The restaurant was packed so we ate at the bar. We got waited on immediately and ordered our drinks. Next we had tomato basil soup (yummy), cheeseburger (that was way too big but good) and I had the ahi tuna. All good choices. They have a great outside area with tall fire lanterns. Makes for a great place to sit and enjoy the evening. Nice atmosphere.

Disappointed. Food was nothing special, but at least the service was really slow. It's pretty expensive for what you get. And, we were here for a birthday and they didn't offer the birthday boy anything. Overall, not a fan.

We let the executive sushi chef do his own thing after describing what we liked. The sushi came out amazing, we couldn't have asked for better.

I've had some bad service here before, and some mediocre service. The wait time for food is unbelievably slow, notoriously. However, Casey was our waitress a couple days ago for the early afternoon crowd and I cannot praise her enough. We had hard orders, food allergies, specific needs, and she nailed all of them! She was polite, kind, professional and most of all, thorough. Casey should be rewarded for her outstanding service. Way to go Casey. I wish all the waitstaff at Kona Grill were as competent as you.

I have eaten here four times since this restaurant has opened at the University town Center. Overall I think this place has some great dishes with the exception of their sushi. My husband loves the tuna steak sandwich - rare. Although the bun can be a little dry sometimes, the quality of the fish is great. I on the other hand love the asparagus salad with Macademia encrusted chicken. We have both tried the sushi, and we are avid love sushi lovers. Both my husband and I agree the flavors are lacking in there really are much better options as far sushi goes. This place is great if you're looking for a nice place to eat at the mall or just even a fun place to grab drinks or eat outside. Worth a try if you never been there, however I wouldn't make your first stop be for sushi.

No idea! We sat for 10 minutes and never even got to order drinks. Not that crazy busy either. Just bad service. Seemed like a okay menu, but nothing jumped out at us. The poor inattentive service decided it though. Abysmal service.

2 words...Happy Hour! It's only offered in the bar and lounge area. For a relatively pricey restaurant, I must say that the happy hour will leave you stuffed and tipsy without totally emptying your wallet. The lettuce wraps alone are enough for a meal, and there are plenty of sushi options on special as well. I had the spicy tuna and Bama rolls, and each were half off. The potstickers are amazing and packed full of flavor! The frozen margaritas are so velvety in texture and will knock you on your rear for only $4.75! The servers are very attentive and will make sure you have everything you want before happy hour ends at 7.

This restaurant has a great ambiance but that is where the positives end. My partner and I visited this place while we were there last weekend and we're extremely disappointed. The service was very poor. We ended up waiting nearly 30 minutes to get our check. I was very excited to eat here but was soon let down very quickly. I asked several questions about if foods could be manipulated as to not include dairy, as I am allergic and was excited to find out they have a special menu. However, after receiving the menu, I found out that they didn't very little to accommodate allergies. I ended up ordering grilled chicken. Come to find out it was plain grilled chicken with plain white rice with a slop of overcooked kale. The best part was that even though I repeatedly said I was allergic to dairy, the kale was drenched in butter. After receiving the bill we found out this poorly displayed and cooked meal would cost me nearly $20. This is the most disturbing and unfortunate place I have ever eaten. I would not recommend.

This place is delicious! I've been about a dozen times, usually for happy hour after work on Tuesdays, and I haven't tasted anything that I didn't love. They have some rolls and appetizers on their happy hour as well as margaritas and some other specialty drinks, which is great! We love sitting at the high tops in the bar area. The problem here is the service. I've worked in the restaurant industry since the day I turned 16, and I know as well as anyone that sometimes servers can get double or triple sat, the kitchen can slow them down, or they can get weeded for a million other reasons beyond their control. But it seems that at this location, no matter how few customers are in the restaurant, the service is always incredibly slow and inattentive. We always seem to be waiting on our checks for 20 minutes after we're finished eating. I'll be back for sure. I'd highly recommend the food at Kona, but make sure you have plenty of time to spend there!

