This is not a fancy place to eat, but it is certainly nice to know you and your companions do not even have to get out of the car to order. It would be nice if they accepted debit and credit cards, but they have an ATM inside. As far as what to eat here, go for the crabmeat rolls! The Fat Boy Whoper Burger and Royal Burger are OK, but the seafood is where it is at.

Ok so the list is pretty long of what I love here. Lobster rolls, shrimp rolls, onion rings, frappes, blts.... I could go on and on. This is my favorite place in town for lobster rolls. I grew up coming here and their food has never disappointed. Love the true drive in. Not many places in America still have a real drive in. I've also eaten inside which is much like an old fashion dinner. All the staff is very friendly. Cool thing about this place was it was featured in Sunset magazine.

Everything is good - food AND service... but alas, my modern car makes turning on the headlights to get server attention an air pollution experience to my fellow car diners. The limited dining space in my car also make my dine in car decision a questionable one. Had the burgers, the hotdogs, the fries, and onion rings, all good ol' greasy deliciousness! Time to re-visit again soon.... whose car should I use to dine in? Hmm...

Having been born and raised in Brunswick, it's no wonder that I'm a fan of Fat Boy! The classic 50's drive in is definitely the main appeal, but really: I just *REALLY* enjoy the food. Be aware though: When the season first starts, it's absolutely insane! Not just in the sense that there are mass amounts of vehicles, but also in the fact that the wait tends to be much longer than usual (they have more tickets than they can "hold," from what I've seen while waiting), which leads to errors in orders. It's also a lot of the car hops' first season, so they're already rushing/trying to figure things out. I try to wait it out for about a month to let the hype die down before I get my Fat Boy fix because of this very reason... but my mom insisted that we go, and I'd be dumb to refuse free food! I ordered my usual: A whopper basket (which no longer is a "basket" apparently??) with extra crispy fries and a strawberry frappe. --The burger this visit was cooked well enough, but I ordered it with *only* ketchup/lettuce/extra onion, and I ended up with a heaping amount of tomato and so much mayo that I gagged (I don't like mayo). Because of it being so crazy and because I don't like to be "that guy," if my food is wrong I suck it up & usually enjoy it anyways, but when I gagged, I was... not the happiest. --The frappes are my favorite by far. Thick & creamy. Everything a frappe should be! That's about all I have to say about that. TL;DR: Don't go at the start of the season. Wait it out a little bit longer, and you'll get exactly what you asked for.

Over many summer visits, it remains ok but the trend is downward. Food - classic coastal drive in. Clams are good, scallops are good, fish is good, fries are good. "excellent' remains elusive. My family has noticed that portion size is decreasing while price is increasing. Service - good Ambiance - classic drive in. Menu choices - good Price - kind of high.

Cheap, fun, and delicious - the best lobster rolls you can get for under $7! Skip the fries (they are not freshly made) and get the onion rings... And if you are still not fully satisfied, frappes/milkshakes are huge (20 oz.) for less than $4! You definitely have to try the inside-your-car dining experience - so fun and uncommon nowadays. My only complaints are (1) they only take cash and (2) they can only take one check per car... So if you are trying to split the check (like we did among 5 people...), you have to work out the cash swaps amongst yourselves, which is a pain. They can split the check if you get a table, if you want to skip the hassle.

Excellent stop on a rainy day for some "comfort" food. This is truly an old fashioned drive in diner. Seafood was great and the burgers, dogs, and fries keep the kids happy! Be sure to stop here when in the area.

This is a flashback of Adventure Car Hop in Saugus, MA for me. Where else can you sit in your car and be served a great meal by a smiling person? Everything is good, Haddock nuggets, clams, onion rings. Yum. The frappes are amazing too. Love it. It's a fun, Midcoast experience.

Remove the nostalgia and this place would close. The food is blah at best. Everything is frozen nothing fresh, when friends say they are going to fatboys I have to refrain from saying "Why" (its their choice) if I want to be served mediocre food by a woman in a parking lot I will send my wife into Burger King.

This place has great car side service with engaging staff who are happy to help you decide on what to order and let you know how to get service. To get service turn your lights on. The menu has something for everyone seafood chicken burgers hotdogs and plenty of sides. The buns are all served toasted, which I absolutely loved. Don't forget the celery salt for your hot dog either.

