Tried the chicken, shredded beef and fish tacos. Prices were moderate for what you get. Flavor were pretty good, of course, we are in Maui and not Mexico, so yeah, it will suffice. The salsa bar has a lot of choices and that is pretty authentic. This location was dirty and filthy, didn't look like it has been mopped in weeks! If they just pay a little more attention to detail, it would be a better experience. When we come back to Maui, I will probably opt out in going here.

Not tasty... and was more a game of find the meat in the burrito than a good meal. Salsa bar was decent.

Thought this place was great if you want to something cheap (for Hawaii), quick and good. Go if that's what you're looking for. We both grabbed the grilled fish taco plate, which came with black beans and rice and chips. Very California. Oh and we grabbed one of every one of their salsas. I was FEELIN' the pineapple paradise salsa, and I mostly prefer really hot salsa so it was weird for me. But it was really good. Though....the fact that we just crossed the street and sat on a bench overlooking the ocean may have made it THAT much better.

good fish, good salsa bar, great tacos and fair prices. This is a no-brainer. We go here often, its easy and fast.

Surfer food shack, or just a way to grab a bite on the go. Next to a Subway, Togos, or other AWFUL type of fast food... this is going to be a solid option. Their crunchy tacos are GREAT quality, decent food, GREAT salsa bar.... service is sort of *whatever*, so to say I don't know if they relish their position. Bbut it isn't an eatery, it's a taco stand, with a lot of options. They do a fine job. I'll be back.

This review is for the Maui Tacos in the Kihei Shopping Center. The quality of the food is subpar. They skimp on meat within the taco and fill it primarily with rice and/or beans. I noticed a steady decline in quality over the past few years. When your food comes out the second you order it, it begs the question of freshness and whether the food has been sitting out for a while. My chips are consistently stale. The thing that got me is that I found a large piece of METAL SCOURING PAD in the food. This is unacceptable and had I eaten it, who knows what could've happened. Unforgivable. Where's the health inspector? One star for poor quality and customer service. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like when it's run by disgruntled/unhappy employees. Never again.

After snorkeling in Makena, we decided to eat Maui Tacos. I had the two taco combo that comes with rice and beans (I got all rice). I had one fish taco and one carne asada taco and both were good, but nothing super special. The fish taco was made to order and fresh. Both were served on a flour tortilla. Overall, it's a place for a quick bite to eat. The restaurant has about 5 tables and some counter space, so it's small and normally crowded inside. There's some pictures of the owner with some celebrities on the wall and it looked like most of the pictures were taken in the 80s or 90s. Paris or Britney haven't eaten at Maui Tacos.

Whoa. I don't know if this is the same Maui Tacos that has received so much positive reviews and is a definite stop by Hollywood Glitterati or if these people just don't know what good tacos are! Anyhow, I ordered the Cabo Fish Tacos as well as the chicken taquitos and a shredded beef enchilada platter. The fish in the fish tacos had a very fishy taste and did not taste fresh at all - the chicken taquitos were rolled like flautas, but these were burned at the ends and had a very soggy chicken filling with not much flavor. The enchiladas were okay, but were very similar to the ones I can get at Taco Cabana back in Texas... The salsa bar was okay, but the pineapple habanero sauce tasted spoiled. The seating was very cramped at this location. This is one of those places that gets so much positive praise, but when you go you leave wondering what were the people smoking who thought this place was awesome. I give it an OVERRATED 2 stars.

No bueno.. Words of a latin guy... So it must be honest. Ordered the fish tacos.. Supposely really famous... Turns out to be doused with some VERY salty dressing. I think they are copying famous Hawaiian dressing, yet failed tremendously! I felt like drinking gulps of salt... Yuck. I do give them props for the yummy salsa bar... And friendly service. In conclusion, do NOT go here, unless you want to drink salt and paid lots of $$$ for a taco!!!

Maui Tacos is a big chain of fast-food tacquerias on the island - all five of them. We went to the one hidden in the Kama'ole Beach Center, and it was pretty good. Not outstanding, but they have autographed pictures of Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone with the owner on the wall. Was there a sadomasochistic seduction scene on Maui in "Basic Instinct" I wasn't aware of? Perhaps she got the ice pick at the ABC Store on the next block. I tried the house specialty, the Lahaina Surf Burrito, an overstuffed concoction of cheese, rice, guacamole, fresh salsa and steak. It was pretty delish, but what it had to do with Lahaina or the surf was beyond my comprehension. It seemed a bit pricy at $7.50. It looks like it's about a dollar cheaper if you go for one of their a la carte specials like the chimichanga ($6.99) or quesadilla ($6.50). The best part was their mini-salsa bar which included a pineapple variation that added a distinctly island flavor. Otherwise, it's pretty standard Mexican fast food. FOOD - 3.5 stars...mostly fresh-tasting and a nice salsa bar but otherwise pretty standard AMBIENCE - 2.5 stars...pretty generic except for the autographed photos on the wall SERVICE - 3 stars...standard hear-your-number pick-up OVERALL - 3 stars...the beach requires a taco now and then

After trying Jawz Tacos, I was curious about this place.... We stopped in for a snack, and I ordered the same thing I had at Jawz, (grilled fish taco.) It was ok, but nothing special. I think I like Jawz better, but as I stated before, everything tastes better when eaten by the beach:)

Went there for lunch and really enjoyed a wet burrito. Customer service, is a different story. Waited for a while to order with no greeting while a cook was right in front of me. Minutes later, someone came from the back room to take my order. I enjoyed the burrito so much I went back again later to bring one back to the hotel for a cheap snack after drinking. Same deal that time, waiting to order with no greeting and someone appearing out of the back minutes later. The cook was obviously annoyed that they were busy, as the only words he spoke were when he was talking to himself complaining about how he isn't going to be able to get his prep work done. To end it all, I got back to my hotel and had the wrong burrito, thanks a lot.

Good sized tacos, but needs the option just to get tacos. maybe something like 5 mini tacos, soft shell

Maui Tacos was yummy. It's your typical order-at-the-counter style taco place, with an array of salads, tacos, burritos, etc. I got the mango salad, but asked to add bbq pork and to omit the taco shell. They happily obliged and the salad was really good, especially the pork. My boyfriend had a taco with shredded beef and another with fish. He liked the fish but preferred the sauces and flavoring on the beef taco. Both were good though. We also both enjoyed the extensive salsa bar, which had several hot salsas, several medium, a couple mild, and some extras like jalapeños, limes, onions, etc. Would definitely return here next time we're in Maui!

Maui Tacos is great not because it's gourmet, but because it's a solid meal for under $5 on Maui. Clearly these do not rival the best tacos in California, but you have to put things in perspective. Do you want to pay $16 for great fish tacos at a casual restaurant or do you want to pay $3 for average tacos in a hole in the wall stand right next to the beach? The Taco Bell comparisons are spot on. Imagine Taco Bell but with fresh homemade ingredients and an outstanding salsa bar. Leave your Cali Mexican food snobbery back on the main land.

I have gone to Maui Tacos twice in the last week On the first visit I had the fish burrito. The fish had an off smell and taste. For my second visit I had the chicken taco salad. The chicken was old and dry, and the taco shell was over cooked. It's nice that they are one of very few places that don't charge for a refill on the soda fountain but at and average of $12 per person they should have it covered.

A week later & 2 days before I returned home to the Mainland, I hit this Taco establishment up once again. This time I went for the $9.00 chicken burrito (hold the guac / add a little sour cream) & this indeed was a tasty burrito. By this time in my trip I am used to being overcharged for every single thing possible to purchase in Maui. I am more than happy to Fork over nearly a $10 spot for this tortilla torpedo. Despite the slightly over-priced menu, this place serves up some pretty decent grub.

Excellent pulled pork burrito. Fun salsa bar. Very fast service. Dessert is another story. They were out of Churros both times I was there. The fried ice cream was forgettable. It tasted ok but wasn't fried correctly. The outer coating was cold and soggy. Stick to the main courses

If you are looking for cheap good food in Kihei, do not hesitate to stop here. I had the pulled pork bowl and it was awesome. The restaurant is not the nicest but the food is worth the cramped space. Highly recommend!

  • Sissy T.

Ordered the fish tacos with cabbage no beans!!!! Yum - fish was fresh and tasty!! Hit the spot and two was more then enough. $5 bucks per taco is a killer price for all of the meat. Would go back but tomorrow but it is our last day! Gave the place four stars for lack of seating and no AC!

  • Marc C.

Maui Tacos is good for a quick meal. It's a bit overpriced for the quality food you get, but it will fill you up. I had the Fish Tacos (Hard Shell). The Fish was good (4 star worthy), however they dress it with way too much sauce that overpowers the fish taste all together. I also had a side order of a soft taco with beef. This was subpar compared to what I'm normally used to in carne asada. The beef wasn't very flavorful, but I guess I should expect this with a mexican food place in Hawaii. The salsa bar, contrary to what others are saying about it, was WEAK. All the salsas tasted watered down and lacking substance. The most interesting salase was the Pineapple salsa, but it still lacked any type of differentiating taste. It just tasted like blended pineapple. While I do appreciate that they offer cilantro, onion, jalepeno, and other items to add to your salsa, the salsa itself was just simply below average. Below average salsa + overpriced food + bad balancing on tacos + subpar beef = 2 star rating.

  • Kim J.

First, i'm biased. I have a Freebirds in my town so the bar is set pretty high. I had the Baja Fish Taco Bowl and my DH had a fish taco. The fish was good. Too bad they slather a mayo-like sauce all over it so you could barely taste the fish or anything else. If the sauce had been good I wouldn't complain... but it was kind of gross. If you order the fish dishes, request them without the sauce and add your own salsa/pico blends from the salsa bar. The entire dish would be much fresher that way.

  • Melanie D.

Good tacos and burritos, it's Mexican food with a Hawaiian kick. Not a sit down place with a large group but it is right across from the beach so there are endless possibilities! If you are a fan of authentic, homemade Mexican food, this won't be what you are looking for but the food and experience is fun.

    (3)
  • Tep M.

The reviews for this place are pretty mixed, but I thought I give it a shot. What a mistake! The cashier was very rude, the food was expensive for the amount that we got and it didn't taste any better than Taco Bell. Seriously, if you want Mexican go to Taco Bell and save yourself a lot of $$$. If you see 4 and 5 star reviews, that's probably from people who never had real Mexican food before - at least that's my explanation for such unrealistic ratings.

  • Pamela P.

I may have a California bias, but seriously whats up with their fish tacos? I don't know what eating cardboard is like but eating that fish taco would sure come close to it. The fish was grilled, and the fish cubes that made it in my tortilla was over cooked and had a rubbery cardboard texture. For all I know it was cubes of lean pork. Total disaster. If anything the sauce in the tacos masked the poor quality of fish. If you've ever had a fish tacos in California, (Rubios counts too!), I'd pass this place, you'll be disappointed. If you need your Mexican fix while in Maui, by all means. Another thing that threw me off, is the celebrity photos on the wall. Perhaps a long time ago the food here was actually good that celebs ate here and agreed to have their photograph displayed on the walls? The only thing impressive of this place is their salsa bar.

Great spot for Mexican food in a pinch. I got the enchilada combo (shredded beef) with black beans. My wife got a tostada with pork. Very fresh ingredients, and the salsa bar is a nice feature. And there were "real Mexicans" working the counter, speaking Spanish (which is the last language you expect to hear on Maui).

    (4)
  • ken s.

The fish tacos are very fresh (including the tortillas - a pet peeve when they aren't). The salsa bar is a bonus (corn/mango, sauteed onions, habanero, chipotle, etc.).

    (4)
  • Ryan M.

