If you want a quick and cheap sushi meal - this place is great option.You get exactly what you pay for - nothing fancy, the rolls and portions are small but again cheap. Some things on the sushi train looked old so order from the menu. The food comes quick enough. I recommend the spicy tuna and udon soup (surprising full of flavor!)

The service here straight up sucks. We ordered take out and waited over 30 mins for some handrolls. One of our other friends went and sat down, ate off the belt, paid his bill and rejoined us and we still didn't have our sushi. The worst part was that after waiting 30 mins, we still didn't have our entire order and just asked for a refund of what they didn't give us and left.

Did I come here for the great sushi at Genki Sushi? ehh, sort of, but its more for the experience that you won't get at the mainland. The only other city I have seen this sort of cheap sushi on a conveyor belt was in London, and I can't remember the name of it. Something like this would not fly in the mainland, a food inspector would frown upon food being towed on a conveyor belt with no splach guard, too many food rules are broken at Genki Sushi, but the Hawaiians are so cool they have their own rules for everything! Ever seen a pig roasted in the sand? Just check out Sandy Beach, my review for that will be coming out soon, so stay tuned. . . Anyways, back to Genki, service was sub-par, but I was so hungry I didn't care, my eyes were on the dishes moving on the belt. Round and round we go with spicy tuna roll, california roll, and even cupcakes! If you want something you don't see, just flagged down a server and it'll take less than 5 mins for them to cook it up. The garlic chicken, a little crispy, but the sweet and spicy sauce more than makes up for it. For a fast food sushi joint, I thought it was pretty good, then again, we don't get fresh sushi on a daily basis like the islands, so my sushi taste buds could be non-discriminative especially when I'm hungry and have an empty stomach.

People who rate this place with one or two stars need to get real. This is a great place to grab a quick fresh meal on the way to the airport. Sure it isn't Sansei, but it is consistent, good, and quick. I loved the place in Honolulu and I am glad to see them in Maui. Now we just need a Curry House.

Look, the sushi isn't great. But is that really why you came? No, you came because it's sushi on a conveyor belt, and that is awesome. Sushi whizzing by you on colored plates. You grab everything that looks good, and for 4 people, this will come out to about $50-$70. Not bad. It's fun, it's quirky, it's decent sushi.

Quick seating at conveyor belt sushi. Servers were adequate and got special order items quickly. Fun to pick and choose the various offerings passing by on the belt. Plate edge color determined the price at the end. It was easy to pick the fresher items and leave the less "fresh" unless your eyes are bigger than your tummy, which often happens. Go for the total experience.

We found this place while rushing to find something to eat prior to Warren and Annabelle's magic show. We were trying to find a place that we would be able to finish dinner in less than an hour, which for friday night seemed impossible (we were reconciled to the idea of taco bell). We found genki sushi in a little plaza, and it was perfect for what we were looking for. It is fast and convenient. We were able to sit ourselves when we walked in. It is a conveyer-belt style japanese restaurant, which means that drinks, food, and dessert are all on the belt circling. You can request anything from the menu that you do not see on the belt. We really liked the teriyaki chicken bowel. My fiance had a special roll, the "triple roll" i believe, which was delicious. Price was just right. For two people, around $30 with drinks and tip (we ate lightly with 5-6 dishes, may be more expensive if more dishes are ordered).

It you enjoy sushi please avoid this place at all cost! We had stopped here just for a snack before going to the airport, but I wish that we would have just gone somewhere else. Nothing here was fresh but it certainly was cheap. I'm just surprised that I didn't get sick on the plane. Although Genki Sushi is a chain all around the world even in Asia, conveyor belt sushi just does not work and can't possibly be fresh when no one is eating anything off that belt. If possible I would have given this place zero stars.

the spicy tuna is good. get the one that is rolled up and you have to take the plastic out and put the seaweed wrap yourself. First i was confused on what to do but once i noticed there was instruction inside. It was simple. duh This place was very cheap got the Ahi Tuna Sashmi for only 4.95 and had 4 pieces. It tasted really fresh but I guess anywhere in Maui seafood would be fresh. Customer service was excellent. Every 3 minutes someone is checking up on us to see if we need anything.

Beware of this location. If you have a child in a high chair and your party is sitting in the booth, please please please make sure the wait staff does not serve hot tea on a serving tray. I wouldn't want any other child to be burned by hot tea being spilled on them. Sad to say, the manager told us that this had happened before.

Experience overall 2/10 Horrible experience in genkis, I told myself I wouldn't come here again after seeing a roach on the belt a few months back but after seeing ANOTHER roach on the belt AND bugs in our food, I'm positive that I won't be returning! Food 3/10 Bugs in udon, salmon still a little frozen, and roaches on belt. I definitely recommend everyone check their food before they eat it. On a good note, miso soup was alright, always kept our water full and bowls were tasty as well!

The two stars is based primarily on the poor customer service I received at this location. We went in one hour prior to closing and waited 10 minutes to be seated in a room that was occupied by 3 families. Not a great start for a hungry crowd. We were seated and it took another 5 minutes for us to receive any type of beverage or to get our orders taken. There were 3 employees standing at a counter across from where we were seated refilling the stock while talking to one another. Finally, one of them turned around and asked if we wanted to order anything with an unhappy tone. We ordered, waited for our food to come and never heard from them until we were ready to leave. We got up and walked over to the cashier and we just stared at each other until I mentioned that I was ready to pay. He asked for our stub and I told him we didn't receive one. "Well, how am I supposed to cash you out if you don't have it?" OMG! I put my sassy face on and asked for the manager. All in all the manager was empathetic and apologized but I left with a really bitter taste in my mouth.

Ok, I am IN LOVE with Genki Sushi on Oahu. This past July I visited Maui though and decided I had to get some at this location even though I'd seen a lot of bad reviews on it. I had to have my spicy tuna and my seaweed salad sushi! Anyway, I don't Yelp that much, but I had such a great experience that I had to do a review for them since they get such low reviews. I had called ahead to see if I could make it there on time, as they were closing shortly and I was driving 20 miles to get it. Once nearby we got lost and I called them again and told them we were in Kahului but lost and PLEASE don't close. They were super nice and kept the door open 10 minutes past closing so I could pick up my sushi. Everyone was very very nice and the sushi tasted great! So I would say don't necessarily believe these reviews, but check this place out for yourself. If you think the sushi on the belt looks old, you are free to order fresh made sushi from the waiter or waitress. Mine was fresh and delicious. The spicy tuna at Genki Sushi is worth trying at all costs!!!

