I've eaten here a few times now and I really like this restaurant. The food is really good. I usually order burritos, so I've gotten the Burrito Deluxe and Burrito Del Mar, which are both delicious. One of my friends got the Pollo ala Ranchera once and really liked that. Overall I think the food is is reasonably priced and worth it. The service is average. The drinks are expensive but HUGE (the large margarita was bigger than my face). I will definitely go here again in the future.

Best Mexican food in Macon, hands down! This is a regular spot for me and I'm never ever disappointed. Everything I've tried here has been absolutely delicious, but a few of my favorite dishes are: Taquitos Mexicanas, Agave Special, Chimichangas with beef tips. Not only is the food amazing, but the entire waitstaff & management are so nice. Other local Mexican restaurants in town don't even compare!

We've been to El Sombero dozens of times. While I am stunned by some of the truly horrific experiences other Yelpers have had with the staff here, that hasn't been my experience. Last night my wife and I took our son to eat here after trick-or-treating. My wife ordered a combination platter comprised of a burrito, an enchilada, beans and rice. She asked for extra rice instead of beans and they got it right. She forgot, however, to tell the server that she wanted a cheese enchilada instead of beef. Since it was her mistake, she explained the situation to the server and we ordered a cheese enchilada separately. The server offered to remake my wife's food, but my wife pointed out for a second time that it was her own fault and we didn't mind paying extra to fix it. The server, however, insisted on taking back my wife's food and remaking the entire plate. It came back hot and fresh and FAST. We were both impressed. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly and I think she only smiled once, but she was very professional and my wife and I were impressed by how helpful she was with our problem. What's more, she stopped by our table on a regular basis through the evening and we had everything we needed. During our meal, the manager even came out and visited every table, making sure that all the guests were happy. The only reason I am giving this restaurant three stars is because of the food. The service was great, the place was clean and the food was hot, but it was remarkably bland. From the beginning to the end of the meal, there were no distinct flavors that stood out. Even the taste of the guacamole and salsa--which are unique flavors that you'd expect to stand out from the rest of the meal--just blended right in. Except the fried ice cream. That's just incredible. I know we'll be back because my son is addicted to the cheese dip and the food is fast and dirt cheap. You'd probably spend more going through the drive-through at Taco Bell than you will having a meal here, so it doesn't have to be gourmet.

Awful, awful food. Everything I've had here has been salty and/or incredibly greasy. I ordered the veggie fajitas once and they came with a bacon-wrapped pepper. They also consisted mainly of onions with very few other vegetables. On the plus side, their salsa and chips are pretty darn good. In general, though, I try to avoid this place.

Wife and I eat here several times a month. Food us consistent and usually great. Occasionally just good. Servers are attentive, friendly and take good care of us. One or two we prefer not to have serving us .. but the rest are good. Wife's favorite is the El Sombrero salad w grilled steak, chicken and shrimp. Great taste and value. My favorites are pork/carnitas tacos, tamales, or the chicken enchiladas mole.

In from out of town at a convention, and wanted to get some Mexican food close to my hotel. I found El Sombrero on Yelp and decided to give it a try... Super fast takeout service even during Friday night at dinner time. I got the Fajitas Texanos Which was enough for two people. Very good meal at a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend this spot as very authentic Mexican, at a very good price.

When I first moved to Macon I used to go to this restaurant all the time because it was great food at good prices and everything came out of the kitchen lightening fast, but now... Well saying things have gone downhill would be an understatement. After two recent visits I'm not going back anymore. First of all the quality of the food has taken a significant downturn and ironically it takes a lot longer to get it. The biggest problem however is the service. I have gotten the same waiter a few times now who is downright rude and honestly a little creepy. We've caught him staring at us while we eat, but when you ask him for something he ignores you. The worse incident however was when we went with my ten year old nephew. He tried to ask a question about a taco special and the guy basically told him he was stupid for not knowing what a taco was and that he should just shut up. My mother was horrified, my nephew was crushed and the question about the taco's ingredients was asked in a polite way, so the experience was nothing short of surreal. Honestly I think the only reason we didn't storm out was because we were all in shock. This is probably the meanest thing I've written in a review, but the reality is you should not have mentally unstable people waiting tables at a restaurant. I'm sorry, but I would honestly say stay away even if you have been in the past an used to like it. Or at the very least get take out, so you can minimize contact with the staff.

Definitely way better Mexican in the area to eat then at this place. I've been here twice and both times I had pretty crappy service and the food was pretty tasteless. No, not tasteless, just bad. The enchilada sauce was bland and the taco was....a taco. Best part of the meal was the rice and beans. The wait staff might be OK, but the lady I had couldn't understand that I wanted a side of rice, not that I was trying to substitute the rice for beans. We also placed a to-go order for a friend and they charged us a $.50 fee. For what, the to-go box? We could have put it in the box they had already given us for our leftovers. I mean, I sort of understand the fee, but we just came in and ordered two meals, now we're paying more money for another meal and you charge us a fee just to take it out of the restaurant? In hindsight, I guess we could have said "instead of desert just bring us two burrittos...oh, and a to-go box." I wonder if we would have had to pay the fee. With the server we had, my gut tells me no.

I live around the corner, so this is my go-to Mexican place. Solid food. The staff may be a bit disinterested, but in my case they've always been competent and fairly prompt, which is all I really ask. The beer selection is good, and prices for larger beers are pretty great. The last few times I've been, I've had Mole dishes, and they were outstanding. They do shrimp well, and get the smokey, hard hitting flavour of good Mole right, which can be tough. Overall? It's a solid Mexican place. No surprises, no big successes, but reliable and certainly worth the money.

It's getting chilly out and I had a hankering for Mexican....and El Sombrero is right down the street. I placed my burrito order to go, they told me ten minutes and so my perpetual path towards gluttony began. First of all, they gave me a ginormous bag of chips, and they were still warm! Yay! i love that. So, my burrito was full of yummy meat, covered in queso, and came with a side of rice. Not exactly Mexico City mexican, but tasty nevertheless. The salsa that came with the chips was fresh and had a kick, the pico was chunky...so my only disappointment was the watery guacamole. I would still go back...everything was cheap, fresh and hot, but the guac is a a definite no!

There are about 3 El Sombrero's in Macon. The salsa from this one is completely different than the other two and is no where near as good as the others!!!! Please someone here get it right! I think El Sombrero has the best salsa you will ever have, try the Macon Mall location and I think you'll agree. Other than that, great stop, food is good but restaurant is lacking in appeal.

The food here is alright, but it is not good enough to support the rude waitstaff. My husband and I stopped at El Sombrero on our way to Florida. We both ordered chilaquiles and noted when we received our food that it was odd that the chicken was served grilled on the side, rather than mixed in with the rest of the chilaquiles. When we received our check I notice we were charged $11.75 each for our meal rather than the $8.95 on the menu. When I asked the cashier she stated that this was because we got grilled chicken breasts instead of standard chilaquilas with "stewed" chicken. I explained to her that while we liked what we got, we never specified that we wanted grilled chicken... which I guess was supposed to be some kind of upgrade. Her response was "well, you ate it so now you have to pay for it." I figured, fair enough, but I asked her to show me where on the menu it stated that we could have a grilled chicken breast instead for an extra $3 each. Per the cashier, this option was not actually on the menu. So essentially, we were served something we never ordered, that wasn't on the menu, for which we were charged an additional 30% of the total price of our dinner, and we were treated like crap when we asked about it. I am not a "customer is always right" type of person, but I was very displeased with this whole scenario. We pass through Macon frequently and I will be sure never to stop at this place again. The poor service and treatment really put a damper on the rest of our drive.
