My meal wasn't so good. Souvlaki plate was reasonably priced, but disappointing. Pita seemed stale. Meat was dry and overcooked, and the fries were soggy instead of crisp. With all the tomatoes and onions provided I would have rather had rice than fries anyway, they seemed out of place. The guy at the counter was on the phone when I arrived, took my order while on the phone, and continued to talk on the phone the whole time I was there. Food and experience left me sure I wouldn't be coming back.

Alex's is the best place around for Italian beefs and gyros, hands down.. Better than Tommy's, Fratellos, Portillos, etc.. I have never had a beef, sausage or gyro here that wasn't amazing... EVER.

Guy who owns this place is a riot. Friend asked for silverware and he asked if she needed right or left handed, she was very confused, haha! Best gyros in town, fries are not my favorite style but are very good. Pizza puff is your hot dog stand standard and they have Vienna beef hot dogs so you can't go wrong.

Food is very consistent here. Gyros are my usual item of purchase. They are always quite good. Reasonable prices. sometimes a little slow with several customers. good place!

After living in McHenry for the past 6 years, my mom and I FINALLY stopped in to Alex's a few Fridays ago after an evening of conquering our to-do shopping list. We arrived around 8pm, so about an hour before they closed, and ordered two quarter-pound cheeseburgers and cheese fries. The girls behind the counter were very friendly and funny, which was a good start. We did wait a good 20 or so minutes for our order, but that tells me it was made fresh, and I'll certainly wait for made-to-order food. The burgers were tasty and received compliments from my mom, who prefers McDonald's Quarter Pounders to almost anything else. She also loved that the fries were "skinny" - her favorite. During our wait, we were checking out the menu. They have daily specials that seem to be phenomenal deals, so we'll be back to check them out! In all it was a pretty solid experience of good CHEAP food.

Ummmmm yeeeeeah.... Not only did the guy behind the counter leave me standing there for literally 12 minutes before he even acknowledged me but once I did get my Italian beef sandwich it was on week old bread with cold cheese thrown on top. Ya, probably won't be returning there unfortunately. Remember Alex, your customers are what keep you in biz, so don't forget to give em good service. Just saying.

There's just something about this place that reminds me of a quick, greasy, delicious place in New York City. Their food is great, but they almost have an "I-don't-give-a-crap" attitude: the store hasn't been updated since what looks like the '70s and the staff are never friendly (never rude, but they don't sweet talk you). I would probably hate these attributes in a lot of restaurants, but here, I think it really works for them. My favorite thing to get is the gyro plate: two pitas, lots of meat, tomatoes, onions and cilantro, and tzatziki sauce, plus a small fry for just $7. Most of their prices are reasonable. Some things on the menu are surprisingly expensive, but you can definitely get out of there for under $10 a person. They have tables inside, they have tables outside, and they take MasterCard and Visa. We usually get our stuff to go. You can order when you get there and be out in about five minutes, but if you're really in a rush you can call ahead. They deliver too!

Thier food is outstanding. But when i picked up lunch to go a while ago they didnt package the dressing correctly, so when i picked up the PAPER bag the food got all over the inside of my car-unedible. So when i called to tell them that they did not seem to care! Haven't been their since!

I love this place.. I just got a gyros plate with extra meat delivered to my door in less than 20 minutes for only $12!!! The service is great and the meal was fantastic..

I stopped by for a quick bite to eat. They have a great selection of food from Hamburgers to Hotdogs, shrimp and shakes! Super clean inside with a very kind staff working. Pleantly of parking and they are also open 7 days a week. I'll be back next time I'm in the area.

This place is an institution for sure!! If you gave it a bad review, you just don't get it.. It's been here forever, sure I may be biased because I have been coming here since I was in high school (that's a solid 15 years!) but you can't beat the gyro! And the "mean' guy behind the counter is just not all fake friendly, so what!? He is the real deal greek, and it's really a little entertaining frankly. Back in the day my mom struck up a convo with him to find that his home base was the south side of Chi and they drove all that way for this family restaurant. I support this local business 100% and I'm not mad at all about the shabby unchanged interior, part of the '94 charm ;) P.s-you must get the cheese fries!!!

Yes the ambiance is not the greatest, but the last time i checked we go to eat at places not observed the decorations! Food is amazing! I have 2 boys ( grown boys) living with me and every Monday is gyro night! Cheap amazing food! It's home food! If and when we move Alex's will be missed unbelievably much! I love their pizza puffs, hot wings, gyros and honestly all the food in general is great. Yes they have this i dont care attitudes but if you lived in mchenry this long you would too, just saying!
(5)Amber H.
5 stars for the gyro, consistency in food taste and quality, as well as an owner that makes it so clear he loves his job. Oh, and for coke products! Otherwise, the ambiance isn't something I want to be around for very long and you might have to brush salt/whatever else off your table before sitting.
(4)Lia L.
The guy at the counter was intimidating and rude, the place is cramped and the decor is outdated. The Chicago dog was mediocre and the bun was stale. I won't be back!

Best gyro around! I have always been a fan. If your going to eat inside its pretty simple, nothing fancy.

I don't think of this place as a restaurant so much but more like another typical Vienna joint of the thousands we have in the Chicagoland area. Vienna joint as in the Vienna brand hot dogs you can find pretty much anywhere here. Even though these hot dog stand places all serve basically the same stuff (hot dogs, beef, sausage, gyros etc.), they can be quite different from each other. I find that the double dogs and fries here are very good except they don't put celery salt on the dogs seems. No idea why. Maybe I was supposed to ask for it. The souvlaki plate I thought was very good. I stop here from time to time on my way home and I find it pretty consistent. Although it can be crowded around 5 to 6 PM during the week so be prepared to wait in a line a little.
(4)Peter J.
Some good food here. Positive is they are one of the few hot dog/gyros places that deliver. Negative is that the food is normally a bit cold when delivered and the wait time is normally 1.5 hours to get it delivered. All in all worth the stop in.
(4)Aaron G.
Best Gyro's in Mchenry! I stop in a few times a month for the Gyro special.
(4)Suzie S.
BEST ITALIAN BEEFS AROUND! Awesome fries and shakes. Actually, the shakes are amazing! The burgers are pretty good but I mainly come here for the italian beefs with cheese and hot peppers, no place matches!
(5)Andrew B.
I ate a beef and some fries. Afterwards I became sick. I stopped in to tell the manager a day later and was scolded and told I need to take it up with the health department.
(1)Franny T.
Good food... better than Tommy's. The fries are crisped to perfection. The gyro is packed full... ask for extra sauce.
(4)Kelly F.
Okay so this place doesn't seem so great on the outside, but inside the menu has many delicious sounding choices. The best place in McHenry to get a gyro. I had one today and it was so tasty!! Be aware they are big portions here so bring along a friend to split it with :)