This is the only type of sushi place with the rotating conveyer belt so genki has to do while I'm one Maui. It's always packed usually so I'd suggest getting he first available unless you're with a group and want to sit with each other. There are things for everyone, even people who doesn't like sushi. Go check it out.

They aren't being very friendly anymore. I noticed a new wave of customer during this past year and it's been getting worse. I feel like the customer has to start a convo. Oh! And DONT GO NEAR CLOSING TIMES!!! They will forget about you, forget etiquettes, and worst of all: give you THE WORST ATTITUDE. Im getting sick and tired of this place and their service.

After a horrific display yesterday at the Lahaina location we decided to try the one in Kahului. All I have to say is amazing. From the wait staff to the wait times to the quality of food and service. Today we got here at 11:25 and at now 11:45 we have enjoyed our entire meal and refills and a few laughs with the staff. This was a much better experience at a beloved restaurant.

Love Genki sushi. Located in the Maui Mall in kahului. I'm a pretty simple person to please so it doesn't take much to make me happy. So this place is fast when they take your order. Sometimes it might take a while for you to get a booth or to get seated at the counter. I like to order from the waitress or waiter rather then from the belt. I also lice this place because they sell coca cola products :o) i just wish they serve alcohol lol. But hey that's okay.. Try the Maunaloa Roll its so ono.

This place should be called "McDushi" since I agree with a previous review that this is basically McDonald's quality sushi. As much as I avoid McD's I would actually choose McD's over this place!! There is no cover over the food passing by so anyone can touch it and it's just continuously passing by catching the germs and airborne bacteria. There were items that passed by that had no label and even if they did I wouldn't have touched it since it looked awful and were smothered in mayo. There were also spam and hotdog sushi!!! What??!!! How much cheaper can you get than that??!! Those plates passed by continuously untouched and I was there for more than 45 mins! I did try some type of tuna roll that had tooooo many onions but otherwise was okay and a tempura Cali roll that was okay as well but cold and I could have done without it. I ordered a fresh cold drink but after 10-15 mins it hadn't arrived and after being there for 45 mins and seeing the same exact rolls pass by untouched and looking dry and extremely undesirable I couldn't take it any longer. The best part of this visit was when I walked out of the door and left. I've been to conveyor belt sushi restaurants before (not in Hawaii) and the food has been magnificent, higher quality, and actually cheaper! The sushi was also covered which made it at least more sanitary as it passed through the restaurant. I'm pretty certain I've never eaten at a worse place than this and I'm sad to say that and even have to write this review but I feel obligated to share this and the business should change or close. The wait staff were decent and I cannot complain about them.

Food is a 4; service is a 1. Sucks that good food is paired with one of the worst service experiences you can get on Maui. On a good note, the sushi is pretty good. My faves are: spicy tempura roll, seared spicy salmon, chicken karaage w: extra lemon, ika karaage and spicy tempura roll. The food is amazing, but don't expect servers to assist you with your request without waiting for 5 minutes to get even their attention.

I like to pronounce it Janky Sushi. Haha... But really, it's not half bad. It's better than the Lahaina location, that's for sure. I've grown to have a soft spot for Genki. You can grab stuff of the conveyer belt as it floats by, or if you are wary, they let you order off the menu. Win-win situation! I stear clear of anything with mounds of mayo, and I've never left with an upset stomach. Prices are pretty reasonable, and when I want a quick, casual and cheap sushi experience, we head here. Depending on your choices, and how hungry you are, you can get away with spending $10-$20 per person. Mahalos Genki.

This place takes a very long time to give out their orders. I understand there is a conveyor belt, but I don't know how long those dishes have been out so I like to order my food. It was not busy when I came in today but it took an extra 15 minutes between each thing I had order + refills of my hot tea to get my food. The servers didn't seem very interested in speedy service, just talking story to each other today which was unfortunate and they didn't seem very competent either. If you have a lot of patience and a good immune system (fish doesn't always seem fresh) you can come and eat here but you're better off just buying sushi from Safeway or Whole Foods.

People - this is conveyer belt sushi. In a strip mall. Is this the best sushi I've ever had? No. But not bad for cheap, convenient, and quick sushi. What you see is what you get. We are tourists just about to catch our flight back home, we were looking for a quick lunch near the airport before returning our rental car. This did the trick just fine. The servers were all incredibly nice and friendly. We ordered off the menu and our sushi came out in minutes. Had a couple plates off the conveyer belt as well. Everything looked pretty clean. The salmon and tuna I had were both fresh, no complaints. Would go back again for sure.

Think McDonalds mixed with sushi. This is a disrespect to sushi! Corn sushi?? Tuna salad sushi?? Fries?? No, no, no... The service was not good, the tea cups were dirty, with long waits to be seated and to pay. My husband and I ordered standard maki and rolls. The spicy tuna was good. All the makis had a teeny dab of something in the middle surrounded by huge amounts of rice and lots of seaweed paper. My husband had NEVER not finished his sushi until now. We came here because a magazine bragged it received best of in a Honolulu paper. It must have been a very small newspaper! With so many amazing sushi places in Hawaii, please don't bother. Even the sushi at nearby grocery stores was better than this.

Genki Sushi Kahului its time for us to boycott this location! I ordered half hour ago, lucky 2 out of 3 orders came. Asked for water and never did come to refill but asked if we where done. Service sucks and they never came back to say if my order was lost or coming or forgot. Trerrible neveragain cause this is the 2nd time service has left us forgotten. No appreciation and no tip. Owners better do something with training for customer service cause there's lots of competition as Maui grows.

