Dear Friends and Family of Jen's Place, JEN'S PLACE WILL CLOSE MONDAY APRIL 13TH IF $12,000 IS NOT RAISED BY SATURDAY APRIL 11TH. Despite my efforts to remain open I have not been able to raise enough money to please all financial responsibilities. I am truly sorry for disappointing all of you. If I can get enough of your donations by this Saturday we may have a chance. This is definitely an URGENT REQUEST. Please know that I am fighting to the end. Jen

This was our first stop when we got off the plane into Portland. Overall I was not impressed. Yes the room is cheesy and thrown together, but that didn't completely bother me. My biggest issue was the food. Not great. The hash was super dry and not very flavorful. The french toast was pretty bland as well. The hashbrowns were also dry. My second issue was the service. It took an excessive amount of time for the women to walk over from behind the counter 3 feet away. I get it that maybe things move slower up here, but it was obvious that she wasn't doing anything. Also, the woman at the grill clearly didn't know how to run a kitchen. She looked at a deer in the headlights back there. I heard one of them mention that Jen wasn't in that day, so maybe they just had the B squad in and I was unlucky.

You can't get much more quintessential Maine than Jen's place. The place is small and kitschy and you feel like you're in their house and not at some restaurant. I highly recommend sitting at the counter so you can fully immerse yourself in the conversations and watch the breakfast theater going on in front of you. They have gluten free options so this is a good option for celiacs, even though immediately walking in your gluten contamination radar is probably going off the charts. They have all your brunch favorites and they do them all well, just remember to bring cash.

Service was great and the pancakes are so fluffy and huge! The place is very quaint which I love. Plus it's hard to find late breakfast around here !

Great breakfast - sweet family-owners, running the business. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and food!!! Thank you Jen and family!!!

Jen's Place is so Maine it hurts. What do I mean by that? If you want somewhere that has honest home cooking, affordable prices, and feels like you're having breakfast at a grandmother's house in Maine, then look no further. I love all of the mixmatched plates and coffee mugs - including the Lucky Charms one I had. The food was simple but delicious and the menu offers choices that everyone can be satisfied with. Just be sure to bring your appetite, as the portions are HUGE. There are some really neat maps out front that guests from out of town can pin their location on - it's a nice touch to see all of the messages they've left for the owner on how much they've enjoyed their visit.

Best perfectly prepared eggs, just as I wanted them cooked. Well done! And soft bacon. Very difficult for most places to understand those simple requests! Plus super potatoes, moist and browned, seasoned perfectly. Wonderful discovery for breakfast! Kind and accommodating service. Great over the top Xmas tchotchkes. Adorable. Nothing succeeds like excess! So happy to have discovered Jen's. (And Jen was at the stove on the morning we visited). Look forward to a return visit.

A nice local Diner with good food. Service was friendly and quick. Off the beaten track, worth it.

Good was great, but it takes F.O.R.E.V.E.R!!! to get your food. Wonderful place, wonderful people, but make sure to leave a long time before you need to be anywhere else.

Good solid breakfast place. The corned beef hash was awesome, but my biscuit was overcooked... Dark and hard. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The waitress was very friendly and efficient, but the prices were a little steep for the serving size.

Solid, traditional breakfast place with no frills. Be prepared to bring cash since they do not take card payment.

This place is a hoot! It is family run and the staff friendly and funny! Don't be thin skinned and enjoy the experience... Service was fairly quick and efficient. The breakfast menu is four pages long and full of goodies. My wife enjoyed her crepes. They were filed with yummy raspberries. She passed on the whipped and the cook said her feelings were hurt... They just didn't look as good without the whipped cream. I went for the home made corned beef hash omelette. It was excellent with large tender, pieces of corned beef and cheddar cheese. Our server mentioned that they had an LA film crew in last week filming a pilot for a Jen's Place reality show. Hmmm, that should be interesting. Oh yeah, resist the urge to use your cell phone while dining. Should you forget, your punishment will be to lead the diner in a song of your choice!

Had awesome corned beef hash, eggs and biscuits. Rather eclectic decor, stuff everywhere, makes it fun and interesting. The people are all super friendly.

