Come to this place on a monday for margs. Or come any other day because the food is good and inexpensive. Great place to sit down at a table or the bar some food and drink. You wont be sad if you hop with the grasshopper. Food experienced: Tacos - Awesome (crispy and soft corn) Burritos - Nice and wet. Tamale - Homemade, fat, what you want. Margs - Sweet but they do get the job done. Brews - Solid selection of Mexico's finest (including Bohemia and Carta Blanka aka La Cart)

The margaritas were small and average. The salsa was bad to average. Get the cheese dip for your chips. The rice was very good! Good beers on tap is a plus. Entrees were weak and boring. Manager was nice. We've had much better Mexican food! I guess in Sarasota, there's not much to choose from.

Best Mexican around that I have found! Might not look like it from the outside but it has an awesome atmosphere. Their margs are delicious and fair priced! Actually all the prices are affordable! Great tasting food I go here as often as possible.

Where is the salsa? Oh that was salsa in those ketchup bottles! So I asked for some pico de gallo, to make my dish a little less boring, Was given a small thimble full of chopped tomato, onion, and cilantro. Boring!

A high middle. Service: Prompt and kind Atmosphere: Great decor and ambiance Tables: Large seating our party of 7 with ease Food: (here is where I get super descriptive) like most tex mex and Mexican places you start with chips. Here they give you a sauce rather than a salsa. I enjoyed it whilst others in my party did not. The guacamole was very fresh with whole ingredients. The Barbacoa was not as flavorful as I expected it to be. Although it was tender and meaty, it lacked savory flavor sand spice. I would compare it to my Jewish grandmother's pot roast. The shrimp was cooked well and seasoned to perfection. The fajita plate was rather bland. It was under salted and lacked the adobo season flavor I am accustomed to. The tortillas we a little on the dry side but perfect for tacos. I enjoyed my visit but will give the few other tex mex places a try before coming back to the Grasshopper. This restaurant is perfect for families with smaller children.

Very friendly service. All four of us really enjoyed the food. Great chips and sauce. Good sized portions. Definitely will come back next time we're in Sarasota!

I am giving 2 stars to this restaurant because the service was good, otherwise I would give half a star for the food. I don't recommend this place at all and I don't know why it says 4 stars in this app and so many good comments... Maybe because I'm Spanish and I know how Latin/Mexican food really should taste like. The place is nice and the service is good, but the food is not good at all. We knew we made a mistake as soon as we saw the chips and salsa and the queso because they were NOT good at all, but we still ordered to not be rude.

The great iceberg lettuce glut of 2014 will not be without its beneficiaries. The Grasshopper, for example, will be out there bidding pennies for boxes of these things. Huzzah! the owners will cry, chomping on their cigars, our profit margin just tripled! Friends tell me that El Chapulin caught a ride down I-75 from Adrian, Michigan before creating his Sarasotan home. Call me green with six legs, but since when was anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line any kind of wellspring of "Tex-Mex"? The key here is the number of MI plates on the roads around these parts. It seems the plague of Michiganders that descends upon us each winter will eat anything that reminds them of home, all the while shouting "Go Blue" or other chants rather rude about something called "Ohio." I presume that cacophony is the equivalent of rubbing wings. There is a word for being more than underwhelmed, but I don't know what it is. Actually, thinking about my meal, there are several descriptive phrases that spring to mind. One is their use of tasteless shredded cheese instead of Walmart's Fiesta blend. Another is the surfeit of peppers and onions; el cheapo ingredients Senor Hopper. Yet another might be the bulking out of dishes with those bargain lettuce heads. Yep. It's Fiesta Time. Somewhere.

I just love the grasshopper , It's been a staple of mine since I was a kid in Adrian, michigan my home town .I missed it so very much when I moved here in 1986 . I never ever thought it would be here in sarasota. I would never miss a chance to get my fix when I went to Michigan . Now I get to have it in my home town of choice sarasota . Family owned and fresh food I can't say enough great things . I will always pass the word about my home town MEXICAN restaurant ...#lovemygrasshopper #lovemesomechickenenchilidas #lovemesomecubebeefburittos

AWESOME simply put. First visit enjoyed happy hour margaritas and cheap bottled beer. Nachos cheese and beef were great and queso was super dope. Rice was cooked perfect and tasted great. Enchilada was my entree and loved how it stayed together until last bite. Others at table enjoyed chicken fajitas and chalupa. Everything was spectacular, comfortable environment and very CLEAN appearance.

