Old time goodie in industrial Kalihi. Local Boys Cafe has been around since 1993 and has weathered several economic downturns over those several decades. Some my earliest recollections about Local Boys was the friendly demeanor of the owner/cook, Wes. He always popped his head out of the kitchen to give patrons a howzit and thank you for coming by- this friendly and caring attitude is still there to this very day. Local Boys was the first if not one of the first plate lunch purveyors to offer fish with a lemon butter caper sauce. Unheard of for a plate lunch establishment back in the 90s. Like many small businesses in industrial Kalihi, there is no parking, much of the business is derived from the hardworking stiffs who populate the area- there are 4 small booths so you know most of the sales are take out. This is a great place to come for some local grinds at a reasonable price. Teri-beef, baked chicken, shoyu chicken, fish dishes, chili hot dog, they are all here and even more specials to boot. I am partial to their baked chicken plate, a nice roasted skin that is cooked just right to keep the meat nice and soft and not too dry. The chili hot dog plate is a treat that I like to get once in awhile, almost like a beans/frank plate as he slices up the hot dog to get the taste more uniform in the serving. (eh, like small kid time) They usually have a fish fish option and I like the mahimahi with the lemon butter caper sauce when it's available. That is the dish I remember them most for. Whenever I get the chance I pop in to get some grinds, talk story (a little) with Wes (if he's not too busy) and know that when I leave he will always thank me (as he does with everyone) for coming by. It's always good to feel appreciated, yeah? Local Boys is an old time hole-in-the-wall grinds cafe that illicits memories of days gone by when hash slingers ruled the industrial districts of Honolulu.

My family and I had breakfast here! So many choices to choose from! Michelle was the best hostess and chef Wes is such a great cook! She even gave us both gravies when we couldn't decide which one, very accommodating to my big family (there were 8 of us!) very fast service and very friendly!! We will definitely be coming back to this place when we visit again!!!

Wes truly always hooks it up...I've used him to cater birthday parties, funerals and company office parties....his prices are awesome. He'll ask you what you want to spend and then make a custom menu to suit your taste and budget. I love their Roast Pork and Mahi with caper butter sauce. It's a hole in the wall but definitely a favorite of mines

This place is amazing, they treat you right and you'll never leave hungry that's for sure. I have nothing negative to say about local boys, truly a great place for breakfast or lunch. Mahalo local boys

Food is awesome. Auntie and uncles service and hospitality is top notch. I'd eat there everyday. Relaxing place to grind.

This place gotta be one of the best places to eat on the island. All the food is great, price is right, and service is very friendly. As others have said parking is a challenge, but it's worth the patience.

The best local breakfast in the whole Oahu Island!! The food was cheap but very yummy. The owners, Michelle and Wes, treated us like family being invited over for breakfast. definitely a must when visiting Oahu. Parking is a bit tricky. We told our server Michelle and got a spot open for us. Best recommendation to try: Hash Moco with Stew

Great place for local plate lunches. This place is tucked away in the back areas of Nimitz on Democrat St: I still love all the wacky names of streets in this area (e.g. Hoe St.); or the name Dyke's Market always make me chuckle for some reason. They have a tons of various local-style grindz. I love their Beef Stew or Teri Chicken plates. Their Mahi and Hamburger Steak Combo is also pretty fricken great. The plates are also pretty cheap, and the staff are really friendly local gal and guy(s). They make the plates pretty fast, and they get you in-and-out in no time: probably because parking is almost non-existent. It would probably be best if you had a friend and did a drive-by order pick-up. While waiting, I love looking at all their personal memorabilia on the walls: There local-kine pictures always makes me kind of nostaglic of growing up in Hawaii (even though I don't know any of the folks in the pictures). Great, really-local place that serves up some cheap and good food.

Check out the photos i posted. Good size portions but parking is the biggest problem. Send your friend in like I did. I didn't get to go in and check it out but the food was good. Happy hunting. G

Was feeling nostalgic and went to Local Boys last week early one morning to get me some breakfast. Haven't been here in over a decade and the place hasn't changed. Pics of local celebs adorn the walls and seems like the original 3×5 menu cards have been holding up well. Ordered myself a Local Boy breakfast...suffice to say the fried rice didn't hold up to what I remember from years gone by, a little too oily and the bacon barely seen time on the grille. Hopefully if I can make it there for lunch one day, the Local Boy's Ahi will take me back...

