The Yelp description of a 2 star review is, "Meh. I've experienced better." That exactly sums up my feelings about this place. I ordered mushroom soup, a sensation salad (spring mix, cranberries, walnuts, feta), and the spinach and artichoke dip. The mushroom soup was nothing to write home about (I'd just had much better mushroom soup the night before at Global Gourmet one block away, so I had a good comparison point). They claim the soup is finished with white truffle oil, which I didn't get a whiff of. The salad came with apple bits, which I'm pretty sure were not listed on the menu (being allergic to fresh apples, I think I would have noticed and avoided it had they mentioned apples!). The spinach and artichoke dip mostly just tasted like mayonnaise (to be fair, they do list mayo as one of the ingredients, but it seemed to be the dominant flavor to me). The prices were on the higher side, and I don't think the quality of the food warranted that.

If I had to select a restaurant in Carbondale for a date, or to take a friend from out of town, or just a nice place to go I would select the Newell House. The menu has a wide variety and there is a good wine selection as well. My personal dinner favorite is the stuffed salmon with the black rice. Downstairs there is a bar and sometimes live entertainment. I especially like when Carlos Alberto performs with his acoustic guitar. They have a wide selection of martinis if that is your thing (I am a little spoiled by and unbeatable martini at the Portland City Grille - if you ever get out to Oregon!)- but also a full bar. The food is good, the wine is good, the atmosphere is good. Try it!

Working my way up to visit the family in Illinois. I went to SIU in college and traveling back through my old stomping grounds. This is a place I always love coming to. The first time I came here, my parents brought me for my birthday I think. Anyway, we were all blown away by it. The vibe is great. Upscale, but not pretentious at all up stairs. Downstairs is The Grotto, which is a really cool and funky lounge. Only open on the weekends, and you can only get aps. Though a great spot for a drink before dinner. They have also had some jazz bands play every once in a while. The food is great. I have enjoyed different pastas, and the pork chop is amazing. They have a really good lunch menu too. The prices are really good for what you get as well. Well, maybe I am just use to Houston prices. Though I remember it never being that crazy expensive, even when in college. Probably the best restaurant in Carbondale.

Second update: received a nice email from the co-owner, Chris. He apologized profusely and stated that not only was the person completely out of line, but apparently mistaken as they do work to accommodate GF. I appreciate the effort and offers of compensated meal, but we still won't be going back. Just wanted full disclosure of his attempts at reconciling the situation. Updated: I called to speak to a manager and was informed that the man who was so rude is the manager. Original review: We have a party of 12 coming in Friday night, and I, being celiac, called to find out in advance what would be available gluten free in the menu for me. Two years ago, they were wonderfully accommodating and I had an amazing steak. Tonight I didn't even finish my sentence and was interrupted by "shrimp cocktail". Oh, wow, is that it? I was then very rudely told that I could have plain fish, a slab of chicken, or a salad with no dressing. I'm fine with restaurants not being able to accommodate me. It's not their place to cater to every disease or allergy out there. I AM NOT by any means fine with being treated as rudely as I was over the phone. My original plan was to eat ahead and buy a couple of cocktails. Now I'll go and visit with my friends, spend no money, possibly bring a baked potato from McAllister's with me, and make sure to tell everyone I know to stay away from this place. Just because you're one of the few "date night" restaurants in town doesn't give you the right to be jerks.

I ate dinner here a few weeks ago when I was visiting family... the food, service, drinks, everything was excellent. I had the Chicken Picatta for dinner with a throw-you-up-against-the-wall (or something like that) martini. The martini didn't throw me against the wall, but it was delicious. Everyone else had variations of steak, and they were all raving about it. Our group was a little ridiculous (we'd been at wineries all day... it happens), and our server was great. I don't get to Carbondale very often, but if I return, I'll do my best to stop in again.