I've been trying to figure out why people love Fat Boy so much for a year now. Still haven't figured it out. Service is slow, food is okay, but not fantastic. The crinkle fries are not very good at all (they're not crispy or flavorful), but Brunswickians love them. Milkshakes (aka "frappes") are okay, but again, nothing special. You might as well drive another mile down the road to Five Guys, where you'll get a better burger and fries. Plus, unlike Fat Boy, they're open year round. Plus you won't get stuck trying to eat while a chain-smoker in the next car over ruins everybody else's meal.

Great onion rings, decent bacon cheeseburger, decent fries. Fries not as good and greasy as McDonald's, but they are similar and they are much thicker and more potato-ey. I enjoy them very much. The fun thing is the summers where you can go in your car and the waitress comes out and they deliver right out to you. I have good memories of piling a group into the car, parking at Fat Boys, ordering without having to move a muscle, getting the food INSIDE the car and shoveling it in in there. Good times. Not the most amazing food in the world but it is a fun time, and I love the big fat boy on top of the restaurant. Cute, and worth a visit at least once.

First time coming here it wasn't that great, but second time the food was pretty good. A little expensive for fast food but not too bad. Over all not a bad place to try. But watch what you order!

Finding this place was a cool surprise. You'll be more inclined to think this place is cool if you can actually remember when these kinds of drive-ins were regular roadside fixtures in small town USA...which without dating myself too badly I hope, I do vividly recall. This place has stood the test of time in lovely Brunswick. During our recent visit, the place was hopping so it's clearly still a popular place to grab some food. Just like in the hey-day of drive ins, you pull your car into a spot and turn on your headlights indicating you want car-side service. Out comes the car-hop! Not on roller skates like some places used to have but still out she comes right to the driver's side door. The menu is the Maine version of old school drive in items so in addition to burgers and hot dogs you can get lobster and crabmeat rolls, fish sandwiches and Maine crab cakes. We both tried the lobster rolls and the onion rings. The onion rings were hot, crisp and freshly made. The lobster rolls were good but I could have done with less mayo. The prices here are pretty retro too...very easy on the wallet. There are a few tables inside as well if that's your preference. It's a bustling beehive of activity in the open kitchen in there. It looked like all the cooks were adults and all the car-hops were teens. The inside could do with a bit of sprucing up. Retro is fun but sometimes things do need to be repaired and updated. Nevertheless, this is a fun place for a bite on a coastal Maine road trip.

This review is probably a bit biased since I used to live in Brunswick and this place is a bit of an institution there. During my last visit to the area, I decided it was time to introduce my family to this place. Suffice to say, it was nice to see that some things never change. We opted for the full Fat Boy "drive-in" experience of ordering and eating our meals in our car. The service was great and the food, while by no means the height of fine cuisine, was just as I remembered; decent and cheap. The thing to keep in mind is that Fat Boy is more about the experience and the nostalgia than it is the food. One word of warning; Fat Boy is a cash only operation and does not accept credit cards.

It's decent I guess, it's more about the sitting in your car shtick than actual above average food. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad but it isn't great either. Too many cash only places in Maine, suck it up and raise your prices to pay the CC fees and join the rest of the world in using something other than cash!

Basic Drive-In food - and not very good at that. The only reason to go here is for the experience. It is TRULY the real deal as far as old school drive-in restaurants go. It gets a one star for food and three stars for a kitchy-cool experience (on a nice summer evening). Averages two stars, which is about right.

We came here this past weekend. I love this place normally and the food is good for what it is. Fat Boy is a well loved staple of Brunswick. You can eat a burger in your car and enjoy a tasty frappe. The food is cheap and you get what you pay for. It's greasy cheap food. The fries, burgers, nuggets, seafood is all frozen. They do still make their own onion rings which too are extremely greasy. I eat here maybe once a year when I want a frappe and a good old fashion cheap pile of greasy fried food. You're almost guaranteed to have stomach cramps from the food. I give it three stars because it's not the worst food I ever eaten and it is pretty nostalgic.

We look forward to spring every year. Ya, the warm weather is nice and so is the snow melting. But let's face it; we love spring because Fat Boy's opens. This is good food, cheap, with great servers. It gets cramped at lunch and dinner time, so get there a little early or plan on eating a little bit later in the day to get a spot. There are a few seats inside, but what is the fun in that!? If you are expecting a divine cuisine, then you are going to be disappointed. It is good simple food and amazing frappes! It is cash only, but there is an ATM inside!

