My husband and I stopped in on a Tuesday evening. It was like stepping into a charming country cottage. The servers are very warm and friendly, and will crack little jokes. For instance, a kind older woman said "relax" as she dropped off my wine and his Stella. The inside is dated, but I love the wooden furniture and quaint country pictures and decor. As other reviewers have mentioned, the clientele is predominately 60+. The wine selection is limited (only the house brand of various types of wine), but I thoroughly enjoyed my pinot grigio. It was sweet but not too sweet. A note on the food. It seems as though it's inspired by 60's cooking, which is a bit heavy on the butter and sugar. The dessert menu features Baked Alaska. I find this comforting, and takes me back to my grandmother's home cooking. The homemade Caesar dressing is delicious. It has bacon and doesn't have the same "bite" that most Caesar dressings have. My husband and I thought this was delicious, but other reviewers seemed not to like it. The homemade rolls were quite good. I had fried shrimp with twice-baked potatoes and coleslaw. The shrimp was off good quality and was cooked perfectly. My husband had a delicious breaded veal with homemade brown gravy, spaetzle, and mixed vegetables. The German chocolate cake for dessert was moist and delicious! I find this place absolutely charming. It feels so nostalgic, and the servers seem genuinely happy. Management is doing something right. It's a bit expensive ($20-$25 per plate), but the food is good. We'll be back!

This restaurant was really good. There was a mixture of ages on Saturday night when we went. It is a quant restaurant that reminds me of Dutch's Daughter prior to their move. The food was excellent and you definitely need to save room for desert. We will be going back as there are a few more menu items I'd like to try.

Three business travelers looking for lunch on the way to a client Yelped this place. Food was fantastic as was the service. Had a "Roasted Turkey Dinner" that put Thanksgiving to shame, and desserts that are just like mom's. Down home feel and excellent prices to boot. 5 stars!

It's supposed to be a steak place?! We went for steak but was so disappointed. First there wasn't much to choose from. Waiter told us they forgot to put the steak in. Then came back and asked what our order was again. Steak came out long after we waited 40 minutes!! The decor is so dated and the waitress uniforms are weird. It's an old people's hang out spot. We never went back.

The food was dry, plain and boring. But food portion was generous. The rest will be up to you to find out since some people like that type of food. This place maybe focused toward senior customers. I would not recommend this place for younger crowd.

So by chance one night, my boyfriend and I decided to go to this restaurant (based on reviews from here) and we were very very impressed. :) The food was excellent and the staff was extrememly courteous and professional!! I got the Chicken Cordon Bleu which was divine~ The riesling was of course delicious as well! I hightly reccommend this place. Oh and as someone mentioned before, the clientele there is rather "mature" in age. My boyfriend and I were the youngest but hey, that ain't a bad feeling! ;)

Surprising... thought I was going to be going to an old restaurant and found a charming quaint bavarian bistro with excellent food, ambiance and service. Somewhat seems like a step back in time, definitely not a chique modern hip place to be seen, but a genuinely warm, rustic, place for food prepared the way your parents and their parents served a family meal.

Hubby and I went on a whim. Folks were super friendly - attentive, but not annoying service. Food was great. My husband had the Yankee Pot Roast, which was delicious and I had the Brats, which were also wonderful. Portions are large - no room for dessert and plenty for lunch tomorrow! Edited to add - just had leftovers for lunch - OMG - scrumptious!

Come for your grandparents, stay for the food. Gladchuk's is refreshing, in that it doesn't seem to hide what it is. Both it's menu and it's aesthetic blatantly appeal to its primary audience, senior citizens. This DOES NOT, however, subtract from the quality of their food. While many of my grandparents favorite restaurants offer little more than cafeteria quality fare, this place holds themselves to a standard reflective of the era they seem to represent. My only advice is to order meat one temperature lower than you normally would, as their clientele generally prefers a crispier cut of beef. Through traditional dishes, homemade deserts, and fresh pressed uniforms, Gladchuk's really seems like the kind of place Bing Crosby would have wanted to open in his retirement. Check it out, regardless of your AARP eligibility.

A very dissapointing experience. A warm atmosphere, friendly if overworked waitress but the food was a c-. Most of the crowd in their 60's and 70's. I had the one of the specials "pot roast ", what a joke. It was sliced beef covered with dark brown gravy that tasted like out of a jar. It was a 12.95 quality (maybe) that I paid $22 for? Pot roast is also one of the easiest dishes in the world to do well - which makes the sliced tough beef all the more shocking. We asked about wines by the glass "well we have cab/merlot etc. ". So one type of each. The cab and Merlot were both way too sweet - my bride left half of hers on the table . One of the owners was clearly working the room with the regulars but showed no interest in touching base with our table. Very unimpressive food.