I read the reviews and I have to disagree with the ones who rated less than 4 stars. I was greeted very nicely by the sweet hostess. Seated and was given some very nice suggestions on wine. I chose the OZV Old Vine Zin off of suggestion of the waiter. Very good suggestion to go with my filet. The Caesar side salad looked and tasted awesome!!! Their house bread is very fresh and warm. Holy smokes. The filet was perfect. Medium rare just as i ordered. The hashbrowns au gratin was a nice addition to the sautéed green beans. As I engulf that amazing meal my awesome waiter Heath suggests a dessert. Being a fat kid I tend to stay with liquid dessert but I tried it. Get this. Bourbon ice cream, bourbon soaked bacon then sugared. Heaven. The price was great the food was great. The service was awesome. I hear the tables round me compliment the other servers when the server walks away. This is the place to be. Now. Onward to the Grotto. It's not Hef's place but it will work!

My husband and I had a very pleasant experience here. The service was amazing and the food was great too. Bonus, they have creme brûlée, my all time favorite desert. This is by far one of the better restaurants we eaten at in Carbondale. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I will be coming back very soon!

So, on a trip down to visit my alma mater, we happened upon this place. I was a little startled that the first question they asked us was if we had reservations. I mean, come on.... this is carbondale. Clearly, we did not have reservations. It was no problem, we were just asked to wait downstairs at The Grotto portion of their restaurant. It was fine down there... no problems. Ordered a drink and only waited a short while for a table. However, once we got upstairs.... rather disappointed. I admit i assumed that since sandwiches and burgers were on the downstairs menu, they must be on the upstairs menu as well. This logically made sense to me as the app's were the same on both menu's (checked on their website). When we reviewed the upstairs menu, i noticed burgers were not even an option. When I asked, very sternly our waitress stated that Newell House and The Grotto have different menu's. Ok... but you share one kitchen, you tap beer from the same place.... If my husband wanted salmon and i wanted a burger, we should have been able to get served at our upstairs table. I can understand them wanting to separate their guests from those who want fine dining and those who want apps/sandwiches and a drink. Although, I dont know if i would call it fine dining since the kitchen referred to the cheese on my burger as "yellow cheese", not chedder. As you can see, we decided to go back downstairs to eat as the majority of us wanted burgers. Our waitress/bartender was very nice and pleasant. I just dont buy their "separate restaurants" concept. Since my burger was rather forgettable, I dont ever see us coming back here. Sorry Newell House... but, fail.

In town to drop my daughter off for college. Found this place last night. Great food, atmosphere, and service. Good wine list, too. Wonderful way for our family to spend dinner together before the big move. We had the potato cakes and shrimp cocktail appetizers. Dinner was smoked salmon, Thai salmon, a tortellini dish, mushroom soup, and Caesar salad. All was delish! The only thing better would have been a gluten-free menu or more g-free options (besides salads).

I live in Texas and booked a reservation for my father at Newell House in Carbondale as a Father's day gift. It was absolutely wonderful, my dad said the food was excellent and the service was even better. They were given a table by the window and treated like a king and queen. Aaron the manager arranged everything for me and really took care of my Dad, thank you Newell House, I would recommend this place to all!!!

Good food, probably the best in Carbondale. This is the place where you would take a date or a business colleague you are trying to impress. The food is always plated beautifully, and the food is not the typical food you find at Chili's. Recipes are tasty and original. I knocked off one star because sometimes the service can be a little iffy or the food has a slight flaw to it. Maybe the ahi tuna was not very chilled when it came out or the dessert with ice cream came almost completely melted, but it is great in general. Steak is always cooked to perfection. The prices are higher than a lot of restaurants around here and deservingly so. You won't see a lot of college students coming here. They are as expensive as Global Gourmet, but with a lot better service.

The place is really cool. .great atmosphere. .service lacked a little but they were pretty busy. .so I understand. ..the girl was running her butt off ..she did a good job really. ..as much as she could. .food came out fast and the stuffed mushrooms were awesome. .I would definitely recommend this place

Only in town for the weekend, we decided to go here for dinner the one night we went out, based on multiple suggestions from people and Yelp reviews. The food was really good, but the vibe in there is just kinda "blah." The bar downstairs called The Grotto is a little creepy because there aren't any windows, not to mention cheetah print carpet. I was in town for the wineries, and will probably pick a different restaurant for dinner the next time around.

