Two stars might be generous, but at least the place was clean (decor is not nearly as dated and kitschy as others indicate; the place is actually kind of "nice" but certainly not elegant). We pulled into Baldwin's after being thwarted in several other attempts to find a good plate of steamed blue crabs from Florida to Baltimore. Sorry, despite the giant crab on their sign, and a menu highlighting their famous specialty steamed blue crabs, Baldwin's couldn't deliver, either. To be perfectly honest, I don't believe they EVER have steamed blue crabs. It's not the kind of place in which I can picture a big water tank full of live crabs in the kitchen...it's more like a brightly-lit Friendy's family restaurant -- with a big bar in the middle. We quickly realized we had stumbled across Baldwin's a couple of years ago on a drive up I-95; they had no crabs then, either, but that time we were told it was because it was late (8:00 pm). We weren't late this time; it was only barely 5:00, but still the place was empty except for one other table. The bar was empty, and our server appeared to be the only employee in the place. She could have been cooking, too, for all we know. There were crab cakes (creamy "Imperial," or lump crab, broiled or fried), crab sandwiches, crab this, crab that...just no actual crabs. Also available is the usual assortment of fried stuff; clam strips (no whole bellies), oysters, scallops, fish, etc. Broiled, baked, stuffed (with crab, of course). Tired of looking for a plate of steamed blue crabs within a reasonable distance off of I-95, we gave up our quest and decided to order dinner anyway. Note, it was a Monday. Google and Yelp indicated a well-rated crab place a mile or two down the road from Baldwin's, but it is closed Mondays. The menu offered a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. I asked if I could have it topped with a crab cake instead, a wonderful combo I've had at several other restaurants, seafood and non-seafood alike. No go. "No alterations to anything on the menu...but that sounds good!" our server told me. She suggested I order a plain Caesar salad, and my wife order the two crab cake dinner...fine, let's do that. The dinner came with two sides; my wife selected creamed spinach -- oh, sorry, we're out of that -- at 5:00? Make it green beans and stewed tomatoes. I also ordered a cup of crab chowder (soup-like, rather than the also-available bisque). Our meals arrived, but my soup had been forgotten. The Caesar salad was good enough. Fresh, crisp, but otherwise pretty ordinary...the hot crab cake on top would be a nice addition. We ordered the cakes broiled, and they were done nicely. But, and this is a big but for a place supposedly specializing in crab, they were neither "cakes" nor the lump crab as advertised. They were shaped as if molded in a muffin tin, and the crab meat was clearly of the canned variety, more shredded than lump. That said, there was plenty of crab and little breading. That's good. They were hot and broiled perfectly, but not much in the way of seasoning. They were served on a small bed of lettuce. The two side dishes were pretty pathetic. Small cafeteria bowls, one with obviously canned green beans, and stewed tomatoes that more closely resembled spaghetti sauce; thick and pasty, super-sweet instead of spiced. Pretty much inedible. I did get my crab soup, and it was delicious, if a bit heavy on the Old Bay. But I love Old Bay, and I really liked this soup. I only wish I had ordered a bowl instead of a cup, because it was the highlight of the meal. So basically, a cup if soup, two crab cakes and a Caesar salad cost us $44, with iced tea, no booze. We won't be making the mistake of dropping into Baldwin's a third time.

Mmmmm crab alfredo. Im a sucker for crab, and I'm a sucker for alfredo. Make them delicious, and together, and over fettucine... yep, I'm good to go. Also, huge serving, I'm a little upset I forgot to take my leftovers out of my family's fridge in the morning before I left. For some perspective on how much I enjoyed the alfredo, I am lactose intolerant and didn't have a pill... I wanted it too much to care. I recently discovered that hard cider with a shot of whiskey is delicious, I spotted they had honey whiskey and after asking the bartender, she whipped it together for me. There was live music going on that night too which was a lot of fun, if a little loud.