My wife and I had received a gift certificate for Gladchuk Bros last winter, and finally decided to stop in when she was asked to scout the place for a business dinner. We had been meaning to go for a while, but always ended up picking another place. The outside of the building reminds me of a cottage, and comes across as warm and inviting. The inside is similar, though a little more dated. It seems as though they cater to an older crowd, as we were the youngest couple in there by about 15 years (just an observation, not a critique). The service was very friendly, but the charm wore off throughout the meal as we found they were not very attentive or efficient. The bread was fresh and tasty, but our salads were mediocre at best (caesar dressing was too sweet). For dinner, I ordered the Veal German with red cabbage and spätzle; my wife got the crab stuffed cod. The veal was smothered in an overly-thickened "rich brown sauce" with too many onions and peppers tossed in. The spätzle (which I love, and part of the reason I ordered this dish) was over-cooked and not seasoned at all. The red cabbage was over-sweetened. As always, the wife and I traded bites...hers seemed better, but not great. She thought the fish was cooked well but under-seasoned,and that the stuffing was light on crab and over-worked. I also ordered an old-fashioned with dinner, which was rail whiskey (not bourbon) over cherries. Beyond the bread, I don't think I can say that anything was really good, though the prices would lead you to believe otherwise. We really wanted to like this place, but don't have any reason to go back.

It's fine but doesn't have a very sophisticated taste for food. Very heavy handed with sauces and salt and butter but to any great end. Atmosphere tries for country Charm but mostly feels old. They treat regulars far better than newbies, too. In a town with a lot of restaurants you can do better.

We've passed this restaurant often, and kept saying we should try it. Being at an event across the street last night, we decided to give it a shot. We walked in to a fairly busy late dinner service. The place definitely looks like it caters to an older clientele, as the predominant age was 45+. The decor is definitely dated, lots of heavy wood and bad carpet. For me, that's not a huge deal, as I'm coming for the food & not the decor. Our waitress was extremely friendly, and we were kind of excited about the menu. Lots of options for tasty bites, and a good variety of German dishes. I decided on one of the specials, the sauerbraten with red cabbage & homemade spaetzel. My boyfriend ordered the German dinner from the regular menu. Our salads came out immediately, letting us know it was prepped ahead. I had the house creamy dressing, and boy am I glad I ordered it on the side. It had the texture of ranch, with a slight pink hue, and sweeter than I'd expect a dessert to be. Strike one. I didn't eat much. Our dinners came out ridiculously quick, once again telling us that the majority was not fresh, or at least it was all pre-prepped. Strike two. We dug in, excited to try this fare. One bite in and I knew it was bad. The red cabbage was crazy sweet, as if they'd dumped sugar into the sauté pan. The meat was not bad, but the sauce on top was congealed, and rang of sugar as well. The spaetzel was overcooked and bland, and took on the flavor of the cabbage next to it. My boyfriend said the sausage flavor was ok, but the texture was off (no crunch to the casing), and while he liked the duchess potato, it was over salted. The waitress noticed that I wasn't eating, and came over to check. I told her my thoughts, and she offered me the menu. She said they were known for seafood, so I ordered the scallops in a lemon butter sauce, with roast potatoes & mixed veg. Again, came out super fast. The sauce was congealed, like the butter was old. The texture was slimy. The scallops themselves were covered in paprika (what?), and overdone & rubbery. Definitely not fresh AT ALL. Strike three. We finished our meal & got out of there, barely crossing the threshold before discussing how awful the meal was. We agreed that nothing tastes fresh, that it seemed microwaved, and that for the prices ($20+ per dish), we expected way more. I'm giving two stars because the service was excellent, but I won't be returning to give them a second chance.

Food is great, the service is very good and prices are reasonable for what you get. The décor is very old though so some people may not like that. You will have to weigh the food and service against the old look and feel. Its definitely worth trying.

Run, don't walk! This place is amazing!! Food is fresh, homemade and prepared with care. The mashed potatoes are REAL, the butterscotch is homemade as are the rolls. The pot roast was ....wait for it......better than mine and I'm a pretty good cook. The pork chops were divine, I only wish I had saved room for pie. Stevie (the younger Gladchuk) is a delight and his dad is the baker. The uncle is the chef.....maybe they would adopt me. What a delightful find! Please support this family business, you won't be sorry.

