Had sushi here after hiking Diamond Head and thought it was great. They stick to the basic tuna, salmon, eel, and egg, but do those very well. You can tell the ingredients and flavors are the focus of the people working here. Coming from New York, the prices were great.

Food is delicious for a low price. Got the crunchy lava rock. Cashier is pretty nice, It's an order and go type place no real service other than ordering.

I was looking for food in the area was thinking about Pioneer Salon across the street but since I've already tried there I wanted to try something new and came across this place via Yelp. I also noticed that they have very high reviews so of course that caught my interest. The first thing that caught my eye was the jalapeno roll which was premade sitting in the fridge. This roll was good, it had shrimp in the middle, on top spicy tuna with a slice of jalapeno on each piece. It wasn't super hot, and matched well with the shrimp. I also had made to order namida and namida tekka. Namida is the leaves of the wasabi plant. I believe they mix it with dry wasabi so it was very pungent. I think if they used fresh wasabi mixed with the leaves that would help to tone it down so it isn't as potent but that would be costly. Overall it was good, just be prepared to have your nose cleared out. Other than that I tried the ume cucumber maki, which really isn't different from what you can get anywhere else. The sushi here was fresh, better than Ninja and definitely better than Genki. Worth the price and good for "fast food" sushi. They were really friendly. The hardest part is finding parking the parking is shared with a bunch of other businesses so it was full, I needed to find parking across the street.

They get fresh ahi daily! Such a great deal for sushi in town! Ryu is the main chef and owner from Japan and he is so friendly. So much fresher and better than any other fast food sushi places on island. I recommend the avocado natto ahi bowl and the big island roll.

I'm so happy that I found this place! It is my go-to sushi spot when I want something quick and delicious. The owner is so nice and he's always there rolling sushi in the back (at lightening speed). The prices are unbeatable for the portions, freshness and flavor. My go to's are the spicy tuna roll, crunchy lava roll, and poke bowl. They also have daily specials that are always delicious and are such a deal! Do yourself a favor and check this place out, you won't be let down.

I love this cute lil shop and it's really not bad of a price range. Also they have specials too from 10am-2pm I believe but it changes every month but I would always come here if I was craving sushi for lunch when I was at work. Also if you're going to pay by card you have to make a minimum purchase of at least $10.

This place is awesome!!! The fish is super fresh and the price is just right. I love coming here for lunch but it's nice for dinner as well. They have tables inside and outside. I like eating outside and people watch!!! The owner is from Japan and he really cares about the quality. This place is a must!!!

Newly opened this summer. 2014年夏に新しくオープン。 They serve authentic Japanese quality sushi. If you love wasabi, must try NAMIDA. Ahi Namida and lunch specials are my recommend! Sushi chef is from Japan, sushi is very reasonable and so fresh! Hope they don't change quality and price.

Found it in Yelp, Probably some of the best sushi I ever had. Fair prices. 5 Stars!!!

Just had dinner with my wife here. We were very relieved to get such good sushi at such a good price. The ahi seemed very fresh, and eel was very good as well. Very small dining area, but it was clean and inviting. The girl behind the counter was very nice, and the food came out quickly. Overall, an extremely nice, relaxing dining experience, just outside all the noise and busyness of Waikiki.

You can't beat the prices or the food! The service was also great and the place is spotless! Definitely recommend!

Absolutely fantastic. Each roll (6 pieces) is around $3 and miso about $1. I've sampled sushi all around the world including Tokyo and this place is amazing. Truly a value to be had and one of the secrets of Honolulu.

I just took take out to the beach and chowed down to the best poke bowl I have ever eaten. It was my first time there, and I was not expecting it to be so good. Rivals, or even betters, Pa'ina Cafe's bowls.

Very affordable, very good quality. Sashimi bowl is great! Fish pieces are cut very well, and served at the right temperature.

Just had their shoyu poke bowl for $6 :) So delicious, fresh and satisfying !! We also had the avocado spicy ahi bowl. Soooo good :) The 2 ladies there are so friendly too.

