Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Really good food! I've had a hankering for rice and beans lately and San Jose really fulfilled that. Our server was super sweet and just over all great! I got the taco dinner and got three al pastor tacos that came with rice and beans and salad; super delicious. The corn tortillas they were on were fantastic and I don't exactly like corn tortillas. My boyfriend got a breakfast dish, eggs with chorizo that also came with rice and beans and salad. He said it was the one best Mexican breakfast you could get in Rockford. Highly recommend to someone looking for an affordable, authentic Mexican dish.

This is a really great restaurant on State. The food is prepared fresh and fast, and an added bonus is that the location makes it easy for me to order carryout between classes. I'm a fairly picky eater- I usually do not venture to order something meat-based, especially at an unfamiliar restaurant, but I'm so glad I tried the chicken gordita. It was absolutely delicious and didn't have any, for lack of better words, inconsistent textures that usually scare me away from meat. Everything I've ever ordered has been extremely cheap; I can order a filling chicken gordita and taco for less than $5. I'm shocked every single time I get my bill.

Margaritas: these are cheap, sweet, and because they're cheap you can afford to buy more than one (and it's takes more than one to get to happy hour bc these are a bit dilute). Tacos are also very good. I wouldn't recommend any thing but the tacos. Make sure you ask for the cilantro/onion topping rather than the lame lettuce and tomato topping. Ambience is fun. Can be a bit loud with the music. Me and my friends come here after a test. So it's a good place if you're just looking to relax and not drop a ton of $.

The food &&& drinks are sooo good! &&& best of all it's sooo cheap! Each taco is less than $3 &&& they also have margaritas for only $3.50!! Not to mention, they don't have a weird cheap tequila taste like most cheap margaritas at other places! I want to leave five stars b/c of the excellent value in food, but there are a few things I don't like. A couple of times I've gotten awful service. Also the load music they play on weekend nights is obnoxious. It is way to loud and I can hardly even hear the person sitting next to me. I don't recommend going in after a seven on a weekend. Also the place doesn't usually have that many people in during lunch (when I usually go) which is a little uncomfortable sometimes.

Service was a bit slow, but the food is worth the wait!

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed San Jose yet. My husband & I are regulars. To us this is the best & most authentic Mexican restaurant in town. I usually stick to the same few things so I haven't tried everything on the menu. This is my one place that I will eat mea though I typically try to to. The arracherra is amazing. Ever time I order it i can't believe how good it is. It comes with rice & beans, a quesadilla, chorizo, lettuce, tomato, & grilled onion. You can get flour or corn tortillas with it. I am salivating just thinking about it & will probably have to go get it this week now. The tacos & burritos are also really good. My brother tried the enchiladas with mole sauce which he thought were pretty good. The service starts out good & then kind of fades but once we get our food we don't need much else. I usually ask for a drink refill when the food comes so that I have what I need. There is one girl there that is super friendly & attentive & we try to sit in her section when we can. We've also had breakfast there which was good & a great value. I tell all my friends & family to go here. When it comes to mexican we will only go to San Jose for a meal & Los Portales for a quick taco. The other mexican restaurants in town suck.

I love this place hands down for food but every other time I come we seem invisible. .The seat ur self has to go...I had two 3 yr old with me that are well behaved and after getting our own menus 20 min after arriving and waiting another 7 to get a drink these two are at their capacity for entertaining themselves as by now we would have had our food. Ridiculous! And again it's not the first second or even third time...good thing I like the food or I would give a 0* rating

The restaurant food was very good the atmosphere is very authentic our order was a little messed up only because we didn't speak Spanish you can't get more authentic Four of us went to the restaurant we were out the door stuffed for less than $50. I would definitely go back. They also serve breakfast.

We miss this place. We now live in San Diego where they have the best Mexican food in the country. San Jose rivals everything we have here. One of the most authentic Mexican restaurant places and the atmosphere is authentic as well. My wife and I still talk about san joses food and the delicious pickled carrots and potatoes.

Absolutely mexi"CAN" Wow! Best surprise ever. In addition to learning Rockford is the second biggest city in all of Illinois (after Chicago), I also learned that San Jose is a dope spot for Mexican food. Living in LA, I would usually scoff at the idea of getting sushi or Mexican in the Midwest, but someone wanted to meet me here so I went with it... The ceviche at $7 is a huge portion and as fresh as the stuff I get in LA. The queso fundido was possibly the best I've ever had, however anytime you deep fry cheese and roll it up in a warm tortilla you're not gonna be too off (like sex, even when it's bad it's still good). I love it when places have ala cart options; and my $1.60 taco pastor was big and dope -- As was my $2.60 chorizo quesedilla! The menu is super thorough and the prices are sooooo cheap. The only thing that ran our bill for 2 up was the fact that we got bombed on: Coronoa, 2 Margs, and 3 Cranbery/Smirnoffs... The booze is still relatively cheap though. All of this came to $50 and had we drank Cokes or waters it would have been about $17! I will stop here for the rest of my life any time I drive through the Rock!

They seriously just served a an ice (as in out if the refrigerator) cold steak burrito!!!! This is NOT fresh food! This is the second time this has happened! My sons chicken quesadias were good. Husband had a combination plate that he asked for shrimp with. The shrimp had a frozen fishy taste to me, but hubby liked it. Just got the freshly made burrito. It's not bad. Hope they didn't spit on it. The rest of the meal was pretty good.