2nd time here, this time for dinner. Got the Rock shrimp app. , along with the coconut shrimp roll and rainbow roll. The rock shrimp had too much mayo sauce. The rainbow roll was missing something and was bland. The coconut shrimp roll was amazing though. Wish I would've gotten 2 of those instead. The snickers ice cream pie was delicious! So was the Kentucky mule!

Ok so we walk in and The hostess didn't even say hello to us she just walked to our table and left. On our way out she didn't even say goodbye or have a nice day. Call me crazy but when you hire a hostess shouldn't they be friendly and have people skills???? Seriously so rude.. We came for lunch and enjoyed it. I had cup of chili soup and a salad for a lunch special that was 10.50. The food was delicious. We also had a bama roll which was pretty good, it was on the spicier side of the menu but I thought it could have had a little more of a kick, it wasn't anything spectacular. I suppose I would come again.

Acoustics AWFUL! Cannot hear person across the table. Food good but lots of restaurants have good food that you can converse with person you are eating with. Mentioned problem to manager. Told they are aware of it but apparently not willing to do something about it. Their loss.

Just tried Kona Grill at the brand spakin' new University Town Center Mall today. We were some of the first customers seated on their second day opening, so you can imagine the experience. There were servers everywhere, almost as many servers as customers. All of the managers were there checking on tables. And, about eight hosts at the front kiosk. I did not even peek into the open concept kitchen area to see how many people there were bumping into each other. At our booth was an outlet and two USB ports at our table for charging devices! Now, that is awesome. This all contributes to the atmosphere, as well as the beautiful glowing saltwater fish take that was directly behind my head and the full liquor bar staring back at me. Overall, in a mall without a food court, Kona Grill is a great option. While another sushi restaurant is going to be opening up across the corridor with more casual pricing, Kona holds as the only current sushi option in the mall. The menu is massive, and a steak can run you about $30. However, I found the sushi prices to be quite reasonable for the atmosphere, size of the rolls, and the care involved in plating. Same pricing as a hole-in-the-wall local sushi joint. The appetizers are a little pricey, running around $10 each. I splurged a little and ordered an appetizer (that I do not wish to discuss), Volcano Roll, Coconut Shrimp Roll, and Cucumber Salad--- my lunch was $48.00 with tip. Ouch! My co-worker had just one roll and gyoza, she was fine. Don't come to Kona expecting some sort of authenticity, it is New American/Fusion place. But, if you don't like something, just let your server know and they will try to help make it taste better. I did that with my cucumber salad that tasted like it had been doused in glucose. I think I will come back and try a $15 Kona Burger and a $15 plate of Pad Thai. I'm actually ready for that meal right now, thanks.

I consider myself a sushi connoisseur so it's safe to say the sushi is sub par. The ahi wontons are good though. I like their late night happy hour and usually stick to the margaritas or cosmos (I always ask for light cranberry or else it's too much). The first week they opened I went in with a friend for martinis and the female bartender was rude and slow. Next time there was a male bartender. I can't remember his name. But he was awesome and made sure our drinks and food came out in a timely fashion.

I couldn't decide between 1 and 2 stars. I went with one because the service and food were equally horrible. I could tell they were trying, but the place was a mess in terms of dirty dishes and glasses all over the bar, unfriendly and disheveled bartenders, and servers who didn't know a thing about the menu items. We also had to send the spinach dip back because it was a sloppy, drippy mess..not to mention cold. All around, it was a bummer.

I was in a party of 10 at 5 pm tonight, and both the service and food were great! We had drinks, appetizers, and dinner. Every person enjoyed their food, and our waitress was attentive. I had the Gouda, pretzel, apple appetizer and there was enough for us all to sample. My dinner choice was almond crusted pork loin which was juicy and delicious. The mashed potatoes and baby bok Choy was very tasty, and not too much salt. Our table didn't get dessert, but we saw three different types being served and they looked awesome.