This place takes a very long time to give out their orders. I understand there is a conveyor belt, but I don't know how long those dishes have been out so I like to order my food. It was not busy when I came in today but it took an extra 15 minutes between each thing I had order + refills of my hot tea to get my food. The servers didn't seem very interested in speedy service, just talking story to each other today which was unfortunate and they didn't seem very competent either. If you have a lot of patience and a good immune system (fish doesn't always seem fresh) you can come and eat here but you're better off just buying sushi from Safeway or Whole Foods.

Experience overall 2/10 Horrible experience in genkis, I told myself I wouldn't come here again after seeing a roach on the belt a few months back but after seeing ANOTHER roach on the belt AND bugs in our food, I'm positive that I won't be returning! Food 3/10 Bugs in udon, salmon still a little frozen, and roaches on belt. I definitely recommend everyone check their food before they eat it. On a good note, miso soup was alright, always kept our water full and bowls were tasty as well!

Love Genki sushi. Located in the Maui Mall in kahului. I'm a pretty simple person to please so it doesn't take much to make me happy. So this place is fast when they take your order. Sometimes it might take a while for you to get a booth or to get seated at the counter. I like to order from the waitress or waiter rather then from the belt. I also lice this place because they sell coca cola products :o) i just wish they serve alcohol lol. But hey that's okay.. Try the Maunaloa Roll its so ono.

This is the only type of sushi place with the rotating conveyer belt so genki has to do while I'm one Maui. It's always packed usually so I'd suggest getting he first available unless you're with a group and want to sit with each other. There are things for everyone, even people who doesn't like sushi. After a horrific display yesterday at the Lahaina location we decided to try the one in Kahului. All I have to say is amazing. From the wait staff to the wait times to the quality of food and service. Today we got here at 11:25 and at now 11:45 we have enjoyed our entire meal and refills and a few laughs with the staff. This place should be called "McDushi" since I agree with a previous review that this is basically McDonald's quality sushi. As much as I avoid McD's I would actually choose McD's over this place!! There is no cover over the food passing by so anyone can touch it and it's just continuously passing by catching the germs and airborne bacteria. There were items that passed by that had no label and even if they did I wouldn't have touched it since it looked awful and were smothered in mayo. There were also spam and hotdog sushi!!! What??!!! How much cheaper can you get than that??!! Those plates passed by continuously untouched and I was there for more than 45 mins! I did try some type of tuna roll that had tooooo many onions but otherwise was okay and a tempura Cali roll that was okay as well but cold and I could have done without it. I ordered a fresh cold drink but after 10-15 mins it hadn't arrived and after being there for 45 mins and seeing the same exact rolls pass by untouched and looking dry and extremely undesirable I couldn't take it any longer. The best part of this visit was when I walked out of the door and left. I've been to conveyor belt sushi restaurants before (not in Hawaii) and the food has been magnificent, higher quality, and actually cheaper! The sushi was also covered which made it at least more sanitary as it passed through the restaurant. I'm pretty certain I've never eaten at a worse place than this and I'm sad to say that and even have to write this review but I feel obligated to share this and the business should change or close. The wait staff were decent and I cannot complain about them.

My faves are: spicy tempura roll, seared spicy salmon, chicken karaage w: extra lemon, ika karaage and spicy tempura roll. I like to pronounce it Janky Sushi. Haha... But really, it's not half bad. It's better than the Lahaina location, that's for sure. I've grown to have a soft spot for Genki. You can grab stuff of the conveyer belt as it floats by, or if you are wary, they let you order off the menu. Win-win situation! I stear clear of anything with mounds of mayo, and I've never left with an upset stomach. Prices are pretty reasonable, and when I want a quick, casual and cheap sushi experience, we head here. People - this is conveyer belt sushi. In a strip mall. Is this the best sushi I've ever had? No. But not bad for cheap, convenient, and quick sushi. What you see is what you get. We are tourists just about to catch our flight back home, we were looking for a quick lunch near the airport before returning our rental car. This did the trick just fine. The servers were all incredibly nice and friendly. We ordered off the menu and our sushi came out in minutes. Had a couple plates off the conveyer belt as well. Everything looked pretty clean. The salmon and tuna I had were both fresh, no complaints. Would go back again for sure.

The service was not good, the tea cups were dirty, with long waits to be seated and to pay. My husband and I ordered standard maki and rolls. The spicy tuna was good. All the makis had a teeny dab of something in the middle surrounded by huge amounts of rice and lots of seaweed paper. My husband had NEVER not finished his sushi until now. We came here because a magazine bragged it received best of in a Honolulu paper. It must have been a very small newspaper! With so many amazing sushi places in Hawaii, please don't bother. Genki Sushi Kahului its time for us to boycott this location! I ordered half hour ago, lucky 2 out of 3 orders came. Asked for water and never did come to refill but asked if we where done. Service sucks and they never came back to say if my order was lost or coming or forgot. Trerrible neveragain cause this is the 2nd time service has left us forgotten. No appreciation and no tip. This is their first location on Maui (the second one is at The Lahaina Gateway Center). Originally started in Japan by Fumio Saito, he created the "kaiten sushi" concept and pioneered the use of the conveyor belt to serve sushi. Genki is popular place with Maui people with a wait of up to 20 minutes to be seated during lunch and dinner hours. Dual conveyor belts wind through the restaurant which they section off during slow hours. They offer counter or booth seating (which I prefer) and also have take-out. The staff is usually very attentive, asking what you want to drink or to place an "kitchen order". The sushi it self is pretty good for the price you pay. Nothing fancy. I usually get the ahi and salmon, baked mussels and the Kabocha. This is our usual place to go if you want a quick, not too filling and moderately priced sushi.

I am afraid I think it was because they were way more local looking. We asked for water to which they took a food order and asked if we were ready for our check without ever getting water. It is to bad because it is fun to try things off the belt and it is colorful decor. I just cannot stand lack of refills and just casual check ins to see how we are doing. I feel disappointed.

