We ate here for dinner during a mini-vacation in the Bardstown area. After touring distilleries, the ambiance of this restaurant was a perfect fit and it made you feel like you were eating in one of the "rickhouses" (warehouses) at the local distilleries. The bread was unique and drenched in butter which made it excellent. I had the bone in rib-eye and I literally cut it with a butter knife. As a matter of fact, the server didn't even bring me a steak knife and said that if I needed one then she would bring me another steak! You can't beat that service!. The baked potato was good as well as the mac and cheese. My wife had the "hot brown" which must be a local food because I saw it on several menus at various restaurants in the area. She absolutely loved it and couldn't eat more than half of it due to the portion size. They also have a great selection of bourbons including great bourbon flight choices. Once you arrive at the location it is difficult to find but I believe there are several pictures on here that will give you hints on how to find the entrance,

Had a wonderful experience with Amanda! The steaks are delicious and do not require a steak knife. I had the 12 oz ribeye...mmm mmm good. Be sure to go hungry because dinner started off right with the rolls. They are drenched in butter. We then had the shrimp & grits appetizer which was another 5-star dish. Then the steak mentioned above...I finished mine because I couldn't leave any of it on the plate. But I did leave some of my sides, mac & cheese and green beans, which were also delicious. Dessert was to-go. The food would've been worth the trip but Amanda made it supreme. We will be back!

Our party if four dined here last night for the first time while staying overnight in the Bardstown area. We were beyond impressed. From the food to the service and ambiance, we were impressed at every turn. The food: first, their homemade bread is the BOMB! We had 3 servings :) the crab cake appetizer was excellent. They fell apart from having little breading which is just want you want in a good crab cake. The dipping sauce was delish. Our group ordered 3 steak entrees and one salmon. The blueberry bourbon BBQ sauce that came with the salmon was divine. We all ended up dipping our steak in it too, which was tender enough to cut with a butter knife, literally. I highly recommend the scalloped potatoes or mac & cheese side. As for the service, it was friendly, and consistent. At some point during the meal I developed heartburn and asked if they could bring some baking soda (a homemade remedy!) and while they didn't have it, they brought white vinegar and said that one of the kitchen staff said it would work. Sure enough, it did (who knew?!). Making a reservation for a Friday night was easy and accommodating even with only 24hrs notice. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting a filling, delicious upscale meal at a reasonable price. My only regret is that I didn't leave room for dessert!

Loved the Rickhouse. It was hard to find and when we finally saw someone and asked he said its right there on the lower level- funny thing- it just happened to be Jason the owner. This was a great little find on our Bourbon trail experience. I got the ribeye steak and it was really tender and perfectly cooked. The wife got the NY strip and it was good but she liked my ribeye better. Next time I might try a bone in steak. Decent selection of wines and reasonably priced. The green bean and mushroom side dish was awesome and the scalloped potatoes were very rich and tasty. Very nice ambience and great service. If you can find it- go there.

We had a blast at my pal's bachelor party dinner with Amanda as our server. Lots of good steaks and wine, get the loaded baked potato. Grilled Caesar salad is great, too! We are stoked we came here to celebrate our weekend in Bardstown.

Steak you can cut with a butter knife. Let me repeat that: a butter knife. Excellent cuts of meat, tasty sides, great service (thank you, Amanda! ), and a nice atmosphere. Be sure to get the shrimp and grits appetizer. You won't have room for dessert, but they will pack it up for you. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Bardstown.

I really was looking forward to a nice dinner with all the good reviews. Nice atmosphere and really friendly service. Food was good but not what I expected. BBQ chicken was moist and tasty. However, the skin was chewy and not crisp. The scalloped potatoes were good but the Brussel sprouts were mushy,spongy...over cooked My husband had a 9oz sirloin and it was over cooked. My brother had the sirloin and it was fine. Overall, inconsistent food for the price. Maybe it was just a bad day. The location is awkward due to the lack of signage. It is downstairs from the museum. Under the museum stairwell and parking is in the back.