I love this place! I recommend the beef chalupas! Get them with guacamole! Yum yum yum. A good replacement for the old el adobe that closed recently. Everyone is super friendly i have been here over 10 times since they opened and have never had bad service or bad food. Value priced...and fast. Good for takeout too. The portions are big even for the kids menu which features a good selection for my little guys. Check local flyers in your mail because sometimes they have coupons.

My wife brought home a chicken burrito for me. The sauce and burrito itself were nothing but BLAND. No flavor at all. I had to Tobasco it up to eat. She admitted her meal eaten there was the same as mine. (Beef fajitas) BLAND, BLAND, BLAND! Not going back, either of us.

Margaritas were great; but that's about it. Nothing original, nothing fresh. Prices were steep for below average food.

Terrible dining experience tonight! Ants on menu and crawling across table. Manager came over-we explained what had happened and he thanked us for our patience! What was that supposed to mean? We will NEVER return!

When I'm on vacation, I like to eat at places that are not chains. This place was interesting to say the least. Their chips tasted like straight up wheat, not corn chips. I got the fajitas, the meat was really dry. The veggies were good. My boyfriend got the fish tacos and said they were good. His beans and rice were dry, kinda gross. But the dessert was good, we got the fried dough with cinnamon on them with honey. They were the closet thing to sopapillas from New Mexico.

The tacos were average and could definately benefit from the addition of hot sauce. Margaritas are a deal at only $3.75 each however they barely contained any alcohol. The biggest problem with the frozen margarita was that it was not completely blended. There were large chunks of ice, making it difficult to drink. My friend ordered a margaritas on the rocks and it was a bit too much lime. We also ordered nachos to share. Yes, you get a generous portion, but they were oddly lacking cheese. Half the nachos had no cheese at all :( I would agree that service is definately one of their strong suits and prices are el cheapo.

Really great addition to Sarasota, from a supremely picky palate! Our appetizer of green queso, however, was not a great start... I love my queso and chips and was a bit disappointed in the somewhat watery and unspicy cheese soup... But once I mixed a bunch of the delicious hot salsa in... It was a winner! So, the tools were there... Just needed our own touch. If I were staff, I'd mention it as an option for customers looking to add a kick to their queso. Totally redeemed themselves by the fact that I could get a half order of fajitas (which was super filling and delicious). my husband got the shrimp tacos and they were amazing, too. Both tasted super fresh!! Especially with a drizzle of our table concocted cheese/salsa ;-) Waitress was sweet... A little slow with the beers (spicy food = more beer and faster beer). The only bad part of the experience, TERRIBLE country music. A Mariachi Band would have been better. However, the food was fresh, yummy and totally affordable! I'll definitely be back!

Amazing, authentic Mexican food in an unlikely location on S Tamiami trl. Everything has a distinctly homemade taste which is really rare for Mexican places we've been. Run, don't walk and be sure you have a good appetite when you go!

This place was great! The rice was the best Spanish rice I've ever had. The service was excellent and the margaritas even better. I had the bean tostada & a cheese enchilada with the green sauce which was delicious. My boyfriend had tacos that he said were very good. The owner came & introduced himself and brought us a few samples. The queso & guacamole were my favorites. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for Mexican food in Sarasota. We will definitely go back every time we are in town.

Hubby and I ate at The Grasshopper for the first time yesterday, and will definitely be back! He ordered the chile relleno with beef, and a Margarita, I got a chicken enchilada, and a pork tamale. Both of mine were excellent, the only comment I have is that the green sauce that I ordered on my enchilada was actually the green cheese dip I think... don't know if it was a mistake, or if that's what you get when you order the green sauce. Either way, it was pretty good, but I'll order it with the Ranchero sauce next time, and save a few calories. My husband raved about his chile relleno, said the beef was so tender. Owner Dino explained that it was cooked for hours in the gravy, then brought us a sample bowl of the pork, which is cooked the same way, not like your standard carnitas. I was too full to try it, but my hubby said it was awesome, ate the whole bowl. Our bill for the whole thing, tip and tax included was less than $30. Definitely a bargain! Long story short, we will definitely be back in the near future. Mexican food is my all time favorite, and we love supporting a local business!