We love this place! Always get a couple sushi rolls and the macadamia nut chicken, and the butter cake for dessert! Anytime we are near a kona grill, we def don't pass on it. I've had better sushi here than some sushi restaurants.

Kona Grill is a very welcome addition to the UTC Mall and the University Area in general. The restaurant is opposite the side with Cheesecake Factory, Seasons, Capital Grill, etc. What that being said you can typically find parking! It's a little bit of a secret about that entrance (let's keep that between us so it doesn't start getting jammed up). Bottom line here is it's much easier than most of the restaurants to get to....that's a good thing. The food is consistently pretty good, although we have had a couple of mix ups however they always made things right so you can't complain too much. All the food is good and it's actually a unique blend of different items and tastes. For instance, you can get fantastic sushi, smoke Gouda fondue with pretzel bites and some kids meals that are served bento box style (but with quality kid friendly food). The outside patio is nice with the fire pits throughout if it's not too humid. Overall I give 4 stars, but generally speaking it's excellent and consistent. TIP: Wednesday all day the offer 1/2 price bottles of wine!!

    (4)
  • Carl W.

Wednesday half off all bottles of wine. Our favorite a silver oak cab Alexander valley $50. Happy hour menu pretty good. Staff is friendly. Got to try the avacodo egg roll, Picasso roll and butter cake for desert, just to name a few. Not just a sushi joint plenty of other entrees that are really yummy. Pad Thai noodles, chili glazed salmon etc. Enjoy

Screw this place. I'v never eaten at a Kona so I decided to try it for lunch since I'm a true sushi lover. Im a mall employee so I gave them a call to place a pickup, hostess was very nice and I asked her if they offered mall employee discounts. She said yes but wasn't sure whether it was %20 or %25, either way was fine for me so I ordered a roll and a miso soup. When I arrived she doesn't tell me the total and meekly hands me a bill for $18.00! WTF!? Soup wasn't even half of a tiny cup, roll was mediocre at best. On top of that, she tells me there is no employee discount at all! Gee thanks Kona, the only reason I'm not giving you 1 star is cuz I didn't get food poisoning. If you want truly good sushi for the same price or less go to Pacific Rim on Hillview.

Nice looking place. Service was good but entres took a long time to arrive. I had Pad Thai which was far from authentic. Wife had a burger that was just OK. We won't be back.

Just back from lunch at Kona Grill. It seems they are getting their act together here. Based on previous reviews, we were expecting a wait for food from the kitchen, but not the case. The food was served promptly, and it was quite good...pulled pork sliders and an Oriental salad with chicken. Service was friendly and very efficient...ice tea refills were fast and furious! We will definitely return, especially since the line waiting for a table at 11:30 AM for Cheesecake Factory was snaking out the door to the parking lot.

It's hard to give even 1 star based on our first & probably last visit. Our wait @ the bar set the tone. Unprofessional & unfriendly bartenders that appeared out of place. Piles of dirty glasses everywhere you looked. No better when seated with unknowedgeable, unkept waitress, followed by unedible spinach dip app, and truly unremarkable dinners. Quite honestly, this place seems totally out of place at UTC & it's fine eating places. The quality of food & service is more associated with a fast food place and not what's expected when you see the attractive outside area. Don't let appearances fool you, this place is terrible in most every regard.

Kona has great atmosphere but the food itself leaves much to be desired. The drinks are ok but in general very weak. The sushi needs a SERIOUS upgrade. The only roll I've truly enjoyed after 3 trips there is the voodoo roll. Everything very middle of the road at best and lackluster. Though right now is sadly one of the best dining options (outside capital grill) we have at the new UTC.

Had dinner last night. Pretty let down. Food: My sushi looks like it was rolled by a 5th grader. It was loosely wrapped and falling apart on the plate, and was severely underfilled. Lobster Mac and Cheese was good, but a fairly small portion, especially compared to the Pad Thai. Service: Took forever for our food to arrive. The waitress was attentive and friendly though. Overall: Nice looking place, but I won't be going back, as other local places have much better sushi and I don't have to wait forever for it.