It's a small, clean, and cozy sushi place that you must not miss! Their sushi was fresh and the bowls were in good portion. We had the daily special ahi bowl for only $6. It was delicious! Price was very reasonable and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

I AM FROM JAPAN AND LOVE THE PLACE. GOOD AS SUSHI RESTAURANT THOSE CHARGE YOU SO MUCH. NEW OWNER. SO NOT SAME AS THE HORRIBLE SUSHI PLACE IT WAS BEFORE. I live next to the hawaii sushi and again I am from Japan. There for I know what is good sushi is. The store is amazing. The sushi chef is from Japan too. So fresh and use good quality products yet so affordable. I don't eat fast food sushi but this is the best one you can go in Hawaii. try Local Ahi special.

Got the Hawaii Sushi Roll and Sashimi Bowl. Absolutely delicious with their premium rice and fresh fish! What more can you ask for? Highly recommended.

  • Thomas S.

Great place for the prices they offer! Make sure to take advantage of daily specials, ad mentioned in previous reviews. I stuck to the classics, and got the tekka bowl. For the price ($10), you got a plentiful serving, and sashimi cuts of tuna that appear to have been seasoned or marinated in some way before being placed in the bowl. Try to stay as varied as possible, seeing that this little shop has a lot of variety in their plates. All in all, a quaint, cozy little Japanese restaurant...just opened three mos. ago. Lots of promise in this little joint!

Lava tube sushi is ok... similar to the hawaiian roll. Their prices are pretty good and their bowls are very interesting. Will need to try the bowls next time. People inside are very nice and welcoming.

FIVE STARS!!! excellent food and for SUCH cheap prices too!! Their rolls are sold at much cheaper prices throughout the day if they aren't sold within a couple hours. The lunch special is such a good deal too I'm sad we didn't make it in time. Service is great the people are nice. The dining area is pretty small but it seems more like a "pick up your food and leave" kind of sushi place. I loved this place. So happy thank you yelp!!

Hawaii Sushi is a welcomed addition to the Diamond Head neighborhood! The sushi is SO much better than other take-out sushi joints in town. It's also unbelievably inexpensive - I have no idea how the owner charges so little! Speaking of the owner - wonderful! Patient, always smiling, personable, and hard working. Some of the best customer service I've experienced on island. Hawaii Sushi has quickly become one of my favorite go-to lunch spots for cheap, healthy eats.

Excellent: the portions of fish are very generous, quality is excellent. Just ordered the "Hawaii Combo" and asked to change the Tomago for another Shrimp... Not a problem at all... Polite "Aloha" service is much appreciated! I will be back! (Ahi was great... It was all great!) You won't be disappointed!

  • Jayden L.

I really enjoyed this place! The sushi was good and fresh, I liked the feel, and the staff was very friendly. No phone number which makes it hard to do take out, and very limited parking. I don't have pictures of the food because everything was take out and wasn't exactly picture worthy. I really wish that it was a bigger restaurant so I can sit in and eat it on a plate. The food: The fish was very fresh! I tried the Lave Tube Roll, Sunset Roll, chirashi bowl, uni nigiri, ahi nigiri, salmon nigiri, and hamachi nigiri. Yes I ordered quite a bit. Most of what they offer is made to order kind of in front of you. The nigiri was very good and fresh. Very simple, and very cheap, only about $3 for 2 pieces. The uni was awesome! Very creamy and fresh! It was on special $6 for 2 pieces. The original rolls were pretty good but Not the best. I liked that they didn't stuff it with imitation crab like how most original rolls go. The chirashi bowl was part of their daily specials that end at 2:00, lucky I decided to go there earlier and made it. This was my least favorite item and I would probably not order it again. It had diced up tamago, shiitake mushrooms, ebi, ahi poke, and ikura. It went from $11 to $6, but I would not pay more than $6 for it, and feel bad for anyone who did. I am only harsh because I enjoyed everything else so much.

I came this place in the evening. I just walked in and waited for 10 minutes. This place looks warm and clean. Food is good and the services is fine. One thing I didn't feel really good is when I left that place, I said thank you to the lady at reception but she didn't response to me. I felt that they don't welcome me back.

Three of us came in after a quick hike up diamond head. We got the avocado poke bowl, spicy ahi bowl and crunchy lava rock sushi. Everything was terrific; they were also kind enough to let us use their wifi to get w few things done before a business meeting. We will definitely be back!