Even though these days I am trying to eat healthier, I can tell you that I loved going to Fat Boys as a kid......its the experience of the drive in, something that many people never get to experience. (I am not counting Sonics chains.) In high school after hitting the beach, we would go to Fat Boys for ice creams at night and just hang out in the parking lot and watch the planes take off and land. There is something magical about hanging outside with friends eating fried food and ice cream on a summer evening. I gotta stop here when I am home again.....

Our Maine Lobster Roll Tasting continues. Lobster Roll #2: Fat Boy Drive-In, $6.25/lobster roll - Very mayo-y - Lettuce for crunch - Buttered, toasted Wonder-hot-dog bun - Sprinkled with cayenne pepper and paprika Overall rating: 2.5 lobster claws Although this roll had more mayo and lettuce, the lobster (although I don't recall the chunks being all that big) filled the insides. As a whole, it was tasty. The $6.25 price tag was also delicious. Non-lobster notes: - Infamous BLT with, wait for it... Canadian Bacon!, ($2.50) was not worthy of their coast-to-coast fame but was still yummy. - Fishwich with tartar sauce ($2.90), was insanely good. Crispy on the outside, moist and fresh on the in. - Vanille frappe or "frapp" as our server called it ($3.05), was huge. Americana huge. But oh-so-freaking-good. Thick, creamy, I-may-burst-at-the-seams good. Our hopes were set on seeing these serves on rollerskates. That, friends, didn't happen. But, we did get a kick out of the window tray they bring your food on. Wind down your car window to leave about 4-5 inches, and the tray just sits atop. Just like that. Oh yes, don't forget to turn on your lights to order! That's very important, as calling out the window doesn't get you very far. Two lobster rolls down and we're still hungry.

This place is the jam-nasium. What happens is, they put a tray on your car window and serve you in the parking lot. It's a great place for people watching and setting a level playing field. Everything is buttered. They didn't have lactose intolerance in the 50's. Onion rings, frappes (milkshakes) and burgers are all pretty damn good. They call their burger the "WHOPER" which I always found hilarious. They are older than certain other fast food joint, so they have their way. (Which is with butter). Fat Boys is an institution. Lights on for service!

Any establishment that allows me to drive to it and not get out of my car to get food rocks. And one that brings the food to me on a funny window hanging tray thing rocks more. Bummer that I didn't discover Fat Boy until it was almost too late, but I had a decent share of greasy cheeseburgers, soggy fries, and yummy milkshakes. And the $5 lobster roll was totally worth it. Just remember to turn your headlights on when you need a waitress, and you're on your way to greasy fatty food heaven!

While the old-timey drive in experience is not without its charm, truth be told, I just find a table and chair even more charming. It was an experience; I'll give it that. However, as I am not morbidly obese, cartoonishly lazy, handicapped (yet) or completely anti-social (emphasis on "completely"), I just don't see the problem with actually going into an establishment to eat. It would be one thing if the drive in was quicker than actually going in (it's not), or if you saved on a tip (you don't), or if our fries and onion rings were warm (they weren't); add to that the guy smoking, two cars down (prick), the increased opportunity to stain your clothes (we did), the sun in your face (it was) and the long waits to grab the attention of a server, and I really wish that one of the (five?) tables inside had been open. As for the food (finally), it was standard burger joint fare, if slightly better than conventional fast food. It was no Five Guys, or In-and-Out, but it was sure-as-hell better than any of "the Big 3". And I'm sure that the sides would have tasted great, had they been warm! (I would have settled for "not-cold", even) Now, this place still managed a 3 star review- not for ambiance (understatement), or quality, or service (the last just because it was so damned busy; the waitstaff seemed to work hard). No, the mid range review was all about the prices. In an area of the state where a business can, and will, look you right in the eye and charge you almost $10 for a BLT, $18 for a lobster roll (when lobster prices are $3.50 a lb), and $25 for a few bland ribs, this place will sell you a cheeseburger for under two bucks, and fries for half your pocket change. I love to bitch about over-priced food, and, sadly, this place stole that joy from me (to be replaced with a nice layer of arterial sludge). Well, saving money is good too, I guess. PS Don't believe that dirty liar who sang the praises of the mocha frappe, unless you swoon over McDonald's style, soft-serve, diabetes elixirs. I regretted my purchase at the second sip (but I finished it, like a trooper).