ATMOSPHERE: This is Maui's second conveyor belt sushi-style restaurant which opened in 2007. Clean & bright. Booth & counter style seating. FOOD: Karaage chicken - This is my favorite dish here. Deep-fried tender pieces of lightly flour or corn starch-dusted chicken. The batter has no real taste so I dip in soy sauce for some kick. Crab mayo sushi - My favorite sushi. Shredded imitation crab, mayo & tobiko. Spicy ahi - My partner's favorite. Ahi with a spicy mayo mixture. Better than in most places. Somen - White noodles with somen sauce, fish flakes and green onions. Very refreshing. Hot dog maki - You'd better believe I like this one! Hot dog, rice & furikake. Miso soup - Medium salty broth with small chunks of tofu. SERVICE: Used to be staffed with young kids with no concept of service, but as of this review, the service has been stepped up significantly. From arrival to departure, the service was top notch & consistent. OVERALL: While the fun of it is to grab your fave's off the conveyor belt, we always order directly from the server. Something about the food going round & round unprotected (sans for very few dishes) just doesn't appeal to us.

This is definitely the "better" genki. It gets really crowded during peak hours and they often run out of items for weeks at a time. Its not the best sushi but fairly cheap and fun for kids and adults. I personally don't trust the conveyor belt I like to order it from the waiter/waitress and get it fresh. Not the cleanest restaurant but it gets messy during peak hours. The staff here works really hard and is very friendly.

As far as kaiten-zushi (aka kuru kuru sushi), or sushi-go-round places go, this place is all right by me. I usually come with a group of friends. The staple spicy tuna sushi is our favorite always. My all time favorite is the spicy scallops! A thing about sushi-go-round places is that you CAN NOT expect restaurant type service. Places like these are more related to izakayas [snacking places like in Japan]. You can order from the menu or just grab off the conveyor. ASK for your drink or when ordering. They can not read your minds people! Genki Sushi around the nation are different from region to region. So naturally the taste will differ slightly from region to region. I have been to the ones in Japan and I have to say the Hawaii ones are pretty close in taste. Only the NW Pacific kaiten-zushi comes in close also. I'm sorry to say but the ones in California have a slight metallic "tang". I'm just saying. I don't mean to offend. If you feel for sushi and want to "hang out" with friends Genki Sushi is a good place to consider.

I give them 4 stars for convenience, good service and for no wait!!! Great last minute eats if you're craving for sushi and do not have the time! Right as you roll in, one of the hostess finds you either a booth or a bar seating. The sushi conveyor belt puts out cold sushi or sashimi such as salmon, ahi poke, tuna, natto roll (too afraid to try that one), and California rolls, etc. I would definitely order the tempura calamari next time instead of picking on up from a conveyor belt! Color coded plates from $2.90 and up. Fun place to bring young ones. They get a kick out of it!

BEST SPICY TUNA EVER! Have to get the spicy tuna 2 sushi pieces (not the roll) - it is their signature dish. Also good is the ahi poke, yellowtail, shrimp tempura rolls, and anything tuna. Salmon is not great because it is imported from alaska probably. Service is fast and you grab what you eat cuz it conveyor belt. You can eat a meal in 10 minutes for sure.

Clearly the whole "assembly line" sushi thing is hot here in Hawai'i. I see Genki Sushi restaurants everywhere and usually I take that to mean it's not the greatest choice for a taste-filled meal (I mean, you see McDonald's on every block, that doesn't mean it's going to be an amazing experience). But on a recent trip to Maui, finding a highly rated sushi place was a lot more difficult than I'd anticipated. A friend of mine suggested we give it a try, saying that she liked it, and I agreed to go, despite not liking the reviews. The thing that quickly tipped me was the difficulty in just sitting down. When a few people walk in and clearly half the place is empty, it shouldn't take five minutes to seat them. I believe our waitress was Lauren, and geesh, she was coarse. Eating was generally easy when we could grab what we needed from the items moving past, but Lauren didn't check with us soon enough or often enough. My dad happened to be along for this meal and he did not enjoy it at all. The look of disgust across his face made it hard to really analyze my meal, since I was trying to find grub options for him to try that were anti-sushi. My friend and I ate as quickly as we could so that my dad was relieved from pretending to eat. Despite the terrible company (my father), the food wasn't terrible and I left satisfied. It still wasn't the most amazing sushi I've ever had (I dreamed of my sushi from back home) but I got to eat a greater variety than just a single roll and try some new things. If I truly need a sushi fix in the future, I know I'm going to shell out some money for something awesome but this was a nice, fast food sushi experience!

Love this place, but maybe it's partly because we don't have one on the East Coast. I'm not saying it's great sushi, but it's better than your typical cheap dump. Also, the whole sushi-go-round experience is enjoyable... like a sushi buffet (even though you pay by the plate). You sit there, pick what you want, eat as you wish, and when you're done they just tally it up. Of course, someone like me is at danger not only of gaining weight but emptying their wallet. :P I'm not sure what people are talking about when they complain about cleanliness or service. Sure, the sushi sits on the trays a bit and isn't covered, but no one is coughing on it and it's not like it sits there for hours. Everything I've ever eaten there was fresh and I even saw the chefs making new plates in front of us. If you want something specific, just ask and they'll bring it out! As for attentive servers, I think we were asked about refills every time our glasses were half empty. Maybe I'm not picky, since this is the only Genki Sushi I've eaten at. I did eat at similar places in Kahului and Kihei years before, but they'd long since closed. However, this place has been there for 5+ years now and has always been reliable. If you're looking for some decent sushi for an OK price without trying some fancy place, just stop in at the Maui Mall and get your fish on!

I'm still on a quest to find a decent place to relax with fresh sushi, cold saki, warm people and authenticity. This place was horrible and i pray as i write this that I don't contact bochilism (sp) or TB. People rave about the conveyor belt, but this scares me. There's no guarantee that the food is fresh or safe. They say it is, but taste says otherwise. Cold food was semi cold and rubbery, sushi didn't taste fresh, and rice was chewy. I brought to my severs attention that my gyosa was cold and she brought me a warm one, but charged me for the cold one. The sneeze guard doesn't do that. The belt is eye level and the thought that someone could tamper with the food prior to making it to your table is nightmare invoking. You would think this place would be great considering that we waited several minutes for a table in the empty restaurant with plates going around and around like a merry go round. I wish i had something nice to say about this place, but even their bathroom was outside and across the open air mall. If you're in the mood to be disappointed and feel like complaining, come here.