For the price - YOU CANNOT BEAT IT! Local local food though- if you want the spam and rice or any other meat and rice then - Bring it! Food: Had more than a few times, hambuger and salad or cheeseburger and salad. Great for $2.50- can't complain no matter what at that price. Local kind salad dressing that is like a mix between French and 1000 with a hint of a lot more flavor. Salad was tossed and just normal good other side choices like mac or rice white or brown. Turkey and normal Loco Moco's served to order- tasted just great! Area: About the area- be ready for a homeless person to walk up behind you while there and ask if 'you still got breakfast' at whatever time of the day. It is located at the 'docks' neighborhood- so it is low class blue collor fast eat and get out kind of place. Be ready to park on the street and good luck.

Been coming here since my college days and this place is still the same. Friendly staff and shitty parking. But the food is good and its worth driving around the block several times. My favorite is any of the seafood dish. The special butter caper sauce compliments any of their fish dishes. Their Calamari steak is tender and soft. And you gotta get their toss salad. Their homemade dressing is AWESOME. If you looking for good local food then this is the place. If you cannot find parking just block the driveway into their place. Otherwise catch the bus or keep on driving around the block. Or come in at 4am get plenty parking!

The Ultimate Hole in the Wall Located in an area that is noted for it's industrial roots, they have been around for decades. They were one of the first ones to offer mahimahi with a lemon butter caper sauce as a plate lunch offering. Local Boys is one of the ones that started the plate lunch upgrade movement back in the 90s. Just a couple of tables and only street parking, getting there can be challenging but it's worth it. Favorites include baked chicken, shoyu chicken, beef stew, and the lemon butter sauce fish, their bento plates are perfect for pick up meals if you are catching a flight, especially since the stuff the planes are offering is outrageously priced and not that great. (You listening United?) Their toss salad (instead of mac) comes with a nice french dressing that is really good. No desserts, no fancy side salads, just honest to good local style plate lunches that tastes great and is generous in quantity and won't break the bank. Local Boys No Ka Oi!

Lucky to have got to this place on our vacation. If I lived on Oahu this place is at the top of the list to go get some ono food. If you don't know what "ono" means Google it. The prices and the amount of food you get can't be beat. Even though I mentioned price and quantity don't take it as if the food is ok, the food is excellent. Got to taste the all meat, Eric's 3 pointer and the beef stew. And got to sample the curry, ono! I will say this, if the food doesn't appeal to you just the fact of meeting Wes and the girl helping (didn't get her name) will make your day. The nicest people you could ever meet. Will definitely be looking forward to getting back to this place.

Another KHNL Cheap Eats place that I tried. This place has choke take out orders so I would recommend coming before the lunch rush. We went at about 11am and after we ordered the line went to the door. Since it's Friday I had the laulau and beef stew combo ($6.95 tax included). The beef stew was good and meat tender. The laulau was tasty but could tell it was sitting in the steamer or warmer for a few hours and some of the ends had a little brunt taste. It was full of pork, beef and fish so that was a plus. Next time I'm going to try their big boy hamburger steak plate ($6.25 tax included) and comes for 3 scoops of rice, 3 hamburger patties, and 2 scoops of mac salad. Now that's for go sleep!

I always get the $2.50 cheeseburger w/toss salad. A friend of mine turned me on to this place and I love their burgers. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the parking and hours are not that great. You are lucky if you get a parking stall and I wish they were open on the weekends. I did not try anything else from here only because I've never had a chance to go out there and really look at their menu. But for a $2.50 burger, you can't go wrong with that.

I've been going to this place for many years especially when I get the craving for a great hamburger steak plate. I think the owner's name is Wes and he and his crew are very friendly and get your food quickly. Always try one of the fish plates also as you probably won't find anything this good for these prices. Go early and have someone driving so you can jump out while they wait in the car as chances are you won't find anywhere to park.

I love this place. Good food and friendly staff. Awesome customer service. I always get fish. Mahi or opakapaka local boy style. It is prepared with garlic, butter and capers. And the dressing on the tossed salad is ono too. Keep up the great job Wes.