I got the fish tacos and my wife got the pulled pork beach tacos. If we were going to order again we would have got two orders of the pork tacos. The sauce on the fish tacos was great, but the pork tacos were delicious and the flavor was quite unexpected. I am giving this place 5 stars because it was great bang for your buck.

I really enjoyed my chicken enchiladas with pinto beans and rice. Their salsa bar was pretty good. We ate in which was okay. No ambience for sure. Next time we'll take it to the beach. See- we're coming back.

This place had great fried fish tacos. I had a few drinks at the bar next door before we went there so it might have made it even better. I am not sure why the whole parking lot is 15 min. parking. Small sitting area inside but able to eat there when not that busy. The salsa bar really added to my tacos and I had a good overall experience.

I was starving after a long ride and Maui Tacos was the closest thing open that I was willing to eat. I ordered a vegetarian taco with chips and guacamole. It was the worst meal I've eaten in months. Not only that but the girls working there stared at me with attitude "is that it???" It really felt like they wanted me to get the hell out. Will never go back.

I love this place. Its a must to come here more than once when we are in Maui. Crispy chicken tacos and a mixture of all their salsas. Im not a refried bean fan but I really ejoy theirs. Plus they are cheap and across from the beach.

  • R D.

As I write this, I'm craving a Maui Taco. They're good, fast, and I'm going to take mine right across the street to the beach at eat it while watching the sunset. This location is always filthy though, and that's what takes my rating to a 3 Star. This is one of those places where if they keep the public area this dirty, I try not to think about how they maintain their kitchen...

  • Kenn P.

Cheap eats and not bad at all. You can't ask for anything more when it comes to a decent meal at a decent price. Two fish taco combo with re fried beans only $9.95! It hit the spot and also has a fun salsa bar.

    (3)
  • Janell D.

Yum, yum, yum! At $4 a taco I have no complaints! The "catch of the day" tacos are very tasty and the salsa bar is perfect! Don't plan on eating your tacos in though, it really is a tiny place- come on, you are in Maui, go sit outside!

  • Calvin H.

While strip mall tacos may not be the most indigenous culinary selection on a Hawaiian beach menu, this strip mall taco counter is a particularly popular magnet amongst surf-bums, touristas and the occasional celebrity drop-by. Portions are generous, tasty and filling, and the self-serve salsa bar has a wide range of spicy options to tickle your sun-tanned taste buds. Cheap, cheerful and satisfying. And don't forget to splash it all down with a nice cold horchata.

Decent tacos. A bit high priced but fills up the belly in a pinch.

  • sharon L.

OK, so I'm not really getting all the rave reviews about this place. It's like a chain taco shop in every respect. The food is just ok, nothing really exceptional and the prices are not what I call cheap. Some folks said this place was inexpensive, some said medium, here are some prices and you can judge for yourself. I had Fish Taco, it was medium sized decent amount of fish by mostly iceberg lettuce, no chips or anything came with it $6.95. At my place in California, same thing but less lettuce and with chips $3.95. My daughter had bean and cheese burritto with chips $6.50, basic burrito 7in long and 2 in diameter. My son ahd taco sald really reminded me of the taco salad they do a Taco bell, but this was $8.95. Was by far the most disapointing meal of our trip.

    (2)
  • Kathy O.

Surprised that the fish tacos weren't better. They must make them differently in California. Same chain, just better quality fish. Wasn't terrible, just wasn't great.

As a lifelong resident of San Diego, I am VERY picky about mexican food. Don't get me wrong, I'm not picky about sissy shit like cleanliness and presentation (I've eaten off the carts in Tijuana for crissakes), but if you are going to listen to anyone about Mexican food it shouldn't be someone who lives on the East Coast, Seattle, or anywhere outside of where your run-of-the-mill illeagal alien can hitchhike to in a few hours when starting at the Mexican border. That being said, I must also stipulate, that I like what I call "border mexican" food. This means cheap, simple, and delicious... oh and free blazing hot salsa. If you are the type of person who's favorite mexican food comes from El Torito, On The Border, Chili's, Chipotle, or any other restaurant that basically turned good mexican food into a metrosexual version of it's former self then please don't review this place poorly, as it only serves to display you ignorance. Prior to leaving for Maui I put myself into a Carne Asada coma fearing that I had ZERO chance of good mexican for the next 2 weeks. Thankfully, however, we stumbled upon Maui Tacos for some late night dining. I ordered the fish tacos because I figured we were in the middle of the ocean and locals should be familiar with preparing fish. After ordering I went to the salsa bar and while spooning some Maui Fire Dancer salsa into the little cup I spilled some on my finger, and then proceeded to lick it off. At that precise moment I thought to myself "holy shit, this salsa tastes like cold hawaiian pizza!" Which I must say is one of my favorite things to eat: sweet, spicy, and in perfect balance. I'm not the type who likes "sweet" mexican food either, like that shit that comes from Texas... BOO! But a hint of pineapple in chipotle salsa nearly caused me to wheel the salsa cart out the door and into the back of the rental car. However, I decided I better stick around for the tacos. The tacos, my friends, DO NOT disappoint. As good as I've had, and that puts them in the top tier of all tacos in the world. I read a few reviews from people criticizing the tacos, and I encourage potential customers to disregard those reviews because those individuals reviewing probably would rather have some type of portabello pinenut infused tostada, instead of a good old fashioned mexican grandma (abuela) homemade hearty meal. That is the type of food you will find at Maui Tacos. Creative, but old school as they didn't fuck up what was perfectly fine with the recipe and instead only put a dash of aloha into the pot. The sell a cook book, which we bought, and is also availible on amazon. Besure to have a look at page 26, which I made as soon as I got back to San Diego. Muchas Mahalos!

Dirtiest restaurant I have ever eaten at. Trash on the floor, chairs, and tables. Spilled food and liquid all over the floor, chairs, and tables. Dirt was all over the floor like some had just mud wrestled. I will never go back to this joint again.

  • Callie K.

Got 2 grilled fish tacos, and they were wayy over priced because there was hardly any fish on my tacos, if there would have been more fish it would have been worth it.

  • Kevin G.

I've been going to maui taco for the past 4 years and really like it. I only get the fish burrito (hookipa)..and have never been disappointed. I like the salsa bar and it's never out of any toppings. It's dependable: I know what to expect and it never disappoints.

    (4)
  • Anne K.

It's not anything revolutionary. Just gold 'ol American style Mexican food. They have a small salsa bar.... always a bonus. You have to purchase the chips though and they aren't cheap. The fish tacos were pretty ggod. Like I said nothing to scream about, but I returned for more which means it's good enough.

    (4)
  • Corbin A.

Don't listen to the haters! For a quick lunch bite, this place was great! The food was quite affordable given the high Maui prices and the flavor was spot on. We came from Texas and are pretty critical about Mexican, but for a quick taco or burrito, you can't go wrong with Maui Tacos

    (5)
  • Melissa K.

I love the mahi mahi tacos here. They're kind of small, but if you're hungry after eating one, just buy another one (they're less than $5). The ambience at this place is like nil, but you're across from a beach. So order your mahi mahi tacos, get your salsas, and walk across the street to the beach for an inexpensive, oceanside dinner.

    (4)
  • Alison H.

You get what you pay for here, and that's not saying a whole lot. The tacos are fairly tasty and for a lunch in Maui, everything is well-priced. However, compared to the *real Mexican tacos* we get here in Southern California (and nearby Mexico, of course), Maui Tacos is sub-par at best.

Great mexican food with a Maui flair. Salsa bar was excellent. We ate here 3 times during our week in Maui.

Am from San Diego and I know Mexican food better than most. This is a very good little Mexican place. Its fast, cheap, and delicious. You wont get hammered like the resorts and the food is fresh and yummy.

  • Big Room Nine X.

here we go! Pretty frick'n fresh ahi on the fish tacos. Mexican food fan or not this place has good ahi, great salsa bar, and whatever else that goes into one of these tasty treats. After reading a handful of bad reviews of this place I have to disagree. Not sure how picky one could get about tacos and burritos! They must live a pretty delusional life not appreciating this spot. Maybe they're used to frozen fish being dropped into a fryer... The owner here also owns the bar in the Wailea Marriott. Great place with a perfect view of the ocean and Molokini from the bar balcony.

    (5)
  • Patrick B.

Great fish tacos in a simple fast-food setting where you stand in line to place your order like you would at Taco Bell, etc.

    (4)
  • Julie W.

Order a #3 (2 enchiladas, refried beans, rice) and chips/salsa. I originally ordered chips & queso, but the cashier had no idea what queso was. As I'm from Texas, I would have thought someone who works in a Mexican restaurant would have known what queso was. I ordered one cheese & one chicken enchilada. The menu gives you an option to have refried, pinto, or black beans, but they didn't offer me those options. They just went ahead and slapped on refried beans. Overall, as I'm comparing Mexican food made in Texas, this place was actually pretty good.

    (3)
  • Cory W.

Decent food, but nothing too spectacular. Their salsa bar is definitely the best part about this place. If you want some better Mexican at slightly more reasonable prices go to Taqueria Cruz, right next door in the Dolphin Plaza.

    (3)
  • Rachel S.

I loooooove my Mexican food and this place definitely did the trick AND it is MUCH BETTER THAN FRED's. I've been here a few times on my trips to Maui. Reasonably priced, big servings, and you get chips with your burrito (remember this because the lady at the counter didn't tell me this so i ordered a side). I ordered the Lahaina and added beans for free. It was huge and so yummy. The salsa bar is fully equiped with diverse types of salsas. I'll be back Maui Tacos on my next trip.

Last June my wife and I took a trip with my family to Kihei. Being that my family's idea of adventurous eating is TGIFridays we were a little worried that we would not get to experience any local places. Well once we found Maui Tacos we knew we had hit paydirt. This little inexpensive eatery provided us with more than a few meals that were always satisfying and allowed us to enjoy different tastes. While we did find other great places this one will always hold a special place in our hearts and will be frequented again on our next trip to Maui

very delicious fish tacos; the best I have had in a long time. They were having a bit of trouble with the soda machine, but made up for it in delicious food.

  • Randi S.

I loved this place. four stars only because it was really packed and the service was really slow for takeout...which is probably because it was packed, but it is pretty popular and it seems like they would be able to be more efficient and staffed to handle the crowds. I got tacos with a side of beans and rice. I got my order to go and took it back to our condo rental, and ate the food on the patio right in front of the beach. One of my most favorite times ever...eating tasty mexican takeout food in hawaii on the ocean at sunset.

    (4)
  • Jen D.

Totally cheap, and not bad for what you get. It seemed pretty healthy, just a tortilla, chicken breast, and some vegetables. You can add salsa and stuff yourself from some salsa bar thing they have. The place here seemed not-so-clean and I was the only one there other than the two people running the place - so it felt a bit awkward all eating on my own and stuff. But it wasn't bad at all, just should have got take-out I suppose.

    (3)
  • Joe M.

Most of the places at which our family of four ate on Maui cost 5x to 10x what our meal at Maui Tacos cost. My rating here (and elsewhere) is based on a quality / price ratio judgment. Their new Mango BBQ Pulled Pork taco was very good, as were several of the salsas they provided at the salsa bar and the churros. The Chicken Quesadilla and Chicken taco were good; the Chicken "Lahaina" burrito was just OK. I should note, given the range of other reviews, that we ordered takeout ... and enjoyed the food with some home-made Passion / Orange Margaritas back at our condo.

Simple, straightforward fish tacos that are like a party in a box. Squeeze of lime, a little salsa from the bar and it's game time.