Best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. In most Mex restaurants the meat dish is the main event and the rice and beans are just "there." At The Grasshopper, not only is the entree delicious, the rice and beans are also INCREDIBLY flavorful. Have had tacos, flautas, chimichangas and burritos - all fantastic. Servers are friendly and efficient; decor is colorful and fun; owner often walks around to say hello and check up on the customers. This is a great casual dining experience. I would highly, highly recommend it!

Dino (the owner) and his staff won us over. The Grasshopper is on our list of be-back-often restaurants. We were greeted at the door and seated immediately. Our margaritas were fantastic. Complimentary chips and salsa were served and then Dino came over and introduced himself. Really made you feel comfortable and cared for! Our meals came quickly and were perfect. We love mexican and this place was a great find. I'd come back just for the guac. Great food and even greater service... what more can you ask for.

Yea!!! Real Tex-Mex right here in Sarasota! We are newly transplanted Texans with one mission in mind: Find the Tex-Mex. Well, yeehaw and hallelujah! The search is over! The Grasshopper exceeded our expectations---excellent quacamole, delish "green" chile con queso, a variety of salsas from mild to blazin', yummy margaritas, and a to-die-for wet burrito! Yes, "wet"! The owner, Dino (?), and his staff went out of their way to welcome us and made us feel like old friends. I highly recommend The Grasshopper. See you there!

3 adults & 2 kids ordered... Green Cheese Dip. (Addictive = 3 bowls disappeared) Deluxe Beef Tacos. Beef Enchiladas topped with Green Cheese Sauce. Hand-made Tamales topped with Meat Sauce. Steak Fajitas. (1/2 order for the 10-yr old) Hot Dog & Fries. (for the 5-yr old) Service was great. Examples: 1) We didn't even notice that she had left replacements for the drinks we were about to finish. 2) We didn't have to ask for extra napkins. 3) She had the kids coloring place-mats ready in an instant. FINALLY!! GOOD MEXICAN FOOD ARRIVES IN BRADENTON / SARASOTA!!

Susan the bartender will be the one keeping you coming back. She is so friendly and makes you feel like you are apart of the family. The Mexican rice is the best, I don't like rice, but enjoy it here, also the cheese dip is a must have.

Fantastic meal. The owner came over to table to explain how these Tex-Mex recipes were passed down from his grandmother...very cool. The fajitas are very fresh and the corn tortillas were soft and delicious.

Some pros: -) very clean restaurant, that's always a good introduction for a new customer. -) average beer selection. If you're looking for south-of-the-border style beers, they have the most popular ones. -) loved the rice, more because it was a little different than just about everywhere else. Some things maybe they could do better: -) nasty refried beans seem to be endemic in Mexican restaurants. The rice was good, find a better frijoles recipe, please. -) I didn't see carne asada on the menu. I could have missed it (my apologies if I did). If not, wth? Mixed: Service was good. No real complaints there. I wanted to hate the salsa (I wasn't ready for the thin/soupy texture) but it turned out both hot and mild were good. My only complaint--if you want to call it that--is purely personal. I'm a big fan of chunks of fresh things in salsa . . . Just sayin' think about it. Overall, it's a decent MexAmerican place and I'll be back. The kids loved their hot dogs; I think I can convince them to go back as well.

We came back with friends from Tampa who loved every thing. One guest couldnt get over the great quality of the meat in her fajitas. Green cheese sauce so good we got a second large bowl to share. I also found out that our neighbor in SRQ also loves this place and another friend who I recommended this place to, went with one of her friends for lunch and they both loved everything they had. So try this place!!

Great new spot. Clean, bright and delicious Mexican fare. Priced very well. Cheerful friendly service, excellent drinks and just an overall good spot for a meal, a snack or to sit and visit. The service is prompt, but they never rush you. Obviously I like this place and it has become our family favorite for Mexican food. It's not the fancy high end restaurant that typically gets five stars for being expensive. I give it five for really good food and service that makes you want to come back soon!