First and foremost, it is cash only. So its good to know that going in. My husband and I go all the time and our bill is $14.30 for two breakfasts and coffees. As long as one of us has a $20 in our pocket, we're headed there for a really good breakfast with tip. Jen's Place is an interesting set-up. Its at the end of a strip mall of sorts in a non-typical space for a restaurant. The kitchen is open to the dining room and there is a bar overlooking the grill top that seems to be a good spot for locals chatting with the staff. Otherwise there are about ten tables. It is a small place, but I've never had to wait long for a seat. We keep going back because the do the breakfast basics well. Either my husband or I (or both!) enjoy their coffee, eggs, hash browns, sausage, & bacon. We haven't been adventurous with their menu, but they have about four pages of menu options. The folks that work there are really nice and very welcoming. They decorate for every season/holiday, changing up table linens, coffee mugs, wall decorations, etc. It makes me happy to go in there and I highly support you supporting this great local breakfast spot!

Awesome awesome super sized breakfast to feed a king and his family. If you order a truly worthy plate, you will leave stuffed! No question! The real hungry mans place to grab grub! Way to go! This place nailed it!

Always fresh homemade breakfast at its best. Don't let the building appearance fool you, inside it feels just like Grandma's kitchen. Not only will you get a delicious meal you will also get to enjoy the show Jen and her family put on. It is always a good time at Jens.

What's not to love? The silverware doesn't match, the mugs look like a Goodwill shelf and the servers are nothing special, but that's what makes this place so great!! Friendly, quick and comfortable...I wish we lived closer so we could go more often! And, they gave my husband $2 off on Father's Day...what a nice treat!

At first I was a big fan but now not so much. Probably won't return. I specifically ordered the special of steak, eggs and a biscuit. It was busy but not so busy that I had to wait approximately 35 minutes for food to arrive. It was explained to me that I was given a smaller steak than usual so I wouldn't be charged the regular price. What? The steak was gray, greasy and tasteless. Oh did I mention tough and sinewy? Eggs weren't anything special. I should have made the connection that the waitress didn't realize I was ordering off the specials board when she asked me what bread I wanted for toast. It didn't dawn on me until I was presented with my breakfast that there was a communication breakdown and I was missing a biscuit. I held my ground when I remarked that I was expecting a biscuit and I did end up getting one. The booth we were seated at was, like, half a booth and was an ill-fitting round table. The people seated behind us had the fan fall on them and the waitstaff seemed oblivious. The crowd was a mix of down-to-earth locals and snooty Bowdoin students who treat EVERYONE like an indentured servant. At least the bathrooms were clean. And the bill was reduced by around $5 but honestly for what we ordered, we would have spent at least $10 less than at Rolly's in Auburn. Everything on the menu is overpriced - a banana for over a dollar? The grits were clearly instant out of a Wal-Mart Great Value container.

We have been there for breakfast on numerous occasions. Good size portions, hearty and flavorful meals and friendly family atmosphere. You just have to love it. Not as much eating out as eating with your other family at Jen's.

Came in based on the yelp reviews and was pleasantly surprised by this quaint breakfast place. My husband had my phone out and had to break out in song which was very humorous. Would recommend to anyone!

Jen's place is a hidden gem and so is the staff. This place is a cluster of mismatched tables and chairs and I LOVE IT! My boyfriend and I found this by accident and now we are regulars. You can come in and pick a seat and Cory or Jen will be with you to get your drinks and your order. We try something new each time we go and I have never had something I didn't like. Last weekend I got the raspberry and chocolate chip pancakes with home fries. Holy moly! Don't worry about the portions, you will not leave hungry. But beware, if you get on your cell phone, be prepared to be embarrassed. They will MAKE YOU get up and sing or do the bunny hop around the place. The staff will joke with you and give you crap so be prepared. If you are stuck up, this is not the place for you. We love to sit at the counter because you can watch them cook and listen to them give each other a hard time. It is a fun atmosphere and Jen and her family make you feel like you are right at home.

