I'm surprised at the negative reviews of Roppongi. I go here a couple of times a year with my mother and we have always had positives experiences. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. Out of all the sushi restaurants in Frederick, what they serve here tastes best. I like the menu - it is not overly complicated, but there are still some unique options listed. I definitely feel like I get my money's worth. Service is somewhat slow. We don't mind because we take our time and enjoy ourselves, but if you're looking for a quick bite then I would suggest ordering over the phone and picking up your order. We have always had the same waitress - I believe she is one of the owners - and she has always been friendly with us. All in all, a lovely place!

Although I never actually visited his restaurant, but growing up as his nephew, I have tasted his food when I was young - to my delight. I can tell you that Danny Ko is an extremely talented chef (also gifted in other areas as well) and I'd highly recommend his restaurant!

Sushi is still up to par but over time they have become run down and their dishes are horrible now and the tea isnt the same and the miso soup is watered down. Don't expect a good eat unless you're only getting sushi. I got the teriyaki chicken and the sauce was so flavorless the price on the dish isn't worth the dissatisfaction.

I love sushi but can't handle too much rice. When letting the sushi chef/owner know, he introduced the Temaki roll -shaped like a waffle come with just veggies. I had a Spicy Yellowtail and Tuna made this way. DELICIOUS! Although it lacks ambiance, this small hole in the wall has the better quality sushi than I've had anywhere in Frederick.

Regular here. Not your typical Chinese owned, Chinese workers, Japanese named restaurant. This is real deal. Authentic Japanese food. Feel free to order off menu. Owners are Japanese so they know what Japanese food is, unlike the copy cats. Thus far, this is the only real Japanese restaurant in Frederick.

Best sushi I've ever had, hands down, ESPECIALLY the eel! The very friendly owner came by our table as we waited for our meal, and told us all about where they get their ingredients from, and all sorts of other stuff. Now I live in Milwaukee and wish I'd gone to Roppongi more often!

Vile the worst sushi , no the worst restaurant I have eaten at in years... .First sushi is about the rice here it's over cooked under seasoned sour mush.. the fish was warm and tasted just on the edge of spoiled even the soy sauce was nasty watered down generic garbage.. I also ordered a spider roll only to get a blob of ultra greasy fried batter shaped sorta like a soft shell crab might , only to find after spitting the nasty clump of rancid greasy batter out onto my plate that it contained no soft shell crab there were however some tiny flecks of non batter material of unknown origin that the owner insisted were soft shell crab..bottom line after about three bites that I regret taking I left the remaining swill on the stupid sushi boat and left..AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST.

I don't eat sashimi or raw sushi so this review is solely for the veggie options only. I love the sushi here, everything I've tried has always been super fresh; the staff is very nice and attentive. To make it all better, the sushi chef is very quick so it's never an extremely long wait. Deff a hidden sushi gem, forget about the other over priced sushi joints; this is the real deal here.

For sushi in Maryland this place is fantastic! My favorites include the quail egg, tuna nigiri and spider roll! The frederick roll has crab, abovado and eel - also a must try!

Haven't been here in a while, but glad I came back. This really is the best sushi in Frederick. Also, the staff remembered me despite the fact it has been well over a year since I last ate there.

This is by far the best sushi in the area. The place is tiny and tucked behind Taco Bell in a strip mall. The decor is adorably tacky, but the employees are the Real Thing. Service is excellent and the sushi chef is amazing. Ask him to make you a platter of his choice. It will blow your mind!

Recently or somewhat recently moving to back to the Frederick area there of course have been some adjustments, traffic on 270, traffic on 15, and probably one of the most difficult was finding myself so far away from Yoyogi! Coming to terms with the fact that there isn't any good sushi in Frederick has been difficult! Well I stand corrected....tried Roppongi for the first time a week ago and it was great! This is the first on the list as far as branching out and trying Frederick area sushi and I was pleasantly surprised. The prices were great and the quality good as well. We ordered from the road so trying to navigate the menu/options was a little difficult but everything we got was great. Philly roll, spicy tuna, salmon roll. This was our novice order, but we are ready to dive in next time!