The wife and I were in the mood for Mexican during a recent trip to Maui. Jumped on Yelp and saw a number of (mostly favorable) reviews about Maui Tacos. It wasn't horrible, but after the meal, you have the feeling that you should have eaten somewhere else. I'd love to tell you what I ordered, but it just wasn't memorable.

  • Nomey T.

Fine. Pretty clean, nice people, and the food was prepared fast. We were on this fish kick and just needed a small nibbler to go with some leftovers... so got fish (soft shell) tacos and were satisfied. The tacos were minimally decked in lettuce and something else and we added some salsa to give it some color. A side of beans and rice might be good, if I were just eating their tacos. The salsa bar has a cute hawaiian sprinkle to it, and the mild stuff is actually mild (unlike real mexican and indian places that use "mild" as a relative term!). The chips were not good but oh well; plenty other authentic mexican places also have similarly meh chips. Simple and fast; I'd prolly go again :)

We actually went to the Piilani Village location, but I don't see an entry for it. I hear it is better than the Kamaole center location. My husband and I both had the daily special that day which was a fajita plate. He had his burrito style and it was huge! Everything was very delicious, prepared quickly. Their corn salsa was very, very good as well. We sat at the tables outside that Maui Tacos shares with the other businesses (L&L, Baskin & Robbins).

Mexican food in Hawaii? Yes! You will not be dissapointed. Soft fish tacos are the best! Had to wait about 10 minutes for my order. The place was packed. Many locals too.

Maui Tacos is yum! The salsas are really great. So good I bought the cookbook to make when I got home. Ok, if yoiu want the perfect review of this place, read comments by Jeff C. I agree absolutely!

Eat at Maui Tacos at your own risk. I ordered food today and was appalled at the lack of food safety and handling procedures. After waiting at the counter for 5 minutes, I was rudely greeted by the manager who acted like he was doing me a favor by taking my order. I ordered food and then observed the manager take a towel and wipe down the counter and with the same towel wipe down equipment, the area surrounding the chip warmer and then the salsa line. The manager used the towel to wipe down the salsa area and then pushed excess food and drippings into the salsa trays. I then observed the manager handle chips with his ungloved hands after handling money. I observed the manager use his ungloved hands to rearrange food on plates before delivering them to tables. No individual working the food line wore a hairnet or gloves too. I believe food inspectors would "red" flag this place and check their compliance with applicable food safety rules. If you choose to eat here please stand at the counter and observe your food being prepared, don't be afraid to stop them and ask them to use acceptable food safety guidelines or better yet, don't eat here unless your willing to get sick.

What a disappointment. We sought out Maui Tacos because we had heard it's good. Not only did "we" go, we brought a few visitors along with us who didn't rent their own car. This place is in a food court in a strip mall... not anywhere near the water. The food court had a Vietnamese place, local Hawaiian/Chinese food place, and a Subway also. We only stayed to order because I knew out guests could go to the other places if they didn't want this... But alas we all ordered Maui tacos. I had fish tacos. they were pretty boring and not what I expected. If you're used to Baja fish style tacos you won't like these. These had lettuce and cheap shredded cheese on them... No cabbage, fish wasn't fried, etc. The fish was pretty bland (boiled? broiled? microwaved? grilled? who knows...). The only good thing I had was horchata, which probably was made from a mix. I would've been OK if this was on par with other major chain Mexi places (Baja Fresh, Qdoba, and those types of places), but overall the food was about on par with Taco Bell at best. We were somewhat embarrassed to have brought people here and didn't even want to discuss how bad it was in front of them!

This was our first meal in Maui after checking into our condo. We selected to go here since it was close by. Ordered the two fish tacos and chips to try out their salsa bar. I expected a lot more from fish tacos in Hawaii and thought these were so-so. The fish didn't really taste that fresh to me. The salsa bar was pretty decent though not very big. It was a pretty small shop with various tables to sit in.

While we come from a place where the Mexican food is pretty hard to beat (San Diego), Maui Tacos makes a damn fine fish taco. The fish of the day was Ahi and it was perfectly seasoned and delicious. The potato taco was not as good....but stick with the soft fish taco and you can't go wrong! Don't expect a fancy sit down restaurant. Maui Tacos has a casual atmosphere to match the beach town vibe.

We enjoyed the food. Had the fish tacos and it was great. Husband had a burrito and it was very good as well. Self service salsa was pretty good. The service was good and fast. The place is usually busy but you get your food in a timely manner. It's a great place for a quick bite and run.

Mexican with a twist. You really can't compare this to real Mexican food, you are after all on an island, what can you really expect? If you're looking for your carne asada with onions, cilantro, and pico de gallo on a corn tortilla, stay on the mainland. This is Mexican with a tropical twist and it's pretty refreshing. I've always said that Mexican places are for the most part the same when it comes to dishes. They can all make tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, tortas, etc. While some of the things that distinguish one taqueria from the next are minorly noticeable, the major thing for me has always been salsa. And Maui tacos definitely has salsa that will waken your taste buds. Pineapple based salsas that are both mild & sweet, or hot and tangy, they liven up the food tremendously. I'll admit, w/o the salsa, the food would be very average, however, with the salsa, it's top notch. The tacos are pretty good sized, and the burritos nice and hefty. The asada is more of a dry grill style, meaning it's not super moist, yet somehow tender. The same goes for the chicken. Their fish tacos aren't like the rubio's style where it's a fish stick battered and put in, rather they take an actual fillet and chop it up. This is a small place, so it does get cramped during peak hours, and the parking lot sucks too. I would recommend buying the cookbook for only $10, and try the recipes out at home, they actually turn out pretty well, if not better.

Before Maui became so (over)developed as a tourist destination, no restaurant industry existed. Maui Tacos was one of the first places to establish itself. It may still be trying to live off of it's old reputation. I have low expectations for Mexican food in general; At least, the prices are commensurate with the style and quality of the food. On the plus side, they are open late and, if you don't feel like getting back in the car and driving somewhere to eat, they are within walking distance of many of the condos in Kihea. The best thing I tried was the taco salad. The ahi was chopped up too small and overcooked, but the taco shell was crispy, and the veggies were fresh, and there was an adequate amount of shredded chedar on top. It still gave me indigestion, but maybe I put too much raw onion on it. They have a self-service salsa bar with a large number of condiments and toppings, however the the containers they provide are like those little cups that they use in hospitals to dispense medication, barely large enough for a wedge of lime. There are a lot of autographed photos of celebrities on the wall. Most of them are alkies or stoners like Alice Cooper, Willie Nelson, and Woody Harrelson, which seems appropriate.

I read the ads for this place....created by a world renowned chef that has been featured on national TV shows and magazines. Ok. I drank the Kool-Aid and in I went.... The biggest problem any fledgling McD wanna be restaurant chain is quality control. The first hamburger or taco in this case from Store #001 on day one should taste exactly the same as the 1,000,000th taco from Store #097 five years from now. If it doesn't, the chain is doomed. Like it or not, chain restaurants need to adopt McD's "Six Sigma-like" methods of quality control that make's its Big Mac taste exactly the same in Los Angeles as it does in Beijing. So what should I order from Maui Taco's lengthy fast food menu? Well...tacos. Here is my opinion: Fish Taco Breakdown: 1. Corn tortillas: Two medium small tortillas per taco. These were obviously mass produced/machine made. Most quality taco places, e.g. even the small ones in Albuquerque, would grill and brown these on a skillet to cook them a little more and impart a smoky browned flavor. At Maui Taco, they were just steamed to soften them so they have a very flat, corn meal/flour taste to them. 2. Fish: A white fish that was steamed. Most good taco places would grill them to again impart additional flavors from grilling or even browning from the Maillaird reaction. The fish tasted...well fishy and was flat tasting 3. Mayonaise/white sauce: Some type of runny mayo was added to the taco. This did nothing more than make the taco soggy and hide some of the fishy flavors. 4. Lettuce: Shredded lettuce. Instead of a more rougher shredding this gave it a Taco Bell look. Granted this is a nit. 5. Condiments: At the condiment table you can add cilantro, onions, jalapeno peppers and hot sauces. Most of the hot sauces tasted good but were very thin and runny. So adding them to an already soggy taco made it like a soup. 6. Price: $3.99 each. Mango BBQ Pork Taco 1. All of the above comments apply except for the fish of course 2. Mango BBQ Pork Taco: It was not obvious that this pork ever got close to a flame. It tasted like Kalua pork or just plain pulled pork that had BBQ sauce added to it. No smokly flavors, no visual or olfactory evidence of the characteristic burnt or carnitas like browning of pork. The BBQ sauce tasted like thicken fruit juice. Nothing spicy nor interesting characteristic in this sauce. Just sweet and bland. 3. Price: $3.99 OVERALL: Because of the apparent heritage of this company, I expected something much better. I doubt very highly that the original tacos created by the chef/owner even tasted close to the product that his company now serves. This was a great disappointment.

For a taco stand, this place gets a five star, killer review!! I came for the fish tacos I read about in an ad mag and good golly did they deliver! The ahi is marinated in a pineapple and lime juice combo and grilled, not breaded, just the way it should be. YUMMM! There are 6 salsas, including a pineapple jalapeno, to sample and I would suggest trying them all. For a drink, I mixed the hibiscus juice with iced tea, awesome! Maui Tacos is the only place we went to twice on our vacation, yeah, it's that good! Oh and by the way, you can buy their cook book that includes every single item on the menu on your way out...genius!!

Two words: fish tacos. Two more: salsa bar. We also enjoyed the nachos. The seating inside is limited and cramped, so I'd recommend taking the food to go to one of the many nearby beach parks.

Oh my lord, the salsa bar is insane. the food is AMAZING, who would've thought this was a small chain restaurant. I'll come back to maui specifically to eat these tacos. I'm going to go back to California and search for a taco salad as good as this.

I completely agree with Jeff C. about Maui Tacos. Being born and raised in San Diego, we're used to the best Mexican food around. But I have to say, Maui Tacos can compete. It has the flavor of San Diego Mexican mixed with Hawaiian ingredients. I usually get the Lahaina burrito with carne asada (I prefer burritos instead of tacos), and boy is it good. My boyfriend has had different burritos, tacos, and the taco salad and all have been great. I personally like the pineapple salsa, but my boyfriend likes the Maui Fire Dancer. He liked it so much that he bought the hot sauce bottles and brought it home. Basically, Maui Tacos reminds me of home while I'm on vacation.

I'm from California so I consider myself to be almost an expert when it comes to Mexican food. Mexican food in Hawaii? Are you crazy? Maui Tacos doesn't dissapoint - the burritos are really good and they're pretty big - I'm not a fan of the $7 price tag, but oh well... It definitely satisfied my Mexican food craving during our vacation.

Great if your expectations are appropriate. Not a fancy sit down Mexican place. Basically taqueria food with some creative burritos. Great to take out and eat on the beach. Got two burritos (a Lahina and a Sandy Beach for the vegetarian SO), both were delicious. Salsa bar was a pleasant surprise. Two people behind the counter were friendly and cranked out orders efficiently.

Maui Tacos sounds fun enough - "Mexican Food with Mauitude." I went for the special combo #3 with local fish in the taco and a chicken enchilada with typical spanish rice, refried beans, and nacho chips. Add a soda and the total is $8.83 for dinner. The fish in the taco was not freshly cooked - it'd been sitting around a bit, long enough to get rubbery. Yuck. The chicken seemed a bit dry - I would guess it'd been sitting around awhile too. Blah. THe beans and rice were good - so were the nacho chips and salsa bar selection. So - I would suggest just stopping in here for a small combo of rice & beans for $2.99. In all fairness, maybe I should've tried a burrito. The Lahaina looked pretty darn good.