I was disappointed eating at this place because the ones one Oahu are considerably better. Maybe it was a one-time thing, or the fact that we walked in late, but last night the rice on every single sushi plate I had was HARD. It's such a bummer when they can't even get the rice right! Also, everything on the conveyor belt looked old and tasted old. Is there no time limit for how long the food can stay on the belt? On the upside, everyone working seemed friendly.

We even ordered take out several times -- be prepared to wait 45 minutes..!!! Even when they're not busy. Lazy. First let me say that I have been to Japan twice and while there I have gone to a few sushi trains, and with most things in life. You get what you pay for. i have also been to Genki at least a half dozen times since moving to the island. And just like it is in Japan these are not high end sushi joints and there not intended to be. They are meant as fast & affordable alternatives. Is it the best? NO Is it good? YES is it cheap? YES Will I go back? HELL TO THE YA!!!!!! Why four stars? Because this place it's exactly what it's suppose to be. A simple, fast, cheap, no frills sushi train. :) You don't pay for a Honda and expect to drive home in a Ferrari? You don't buy a ticket to fly coach and expect to sit in first class? So don't go to a sushi train style sushi shop and expect top notch sushi. It just isn't going to happen. Tho sometimes you can be surprised. The spicy shrimp tempura roll here has a great flavor and I order one each time I go here. I love sushi and the quality of this sushi is what I like to call Grocery Store sushi. The quality isn't the greatest and it may have been sitting around for a while before you or some one else picks it up so it may not taste fresh but it's fast, and affordable.

The secret to eating at this restaurant is to always order off the menu. This ensures fresh and hot every time. The only time I would grab anything off the conveyor belt is during lunch time, and dinner. These are the times they ramp up production. My favorites are the spicy tuna, crab mayo, ahi poke! Fast-food sushi on a conveyor belt. You sit either on the counter or at a table next to the conveyor belt that has sushi going around. You can also order sushi (highly recommended). Some stuff was on the conveyor belt when we got there and it was still there when we left, so who knows how long some of the food has been on the conveyor belt. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. I think all the sushi was under $5 a plate, but don't expect top quality. Good place to go to satisfy a sushi craving without breaking the bank.

She stops in her tracks and says "...but you said you wanted just a water..." in a very irritated voice. My other friend says "yeah...he'd also like to drink a fruit punch if you have it...with his water". She just walks away seeming angry and gets the fruit punch. Very very odd...and uninviting...I have been a waitress at many places and that was so bizarre and would never fly. We then saw all the sushi on the belt ... It looked so old...I was starving so I grabbed a fresh veggie roll on there to first play it safe. I really wanted to put it back on the belt after one bite! I refrained, but it was that bad! The rice was sooo stale! How can veggie rolls be made poorly and how long was the rice sitting?! UGH traumatized lol! Don't know how anyone eats here...mega gross!! We noticed a common theme: no one was eating off the belt. Only ordering from their servers....hmmmm gross! We ordered just a couple small things since this place was already freaking us out. If you have spent a lot of money at nice restaurants during your Maui vacation, this is a good place to go for a price break and still get a good meal. It was my first time visiting a Genki Sushi (haven't been to the one here in Honolulu). I must say, I'm a fan! I had three plates for under $10, which included garlic chicken, spicy ahi, and a spicy tuna roll. Two of the plates I ordered from the menu and they arrived promptly, and the roll I picked up from the belt. The belt had lots of other good looking sushi and other items for very reasonable prices. They are a bit limited on seating if you have a bigger group, but the staff are friendly and attentive. Great overall option.

I like this place for the PRICE. That's about it. They do have a lot of sushi to choose from. Only problem is that they only put out fresh rolls every so often. ...and that makes me nervous, especially with sushi. Make sure to ask the sushi chefs for an order of the sushi you want instead of taking the ones off of the boat. It's tucked away in a shopping center, so it can be hard to spot. Make sure to check the store directory, to find out where it is.

I was suspect when the restaurant featured scowling faces on the doors and windows, but clearly that's the look of most customers as they leave. Service was disinterested, bordering on hostile. Food was what you would expect from a strip mall sushi joint, and the conveyer belt food was hard and dry. Avoid.

Before our trip to Maui I looked up places to eat and Genki Sushi got rave reviews so my boyfriend and I decided to try it. I walked in and was hesitant to even get seated but since the hostess was extremely nice I couldn't leave. We were seated and I immediately noticed the low-quality of their food. Genki is a kaiten style restaurant and it looked like the food had been sitting for hours. Not only was it a bit warm in there which is not good for raw sushi, but the colors of the conveyor belt and the plates were unappealing. In addition, it looked like they went out of control with their mayonnaise usage and they had these DIY rolls but the seaweed was soggy. The only plus to this place were that all the waitresses were friendly.

For what it is, this place is great. Very affordable, quick sushi, served on a train-style belt. You can also order fresh stuff from the menu. First of all, no surprises on price. You know how much each plate costs by its color. Not all the options on the belt are fresh, but a keen eye can easily discern. Service can sometimes be slow, but you just have to be a little assertive. Free hot green tea. the best deal i think is the Poke bowl. Fresh poke over warm rice for like $3. Are u kidding? Just avoid the simple sushi pieces and the overpriced dessert items... do you REALLY want that cupcake or mochi ball for $4? Better off going anywhere else nearby for sweets.

Conveyor-belt sushi for a quick dining experience. You do have the option to order sushi off the menu rather than grab it off the belt. I would suggest you do this. Some times, when the sushi chef is out making the sushi, you KNOW the plates on the belt are fresh, other times... I will admit, the plates can seem like they should have been taken off the belt already. This is why I always just order off the menu. Die-hard fan of Genki sushi ever since it first showed up on Oahu back in the day. Spicy tuna nigiri is always great. The Kahului site's ahi poke is also great (I remember the Waikele one wasn't always the greatest). I would also highly recommend their eggplant tempura nigiri. It's not shown on the menu, but just ask for it and they'll make it for you (egg plant deep fried in tempura batter and drizzled with mayo & unagi sauce). I think it's the best dish they have!

