I am glade this a one time stop. There was nothing special about this place. It might have been a Route 66 classic back in the day, but it is far from being one today. We had the Steak Lamia and Mostaccioli (pasta) and they both lacked flavor. The meals where already expensive to begin with but charging extra for pasta sauce is crazy! As for desert we had sticky toffee pudding, surprisingly it was good flavor. Even though the food lacked taste, the staff was very warm and welcoming.

The best food I have had on I-55 between Stl and Springfield! Excellent cuisine, terrific service and a quaint, small town atmosphere. The term "cafe" is oddly placed in the name. This is not a true "cafe" in my eyes. It is a full service restaurant where you can get anything from steak to blt's. They serve alcohol, appetizers, entrees, sandwiches, salads and deserts so you have much to choose from. I'll be back for sure!!

Our waiter Ryan was so professional and friendly. I had the blackened salmon and it was crisp outside and moist inside. Good food and excellent service. I wish all Route 66 were as good as Ariston Cafe.

For what it is, it's excellent. Good food, cooked well, amazing service. No, it's not Ruth's Chris steakhouse, but we were pleased with our road trip stop here. Loved the atmosphere and the kindness of the staff. Very cool Route 66 stop.

You really want to be able to give this place 4 or 5 stars-it has a great atmosphere and a good vibe with friendly staff. The problem is with the food-just not fresh or made in house. Mashed potatoes were obviously from a box and chicken strips obviously frozen and from a box. I'm giving 2 stars for deserts, staff and a salad bar that has some fresh interesting items but needs more! This is NOT an inexpensive restaurant and really needs to step up on their food offerings and perhaps simplify their menu.

The Ariston's atmosphere is a perfect, quirky perfect blend between Route 66 diner and modern date night. I had the special (DELICIOUS roasted pork loin with walnut butter and Brussels sprouts), but the table next to me had beers, fried chicken, and burgers. EVERYONE haas dessert! (All made on site). The service was excellent. The coffee was not. Get better coffee, Ariston, and I'll boost my rating to five stars. : )

Service 5 Stars. Food 3.5 Stars. Desserts 5 Stars. History. 10 Stars. This place has a ton of character. The oldest resturant on Route 66. Reason enough for me. I always look at the negative reviews to see "why" someone didn't like it. I think the reviews here are honest and balanced. Service was incredibly good and refreshing. Lots of old school class here. Servers wearing ties. The booths are old historic wood high back booths. Nothing is forced though like some retro old school joints that are new "old" dives. It's like this place just didn't change anything since the 1940s. It's like a diner you'd see on the movie Cars! The place just hung on until they were cool again. Clean enough. Wide variety on menu. Here's what I enjoyed about it: they make great homemade soups. I'm a soup fan so I loved it. Plus the decor was genuine and honest. Food was decent enough too. Salad bar lacks creativity. Something you'd see at a small buffet. Desserts are awesome. Be sure to ask which ones they make in-house. You gotta try it. It's a good bet and a great and unexpected find in this tiny town!

Loved the history of this place. It still has the original lunch counter and woodwork and is near old Route 66. I was ready for fabulous homemade Midwestern diner food. All the right things were on the menu -- open-faced sandwiches with meat and gravy; fried chicken *and* baked chicken, pork chops. But my roast porkloin was sliced thin, overcooked and tough. It was covered with gravy that made it better, but I longed for my Mom's home cooking which was better any day. Service was friendly and the waiter cheerfully accomodated our requests to change up our orders. A plus was the fresh locally grown asparagus, simply grilled to tendercrisp. There was an interesting dessert tray -- surprisingly no pie, but the creamy layered lemon dessert was good and my friend liked her warm date cake with caramel sauce.

we ate at aristons about 1 yr. ago...i live in tx but visiting il.......we hit rte. 66 to go see my family in st. louis....thought aristons looked like a quaint lil nice place and stopped i had the best steak i've ever tasted in my life!!!!! the service was wonderful and staff very nice!!! i bought a rt. 66 tshirt and we hit 66 on our way!!! when i told my uncle....johnny rabbitt... were we ate at aristons he was delighted to hear how much we enjoyed it!!! he sure does love ariston's food and service!! thx again and i hope to get up there again!!!!!!

One of our family favorites for decades. I came here as a kid and now it is a must stop for my family when traveling from Houston. Everything is delicious and don't skip dessert; be sure to get some pie!! Service is always great and the decor takes you back to the Route 66 days. Love this place.