We went to the Rickhouse while staying in Bardstown doing the bourbon trail and going to the Florida State vs. Louisville game in the fall. While our service was not that great. We did end up enjoying the bottle of wine we ordered and the food. The bourbon list was confusing and set up in flights and our server was not helpful. Perhaps if we sat at the bar we would have had better service for drinks. I did end up getting a pour of old bardstown bourbon. We each got the house salad with blue cheese dressing and the Bone-in Rib Eye. The steaks were both cooked medium Rare as requested. For our sides we got the brussel sprouts and the cheesy potatoes. Both were really good. It was a simple steak dinner meal. Salads were not included but the sides were. I was able to box some of mine to go. Which was great because we had it with breakfast the next day and it was yummy. Honestly there are not a ton of options in the town. I was worried about some of the reviews but our meals were reasonably priced and tasty. Service was nice just not knowledgeable. Their bourbon menu needs to be laid out differently. If you want a good steak dinner after hitting the bourbon trail, this is a good spot.

I loved the history of the building. As an old boarding school, it has tons of character. the restaurant is in the basement level of the building, a bit tricky to find as there is not large sign. We opted for patio seating, which was very pleasant. They offered multiple wines from $18 per bottle. Entrees from $15 BBQ chicken. We shared an appetizer, entree and some wine. The server was friendly and efficient. Overall, it was a very nice dining experience, probably one of the nicest that Bardstown has to offer. Definitely worth a visit when in the area.

We had Dinner at the Rick House last night. My husband had the crab cakes, Brussel sprouts, and scallop potatoes! They were great!! My meal was awesome!!! I had the blueberry sauce on salmon and couscous! It was cooked perfectly and was just wonderful!!! Best salmon I have ever had and the sauce was delicious on all of it!! I also had the asparagus to go with it! Yummy! The lemonade with bourbon in it was refreshing and good! Great place to eat!!! We shared the bread pudding for dessert- perfect ending!!! I would like to encourage the Rick House to make a larger sign outside so people can find it easier!! Also always light the candles on the tables and turn on the music! It adds so much!! Great place to dine!!

This place was amazing. We had four people in our party and four different entrees. Every one of our dinners were delicious. From the crab cake starter to the steak I cut with a butter knife. Well done. A touch difficult to find but from what I gathered there are signage restrictions so I wouldn't count that against them. Top notch.

First of all, I'm a picky steak lover. My favorite filet WAS Morton's Steakhouse for years. The Rickhouse 6oz barrel cut filet is a phenomenal cut of meat and is underpriced! This is my new favorite! Eat it with the asparagus and green beans to round out a perfect meal!

We walked from the Old Talbot Tavern for a very nice birthday dinner and that's exactly what we got. Our server was a very polite gentleman, almost too much so. Relax a little because we were relaxed. Our steaks were perfectly cooked and our side dishes were delicious. We moved onto the bar after dinner and shared lovely conversation with locals. I'm sure this place deserves a much better review on a normal night. I came here with the OKHT crowd and they were out of all draft beers and Sam Adams bottles and were reduced to domestic bottles. They were even running out of food! The food, drink, and service I received was friendly and delicious, I just think that management should have done a better job of stocking the shelves in preparation.

This was way over priced. They only had 3 of the 7 salad dressings that were listed. Had no salt on the table. Missing salad fork. No rolls with dinner. Asked for a-1 steak sauce and was told that they may not have any. Over-all - don't waste ur money. So not worth it.

What Excellent steaks. This restaurant has a new steak knife policy which means that if you can't cut it with a butter knife then it fails to meet their standard. I had their 16 oz Bone in Ribeye and it was so tender that you could truly cut it with a butter knife. This is a wonderful policy!

Definite stop. Went after a distillery tour. Read about this place on Yelp and it did not disappoint. Large selection of bourbons. The bartender was great in recommending bourbons based upon our tastes. The apps were very good. We opted for the bruschetta at the bar keeps recommendation and it was delicious. While there we had to try the shrimp & grit cake. Which was another win. Sorry we had to leave. Would definitely go back.

Great location and great building. The food is great, the bourbon selection is amazing, and hope they are able to work through the kinks. Not so hot for lunch but I that's not the biggest issue. The staff leaves a lot to be desired. They seem inattentive and don't realize that they are servers. I have been several times and about half the time the server does not live up to expectations. I love this restaurant and the idea that it represents with its bourbon selection and amazing steaks, at an affordable price. I just hope the downfall isn't the servers because that would be a shame. I recommend this place to everyone and give them the disclaimer that the steak is worth the risk of having a bad server