You know it's really spring and heading toward summer when Fat Boy's reopens. It's all about drive in atmosphere -from another time- or more correctly - frozen in time. Burgers, fries, onion rings - shakes - leave your good eating social conscience at home and enjoy - there aren't many places like this one -with car side service. what a hoot.

A hand-me-down from my parent's sock-hop generation, Fat Boy Drive-In still rocks. One of those establishments where you add calories just by pulling up in your oversized SUV, turning on your headlights and rolling down your window 1/2 way. A helpful teenage girl will soon hike out to take your order (no roller skates though, sorry). The menu, which includes Frappes and all things fried, also features Fat Boy's very own Whoper (they had to drop a "p" because BK got angry). A strong presence with locals as tourists drive curiously by en route to the lame fast food joints up the road. Bonus: while chomping on your '50s style food, watch the P3s zoom by overhead as they fly their last runs before the Naval Air Station closes for good. Hopefully Fat Boy won't follow.

Good value but you get what you pay for. I think the experience of a drive-in is the drawing factor. I had the grilled cheese and onion rings. The onion rings were tasty but the grilled cheese was greasy and nothing special. I've done my time....

My Ex husband used to be stationed at NAS brunswick. Fat Boy is a yummy stop if you are visiting New England. Their Lobster rolls are decent, a little skimp but what do you expect for 5 bucks?? The onion rings and frappes are stellar. A must try.

It's decent for the price. They help keep their prices down by keeping it "cash only," which although my husband complains about it, I certainly don't mine. It's not the best food I've ever had, but certainly not the worst, either. The fact that it's a 50s-style drive-in gives it bonus points. I just wish that my husband would agree to go here more often.

The 5 stars are for Fat-Boy's mere existence and car service, they are not for the lobster or crab rolls. The low prices for the lobster/crab rolls are a Siren's song. You will be lured into the drive-in for a $5.00 lobster roll, but if you care about big meaty chunks of fresh lobster, you'll be unhappy. The same goes for the crab rolls (not the chunk part- no chunks in crab rolls). There is way too much mayo, or white binder material in both and the meat seems, well, not freshly shucked. I feel badly saying anything negative about Fat-Boy's, but this review is going in my list about crab and lobster rolls. In all honesty I have eaten lunch here for the past two days and did get a crab roll because of the price, and yes I was disappointed. It is a good thing I ordered a cheeseburger and fries to pack down my crab roll. The crab roll is the least disappointing of the two, so get that instead of a lobster roll. The canadian bacon BLT on a hamburger roll is a specialty- it isn't that special. I agree with some of the other reviews about the food being so-so and, what's all the fuss about....? Fat-Boys is just a piece of Americana that is quickly disappearing and for that they get 5 stars just to keep them as they are. Where else can you have a meal hanging off your car window and watch Navy transport planes take-off? "TURN YOUR LIGHTS ON FOR SERVICE."

Holy crap! A lobster roll, another sandwich, a frappe, a soda, and a side of onion rings ALL FOR FIFTEEN BUCKS?!? It's not the best lobster roll in Maine, but it's the cheapest good one. Definitely worth the drive out, even if it were just for the atmosphere (it isn't . . .it's good there, too).

The wait can be really long on busy days but this a Brunswick institution. The Canadian bacon BLT is awesome as well as the onion rings and frappes. Definitely worth the visit!

Every spring, locals count down until Fat Boy's opening day. Growing up, you see a lot of classic places fade away with the memories. Fat Boy Drive In is still standing and going strong even after the base closing. It's difficult to sound original after what are, in my opinion, so many accurate reviews but I'll give it a shot... Fat Boy's has a cool schtick as a drive-in and while you can eat inside, seating is VERY limited. The service can, at times, remind you why drive-in's aren't around very much anymore. The servers are generally great and friendly but it's difficult to get their attention, especially in the day when your car lights (which you're supposed to turn on for service) aren't very visible. The food is great for lunch or a casual dinner (think burgers, fries and lobster rolls that run on the smaller side portion-wise) but since it's popular with tourists and locals, it can get very busy (upwards of a forty minute wait while sitting in a parking lot). The bottom line is that Fat Boy's is definitely worth a try but only if it's convenient; I wouldn't feel compelled to visit, especially if you're choosing from a variety of restaurants and looking for a view.