We have been through this area several times but yesterday was the first time we have ever been to Ariston Cafe. We loved it. Ariston was started in 1924 and moved to Litchfield in 1935 and are still in the same building. I had the salad & soup bar. There was ham and bean soup and it was really good. I tried all the salads and liked all but one which was brussel sprouts. It's hard to like a brussel sprout. The kids had tacos that were homemade and they really enjoyed them. They split a lemon desert and devoured it in minutes. I didn't even get to try it. They said it was fabulous! We are looking forward to going back again someday.

This is one of those "I want to love this place, but" reviews. I have probably kept the four rating in the past on wishful thinking. I love the history. The service is great and it is always fun to find these old places along the road. But I have to be honest, it is really a three star place and we will continue to stop on our way to Chicago to see the kids. On our last visit I had a daily special Hot Pork Sandwich. I know the drill on these things; white bread covered with meat, then mashed potatoes and gravy over it all. This can be roadside café food at its finest. While waiting, I was envisioning wonderful moist and tender roast pork and rich, brown homemade gravy. What I got was sliced, dry poorly prepared pork loin and if that was homemade gravy, it sure tasted like it came out of a jar or a Durkees packet. I ate it and was disappointed. I realize that with this large menu, you can't have all of things homemade like Grandma used to do, but when it is your special of the day, put some effort into it.

The food, hospitality, and service are second to none. My wife and I stopped in for a beer on the Route 66 tour. We were met with genuine hospitality. The owner was there and we talked about our trip and where we had been before coming to Ariston Cafe. After talking, we decided to come back for dinner. We had a steak dinner which was cooked perfectly. Great dinner, service, and hospitality again.... Unreal!!! We talked to the owner again and he insisted desert was on him... What a pleasant surprise... We felt like we were part of the family at Ariston. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone...

Well, if you are a HUNGRY, HUNGRY person that can put a way a lot of food, then this place and their buffet is GREAT for you. If you are 2 skinny women, you will need to order off the menu, or should I say, you should. We just ate there on our way back from Chicago. Have to say this was more expensive and sub-standard to anything we ate in a week in Chicago. That may seem unfair at first until you realize we paid 8.00 per person with drink refills for 2 STELLAR full fledged 5 STAR luncheon meals at a Chicago Bar, when, this place was 20.00 per person. The only thing missing was the dessert would have been extra in Chicago, but still would have been cheaper. With this reference in mind, I really wanted to give this place 1 star, but being kind because of its' history. It's charming in that it probably hasn't changed a bit since 1924. We both tried the buffet as it had lots of options. It was called their Sunday Brunch Buffet and runs til 2pm. They had a chef to carve you up a slice of ham or beef brisket. However, they are sitting under heat lamps, which means that after the 1st 20 minutes, maybe less of this buffet, these meats are drying out and getting tough. The young man recommended the ham to me, for the afore reference. THE GOOD: GREAT WAIT staff, on top of everything. REAL MASHED POTATOES and they were delicious Green Beans, seasoned with bacon and onion, but not Southern with Vinegar/Sugar too. Your grandmother's stewed tomatoes, well almost, no bread & extras, but fairly tasty. They have a pretty good Beer Selection and Fitz's Bottled Root Beer. THE BAD: Mac and Cheese like I would get from a box. Fried Chicken was TOO FRIED for us, again, over-cooked and getting harder and dryer the longer it sits out there. Stuffing (not Dressing) and it was tasteless and boring, so couldn't even touch that after the first bite. The Salad Bar was basically Rabbit Food with cheese and dressings. No Options to make it contemporary. A Salad Bar from The 50s. Your in-law grandmother's Desserts, you know those that you don't necessarily look forward to on Holidays. A lot of pudding types with whipped cream toppings and fillings. Very "old school" 50s stuff. Nothing looked appealing. Standard cherry pie and a strange apple ? Cut squares of a few different kinds of cake and only the chocolate looked moist. Only one piece sitting there and it was gone before I could turn around. The older couple that run this place, run it with a vengeance. They have 2 Front Doors and if you come in the wrong door, you will be reprimanded to come up to the counter and then told to move away from a display table. That was almost enough to make us leave & a party of 4 behind us. 2 other people had just left. We remained calm to check out the food. To sum up our/my review. WAY OVER PRICED for the quality of food, but maybe OK for QUANTITY if you can put it away. 20.00 per person with a drink was just OUTRAGEOUS. BEEN THERE DONE THAT for GOOD OL ROUTE 66. I was OK with the mashed potatoes, green beans and tomatoes. JANIS HATED IT.

Historic Route 66 the Ariston Cafe sine 1924 has had many years of practice and it shows!! This sweet stop on Route 66 has many desserts and good home cooking. We ended up here in a Sunday and did the brunch Buffett.. Great fried Chicken and green beans... They are famous for the baklava.... But had already run out for the day.... So I am making plans to come back again to try this famous dessert!!!