Definitely worth a stop for a romantic couple, a business dinner or a group of friends. Had a group of four. All were impressed. Are appetizer was bruschetta. It was very good with a well-above average balsamic. Two steaks-both cooked perfectly to order and tasted very good. I've eaten steaks all over this nation and that piece of beef could compete with 99% of them. Crab cakes were not the frozen-in-a-box variety but were breaded nicely with plenty of crab. Salmon was flaky. The plating for the fish was impressive but the steaks need work...it was just a piece of beef on a dinner plate. Great tasting beef but needs something for visual dressing. The salad was excellent and the blue cheese dressing had a wonderful undertone of what I think was garlic...some of the best I have had. The vegetables need work...string beans were basically string beans. The brussel sprouts were not that special. Dessert is a weakness...only two selections. I'd like to see at least three. The restaurant is just below ground level and offers white table clothed tables. Tables were spread around nicely. No crowding. Lighting is dimmed nicely There's a full bar in a different room and musical entertainment is offered in a third room. The only issue with the music is the room is all stone/concrete and brick. They need some serious fabric to soak up some of the sound. Wine List: Best in Bardstown BY FAR. Good wines by the glass and especially by the bottle. It's a dynamic list so you will see changes over time. If this place was in Louisville or a larger city I would have given it four stars. But for Bardstown it is a five star restaurant that we will return to. The chef, John, came out to our table. There's a great energy about him. We will certainly be back to support him and hope other will help make this Bardstown jewel successful

Food is good. The atmosphere is really cool and historic. Service is notoriously slow and you will wait a bit for your food. You won't mind as its one good food, and two soaking up this place is worth your wait.

If you want to celebrate a special occasion think twice before going to "Rickhouse" I took my wife for our Silver wedding anniversary, big mistake, first I tried to call to make a reservation no on answered! Then I went online to make the booking, I was told I would receive a call back confirming my booking, I never received any call. We turned up and told them our name and the reservation time only to be told during the week it is walk-in!!!! After 5 minutes of 2 people deliberating we were shown to our table, the place only had a few people in so what was to deliberate?? We tried to order wine, that was a challenge in its self "sorry we do not have that but we will next week, really!!!! Then we ordered the meal, salad & steaks, we asked for two glasses of red wine and got white, OK it's poured so we will keep it trying to help out, the salad arrived placed on the table only to have my wine knocked over me!!!! I mopped it up with my napkin and did not receive a clean on in return, the steaks arrived halfway through eating my salad?? So I had to forgo my salad if I wanted a warm steak! Really! We had 2 glasses of red wine when asked what kind I said what ever you have as it seems what is on the wine list is not what you have. Bottom line after a total disaster which was supposed to be a "special occasion" we were not even given any kind of discount for sitting through this meal with wet trousers!! Disgraceful... Save you money and time before going to "Rickhouse"

It's a pricey place, but a great treat to cap off an afternoon of touring a nearby bourbon distillery. The steak was cooked as requested. I enjoyed the quality of the meat. If you're the type who likes steak sauce, try it with some of their bourbon-infused barbecue sauce. The scalloped potatoes made of 11 cheeses was pretty epic for me. I'll be dreaming of them. As a California girl, visiting the area , the restaurant was a great way to enjoy the local flavor. It's a bit hard to find from the main road, but worth the effort!

Oh boy! At first I was skeptical because I saw a tacky looking door with an open sign, but around the corner is a beautiful entrance with a gate. The bourbon barrels and bourbon bottles inside add a nice touch to the decor. But now, the best part... The food! The scalloped potatoes, the bourbon green beans, the BBQ chicken, the bourbon bread pudding, the bourbon brownie. All of if it is incredible. I went with my family and we shared the desserts and some of our sides. Even the salads were fresh and amazing. The dressings tasted homemade. The 11 cheese scalloped potatoes were my favorite, but everything was fantastic. I wish I lived closer so I could try that hot brown. Give this place a chance. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

My wife and I were visiting bourbon distilleries in KY and decided to spend the night in Bardstown at the Bourbon Manor when Todd the B&B owner suggested the Rickhouse for dinner, What a great experience. The service was great, thanks again Renee, for the experience making the evening even more enjoyable. The steaks were sooo tender they didn't even provide a steak knife because you can cut them with the butter knife. My wife had the filet and I choose the mushroom ravioli which were both delicious . I had the 5 flight Bourbon but was disappointed that they were out of Pappy Van Winkle. My wife ordered the bread pudding which was among the best I've ever had and usually I don't even like it. If you're ever in Bardstown KY and don't eat here you're missing a great experience. It's not the easiest place to find but it's definitely worth finding.