Ok, so we figured since we're in Maui, they gotta have some great fish tacos. Nope, wrong assumption. The tacos are smothered with cabbage. The taste is bland, and the price of the tacos are a bit pricey. The only thing good here is the large salsa selection. But, not worth the visit.

I enjoy a good Mexican meal and especially one that is large enough to feed me for 2 meals. Maui Tacos is basic authentic Mexican cuisine in a fast food style take-out restaurant. There is outdoor seating available but I prefer to take my hot food to go because its too hot in Maui to eat in the sun. I love how they provide the option of a wet burrito.. tasty. The menu is a la carte so the meal does get expensive with chips and salsa, guacamole and a drink to accompany your entree. This place is reliable and always hits the spot.

  • Beth M.

Place was good, but I think it's best feature is that it's a cheap lunch in Maui. I've definitely had better Mexican food, but I'm from southern California so I won't judge Mexican food in middle of the Pacific Ocean. It's quick, cheap, and good. Basic food for a quick lunch on vacation. I was disappointed with the fish tacos - they were regular tacos with fish instead of chicken. I tend to think of fish tacos as their own type of taco and was expecting this (lime, some dressing, cabbage stuff), but no such luck.

We had a super delicious lunch here on our first full day in Maui. The fish tacos were great and my kids loved the cheese quesadillas and red rice. The salsas were awesome - very fresh and very tasty. The restaurant is not particularly comfortable or kid friendly (one kid's item on the menu - something my kids don't eat, and one high chair that isn't tall enough for the tables or counter), but we don't really walk into taco shops expecting more. On our second visit we had the wet burritos and they were delish. I love this place.

a lot of people say that the fish tacos are what shapes Maui Tacos. Yes, i'll admit, the fish tacos are amazing, but in Maui, you can do that withought trying. Fresh fish everywhere you go. Theres nothing special about a fish taco on maui, because at every restaurant, theres fish. What really shapes a Hawaiian restaurant is what they have to offer thats different. And maui taco's delivers. An expansive menu of delicious mexican foods includes burrito's, tacos, salads, soups, quesadillas and even desserts (which are not bad either). We went to Maui tacos after arriving on a flight from Hilo, and everyone in the car wanted to go there because of our past experience there. For some reason, I was dying to have something called a chimichanga, which is basically a fried burrito. I'd been wanting to taste one for a long time and was pleased to discover they had them there. Let me tell you it was a great decision. A huge mound of fried goodness, and the smell of melted cheese and chicken wafting through my nose. This was all very great, until I had to go to the bathroom. OK, so nowadays, you expect a bathroom at every restaurant, and maybe I was being a little stuck-up. But when the nearest bathroom is three blocks away, and is locked, what do you want me to do, ask nicely? We finally ended up walking even farther to find a small bathroom at one of the Kama'ole beaches. By that time, we had to take our food into the car to finish it. Let me just say though, that was the best car trip of my life.

I've eaten a lot of good Tex-Mex living in Dallas and Denver. This place makes the grade. It's in a convenient spot on Kihei Rd to stop and grab a late lunch after cooking on the beach all day (get it to go, not eat in... this location isn't anything fancy... the one on Piikea Ave at the Piilani Village Shopping Center is much nicer). I had pork tacos with some of their own salsa. Real wet, real tender, real good. Not to miss. My kids had nachos and a quesadilla, but failed to finish them off. My wife liked the salsas so much, we bought a copy of their cookbook. Mahalo, Maui Tacos!

  • Kenny W.

i'm from california too so i'm spoiled by the numerous choices we have. i ordered the combo w/ 2 fish tacos, rice and beans. the mahi was fresh and tasty but i dont know how the $3 tag for each taco is justified. it wasnt anything special. the salsa were all watery and eh. rice and beans were typical. i went here after watching their commercial on tv while in my hotel room. it looked really good on tv so i was rather disappointed when i finally ate the food. i couldnt help but think that i'd rather have rubio's when it comes to fish tacos. on a side note, the person handling the register also handled my food but that seem to be commonplace in maui.

Lousy, overpriced take-out Mexican food. If you *must* have Mexican food while you're on vacation, this *might* do it for you. It didn't for us. We weren't hungry anymore after we left, that's about all I can say.

We're big fans of Taquerias, and in Boston we have the best- Anna's. We compare everything to them. While Maui Tacos was good, they were expensive for a taco stand and Anna's was still far superior. They do have a good salsa bar though!

The 1st thing I always do after getting off the airplane is come to Maui Tacos. God, I love this place; I even bought their cookbook a few years back. Yes, it is on the side of fast food, but I don't buy the negative comments below about the quality. It's all been fresh, quality food served up to me. The staff could be a bit friendlier, but all in all, the food's great and there's no better salsa.

I think the string of whiney reviews here is unfair. I'm from SF where burrito joints have a sort of a cult following. I would stack this with some of the better ones. The salsa bar is clean and fresh. The help was super friendly on the 3 times we visited in the last 2 weeks. The street tacos could have used a little more trimming of fat, but that is hardly abnormal for a mexican restaurant, otherwise, everything we ordered was top notch. Fish tacos were great. Fish burritos were HUGE and very satisfying. I would definitely say the fish stuff is the strong suit here. At Maui prices nearby, we found ourselves coming here to save a few bucks often for reliably tasty and affordable meals. Thank you Maui Tacos!

This is probably better than Taco Bell, but overall, it was just ok. We went here because a friend had suggested Maui Taco. My first impression walking though the door was fast food. A little like a Taco Bell. Honestly, I was hoping for more. Maui has its share of little corner restaurants with low overhead, and I was imaging Maui taco to be more like that. Maybe it was the charm that was lacking? Anyway, the food. We had shrimp, pork, and fish tacos. Also chicken nachos. Shrimp tacos were the best. The rest were ok. Not sure what was missing here for me, but it just kept feeling like Taco Bell.

I decided to check out this restaurant after strolling the area and seeing "Best Tacos in Maui" on the front door. It did not disappoint. The Tacos were great. I had the Pork and Chicken tacos with Nachos. The sauces were great and the Maui take on Mexican taste was tasty and well worth trying. The prices were also reasonable. Trying the Kale and Pineapple drinkd was also unique. The drinks were refreshing and flavorful.

Maui Tacos is the standard for Tacos on Maui. This small taco joint has the best tacos, burritos and plate lunches around. It's an institution on Maui as recognized by the local celebrities and holiday makers. We vacation in Kihei and rely on Maui Tacos as our "go to" place for quick meals. The staff is friendly and the cook is talented. They offer many varieties of hot sauce and mixed salsa type sides at the condiment bar. Nice drinks and great chips. Easy access from the beaches.

Sorry, hugely disappointed in dinner tonight. My Hubbie was craving Mexican so I stopped by Maui Tacos for take out. I ordered me a taco salad and got home to pull out a flat, wilted taco bowl with all the fixing but no lettuce! Seriously, I had to dig to find lettuce and it was like a garnish at the bottom! So bizarre. I'm including a photo and this was before having a bite. I was shocked. Certainly does not look like a "salad". Won't be going back to the South Side Maui Tacos for awhile:(

After two fantastic meals at Taqueria Cruz and Roasted Chiles respectively, Maui Tacos brought the standard for Mexican food on Maui plummeting down. Things looked oh so promising--the place was packed to the brim when we first arrived, with the line snaking its way up to the door. But then...we ordered. One of the options on their menu is the "beach tacos" platter. Since there was no explanation of what a beach taco was anywhere else on the menu, my boyfriend asked the woman ringing us up at the counter. She looked at him like he was being incredibly stupid, and then answered him in an exasperated manner. After that show, I feel like the $1 tip I left was too much--there was no "good" associated with that service. While waiting for the food to be prepared, I stocked up on a couple of different kinds of salsa from the bar. The salsas were admittedly the highlight of my meal, as they were the most flavourful things around. My fish tacos contained soft meat, but there was just not enough flavour in them. Perhaps you're expected to provide the flavour yourself by adding some salsa, but that would be a first for me--every other taco joint I've been to has expected the salsa to enhance existing flavour rather than provide the base flavour itself. The Mexican rice that accompanied the tacos was admittedly pretty tasty, but the pinto beans were absolutely bland and yet another disappointment. Next time I'm in Maui, I will avoid this place like the plague. There are tons of better options for fish tacos on the island, with much better service to boot.

Oh Maui Tacos, my heart is still with you in Maui. While we are separated by 4,391 miles, you will always be with me. I have experienced you several times and you have never disappointed. I often fantasize that one day I will receive new that you have expanded all the way to Ohio. But alas, that seems to be nothing more than the hopes and dreams of a silly girl. I can't decide what my favorite menu item is. The fish tacos are fresh (duh) and amazing. The fried ice cream is a delicious classic, but there is nothing quite like the banana chingalinga! Oh sweet mother of God, it is AMAZING! Crispy, gooey, and sweet all at the same time. It's the dessert trifecta! Just a tip: The children's meal comes with tortilla chips that are covered in cinnamon and sugar. They are amazing. If you ask nicely, they will make you a grown up size and it will be heaven!

Definitively the worst meal I've eaten on Maui. Maui Tacos disappoints on every front possible. First, and most importantly, the food: This is the best part of the experience and it is only downhill from here. As others have mentioned, Maui Tacos provides their own varieties of salsa which while decent were nothing particularly special taste-wise. Unfortunately, other than the salsa, there isn't much to be said for this restaurant. The fish tacos which I had were passable, but nothing you can't get elsewhere. The service: The cashier that was working when we came in practically exuded a don't-talk-to-me attitude. Given that this place is more cafeteria than restaurant, I don't expect top-tier service, but taking my order without an eye-roll would be nice. To claim that the service was even "passable" would be undeserved praise. PS: This place has no bathroom on-site. If you need to use the facilities it is best to do so before you arrive. Otherwise, there are restrooms located at the shopping complex next door at the back of Cafe O'Lei (which is a much better place to eat anyhow).

Food: 4 stars Service: 3-no stars We had been eyeing maui tacos for a few days and finally stopped in. This will be a two part review- one on service and one on tacos. Tacos: shrimp taco was amazing!!! Huge portion! Next I would go with the fish tacos!!! All super delicious! Loved the salsa bar too! Service: Linda at the cash register greeted us with no greeting but just a sour look. We asked about the tacos and she replied with short rude remarks. We proceeded to order and asked for ice water which she replied, "you get it yourself." I then asked if I could use the bathroom to wash my hands. She said " nope we don't have one." I asked if there was any nearby and she said next building over upstairs- she forgot the part that it was locked with a code. When my husband was signing the check, he did not leave a tip as we ordered, picked up the food and cleared our table. She scoffed, " that's how we make our living." This is completely uncalled for- she was nothing but rude to us the entire ordering experience and then continued to give us the stink eye for the rest of the meal. A tip is for service and should not be expected. Would have come back for food; however, the negative experience with Linda was so memorable that we won't be back. Such a shame! On another note, the other staff seemed super friendly- a cook even smiled and waved at us.

Great fish tacos over here in a small shop in Kehei. Cinnamon chips are good too. This seems like a locals place to get tacos, and it is in a great location close to the beach

The food was okay, but the cashier seems unhappy working there. From the other reviews I've read, it seems to be normal for her to not have a friendly smile or good customer service. She's the thin, young girl working there on Sunday. She must be a family member or friend of the family which is probably why they haven't let her go, but no worries, this establishment can keep her. We'll just take our business elsewhere. Everyone wins.

Not good at all!! Chips were stale and the salsa???? Really, I mean REALLY?!?! Even El Paso has tomatoes in it. How this got the best of Maui I will never understand. Do not recommend. In response to Maui T. Please know the service was okay, could've been better if the woman didn't seem so annoyed. However, my review is primarily about the food. We were there on June 4th.