Very disappointed. Not very authentic. Cheese dip tasted like from a can. Food had little flavor or spice. Margaritas were ok but must be completely intoxicated to enjoy the food. Service was good but won't be back.

Friends recommended The Grasshopper to us. Very nice service, fajitas had good chicken, green peppers and onion. Simple. Yummy combo plate. Decent margs. Good Guac. We are guacamole and margarita snobs, they were very good. Meager ambiance and family friendly. Price was right! We will definitely return.

I am glad I finally took the time and the advice from a good friend, and drove south on the Trail to The Grasshopper. First of all, I am from Texas, and Tex-Mex food is golden to me. The Grasshopper did not disappoint. The walls are pained bright colors and the overall effect was a happy one. But the food, oh the food! We tried the guacamole, which was perfect. I have entered guacamole contests in Texas and this came very close to my secret recipe. Their cheese sauce was so gone soon after it appeared. The owner Dino, told us he makes his chips so they have no preservatives and you can taste the difference. He also told us he followed family recipes for most of the dishes he serves. He also has a place up north and that location is the place my friend knew well. I think my friend eats there several times a week now that they are here in Sarasota. We wanted to try everything, so we ordered the combination plate, and that comes with two different enchiladas, a taco of your choice (soft, hard, fillings) and a chalupa. Since Dino makes everything from scratch, you have many choices of sauces, fillings, etc. I suggest the cubed beef and meat sauce enchiladas and the chicken enchiladas. But we loved everything! The freshness of preparation is evident and you can tell that everything is made with love and attention. It IS Tex-Mex, so when I saw older folks around me enjoying their meals, I knew I could bring anyone here to dine and they would love it. MAKE THE TRIP! I work and live near downtown, so it is a bit far south for me, but no matter, The Grasshopper is now on my favorites list. My dining companion tried so hard to have something to take home, but alas, her plates were empty and I had very little to take home as well. The leftovers nuked well, which is a testament to Dino's deft hand at tortillas and sauces. I will be back soon and I am bringing friends!

This place sucks. Went there tonight I ordered a chimichanga and the bf got the burrito plate...pfft. Idk what is going on here in Florida. I have lived in a few different states including California, Texas and Illinois. The pizza here in Florida even if it says Chicago Pizza SUCK...and the Mexican food SUCKS what a disgrace. The freakin burrito was simply a tortilla with 3 small pieces of meat and the chimichanga..not much different..except it was deep fried...which is what it was suppose to be with a little cheese. Honest to God it tasted like they took the meat from a denty moore beef stew and stuck it in a tortilla WTF lol you people don't know what good food is....Im officially cooking at home from now on with an occasional trip to the Ale House which seems to be the best place to eat here in SRQ ....

"I'm originally from Arizona and am very picky about my Mexican food. This was awesome! Great atmosphere and friendly employees. If you let them know its your first time here, they give you free samples!!! Free! The drinks are cheap and delicious. I ordered the chicken chimichanga and it was mouthwatering! Try the guacamole, it was fresh and flavorful!

One of the worst Mexican restaurants that I've ever eaten at. I stopped in since they have such good reviews on Yelp. First step in the place, you know you're in trouble. the place has more of a sports bar feel than Mexican restaurant. They served us salsa that had absolutely no flavor. I'm sure there was not one sprig of cilantro in the entire restaurant. The "margarita's" tasted like super concentrated whiskey sour mix. Never again!

Restaurant is cheery and clean. Wait staff is trying hard. So is management. Food is fresh. My issue is with the descriptions/definitions of dishes. I ordered a "mole chalupa" but received a guacamole tostada. "mole" is not short for guacamole, no matter how the manager wants to spin this. Getting definitions wrong on basic Mexican dishes is not an option. I will give credit for fresh guacamole, not confused with weird additions that some restaurants add (garlic, cream cheese, mangoes). Kudos to our server, Madison.

Friends had told us about the place. Our experience (twice) not great. Service was poor & food mediocre at best. Would not recommend w/ El Adobe just up the road a few miles

  • Erin F.

Staff is super friendly. Guacamole is great. And their "green sauce" is very tasty and not too spicy. Margaritas are a little sweet, but very good. And others at the table (not typically lovers of rice), commented on how AWESOME the rice is! If you want Mexican, give the Grasshopper a try!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