Fabulous lunch spot! We were on the bluegrass parkway headed to Cynthiana, KY and we were getting hungry. Bardstown appeared to be our only opportunity for lunch unless we waited another hour or so. Since I was too hungry to wait I started searching YELP reviews for Bardstown. The restaurant is located in the bottom of the Spalding building. This historical place is nicely decorated and romantic. I was very surprised that we were able to get a table. If I worked here, I would lunch here at least once a week as it is the perfect relaxing break from the hectic pace of life. Bourbon BBQ Chicken was delicious. The sandwich was so big I couldn't get my mouth and I've been accused of having a big mouth. I took the top bun off and cut it up to eat it. The waitress was very friendly and the service was great. This will be a must stop for dinner next time I'm passing through Kentucky.

Another great culinary addition to Bardstown. The menu here offers up selections you can't find anywhere else in town. From a variety of bone in steaks, a few southern classics to a massive 24 ounce pork chop there should be something on the menu for everyone. Had the shrimp and grits for an appetizer it was very delicious and was done with the chef's own take on this classic dish. For the main course I took on the pork chop. Two very important tips regarding the pork chop. #1 if you want to tackle this monster tell your server first thing so the kitchen can get it going. It takes longer to cook due to its size so this way your meal won't slow everyone else's down. #2 skip the appetizer if your going for this dish, it comes with two sides which is more than enough food for one night.The pork chop was very good. The apricot bourbon chutney really enhanced the dish and overall it was completely worth the wait. I wasn't able to finish all of it, but probably could have had I skipped the shrimp and grits. The staff was very friendly and attentive including the chef who came out to see how we were doing and how we were enjoying the food. If this place keeps putting out dishes like the ones we had then The Rickhouse should be around for a while.

We were visiting the area for a bourbon tour and wanted to have a nice dinner afterward. We were sorely disappointed with our experience at the Rickhouse. Their website states that they are open from 4 - 10 PM. We arrived at 6:00 and they were closed until 6:30 for no apparent reason. We had put in a reservation online that they never received. They did accomodate us at 6:30 to make up for it, which we appreciated. They were clearly understaffed or had no manager present, because the service was terrible. Our server was well meaning and somewhat attentive, but she was also swamped with the five other tables (that we could see) she had. A food runner came out of the kitchen looking confused and approached every single table with every dish she brought out, looking for who had ordered it. The high point of this visit was the food and the value for the price. The steaks were good quality and cooked well, and the sides were delicious too. The problem was that the poor service really made us feel like we spent too much and didn't have the dining experience we were looking for. Judging by other reviews, it seems like we must have just caught them on the worst night ever, but as much as we were hoping to love the place, things just didn't come together.

My sisters and I were doing the Bourbon Trail and had dinner at the Rickhouse. We went early and had a drink in the bar. Jason, our bartender, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He makes an excellent Manhattan! We all had steak, nicely flavored and perfectly grilled. The scalloped potatoes were wonderful. Brussels sprouts were a bit overdone. Green beans and asparagus were very good. The bread pudding was excellent. Service was outstanding and the place has great atmosphere reminiscent of an old wine cellar, all brick and stone. Highly recommended. Reasonably priced for what you get.

This steakhouse is wonderful and unique to Bardstown. The steak was flavorful and so juicy and tender they actually don't give you a steak knife to cut it, but a butter knife instead. The sides are great too, especially the macaroni and cheese. The best thing about the entire meal however were the apple crepes.. Do not eat here and miss out on the apple crepes! My only complaint was the service. I would've liked to see our server more than we did.

Located in the basement of the Spalding building and with fantastic steaks and a very romantic, I had eaten at this establishment a few years ago when it was Xavier's. This was our 42nd anniversary and we just happened to be visiting Bardstown, so I was certain that this was the place even though it had changed ownership. NOT! The waitress took our wine order (a 2008 cabernet) and came back 10 minutes later with a bottle of 2010 cabernet. She said it was the same price, which I questioned, and the manager reckoned as how she could not change the price since they pay the same for all their wines! I asked for another bottle of 2008 cabernet; 10 minutes later the waitress comes back with another bottle of 2010. Finally, I order a bottle of 2008 Simi; 15 munutes go by; she comes back to announce that they are out of Simi. We went to Kreso's on Main Street. Much the better attitude, service, and food.