Pretty good for a quick sushi fix. It's never crowed and the sushi is fresh. Plus the kids find it entertaining to watch the food rotate on the belt. I had no problems of ordering from the wait staff if I didn't see what I want on the belt. The place is clean and the prices are cheap for the area. I wouldn't recommend the teriyaki chicken..you can get better at the food court. We order 2 bowls and wish we didn't, very bland and looks like it's been sitting some where for awhile....

The service here straight up sucks. We ordered take out and waited over 30 mins for some handrolls. One of our other friends went and sat down, ate off the belt, paid his bill and rejoined us and we still didn't have our sushi. Did I come here for the great sushi at Genki Sushi? ehh, sort of, but its more for the experience that you won't get at the mainland. The only other city I have seen this sort of cheap sushi on a conveyor belt was in London, and I can't remember the name of it. Something like this would not fly in the mainland, a food inspector would frown upon food being towed on a conveyor belt with no splach guard, too many food rules are broken at Genki Sushi, but the Hawaiians are so cool they have their own rules for everything! Ever seen a pig roasted in the sand? Just check out Sandy Beach, my review for that will be coming out soon, so stay tuned. . . Anyways, back to Genki, service was sub-par, but I was so hungry I didn't care, my eyes were on the dishes moving on the belt. Round and round we go with spicy tuna roll, california roll, and even cupcakes! If you want something you don't see, just flagged down a server and it'll take less than 5 mins for them to cook it up. The garlic chicken, a little crispy, but the sweet and spicy sauce more than makes up for it. For a fast food sushi joint, I thought it was pretty good, then again, we don't get fresh sushi on a daily basis like the islands, so my sushi taste buds could be non-discriminative especially when I'm hungry and have an empty stomach.

Sure it isn't Sansei, but it is consistent, good, and quick. I loved the place in Honolulu and I am glad to see them in Maui. Now we just need a Curry House.

Look, the sushi isn't great. But is that really why you came? No, you came because it's sushi on a conveyor belt, and that is awesome. Sushi whizzing by you on colored plates. Quick seating at conveyor belt sushi. Servers were adequate and got special order items quickly. Fun to pick and choose the various offerings passing by on the belt. Plate edge color determined the price at the end. It was easy to pick the fresher items and leave the less "fresh" unless your eyes are bigger than your tummy, which often happens. Go for the total experience.

We found this place while rushing to find something to eat prior to Warren and Annabelle's magic show. We were trying to find a place that we would be able to finish dinner in less than an hour, which for friday night seemed impossible (we were reconciled to the idea of taco bell). We found genki sushi in a little plaza, and it was perfect for what we were looking for. It is fast and convenient. We were able to sit ourselves when we walked in. It is a conveyer-belt style japanese restaurant, which means that drinks, food, and dessert are all on the belt circling. You can request anything from the menu that you do not see on the belt. We really liked the teriyaki chicken bowel. My fiance had a special roll, the "triple roll" i believe, which was delicious. Price was just right. For two people, around $30 with drinks and tip (we ate lightly with 5-6 dishes, may be more expensive if more dishes are ordered).

It you enjoy sushi please avoid this place at all cost! We had stopped here just for a snack before going to the airport, but I wish that we would have just gone somewhere else. Nothing here was fresh but it certainly was cheap. I'm just surprised that I didn't get sick on the plane. Although Genki Sushi is a chain all around the world even in Asia, conveyor belt sushi just does not work and can't possibly be fresh when no one is eating anything off that belt. the spicy tuna is good. get the one that is rolled up and you have to take the plastic out and put the seaweed wrap yourself. First i was confused on what to do but once i noticed there was instruction inside. It was simple. duh This place was very cheap got the Ahi Tuna Sashmi for only 4.95 and had 4 pieces. It tasted really fresh but I guess anywhere in Maui seafood would be fresh. Customer service was excellent. Every 3 minutes someone is checking up on us to see if we need anything.

BEST SPICY TUNA EVER! Have to get the spicy tuna 2 sushi pieces (not the roll) - it is their signature dish. Also good is the ahi poke, yellowtail, shrimp tempura rolls, and anything tuna. Salmon is not great because it is imported from alaska probably. Service is fast and you grab what you eat cuz it conveyor belt. You can eat a meal in 10 minutes for sure.

Right as you roll in, one of the hostess finds you either a booth or a bar seating. The sushi conveyor belt puts out cold sushi or sashimi such as salmon, ahi poke, tuna, natto roll (too afraid to try that one), and California rolls, etc. I would definitely order the tempura calamari next time instead of picking on up from a conveyor belt! Color coded plates from $2.90 and up. Fun place to bring young ones. They get a kick out of it!

This is their first location on Maui (the second one is at The Lahaina Gateway Center). Originally started in Japan by Fumio Saito, he created the "kaiten sushi" concept and pioneered the use of the conveyor belt to serve sushi. Genki is popular place with Maui people with a wait of up to 20 minutes to be seated during lunch and dinner hours. Dual conveyor belts wind through the restaurant which they section off during slow hours. They offer counter or booth seating (which I prefer) and also have take-out. The staff is usually very attentive, asking what you want to drink or to place an "kitchen order". The sushi it self is pretty good for the price you pay. Nothing fancy. I usually get the ahi and salmon, baked mussels and the Kabocha. This is our usual place to go if you want a quick, not too filling and moderately priced sushi.

We were ordering take-out because of poor service. We decided to give it another shot. The party across from us was getting 3 times as much help as we were. I am afraid I think it was because they were way more local looking. We asked for water to which they took a food order and asked if we were ready for our check without ever getting water. ATMOSPHERE: This is Maui's second conveyor belt sushi-style restaurant which opened in 2007. Clean & bright. Booth & counter style seating. FOOD: Karaage chicken - This is my favorite dish here. Deep-fried tender pieces of lightly flour or corn starch-dusted chicken. The batter has no real taste so I dip in soy sauce for some kick. Crab mayo sushi - My favorite sushi. Shredded imitation crab, mayo & tobiko. Spicy ahi - My partner's favorite. Ahi with a spicy mayo mixture. Better than in most places. Somen - White noodles with somen sauce, fish flakes and green onions. Very refreshing. Hot dog maki - You'd better believe I like this one! Hot dog, rice & furikake. Miso soup - Medium salty broth with small chunks of tofu. SERVICE: Used to be staffed with young kids with no concept of service, but as of this review, the service has been stepped up significantly. From arrival to departure, the service was top notch & consistent. OVERALL: While the fun of it is to grab your fave's off the conveyor belt, we always order directly from the server. Something about the food going round & round unprotected (sans for very few dishes) just doesn't appeal to us.

