On 9/7 my husband and I ate here and got severe food poisoning. There have been incidents at others restaurants in the area very recently and it is probably linked to the contaminated lettuce that is being reported. When my husband tried to contact the manager working the next day, he was told the manager was very busy and was hung up on several times. A complaint has since been lodged with the Kane County Board of Health.

We stopped at this place on our way back home. I was craving a quick bite of cheap authentic Mexican food. Ive know Elgin to have a few Mexican places so I yelped and came across this place. From the appearance of the place it seemed pretty authentic, they also had a variety of food from tacos, burritos to tongue and seafood. My husband ordered 2 chicken tacos and I ordered a huarache with asada meat. The tortillas were pretty cheap tasting, ad my huarache had a pound of lettuce with some kind of cheese but I was disappointed it wasn't crumbling cheese. The salsa was a red one, not very spicy or with much flavor. I don't think I'll make a stop here but 2 stars for the price. $9.57 for those things.

Really good and delicious food, really good service, pretty clean, but the air conditioning can make the place real cold but I recommend it.

I am giving this restaurant 1 star when actually they deserve ZERO. I am rating this visit for this experience only. I frequently visit this establishment at night and the steak tacos are delicious.......rated #1 out of anywhere I have ever had Mexican dinners. Warning: DO NOT EAT HERE DURING DAY HOURS. The cook does not know how to prepare food. Our tacos were tasteless. It was like I was eating at a completely different restaurant! The day cook needs to be fired or trained by the night cook. Now I understand why this place was getting negative reviews

I was heading out to dinner with my daughter today. We were headed to Los Comales in Elgin, but decided to give Tacos La Flor a try. This is a pretty small place. We were seated, and our waitress brought chips and salsa to the table. The chips were fresh and warm, and the salsa was pretty decent, with cilantro and onion. We placed our orders; my daughter opted for steak tacos, and I ordered one each, steak, pastor and chorizo. These are Mexico City style with mini corn tortillas. The pastor was tasty, and had a nice tender texture. They were happy to hold the pineapple as I requested. The flavor was very much of BBQ. It was very good, but different than the style of other nearby restaurants like Los Comales. The steak was excellent. It had really good flavor, and was very tender. My daughter also gave the steak a strong "thumbs up". The chorizo taco was also very good. Again, the style of the chorizo was different than I expected. Usually, chorizo is quite salty, strongly seasoned, with a tart kick from the vinegar. It's also finely ground like ground beef. The chorizo at Tacos La Flor, is more of a solid sausage texture. It had a nice flavor, but was not as spicy or as salty as is typical. It was also leaner, and not as greasy as what I usually get. This was a nice change of pace. I like both styles, but I would have no problem ordering again. The waitress was attentive, but she spoke very little English. She had no problem understanding the order, and was able to customize my tacos. I attempted to ask here about the different style of chorizo, but I did not have much luck with that. In any event, she was quite pleasant, and the food was delivered to the table hot and as ordered. The price was reasonable. I'll most likely be back!

Got food poisoning from a burrito the first time I ate here, it was definitely the last..

This is really disappointing to do but La Flor was our favorite taco place for years. My wife has even posted very complimentary things here. Unfortunately we both are currently very ill from steak tacos we ate yesterday. We have been extremely sick for over 16hrs now. I have tried calling to tell them twice now and Monica hung up on me the first time immediately when I explained our experience. I called back and she answered again. I asked to speak w the manager and she kept asking "the manager". When I said yea she kept telling me he is busy. She hung up again. Terrible service and we have a legitimate concern. Now we are going to the Health Dept. This is really disconcerting since we have loves this place for a very long time.

If I would've written this review 5 years ago, hands down I would have given La Flor 5 full stars. I used to frequent this pace on at least a bi-weekly basis. Ordered food for pickup that was always ready hot and fresh, and more than enjoyed the late-night reunion with everyone I knew at 2 AM. I'd have to say that since La Flor cut their hours from being open 24 hours, down to closing at 11 or 12, not only the appeal, but the quality of the food has gone down for me. Don't get me wrong, I will still stop in for some tacos or a burrito special from time to time, but it's just not the same.

This happened last year, but it needs to be known. Went there late night, with a group of friends. They advertise (on the wall) a $2.50 quesadilla; that's what I ordered. We ate (food was decent) but after I paid my bill, I see that I was charged $5 for the quesadilla. When I tried to talk to the girl, she said that she brought me a different quesadilla and that because I ate it, I was basically out of luck. She was beyond rude and literally turned her back to me, and ignored me when I asked to speak to a manager. That was the *2nd* time something like that had happened to me there... the first time, I had ordered the advertised 99 cent tacos. Once again, I was charged more for them because they added tomatoes... something you don't think you are going to be charged for when THEY ask if you want them. They refused to adjust the bill and were rude. Lesson #1: always check the bill before paying it. Lesson #2: don't go to Tacos La Flor. Tacos Comales (2 blocks away) is much better.

The food here is excellent! I have tried many items on the menu, including the steak tacos, tortas, guacamole, and horchata. I loved all of it. Any time I have a craving for Mexican food this is the place to go

Very basic Mexican food, there food is pretty bland, taco bell level. They are open late which is a plus.