This a tough review to write and I almost feel I need a return visit to give it a second chance. Anyway, we went to the lounge for some after dinner drinks and an app. First, they appeared to have some problems that evening but I'm not sure what. The service was probably the worst I've ever experienced, and that's saying a lot. There was only us and another couple at the bar, so busy wasn't an issue. The "bartenders" had no idea the inventory and no idea how to make a drink with the exception of an old fashioned. This being the bourbon state my wife was looking to try something more than just straight whiskey. There were anywhere from 1-3 wait staff behind the bar, serving 2 couples. The staff were extremely interested in speaking with one another but not with the customers and we needed something on fire to catch their attention. Three feet away. We didn't have a lighter. Twice customers from the restaurant area came over and had to go behind the bar to find a bottle of beer as the staff had no idea what was available and thought it easier to let the customer do it. This is a high-end chop house. We managed to get an order of the Mac & cheese. It was, as others have said, very good. The drinks were fine if not a little pricey. Excellent building and location, really sets the mood well and is the only reason for the 2nd star. I want to give this place another shot but with an average of $50 per plate I just can't get past that astonishingly bad service in the most profitable part of the restaurant. There are a lot of good steakhouses with the only true difference being service. I just don't see it here.

Disappointing. With such a beautiful space, we expected to drop some money on a fine dining experience. Our server, while pleasant enough, didn't know what the bar had on draft and did not offer us a bourbon menu till we asked for it towards the end of the meal (we only know they had one because she brought one to the new table next to us). By then we were ready to leave. We had the crab cake appetizer. It tasted good, but was mushy. A little crispness on the crust would have really have been an improvement. Our medium rare rib eyes were cooked properly, but were rather tasteless and fatty. More than half of mine was fat. I've had a better steak at Longhorn. The green beans with bourbon mushrooms were equally tasteless and on the raw side of al dente. The scalloped potatoes were dripping in a runny cheese sauce. Didn't taste bad but not much better than Betty Crocker, make at home. In a half empty dining room, we waited too long for our check. And the ladies room smelled like something had died in it. All in all, a letdown.

I had a crab cake appetizer, the 6-ounce filet, the 11-cheese Mac-n-cheese, and scalloped potatoes. I didn't think the crab cakes were anything to write home about, and that combined with them arriving about 30 seconds after my entree is why I'm giving 4 stars. Everything else was outstanding and I quickly found myself wishing that I had ordered the larger filet. It was both tender and flavorful. You won't need a steak knife and they knowingly don't provide one. It was really one of the better steaks that I've had at a restaurant in a very long time. The last time I had a steak that good I paid a good bit more for it. The scalloped potatoes were also quite good but the Mac-n-cheese was otherworldly good. The best I've ever had. They have a modest selection of wines, beer, Bourbon, and Rye whiskeys. I had a Van Winkle Rye that worked very well with the steak. Sadly, there were no Scotches. If you go I would recommend leaving the IU and UofL apparel at home. That appears to be cat territory and I did receive a couple of comments on my IU shirt. They're still pretty sensitive about that loss to IU a few weeks back..

Six of us had a fabulous lunch here -- the Hot Brown with 12 cheese sauce was the best I've ever had, and we washed that down with Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. Waitress was super friendly. Afterward we hung around the bar for a bit checking the amazing bourbon selection. Tried the 23 year and 20 year Pappy Van Winkle, which had just come in, for $20 a pour. Quite the deal!

I have to say that I am very picky when it comes to my steaks and I wont just order them anywhere... I have had mediocre steaks in the nicest of places, and this was not the case for The Rickhouse. I rather enjoyed the steak very much. The chef knows what he is doing, and I have told him that. I have been about 4 times to enjoy the food having something different almost every time. I don't really like grits...BUT... the Shrimp and Grits here PASSES the test! I will order again. I wish The Rickhouse many years of success, and hope that they keep up the good work. The ONLY reason that I have given them 4 stars instead of 5 is that they have not had a bourbon list the times I have been there. When I see that list, they will get 5...

My wife and I went here on New Year's Eve. It was a really nice place. It is a bourbon lovers dream. They have over a 100 different kinds from high end to low. Also the food was great. We both had steaks and they were cooked perfectly. It's going to be a welcome addition to Bardstown's restaurant scene. We loved it and cant wait to go back.