This is most certainly the best place to stop for a meal between Springfield and St. Louis. Admittedly, that isn't saying much but this place is truly a gem. They've been around for decades, have that old-time feel and produce really good food if you order right. Hint - ordering Mexican food here does not constitute ordering right. Over the years I've tried a good number of their offerings while traveling I-55 but on this occasion I had their french dip sandwich. I enjoyed the shaved beef and au jus but the sandwich was nothing too special. On previous visits I've had some really good steaks (try the NY strip with whatever topping most appeals to you), coconut shrimp, reuben sandwich, etc. One note: do not leave this place without having dessert. They make most of the stuff themselves and it is always amazing. I'm not a big fan of tres leches cake but the wife thinks their version is amazing.

We stopped on a Friday night. They had several specials that all sounded wonderful but my husband & I had the regular pork chops and hamburger steak (bacon wrapped). I had Brussel sprouts with my meal and it was delicious! The decor and stories are worth the trip! The dessert tray looked awesome but we didn't have room left to try one! Next time!

This place is overpriced for what it is. The food quality is decent but I had a few complaints. First the salad bar didn't have the standard items you would expect such as tomatoes or ham. The pieces of meat that look like ham bits actually taste like hot dog. Hmm. The soup was decent. The steak was a decent cut but they didn't cook it the way I asked (medium well) and I thought the price was high. The kids meals were ok, but they brought the wrong thing. They did fix it however when we complained. The dessert menu was extensive and the family liked all of their choices. So this is a place to stop off if you want a little bit of Americana, but judging by the age of the clientele and the quality of the food, I bet this place will be gone in 5 years. We will not be going back.

Have eaten at this restaurant a several times while working in the area. Did not have anything that was better than mediocre at best. The food was slow to come out of the kitchen on more than half of my visits, food taste is blah not very well seasoned and the management was not attentive at all to food wait times, happiness with food quality. The salad bar lacks selection of common items you would find at most salad bars. The price for the quality of food does not create a good value. the only bright side was the service staff was friendly and hard working.

Just looking for a cafe and came across this great restaurant. The food was just great and our server friendly and helpful. Still run by the same family that had it in 1926. Don't leave without getting desert.

Service was a little on slow side, however the delightful staff more than made up for it. The head staff was attentive to our needs with 3 kids one who was being disruptive. Boys said the corn dogs were awesome. I had the fried chicken that was very good.

My Mom is originally from Hillsboro. We were in town to visit family and go to Old Settlers. In all the years I have been to Hillsboro I don't think I have ever been to Ariston or if I had it was so long ago I don't remember. We were a large party of 14 and I want to give our waitress Sam a shout out because she dealt with everything like a pro. There is a pretty wide variety of entrees available and on both visits I took advantage of the included soup and salad bar. One visit I had the fried chicken which was pretty good and another visit I had the halibut. The dessert tray is kind of insane so save room for that. If you have time and are stopping in Litchfield I would definitely make a point of coming here definitely one of the nicer options in the area!

Linda B. Amazing!! We were traveling between Lebanon & Springfield, IL and were running late!! Arrived at 8:59/9:00pm and they close on Thursdays at 9:00pm. Most places would turn you away, but not here! They were great and the food was fabulous!! Also had a soup & salad bar! Save room for desserts they are out of this world! Wish I lived in Lichtfield! Will stop again on our way to St. Louis!

Oh Ariston Cafe, why do you have to be so far away from me? I was in the area for a couple days and wanted to avoid another chain restaurant. Everyone that I asked, told me to go to the Ariston. I am so glad that I did! So cute! The wait staff was adorable, helpful, prompt, extremely attentive and just overall wonderful! I was dining alone, but that was perfectly fine here. My iced tea glass was never empty. The waitress suggested a crispy rice noodle shrimp appetizer with a tasty side sauce. It was delicious! The soup & salad bar was nice. Nothing fancy, but fresh. I moved on to the fried chicken with American homefries. Perfection. The homefries almost brought me to tears. They were just like my Grandma used to make. AND, all white meat was only $.50 more! YUMMY!!! Finally, the lovely waitress brought over the dessert tray. For $3.95, I could have a delicious dessert. I was stuffed. But, I learned that about half of them were homemade, so I took a homemade cherry cheesecake slice/slab back to the hotel with me. Don't hesitate to head to the Ariston Cafe! Smile, enjoy the hospitality and great food!