To preface this review, I am from Southern California where the standard for tacos is very high. With that said, I was underwhelmed with Maui Tacos. I ordered the vegetarian tacos which were 5.75 each. I feel that is expensive for rice, beans, potatoes, and guac. I picked out the potatoes from my tacos because they did not look good. The guacamole was not fresh. The salsa bar is good. This is a very small restaurant and seating was relatively limited. We came in 30 min before closing and it was very busy. The cashier was not friendly, though she had been dealing with a rude customer ahead of us. I would not recommend based on the quality of the food and the service.

I appreciate the quick response to my post. My order was "take out" & I did not feel inclined to drive back & complain. It was late & maybe staff were tired .. I was probably one of the last customers because the self serve salsa's were almost empty too?

Great food, great prices. Had the Pork Taco salad, husband got the beach tacos. Pork was braised shoulder, delicious and everything it should be. Food was fresh & tasty and beautifully presented. Also had the Pineapple-Kale Agua Fresca which was refreshing and not too sweet, husband had the horchata, good, though it is a Sweet drink. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner. Definitely want to try the Chicken-Mango taco salad next time. Well done!

Fish tacos. I'm not really sure what else is on the menu, or if that really matters, but if you are going here you need to order the fish tacos. Very, very good. They also have all sorts of salsa available, including pineapple salsa. I also liked how they had pineapple juice there as a beverage. This is a very solid casual lunch or quick dinner place while in Maui.

Tacos were fresh and tasty. Rice and beans lacked flavor and I think the rice was old. Loco moco was just okay. $11 for 2 fish tacos and rice and beans? ....is that normal? Would go back, but nothing really special.

Maui Tacos are pretty average. A step above the standard fast-food joints, but not a huge step. I found the fish tacos to be dry and overcooked, without any individuality or creativeness. My lime was dried out, and the rice & beans are not tasty at all. Inside it looks like a McDonalds. There are better fish tacos out there folks, go find them.

First tacos that I tried in maui. I ordered fish tacos. Not really that great quality of fish, very bland. The rice and beans were ok but nothing special. Wouldn't try this again. Even the locals we talked to after don't like this place. Try any other place.

If you are looking for a reasonable fast food taco and to go this is the place. Priced pretty reasonably.

Very expensive and no flavor. If you want Mexican food, you be better going to Taco Bell.

This was the first and the last fish taco I ate while visiting Maui last week. It was by far my favorite. To be candid, during my week long stay I ate fish tacos at no less than five different restaurants (Maui Tacos, Coconuts, Horhitos, Big Beach BBQ, and Up in Smoke BBQ). My problem with most fish tacos I had was that there wasn't enough heat in the salsas used to complement the fish. Maui Tacos used both quality fish that was well cooked, and had a tasty salsa bar with freshly made salsas of varying heat levels (I liked the tomatillo one and the pineapple one the most). The food was excellent, the price was reasonable, and it was convenient for taking out or eating in. Perfect.

Had the fish taco platter good amount of food and portions were good sized. The individual tacos are bigger and packed with tons of stuff. I'll be back!

No longer have mahi mahi. This location does not have much seating so come before lunch rush.

Love this place! Fish tacos are excellent! I'm lactose intolerant so I can rarely eat at places like this d/t the sauces, etc. Their jalapeño/cilantro sauce is mayo based but without dairy! And the pineapple paradise sauce is yummy! The rice is also dairy free!!

  • D. K.

A-OK fish and shrimp tacos. Nothing really blew my mind, but it was a cheap, filling lunch option. I didn't think the chicken/beef tacos were as good as the seafood.

We went to Maui Taco's when it was down across from the park. That location is now closed but it was amazing. Food was great and the service was awesome! We went to this location this week and it was terrible. The food was soggy, the fish was fishy, which it shouldn't smell if it was fresh. The salsa's were all watered down and the service was awful. The older woman at the counter working was very rude. When I ordered she asked what I wanted in my taco, I asked what the options were and she rolled her eyes and repeated the options. I ordered a pork taco and an enchilada with fish. She then asked what kind of beans and I asked what the options where and she laughed and rolled her eyes in exhaustion with me and repeated the options. After we ordered, she was just complaining and huffing and puffing. Someone spilled some water or juice and she was complaining that she had to clean it up. The food was very mediocre, and the atmosphere was the worst on the island. Definitely not Maui style.

    (1)
  • Punita K.

Delicious, fresh and fast. I ate here a few times ...strolling right off the beach and starving. I love Maui tacos because there are a lot of different options, the food is fresh and they have a sauce/salsa bar which is all surprisingly fresh and high quality food for a really reasonable price. I cant wait to go back to hawaii and eat lunch here. The fish taco's were the best!!!

  • Cyn W.

i'm surprised to see so many bad reviews here -- this was my husband's and my FAVORITE fish tacos on the island. we went back for one last lunch before getting on the plane home, but to the Kahului location, which is NOT as good. we're from LA, so we know not to really expect authentic "Mexican" food when we travel. we came here for the fish, and this place nails it... the fish tacos have tender, extremely flaky fish that is just awesome with the cabbage, and the sauce has just the right balance of zing. husband also thought the refried beans were very good, and he knows refried beans. (again, Kahului location's beans were sub-par.) all in all, we were big fans.

Thank you for your prompt response in trying to rectify our unpleasant experience at Maui Tacos. My husband and I, had called in Mon. Oct 20th at 6:25pm and by the 6th try at 6:40pm we were finally able to call in our order. I only this by checking my recents in my cell phone log. However, when we did pick up our order, we were greeted by amicable customer service so we appreciated that. Kristina

After reading great reviews on-line, we decided to try this place. We arrived mid-morning. We were the only customers. The wait staff was appathetic. There is no inside seating, so we asked if they would let us know when the food was ready. "You can check back in five minutes." Was the reply. Not a single other customer the entire time we were there, and they couldn't let us know?!? Seriously? When I went back to check (and wait) for the third time, the girl at the counter walked in after me (it looked like she had been shopping; she had a bag in her hand), picked up my food, and handed it to me. It was cold, and the taquitos tasted like old oil. The chips were mediocre, the fountain drink (which was supposed to be Coke) was awful, and the one decent food item (a burrito) was spoiled by the last third of it, which also tasted like bad oil. Horrible food and bad dervice. The day before, we webnt to Coconuts Fish Cafe, right down the street. That was INCREDIBLE food, amazing service, and a great atmosphere. Take your money there; you won't be sorry!

This is a great place to grab a quick and affordable lunch across the street from the beach. They have a handful of beers available too. I had the Kahlua Pork Bowl and it was super tasty. The salsa bar has some good options for those (like me) who like it spicy. Service was nice and very prompt. 2 big thumbs up.

Cheap affordable Mexican with Maui twist. We got chicken mango salad and fish tacos combo. The fish in taco was oily. The salad was different but could have been better.

This review is specifically for the banana chingalinga! The first time we visited this place- they ran out!! :( Second time, we came back we able to eat it alas! SO GOOD. banana cinnamon sugar all in a fried tortilla. mhmmm. my fav flavors altogether in a creative dessert. The honey is drizzled on top added that extra touch that made this chingalinga just blissful. The name is so fun to say too! Other than that, food was basic mexican food, nothing oober special! Nonetheless, my fam enjoyed :)

If you're looking for a quick and satisfying place to eat this is the place. The portions are big (kind of Rubio's/Baja Fresh style) and the food tasted fresh. I got the Paia (one of their three veggie burrito options). I really liked that they had so many veggie options. It was good. I'd recommend this place if you're looking for something quick, good, and reasonably priced.

Maui taco what happened!!! I wanted to leave a good review cause I loved you guys the first time I visited Maui. Man has the food quality gone down hill. I even went there twice to see if I just caught them on a bad day. Did they forget how to season their proteins. Tacos were very bland!! Salsa is ok. I have to agree with the other reviews, the chips are bad.

    (2)
  • Rashmi P.

We got the mango salad which was very tasty and very filling. They had an awesome salad bar. Everything tasted very fresh and was veggie friendly.

Huevos Rancheros had nothing to recommend them. "real juice" was not juice at all. Maybe the fish tacos are better but I'll pass this place by.

  • Heather J.

Soooooo good! The bbq pork taco was amazing!! And the service was great, super chatty and friendly! Love these kinds of places! I'll be back for sure! My husband also got the fish taco with beans, he loved it but in my opinion it didn't compare. Still tasty though! Oh and try the pineapple salsa, we had 4 helpings!! Several other types of salsa to try also!

  • Michael B.

We stopped in here hungry for anything after hanging in the sun and ocean for hours. Defiantly fast food quality, really generic and forgettable but at least edible without much regret. Go somewhere better unless you're starved.

    (2)
  • Johnny F.

Barely 3 stars. The burritos keep getting smaller and smaller. The ingredients are not high quality, of course, but it's not like beans and rice are expensive. Burning your own bridge. We remember maui tacos when they had twice the quantity at much less price.

    (3)
  • A Patricia P.

I tried the tacos al pastor and they were awesome! I'm from Mexico and the flavor is just like the ones at home. Really recommend them.

    (5)
  • Nicklaus M.

Food was filling and fast. The salsa bar was and added bonus, with 6 types of salsas offered and sautéed and sliced onions offered as well. Smaller eaters can find themselves full after one of the fully stuffed tacos, with two tacos filling myself after plenty of chips and salsa. My personal recommendation is to try all the different salsas, as many flavors like pineapple are unique, at least in my experience.

After visiting Maui several times over the years, Maui Taco has always been a go-to favorite. Just returned for another two week vacation and went last night... What a huge DISAPPOINTMENT!!! Aside from being too pricey for what we got - the service was terrible. The lady who took our order was awfully rude; we were the only ones in the place and placed an order to go. She acted very inconvenienced by our very presence (eye-rolls and all). I proceeded to fill some of the 2oz containers from their "world famous salsa bar" - which I love good sauces as an accompaniment - who doesn't? The rude lady behind the counter sneered and said to my husband multiple times "that's too much salsa!" Really?? It's meant to be complimentary with your meal. Thanks a lot, Maui Taco, we've spent a lot of good times and money over the years frequenting your establishment in Kihei - but will NEVER return again. It's amazing how bad customer service can change your opinion on a place.... Save your money.

Worst meal I've eaten in Maui. The fish taco looked nothing like their promo photos... One soggy fish taco and a grand total of 6 tortilla chips.

  • Mrs. A.

Really great Mexican food. We loved the taco salad, burrito and cheese enchiladas (with the red sauce). Restaurant is small and cozy, more if a quick eat type of place.

    (4)
  • Mike E.

Ok food. We probably wouldn't eat here again given the many options for Mexican food in Maui. I had the pork tacos, hubby had one fish and one beef taco. He liked the fish taco more than the beef. Pork was ok, but nothing great. Salsas were ok. Service was not so great. We paid $31 for 2 sodas and 2 #2 taco meals. I'm sure the lady overcharged us, but she seemed put out when my husband asked about it.

    (3)
  • Theresa C.

We got the Lahaina burrito with chicken "wet", it was really good! We weren't even that hungry and shared one, I wish I had been hungrier. The chicken was a little dry hence the 4 stars, we should've got the carne asada. Loved the salsa, it was pretty spicy so be careful. Solid!

My husband and I are on our honeymoon in Hawaii. This has been one of our FAV meals on our trip (we've also eaten at morimoto, so to give you an idea-we're really open to trying it all while here..). The fish tacos are what dreams are made of. The slaw is perfect, the portions are huge, and very reasonably priced (I think we spent under $20 for the two of us...). Thumbs up, and please open one in chicago!!!

