or 6 years. It seems that there is a new management, and all of the smiling waitresses are gone. We were seated for about 10 minutes before someone came to take our drink orders, and after another 15 minutes, I went up to the coffee station and poured it myself. When the waiter saw me walking back to the table with it, he just laughed! I ordered one egg and got two, and my husband ordered poached eggs and got fried. He also got a bowl of COLD oatmeal, probably because it had been sitting in the kitchen waiting for the waiter to pick it up for a half hour. Then there are the prices--a glass of juice, a coffee, two plates of eggs (one with bacon) and cold oatmeal came to $22. And the egg that I ordered was not cooked the way I had asked (over medium, is that so difficult? It was over easy). So...if you are looking for breakfast in Ellsworth, deffinitely try somewhere else. Tomorrow we will go to Martha's and see if that is any better.

Nothing special, generally not that very flavorful food. Only a few things on the menu actually have any kind of seafood. Mediocre service and wouldn't return for that reason.

My friends came here for breakfast two days in a row. It's that good. I joined them on the second day and I ordered the special, crab Benedict. The crab was fresh and flavorful and the hollandaise sauce was smooth and creamy. I'm kind of picky about hollandaise, I don't like a strong lemon flavor, and I thought that the flavor here was great. My friend ordered the other special which was an artichoke and mushroom quiche. I kinda wished I'd ordered that. I only had a couple bites, but I think it was one of the best quiches that I've ever tasted (it could be because I wanted more but didn't want to be a pig). Another thing I liked about the quiche plate was the lovely seasonal fruits. Friend #2 also ordered the crab Benedict, so I didn't taste hers, but they all came with some pretty good home fries. I'll probably eat here again next year when we go on our ladies literary retreat.

This is a nice diner right on Main Street it was clean and seemed welled organized. The service pretty good not great but Ok. We had omelets that were pretty good and the usually breakfast stuff. I rally can't complain about anything it was all fine nothing outstanding but good breakfast. Not one of my better reviews maybe the coffee was decaf and I have not been jolted awake yet

It was my first time in Maine and I came to this spot with my boyfriend's family. I kept it simple and ordered the pancakes with a side of bacon. I also split an order of eggs benedict which was also good! Service overall was just okay. The ambience was peaceful and definitely a place I could go back to.

All we wanted were bagels. There were nine in our group, just wanting something quick for the drive home. We were made to wait more than 20 minutes. Then there was some confusion from the cashier about what we ordered. Some were bagels w/butter others w/cream cheese. The cream cheese was given in a container so we asked for knives to put it on. These turned out to be the worst bagels ever. Mine was stale, partly soggy, and didn't taste it had any butter on it. I threw it out after a couple bites. Others in my group had similar complaints. On a positive note, the cashier was very apologetic about the confusion and the long wait. My hubby said his bagel w/egg and bacon was okay. We regretted not going to Dunkin Donuts after going to this place.

Absolute Chaos. I "tried" to eat there on July 5th. One would think they would have extra staff on hand for a busy morning that repeats EVERY year! Not so, it was a a crowded chaos all the way outside which is as far as I got. NO ONE was taking names (my wife went in and checked). not taking names? are they high? Actually there were SO many people waiting on the sidewalk they SHOULD have had a host/ess out there taking names and bringing out free coffee..wait, that would only be the case if they knew how to run a restaurant, they clearly don't. My advice, stay clear of this place. My advice to the owners, close down. move to another country and change your names. Thank you.

I went for breakfast and had a two-egg Main Street omelet with homefries, homemade whole wheat toast, and coffee. Their omelets are usually made with three eggs, but you can request them be made smaller with two eggs (for $1 less). Their toast is usually made with standard bread, but you can have homemade bread for $1 more. Although I had my omelet "downsized" it was still good sized. The filling - ham, onions, green peppers, and American cheese - was plentiful. This was an awesome omelet - one of the best I've had! The home fries were equally awesome. They were small chunks of potatoes, nicely browned and perfectly cooked. They even the skins left on! This was without question one of the best breakfasts I've ever had! Throw in the quaint old-timey look of the place, and they earned the full five stars!

Just bad If driving thru. Keep driving Ordered ground beef nachos Not sure why the cheese seems to be at the bottom of the plate or missing. The ground beef in some pieces was pink - under cooked The daughter had bow tie pasta the sauce was thick and looked and tasted straight out of a can The son had French toast. Passable. The hubby had pastrami sandwich. Ate half and had no problem letting kids share other half. Not passable and not redeemable. Waitress nowhere to be found. They're all doing double duty.

Interior: spacious, airy. Food: huge lunch and breakfast menus, many vegetarian options. The tofu scramble is healthy but much tastier if you get it with scrambles eggs and cheese. Surprisingly good bagel, good coffee, fresh sliced fruit. Service: Excellent. We were greeted almost immediately and allowed to choose our table. Host got our drink water right away. The server, Abby, could not have been more charming or sweet. Prices: very reasonable. The three of us left with a $32 ill before tip. Overall: probably our overall best dining experience in our three days on the coast.

Very accommodating staff for a large party for breakfast. Great selection of dishes, and everyone was happy with their food. I had the tofu scramble (a little heavy on the turmeric), great home fries, and a huge side of fresh fruit that they substituted for my toast. Will definitely visit again!

We were in Ellsworth for a wedding, didn't see anything interesting on the main drag for breakfast and my husband said, "Turn left up here". The Riverside Cafe was great. The atmosphere, food, and waitstaff were all wonderful. May go back tomorrow for brunch.

Slow, inattentive service. Breakfast took over 30 minutes to arrive and then the muffin and corned beef hash arrived burnt. Hash browns were dark and soggy. This used to be a such a great place for breakfast or lunch.