Highly recommended if you are on a Route 66 tour - or just driving down the 55 and in need of lunch or a hit of sugar. We had read about the restaurant in a Route 66 posting and saw their good rating on Yelp, so made a point of stopping in for dessert on the drive home. I'm giving this place a 5 star rating, for a few reasons: 1) Original, well maintained decor and style. 2) Great historical value 3) Route 66 souveniers 4) Good "home cooked" food - yum! 5) The people Let me say more: The building is unassuming from the outside - there are a few hints to the restaurant's relevance to Route 66 but they are subtle. Walk in, and - other than the people - you feel a bit transported back in time. The booths are original, as is the lattice work and other elements - all wonderfully maintained. Stop and chat with the son of the original owner, and he'll show you the ledgers from when the restaurant was built and a menu from the year he was born. They've embraced their contribution to Route 66 history, and have on hand Route 66 souvenirs - t-shirts, pins, mugs, hats etc. While we were too full from two days of non-stop eating in St. Louis, we were able to wolf down desserts - all made on the premises and all fresh. Yum! Looking over the menu there was lots to choose from, and we'll stop again if we are in the area to check out more of the menu. The people: Our whole trip has been filled with great people. This restaurant topped it off, from our very wonderful young waitress, to the current owner, who, as mentioned above, stopped and chatted with us, telling us about the restaurant, asking us where we are from, and telling us about the visitors he gets. This man takes the time to talk to many of his guests - he knows where they are from and who they are personally. A perfect hospitality industry talent, doing what he was meant to do. (What I'm saying is: I respect the man.) The package, as a whole, gets my 5 star vote. Would I recommend: Yes - it is a Route 66 heritage gem. Would I return: Yes.

I grew up eating here for special occasions and it's still one of my favorites when I go back to visit family. Their fried chicken is second only to the enchiladas on the menu. The enchiladas are made with chili. I realize that this sounds crazy but it's something that absolutely works! Some of the reviews of the salad bar are less than positive but let me tell you the ranch is something special. I actually order a mason jar of it to go, it's that good. The old school charm is something many places try to replicate but you can tell that is genuine here. The waitresses and waiters bring around a dessert tray at the end which is impossible to resist: homemade baklava...need I say more? The owner is almost always there and he makes sure everything is in tip top order. Definitely a highlight of the area and Route 66.

Great place. Stopped on our way back from Edwardsville to Chicago. Our server was very attentive, friendly and her recommendation for the pork tenderloin sandwich was spot on! No frozen patty here, homemade and delicious! I had the Sunday special baked chicken, juicy, tender and the brussel sprouts were yummy! Great prices too! Excellent place to eat, can't wait to go back on our next trip back to Edwardsville.

We stopped here on our way back from St. Louis because it was so highly rated. The decor is old-fashioned, but not in a good way. It's not old enough to be cute, but just old enough to be dirty looking. Very dingy on the inside. The salad bar was pretty good, but the rest of the food not so much. Nothing had any flavor at all. I had the fried chicken and mashed potatoes and the entree had no seasoning whatsoever. The complaint was the same from everyone else at our table. Would go elsewhere next time.

I decided to stop here on my trip down Route 66 from Chicago to Saint Louis. I went simple and had the cheese burger. The burger was good, but nothing special. A burger, fries, and a root beer was $10. Not a cheap burger, maybe a little high for the burger. There was a post meal offer of deserts. They looked GOOD! Though I was saving my sweet tooth for later. The people were very nice. The place had a nice old fashion feel to it, a good thing. If I traveled through here on a regular basis I may go again.

Stopped here on our drive between St. Louis and Chicago because we found it on Yelp. Probably wouldn't have gone otherwise, but it was great home cooked food. The restaurant is a bit dated, but everything was clean and the menu and food presentation was modern. Everything we got tasted really good. Unfortunately the prices are modern too but not anything you wouldn't expect from chain restaurants - total for 3 of us (2 adults and 1 kid) for 3 entrees, 3 drinks and 2 desserts was around $35. Would definitely go back if we were in the area again.

I stopped enroute back to Chicago on Mother's Day and I was very pleased that I did. The place itself is nothing fancy...it's old, but the food was delicious. The salad and soup is self-serve and I had the best pickled beets ever. The soup was certainly homemade and the bread was super fresh. I ordered the grilled pork-chops, which came with fresh, homemade chunky apple sauce, and they hit the spot. I never expected gourmet dining and I didn't get it, but what I did get was a really well done, simple meal, that was akin to something my grandma would have made. Plus, when I declined another refill of iced tea, siting that I had a long trip ahead of me, the waitress asked if I would like an iced tea 'to go'! Now that's service!!! If I'm passing by that way again, I'm going back to this place again.