This place was just awful. I ordered the Black Forest Chicken. I don't know what I was thinking to order a German meal in an Irish restaurant, but how hard is it really to mess up chicken, noodles and veggies? The chicken was bland and smothered in heaps of cherry jelly. The spätzle were served bare without any seasoning or sauce. The mixed veggies tasted like they had just been defrosted out of the freezer. $20 for this meal? What a rip off.

Our second visit to Gladchuks was in celebration of friend's Silver Anniversary and it was another delightful experience. Our friends and I started with glasses of house wine (cabernet, chardonay) and one Berringer all reasonably priced $8-8.50 each. We shared 2 orders of savory fully stuff crab mushrooms swimming in melted butter. I had the egg plant parmesan ($20.95) and it was OK but nothing special although in retrospect it wa not the best selection for me. Two in our party of four choose the baked shrimp with crab meat ($25.75) and they were in seventh heaven claiming that this was the "best stuffed shrimp ever." Another in our party ordered the salmon ($22.95) and it was a hearty portion which one which was described as "well prepared" and also received a most favorable review. We finished the meal off with generous portions of the German Chocolate (it is after all a German restaurant despite the equal number of Italian specialties) and Carrot cakes ($5.75). There is no skimping at Gladchuks. While some reviewers are put off by the restaurant's location and exterior it reminded this reviewer of the years spent in Germany and their restaurants with its heavy wooded look. By the way the waitresses are just whom Hollywood would cast: efficient by the highest of standards, friendly and charming and elegant in an old world way - all appear to have been working there for many years. It's a lovely quick outing up to Frederick (made special this evening in a freinds brand new luxury car), and I look forward to our third outting.

Like Mike I also stumbled across this place and glad I did. It was one of the most pleasant dining experiences I have had in a long time. This place is family owned by three brothers (Gladchuk). I ate here for lunch and did find a number of "old people" as Cindy pointed out. But unlike her I will be back. I actually like "old people". I also liked the waitresses uniforms and did not find them to be "weird". Don't miss the opportunity to eat here if you want an excellent meal at a good price. They have been in business for almost 30 years. Their fish is all fresh as are their vegetables. I took the time to take a number of pictures for you to get a feel for the ambience which I found most relaxing. The food is something I would define as good homecooking. They do have a full bar which makes it nice for those wanting a cocktail before the meal. They also take reservations and the waitresss told me that it is a good idea to make one. She also told me about the Christmas decorations she said are very beautiful. They actually make a huge gingerbread house for this occasion which remains on display. I intend to make this place a destination during the Christmas season. This is but one example of how this place feels like eating at home with family. One of the Gladchuk sons was actually working the day I was there and explained how his uncle was one of the cooks who bake the delicious rolls I had just eaten.

Discovered this place by accident. Stopped by for lunch on a whim. Very happy with our choice. The place is lovely inside, very cozy, cute and clean, has real personality. Portions were generous and the flavors well balanced. my wife had the German platter and couldn't have been happier. The crowd was indeed older, but I thought that helped with the charm of the place. Vegan: I was served a mixed vegetable dish off the menu and was very pleased with the taste, quantity and price.

Gladchuk's is a Frederick institution. Filled with locals who have eaten there for years. It's not a showy place, almost looks like it will be country "down home" food - but it's not. Very high quality seafood and steaks. Just completely delicious. If you go, you have to get the crab bisque - it's the best I've ever had. Only had a bad meal once (a broiled piece of fish). And it is a bit pricey so it might be for a special occasion. But it is WELL worth it!!!! YUM!!!! You won't be disappointed.

Great restaurant with excellent food and reasonable prices. Dine there a few times and it's just like "Cheers",where everybody knows your name. I've never experienced bad service or a bad meal there and frequently recommend Gladchuk's to friends and family. The food, service and atmosphere is very high quality for not a big price tag.

I think the menu was very limited. They were offering different dishes, all with the same sauce. Food was just OK. Average age of the crowd on a Friday night was like 45. The service was good.

All Three of us liked the place, the portions were generous, so much we did not have have room for desert. Chicken chesapeake was really good, the turkey dinner was awesome, the duck was great. I had the duck with Grand Mariner and a german Reisling wine. The duck was the largest duck my dinner companions have ever seen. My other friend is a beer aficionado and well the beer selections will be somewhat limited here...