Excellent sushi at a reasonable price. The spider roll (my favorite) was outstanding while the yellowtail maki roll and the shrimp tempura roll were excellent as well. This place Is a great choice for the sushi lover.

I literally ran in there on my way in to ALDI's cause I was seriously craving a salmon and avocado roll. I ordered it to go, and explained I liked more avocado than salmon. Grabbed my stuff at ALDI's and returned to pick up- hit me that it was only $4.50- I'm not sure, but I think the so-so sushi at Giant Eagle and the better but still grocery store Sushi at Wegmans is way more than $4.50. Fresh. Sweet and vinegary perfectly textured rice. Lots of avocado, less salmon (like I asked for) Crispy Nori and heavy on the sesame seeds. Flavorful wasabi paste and fresh tasting ginger. YUM. All eaten on they way home. I'll definetly be back for dinner soon.

This was the worst sushi I've ever had. Seriously. The sushi you can pick up from the deli at Giant Eagle is better than this stuff. I can't imagine what garbage people must eat on the regular to consider this good.

Pros: This restaurant is very authentic; it is run by a husband and wife who are very diligent and attentive. The ingredients were very fresh and the prices were fair for the portion size. The atmosphere was very relaxing; it is a cozy small establishment. The service was fast; we were not waiting for our order for more than 10 minutes, though there were not many customers at the time. All sushi orders were presented on a boat, which we thought was very cute. Cons: The menu wasn't too creative or extensive, and the rolls were small. Recommendation: We would definitely go again for the fresh inexpensive taste of sushi. We would suggest this restaurant to anyone who likes classic sushi rolls and a light meal

I've eaten here twice. The first time, the sushi was amazing. Good portion sizes, fresh flavors. The second time wasn't a disaster. It was just average. The sushi didn't leave nearly as big of an impression on me as it did the first time. I'd likely give it three stars on food alone, but as others have stated, the service here is awful. We spent more time sitting around and waiting on things than we spent eating. Waiting on food, waiting on drinks, waiting on the bill. We spent nearly 2 hours in this place each time, during business lunches. The food's just not worth the wait.

This place is awesome. Best fish in Frederick the owners are very picky. Don't really like rolls with thirty things in them covered in sauce so I can only vouch for the traditional nigiri and sushi rolls. Service is not the best but that kind of adds to the whole charm of the experience. There is currently Japanese disco music playing which is what drove this review to five stars. Seriously though eat here.

Let's just say it: Frederick isn't a sushi town. Most Japanese places are of the steak house variety, except for the merely adequate Hinode - the same as the one in Bethesda and Rockville, except they dumbed down the menu for Frederick diners and Sushi Densha, which is great for the buffet lunch, but comes up short for dinner. The sign for Roppongi reads "Frederick's Best Sushi" and I might concur, although best sushi in Frederick is like being the world's tallest midget. The food is actually pretty good (portions are rather small, thereby affecting the overall value), but the service is.. let's just call it strange. I can't say I've ever felt super welcome in this place. Others have complained about slow service, but at least I haven't experienced that. The matriarch of the family that owns it is by far the friendliest one there, but her English is very limited so it's hard to communicate with her. It's a small restaurant but could use a makeover to make it a little more appealing. Overall, the food isn't outstanding, but is perfectly fine. It's the overall feel of the restaurant that doesn't make it among the tops of my Frederick list. When I want sushi for dinner, I head straight to Yuraku or EN Bistro in Germantown. Frederick's sushi just doesn't cut it, much to my dismay.

I hate leaving negative reviews but after dinner last night we were just not impressed. The spicy tuna was decent, not creamy like they often are with decent quality tuna but it just lacked something. We also ordered gyoza (delicious), katsudon (I loved it, my husband wasn't impressed), miso soup (delicious!), salad (very good, light dressing) and a dragon roll. The eel was mushy and I've never had a dragon roll that has fake crab in the center. It wasn't on the menu that it was in there, otherwise I wouldn't have ordered it. Again, might be my west coast sensibilities but I ended up only eating 1 piece. I prefer my eel, especially because of the skin, to be crispy. As mentioned in other reviews, service is incredibly slow. Our waitress disappeared a lot and the sushi chef came out to set down a take out order and ended up taking our drinks back to refill them. After she saw we were clearly ready to go, she still came out and picked up all the soy containers and took them back before getting our bill. I might have given 3 stars if only for the food I did enjoy but the service knocked it down.