Inexplicably went here for their brunch buffet ($13.95), and what an odd assortment it was. They offer some standard breakfast fare, like french toast, bacon, and creamed chipped beef, but also among the chaffing dishes are rotisserie chicken (???), ribs, and macaroni and cheese (which I'm pretty sure was Stouffer's). While I can't say I'd recommend this place to anyone for brunch (there was maybe a hiccup of champagne in my mimosa), my cousin said that his burger from the standard menu was pretty good...so maybe lunch is alright?

Let me start by saying I do NOT eat seafood. So bypass my review if you must. Now, with that out of the way I'll tell you my experience. My husband and I went here with a couple friends last night on a whim. There were only 3 tables with customers in the whole restaurant on a Friday night at 6pm. This I love since we have a quite rambunctious one year old... They all ordered seafood (crab balls, oysters, Chesapeake chicken) and I had the Fettuccine Alfredo (and mozzarella sticks to start.) Everyone enjoyed their meal. Do be warned if you venture to the Fettuccine Alfredo, there is enough sauce to bathe yourself in... But it was good, regardless. The service was friendly and prompt.

Great place. We stopped here for luch and it was very good. Nice setting, excellent service, delicious food.

Omg got the seafood sampler, all low quality Sisco food. Got crabs to go that were supposed to be the largest $76 per dozen and I'm not sure they were even legal size. We had 2 rail drinks each. So add it up. Seafood sampler, 4 rail drinks 1/2 dozen crabs to go and 2 pieces of pie a whopping $116 bucks. Please find another place .

This place is amazing. We stopped here on a whim and understand why all the diners here are locals! Huge steamed crabs. I got the 2 lump crab cake special and it is so many huge flakes maybe 10% crackers and 90% crab? They have a formal dining room and also offer the full menu in the very relaxed lounge (where there are great beers on tap and 2 big sports TVs). This Texas girl was very pleased

Don't waste your time with this place. Got crabs that were meds but are really smalls. The waitress was nice but never around had to go to the bar to get my drink multiple times. The crabs were cooked shitty and not worth the price. Never wasting my time or money with this place again. I understand it's Father's Day but don't have 1 waitress for the whole damn place. Sucks I have to pay for this meal.

We are new to the area and was recommended to eat here. We ordered several different menu items, ranging from surf and turn. The only palatable item was the steak. Several of us had upset stomachs overnight. I vomitted the BBQ Pork sandwich and crab. Clean and presentable interior, looks can be deceiving.

Actually this is a review of trying to make a reservation and getting put on hold...except she put the phone down and I could hear her talking to someone for about ten minutes. The guy finally said to her "Isn't there someone still on the phone" and then she picked it back up and asked what I wanted. A shame, I've eaten here before (It was ok, slightly overpriced but worth a second try). Not again.

I stop by once every two weeks or so cause I only live about a mile away. Usually just to grab a beer at the bar area and have a bite to eat after work. So far I haven't been disappointed by the food or service. The fried crab fluff is amazing in my opinion and their salads are pretty great. The only real negative is that the prices are a bit much for what you get and they don't really give you side dishes for your meal. They used too give you homemade potato chips with most of their items but now they charge you for them as an add on. Seems a bit silly.... Overall I would recommend it but be prepared to spend about $30-$40 a person if your having drinks with your meal.

Hubby and i live just around the corner. we tried it once and was really unimpressed. Just not good at all. Don't think we will even give it a second try (which is unusual for us)

This is a local, hometown place. Wood paneling on the walls, cheesy cover band in the lounge. It's totally the kind of local dive I'd frequent if I lived near by. I'm a vegetarian, so there's not much on the menu for me, but my companions indulged in the fish. The crab cake and flounder looked good, my sister said the crabs were small and a lot of work to get meat out of. My grilled cheese was just fine, and the fries were dee-licious.
(3)Keith W.
Suprisingly this quasi-dive was not so bad. I ordered the steak sandwich (beware it is really a cheese steak misrepresented) and it was flavorful. Beers were only $1, can't beat that. I went in a large group and the overall feel was that this was a good decision. I would have liked to have gotten crabs but they were not in season.