Situated across from BNAS and up the road from Bowdoin college, this venerable car hop is quick and efficient. You can eat inside and I would highly recommend that or at least at a picnic table. The menu is faded and, for some reason, the restaurant features a BLT made from Canadian bacon. Unless you're a fan, I would avoid it since the point of a BLT is the crisp bacon that offsets the rest of the ingredients. The last few visits we have become fans of the haddock dinner and you can opt out of boring fries for delicious onion rings. Service isn't exactly all hugs and kisses but does get the job done. The servers at Cameron's down the street are much friendlier. Thumbs down for the tartar sauce from Ken's. Cole Slaw is pretty decent. Don't drive off with the squeeze bottle of ketchup though. And be prepared to take pics of the awesome sky over BNAS. All that open space creates some great photo opportunities. Cash only but ATM inside.

Great nostalgic 50s style drive-in. Based on previous reviews, I tried the lobster roll, onion rings and a vanilla frappe. So good! The lobster roll is very modestly priced and very tasty. Due to the price, it is a bit smaller than average, but it is a nice sandwich. It has more mayo than usual, which I actually liked, but if that bothers you, be warned. The onion rings were perfect; crispy, with no separation of onion and batter when you bite into them. One sip of the vanilla frappe rocketed me back to childhood and I was lost in its creamy goodness. They have MANY flavors to choose from, and you can even create your own by mixing the flavors, so you 're sure to find your own frozen bliss.

What a fun place to eat. Have been so many many times and finally am writing a review. The staff is always nice and friendly and do a great job. Their BLT is so good as is the fried shrimp and anything. I just tried their fried green beans and they were wonderful. This place is the greatest for a good inexpensive lunch. I love having to go to Brunswick cause I know there's a great meal waiting at Fat Boy Drive In. I prefer to eat inside, have eaten outside and been warned by the waitress to be careful the sea gull who is perched on the sign or the roof doesn't steal any food left on the tray. Drives my dog nuts when the gull flies so close and is good for a laugh.

Everything he said/she said. Total throwback, like where can you go to a drive in nowadays? The food is what you should expect at this type of place, greasy and frappy and whatnot, but as long as you're down, you have nothing to complain about.

I've been eating here for 30+ years and it's always yummy. The service is wonderful-- I always eat in my car (never inside). I prefer their lobster roll's to the famous Red's. They're smaller but delicious and you won't have to wait hours or deal with crowds. Order 2 rolls if you have to. Hands down the BEST onion rings I've ever had. They're not the super thick battered kind, but lighter and perfectly crunchy. And don't forget to get a frappe. Fat Boy's makes them old-fashioned thick with any combination of flavors (my fav is mocha & banana). You might gain 10 pounds after eating here, but it's SO worth it! Lights on for service!

This place is a blast from the past where the waitresses come out to your car to take your order. It's one of a couple drive up diners in the area but this one is my favorite. They have the standard fried food fare, as well a nice selection of seafood. Their onion rings are particularly good. I've also heard great things about the milkshakes but I've never tried one. Always been too full from the deep fried goodness. This is a nice place to go before catching a show at Maine State Music Theatre which is down the street a bit.

I'm kind of personally offended by any rating of less than 5 stars. Every spring, locals count down until Fat Boy's opening day. In high school we used to skip out on study hall to go get frappes the first week they were open. There's actually another drive in diner down the road, and their parking lot will always be empty even when Fat Boy's is packed. And, they actually have the best fried clams I've ever found.

A really cool local attraction and 50's throwback of time. Love the homemade onion rings. Yummy! The car service is a really nice service on a wet and cold day.