Cute little sushi shop. It ain't fancy but the local rolls were great and the people were nice. I'll bet it's great for a quick lunch stop.

This is a really nice, small restaurant near Diamond Head. The furniture has a welcoming tone. The food tastes excellent. What's got me coming here after school frequently is their $6 lunch specials from 11am-2pm. Usually it's a "bowl" like a poke bowl or another type of fish. Occasionally they serve sushi as the special. Very delicious and competitive, I don't know where else you can find an excellent tasting poke bowl for $6. The only downside is the parking lot is small and shared with some other businesses so don't expect to find parking right away. *update February 2015 they no longer offer their daily specials until 2pm now they only sell up to 30 a day and that usually runs out when I get here at 1:40 after my classes so technically I won't really be coming here often as the regular price for these bowls are $11 (really pricey compared to other places like ono seafood)

The house that my boyfriend and I were staying at during our vacation to Hawaii was within walking distance of Hawaii Sushi and we're very glad it was. This was the first place we went to when we got to Hawaii. It's a very small place and seems a lot of people do take out instead but we ate in and it was nice. The prices are very decent and the food is delicious, made to order. We came here a second time during our stay and got the daily deal of the salmon poke bowl for just $6 - well worth it!

  • Dane K.

Nice little small sushi place that is hidden! Food was great for its price. I got the spicy ahi bowl and a hamachi nigiri and a salmon nigiri. Hamachi was dirt cheap and the quality was nice! Same for the salmon! Sushi was very fresh! Fresher than genki. One of the freshest sushi to go places i have eaten at. Beats genki and kozo by miles!!! Service was great too as they were very catering and helpful towards the customers! Also very proper and polite! Definitely will come back here!!

  • Sasha D.

I love this sushi restaurant. The prices are right, sushi chef is always greeting the customers and the food is delicious. I always check out the refrigerator to spot out the special of the day. It blows my mind how cheap this place is for sushi.

After a walk up Diamond Head, this tourist, his family tried this modest, friendly, sushi diamond for lunch. A straight-forward sushi spot, we thought of as a 'simple is beautiful' case in point. We ended up ordering three separately happily (gluttonous) times. Everything is good from our perspective - daily specials ++ Go for the fresh fish, stay for the simple aloha.

I don't give five stars. They are earned. Hawaii Sushi is top tier. Please do not heed the advice of any negative reviewers who would not know quality fish if I slapped a fresh tuna across their face. Fast, clean, and consistent. Yanagi for a night out. Hawaii Sushi for every day in between. Amen.

My ahi poke bowl was delicious! I got there towards the end of the day and all the pre made rolls in the display case were discounted. Overall, great value!

"Eat to Live or Live to Eat"? I'm sure that you've heard that quote before and I'm confirming that I Live to Eat like most of the Yelp Community. In fact, as I've been getting older, I seem to have fallen into the category of "working out more so I can eat more". We roam about the Diamond Head and Waikiki neighborhood during our brisk and sometimes leisurely walks. That being said, we've discovered several dining options that we dare say are also healthy. Hawaii Sushi falls into tasty and healthy. We haven't been here for dinner so we can only speak about their lunch specials ($6 poke bowls) but, if dinner is anything like lunch then we'd probably drive back here in the evening. The prices match the food quality and portion sizes. Their menu includes sushi and bowls that are not usually found at other Japanese restaurants, such as Hamachi Jalapeño rolls or Crunchy Lava Rock roll (shrimp California roll topped with spicy ahi, spicy sauce, fried onions, eel sauce and green onion) or Avocado Ahi Natto bowl. Their service is quick, efficient and friendly. The seafood is fresh and put together well into sashimi plates, sushi rolls, combination plates or bowls. They even cater or prepare party plates. The only drawback about this business is the lack of dining space and sometimes parking. But, that's ok since you can have your sushi as a takeout and go grab something to drink at another business in this arcade of shops. I have to give credit to fellow Yelp friends, Mike O. and Jack W. for reviewing this business that I'll call worthy of my repeated returns while in the DH/Kapahulu/Waikiki neighborhoods. #329

Cute small shop that really has a mixed Hawaiian feel with a Japanese flavor. They have many menu items that are available as well as a monthly special that will keep you coming back. I had the spicy ahi bowl and this is one of the softest smoothest spicy ahi that I have eaten! It was so wonderfully prepared and pretty. I am coming back for sure to get more of the poke bowls that they have.