Fantastic!! Soft crab sandwich to die for!! Perfectly sautéed & crispy ;-) wonderful Md crab soup. Very clean particularly the bathroom. Used Yelp to find a place after shopping at the Amish Market. Good thing I ignored the other reviews because it was great ;-)also sampled some French fries clearly cooked in peanut oil, Yummo!! Great server lots of advice n help. TRY THEM OUT! No steamed crabs though, I heard them responding to calls. Apologizing for no crabs. Would definitely go again.

"Horrible. I couldn't even finish the crab cake sandwich. Even the water was undrinkable. I will never eat there again.

Fantastic seafood. If you want Maryland Seafood in a real Maryland Seafood place, come here.
(5)Leanne S.
Since this is a seafood restaurant, I found it interesting that the previous reviews were written by a seafood hater, a vegetarian, and a person who wanted a steak sandwich. My husband and I came across this place on a trip from DC to NJ, and loved it. I had the deluxe crab cake - so good - not breaded, moist and delish. My husband had flounder stuffed with crab imperial, with a cheese topping. It was well-prepared and moist with a good flavor. We were given piping hot corn bread muffins The service was excellent. Judging by how crowded it was when we left, others like it as well as we did. I did drop it one star because it is a bit pricy.

I was there recently and ordered the surf and turf. The lobster tail was barely warm while the medium-well steak was overdone to the point of toughness. Service was below average. It used to be a good place but it seems to be going downhill. I'm going to go elsewhere for a few years before I try them again.

We have often gone to Baldwin's, which has been a crab house for many decades on Rt. 40 and has recently remodeled and upgraded. However, when we took a tablefull of out-of-town guests there to experience Maryland crabs on Aug. 4, they only had small/medium crabs according to the waitress; but we had called at 5 PM and they said they had large, and it was only 7 PM. And the crabs were what I'd call small, no mediums even. This is the second time this has happened, that we've gone in for good crabs and they only had little ones. I think if Baldwin's is a crab place, they should actually buy enough crabs. They may be trying to expand to be a regular restaurant; they have a large menu. Trying to be both may not be working. The waitress, an Oriental girl, was sullen and neglectful. Didn't bring tableware till well after the food started coming, refused an American Express card curtly. Worrying. I guess we'll look for another crab restaurant now, and if we go back to Baldwin's call up about the crabs right before we leave home and if they don't have the larger sizes when we get there, go elsewhere. The crabs are well-flavored, and it's nearby; I'd like to eat there, but I don't want little tiny crabs.

This was a very disappointing visit. I found out today that Baldwin's drastically changed their daily lunch specials. I brought my family for lunch today because Thursdays used to be Steak Sandwich day, but not only do they not offer the Steak Sandwich as a special any longer, Baldwin's also decreased the quality to a chopped and formed steak similar to Steak-Ums instead of a quality piece of beef. The M-F lunch specials used to be a different daily sandwich served with chips and a cup of their vegetable crab soup. So not only are the daily special sandwiches gone, but so is the cup of soup with the sandwich. The lunch special now consists of a 6-item lunch menu that does not change. The first 4 items are a reasonable price, but the last two are pretty pricey for a lunch special. Baldwins still offers their cheeseburger as a lunch special, but that is the only original daily special still on the lunch special menu. Today I had a bowl of their vegetable crab soup; my wife had their grilled chicken breast sandwich, my daughter had a BLT, and my son had the fried shrimp plate. The vegetable crab soup (Regular Menu item) had way too much Old Bay (Crab Boil for non-Marylanders) and way too little crab meat. It seems to me that the soup used to have a lot more crab meat than what they served me today. The soup still is chock full of vegetables. My wife's grilled chicken sandwich (Regular Menu item, but used to be the Friday lunch special) is still absolutely fantastic, both in taste and value. The chicken breast is slightly flattened to fit a large kaiser roll, seasoned and grilled to perfection. The meat is tender and juicy. The sandwich is big enough to share. Regular menu sandwiches come with chips. My daughter said her BLT (daily lunch special) was good. I asked her about the bacon and she could only tell me that there was bacon and that it was not sticking out of the sandwich. The BLT comes with fresh boardwalk fries. These were fantastic. My son had the fried shrimp plate w/ boardwalk fries (regular menu item). I tried one of his shrimp. The shrimp, while on the smaller size (abt 35-40 count/lb) was tender and crispy with a good flavor (so they do change their deep fryer oil regularly). Again the fries are fantastic. The waitress/hostess (same person), was upfront and honest about the menu changes, because I told her we had come today for the steak sandwich lunch special. I had one minor problem with her, as she was serving our food, she spilled a significant amount of my soup into the plate carrying the bowl. Instead of just taking it back and offering to refill the bowl, she served it anyway and made me ask her to fill it. Last fall the owner dropped the cup of soup off the lunch special and a group of us there that day told him we would rather pay and extra dollar for lunch because the cup of vegetable crab soup is what made the special special, but that was before they decreased the amount of crab in the soup. I used to dine here 4 to 6 times per month to get their different daily lunch specials (M- burger, Th- Steak sandwich, Fr- Chicken sandwich). I will still go, but not as often as before. Real lunch items are $$ and dinner items are $$$ Oh, prior to the menu change I would have rated lunch with 4-stars