Wow - I kind of thought that I would be the first to review this little obscure gem in this little obscure town. Well, my pleasure to indulge you with a review of the Ariston. In case you didn't already know, this is a Route 66 landmark, dare I say classic. Litchfield is home to lake Lou. Our family has a little weekend home on the lake and I have rocking Litchfield for, hell, almost 20 years. Shit, that make me feel old. Here it is: The Ariston rocks America! I will confess that I am bias. I have been here over 30 times easy and have ordered that same thing at least 25 of those times. Can you say Mexican Plate? If you can, you are in good shape. FYI forgo the tamale for an extra taco. That's how to do it - Great small town feel - cheap - good and save room for some cheesecake or other delightful, delectable, sweet morsel that will surely be offered to you post meal. This is not fine dining and it is not supposed to be. It is what it is and it is doing it and doing it well. If you ever take 55 north and get hungry around exit 52, get off the road and go here.

Easily the very best patty melt I've ever encountered. I would only expect the best, though, for a Rt. 66 landmark that's been around since 1924! They've got to be doing a few things right at the Ariston Cafe--and lucky for me, the patty melt was one of them. We make the trip from Chicago to St. Louis on a pretty regular basis and try to avoid chain restaurants when our hunger gets the best of us (with the exception of Culver's 'cause I just can't stay away). On our last trip, we *almost* passed up the Ariston Cafe for another little family restaurant, but I'm so glad we gave this historic restaurant a try. I expected a roadside diner, but Ariston Cafe is actually a "fancy" small town restaurant! Dim lights, white table cloths, specials boasting filet mignon and portabello mushrooms, full bar and wine menu--this was not a greasy spoon. In addition to the dinner specials, Ariston makes everything from Italian to Mexican food to open-faced sandwiches to hamburgers to old-time favorites like liver and onions. They also boast a salad bar, which seemed to be the big draw the night we were there. I skipped all that jazz for the patty melt by which all other patty melts will be judged--crisp, buttery, grilled Russian rye, sweet grilled onions and a patty with cheese, all likely enhanced by the flavors of their well-seasoned griddle. I'd get it again in a heartbeat. I'd also like to try one of their ice cream drinks at the bar lining one of the walls, but as it was freezing outside, I wasn't quite in the mood for a Brandy Alexander. I have a feeling the folks at the bar know how to make a good, old-timey cocktail. And, last but not least, I have to mention the ladies' bathroom. Very clean, extremely pink and nice and toasty, thanks to a space heater right below the (wait for it...) changing table! My little guy appreciated a warmed table on such a chilly day. If you're tooling around I-55 (or actually cruising Route 66, which I highly recommend) and aren't interested in giving your cash to some blah fast food chain, visit The Ariston Cafe. Have a patty melt for me.

If you go ask for heather. She took great care of us. We ordered a portabello mushroom and it was amazing. The dinner was good and the salad was very good. We were so full so we took a slice of cheesecake back to the hotel. Which turned out to be amazing :)

If I could give a 4.5 I would. This is a great stop between St. Louis and Springfield, a short distance from I-55 and part of Route 66 lore. I have been here several times over several years, and always been greeted by the owner, had good service, and good food. I especially recommend the patty melt, but they have a salad bar and a wide-ranging menu. I remember spreading out the Sunday paper at my table and felt comfortable doing so. Definitely recommended.

Great little place on Rt. 66. Homey feel, great service, and good food. Decided to stop after reading the reviews. I got the Greek salad and Ma got the hot beef sandwich. Salad was nothing to write home about but it was fresh and the dressing was delish. Ma liked her sandwich and said the beef was very tender. Everyone was saying how good the sweets looked so I tried the in-house made cherry cheesecake, yum! For two to eat it was 26.00, wasn't bad. So if you're on the road don't waste your money on fast food. Sit down, Slow Down and Eat!

Drawn in by the neon lights, and not having many other options that weren't chains, we decided to come here. Great quaint diner-like setting. Greeted at the door with a long list of Sunday specials. Our waitress was wonderfully friendly and attentive. Hubby and I both got the fried chicken which was pretty tasty. The kids meals were good size and fair priced. My only complain was the salad bar was pretty skimpy and was the only veggie choice offered with my dinner. Personaly I would have preferred the local corn promoted on the special board. Had fabulous desserts - I had multiberry pie, hubby had apple pie ala mode, and kiddos had peanut butter cup pie. As we were leaving we were invited to sign guest book that had people visiting from 5 countries and 4 different states that day alone. It's a historic rt 66 restaurant so they get lots of out of way visitors. They even have a full bar with several bottled beers domestic and import. Cool place and i'd totally go again!