Am I missing something here? Went hoping to enjoy a yummy casual breakfast with friends...but what we got was something far different. First off, service was awful. They are clearly understaffed. When we were seated we were handed menus and then ignored for over 20 minutes. It was very hot in there with the kitchen right in the dining room and no fans on the diners to help start a breeze, and we didn't even have water glasses. Finally the waitress came over, after we watched her head to three other tables apologizing for how long they had been waiting too (note: the restaurant was barely half full). I really wanted a bagel sandwich, so I ordered an everything bagel with tomatoes, egg, mushrooms, and cheese. My boyfriend got (I can't quite remember the name) some sort of breakfast bowl, with hashbrowns and bacon. Egg was optional and he was very glad he added it (without it, the dish was essentially very greasy potato and nothing else, and the fried egg added much-needed flavor). My bagel was literally the worst I've ever had in my life. How can an everything bagel be so tasteless? It was a soggy, flavorless mess. In fact, nothing on the sandwich had any flavor... the whole thing was bizarre. I was piling on the salt and pepper but couldn't even get halfway through because it was like eating paper. The hashbrowns were cooked nicely, but again, needed lots of seasoning to make them taste like something. And they were so greasy! One star for the fun, kitschy atmosphere, but other than that, definitely pass this place by. Get a breakfast panini from Wild Oats or drive down to Bath to get stuffed French toast at Mae's. Don't bother with this place.

  • Meridith H.

This place is a quintessential small town restaurant (as in, they don't call it kitsch, they call it decor). Service is friendly & efficient, and the food is about what you'd expect in such a place: diner coffee & simple dishes cooked without frills.

  • Juliana V.

Great place! A real local spot that could be easily overlooked but shouldn't be. Its exterior (and interior) are not reflective of the food that can be had here. What could be better than a place that only serves breakfast? I had the homemade corned beef hash which was superb. And the people were really nice too!

  • Margo G.

Visited while on vacation after reading reviews on Yelp. Great place! Family-owned. Jen cooks, her mother waits tables, and her father helps prep and buses. I think her brother cooks on weekends. Don't let the kitschy decor put you off. Best omelet I've had in years--including my own. More grits (my requested substitute for home fries) than I could eat in a day and perfectly made. My husband loved his eggs over easy (again, perfectly cooked) and accompanying short stack. Would come back again in a heartbeat.

I almost feel guilty giving this place 2 stars after seeing so many positive reviews, but the experience my wife and I had was absolutely nothing short of awful. This restaurant is very small, I want to say between 10-15 tables at most plus a "bar" area. Sometimes small places are a good thing, but not on the day we went. To be fair, it was about 10:30am on Labor Day, and it was EXTREMELY busy, which I know is not anything that is in their control, but they didn't seem to handle the large crowd of people well. The waitstaff was very disorganized and the waiting area is very small and cramped. Once we got to our seat, we were given our menus and requested coffee from our server. That arrived quickly, no problem there. But we then were waiting roughly 10-15 minutes for our server to get back to us to take our order. Okay, it was very busy. But as soon as our order was taken, we were told by the server "it'll be a few minutes before it goes in". Both my wife and I ordered the eggs benedict, and we were so relieved when it finally arrived, roughly 20 minutes after we ordered. The actual eggs benedict was quite tasty, the sauce was seasoned well and the egg, ham, and english muffin were cooked to perfection. The home fries that went with it, however, were severely undercooked, with some of the potato pieces still tasting raw. Moral of the story - I really wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt on how busy it was, but we just couldn't give it anything more than 2 stars. If there's a wait to get in, you're best off to go somewhere else.

This is going to be a bit of a different review. In regards to the food and service it was top notch. My girlfriend and I went up Maine for a wedding. Before our drive back to Boston we stopped by this amazing breakfast joint. When we left my girlfriend left her purse at the restaurant. We didn't realize this until we drove all the way back home. We called Jen's place after hours while they were cleaning up. They heard our plea and agreed to mail her purse back to us free of charge. They were kind and so helpful! It really goes to show that they have fantastic people at Jen's place. Not only do they have fantastic food they were so very kind in our time of need This was truly a selfless act. I can not recommend them enough!