  • Christina B.

Amazing- so close to real deal!! This place must have been straight from Texas/Cali! As a Texan who loves her Mexican food I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place was!!! Each meal (6bought) was so full of flavor and filling!!!! Our ladies even hooked us up with a couple bags of chips so we could try all the salsas from the salsa bar- back in our condo! (We got our order to go) only downfall- there was no a/c and no windows for a breeze which made a full all standing eating bistro area unbearably hot! However, the food made it worth it! Had we stopped here first we wouldn't have eaten anywhere else on island during our min vacation. (From Oahu- came over for a few days!) we will defiantly be back to this establishment during our next visit

This place serves up a good plate of food. The staff was very friendly. I ordered the fish tacos and they were really good. The only thing I thought was dumb was all the table were high up. Not good for kids in highchairs or if someone in a wheelchair wanted to eat here.

    (4)
  • Malia M.

I thought it was excellent. Pineapple salsa was awesome like others said. I had 2 beach tacos for 10.95$ that were pretty good. Refried beans & rice were nice too. Good lunch spot, although small!!

Their tacos are the best tacos around. They have a world famous salsa bar that has very good salsas. The kalua pork is delicious. Me and my family are so glad we went to Maui tacos.

Based on this particular spot iin Kihei (there are others around the islands), this was not a place we in which we would return. While the food was okay, the service - two young girls who seemed to want to be anywhere else but where they were - was not. Given there are numerous other spots where one can find fish tacos, I would recommend finding one of them rather than eating at this establishment. One other thing - while awaiting our food, we found it to be very warm inside the shop.

Great food hand made Chimichangas good Mexican fast food!!! Would recommend it!!!! Nachos, burritos salsa bar was all good more fast food style but well worth it!!

Step 1. Order 2 fish tacos to go Step 2. Add plenty of lime and salsa from their salsa bar Step 3. go next door and grab some beers Step 4. walk your butt across the street to the beach park and enjoy your meal

  • Danielle F.

Oh Maui Tacos.. What happened? You used to be so good but now you're just so... Bad! My tacos were chewy, cold, and way over cooked. I am so disappointed. At the same time this year, you made my favorite tacos. But now I just don't think I have the stomach to return unless I have something non fish related. I still like the salsa bar..

I went here for breakfast and I don't recommend you do the same. It may be cheap compared to a lot of other places but quality and taste was lacking. I had a skillet with bacon and cheese added and quite honestly, I could have made it better at home. I'm not someone who cooks so that has to say something right there.

    (1)
  • Jonathan S.

This place has fed us many a times! Great servings and the sauce bar will add from a savory to a spicy kick to whatever order. Easy and fast, but quality food! What else could you ask for when looking for mex food across the street from the beach?!

    (5)
  • Chae F.

Satisfying food but I felt like it lacked the type of bold flavors I expected. Maybe it was the freshness of the ingredients or the way it was seasoned or prepared, I'm not sure...but something was missing. I ordered the BBQ pork bowl without chips, over rice and beans with greens on top. I shared it with my partner and it was definitely enough for two. The service was fast and friendly but the food is just good, not great. The salsa bar, however, WAS great! There was a lot of variety there and everything tasted fresh. Loved that they had chopped cilantro and sliced jalepenos. Oh, and the horchata was deliciously sweet!

    (3)
  • Shana K.

I've had better tacos, but for a quick lunch while at the beach, this place hits the spot. It's a bit on the touristy side since many celebrities stop in. Maybe they run off their status instead of keeping up with their food quality? I've been many times over the last 8 years when I come to visit, and it's not as good as it once was. Maybe my tastes have changed.

MmMmm... *burp* Oh.. oops.. I was supposed to say that at the end of my review. Oh well.. their tacos were that good :] We came to this location twice.. and both times enjoyed their grilled fish tacos (the sauce that comes on these tacos are bomb!!! :P) w/ rice, beans, and fresh fried tortilla chips yelp.com/biz_photos/maui… $9.95 They have a little cute salsa bar yelp.com/biz_photos/maui… .. a couple tables.. and yummy fish tacos (oh, I said that already). *They are EVERYWHERE!! one in almost every mall in Maui.. no kidding. :P **I think these guys have better fish tacos than Coconut's.. (yup, I said it! DOH! =X) Service: no complaints here :} Parking: omg, this stupid tiny mall!! I hated looking for parking.. but.. don't make that stop you from eating here! :] MmMmm... *burp*

Best fish tacos I've had in my 28 years of living hands down. Fast easy lunch spot. Fast moving lines and service. Lots of options on the menu as well and all of them seem good. Would come back all the time of I lived here!

Delicious tacos, fish is so fresh and light! The bus boy and girl who helped us were so personable. Love that!

  • Wendy M.

Really good fish tacos! Great refried beans too. Being from California I have specific tastes for Mexican and I can be picky. These were really excellent - so much that we ate at 2 different locations on our trip. One suggestion to the owner- have a plain cheese nachos option. My son likes chips + cheese and nothing else which your staff accommodated but at the same price as the everything nachos which is way too much for chips and cheese. Just a thought.

  • Speed R.

We had the fish taco and a chicken taco. The chicken taco was pretty good and so was the fish taco. I like that its NOT made before you order it. So it's fresh and hot. A bit pricey, but this is Maui so I guess it's priced in line with the "Maui way" Free refills on soft drinks was a first here in Maui. The only down side is that the place needs a good cleaning. Lots of dirty build up at the counter where you eat. So we moved to a table and sat and ate there, even though we were in the way of the people waiting in line to order. All in all, we will probably return on our next visit.

  • Kato K.

That was about the worst fish tacos ever - a sloppy mess! We have had nothing but great food in Maui including amazing fish tacos at Coconuts. Our experience at Maui Taco was less that acceptable. 5 first time customers excitedly (after reading great reviews) went into this location. The sales/cashier was a bitter personality, the restaurant was dirty from previous customers and the condiment station was half-stocked. The fish taco had about 2 or 3 small pieces of fish and the black beans were not drained. The whole experience was crappy. 5 of us all had similar bad experiences, Suggestion: eat elsewhere!

    (1)
  • Holly N.

I'm really surprised by some of these really negative reviews. We've stopped by twice now for fish tacos. Yes, I guess there could be more fish in the fish tacos, and they're pricey, but what meals on Maui aren't pricey? Both times now, the service was great, staff friendly, and salsa bar amazing! We had drinks in the car from the beach, and they let us bring those in instead of buying theirs. I've gotten the #1 plate twice now -- 2 fish tacos, rice, beans and a handful of chips for under $11. My friend ate my rice -- otherwise it was too much food! The refried beans were wonderful, and the fish tacos-- well I may have to go again today!

    (4)
  • Benjamin J.

Not up to par. I've lived here for six years and this specific location was the ONLY Maui Tacos that I hadn't crossed off the list. They have poor food in general, but if you need filler it used to be a good deal. Then they screwed my simple order (burrito with beans, rice & cheese only) and replaced it with another, more expensive item. Keep in mind this happened not once, not twice, but the last FOUR times in a row. Fuck Maui Tacos! Go to Amigos or Piñata's instead!

    (1)
  • Len M.

While in Maui - I hit up Maui Taco's at this location. Please note, I'm from the SF Bay Area, we have a lot of freaking good taqueria joints out here. All in all - not too bad. The ingredients were fresh and tasted good. The servings were good sized. Their carnitas are just okay. The rice is bland, I did like the beans. This should be a 3.5 star review, but since there are no 1/2 stars and since they do have a pretty good salsa bar - it gets 4 stars. The prices are fair. I would go back.

  • Kristen C.

Best fish tacos! Just had the #1 grilled fish tacos plate with their rice and black beans side and good tortilla chips & salsa...$10.95 & totally worth it! Wish I had come here sooner compared to some of these places that charge $10+ for a quick meal that's mediocre. The fish was so well seasoned, moist and more than I could eat! Ample portions with left overs to take home. Cabbage on top was drizzled with a very tasty cilantro/jalapeño dressing. Excellent all around! Will remember for next time.

  • Tay C.

No Bueno!!! We went here for lunch because it was on the way to our hotel. My hubby had the baja grilled fish tacos and I had the maui fish tacos. I hate to say this but they tasted as cheap as they looked. My daughter had the chingalinga platter and after the first few bites, she couldn't force herself to eat anymore. I was so hoping to like this place because that was our first meal in Maui, but even the hole-in-the-wall joints I've been to have more flavor and quality than the food here. Needless to say, I won't be going back.

I really really really love their shredded beef burrito. I have em throw in extra veggies, guacamole, and beans. AND you most definitely have to make it "wet." (that didn't come out right) It's your typical shoebox sized Maui Taco joint with limited seating and their wonderful salsa bar at arms' length. At least half of the employees are pretty friendly. The other half act like they don't give a shiiiiiiatsu. But as long as I gotz my burrrrrito I'm goooood. So basically this rating is based on my unconditional love for the burrito and the several cool workers there.

  • Tommy C.

I really enjoyed my experience at Maui Tacos. I thought the food was awesome and the service was incredibly friendly. My favorite part of the meals was the salsa bar; they had a lot of interesting salsas to try. Considering it's a large tourist spot the prices were right. I'd come back if I were in Maui again.

OK, so this is just a little chain of taco shops around the islands--but it's some of the best Mexican food I've had in a long time--and this is from a gringo that lives in Southern California. Try their tacos--it's in the name. Maui Tacos. Or, have a burrito--they're big and super-filling. These aren't the cheapest tacos on the planet but they're well worth the price--and their salsa bar is pretty impressive--try the pineapple salsa. I think it had some cool sort of name, like Pineapple Shabang, or something--it's yellow. You might love it, you might hate it. But give it a whirl. They have about nine of these in HI... I happened upon the one in Kihei. It did not disappoint. A little salsa, a squeeze of lime, and these flavors just jump out of these babies. Mmm... good!

  • david c.

This has to be one of the worst burritos I have ever tasted. My husband and our friend ordered the Lahaina with shredded beef. I got fish tacos which were good. The problem was they were both given ground beef without telling them and the cook very rudely told them they didn't have shredded beef and no offer to get another. The wet sauce and ground beef tasted so bad, our men didn't finish. We are from southern california and have to say worst burrito! So sad.. Dont waste your money here!

MmmmmmmMmmmmm... Lip-smacking Good. I went with the Baja Grilled Fish Tacos Combo with black beans. I called in advance to-go. We got there in about 10-15 minutes and our order was waiting for us. I packed some pineapple salsa, jalapenos, medium hot salsa, and pickled vegetables from the salsa bar. The pineapple salsa was magnificent. From a few disappointments, I'm a big leery about getting popular over-greased recommendations from yelp... but the Baja Grilled Fish Tacos were great! No arteries clogged today :) P.S. Parking is over-crowded and difficult to find a spot. So the boyfriend graciously and patiently waited in the parking lot. It's much nicer to eat at the beach anyway.

"You guys really like this place, huh?" is what the cashier said to us on our 3rd-day-in-a-row visit - back in 2009. Yep... we stumbled here 6 years ago on our first trip while staying in Kihei. Every trip to Maui since then is filled with at least 3 visits to Maui Tacos. So you can imagine our excitement to head back on this trip. But they significantly raised their prices - it's now $4.95 for one grilled fish taco, which includes some chips... They do have a good salsa bar with 6 kinds of tasty salsa: mild tomato, medium pineapple, medium tomatillo, hot habanero, hot adobe chili, and hot Maui fire dancer (chipotle). The fish tacos are a decent size (two for me, three for my hubby), with a big heap of fresh grilled big chunks of fish with crispy lettuce and a delicious creme sauce. Just as tasty as remembered (5 stars for the tacos!)- just soured a little by the price inflation.

