Greek Cuisine
Greek food is a fine melody of the finest pressed olive oil, fresh fermented bread, colorful vegetables, juicy meat, sea food all cooked in spices and fresh rosemary. The people from Greek were great scholars who aimed to excel in everything they do. The results are quite visible in their food as they are the inventors of olive oil which is beneficial to health. Greeks also made different type of wines from the best quality of grapes fermented in controlled environment.
Today, you can find hundreds of restaurants offering authentic Greek food or popularly termed as Mediterranean cuisine in New York city alone. People wait in line to taste the exotic Greek dishes like saganaki, taramasalata, souvlaki, loukoumades, spanakopita, moussaka, and many more. A smart mix of few ingredients can virtually take you on the pebble streets of beautiful city of Greece.
For those who don't have time to enjoy fine dining should try tasting the famous souvlaki with pita which is type of meat dish, also a trademark Greek fast food. For those who are vegetarian, or vegan can try different versions of Greek Salad. So, if you wish to enjoy a hearty yet healthy meal that tastes divine then try dining at the best Greek restaurant in your city. We love Greek food and love trying new places. We both ordered lamb gyros. Very.... unusual. The meat looked and tasted like pulled pork. In fact, even though its not a menu option, I'd be hard to convince it wasn't. Regardless, totally unlike any gyro meat I've had. Ever. And not in a good way. You know, shaved hunks of meat? Not here. Somewhere between pulled pork and chipped beef. Tzatziki sauce... tasted like Gatorade cucumber flavor. Very gross. Again, nothing at all resembles any if the other 800-900 other sauces I've had. The only thing in common is they're both white. Pita was tasty. If they intended to take creative license to have some new thing, cool. But advertise as such. But sadly I think they really tried to make a normal gyro. Fail.

Love places like this: family owned, couzy, relaxing atmosphere, good food - definitely is a place to go once in awhile. Yummy bread and a dip that comes with it. Shish kebabs were good but not the best. Plan to visit them again in the future to try more food.

The best Greek restaurant in Florida. The Braised Lamb Shank and the occasional special Roast Pork are to die for. A family run place with very friendly service. Excellent Greek wine list. Highly recommended.

Had another meal of lamb shank, excellent as always. Also a fine, fresh salad, looks and tastes good. They changed their beer, and it is also good. New furniture as well, I think the owner George is enjoying himself. He greets each guest at the table. Definitely keeping up his standards.

I would give five stars, but the service was mediocre - awful by the end of our night. We waited 15 minutes for the check, after asking continuously. They were not busy. The owner, however, was kind and attentive in the beginning (didn't see much of him by the end of our dinner -). Food was excellent and fresh. My children enjoyed sharing a meal (they split it for them). We will return, as I assume they were just having a "off" night with staffing.

This is the real deal! George is from Greece and the food is magnificent. From the eggplant dip to the lamp shank - prepare to be amazed by this gracious host!

Without a doubt, the best Greek food I've had in a restaurant!! We were greeted at the door, on Valentine's Day, by the owner George, with smiles and handshakes!! The wait staff was friendly and very willing to suggest or explain menu items. Definite family atmosphere, I even got a kiss on the cheek when we left!! The lamb shank was unbelievably flavorful and just fell off the bone. My husband had the lamb gyro, which was quite the plateful!! They had no problem adjusting the dishes to meet dietary concerns. We are in the process of house hunting in the Sarasota area and can't wait to become regulars here. Don't miss it. You'll definitely be missing out!!

The food is excellent but the service is really poor. This is a cozy little space with no kids menu. We did not know that. Took our kids 5, 7, 9 when there were only 4 other tables occupied. We were the largest party. We were promptly seated by the owner. The waitress went away and returned 10 mins later with water. Then later she returned with warm bread. Never said her name or what the specials were or if we would like something other than water. We ordered 2 apps and 4 entrees. I asked if the Gyros are large enough for our two young ones to share. The response was "well I don't know how much they eat". This is technically correct but not very polite. The waitress was the owners daughter and likely just past her teens so I guess it was nice enough that she was not surly. The food was fantastic. Lamb shank and Gyros were the best I have had in a long time. The broiled Octopus was really tender. The salads were plain but good. Our bill was about $70 which I think was very fair. Despite the lack of service I would come here again but without kids. By the way, had she asked our kids would have ordered drinks and my wife and I would have gotten a bottle of wine. The bill could have been a $100.

Found the Greek Taverna while on vacation in Sarasota - we really wanted a Mom & Pop place to eat - this was just the right spot. Hummus was delicious as was the side salad. I had the Lahano Dolmades with Cream Lemon Sauce (cabbage stuffed with beef & rice with lemon sauce), so yummy. Hubby had the moussaka and loved it as well. Dessert was the Galactobouriko: Sweet custard baked in filo dough topped with honey and citrus syrup. Wow was it amazing!

First of all the food was average. I ordered a Greek salad with lamb. I had asked for the dressing on the side because most places drown alas in dressing and I admit I am rather particular about that. First I heard an oh shot out of the kitchen they salad was presented to me with dressing on it. Trying not to be a pain I tried it the way it was served but all I could taste of the dressing was oil no flavor at all. I did promptly receive another one with the dressing on the side. I did not meet this friendly George all the reviews are talking about apparently he was to busy to be the friendly to us. He was listening to at top volume in the middle of the restaurant the review he relieved from some online blog. Just a little disappointed.