With the plethora of Mexican restaurants in Elgin, it's very sad that the yelp reviewers are calling this the best. I went with chicken and bbq beef tacos and i was majorly disappointed. They do not have flour tortilla options, only corn. The place is a dump, which can be overlooked if the food is amazing. I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Cheap, yes... quality, tasty food? no. ps for much better "cheap" Mexican may i recommend El Rodeo in Streamwood

Decent tacos and better than average burritos. Every time I have been here they made my order from scratch. Good to know it's not just sitting in a steam table for hours.

This is my favorite Mexican place in Elgin. It's not very fancy but the server is always very nice and attentive. It's atmosphere is similar to a hot dog place except with mexican food, music and soap operas. :) They have a burrito special for $5.99 where you get a burrito with FRIES?? I got a chorizo burrito special even though i wasn't sure about the idea of fries with a burrito and OH MAN. These fries are out of this world. And more importantly, the chorizo burrito was probably the best burrito i've ever had. It wasn't too dry or too greasy which is easy to do with chorizo. it was perfect, and the other toppings are evenly distributed through it as well. Every other thing i have ordered has been delicious as well. The Gordita, awesome. The cheese enchiladas suizas were really delicious, it tastes like they chop up pablano peppers and put them inside with the cheese, so flavorful. The chips that come on the table are pretty alright, however the hot sauce they give you to put on them is really great, it tastes slightly of barbecue and hot sauce together but in more of a watery Mexican style. They also have a combo platter for $5.99 where you get enchiladas and chili relleno with rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, bean and avocado. Also very good.

  • Dee B.

Yes, they are right down the street from me so I have a bit of a bias, however...they never fail me. The tacos are great (although you have to ask them not to put letus and tomato). no fail mexican food at a great price.

My husband and I just moved to Elgin from Chicago and we've been dying to find a place to replace our favorite Mexican restaurant in Chicago. Finally, Tacos La Flor is our replacement! We have been there a couple times and had the 3 steak taco dinner and orchata. The steak is tender and flavorful! The taco dinner tasted great!! The portions are large and the price is cheap at just $5.99!! The orchata tasted great too. I've had orchata at many places and this is definitely one of the best tasting. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy but the staff is friendly and food comes out fast. Highly recommend for great tasting Mexican food!! It has a parking lot too so no worries on parking.

Best steak tacos in Elgin. If there's time and money to spare (and not in the mood for chinese at Gee and Jay's across the street), my friends and I always pop in here. 4 stars for not being open 24 hours now.

Ive had many great takeout meals from La Flor, very consistent and great value. Very good stuffed peppers, excellent salsa. Chicken dish's also very nice. THE taco place around here. Not much for eat -in, but a great take-out place.

Had the al pastor today, and it didn't taste like it used to. Tasted like barbecue pork. I sure hope that's not a permanent change.

oh my...the hubs and i just moved to elgin and were so excited to start trying all the mexican food here. this was the first one we tried and DAMN! it's good. we ordered take-out so we could eat at our lovely new dining room table. i had the al pastor and steak tacos and they were delish. the pastor was juicy and packed with flavor and the steak was tender and not stringy at all. my husband had the lengua tacos and he was in heaven. we had rice and beans, guac and chips (still warm!) and the cashier threw in some of the spicy pickled carrots. it was stellar. can't wait to go back! (i promise to try some other places too!)

A great little place for carry out. The food is authentic and reasonably priced. My favorite is the enchiladas rojas.

  • Ani B.

on a recent drive thru trip, we stopped here because of all the yelpies recommendations. And we are glad we did. I ordered the chile relleno taco; so unusual and innovative. It came with lettuce and tomato on top in a flour tortilla.. And it was great. No sides tho. Hubby got the enchiladas=2 cheese/2 chicken, and it came with rice, beans and a small pile of lettuce "salad". this food is about as authentic mexican food as you can get, so the tortilla are quite small, maybe 3-4". I think the rice was some of the best i have tasted with a spice i could not identify. Daughter ordered the bean burrito which had rice, beans, lettuce and avocado inside, (maybe more) and it was quite large but no extras. She said it was good. this is a place where the local mexs eat. There was one other non-mex lunching here. I would recommend it - Great food. And, yes, they did serve a bowl of chips, and a warm wonderful stewy salsa, plus a pickled carrot/onion salad to share. Shabby well used booths, no movable tables so I don't know how well a group would manage. Have a tv but only spanish speaking shows. Daughter could understand but not us gringos. Give it a try!

This lively 24 hour dump has the best gorditas. One Sunday late morning my wife and I were eating and somehow struck up a conversation with the folks at the table next to us. They were mexican transplants and I think one of their kids caught our eye. We love kids..... Anyway, they said, hey, you have to try a gordita here, it's what they do. And, they proceeded to give us one from their order, and I've been hooked ever since. They also have excellent home pickled peppers and carrots, excellent smokey salsa roja, and the chips served with salsa cruda are always good, too. They'll bring lime wedges on request. My favorite order is for two gorditas - one carne asada and the other al pastor. The standard fare of giant burritos, fresh corn tacos, flautas, etc will be sure to please. Of course you also get chips, salsa, peppers.... excellent! I've watched this location go through many changes over the years, and this owner has the right idea... in fact writing this convinced me to go tonight! I have to say though, this is an authentic place, and the clientel can seem a bit rough at times, but I've never had a problem.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