I got the crab cake sandwich on the way home. It was served with potato chips - really who serves potato chips with crab cakes. Shame, because their fries are really good. The actual crab cake was good. I would go back, until I find a better crab cake sandwich. I would say it is about 5-6 oz, compared to G&Ms and Timbuktu, it is noticeably small and they serve it on a huge Kaiser roll.

Okay. The place is like a Harford County staple for crabs, and yeah, they have them. But what they also have is an employee in the kitchen- a cook- who acts like she owns the place and here's why I wont spend another dime at Baldwin's... I placed an order with a girl named Michele. It was fairly busy, so I expected a bit of a wait, no big deal. I noticed though, that while I'm patiently waiting for my simple order of steamed shrimp and a salad, a table of 4 that came in like 15 minutes after me are munching away on their food already. This pissed me off enough to look around and see two other tables in the same area of the restaurant, who both came in after me are already eating too. Now I know Michele put in the order immediately cuz Im sitting at the bar and she read it to me as she entered it into the POS system and pushed the "go" button. Plus, after I got tweaked when I saw the first bunch of people served before me, I had Michele check to make sure my order went in...and it did. I observe that the same waitress is responsible for the tables being served before me, and since I have nothing else to do because I still have no food, i watch yet ANOTHER table belonging to this waitress be served before not only me, but several others in the restaurant who were there first as well. Obviously, this other waitress is able to get the food out quickly to her tables, while the rest of us wait, so I ask what the deal is with THAT. I mean, my money's just as green, rIght? Here's what i'm told...the waitress is the daughter of a cook, and it would appear that the cook makes sure baby girl gets her tables turned at warp speed. This kind of crap does not give me a buzz. In speaking to other staff and several other customers- cuz I'm STILL waiting and more agro by the minute- it seems as though this is okey-dokey with the owners and management. Joe Blow waits while those being served by a cooks kid get to have their cake and eat it too... Ain't that a bitch and a half...me and my money will hoof it on over to Joe's crab Shack over by Wegmans in Abingdon. You had your chance, but when you let the inmates run the assylum, you prove you no longer deserve my business. Buh bye Baldwin's,,,

I realize this is a seafood restaurant, but there is little else on the menu. I hate seafood and ended up here with some friends. I ate a bowl of soup and a whole basket of crackers, as nothing else on the menu appealed to me. The prices are high, the decor is outdated and kitchy, and from what I saw, their patrons were almost all older people (not a place for the 20s crowd). Not impressed at all - if you aren't a fan of seafood, steer clear.

This used to be a favorite. It seems to have gone downhill. I don't drink at bars, but the bar is very nice, new, big and sometimes features live music. The crabs are OK, but usually quite expensive. The menu is not very large and the prices have gone up (as they have just about everywhere). I like the dining room in the winter when the fireplaces are on. They make outstanding onion soup. Their crabcakes look like they are made in muffin tins, but they taste OK. Not exceptional, but OK. It's not the best place for crabs, but not the worst either. The desserts are enormous. The photos are of the bar area, which is relatively new.