I've traveled all around the US, much of it by car, and I can say that Fat Boy really is one of a kind. I find it kind of unusual that there's another drive in just down the road, but Fat Boy has always had a special place in my heart. Where else do you put on your lights to order and hang a tray from your car window? Not even Sonic does that. Aesthetics and history aside, the food here is really good. They could slack off and charge high prices for lousy food, and probably still be loved by many, but to their credit, the prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. Their burgers are west-coast style, with thin patties and toasted buns - they may be second only to In-N-Out. The fries are the crinkle-cut kind, and the onion rings are thin slices of onion with deliciously flaky batter. The Maine shrimp basket is a steal at $7 and change - for that you get a decent sized portion of sweet, tiny battered shrimp, some fries, a toasted roll and I believe cole slaw. Other folks I've gone with say the lobster and crab rolls, while not huge, are satisfying and big enough considering the price. The frappes here are famous - I go for chocolate, but my mom swears by the mocha frappe. Word to the wise - if you order a soda, order a size larger than you normally do. While most chains have super-sized their soda sizes, Fat Boy's small remains vestigially tiny. It's too bad their gorgeous carnival-esque sign was blown down a few years ago, as its replacement lacks the pizazz of the original.

Reds Eats got the award for best lobster roll. Personally Fat Boys smokes them, not only are they bigger and tastier than anywhere else but they also only $5.00 frappes and burgers are also delicious. My summers growing up in Maine consisted of beach days at Popham and late lunch at Fat Boys Drive Inn

Good comfort food that doesn't require getting out of your car. I came here a lot during my childhood years. I can't really remember the last time I was here, which was years ago, but this place always gave me some good quality fast food. Don't come here expecting health food, with it's name, you'd be a fool if you do. Burgers are great for their own reason...not your typical burger joint. Great Frappes.

OMG, how I miss this place! I still have all my Fat Boy t-shirts! Discovered it in 1993 when moved to Maine, and ate there at least once a week all summer, every summer. Hubby and I used to have a standing date, every Thurs afternoon we would race to Fat Boys (wonder if my fave waitress Theresa is still there?) We were lucky to have our kind of jobs, and could take off early....we would meet at 3pm and then we would go over to Cooks Corner Theater and catch the 4pm showing of whatever movie was brand new. It was awesome becuz we used to have the theater all to ourselves, and were so satiated from our delicious meal! I have NEVER found a place that compares to my beloved Fat Boys. We now live in CT and Thanks to yelp and Roadfood.com , have discovered a couple of potential 'close' experiences I cannot wait to try (altho only one of them has car hop service)....but they, unlike Fat Boy, are open year round! ahhhh, Fat boy burgers were awesome, the crinkle cut fries were perfect and the freakin ONION RINGS were the best. Not greasy at all! and the Frappes were great too (so happy so see another reviewer calling them frappes. I have lived outside New England for the past few yrs and no one ever heard that term! lol) Even their Chicken Sandwiches were great.....and the FISH sandwiches are fantastic too! I NEVER, in at least 50+ experiences, never had a bad meal! Go there, go there now! The people who work there are awesome....they will get to know you and treat you wonderfully! The food is an ICON of the area! I miss my beloved Fat Boy! If anyone knows of any places in CT that remind you of Fat Boy (hey, you never know who will stumble on your yelps!) or even places in Western Ma/Rte 91 area.....let me know! I long for these types of wonderful delicious burgers, fries and rings! ps. If u are in Maine and reading this, if u head up Rte 1 towards Waldeboro, you must try Moody's DIner, they are great too! Different experience (and they have breffie...hmm, will need to yelp them too!)

OH Boy, I get Fatter just driving by this place. Love their burgers and their Cripsy Chicken sandwich. Good fries, better onion rings. Known for their BLTs. Great service and atmosphere. Not a place to keep your weight down as is evident by the name. Closed late fall - early spring.

My go to hangover food. After a long night of partying my friends and I'd head here the next day, in our cars, with sunglasses on and in need of greasy food. I would say its not a place to go if you want to stick to your diet. If you miss the comfort of drive ins, juicu burgers and a cadre of hungover college students--this is your place.

Love Fat Boy's for their cheap food and Americana decor. The burgers are delish and hit the spot when all you really want is a greasy burger with some fries. Onion rings and seafood are good too. Not for calorie counters, but hey, good food at a great price. There's a soft serve ice cream place next door to top off the meal.

I've been coming to Fat Boy since I was little and it remains a summer classic in my mind. Their prices are honestly unbeatable, the service is prompt and friendly, and the food comes in large portions and lots of grease (in the best way possible.) Plus, it's the one place I can go in my PJs and not feel guilty :P