This place is a gem of a restaurant. My family is BIG on breakfast places, and Jen's Place far exceeded even the glowing reviews here. A little out of the way, and it took a little bit to get our food, but well worth the find and wait. The food is reasonably priced, but I wouldn't call the portions generous, they're typical for most breakfast places. But the corned beef hash was amazing! I even bought a few sides of it to take home with me! The biscuits looked homemade and were fantastic. The rest of our meals, stuffed pancakes, eggs, etc was really good, the staff was warm and friendly, and the decor feels like my grandmother's kitchen, in a good way! Liked: Excellent food, great people, great prices, attentive service Not so much: Cash-only, limited parking, had to wait a bit for food

I was in brunswick for a wedding and needed a solid breakfast before a long day, and jens place was it! The pumpkin pancakes were deeeelicious and combined with a sweet potato biscuit and sausage, it was just what i needed. All of that and coffee came in at under 11 dollars too!

I was in town for a wedding and wanted to find a place that did good egg dishes for breakfast. A local resident recommended that we try Jen's Place. It's a little off the beaten path and can be easy to miss. The decor is pretty loud, and you do wonder what the deal is (especially if you're used to places like San Francisco). But it's really worth it. Service is quick and friendly, and the dishes are very tasty and filling. I wound up coming here twice. The first day was just 2 of us, the second day, I brought a bunch of my cousins. When we came back, we had a group of 9 and seating for us was pretty much instant. The total bill for 9 of us, including about a 20% tip, was $80. Beat that, SF!

I am a huge breakfast fan and was delighted to discover this gem near my parents' home in Freeport. Though the outside looks a bit like a warehouse, the inside is cozy and perfectly small-town-Maine with mismatched tablecloths and chairs and a wide assortment of mugs for coffee. The exposed kitchen (with Jen herself cooking up your breakfast) brings the eatery vibe up a notch beyond kitsch. The food was a delight as well. I had the "Wyoming Grits", which consisted of grits mixed with sausage and cheddar topped with two poached eggs and rye toast. I was expecting something that would sit like a brick, but it was remarkably light and satisfying. Yum! Two of my party had "Doug's Double Berry Delight" French toast, which is a blueberry muffin sliced in thirds, dipped in French toast batter, grilled, and topped with a warm raspberry sauce. It was delicious, rich and sweet. The corned beef hash and sweet potato biscuit were also remarkably good. As was the oatmeal apple waffle...And the blueberry pancake... Basically, there was a wide variety of interesting options on the menu and everything we ordered was great. And the prices were unbelievable. Five brunches plus coffee and juice came to about $40! Check this place out. Just be prepared for a little wait (15-20 minutes on a Sunday morning).

I think Jen's Place has gone downhill from last time I went a couple of years ago. The swiss cheese in my omelet was overwhelming. The toast was over-buttered. The home fries seemed like they were made out of potato cubes from a bag. Also, our waiter was not actually a waiter (he was filling in for a waiter) led to an awkward and less than stellar experience. When I went to Jen's Place a couple of years ago, I had a veggie omelet (it was not on the menu this time), which was very good, and the service was perfect. Maybe my experience was a fluke? I will give Jen's Place the benefit of the doubt and give 3 stars instead of 2.

This place is definitely not much to look at from the outside. When you enter you are greeted by friendly people that appear to all be related in some way to each other. Jen wasn't there the day we had breakfast. Jen's mother was our waitress and made us fell at home with her very friendly service. They serve a hearty home-style breakfast cooked in the old fashion diner style. Prices are very reasonable. Everything was cooked just right and served hot off the grill.

We went here for a weekday breakfast after seeing Yelp reviews. A breakfast and lunch place--5 AM to 2 PM Monday through Saturday, 6 AM to 2 PM Sunday. Cash or checks only, no credit cards. Small, quaint, informal, family operated neighborhood restaurant. Cheerful and friendly staff, good food, good service. Extensive menu choices; over 70 items on breakfast menu, about 40 items on lunch menu. Prices range from $1.75 for a hot dog to $11.99 for a hash omelet. Eggs Benedict at $7.19! Huge portions + low prices = greatest value we have seen anywhere. jensplace.biz We will go there frequently.

A great place for breakfast! I love the pancake sammich! The menu here has lots of fun choices. It's a family business with a very friendly and welcoming staff, and the place is often busy though I've never had to wait for a table. The restaurant is small and kind of quirky with child-like decor. It's casual and comfortable, and the food is exceptional. If you're looking for breakfast in Brunswick, Jen's Place is the place to go!