We were the only customers in the restaurant. Thought it was from the weather but should have seen that as a sign. Service was horrible Fish was barely cool not cold. Am thankful only that I didn't get sick. Will never go there again

They didn't get 5 stars because the service can be so slow here. But I was shocked to find good sushi in Frederick. Extra bonus was that it was right by my gym (which I went to regularly at 3am and never had an issue with safety. Not the BEST neighborhood right behind the shopping center but I never worried about going there). Some damn good sashimi here. And even though the service is slow the people are nice and it's a very cozy atmosphere to dine. Definitely check em out!

This place kicks the crap out of all the other sushi in Frederick. Yes, I know that isn't hard to do - but seriously, its great. Always SUPER fresh, well made, beautifully presented and delicious. I love their salmon rolls - an inside out roll with white sesame seeds, yummy fresh salmon, and avocado. The restaurant itself doesnt have the most amazing ambience - its small, dark, and a little dated - but its clean and well maintained and the sushi is so good, who cares? I just get takeout most of the time, but I live with a bunch of dirty sushi-haters. They clearly just haven't had Roppongi. The shopping center its in has been remodeled recently, and alot of new tenants are moving in. There was alot of activity when I last visited, mostly at the Aldi, Planet Fitness, and Martial Arts studio. Definately not the rundown ghost town it used to be. I didn't feel unsafe there at all.. come on people.. its FREDERICK.

Without doubt, Roppongi has some of the best sushi in Frederick. The presentation is nice, the food is delicious, and I really enjoy the aesthetics of the place. It's a nice setting for a quiet, intimate dinner with a date or a small group of friends. Here's my beef: the service is atrociously slow. I don't understand why it takes 45 minutes to make two rolls of sushi, especially when there's only one other table occupied in the place. The first time I went, our server seemed to find us irritating and was very short in answering our questions about the menu. The most recent time, our server didn't know what several items on the menu consisted of and had to get the chef out to answer. She forgot to refill our drinks... throughout the meal... we had to flag down the hostess. And one of our orders was completely wrong and had to be redone- octopus instead of eel. Our server WAS very nice, just the service was pretty flaky. Overall, the food is great and worth a trip. But the service makes the experience much less enjoyable... so I don't go out of my way too often. Especially when there are cheaper sushi joints in town that may not have as delicious sushi, but better service.

I'm a huge sushi connoisseur, having lived off of it in Japan, so I'm pretty tough to please when it comes to sushi. This place is top shelf, baby. From my end of things, I have always had top notch sushi here. I think sushi can be very subjective when it comes to who makes it, and when, so I'm lucky I suppose that the owner, a native Japanese who has been trained as a professional sushi chef is there. I do have to stumble a bit when I say the service can be a tad slow at times, even when trying to pay the bill, but then again the atmosphere is very laid back as well. I will also note that I am impressed with them enough to have had them cater two of my photographic gallery exhibits on Japan to mark the occasion.

I know it not the best sushi, but it's the place that started my love of all things rolled. The quality is really pretty decent, sure the service can be a little slow, but my husband and I know that we can get a table on Friday night with no wait. It's quaint and I like that.

I like the sushi and the sashimi at Roppongi. That's all I order. I have not been impressed with the other food. Service is friendly. The main problem with Roppongi is its location. I don't think it's safe up there on Hillcrest.

Either the others reviewing this restaurant have never been exposed to real sushi or I'm just way too picky, but there are definitely better sushi joints in Frederick...Wegman's Grocery Store, for example. My one and only experience in this restaurant was one too many. The sushi was warm, the rice was hard, the selection was limited, the location was awful, and the service was worse. After leaving behind over half of the order my wife and I placed, we had to wait almost a half hour to receive the bill...even after we requested it. Seriously, for those of you used to GOOD sushi, stay away from this place, and for those of you praising the awesomeness of this establishment, I hear the Chinese buffets in town do an awesome tuna roll!! Seriously?!