Was in Carbondale for an event and found the Newell House on Yelp. There were five of us and I was excited to find a non- chain option. We arrived for our 7:15 reservation and our table was not ready, they sent us down to the Grotto lounge. The lounge was a unique setting and had a good selection of cocktails, beer and wine. After 20 minutes no one had come down to get us so I went up and was told our table was ready. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals, the pork chop was very good. The dessert selection had some unique options and we enjoyed the ice cream and carrot cake. If I return to Carbondale I would go back.

I came to Newell House many months ago in celebration of my boyfriend's white coat ceremony for medical school. It seemed to be one of the "nicer" establishments in Carbondale. There weren't many options so we ended up here. Upon arrival our table wasn't quite ready yet, which was fine. We were happy to enjoy a drink beforehand. We went downstairs to bar called, "The Grotto." This place looked like a moldy old basement with a bar installed. Seriously? Champagne was ordered for the momentous occasion, which was good. I can't can't remark on their mixed drinks. I would not choose to come back here for drinks and ambience. Finally, in the restaurant, the decor was unremarkable. The tables and booths were old and worn. There was nothing beautiful or exciting about the "atmosphere" as other yelpers have written about. My boyfriend and I ordered the shrimp creole as an appetizer, which was actually very good. Our entrees on the other hand were just mediocre. Because beef is king in the midwest, my boyfriend ordered the flat iron steak, and I the filet. I must mention that the rolls served before dinner were quite good. The steaks on the other hand were a bit of a disappointment. Somewhat under-seasoned and overcooked, neither of us finished our entrees. Perhaps my tongue is spoiled from living in New York and Boston for the past few years. I'm happy to shell out cashmoney for a delicious dining experience, but the underwhelming dinner at Newell House has left me little desire to ever return. If looking for a more upscale and delicious dining experience, I would recommend Mary's in Herrin, IL.

Went to Newell's expecting a great meal, especially for the price, and left disappointed and really don't see a return to this restaurant. As far as the interior, while it tried to look quaint, it did look a little worn down. Also, there wasn't that much room. Being a little cramped makes it a little hard to eat. As far as the meal, it was a tale of two meals. For our starter, we had the calamari. It was one of the most delightful starters that I ever had. The calamari was tender, tasty and the sauce was great. Then I came to the steak and the story quickly changed. I ordered the Ribeye. While the menu said that it was in a "garlic butter sauce", it tasted as if it was soaked in olive oil. Both the flavor and texture was that of oil of some sort, and probably olive oil. This made the steak extremely undesirable. As someone who had been employed in a steakhouse, I can tell the difference between butter and oil. This oil did not go with the steak whatsoever. I don't know who in the culinary world recommended with whole "olive oil and steak" concept, they they should never step foot in a kitchen again. This concept is ruining steaks throughout the nation. Hopefully Newell can get off this kick and serve up a steak that tastes like, well, a steak. Especially with a bone-in ribeye, there should be no reason to overload any additional seasoning, butters or oils whatsoever. Service was good, but the steak, which is the main course, earns this place only two stars.

This is probably my worst dining experience since going vegan over a year ago. The service was good, waitress was nice but the food was subpar. There were zero appetizers I could eat and they couldn't make any ingredient substitutes since everything is pre made, which I find to be an issue in and of itself. The only thing on the entree menu I could have was a pasta/zucchini dish. It was basically (canned) stewed tomatoes and pasta, I could have made it at home and it was 14 dollars which I find outrageous. It made me sick immediately after so I question whether the pasta was actually vegan. I asked to sub a salad (that came with my meal) because the one it came with I couldn't have any of the ingredients on. Waitress said yes then charged me for the substitute, not very good or accommodating service. I feel in 2014 a restaurant should have more options available to accommodate all customers and be able to make items if necessary. I was very disappointed in menu options. Definitely not a place to go unless you love meat. I usually can find something tasty anywhere I go, here, not so much.

If you want a $10.00 processed, frozen soy burger then this is the place for you. Or, you could hit up an Applebee's or Friday's and get the same garbage. The burgers were dry, bland and incredibly small. The only thing that was big was the stale, hard roll that they were served on. Service is lackluster. Refills are never offered and take forever to arrive. Service overall is slow. If you want to "impress" someone with how you can over-pay in a Pretentious restaurant then this place in a must visit. If you want a better burger at a much better price then hit McDonalds......you'll be happier.