  • Michael C.

Yes the sushi is good, but the service is lousy. Maybe she was upset that she had to work today or what. No hello except from the workers way in the back. I should have taken that as a sign. Decided to leave after she let someone who came in after me cut ahead. Oh we'll probably won't be back.

    1. VERDICT/VALUE Come for the $6 bowl lunch specials. The food is good, but the prices / small portions outside of lunch lose out to the competition. I also suggest takeout to avoid dining with bugs. 2. FOOD The Zuke Tekka Bowl ($11) came with 8-9 pieces of marinated tuna sashimi on top of rice, garnished with nori, sesame seeds, three small slices of cucumber, baby ginger, and wasabi. Great taste, but the small size will leave you wanting for more, or another dish. The Roll Combo ($10) comes with 18 pieces of maki, 6 each of: California roll (made with shrimp here, and not with imitation crab), eel cucumber, and spicy ahi (tuna). Solid yumminess! The Miso Soup ($1.50) is decent and good-sized for the price. 3. SERVICE Great for what is primarily a takeout place. The food prep can involve a wait since it can be busy with takeout orders, but the food quality make it all worthwhile. 4. ATMOSPHERE The presence of just a few tables in the small space make this more of a takeout joint. Parking can be a bit of an issue with a small lot servicing a number of popular establishments in the building. I recommend takeout only because the door is left open all of the time - so while I'm thankful they have the ant traps out, it's tough to contend with the flies, and on this night, fought with four persistent flies landing on our food constantly (and ultimately sticking to it, given our food choices. It's almost funny to see flies stick to the rice or fish and not move off when being pushed in the garbage bins individually!). The counter also had flies too when we were returning our dishes, so I will likely stick to takeout next time.

When I look back on our very short trip to Honolulu, I'll remember Hawaii Sushi as my very favorite restaurant. Thanks to Yelp, my girlfriend and I found this gem a little over a mile away from our hotel. After eating the food, honestly, I would've walked five. Easy. Located in a quiet neighborhood and away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy Waikiki, this hideaway resides at the end of a small strip mall on Monsarrat Avenue. It's clean, the guy who greeted us is also the chef, and the prices -considering the portions- are incredibly affordable. My boo and I shared two pokes (spicy salmon and tuna) as well as the Hawaiian Sushi Combo. Tuna Poke: probably some of the freshest tuna I've ever tasted. With huge slices of this mouth-watering awesomeness and freshly cooked sweet rice, everything tasted so amazing going down. I would consider stabbing my cousin in the eye with a chopstick for another bite of this stuff. Kidding, but sort of serious. ($11) Spicy Salmon Poke: Also delicious. Like the tuna, you'll take satisfaction in devouring a hearty serving of sliced salmon, and the sauce on top is a nice touch. Hawaii Sushi Combo: With a salmon, yellow tail, shrimp, eel, and two ahi nigiris and an ikura, I seriously died a little bit. Each nom was incredibly fresh, and really a steal for the price. The ikura and ahi, especially, blew me away. ($12) For the prices, quality of fish, and speed and friendly service, Hawaii Sushi is hands down my favorite restaurant (and possibly even place) on Oahu. If I lived in the area, I would be a regular. ;)

Like everyone else has mentioned, $6 lunch specials are where it's at! Every day of the week has a different special, and the specials change monthly. For the rest of October 2014, Thursdays will get you a salmon poke bowl, Fridays, a spicy snow crab, and Saturdays a spicy tuna bowl! The fish here is really fresh, and the salmon poke had huge chunks of salmon that were tender and flavorful. The salmon poke had onions, tobiko (fish eggs), and ogo (seaweed). When you order poke from counters (like foodland, safeway, etc), you might get some pieces that are stringy or chewy, and the pieces of fish are all different sizes. Not so with Hawaii Sushi! All of the pieces were meticulously cut. The poke bowl also came with sushi rice! Another bonus. The bowl was premade, sitting in a little refrigerated thing, but everything tasted fresh. I took a look at their menu and the rolls and nigiri were well priced! You can get rolls from $3-11 each. Bowls are typically $11, which would be steep, in my opinion. The quality is great, but the serving size is not worth $11. For that you could get a pound of poke elsewhere! But a $6 lunch special? Can't be beat! I'll definitely come back and try their rolls too.