This place is in the shopping center next to the apartments where we are staying temporarily so we gave it a shot. I had a hard taco with shredded beef. The ingredients seemed pretty fresh and the meat was fairly tender, other than that it was pretty unremarkable. I am not really sure why the place is so popular.

The breakfast here is great, and CHEAP! Juevos Rancheros is great here, and like $6. If you're on a budget, this is the place for beakfast. TIP: if you save your receipt from the previous day, you get 50% off the next day - great if you're a tourist.

Yummy fish tacos, fast casual lunch spot, salsa bar. I was recommended here as a solid go-to taco joint, nothing fancy or blow-your-mind, and that's what it was! Big, filling tacos; try the pineapple salsa!

Getting right down to it: The Good - good food, great portions. When compared to other 'cheaper' alternative (i.e. Taco Bell), it really does seem as though Maui Taco provides a strong value. The Bad - service. Every time (and I've been there a couple dozen times) it seems as though you are interrupting them. And many items on the menu are NOT actually available - yet when you ask for it, you are made to feel as though you should have known. Will I go back? Probably. Not because it's that good of an experience, merely due to the lack of options on Maui.

Great salsa bar. Try the pineapple salsa. SO GOOD. However for two plates (no beverages!) we spent $32 - pricey for a fast food joint. And honestly not that good. I'm not sure how they won the awards they have plastered in the windows... There are much better places in the area that are similar quality and half the price.

  • Lilu M.

Food was blah. We tried 4 tacos...beef,chicken,bbq pulled pork, and something else I forgot. The tacos weren't spectacular. Yes they are huge but they aren't that good. Plus the place isn't very clean on the inside or the outside. We never said to go and when we were seated outside with a NUMBER on the TABLE they brought out all our food in bags to go. If your gonna ask us for here or to go and we say for here then don't make it to go.

We didn't visit any new places on this Maui trip, but apparently I've never written a review of Maui Taco. Thank you Yelp for so advising me. Always there with consistently delicious fish tacos. Biggest selection of salsas I've ever seen. Everything is freshly made, so the service can be slow. Eat in or carry out. Again, delicious fresh fish tacos!

  • Vladimir P.

I actually liked the food. The problem is the service. We ordered our food and waited and waited and waited. No order with our number was called. After a while we checked and our food was just sitting there getting cold. Is this a self service ? Very confusing.

  • L H.

Salsa bar- I liked the pineapple salsa. Could have been fresher. Taquitos- good portion and tasty. Chicken filling. Grilled fish taco- good but overpriced. Wet La Perouse burrito- really big portion. Taste-wise, it didn't really stand out.

  • Mpunkt H.

Love the grilled fish taco - such a honest, yummy, fresh and still light in your tummy taco I always want to come back for.

  • D. S.

Utterly disappointing. Beware of these inflated reviews. These people don't know what good tacos should look and taste like. This place is cafeteria quality at best. I wouldn't put it up against any "gringo" taco bar in the States. Go somewhere else, it's not worth the money.

    (1)
  • Anthony B.

The tacos got my girlfriend and I sick. Only outdoor seating which makes it bad for windy days. Not worth it at all. Not good for fish tacos or vegetarian burritos. not recommended for tourist or locals.

Everyone at this location is on Quaaludes. I am not sure where the fallout was, but there are new IPADS on the table to view the menu, order, and pay. Nothing came out correctly. The pads had numbers on them, the guy would walk out and scream "uh, fish tacos". We sent almost everything back. We ordered fish and got chicken, fish and got beef, quesadilla and got a taco. You get the idea...Saving grace, food was good and after 4-5 switchouts, our order was correct. Pricey, but good. Good salsa bar.. DEF was no Rubios! I will stick with the trucks instead!

  • Liz R.

Fish enchiladas are tasty. Service was okay and they let you have free toppings/ salsa. It is a hole in the wall but nice to see locals stopping by. May go back tomorrow! Update : I went again the next day.:)

I had shredded beef hard shell tacos and my girlfriend had their Beach Taco with shredded beef and their fish taco. I really liked the hard shell beef tacos and she really enjoyed her Beach and fish tacos. I'm also surprised by the negative reviews. We'd definitely come back. The service was fast and friendly, the prices were inexpensive, and it was clean.

  • Ron H.

A bit pricy but the food is excellent. We ordered the fish tacos, the fish taco salad, the chicken taco salad bowl and the burrito salad bowl. They were all excellent and came with a multitude of different salsas.

  • Leticia G.

Was a little pricey for a burrito but everything on this island is pricey. My husband and i had a burrito, it was okay. I fell in love with their salsa, the green one is amazing!! Their fish tacos looked really good, I'm sure they are better then the burritos.

    (3)
  • Michael W.

The fish tacos were just as good as I remembered them when I first had them 5 years ago. Also the salsa bar is top notch with some great island style salsas

It's tacos. It's a chain. They have one in Newark Airport. That's points off right there. I mean, ew, Jersey.

  • Alex K.

Really disappointing because I remember this place being really really good when I came here last. I ordered two mahi mahi fish tacos -- they were over seasoned Flautas were decent but on my last flauta (I saved for last because it was the largest) contained NO CHICKEN. Super disappointing. To be fair, the Nachos were the best thing we ordered. And the salsa bar is on point, the habenero salsa was DELICIOUS. All in all I will come here again next time in Maui in hopes for a better second experience.

    (2)
  • Veronica G.

Wish I would have ignored the hunger calling for five more mins so I could have tried somewhere else. portions were a great size for the price, fish tacos not bad. Nachos a waste of money. Probably won't go back...

I am not impresssed, I live in Kihei and work on S. kihei Rd and have driven past this place everyday twice a day for the last 3 years. I finally decided to try it out today. I was running late getting back to work from running errands and stopped here to grab something to take back with me. I ordered the Chicken Quesadilla, I was a little surprised that the total was nearly 11.00$ and did not include chips/rice/beans or a drink. The staff was friendly even though it was absolutely sweltering hot in there with no fans or air circulation. The food came out promptly which I appreciated considering my tight time frame. I took my bag and drove 3min to my work. When I opened the container I was less than impressed to see that it was dripping with grease, the tortillas were all soggy from the grease, there was no sour cream and maybe 1/2 teaspoon of "guacamole" that truly tasted like cleaning products (bleach). There were 4 triangles of food (for the price thought there should be more) and of the 4 triangles only 2 of them had meat which was disappointing. this was my first (and Last) experience with this restaurant, I work hospitality and will not be recommending this place. I would much rather eat at Amigos or even Freds.

    (1)
  • Keith E.

Wow, really disappointed. The fish tacos should be called cabbage tacos... I think there was fish in there. The sides were similar to a school cafeteria taste. I should have read the reviews first, dam! It's too bad, they are easy to make right.

    (2)
  • Alison M.

The food was good and reasonably priced, but the pineapple salsa is to die for!!

    (5)
  • Rickye J.

Was right on the money: portion, price and place. Both portion and price are fair. But it really doesn't matter if the taste isn't there which in this case it is. You can really taste the seasoning while feeling somewhat healthy. The cool factor was that this isn't your typical tourist spot which meant that we weren't bothered by the usual. It's great to have a place like: a restaurant with fair prices; great food; location away from tourists' scope.

  • Dairo R.

Our first food stop in Maui on our vacation. Fish tacos is bursting with flavor! Fresh and served in big portions enough to fuel you the whole day or send you to food coma. They did not have the beef plate I ordered to I opted for chicken at that time. Still a great place to go to, will come back.

    (4)
  • Heather H.

Ah Maui Tacos! You may be compared to chains like Taco Time by some, but to me you've filled my tummy with healthy grilled fish tacos like none else. Its a refresh since the Pacific Northwest lacks this. The salsa bar is pretty awesome with all its toppings and the tacos are actually pretty cheap fare compared to the rest of island's offerings. Grilled. Fast. Healthy.

  • Marika K.

Causal place.. Food was good and service was ok. I wanted the steak plate but they said they were out which I thought was weird and I was annoyed but I got the chicken and I was glad that it came out really good. One of the better places we went to.

    (4)
  • Jasmin K.

I don't know if this was the Maui Tacos joint I went to. It seems to be a chain. It was walking distance from Maui Coast Hotel. It is cheap, and THE BEST TACOS in the world. Cancun and Riviera Maya is the real Mexican food, but imagine Mexican and Hawaiian fusion in one plate? They say it is world famous. You can only find it in Hawaii I think. So I will always have fond memories. I was here in March 2013. Next year I would like to return to Maui or check out Waikiki, where the hardcore Hawaiians and Japanese people stay or live at.

  • Emmie N.

My impression of this place: reminds me of taco bell but cost twice as much. The only thing that saves this review from a 1 star is their Salsa bar. Lots of different Salsa to choose from to eat with a few pieces of chips they give you with your meal.

    (2)
  • Frank D.

Wack. Maybe they should outlaw "Mexican" food in Maui. Just because it comes in a corn tortilla, doesn't make it Mexican food.

    (1)
  • Steve R.

Good, but pricey. Had the chicken tacos, several times. Better than Taco Bell for sure. But not worth the $5/per.

    (3)
  • Margaret L.

I was not impressed with this place. I got a chicken burrito. The chicken did not have much flavor, the texture was really stringy, and it just was of poor quality. The rice also did not have much flavor, and while I had the burrito smothered, as with the rest of the burrito items, it also did not have much flavor. The "restaurant" itself was a fast food strip mall feeling with very little seating. There are some other really great, cute little places near by, so do yourself a favor and go to them over Maui Taco.

  • Stephen H.

I've been to Maui and Maui Tacos dozens of times over the years on annual visits of 3-6 weeks. Adding additional outlets seems to have resulted in a reduction in the quality of their product. Little less friendly staff, too much produce in their fish tacos, seems they are more focused on increasing their profit margin and less concerned with their product...

    (2)
  • Mathias H.

Maui Tacos is a pretty good Mexican style fast food place in Kihei. There is some Hawaiian influences but the food is still Mexican. The place itself is simple (that is being nice) with perhaps 10-15 seats. Not the type of place that one spends more time than necessary at but the food is good enough if one wants some tacos or such. The prices are decent to be Maui as well

    (3)
  • Chris O.

I'd give the food four stars but I was disappointed at how the salsa table was not fully stocked at 4:00 in the afternoon. Wifey got fish tacos on managers suggestion and they were awesome. I got the shredded beef burrito. Get it "wet" as it makes it much better. So, why the three stars? Again salsa bar was not stocked and prices are actually high considering its a self serve joint. Give it a shot...

  • Clay B.

this place is great, even had good service when the place was packed. all of the food is delicious...I've been there 4 times on my 9 day trip here

    (5)
  • Joel S.

Fish tacos were good. Nothing amazing in my opinion. Somewhat bland, but not overly fishy tasting. There were 3 vegetarian burrito options for my sister in-law, which was cool. The salsa bar is in fact very cool and helped make up for the aforementioned blandness of the fish tacos. The re-fried beans and mexican rice were almost cold on my plate and were very disgusting. Would have given them 4 stars if not for the gross beans and rice. What kind of Mexican joint has terrible beans and rice? It should be SO easy to do right...

    (3)
  • Jesse T.

These guys have really dropped the ball over the last few years. Their fish tacos are literally all cabbage and little fish. The best fish tacos are down the road at the place named after a giant nut that hangs from palm trees.

    (2)
  • Lucas L.