Having had many good sushi experiences at DC's Sushi-Ko, I know what I like. And, frankly, I'm just glad there IS a sushi place in Frederick. When I'm in the neighborhood, I always have the spicy shrimp tempura roll -- love it. And my dinner companion raves about the terriyaki roll. Yes, it's true: the strip-mall location isn't stellar, and neither, perhaps, is the ambiance (a problem solved by doing take-out). But the staff is always very polite and friendly. I have had some communication issues, which I've learned to overcome by repeating the order and checking the bag if I'm doing take-out.

Best kept secret in Frederick. You will not find fresher sushi unless you go out and catch it yourself. If you go here be forewarned, you will not be able to eat sushi anywhere else.

Roppongi is one of the better sushi places in the area. The fish is always fresh and the fish to rice ratio is awesome. The owner and sushi chef is from Japan and speaks ok english. Do not expect fast service. Most days they are not that busy and if you are polite any patient, you will enjoy this place. I went there again today and had a great conversation about Japanese martial arts with the owner/sushi chef. He is very friendly if you are patient and friendly. I have never had an issue with the service and I've always had quality sushi.

The environment is nice. The sushi is ok but for some reason I feel it's bland compared to other places. The prices are too high for the location and they don't give free pieces to try like many other places do. I've been hesitant to go there regularly mostly because of the sushi chef, who in my opinion is rude and racist. I made it very clear to him that I don't appreciate ethnic and nationality related questions and that I do not want to discuss my background with him, yet he kept insisting. I had the stupidity to go back and he did the same thing until I threatened to walk out and file a complaint. Only then he stopped. Needless to say, I didn't enjoy the experience. As long as he isn't there, the place is ok.

This is my second time here. I am so disappointment, I order $19.99 dinner set it comes with your choice of beef or chicken or salmon, 6pcs cali roll, 2 dumplings, a side salad, miso soup , assorted Tempura , First she told me the set doesn't come with rice..what kind of lunch or dinner set doesn't come with rice... and I ordered this last time, it comes with rice... Second the beef....was terrible, doesnt even taste like beef like some kind of jerky and is very very hard to chew, I told her this wasnt taste right, she looked at me and showed anger in her face . she said no this is beef steak this is good , i said to her this is not steak, tasted really strange, can i change to chicken ? then she went back to the kitchen, after 5 mins the chef came out with a bowl of couple tiny pcs chicken with broccoli and put the bowl down loudly, i looked at him said thank you, he said..the beef steak is good. when i see the check ...she charged me for $24.95...and I asked her why is it so much. she said it is tips...I was like....... i was there alone i never heard a restaurant charged party for 1 advanced tips.... I am so pissed....left $22. I will never come back......

Some of the best sushi that I have ever had. Roppongi has becone a Friday night dining tradition for my family. The service is friendly and very willing. The sushi chef often will come into the dining room to check on his creations. The strip mall location is more than half empty, but the addition of Aldi and a Planet Fitness may be signs of a revival.

Excellent food and warm service. We had sushi and meals from the lunch menu, and everything was so fresh. We spoke with one of the employees and learned they don't use MSG or extra oil in their cooking. You could really tell the difference! Everything was made freshly while we waited, and we didn't wait that long at all. Sushi was prepared and rolled fresh - not cut from pre-made rolls. Entrees were also superb. Cooked freshly, not pre-cooked and warmed up later. It was so so good and we will definitely return!

This place is great for lunch or a simple, enjoyable meal. I pity their current locations because of how disheartening it much be to now operate out of such a defunct location. The prices aren't the best but the quality is quite good and I overall support this place as being one of the better Asian restaurants (best Japanese?) in the county.

  • justin p.

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars, and since you can't do halfers, I'll go with 4. It usually pretty good. Sometimes the service can seem a little weird and stilted though. The fish is good - probably one of the better places in Frederick. Prices are a little high and the location is out of the way. It's in a strip mall on Route 40 - it used to be a busy strip mall, but over the past decade or so, that part of town has gotten a little shady, and now Roppongi may frequently be the only place open in the whole strip mall at night. So, walking to your car can be creepy, especially when you encounter some of the local gang bangers cutting through the parking lot en route to where ever it is that they are heading from their houses in Hillcrest.