The food is phenomenal. My dad had a steak cooked rare, and he was raving about it all night. I also had a steak medium rare, every piece of steak melted in my mouth. The atmosphere is gorgeous. It was extremely loud though when we went, that is only because there was a party in the next room. The service is extremely friendly, and they know what they are talking about. Keep in mind that you will be spending $20 a person or more. But the food is well worth the money. I give this place 5 stars. Excellent restaurant for a place like Carbondale.

This is by far one of the best restaurants in Carbondale. It is expensive for a typical college budget but it's a great place for special occasions. We dined here recently and everything was absolutely delicious. We had the spinach and artichoke dip for an appetizer and it was to die for. I also had the strawberry salad and honey glazed salmon (WOW!). Everything was wonderful. The server was very nice and pleasant and the atmosphere was nice. It does get noisy at times. Our only complaint was the portion of wine that my husband was given. It was a very small glass of wine for $7. You might as well just buy a bottle and share it.

I've had dinner at this place with my son quite few times since I moved here and it's been a positive experience each time. They serve prime rib on weekends(yum) and their ribeye is always cooked to perfection. I was surprised to see the Chilean seabass on the menu which is good. My toddler son loved it. Wine list is decent but could've been better. Service is always very attentive and never had a problem. The atmosphere reminds me of one of those bistro type of places in Chicago. I find the crowd little old but I have seen people around my age occasionally.(im 25)Reservation is recommended on weekends and the hostess girl is real nice. They use one of those reservation notebook as opposed to a computer software. (haven't seen it for a while) Overall, this place is one of a kind in Carbondale. Ideal place for a date or if you're hungry.

I went to lunch at Newell House a few days ago and it was...fine. Which wasn't quite what I was hoping for when I spend $50 on lunch. First, the decor seemed busy and overdone. The walls are a putrid shade of green, and there's just too much going on with a huge wall-sized painting on one wall, odd shaped dogs in a painting on the next wall, and leaves climbing up another wall, just too much happening. The tables had awful vinyl table-covers on them which were poorly cut and I could easily see the white lining on all the tables around me. At first I thought it was because we came in for a late lunch and the tables were about to be set for dinner and had been cleared from lunch, but then I realized that all the patrons were sitting at similar tables. As we were leaving around 3:30pm the waitstaff was putting tablecloths on the tables for dinner, but it made me feel a bit under-appreciated as a lunch customer. We waited a good ten to fifteen minutes for a server to come to our table for a drink order, and when I asked about the advertised carafe of wine and the choices he had to go and find out. That seems like the type of thing a server should know before service. We ended up sharing the house Cabernet in a half-carafe and it was delicious, although it came in two glasses because our server broke the carafe. We ordered the artichoke and spinach dip, but it wasn't ready yet because they had just gotten the spinach, so we had the regular artichoke dip instead. It was good, but average, nothing all that special, and the artichoke hearts were too large and it ended up being a bit messy. I ordered the crab-cake BLT and my boyfriend ordered the Chophouse Steakburger medium-rare. The food took a remarkable amount of time to make it to the table, but clearly was brought out as soon as the kitchen got it done. My crab-cake BLT was dry and burnt in several places, the tomato was mealy, but it is off-season so I can forgive that, but the overall execution was mediocre at best. The fries were tasty but greasy and limp clearly having been put in a fryer that wasn't hot enough to make crispy fries. They were coated in herbs and parmesan cheese which was really delicious, so if cooked properly I think they'd be great. My boyfriend's expensive burger was cooked well-done to hockey-puck consistency and was also really dry. The flavors were nice-a garlicky oregano feel to them, and the mushrooms and fried onions were fantastic. I ordered the bread-pudding for dessert which was way too hot, and also, unfortunately, dry. Again the flavors were really nice, but the execution was terrible. Overall I was disappointed but since the recipes were nice and the entrees looked interesting I'll try it one more time for dinner. Hopefully the good chefs work at night.

After reading the other reviews, I must be missing something? The food is ok, the service is slow and unfocused, and the restaurant needs some maintenance TLC. A locally owned competitor to Appleby's and Chilli's. it is OK, but don't expect more.