Excellent Mexican food, far better than anything I have had on the east coast where I am from. Found this from other Yelp reviews and agree that it is VERY good. Authentic, almost everyone was from Mexico or Latin America (customers as well as staff). If I lived around here I would be back regularly.

I give this two stars only because at least it was clean and the service was OK. But the food is pretty bad. Maybe it compares well to other restaurants in Rockford; I really can't say. But by any other standard, the food is simply not good, from the watery and way over-sweetened horchata to the unbelievably oversalted and heavy refrieds to the bland, oldish guacamole to the dry meat.

I doubt you will find more authentic food outside of Mexico. Very good!

I'm on break from school for 4 weeks, and so far I've been here 3 times, and will probably go back once before I leave for school. Needless to say, this place great. I love small portions, so it's great to be able to order 1 chicken taco and 1 quesadilla, instead of those meal combos with rice, and beans, and so on. (Though if thats what you like, they've got that too.) My 1 taco, 1 quesadilla, and 1 soda, is $5 total. The whole menu is reasonable, for 2 people it's usually less than $20 (without alcohol). My friend swears by the carne asada tacos and the tortas, which are huge. We go so often the manager recognizes us and there is always great service. Never too busy, no reservations needed, you seat yourself. Looking for Mexican in Rockford? Go to San Jose.

I love San Jose!!! Their food is delicious, really inexpensive and so are the margaritas! I've always had great service too. That they're open till 1:30am on weekdays and even later on weekends, which is awesome in itself! I try to go whenever I'm in town.

This place has the best Mexican food in Rockford. I've eaten lunch here several times and I've tried all of the steak-based house specialties. All have been good. The salsa is freshly made, but their chips are not spectacular. I suggest ordering a Jamaica or horchata to accompany your meal. The pickled veggies at your table are a nice accent. The portions are huge.

This place was actually decent. The carne asada was great. Such an overfilling meal. I think it's one of the better Mexican restaurants in Rockford. The beans and rice were both yummy. The horchata was the only thing that made me sad, really watered down. I'm glad they have an oatmeal shake though! Will get it next time.

So, this place makes Taco Bell look like really good Mexican food. Bad service, no refills on drinks, sticky, dirty tables. Six entrees, and every one was bad, except the nachos. I had chicken enchiladas; the place included 3 enchiladas that were each 3 inches in length, a small scoop of rice, and a smaller scoop of refried beans. Although I ordered chicken enchiladas, I'm quite sure they were beef, although no one at our table could even tell. The sauce resembled chunky spaghetti sauce more than enchilada sauce, and tasted about the same. My daughter ordered shrimp tostadas, which came swimming in lime juice and were so sour not one of us could eat them. My 3-year-old got a chicken tenders kids meal, and the chicken was fried to the point of being inedible. Our server even forgot to bring us our check although we asked twice for it; after 20 minutes I was going to walk out, so my husband went to the bar and asked for our bill. Never again!

As far as the burritos go, they are fanstastic. Great price and one of the few occassions where you get more than what you pay for. I have never ordered anything else from this place because I just don't want to mess with a sure thing.

From the decor, I thought this would be tacky, so-so Mexican. I was proven so wrong! My bf and I enjoyed an excellent dinner. We are both vegetarians, so it was very nice of them to accommodate our requests on fajita. Fajita was delicious. The beans were bit too salty on my palette, but margarita helped to wash it down. The portion, as described by others, are large. The service was superb as well. I'd highly recommend San Jose if you're ever in Rockford.

I took the family here a week ago for lunch. We walked in, and it wasn't very busy at all. A server greeted us and told us to sit anywhere we liked. After looking around we decided on a booth. The server that first addressed us when we walked in introduced herself as our waitress and took our drink orders. It has a nice atmosphere. The interior is done like a town square in a Mexican village. The ceiling is even painted to look like the sky. There is a large fountain right in the middle. I will say that the booths were a touch uncomfortable. The seats where kind of hard and there wasn't a lot of padding on them. We started with an order of the Guacamole, because my family loves guac. We weren't overly impressed. The flavor was okay. I didn't care for the rather large chunks of avocado in it. I really thought it needed something else added to it. For lunch we all had enchiladas rojas. My son and I both had the chicken; my wife had the ground beef. The chicken was good, a little dry, but a nice flavor to it. It was also very tender and easy to eat. Both my son and I thought they were pretty good. My wife wasn't all that impressed with her beef. She said that she thought it tasted off. She let me try some and I thought it was okay, but I agree it didn't taste the greatest. Our service started out really well. The waitress would check on us regularly. Then something changed. My wife thought she saw our waitress head into the back with her phone and we didn't see her for the rest of our visit. We were ready for our check and we waited a good fifteen minutes before I flagged down another server to get us our check. We paid the other server and left. The service we had could have been a fluke, but it did stand out.

Wow. The tacos were a little lackluster in flavor (and had an overall downgrade in fillings). Maybe it was a bad night for them, or maybe they are just going down in quality. It was made up for by the alcohol and the mariachi band randomly coming up to our table and serenading us.

Nice setting for a Mexican restaurant . Service was good for the exception of a sign at the door notifying you of price increase . So we asked our waitress if the menu reflected new prices and she assured us it did . Well surprise when we got to bill . Wasn't much higher but higher then menu prices . Small portions for the price . Food was a little better then average . Had burrito dinner and taco dinner . Would possibly give it another try