Great place and food was excellent! Be prepared for large portions and try the sweet potato biscuits, a must! Large variety of menu selections. Very friendly place obviously a local fav. We enjoyed the decor, all the tables had different Halloween themed table covers. All the coffee mugs are different and very good coffee. Would recommend to all.

I'm a habitual diner fan and my nose is always in the air searching for such out of the way places like Jen's. I found this wonderful little oasis of good eats while cruising the Brunswick thoroughfare heading north. My my better half and I walked in and were greeted as warmly as mom would if she were still around. The mainly retired and local clientèle were carrying on like it was their extension of home and the food was exactly what you would expect to comfortably find at such an easy going location. Like mom (Jen) was cooking up a feast and it was available quickly, the hostess was chatting and carrying on like a good friend getting everyone taken care of. The only thing that bums me out is that it will be awhile before I get up that way again but to any one who reads this I highly recommend popping in for a meal. The menu is down to earth and diverse so you can't go wrong there are bound to be multiple choices you would love to have in front of you so choose wisely and enjoy.

Excellent place for breakfast if you like local fare. Off the beaten path, but well worth it. Reasonable prices, use the local produce, and have great blueberry pancakes.

Such wonderful reviews and yet such mediocre food. I have to believe it's an anomaly caused by Memorial Day weekend and Bowdoin graduation. But still.... It's a pretty tiny place, but for the rave reviews we figured we'd wait for a table. Once finally seated in the eclectic mish-mash of tables and chairs and booth pieces we received coffee immediately and our order was taken quickly. The waitress advised us they were "slammed" and food would be a bit of a wait. The kitchen is in full view, so while we waited we could observe their cooking and working tickets. It seemed as though they could only work one ticket at a time. Mind you, the restaurant has a capacity of only about 40, so I figured, "how long could the wait possibly be for breakfast?" Thirty minutes, that's how long. The food was exceptionally non-descript. It's as if there are no seasonings of any kind in the kitchen. The home fried potatoes were barely cooked and devoid of any flavor other than starchy potato water. The corned beef hash looked like it should have been epic. It was clearly homemade with lots of nicely shredded beef, potatoes and carrots. It was so sad that it should have no flavor. I got the hash omelette which, I can't believe this should be a problem but it was, was made with way too many eggs. It was a frittata folded in half. The eggs were over an inch thick. The BF got the sausage gravy and biscuits with poached eggs. The gravy looked more like, well, something unappetizing and there had to have been a pint of it. The presence of sausage was the one bright spot in the dish. It was quite good, possibly because it's the one thing they didn't make from scratch. The eggs were broken (okay, I know. I'm getting picky now.) And he had the same sad, starchy, watery potatoes. But hey, the coffee was good. So there's that.

Wow, what a fun place! I drove 15 miles for this breakfast and it didn't disappoint. Its definitely a no frills, NO complaining type of place. Jen, the owner, is seen all over the place, super friendly and funny. There is a sign on the wall when you first walk in, I can't remember the name, but something to the tune of "we are slow, don't complain" It was cute, and they are very slow when theyr are busy so have patience. Also, apparently, this is an unspoken rule about using your cell phone in the restaurant. If you use it and are caught, they will make you sing a song infront of the whole restaurant. Is it true? I have no idea! The food was good, probably one of the fluffiest omelets I've ever had. Some portions looked huge as I looked around and others seemed kind of small, as was my dining partner's. I'd love to come back, this place was one of the most fun places I've been for breakfast. I can't believe Boston doesn't have anything like this.

Some say kitschy. I just say terrible. The decor of this restaurant detracts from the mediocre at best food. Plates, cups, and silverware were mismatched and unclean. The kitchen staff used the restroom without washing hands and picked their noses (I witnessed both personally). I felt uncomfortable watching the other patrons, mostly upper 50s overweight locals, stuffing their faces with overpriced generic breakfast food. I would not recommend this place. Not a diamond in the rough, or any such hidden gem. Just another lump of coal.

Cannot give a review on the food. We were going to eat there but when we walked in there was a sign stating "Cash Only". Wow, I haven't seen that in ages. Oh, they did have wifi though.