This is definitely the "better" genki. It gets really crowded during peak hours and they often run out of items for weeks at a time. Its not the best sushi but fairly cheap and fun for kids and adults. I personally don't trust the conveyor belt I like to order it from the waiter/waitress and get it fresh. Not the cleanest restaurant but it gets messy during peak hours. The staff here works really hard and is very friendly.

As far as kaiten-zushi (aka kuru kuru sushi), or sushi-go-round places go, this place is all right by me. I usually come with a group of friends. The staple spicy tuna sushi is our favorite always. My all time favorite is the spicy scallops! A thing about sushi-go-round places is that you CAN NOT expect restaurant type service. Places like these are more related to izakayas [snacking places like in Japan]. You can order from the menu or just grab off the conveyor. ASK for your drink or when ordering. They can not read your minds people! Genki Sushi around the nation are different from region to region. So naturally the taste will differ slightly from region to region. I have been to the ones in Japan and I have to say the Hawaii ones are pretty close in taste. Only the NW Pacific kaiten-zushi comes in close also. I'm sorry to say but the ones in California have a slight metallic "tang". I'm just saying. I don't mean to offend. If you feel for sushi and want to "hang out" with friends Genki Sushi is a good place to consider.

Clearly the whole "assembly line" sushi thing is hot here in Hawai'i. I see Genki Sushi restaurants everywhere and usually I take that to mean it's not the greatest choice for a taste-filled meal (I mean, you see McDonald's on every block, that doesn't mean it's going to be an amazing experience). But on a recent trip to Maui, finding a highly rated sushi place was a lot more difficult than I'd anticipated. A friend of mine suggested we give it a try, saying that she liked it, and I agreed to go, despite not liking the reviews. The thing that quickly tipped me was the difficulty in just sitting down. When a few people walk in and clearly half the place is empty, it shouldn't take five minutes to seat them. I believe our waitress was Lauren, and geesh, she was coarse. Eating was generally easy when we could grab what we needed from the items moving past, but Lauren didn't check with us soon enough or often enough. My dad happened to be along for this meal and he did not enjoy it at all. The look of disgust across his face made it hard to really analyze my meal, since I was trying to find grub options for him to try that were anti-sushi. My friend and I ate as quickly as we could so that my dad was relieved from pretending to eat. Despite the terrible company (my father), the food wasn't terrible and I left satisfied. It still wasn't the most amazing sushi I've ever had (I dreamed of my sushi from back home) but I got to eat a greater variety than just a single roll and try some new things. If I truly need a sushi fix in the future, I know I'm going to shell out some money for something awesome but this was a nice, fast food sushi experience!

Love this place, but maybe it's partly because we don't have one on the East Coast. I'm not saying it's great sushi, but it's better than your typical cheap dump. Also, the whole sushi-go-round experience is enjoyable... like a sushi buffet (even though you pay by the plate). You sit there, pick what you want, eat as you wish, and when you're done they just tally it up. Of course, someone like me is at danger not only of gaining weight but emptying their wallet. :P I'm not sure what people are talking about when they complain about cleanliness or service. Sure, the sushi sits on the trays a bit and isn't covered, but no one is coughing on it and it's not like it sits there for hours. Everything I've ever eaten there was fresh and I even saw the chefs making new plates in front of us. If you want something specific, just ask and they'll bring it out! As for attentive servers, I think we were asked about refills every time our glasses were half empty. Maybe I'm not picky, since this is the only Genki Sushi I've eaten at. I did eat at similar places in Kahului and Kihei years before, but they'd long since closed. However, this place has been there for 5+ years now and has always been reliable. If you're looking for some decent sushi for an OK price without trying some fancy place, just stop in at the Maui Mall and get your fish on!

I'm still on a quest to find a decent place to relax with fresh sushi, cold saki, warm people and authenticity. This place was horrible and i pray as i write this that I don't contact bochilism (sp) or TB. People rave about the conveyor belt, but this scares me. There's no guarantee that the food is fresh or safe. They say it is, but taste says otherwise. Cold food was semi cold and rubbery, sushi didn't taste fresh, and rice was chewy. I brought to my severs attention that my gyosa was cold and she brought me a warm one, but charged me for the cold one. The sneeze guard doesn't do that. The belt is eye level and the thought that someone could tamper with the food prior to making it to your table is nightmare invoking. You would think this place would be great considering that we waited several minutes for a table in the empty restaurant with plates going around and around like a merry go round. I wish i had something nice to say about this place, but even their bathroom was outside and across the open air mall. If you're in the mood to be disappointed and feel like complaining, come here.

I was disappointed eating at this place because the ones one Oahu are considerably better. Maybe it was a one-time thing, or the fact that we walked in late, but last night the rice on every single sushi plate I had was HARD. It's such a bummer when they can't even get the rice right! Also, everything on the conveyor belt looked old and tasted old. Is there no time limit for how long the food can stay on the belt? On the upside, everyone working seemed friendly.

We even ordered take out several times -- be prepared to wait 45 minutes..!!! Even when they're not busy. Lazy. First let me say that I have been to Japan twice and while there I have gone to a few sushi trains, and with most things in life. You get what you pay for. i have also been to Genki at least a half dozen times since moving to the island. And just like it is in Japan these are not high end sushi joints and there not intended to be. They are meant as fast & affordable alternatives. Is it the best? NO Is it good? YES is it cheap? YES Will I go back? HELL TO THE YA!!!!!! Why four stars? Because this place it's exactly what it's suppose to be. A simple, fast, cheap, no frills sushi train. :) You don't pay for a Honda and expect to drive home in a Ferrari? You don't buy a ticket to fly coach and expect to sit in first class? So don't go to a sushi train style sushi shop and expect top notch sushi. It just isn't going to happen. Tho sometimes you can be surprised. The spicy shrimp tempura roll here has a great flavor and I order one each time I go here. I love sushi and the quality of this sushi is what I like to call Grocery Store sushi. The quality isn't the greatest and it may have been sitting around for a while before you or some one else picks it up so it may not taste fresh but it's fast, and affordable.