Delicious! As good as the Parthenon in Chicago! From the Hummus with Pita and the White Bean (vegan) and Avgolemono soups for starters to the beautiful traditional Greek side salad and main courses of Gyros (with yummy, crispy, non-greasy fries) and Spanakopita, everything was fresh and artfully prepared. We will put this on the top of our list for our next visit to Sarasota. Very reasonably priced. Good Greek wine, too.

The Greek Taverna was rated 5 stars because the food was amazing and very authentic. The service was beyond excellent and you will not be disappointed. We will be going back for sure. Great Prices - The menu prices were really good so you are receiving a great value! Not overpriced. George, the owner, was very fun to speak with and was very excited to share his greek menu. He helps take the orders and serve while his wife does all of the cooking in the back. This is a great authentic Greek restaurant. I ordered the soup of the day which was a white bean soup with tomato base. I also ordered a Gyro which was packed with flavor and ingredients. Everyone at my table loved their food and thought this restaurant was awesome. Sometimes the best restaurants are hidden in little strip malls which was the case here.

I have eaten at a bunch of Greek restaurants and this was definitely one of the best. I had a lamb gyro which was delicious, and the other seven people enjoyed their meals as well. The owner came out of the kitchen to ensure we were having a good time, and he was quite the character. A+ for service. We will be back here next time we are in Sarasota.

As much as I wanted to like this place. I couldn't. We found it on yelp. It has so many 5 stars that we thought for sure we found a great Greek restaurant. We were vacationing on Siesta Key and drove 20 minutes inland. But it was just OK. We ordered a three appetizers. The saganaki (fried cheese) was swimming in oil, and the thinnest slice possible, very small. The dolmathakia (rice stuffed grape leaves) tasted to me like the store bought can dolmathakia. And the fried bakalao skordalia (fried salted fish with garlic sauces) was actually tasty but a little heavy. After the appetizers, and the initial disappointment we decided to play it safe and order Gyros for our main course. The gyros were good. My husband ordered a lamb one and I the chicken. The meat inside was tastey and well prepared, the pita bread itself was soft and warmed, and the tsatsiki was plentiful, only a little heavy on the garlic. For those 3 appetizers, 2 gyro sandwhiches and a bottle of greek wine (Amethistos - which was excellent) our bill crested $120. The best part of the evening, was the music, light, authentic Greek classics. It is with a heavy heart that I say we wouldn't go back.

Excellent food, very friendly, attentive staff, great ambiance! Lemon chicken soup was extraordinary and the dolmathes in lemon sauce were the best I've ever had. Tiropita was delicious. We will definitely be regulars in the future!

Went for Easter dinner. Had the eggplant app - wonderful flavors. Had the roasted lamb with a nice bottle of Greek red blend wine. The chef (the owners wife) must have cooked the lamb forever, it was so tender and so flavorful. The service was perfect. All in all, it was a flawless meal - a rare event.

Simply the best Greek food available on the West Coast of Florida. George, the owner take immense pride in the authenticity and quality of the food at the Greek Taverna and it shows. Lot's of personal attention and amazing fresh authentic delicious food.......one of the must go to places in the area. The other Greek Choices in town do not even come close! You will love it!

What a wonderful Christmas Eve meal! Great, authentic Greek entrees and warm hospitality, A little hard to spot from the road, but worth the effort.

Having traveled to Greece three times in the last ten years (four for my wife) and living in Boston (fairly small Greek community) we have been in search of good authentic Greek cuisine for a long time and with little luck. We were shocked to find what we were looking for nested in a plaza among a nail salon, an adult store and other random shops. My wife (vegetarian) and I are well traveled and take our quest for finding authentic cuisine (not just Greek) seriously. Tonight a group of four of us dined at The Greek Taverna and I must say it exceeded our expectations by far. My wife had the stuffed tomatoes/peppers dish and bean soup and I had the owner's special dish of the night - the octopus pasta and lemon rice soup. We also shared a Country Greek salad (all the good stuff you will find in a Greek salad but without unnecessary lettuce). The food was extremely authentic, delicious and fresh. We all enjoyed how the chef (owner's wife) uses just the right level of spices which we do not often find in other Greek restaurants in US. The menu was very extensive with all of the items you will find in Greece (this is NOT just another pizza/gyro joint calling itself an authentic Greek cuisine). We dinned on a Thursday and it was a slow night. The owner (George) spent a lot of time sitting down with us and recommended a lot of delicious dishes, wine and desserts. His daughter was our waitress and was also very nice and attentive. If you are looking for a casual and authentic Greek family restaurant with delicious food you cannot go wrong with this place. If they would only move it out of a plaza to a bigger and more touristy/pedestrian place, this would be one of the top restaurants in Sarasota, but then it probably won't have the same warm feel.

It's really good! We were not disappointed. We started with the humus & pita appetizer. I had the lamb gyro and my wife had a side greek salad and the chicken gyro. Tzatziki is excellent and the fries were seasoned to perfection. Thank you Greek Taverna, we'll be back!