Sushi was great. Because they are new I think the servers are still getting the hang of things, service was slow. Sliders were cold and tasteless so I sent them back and they comp'd our whole bill (which was nice and unexpected). I'll try again in a few months.

Not ready for prime time! Disappointing to not honor a reservation and make you wait 15 minutes when your table is vacant. Asst. Manager blamed the customers for the wait - not leaving fast enough? Food was so, so - my pad thai had more egg in it than a Denny's Grand Slam and CSI would have had trouble finding the chicken in it. Asst. Mgr. was outright rude (hair in a bun - older woman) the young people working there were pleasant and hard working, Restaurant is too noisy - horrible acoustics! Very cold night and they had the open air bar exposed so the two women in our party had to eat with their coats on - plus we got to smell the smoke from people outside smoking (from the mall). Manager wandered around without a clue all the time we were there and never interacted with diners. Bottom line, if I make a reservation at Capital Grill - they always honor it, same for Ruths Chris and other "quality" restaurants. Don't lie to people because you are not competent or don't have YOUR act together yet.

This happy hour sure made me happy. The drink specials were great. Flatbreads paired with Sake Bombers just go wonderfully. The chicken caprese sandwich took me back to my roots in Italy with every bite. Tomatoes fresh off the vine. Mozzarella from the finest cows of Wisconsin. The grilled chicken just tasted free range! The waitress did a great job splitting the checks for a big group, talk about a happy ending

I met a friend here tonight for happy hour - upon entering the restaurant had a nice appeal, the bar area very open and plenty of high tops - there was out door seating with the heat lamps on (it was chilly tonight). I had looked at the menu on line but still was not sure what I wanted -I was disappointed there was no sake on the HH, we both got a sangria sake - which really tasted a wine spritzer with very little alcohol for $6.5 - we split an avocado egg roll - which was OK, the waitress said it was avocado sundried tomatoes and something else (I forget) in a wonton skin - well it basically was deep fried avocado very greasy and on their nutrition menu close to 1,500 calories YUCK - I ordered a spicy tuna roll which for the HH price was only $3.25 but someone posted their sushi was a step above Publix, this roll was the same as Publix. I was watching other food come out and nothing looked great to me. The service was fine, not overly friendly but the food came out fast and our waitress and, I think a manager, followed up with us. Our bill topped off at $15 each with tip - honestly for what we ate not a great deal. Daruma's sushi Happy Hour beats this by far, but is not in UTC with upscale ambiance, so if you want to spend $$$ for that then it's worth it. I will add they were busy, which was nice to see. Mix crowd of younger people older and two obnoxious guys who approached our table. Would I go back, probably not unless someone was treating.

Starting with a waitress who barely spoke English and I literally could not understand her despite asking to have everything repeated 3 and 4 times I should have known we were off to a bad start. She says 3 fish (2 of which I couldn't understand AT all) and says red snapper - great I'll take that - NOPE. She comes back and says we now only have Ono. OK we 'll pass. Order sushi - it's ok, little substance really. One step above Publix. We order 2 dinners and 1 kids meal. Kids meal comes out and the mac and cheese my kid won't eat. I taste it and it's got gouda and cheddar. Not smart for kids meal. Next my pork sliders come out. They are extremely hot and spicy but never said so on menu. The second meal doesn't show up until 10 minutes later! UNACCEPTABLE. I was done before her's came out! Next the waitress disappears for 15+ minutes. Our drinks were dry for over 15 minutes. Finally I ask random server and he brings us at least water. Another 10 minutes and non-english speaker shows up with bill. YUP - it's wrong, another 5 minutes to correct. Fed up we pay and leave. Overall disappointed. Lovely setting but wierd boring menu and horrible service. This place will not last, check back 1 year from now and they'll be gone. It's already showing aas they have empty tables and cheesecake Factory is on 2 hours wait and Capital Grill is sold out.