New favorite spot for lunch on Monsarrat! They have amazing lunch specials!! The day I went, I got a roll combination thing for $6!!! Such a deal, on the regular menu it was a lot more expensive. I got a unagi roll, spicy ahi roll and a California roll--three of my favorites!! I also bought a salmon roll because I was skeptical that such a good deal would be enough to feed me. I was wrong to be skeptical. It was way more than enough and I had leftovers for a mid afternoon snack haha. The cashier was very friendly, and they tried to make it a but cooler in the small eating area by placing one of those portable AC things by the tables. Otherwise it'd be pretty hot I think. The parking situation was pretty tight during lunch hour, but there are usually plenty of spaces of the street. I will definitely be back for lunch specials!! Wooo!

The daily $6 special is worth 5 stars. Today was the ahi special. Large cuts of fresh ahi on 4 nigiri. 6 pieces of tekka and 3 pieces of Cali roll. Ok, now I'm a believer !!!

This was a nice find. Very good quality sushi at surprisingly competitive prices compared to other sushi shops. Caters to many Japanese nationals, so the quality is high. About a 15 minute walk from the Hyatt Place or the Marriott Waikiki. You won't be disappointed here.

  • Angela Y.

AWESOME that they always have a lunch special!! When I went, the spicy ahi bowl was the lunch special of the day; $6 only, compared to other places which cost a little more, and have smaller portions. Recently opened; its a cute little sushi place located in the same centre as the famous Bogarts Restaurant and Diamond Head Health Cove Bar. The owners are very friendly, and always sweet to offer us water while we dined in. Sushi may not be your first choice after a workout session, but give them a try! Avocado ahi bowl is to die for. A bit pricey, but the customers love it! I would say to just be sure to check out what they have on their lunch special of the day, and get that! Down side is that they don't have a microwave, so the spicy ahi bowl I had was eaten with cold rice. My new sushi place for donburri!

Very good food for a great price. I got the combo sushi plate and it had nice portion sizes. My favorite was the shrimp roll but they were all tasty and refreshing with quality ingredients. My husband had the lava tube roll and he said it was delicious. We will be sure to stop by again :)

I'm a tourist from California, and my friends and I were looking around for the best sushi options. This place definitely didn't disappoint! Sure, the anterior is small, but when you're in a tourist dominated area, most people are just looking to go in and out. The sushi is fresh and tasted heavenly. Especially after a few days of restaurant food, this was refreshing. Plus, the owner was the most adorable, happy person ever. Whereas most tourist attraction people seem like they are too done or can care less, this sushi maker seemed like he was enjoying life and his job. Great place, hella recommend (especially since we have high food expectation among from the Bay Area)

  • Kimo S.

The best lunch deal in town for sushi, everything is just so fresh and the $6 lunch deal is a steal. The lunch bowl is a little small for a complete meal but pair this up with a $3 spicy tuna roll and you're doing fantastic now and still under $10.00. Their spicy tuna rolls are such a deal and they have some amazing fresh wasabi which looks like relish but is the most amazing wasabi, ever. Namida I believe is the name. Grab a roll of that or get it on top of a roll, it is awesome! This place used to be Aloha Sushi but it is one of the best little take out places around Kapahulu/Kaimuki and that's saying a lot given the high concentration of sushi spots around.

    (5)
  • Shay F.

I got a natto roll and a cucumber/ume roll from here and I thought they were ok. They had a wide selection of sushi so I have to go back to try their other items. They even have daily specials so if you're looking for a new sushi place, this is it!

    (3)
  • Jenn S.

Don't know if it's a daily lunch special, but I got the shoyu poke bowl for only $6. It was very satisfying and the whole bowl was well garnished/seasoned. They have reasonable prices for sushi and has friendly service. Cash only though!!