The secret to eating at this restaurant is to always order off the menu. This ensures fresh and hot every time. The only time I would grab anything off the conveyor belt is during lunch time, and dinner. These are the times they ramp up production. My favorites are the spicy tuna, crab mayo, ahi poke! This location is definitely lacking. The food on the belt is old and nasty! Looks inedible, almost as if the leftovers were thrown back on the belt in a last attempt to sell it...The spicy tuna were stringy and tough. Service was ok, my main let down was the quality of the food, or lack thereof...will not be going back anytime soon...

Fast-food sushi on a conveyor belt. You sit either on the counter or at a table next to the conveyor belt that has sushi going around. You can also order sushi (highly recommended). Some stuff was on the conveyor belt when we got there and it was still there when we left, so who knows how long some of the food has been on the conveyor belt. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. I think all the sushi was under $5 a plate, but don't expect top quality. Good place to go to satisfy a sushi craving without breaking the bank.

Very clean, moderate wait, friendly service and great sushi! One can hunt off the conveyor belt, I prefer my sushi be fresh so I order off the menu. You have to try the spicy tempura, dragon roll, volcano roll, rainbow roll, and top it off with a hot bowl of miso soup! Da bomb!

I was suspect when the restaurant featured scowling faces on the doors and windows, but clearly that's the look of most customers as they leave. Service was disinterested, bordering on hostile. Food was what you would expect from a strip mall sushi joint, and the conveyer belt food was hard and dry. Avoid.

Before our trip to Maui I looked up places to eat and Genki Sushi got rave reviews so my boyfriend and I decided to try it. I walked in and was hesitant to even get seated but since the hostess was extremely nice I couldn't leave. We were seated and I immediately noticed the low-quality of their food. Genki is a kaiten style restaurant and it looked like the food had been sitting for hours. Not only was it a bit warm in there which is not good for raw sushi, but the colors of the conveyor belt and the plates were unappealing. In addition, it looked like they went out of control with their mayonnaise usage and they had these DIY rolls but the seaweed was soggy. The only plus to this place were that all the waitresses were friendly.

For what it is, this place is great. Very affordable, quick sushi, served on a train-style belt. You can also order fresh stuff from the menu. First of all, no surprises on price. You know how much each plate costs by its color. Not all the options on the belt are fresh, but a keen eye can easily discern. Service can sometimes be slow, but you just have to be a little assertive. Free hot green tea. the best deal i think is the Poke bowl. Fresh poke over warm rice for like $3. Are u kidding? Just avoid the simple sushi pieces and the overpriced dessert items... do you REALLY want that cupcake or mochi ball for $4? Better off going anywhere else nearby for sweets.

Conveyor-belt sushi for a quick dining experience. You do have the option to order sushi off the menu rather than grab it off the belt. I would suggest you do this. Some times, when the sushi chef is out making the sushi, you KNOW the plates on the belt are fresh, other times... I will admit, the plates can seem like they should have been taken off the belt already. This is why I always just order off the menu. Die-hard fan of Genki sushi ever since it first showed up on Oahu back in the day. Spicy tuna nigiri is always great. The Kahului site's ahi poke is also great (I remember the Waikele one wasn't always the greatest). I would also highly recommend their eggplant tempura nigiri. It's not shown on the menu, but just ask for it and they'll make it for you (egg plant deep fried in tempura batter and drizzled with mayo & unagi sauce). I think it's the best dish they have!

Pretty good for a quick sushi fix. It's never crowed and the sushi is fresh. Plus the kids find it entertaining to watch the food rotate on the belt. I had no problems of ordering from the wait staff if I didn't see what I want on the belt. The place is clean and the prices are cheap for the area. I wouldn't recommend the teriyaki chicken..you can get better at the food court. We order 2 bowls and wish we didn't, very bland and looks like it's been sitting some where for awhile....

Beware of this location. If you have a child in a high chair and your party is sitting in the booth, please please please make sure the wait staff does not serve hot tea on a serving tray. I wouldn't want any other child to be burned by hot tea being spilled on them. Sad to say, the manager told us that this had happened before.

The two stars is based primarily on the poor customer service I received at this location. We went in one hour prior to closing and waited 10 minutes to be seated in a room that was occupied by 3 families. Not a great start for a hungry crowd. We were seated and it took another 5 minutes for us to receive any type of beverage or to get our orders taken. There were 3 employees standing at a counter across from where we were seated refilling the stock while talking to one another. Finally, one of them turned around and asked if we wanted to order anything with an unhappy tone. We ordered, waited for our food to come and never heard from them until we were ready to leave. We got up and walked over to the cashier and we just stared at each other until I mentioned that I was ready to pay. He asked for our stub and I told him we didn't receive one. "Well, how am I supposed to cash you out if you don't have it?" OMG! I put my sassy face on and asked for the manager. All in all the manager was empathetic and apologized but I left with a really bitter taste in my mouth.

Ok, I am IN LOVE with Genki Sushi on Oahu. This past July I visited Maui though and decided I had to get some at this location even though I'd seen a lot of bad reviews on it. I had to have my spicy tuna and my seaweed salad sushi! Anyway, I don't Yelp that much, but I had such a great experience that I had to do a review for them since they get such low reviews. I had called ahead to see if I could make it there on time, as they were closing shortly and I was driving 20 miles to get it. Once nearby we got lost and I called them again and told them we were in Kahului but lost and PLEASE don't close. They were super nice and kept the door open 10 minutes past closing so I could pick up my sushi. Everyone was very very nice and the sushi tasted great! So I would say don't necessarily believe these reviews, but check this place out for yourself. If you think the sushi on the belt looks old, you are free to order fresh made sushi from the waiter or waitress. Mine was fresh and delicious. The spicy tuna at Genki Sushi is worth trying at all costs!!!