Great tacos and very nice portions. I ordered one taco and it filled me up just right. The service was a little shoddy because the employees felt like it was more important to talk to each other rather than the customers. Our orders came out pretty fast and the salsa bar is pretty damn good. This is a good place if you are in a rush or just want something fast. Other places that are just as good if not better are the L&L BBQ and Da Kitchen Express.

  • Becky K.

This place is awesome!! The only thing I didn't like was that they don't give you many chips. And I love chips. But seriously, I think my boyfriend got 7 chips with his fish taco. The guac was good and all of their salsas were pretty bangin'. Definitely go! We plan to go again before we leave.

    (4)
  • Katherine S.

Awesome burritos! Friendly service Their salsa bar always seems fresh and stocked unlike the one at Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center. My favorite, the laperouse burrito (chicken and shredded beef) YUM!

  • Jason G.

I came around noon. Bad idea. But any ways. I ordered the #3 combo plate which comes with 2 enchiladas covered in enchilada sauce and shredded cheese, W/ mexican rice, refried beans and nacho chips on the side. I ordered on enchilada beef and one pork. My recomendation? stick with the shredded pork. The beef was too dry and lacked flavor. But other then that. The rest of the meal was great! It really makes a difference when your mexican food is actually cooked by a mexican chef =p

  • Casey D.

Long story short I had high hopes for this place before visiting but was let down. Service was under par..rude employees. Food was disappointing in flavor but afterall it is a chain. And it's always dirty which is odd considering it's a small joint with usually 3-4 people working at a given time. I lived in Kihei for a year and a half do I tried many locations, tried to like this place, but there is better places to spend the your $$. 2 stars for your horchata

    (2)
  • Brad M.

American style Mexican food that is fresh and decently priced. I don't think there is a reason to give it less than 5 stars. I am from Southern California and get all kinds of Mexican food and Maui Tacos is just as good, if not better than local joints here. If you're looking for some good burritos/tacos or if you want to try a Fish taco for the first time, this is a pretty safe bet.

    (5)
  • Ben Y.

This place is hot garbage. Overpriced fake mexican food that taste worst than a T.V. dinner. They even have the nerve to have a cook book. What a joke. Go to Taco Bell instead.

    (1)
  • L D.

Meh..... sub par mexican food and can the staff crack a smile every once a while?!

    (2)
  • Heidi J.

The mahi-mahi fish tacos are outstanding but a bit pricey. Put a little pineapple passion salsa from their homemade salsa bar on it and they're perfect. I've survived on San Francisco burritos and tacos for ages and Maui Tacos is like the island version of The Little Chihuahua in Lower Haight- Healthy, quality food for a few bucks more than your typical Mission District menu. This place is a must-visit! Their space is small so large groups are better off to get everything to go and walk across the street to Kam 1.

  • Toni D.

November 30 @9am The food was okay but the service was terrible. passive aggressive cashier with attitude, although the cook was nice. Won't be going back.

  • Sara A.

We had the Grilled Fish Tacos and Paia Bean Burrito. It was just bland overall. I've definitely had better Mexican food and fish tacos. The salsa and sauces could have been better and could have used some sour cream and cheese, too. Prices were cheap, but then again it is sort of like a fast food joint.

  • Serena W.

This place has photos of famous faces framed on the wall... so if Adrien Brody smiles and says it's good, I suppose it's worth a try. I got the fish tacos...made with ahi tuna. AHI TUNA. but I'd skip the combo with the beans and rice next time.

    (5)

We got the mango salad which was very tasty and very filling. They had an awesome salad bar. Everything tasted very fresh and was veggie friendly.

Huevos Rancheros had nothing to recommend them. "real juice" was not juice at all. Maybe the fish tacos are better but I'll pass this place by.

    (3)

  • Alx V.

First tacos that I tried in maui. I ordered fish tacos. Not really that great quality of fish, very bland. The rice and beans were ok but nothing special. Wouldn't try this again. Even the locals we talked to after don't like this place. Try any other place.

  • Daryl A.

  • Julia H.

God I wish I went to Yelp and saw that even I reviews this place because I did not remember it. Lol. Still not great. Why did I eat here again. They also gave me about 4 chips and I had to go ask for more.

Loved this place! got great food and for Maui, it was reasonable price! I ordered fish taco and it was perfectly cooked. I will definite go back when I come to Maui. Friendly staff and the food was great! pineapple salsa was very good. try it next time you are there!

  • David B.

I appreciate the quick response to my post. My order was "take out" & I did not feel inclined to drive back & complain. It was late & maybe staff were tired .. I was probably one of the last customers because the self serve salsa's were almost empty too?

  • Lindsey S.

Well done!

  • Nick R.

    (4)
  • Douglas K.

Tacos were fresh and tasty. Rice and beans lacked flavor and I think the rice was old. Loco moco was just okay. $11 for 2 fish tacos and rice and beans? ....is that normal? Would go back, but nothing really special.

    (3)
  • Matt C.

  • Rick R.

  • Bryan C.

  • Darrell K.

I didn't like the fish tacos the rice and beans were good. I loved the desserts. Customer service ok. Revised: I did have the Banana chingalinga is was BOmb!!! 10 stars if yelp had 10 stars.

I tried the tacos al pastor and they were awesome! I'm from Mexico and the flavor is just like the ones at home. Really recommend them.

Really great Mexican food. We loved the taco salad, burrito and cheese enchiladas (with the red sauce). Restaurant is small and cozy, more if a quick eat type of place.

  • Mike E.

Great chick adobo really enjoyed the food. Fast convenient and not too costly. Defiantly a go to for a quick bite

  • Marla Z.

Their tacos are the best tacos around. They have a world famous salsa bar that has very good salsas. The kalua pork is delicious. Me and my family are so glad we went to Maui tacos.

  • Patricia V.

MmMmm... *burp* Oh..

  • Courtney F.

The breakfast here is great, and CHEAP! Juevos Rancheros is great here, and like $6. If you're on a budget, this is the place for beakfast. TIP: if you save your receipt from the previous day, you get 50% off the next day - great if you're a tourist.

  • Sunni A.

Yummy fish tacos, fast casual lunch spot, salsa bar. I was recommended here as a solid go-to taco joint, nothing fancy or blow-your-mind, and that's what it was! Big, filling tacos; try the pineapple salsa!

  • Alex C.

    (3)
  • Ashley L.

    (4)
  • Vladimir P.

I actually liked the food. The problem is the service. We ordered our food and waited and waited and waited. No order with our number was called. After a while we checked and our food was just sitting there getting cold. Is this a self service ? Very confusing.

  • L H.

Salsa bar- I liked the pineapple salsa. Could have been fresher. Taquitos- good portion and tasty. Chicken filling. Grilled fish taco- good but overpriced. Wet La Perouse burrito- really big portion. Taste-wise, it didn't really stand out.

  • Crystal B.

A bit pricy but the food is excellent. We ordered the fish tacos, the fish taco salad, the chicken taco salad bowl and the burrito salad bowl. They were all excellent and came with a multitude of different salsas.

Grilled. Fast. Healthy.

    (4)

Wack. Maybe they should outlaw "Mexican" food in Maui. Just because it comes in a corn tortilla, doesn't make it Mexican food.

Good, but pricey. Had the chicken tacos, several times. Better than Taco Bell for sure. But not worth the $5/per.

These guys have really dropped the ball over the last few years. Their fish tacos are literally all cabbage and little fish. The best fish tacos are down the road at the place named after a giant nut that hangs from palm trees.

This place is what it is. Fast food fusion of Mexican and Hawaiian. It's a good place for a cheap meal or late night stop. Nothing fancy, but good for the price.

  • J P.

Step 1. Order 2 fish tacos to go Step 2. Add plenty of lime and salsa from their salsa bar Step 3. go next door and grab some beers Step 4. walk your butt across the street to the beach park and enjoy your meal

This place has photos of famous faces framed on the wall... so if Adrien Brody smiles and says it's good, I suppose it's worth a try. I got the fish tacos...made with ahi tuna. AHI TUNA. but I'd skip the combo with the beans and rice next time.

This place is hot garbage. Overpriced fake mexican food that taste worst than a T.V. dinner. They even have the nerve to have a cook book. What a joke. Go to Taco Bell instead.

  • Becky K.

This place is awesome!! The only thing I didn't like was that they don't give you many chips. And I love chips. But seriously, I think my boyfriend got 7 chips with his fish taco. The guac was good and all of their salsas were pretty bangin'. Definitely go! We plan to go again before we leave.

    (2)

Cheap eats and not bad at all. You can't ask for anything more when it comes to a decent meal at a decent price. Two fish taco combo with re fried beans only $9.95! It hit the spot and also has a fun salsa bar.

  • Janell D.

Yum, yum, yum! At $4 a taco I have no complaints! The "catch of the day" tacos are very tasty and the salsa bar is perfect! Don't plan on eating your tacos in though, it really is a tiny place- come on, you are in Maui, go sit outside!

I've been going to maui taco for the past 4 years and really like it. I only get the fish burrito (hookipa)..and have never been disappointed. I like the salsa bar and it's never out of any toppings. It's dependable: I know what to expect and it never disappoints.

Surprised that the fish tacos weren't better. They must make them differently in California. Same chain, just better quality fish. Wasn't terrible, just wasn't great.

Don't listen to the haters! For a quick lunch bite, this place was great! The food was quite affordable given the high Maui prices and the flavor was spot on. We came from Texas and are pretty critical about Mexican, but for a quick taco or burrito, you can't go wrong with Maui Tacos

You wont get hammered like the resorts and the food is fresh and yummy.

Great fish tacos in a simple fast-food setting where you stand in line to place your order like you would at Taco Bell, etc.

Decent food, but nothing too spectacular. Their salsa bar is definitely the best part about this place. If you want some better Mexican at slightly more reasonable prices go to Taqueria Cruz, right next door in the Dolphin Plaza.

Mahalo, Maui Tacos!

i'm from california too so i'm spoiled by the numerous choices we have. i ordered the combo w/ 2 fish tacos, rice and beans. the mahi was fresh and tasty but i dont know how the $3 tag for each taco is justified. it wasnt anything special. the salsa were all watery and eh. rice and beans were typical. i went here after watching their commercial on tv while in my hotel room. it looked really good on tv so i was rather disappointed when i finally ate the food. i couldnt help but think that i'd rather have rubio's when it comes to fish tacos. on a side note, the person handling the register also handled my food but that seem to be commonplace in maui.

Lousy, overpriced take-out Mexican food. If you *must* have Mexican food while you're on vacation, this *might* do it for you. It didn't for us. We weren't hungry anymore after we left, that's about all I can say.

i'm surprised to see so many bad reviews here -- this was my husband's and my FAVORITE fish tacos on the island. we went back for one last lunch before getting on the plane home, but to the Kahului location, which is NOT as good. we're from LA, so we know not to really expect authentic "Mexican" food when we travel. we came here for the fish, and this place nails it... the fish tacos have tender, extremely flaky fish that is just awesome with the cabbage, and the sauce has just the right balance of zing. husband also thought the refried beans were very good, and he knows refried beans.

Food is good not great. You get what you pay for. This is a relatively fast food taco place but higher quality. Nothing special nothing bad.

We're big fans of Taquerias, and in Boston we have the best- Anna's. We compare everything to them. While Maui Tacos was good, they were expensive for a taco stand and Anna's was still far superior. They do have a good salsa bar though!

I agree that the prices are a little much, but it's Hawaii, everything's overpriced. The fish burrito is awesome, and their salsas are great! Multiple locations around the island too.

Oh my quest for the Island's best tacos, I had to give the small chain a try. The fish tacos were pretty good (not amazing), but I prefer Jawz's version better.

Great mexican, not greasy or loaded with cheese. Fish tacos and barbecue pork are favorites.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
